Link : https://www.eweek.com/enterprise-apps/datadog-vs-prometheus/ Datadog and Prometheus both offer application performance monitoring (APM) platforms. Datadog is better established, and is graded as a Leader in the latest Gartner APM Magic Quadrant (MQ). Prometheus is open source and doesn’t meet the criteria for MQ entry demanded by the analyst firm – but it clearly has a number of strengths. So there are some similarities in terms of features and functionalities, as well as quite a few difference between Datadog and Prometheus. How do users go about determining which one is best for their specific environment? Here’s a look at both Datadog and Prometheus, how they compare, and their ideal use cases. Also see: Best Data Analytics Tools Datadog vs. Prometheus: Key Feature Comparison Datadog is focused on cloud monitoring and security. It offers the ability to see inside any stack or application at any scale and anywhere. Infrastructure monitoring, APM, log management, device monitoring, cloud workload monitoring, server monitoring, and database monitoring fall within its feature set. Datadog is particularly astute at dealing with the performance and visibility of multiple clouds operating on the network and in managing cloud services. The platform helps IT to drill down into performance data. It generates alerts about potential problems and helps IT to discover any underlying issues. It can assemble data from logs and other metrics to provide context that is helpful in minimizing incident response time. Datadog’s user interface centralizes performance monitoring, alert management, and data analysis in one place. Recent additions to its platforms include network monitoring, security analysis, AIOps, business analytics, a mobile app, and an incident management interface. Prometheus is free and is used for primarily for event and application monitoring. It records metrics in real time a database built using a HTTP. It also includes flexible queries and alerting. It allows slicing and dicing of collected time series data to generate ad-hoc graphs, tables, and alerts. It offers multiple ways of visualizing information. The software is part of the open-source Apache universe and supported by its own community. Prometheus outdoes Datadog in terms of its ability to implement highly dimensional data models. Time series are identified by a metric name and a set of key-value pairs. And Prometheus has multiple modes for visualizing data: a built-in expression browser, Grafana integration, and a console template language. Prometheus also stores time series in memory and on local disk in an efficient custom format. Scaling is achieved by functional sharding and federation. Alerts are defined based on Prometheus’s flexible PromQL and maintain dimensional information. An alert manager handles notifications and silencing. Overall, both Datadog and Prometheus can perform general APM functions. Datadog is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)-based application. It has much broader applicability both in terms of APM capabilities as well as monitoring other areas such as security, networking, and infrastructure, as well as log management. Prometheus’ strength lies mainly in event monitoring and metrics monitoring. But Prometheus offers something that Datadog does not – real-time monitoring. In terms of raw features, though, Datadog comes out ahead.Datadog vs. Prometheus: Comparing Implementation and Ease of Use Datadog installation is straightforward via the deployment of agents, though some command line scripting is required. It is relatively easy to customize dashboards and interfaces to the way you want them. The main interface offers extensive functionality. It’s great for experienced users, but it might be tough for new users who may be overwhelmed by the number of options. Prometheus is said to be easy to use. But that likely only applies to people who live and breathe in the open source world. For those familiar with Apache, installation is considered simple. Each server remains independent for reliability and relies only on local storage. Written in Go, all binaries are statically linked and easy to deploy. Client libraries also allow relatively easy instrumentation of services. Overall, Datadog gets the nod on implementation and ease of use. Without skilled open-source administrators as hand, the Prometheus interface can be difficult to master as well as being a little basic. And some find it difficult to set up and scale. Datadog vs. Prometheus: Support and Integration Comparison Datadog can work with a wide array of data formats and sources, but it is not a platform that is set up deal with a large number of information sources. Data formats like.xml, .csv, and .json are not supported, for example. That said, it can integrate well with other security and IT management tools. Datadog supports community APIs and extensions to integrate it into existing IT infrastructure. It is available for all major operating systems. Prometheus supports over ten languages. Community resources are available for learning the application, training of users, and troubleshooting issues. Blogs, chatrooms, Slack channels, and mailing lists are available as part of support. On the integration front, existing exporters allow bridging of third-party data into Prometheus. Examples include system statistics, as well as Docker, HAProxy, StatsD, and JMX metrics. Overall, Datadog wins on its integration options and community. Prometheus performs well in this regard, too. Also see: Top Data Visualization Tools Datadog vs. Prometheus: Security Comparison In years past, you could provide application performance management tools and software without having to worry a great deal about security. Today’s market is far more challenging in this regard. Most vendors now have to take care of security as a vital aspect of application development or face serious repercussions. Similarly, in APM, vendors now have to ensure they are providing a safe environment for users. Being a SaaS application, Datadog has had to boost its game on security. It has been steadily adding security features in recent years. Prometheus relies more on other open source tools for security. Datadog vs. Prometheus: Comparing Pricing Datadog prices out at around $15 per user, roughly (and it is $23 for the Enterprise version). Datadog has an open pricing policy with published prices, and generally low prices. Its pricing per-month options include per-host, per million events, and per GB of analyzed log files. But Gartner noted that some large deals entail large upfront spending. According to the analyst firm, this can lead to over- and under-provisioning. Prometheus is free. But full functionality demands personnel well-versed in open source. That can come at a salary premium. If existing personnel or outside contractors already working for your firm are competent in Apache-based applications, though, Prometheus certainly wins on pricing. Datadog vs. Prometheus: Summary There is no doubt that Datadog and Prometheus are both excellent tools. They both can solve a great many challenges related to application performance monitoring and beyond. Datadog is certainly the one to choose based solely on APM functions. Prometheus enters that arena to some degree, but its strengths lie elsewhere. For those specifically in need of event monitoring and metric monitoring tools, Prometheus comes out ahead of Datadog. Datadog takes an infrastructure monitoring approach geared toward analytics and application performance. It is focused on performance measurement for cloud services and is particularly adept at measuring the performance of databases and servers, as well as measuring performance in a multicloud world. Since Datadog is aimed at monitoring infrastructure at scale, it’s used primarily by mid-sized companies and large enterprises. It is also favored by DevOps and IT to address cloud and infrastructure performance. Prometheus is an open source tool and is likely to be favored by those familiar with other Apache-based platforms. It is unlikely that such users would think of using Datadog for event monitoring or metric monitoring. If your APM needs are basic, you can probably do just fine with Prometheus too. And any users wanting real-time monitoring should move Prometheus onto the shortlist.

In addition, several rack servers, blade servers, network switches, 17 airflow guides and one system board were either missing or suffered damage. Interestingly, UIDAI didn’t file the complaint but a manager of HP Enterprises India who supplied the devices did. Though the theft happened in its building, the UIDAI did not file a complaint. Instead, it denied the theft altogether. Also Read | UIDAI plans to go global; 99.5% in India have Aadhaar On January 13, DH sent a set of queries to the deputy director-general and three other officers of the UIDAI’s regional office in Bengaluru. As a theft in UIDAI data centre has implications to national security, DH sought to know what steps the agency has taken to trace the missing devices. Replying to the mail on January 14, UIDAI deputy director Ashok Lenin said no such incident has happened. “There was no such theft from our office; therefore we are unable to answer your queries.” Besides the denial, the entire incident has been kept under wraps with the police not providing a copy of the FIR even when a request was filed under the RTI Act. Also Read | UIDAI open to looking at solutions on 'partial authentication': CEO However, a senior police officer said they have nothing to hide. “They have their own security. The whole facility is secured by them. After that, they have no clue. It is true that they want to keep it confidential,” he said. DH accessed a copy of the FIR against “unknown” persons. The FIR said the theft of Rs 2-crore worth items took place between October 5, 2020, and September 17, 2021, and listed the missing items. “The process of installing the devices was still pending and the theft came to light during the review of the UIDAI building,” the summary of the complaint stated. Another officer noted that it would be impossible for an outsider to break into the data centre. “Even officials visiting the centre have to go through several checks. The possibility of a thief entering the premises, let alone accessing the third floor, is ruled out,” the officer said, refusing to speak further on the issue. Also Read | UIDAI working to use smartphones as 'universal authenticator', says CEO UIDAI has come under the scanner over cases of data theft. The authority had admitted that data of 7.8 crore people in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was illegally accessed by an IT firm. The Madras High Court is hearing a case about BJP accessing the Aadhaar data to profile voters in Puducherry. A retired officer of the ACP rank said the theft in Bengaluru needs to be taken seriously even if the devices were not storing the data. “The theft has been committed by someone who has sound knowledge of the building and is equipped with the necessary technical knowledge. The data centre was a fortress guarded by central security forces (CISF). It will be interesting to see what the police can do other than filing an FIR. Why UIDAI, which found the theft while reviewing the building, did not file the complaint is anyone’s guess. Officials have to come clean on the matter, which involves a building that stores the data of crores of people,” he said.

link : https://www.dvm360.com/view/expanded-practice-management-software-features-streamlined-automation Shepherd Veterinary Software is expanding their practice management platform’s automation capabilities for a more streamlined service. According to Cindy Barnes, CVM, CVSMT, the company’s founder and a practicing veterinarian, the software’s automation tools will allow users to seamlessly move through their days with improved peace of mind that nothing will get missed. “My primary goal in designing Shepherd was to create a [subjective objective assessment plan (SOAP)] that was so simple and efficient, it could be completed by the end of the appointment,” said Barnes, in a company press release. “Our development team's mantra is to reduce time-wasting redundancies by streamlining tasks such as invoicing, discharge instructions, and reminders.” The company’s veterinary practice management software is designed to work the way vets work, with easy-to-use SOAP-based medical records and automation tools. Studies show veterinary practices lose as much as $60,000 in annual revenue per doctor due to missed charges for simple add-ons and procedures, according to the Shepherd release. “Automating the invoicing process based on treatment and other actions in the medical record seemed like a no-brainer and an easy way to capture those missed charges.” Barnes added. The platform’s streamlined invoicing tools are designed to pull treatment and dosage calculations directly from the medical record upon discharge, helping to ensure that all charges are collected. Discharge instructions automatically get prepared based on diagnosis and the treatment plan, including what medication to give the pet and how best to manage the recovery process. Based on procedures performed, reminders can be configured to automatically send emails to clients and follow-up tasks are generated automatically for the appropriate team members. The streamlined automation of the practice management software can help ensure the best patient care and eliminates the need for a technician to take extra time to create follow-up tasks, according to Shepherd.

Link : https://www.google.com/amp/s/seekingalpha.com/amp/article/4488661-salesforce-continue-to-have-mixed-feelings-on-this-software-giant Software industry veterans are uniquely aware that salesforce.com (CRM) is the company that started the whole SaaS craze. When Marc Benioff was still a protege of Larry Ellison at Oracle (ORCL), he envisioned that software didn't need to sit on somebody's computer, but that it could be shared and consumed on the internet. Fast forward twenty years, and Salesforce remains both the original and one of the largest SaaS companies on the market. Like other software/SaaS stocks, Salesforce has fallen in sympathy with the remainder of the market. Salesforce has shed ~30% of its value from peaks, and year-to-date alone, its losses have topped 20%. Investors are now wondering: where is the bottom for Salesforce.com? Throughout the years, I have vacillated between positive and negative views on Salesforce.com. Now, after balancing the company's most recent business trends plus its latest price, I retain mixed feelings on the company and am neutral on the stock. First, a word on Salesforce's valuation. At current share prices near $197, Salesforce has a market cap of $193.88 billion. After netting off the $9.39 billion of cash and $10.59 billion of debt on Salesforce's most recent balance sheet (years of persistently extravagant M&A spending have finally pushed Salesforce into a net debt position, which is rare among tech stocks), the company's resulting enterprise value is $195.09 billion. Salesforce FY23 outlook (Salesforce Q3 earnings release) Meanwhile, for FY23 (which for Salesforce is the fiscal year ending in January 2023), the company has issued a revenue growth guidance of ~20% y/y to $31.7-$31.8 billion. Using the midpoint of that revenue range, we arrive at a current valuation of 6.1x EV/FY22 revenue. Historically, Salesforce's valuation has typically traded in a range between ~5.5 and 8.5x forward revenue, so the company has now essentially reverted back to "normal" valuations without being either too cheap or too expensive. There are puts and takes on the fundamentals as well. On the bright side for Salesforce, growth is holding up surprisingly well. The fact that Salesforce can stretch toward ~$30 billion in annual revenue and still project to grow ~20% y/y is no easy feat. It's not simple to find another ~$5 billion of revenue to add (though knowing Salesforce, a chunk of that revenue will come from acquisitions). The fact that core Sales Cloud revenue (which is Salesforce's second-highest revenue generator behind Service Cloud) is still adhering to high-teens growth is also disproving some bears who think Salesforce is operating in an over-saturated market. At the same time, concerns for Salesforce's profitability continue to abound. At this massive scale, Salesforce is only breakeven from a GAAP perspective. Pro forma operating margins are healthy, but only because Salesforce utilizes generous stock comp that gets excluded from pro forma metrics. Headcount continues to grow, and its aggressive M&A playbook usually doesn't help its path to profitability either. In short: I think Salesforce is neither an obvious buy or sell at the moment. It may be worth a small trial position or adding to your waitlist, but I'm not jumping to buy loads of Salesforce right now despite the recent dip. Growth durability We'll touch on the positives for Salesforce, which is the durability of its growth despite its massive scale, first. Salesforce's total revenue in Q3 grew 27% y/y to $6.86 billion, beating Wall Street's expectations of $6.80 billion (+25% y/y). The chart below showcases how Salesforce's revenue in Q3 came in by product line: Salesforce growth trends (Salesforce Q3 investor presentation) The highlight here: Sales Cloud, which is Salesforce's original product and its main cash cow, saw 17% y/y growth to $1.5 billion. Growth also accelerated versus 15% y/y growth in Q2. Service Cloud, now Salesforce's largest revenue generator, also saw strong 20% y/y growth $1.7 billion. Meanwhile, platform revenue grew 51% y/y to $1.3 billion in revenue, Salesforce's strongest contributor from both a growth percentage and incremental-dollar perspective - though, it must be noted that this growth also came from the acquisition of Slack which closed in Q2 and had no comp in the prior-year period. On the Q3 earnings call, new co-CEO Bret Taylor also made some anecdotal comments on the strength of Slack's growth: So Slack outperformed our expectations in the first full quarter as a part of the Salesforce family. The number of customers on Slack who spent over $100,000 was up 44% year-over-year. And adoption of Slack Connect was up an astonishing 176% year-over-year. Slack is not just a product, Slack is a network, and it's just incredible to see that growth. Slack also continues to innovate at an unbelievable pace. Slack Huddles, which is Slack's new real-time audio capability, is already used weekly by over 1/3 of Slack users. And Slack Clips, the new asynchronous video capability, are being played nearly 1 million times a week. And this month at Slack Frontiers, which I hope all of you have watched; and if you haven't, you can watch it online. Stewart and the team are now the next generation of Slack’s platform, and it's going to truly transform the way companies think about workflows and automation [...] Slack has already transformed the way we work at Salesforce. Since we have deployed Slack internally, we sent 46% fewer e-mails. And in the last 30 days alone, our employees have sent nearly 60 million Slack messages and conducted 500,000 Slack Huddles. We run Salesforce on Slack." Profitability lacking Growth, however, was never really a concern for Salesforce - investors were always certain that if Salesforce ever lacked growth to hit its long-term targets of maintaining >20% y/y growth, it would buy a new company to fill the gaps. Where Salesforce has always disappointed has been on profitability. In Q3, Salesforce's GAAP operating margin fell to 0.6%, down 350bps from 4.1% in the year-ago quarter. It's also a massive decline from 8.8% margins in Q2.Salesforce margin trends (Salesforce Q3 investor presentation) From a pro forma margin perspective, the 19.8% pro forma operating margin in Q3 was flat to last year, and technically still puts Salesforce in the "Rule of 40" club (27% revenue growth plus 20% pro forma operating margins gives Salesforce a score of 47). But Salesforce is effectively burying twenty points of expenses in stock comp, which is a symptom of its "grandiose" attitudes toward spending and expansion. Investors have long warily eyed the company's $1 billion cost to complete Salesforce Tower, putting up hundreds of thousands of office square footage in prime San Francisco at the same time as many other tech companies are shrinking their physical footprints. In addition, Salesforce's headcount in Q3 rose at 27% y/y to 69.5k total employees. If the company is adding headcount at the same rate as it's growing its revenue, will it ever achieve the profitability investors have waited so long to see? Key takeaways Salesforce remains a mixed bag. While its recurring-revenue product portfolio and its dominance across many areas of enterprise software almost guarantee that Salesforce will eventually rebound from its current <$200 price handle, I don't see Salesforce materially outperforming the S&P 500 in 2022, hence my neutral rating.

Leanne Mostert, partner, and Cindy Leibowitz, knowledge lawyer at Webber Wentzel explain below. Have you ever purchased an electrical appliance or device, only to discover shortly afterwards that the model is obsolete? A US non-profit organization that supports free software (the Software Freedom Conservancy) has launched legal proceedings against a US-based television manufacturer (Vizio) for failing to provide consumers with the source code for the software used in the Vizio smart television. The Software Freedom Conservancy alleges that these smart televisions use open-source software licensed under GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1 licences. These licences both contain “copyleft” provisions that require the licensee to distribute all modified versions of the licensed open-source software. According to the Software Freedom Conservancy, Vizio failed to do so sufficiently. The Software Freedom Conservancy’s argument is that, without the source code, consumers cannot modify or repair their televisions and therefore cannot preserve useful but obsolete software in the device. This is a novel matter, as it is the first one to deal with the rights of consumers as third-party beneficiaries under a copyleft licence, as opposed to the matter being brought by a copyright holder as a copyright infringement claim. The Software Freedom Conservancy argues that Vizio should have provided customers with the source code for its products and that Vizio should have informed customers about their rights, e.g., their right to repair. The matter is likely to have some significant Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), consumer law and IP implications, from a global and local South African perspective.Connectivity and access to data is an increasingly serious concern in addressing and closing the digital divide. The pandemic has caused an increased demand for electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and home entertainment gadgets. This demand has put massive pressure on global supply chains, particularly the supply of chips (semiconductors), which are needed for electronics to function. If consumers can repair technology products independently of their suppliers, this could prolong the usage of devices and reduce the demand on suppliers to source chips and deliver new stock to retailers. In addition, enabling customers to repair their devices will lead to prolonged usage and equate to reduced e-waste (electronic waste). E-waste is toxic to the environment and is becoming more prevalent due to the surge in demand for technology since the onset of the pandemic. These developments will foster greater accountability by businesses to the social and environmental considerations of supplying technology products to consumers, which ultimately demonstrates good corporate Legislators across the globe are taking great strides in enhancing consumer-centric laws. In South Africa, the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 (CPA) provides consumers with the right to safe, good-quality goods. The CPA states that this right includes receiving goods that will be usable and durable for a reasonable period, having regard to their use and the circumstances of their supply. Vizio’s failure to provide the Software Freedom Conservancy with the source code for the software used in its smart television could contravene the CPA. Arguably, this failure results in the television ceasing to be usable if the software becomes redundant shortly after the television has been purchased, which contravenes the right to receive usable and durable goods. Interestingly, the CPA’s definition of “consumer” includes a user of goods or beneficiary of services, irrespective of whether that user or beneficiary was a party to the transaction. If the matter was being decided in a South African court, this definition would enable the Software Freedom Conservancy to argue that consumers have rights as third party beneficiaries under a copyleft licence. IP law The outcome of this case may open a can of worms, allowing consumers to assert their rights over devices that use open-source software. There would be many commercial and IP issues for software developers and contracting parties to consider in developing and licensing proprietary software, which frequently incorporates open-source software. In particular, software developers will need to carefully consider whether they must make some source code freely available to the public. This will naturally have commercial and financial implications, for example, the pricing of a product incorporating open-source software may increase. Licence agreements will need to be carefully constructed to ensure compliance with open-source licences, whilst still ensuring that the copyright holder does not abandon any of its rights in and to the proprietary software. These are only some of the IP issues that may arise.

Link : https://scitechdaily.com/r2c-an-open-source-tool-for-software-security/ The startup r2c, founded by MIT alumni, offers a database of software security checks to simplify the process of securing code. The unfortunate reality of the software security industry is that it’s much easier to attack a system than it is to safeguard it. Hackers only need to find one vulnerability to have success, while software developers need to protect their code against all possible attacks. The asymmetry means that when a solo programmer unwittingly makes a po[CENSORED]r app, it quickly becomes a vulnerable fish in an ocean of threats. Larger companies have software security teams, but they’ve developed a reputation among developers for slowing down deployments as they painstakingly review lines of code to safeguard against attacks. Now the startup r2c is seeking to make securing software a more seamless experience with an open-source tool for proofreading code. In the same way that Grammarly finds grammatical errors or opportunities for improvement in essays and emails, r2c’s tool, called Semgrep, parses lines of code to check for thousands of potential bugs and vulnerabilities. At the heart of Semgrep is a database of more than 1,500 prewritten rules that security professionals can incorporate into their code scans. If they don’t see one they want, they can write their own rules using r2c’s intuitive interface and add it to the database for others. “If you know how to program in a language, you can now write rules and extend Semgrep, and that’s where you basically democratize this field that has only been accessible to people with highly specialized skills,” says r2c Head of Product Luke O’Malley ’14, who co-founded the company with Isaac Evans ’13, SM ’15 and Drew Dennison ’13. “Now that anyone can write a rule, you can tap into people’s specialized knowledge of their fields. That’s the big breakthrough. Semgrep is an open-source project that’s by developers, for developers.”In addition to simplifying the process of implementing code standards, r2c has fostered a community of security professionals who can share ideas and brainstorm solutions to the latest threats. That support ecosystem has proven crucial in a rapidly evolving industry in which security professionals may wake up on any given morning and read about new vulnerabilities exposed by hacks to some of the biggest tech companies on the planet. “It can be frustrating to see that computers are so insecure even though they’re 40 or 50 years old,” Dennison says. “I like to remind myself of automobiles. Sixty years into the automotive world we still didn’t have seat belts or airbags. It was really when we started measuring safety and having standards that the industry improved. Now your car has all kinds of fancy safety features. We’d love to do the same thing for software.”

Link : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/major-german-retailer-intel-motherboard-sales-surge According to data released by German retailer Mindfactory, via Twitter's TechEpiphany, Intel motherboard revenue has surpassed AMD motherboard revenue for the first time in years. During week 7 of 2022, Intel motherboard brought in €234,656 (53%), while AMD motherboards sales raised €208,236 (47%). Germany is a traditional AMD stronghold, especially in recent years, since the Zen architecture improved AMD's competitive position. The established AMD - Germany coziness makes the swing to Intel in Germany all the more worthy of comment. Let's get straight to some figures. We have put together a quick table to try and establish some comparisons, to sketch trend lines roughly. As well as the AMD and Intel jostling, you can see various Intel architectures battle over the wallets of PC enthusiasts, gamers, and other keen DIYers. Some other data points are essential to highlight. Firstly, Intel's total units sold for the weeks charted were 670, 800, and 1350, respectively. In units sold, Intel is still, therefore, lagging AMD. Still, Intel's momentum may continue to win the numbers race, especially as more mainstream and entry-level solutions arrive - an area where AMD hasn't proliferated processors in its current generation.Christmas Was the Quiet Before Intel's CES 2022 Storm Some other observations from the table are that the Christmas period was relatively quiet for motherboard sales. Motherboards aren't traditional Christmas stocking fillers, or even significant gifts, in the same way, complete devices like pre-built PCs or laptops are. Additionally, most savvy computer DIYers would know very well that Intel would release its mainstream Alder Lake CPU family and accessibly priced motherboards in early January. Some might even expect more AMD desktop processors to launch at CES 2022. In 2022 Week 07, tabulated above, you can see that LGA motherboard sales have taken off. There are many B660 and H610 chipset series choices, whereas the previous Intel datapoint only covered expensive Z690 series motherboards. Interestingly, the Intel ASPs haven't declined as much as one might expect between 2021 Week 51 and 2022 Week 07. With all the new motherboard and CPU choices out there in 2022, the market has seen quite a shakeup. To help make the best choices, you can look through our recently updated guides, such as the Best Motherboards 2022 for Gaming, by Socket and Chipset, and our guide about AMD vs. Intel: Which CPUs Are Better in 2022 - from earlier this week.
