  1. Intel's first discrete graphics card of the Arc generation—its first attempt at a gaming graphics card in many a long year—is finally out. In China. For an unfathomable price(opens in new tab). Which also means we're getting independent performance reviews of the discrete Arc A380 Alchemist GPU. And it doesn't look good. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out exactly why Intel took this approach. But whatever the reasoning behind it's release as the vanguard of Intel's push into discrete graphics cards, the Arc A380 looks like a GPU that can't even compare with Nvidia's last-gen GTX 1650. Unless you count synthetic 3DMark tests, that is, where it surprisingly outperforms Nvidia's old entry-level card, as well as AMD's RDNA 2-based RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT(opens in new tab). That's in both the Time Spy and ray tracing Port Royal benchmarks. That would be an impressive result if it wasn't for the fact that the actual game benchmarks shown by the Shenmedoungce on Bilibili(opens in new tab) (via Videocardz(opens in new tab)) didn't have the Intel GPU behind all three of those rival cards in every test it ran. They're not strange games either, with League of Legends, GTA V, PUBG, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Forza Horizon 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 all given a run out on the Arc GPU. I mean, it can run them all, which is grand. But when your new entry-level graphics card can't compete with an entry-level GeForce GPU released over three years ago, well, we've got a bit of an issue. The best result is in the Vulkan-based run of RDR2, where the A380 is only a bit behind the RX 6400 and GTX 1650, hitting 59 fps at 1080p where the others manage 67 and 70 fps respectively. Still, a tough pill to swallow. The testing machine makes sense, too. It's an Intel Core i5 12400-based system, on a B660 motherboard, with 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM, and Windows 11 Pro. The comparative cards are from MSI for the Nvidia RTX 3050 and GTX 1650, and from Yeston for the RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT. Maybe the issue is in drivers, which might explain why Intel has been so behind with the launch of its first discrete cards. And also why it's chosen to let the low-end A380 limp onto the market in China alone, mostly so it can still claim to have launched Arc in the first half of the year. I'm really hoping it is drivers, because the disparity between the 3DMark and gaming numbers are so stark as to be baffling. It's like Intel purely designed the GPU to perform in 3DMark and is now struggling to match that with actual game engines that developers actually use. I guess this is why Intel is so resolutely holding back its higher-end versions of the Alchemist architecture, because if it can claw back the in-game performance to more closely match the levels on offer in the synthetic 3DMark tests, then it's got a far better chance of success. If Intel had followed the release cadence of other GPU manufacturers, and launched its flagship, best-performing cards first, they would have been slaughtered. As it is, any positivity towards Intel's GPU venture is rapidly evaporating and we're all waiting to see how bad it gets when the top-end A700-series cards do finally get launched. The slow drip-feed of Arc releases, with the laptop GPUs still tough to get hold of, and the desktop ones region-locked and limited, is making this whole new graphics card venture from Intel hard to watch. Hopefully Intel can do something about the gaming performance between now and that far off release date, because the industry could really do with a third way in the GPU market. https://www.pcgamer.com/following-intels-graphics-card-misadventures-is-like-watching-a-slow-motion-freeway-pile-up/

  3. Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition releases tomorrow on Steam(opens in new tab), and not a moment too soon. This remastering has been handled by Nightdive Studios, an outfit you could fairly describe as restoration specialists, while the original game was arguably the crown jewel of the late, great Westwood Studios, best-known for the Command & Conquer series. A realtime adventure game that is, amusingly enough, set in 2019 Los Angeles, Blade Runner tells its own story within the universe of the cult classic 1982 movie. At the time it was billed as having one of the richest environments ever created, and it still looks the absolute business. For those unfamiliar with Blade Runner, the title is what people who hunt down replicants (perfectly human androids) are called. The great innovation, and still one of the best ideas ever for a licensed game, is that each story runthrough changes which of the characters are replicants. This system features over 70 characters, all motion-captured, all with their own agendas, and includes actors from the 1982 film including Sean Young, James Hong, Joe Turkel, Brian James, and William Sanderson. In other words, this is a detective adventure where the mystery changes each time through. The reason it's held in such high esteem is how all-in Westwood went on capturing the movie feel through the mechanics. As well as the brilliance of the replicants idea, the game features realtime weather that has different effects on your character, endless movie gadgets like the ESPER photo analysis machine, the Voigt-Kampff replicant detection test, and police Spinners. Here's a more in-depth explainer on why this is such a special game: The original is available on GOG, but this Enhanced Edition seems to have been handled with great care and subtlety. It's all about preserving the original's look and feel as much as possible (the press release calls it "a faithful restoration"). The official word on what the Enhanced Edition does to the original goes as follows: Reconstruction and upressing of original Westwood VQA Videos Cinematic Video frame rates updated from 15fps to 60fps Modern HD Display Enhanced “Knowledge Integration Assistant"" (KIA) and clue user interface Enhanced Subtitle support Modern gamepad support SMAA Anti Aliasing Anisotropic texture filtering Nightdive has been working on this one for a while: It was initially intended for release in 2020, but various complications (including no-one being able to find the original source code(opens in new tab)) saw delays. The studio is also currently working on the System Shock remake(opens in new tab). Westwood's Blade Runner brilliantly captures the mood of Ridley Scott's movie, and this is a welcome return. It's ambitious, maybe over-ambitious, unforgettable, and has an atmosphere like no other(opens in new tab). https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/enhanced-edition-of-one-of-the-greatest-licensed-games-ever-made-out-tomorrow/

  5. Midnight Suns is a tactics-RPG being developed by XCOM studio Firaxis (who have called it "the complete opposite" of XCOM 2, I should note), which stars various Marvel superheroes alongside a player-made character called the Hunter. It was inspired by on-again off-again Marvel comic Midnight Sons, which began as a crossover of occult-themed superheroes. Some of the old lineup feature in the videogame, like Doctor Strange, Blade, and Ghost Rider, though the Firaxis version adds new blood and characters likely to be recognized by fans of the movies. Marvel has announced the comic book will return this year(opens in new tab), renamed Midnight Suns like the game and with a lineup that includes a few characters added to the digital version's roster: Wolverine, Magik from The New Mutants, and Nico Minoru from Runaways. It'll also share Blade and an incarnation of Ghost Rider (the old Midnight Sons books had like three different Ghost Riders over the years, the current one is an Apache woman from the 19th century called Kushala), and add Zoe Laveau, a student of Doctor Strange from the series Strange Academy. The Firaxis game pits the Midnight Suns against Lilith, Mother of Demons, who is out to summon an Elder God and bring on an apocalypse. Pretty classic stuff for the team. The comic's press release is more vague on details, saying, "A dark prophesy and apocalyptic new villains with horrifying powers the likes of which Earth has never faced before ordains a team of Midnight Suns to rise and tear @#$% up!" The five-part miniseries is being written by Ethan Sacks, with art by Luigi Zagaria. Issue one comes out on September 14. The videogame is due on October 7 after being delayed from March, and will be coming to Steam(opens in new tab) and the Epic Games Store(opens in new tab). 8. Poco is reportedly launching a new smartphone this year and it is said to be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 10S. The Chinese brand is also expected to launch a Pro variant of the smartphone as well. The details of the rumoured smartphone were reportedly spotted in Mi Code. The handset was also spotted on the EEC certification list and the IMEI database. The vanilla and the Pro variants are said to be codenamed ‘rosemaryp' and ‘rosemaryp_pro', respectively. The rumoured handset is said to feature specifications similar to the Redmi Note 10S. According to a report from Xiaomiui, Poco is expected to launch a new phone that will be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 10S. The report said that the company will launch the rumoured smartphone in two variants, vanilla and Pro. The vanilla variant of the smartphone has been codenamed ‘rosemaryp' and the Pro variant has been codenamed ‘rosemaryp_pro'. The report added that the two rebranded variants were spotted on the Mi Code recently, and a month back on the EEC certification site and IMEI database. It was said that the rumoured smartphones will be released with the model number 2207117BPG and K7BP. Since, the smartphone is a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 10S, it can be assumed that the specifications of the rumoured handset will be similar to that of the Redmi smartphone. Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 10S in India in May last year. The smartphone is powered by the octa-core MedtaTek Helio G95 SoC coupled with the Mali-G76 MC4 GPU and a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. It launched with Android 11 with MIUI 12.5 on top. The smartphone features a 6.43-inch full-HD+ AMOLED touchscreen that is designed to deliver 1,100 nits of peak brightness. 9. I guess I shouldn't be surprised not to get any really juicy details about AMD's imminent CPU and GPU generations from Financial Analyst Day (FAD) 2022(opens in new tab). After all, it's more about marketing where AMD is right now and where it's going in the next couple of years, so analysts can wax lyrical about why investors should throw money at Dr. Lisa T Su et al. A FAD then is not so much about what the next-generation of Ryzen CPU and Radeon GPU hardware is going to do, or how it might plan to implement different technological wizardry in order to do it. All we really got out of the different presentations—from such AMD luminaries as Mark 'The Papermaster' Papermaster, Rick Bergman, and David Wang—was a selection of marketing buzzwords and a few extraneous performance-per-watt percentage gains. Which makes it hard to get too excited about what's coming up from the red team. Though given that the jaws of over-hyped expectation have bitten AMD in the collective posterior previously, maybe that's not such a bad thing. There was, however, the confirmation we are looking at an ~8% IPC uplift for the new Zen 4 desktop processors, which we'd kinda figured out from the combination of IPC and frequency making up the 15% gen-over-gen gains AMD touted at its Computex keynote last month. We've been spoiled by previous generational performance uplifts from AMD's processor design teams, to the point where a collective single thread gain in Cinebench R23 of 35% has been largely ignored because the actual Zen 4 architectural gains are expected to be less than 10%. Maybe the low-hanging fruit has already been picked from the Zen tree. It's worth remembering that, when things were stagnating over at Intel before it got its node game back on track, all you could expect of what were then the best new CPU generations was a 10% bump. So really, any real-world increase over and above that figure, whether that's because AMD's new chips can happily chow down on more power, or because they run at higher frequencies… well, that's just dandy. I guess I was foolishly hoping we'd get something more officially concrete from AMD about its next-gen GPUs than some vague noises about chiplet packaging(opens in new tab) and DisplayPort 2.0 support confirmation(opens in new tab). I want to be excited about AMD's new cards, and not just have to divine the trickles of truth from within the torrents of rumours, leaks, and speculation consistently cluttering up Twitter. Because the GPU rumours sound potentially very exciting, but I now want the truth, damn it. Yeah, I'm impatient... It's the chiplet thing which is the most intriguing, and something we've been speaking about for years(opens in new tab), but it's a shame there's no meat on the marketing bones of these presentations. Is AMD actually using a chiplet design in the same way as it has with Ryzen, and by that I mean is it going to have multiple actual GPU chiplets to really pump up the shader counts? All David Wang says about the 'advanced chiplet packaging' of the upcoming RDNA 3 GPU design is: "It allows us to continue to scale performance aggressively without the yield and the cost concerns of a large monolithic silicon. "It allows us to deliver the best performance at the right cost." From a financial perspective that's what you want to hear, and is one of the reasons the chiplet-based Ryzen CPUs were so successful from both a technical and manufacturing point of view. But I spoke to Wang a few years ago about a potential shift to MCM designs, and he laid out the difficulties inherent in using multiple GPU chiplets in gaming and visual terms. "To some extent you’re talking about doing CrossFire on a single package. The challenge is that unless we make it invisible to the ISVs [independent software vendors] you’re going to see the same sort of reluctance. "We’re going down that path on the CPU side," Wang continues, "and I think on the GPU we’re always looking at new ideas. But the GPU has unique constraints with this type of NUMA [non-uniform memory access] architecture, and how you combine features… The multithreaded CPU is a bit easier to scale the workload. The NUMA is part of the OS support so it’s much easier to handle this multi-die thing relative to the graphics type of workload." You can see that in the confirmation of 3D chiplet packaging for the CDNA 3 GPUs for the Radeon Instinct crew, that we're likely to see multiple compute chiplets on that side of things, but on the RDNA 3 side, I'm not convinced multi-GPU is ready for prime time gaming in a chiplet form. So, what could this chiplet setup be? The latest rumours suggest, even for the top two Navi 3x GPUs which are expected to be chiplet-based, those will only come with a single graphics compute die (GCD) with the actual chiplet packaging noises referencing the splitting off of the GPU's cache onto separate multi cache dies (MCDs). That would make things simple from a straight gaming performance point of view, and actually mean you can focus most of the die-size of a GCD on the actual core graphics stuff, shaving off the space you'd normally have for the cache memory. And if the IO and memory bus interconnects are shifted off the GCD that also frees up a lot of die space, too But again we're resorting to rumours to get engaged and excited about the possibilities. I'm just impatient; I'm sure it won't be that long until AMD actually gives us something chonky, architecture-wise, to get our teeth into. Maybe. Though with the expected RDNA 3 release window to start sometime in October, and that only being a mid-range kick off show, and a monolithic one at that, let's just say I'm not holding my breath. https://www.pcgamer.com/im-finding-it-hard-to-get-too-excited-about-amds-upcoming-tech-when-its-all-marketing-and-no-meat/

  11. In 2009, German studio Deck13—who would go on to make soulslikes Lords of the Fallen and The Surge series—released a third-person RPG in which you play Death's daughter. No, not Susan Sto Helit from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, though I'd kill for a game about her, but a corset-clad inhabitant of a fantasy version of Venice named Scarlett who fights with a detached scythe blade. Venetica didn't set the world on fire thanks to a degree of jankiness and somewhat shallow combat, but did earn some fans thanks to its unusual Renaissance setting and odd ideas like the lockpicking system, in which the ghosts of two thieves tell you which order to torque your four lockpicks. As part of GOG's summer sale, you can grab Venetica – Gold Edition for free(opens in new tab) right now. Be quick, as you've only got until 6am PST/2pm BST on Sunday, June 12 to grab it. It comes with some additional downloadable goodies, including a making of video, the soundtrack in mp3 format, the manual and an artbook (the latter in German), and something that's just labeled "Venice". As a 143MB download it's presumably not the entire Italian city, but rather a video tour of it. We've put together a selection of our own picks as the PC Gamer collection in GOG's summer sale, with discounts on some of our favorite games. 12. Apple iPhone 14 series is rumoured to launch at an upcoming event in September this year. The lineup is expected to include four models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. A recent tweet by a supply chain insider suggests a delay in panel shipments of the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone Pro Max. They are a month behind the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. However, the delay is not expected to affect the release date of the phones. DSCC analyst Ross Young on Twitter suggested that the panel shipments of iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max are a month behind the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. As per the tweet, the panel shipments for the larger models are starting in July, while the panel shipments for the smaller ones can begin in June. However, the tipster claims that there won't be a delay in launch because of this reason. The delay could be due to a lockdown in China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple is said to introduce four new iPhone 14 models in September this year. Some previous reports mentioned that iPhone 14 Pro models will be powered by the new A16 Bionic chip. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, on the other hand, are expected to pack the A15 Bionic chip that is available on the current iPhone 13 devices. The vanilla iPhone 14 is said to ditch the notched display. As per past leaks, screen sizes of the upcoming Apple phones are also expected to get a little bigger than the existing models. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are expected to sport 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen sizes, respectively. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are also said to get always-on display support through iOS 16. https://gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/iphone-14-pro-max-models-one-month-delay-shipment-apple-report-3056639
  13. AMD has unveiled plans for the next two years across its processor and graphics card lines at its Financial Analyst Day 2022(opens in new tab). This event is aimed at investors and analysts, and as such, it's heavy on promises and a little light on the actual details. Still, there are some new details about Zen 4(opens in new tab) and RDNA 3(opens in new tab) that are worth catching up on, plus there are some enticing plans on the laptop front too. The first mobile processors we'll see currently go by the codename "Phoenix Point" and are due in 2023. These will be manufactured using TSMC's 4nm process and feature the Zen 4 core architecture that we'll see debut on desktops this year, along with RDNA 3 graphics. Phoenix Point will also get the new Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE), which draws on AMD's recent acquisition of Xilinx, although what the benefit will be for day-to-day work and gaming isn't quite so obvious. What is much clearer, and more exciting, is the news that AMD seems to be upping its release schedule when it comes to integrated graphics. Promising us RDNA 3 in an APU next year is great news. We've only just got our hands on its RDNA 2-based APUs this year, with the launch of its Ryzen 6000 chips, and prior to that we've had to make do with its Vega-based graphics since 2018—we never did get to see RDNA 1 in an APU. Zen 4 should usher in plenty of improvements on its own, but when backed up by a next-gen GPU, I can't help but get excited about the prospect. Especially if it has enough Compute Units to actually game competently. The Steam Deck(opens in new tab) puts in a reasonable show with eight CUs using RDNA 2, so something of that order would be welcome for thin and light gaming. Hopefully, it won't try and get by with just two CUs as rumored for AMD's Mendocino. We should have mobile versions of its discrete RDNA 3 and probably next-gen Nvidia GPUs by the time Phoenix Point launches, but it's good to have the option of gaming at lower settings on more affordable machines. AMD has also revealed what will be following on from Phoenix Point. "Strix Point" will drop in 2024 and will feature Zen 5 and RDNA 3+ silicon, although it isn't clear at this stage what that plus brings to the game. It may simply be a more energy-efficient refresh. The fact that AMD hasn't stated what production process Strix Point uses, leaves things pretty open to interpretation too. If you take away one thing from AMD's revelations, it's that its mobile APUs finally look like the real deal. Not held back by an older GPU, but utilizing the very latest silicon. That's something we've been hoping for since the original Zen dropped, and while we have that now with its Ryzen 6000 chips, the idea that it's going to maintain this for at least the next two years is great news. Let's just hope they have enough CUs to make them relevant. https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-has-promising-plans-for-laptops-in-the-next-two-years/

  15. The Hollywood Reporter(opens in new tab) says Duke Nukem, the most infamously failed musclehead in videogame history, is headed to the big screen. The rights to a Duke Nukem film project have been picked up by Legendary Entertainment, according to the report, while Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of the Cobra Kai television series, are signed as producers. In some ways, it's a natural fit. Duke Nukem was originally created as a simplistic parody of 1980s action heroes, after all: He was all action, ass-kicking, and half-witted one-liners, and the only thing bigger than his guns were his biceps. The games moved from 2D platformer to 3D FPS in 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D, a brilliantly good shooter that earned criticism for embracing the stereotypes a little too enthusiastically. But in spite of its success, a new game in the series didn't come along until Duke Nukem Forever in 2011, which ejected the parody element and went all-in on "Duke is cool": It was widely panned, and tanked. On the surface, that makes a Duke Nukem film project seem like a risky proposition at best. I like '80s action films, but I appreciate them with appropriate levels of awareness and irony—and honestly, I don't think there's any macho star from that era who's even remotely as douchey as Duke. I sure wouldn't want a Duke Nukem action film played straight. But the involvement of Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg makes me think that there's a chance it could work. Cobra Kai(opens in new tab), which airs on Netflix, is a sequel to the Karate Kid films from the '80s, which is also a terrible idea on its face. Yet it's critically acclaimed and a commercial hit because of the way it subverts those original films: Characters are more developed and complex, bad guys struggle to be better (some of them, anyway), and through it all there's a subtle acknowledgement of the essential ridiculousness of the whole thing: Why are Ralph Macchio and William Zabka still so eager to beat the shit out of each other 40 years later? It's not hard to imagine a similar approach being taken with Duke, and I think it could be very effective. And it's not as though the concept of an anachronistic, not-too-bright "hero" forced to grapple with the realities of a world that's left him behind is a new and fresh concept: Mike Myers used it to turn himself into a superstar with the Austin Powers trilogy. A Gearbox rep confirmed that The Hollywood Reporter report is accurate, but did not comment on whether it will be directly involved in the project. A writer and director for the film have not yet been signed. https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/a-duke-nukem-movie-is-coming-from-the-makers-of-cobra-kai/

  20. Gone are the days of wildly huge and niche gaming laptops. Thanks to what can be packed into today's machines, the world of portable PC gaming is no longer a compromise. Rather, we see beautiful compact machines packing incredible specs ready to game on the go, but they often come with prices to match. Gaming laptops are rarely cheap, but sometimes you can get a good deal like this laptop currently on sale at Costco. It's fair to note you'll need membership with Costco to purchase this laptop, but the price is pretty worthwhile to give it a look. The MSI Leopard GP66 Laptop is currently on sale right now for $1349.99 USD(opens in new tab). That's $450 off its previously marked price of $1,799.99. This particular Leopard is packing an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 paired with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU. Other leopards with these spots on the market are currently closer to that non discounted price, or at best case within $100 or so dollars of it. Given the much larger discount Costco is offering, it's probably the best deal going for this laptop right now, though we are always tracking MSI gaming laptop deals.(opens in new tab) This gaming laptop also features a 144Hz 1080p 15-inch screen, as well as a 1TB SSD and weighs just over 2kgs. These specs position this as a great portable gaming machine that should be able to play anything on the market, and hopefully without generating too much heat. Coming from Costco, a membership is required to make the purchase, but the savings on this laptop would make up for the cost of membership and then some. If you were looking to check out Costco anyway, this deal makes it a smart time to do so and get yourself a sweet gaming laptop at the same time. There's also a limit of five of these per member, so maybe it could be time to bother that friend with a Costco card. According to the listing website, this deal on the MSI Leopard GP66 Laptop is also limited and will stop being available on the 19th of June 2022. That is of course if stock doesn't sell out before then. Given this is a pretty great deal, it might be smart to get in fast if you've got your heart set on changing your spots. https://www.pcgamer.com/this-msi-rtx-3070-gaming-laptop-is-dollar450-off-going-for-dollar1350/

  22. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge(opens in new tab) promises that same magic you felt at a pizza parlor arcade in the '90s, and we won't have to wait for it much longer: the game is releasing June 16 and features fan-favorite, Casey Jones, as a playable character. Shredder's Revenge primarily builds on the legacy of Turtles in Time, which is probably what you're thinking of if you're picturing a Turtles brawler in your head. Shredder's Revenge is co-created by Dotemu and Tribute Games, who've previously worked on Streets of Rage 4 and Panzer Paladin respectively. For our April cover story, we got to see demo footage of the vibrant pixel art and advances to the Ninja Turtles beat 'em up formula, like character-unique movesets and improved hit registering. From the game's Steam page: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge features groundbreaking gameplay rooted in timeless classic brawling mechanics, brought to you by the beat ’em up experts at Dotemu (Streets of Rage 4) and Tribute Games. Bash your way through gorgeous pixel art environments and slay tons of hellacious enemies with your favorite Turtle, each with his own skills and moves - making each run unique! Choose a fighter, use radical combos to defeat your opponents and experience intense combats loaded with breathtaking action and outrageous ninja abilities. Stay sharp as you face off against Shredder and his faithful Foot Clan alone, or grab your best buds and play with up to four players simultaneously!" The game's final trailer revealed the inclusion of '90s badass parody, Casey Jones, alongside its impending release date. I'll be interested to see how this hockey mask-wearing beefy bruiser fits into the character balance we were shown earlier in the Spring—unlike the original games, each character in Shredder's Revenge is balanced to offer advantages and disadvantages in terms of speed, reach and attack power. https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-shredders-revenge-reveals-casey-jones-launches-next-week/
