https://www.pcgamer.com/rust-is-probably-getting-pets/ As always when it comes to keeping up with survival game Rust, you can wait for announcements from the Facepunch development team or you can go to Shadowfrax on YouTube, the charming and shockingly well-informed Rust guru who can tell you what's what a good month in advance of the official newswire. In a new video today (you can watch it below) Shadowfrax reveals that Rust is—most likely—getting pets at some point in the future. Pets! The clue originated from the Facepunch commits log where a new "pets" branch appeared the other day. That's admittedly not much to go on but Shadowfrax seems confident that it's "exactly what it sounds like" and says it will probably be based in part on the system from Halloween that lets players build and control a Frankenstein's monster. What kind of pets? We don't know yet, though hopefully something more cuddly than a reanimated corpse. There are plenty of animals in Rust like horses, wolves, boars, chickens, and more recently, sharks and polar bears, but it remains to be seen if Rust will add taming systems for an existing animal or introduce an entirely new one. I would personally suggest not getting too attached to your pet, just based on my experience trying to keep a horse fed and healthy for several days and then logging in to find nothing but a pile of poop left in the stable. I miss you, Pony Soprano. Shadowfrax also noticed a commit branch testing a new rail network, though the log entry is accompanied by a comment from the developer stating "don't get too excited, this is never going to work." Adding a rail system to a procedurally generated map does sound pretty tricky, which is probably why the current rail system is underground where it won't interfere with anything topside. But a surface train sounds like it'd be a lot of fun, especially if it's another moving monument like the cargo ship, packed with good loot and lots of enemies. Who wouldn't want to jump on a horse and hijack a locomotive as it choo-choos around the map? See, I was warned not to get excited and I still got excited. There's also an incoming fix to an exploit involving the new spray cans, which players can use to quickly change the skins of their furniture and other building items, like doors. The issue is, players can raid another player's base and, provided they're able to get tool cupboard control, they could then change the base's door skins from "solid door" to "door with a window". So they could peek inside different rooms and see if they were worth breaking into before breaking into them. That is, frankly, hilarious. The exploit is being fixed, however, so in the future it won't work on locked doors unless you open them with a code first. That's the big Rust news, though you can also expect some tweaks to the new snowmobiles, the addition of an "always sprint" option, and a handful of new achievements coming in the future. And hey, subscribe to Shadowfrax if you haven't already.

https://www.techspot.com/news/93342-amd-hits-record-256-share-overall-x86-market.html The PC processor market grew to 500 million units in 2021 thanks to continuing strong demand from consumers and organizations for faster, more capable machines. AMD’s overall share of the x86 market is still growing, but it’s unclear if the trend will continue this year. AMD continues to make gains in market share against Intel in the x86 processor market. According to a new report from Mercury Research, Team Red in Q4 2021 enjoyed a 25.6 percent share of the overall market for CPUs built on the x86 architecture, the highest it’s seen since 2006. It’s also a 3.6 percent year-over-year increase, which isn’t bad considering the ongoing chip shortage. To put things in context, AMD has been gaining market share against Intel for 11 quarters in a row, especially when it comes to PC, console, and IoT x86 products. The only exception was in the area of desktop and laptop processors, where Intel managed to claw back some market share in the three months ending in December 2021. This was mostly thanks to Tiger Lake mobile parts and a combination of Rocket Lake and Comet Lake desktop products. Luckily for AMD, its server shipments helped it reach a 10.7 percent market share, and this is the 11th quarter where it chipped away at rival Intel’s foothold in this area. Demand for consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S and Sony’s PlayStation 5 also remained high, contributing to AMD’s overall market share in Q4 2021. The findings are echoed by an Omdia report, except for AMD’s server CPU share being estimated at 18.3 percent as opposed to 10.7 percent in the analysis made by Mercury Research. Also worth noting is that the overall x86 market grew 16 percent in 2021, with almost 471 million units shipped across all categories. Mercury Research also notes that SoCs for Chromebooks and Apple Silicon Macs totaled 29 million units, most of them being of the latter variety. Intel boss Pat Gelsinger isn’t concerned with AMD’s gains, and believes the latter company is “in the rearview mirror” following the release of the Alder Lake family of CPUs. Team Blue does seem to have some compelling 12th generation processors to sway buyers away from AMD, but we’ll have to see how they stack up against upcoming offerings from Team Red.

https://www.techradar.com/news/this-neglected-microsoft-productivity-tool-is-finally-getting-some-welcome-updates The web app of Microsoft OneNote is getting a range of updates and upgrades as the company looks to help users boost their efficiency and productivity. The company has revealed a host of new features for the Microsoft OneNote web app, including a new mode switcher and an improved copy and paste experience. Going forward, the company hopes that its note-taking app will play a crucial role in helping users across the world transition to the new way of hybrid working. "We are happy to announce a set of upcoming features and improvements in OneNote for the web and in Teams to better serve millions of customers who have turned to these experiences for their notetaking needs over the last two years," Microsoft's Chetna Das wrote in a blog post announcing the news. "We are also investing in making these experiences faster, more reliable, and on par with the OneNote desktop apps so users can confidently get their jobs done on whatever platform they prefer." Not all the updates have been released immediately, with some rolling out gradually, and one, improved link sharing within Teams, scheduled for the future. Available now, the new mode switcher follows in the footsteps of other Office web apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to let users quickly switch between editing and viewing mode, helping prevent accidental changes to read-only sections or files where users may not have edit permissions. The improved copy and paste function will allow users to paste rich content such as tables and lists from external sources to a OneNote page without losing the source format. Users can also paste from the context menu user interface (UI) in Teams and the Chrome browser using the Ctrl+Shift+V shortcut to paste text only. There's also a zoom feature that will allow users to get a closer (or further away) look at their pages, and an option to lock pictures and printouts in place as a background. Also announced is the ability to re-size videos, an auto-inking with Stylus feature, and the ability for OneNote to remember the last page you were on. The news follows Microsoft's announcement in June 2021 that it would be combining the OneNote for Office and the OneNote for Windows 10 app from the Microsoft Store into a single app. By doing so, Microsoft was hoping to encourage even more users to try out OneNote, as well as removing any confusion over which app they need to install on their devices.

https://www.pcgamer.com/world-of-warcraft-eternitys-end-goes-live-on-february-22/ After a very long wait, Eternity's End is almost here. Blizzard announced today that World of Warcraft's next big content update—and the last one for the Shadowlands expansion—will go live on February 22. Patch 9.2, as it's more prosaically known, will feature a new zone called Zereth Mortis, "an otherworldly location that defies all concepts of reality or physics," with new World and Daily quests, a new World Boss, and new campaign chapters to work through. Naturally, there's also a new raid called Sepulchre of the First Ones, with 11 new bosses including Anduin Wrynn and a showdown with Zovaal the Jailer at the end. Assisting your cause will be a new allied faction, the Enlightened, whose assistance will enable players to equip two legendary items simultaneously. With a catch, of course—one of those two items must be a new Covenant legendary belt that's being added in the patch. The release of the 9.2 patch will also see the end of Shadowlands PvP season 2 and Mythic+ season 2. Mythic+ dungeons will still be playable using Season 2 affixes and rewards, and Mythic+ Ratings and seasonal achievements can still be earned—except for the 0.1% "Tormented Hero" title and achievement, which will be handed out "during the following weeks after the season ends." Eternity's End is a big deal, but an even bigger change will follow: Blizzard announced at the beginning of February that after years of undying enmity, a follow-on 9.2.5 patch will finally allow humans and orcs to fight together in raids and dungeons.Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80. https://www.techradar.com/news/the-first-android-13-beta-is-out-now-and-its-big-on-privacy Right on schedule, the first beta version of Android 13 has now been released by Google, but as usual this first release is a developer preview, so it’s not designed for consumers. In fact, if you download it and you aren’t a developer then you probably won’t see much that’s new or different, as the initial changes are largely hidden features aimed at developers. Highlights of this release include a photo picker tool, which allows users to select media files (such as photos) without having to grant the app they’re in access to their entire media library. So that’s aimed at maintaining your privacy and not giving apps more access than they need. There’s also a new ‘Nearby device permission for Wi-Fi’, which allows apps to discover and connect to nearby devices over Wi-Fi, without also needing access to your location. So again, this is a feature that has privacy in mind. Another change is the ability for the color of all app icons to match your theme if you’re using a Pixel phone. Currently, Google’s dynamic theming will change the color of app icons and other interface elements to complement whatever wallpaper you use, but it doesn’t work with third-party apps. With Android 13 it will, though developers will need to provide compatible icons. Google claims this support will eventually come to other phones too. There are also other tools very much aimed at developers, like a simplified process for adding custom Quick Settings tiles, while one other user-facing change is a per-app language preference, so you don’t need to have all apps defaulting to the same language, which could be handy if you’re multi-lingual (or trying to be). That’s about it. If you have a Google Pixel 4 onwards then you can grab this preview, but we’d strongly advise you don’t if you’re not a developer. It won’t be stable, and as you can see, there’s not much here for you. We’d expect more exciting features will appear in public betas.

https://www.techspot.com/news/93344-kioxia-western-digital-lose-65-exabytes-3d-nand.html In what is another blow to the component industry, Kioxia (formerly Toshiba) and Western Digital report that contamination issues have been found at their joint NAND production factories. Western Digital says that up to 6.5 exabytes of flash memory, or 6.5 million terabytes, have been affected. An amount that will doubtlessly have an impact on the market. In a statement (via Tom’s Hardware), Kioxia said that operations were halted at its Yokkaichi and Kitakami plants due to a component containing impurities involved in the production of BiCS 3D NAND flash memory, used in a range of SSDs and other products. The company added that it hoped for "early recovery to normal operation." Western Digital’s statement is the one to reveal that 6.5-exabyte figure. It adds that the company is moving to implement necessary measures that will restore the facilities to normal operational status as quickly as possible. The stoppage occurred in late January. Given the length of time it takes to manufacture 3D NAND flash chips, the disruption is likely to be felt for months after production restarts, whenever that might be. The likely outcome will be a shortage of NAND-based products and a rise in the price of the companies’ SSDs. Another unanswered question is whether any of the contaminated NAND has made it out into products that have already shipped, which could lead to recalls being issued. Although 6.5 exabytes is not a huge chunk of the 207-exabyte total capacity that was shipped in consumer and enterprise SSDs last year, the news comes at a time when the tech industry is already suffering component shortages. The incident took place just a few weeks after Samsung confirmed it will be adjusting operations at its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Xian after the entire Chinese city was put under lockdown following a surge in Covid-19 cases. Micron, which also has manufacturing facilities in the city, said that staff and contractor reductions have impacted output levels of DRAM assembly and test operations.

https://www.techradar.com/news/incoming-windows-11-task-manager-update-could-finally-tempt-you-to-upgrade Microsoft is planning to introduce some additional options into the current Task Manager, alongside other updates and new features planned for its Windows 11 operating system, at least according to a slew of leaks that have appeared in the last week. A good batch of these can be credited to Twitter user Albacore, an established and typically reliable source for Windows leaks, who previously reported that 'Stickers' will be introduced for your desktop wallpaper, as well as changes rolling out to the current notification system. On top of this, it seems that the current Task Manager in Windows 11 will also get some additional features, including the ability to get dedicated information regarding "App health" and "Battery health". This information was discovered within the recent Dev Channel build 22543 by another well established Windows leaker, FireCubeStudios It seems that additional features could also be included when the update is released to the public. As Neowin points out in its own reporting, Microsoft developers have commented to state this isn't a final design, so we could also get options relating to Startup applications. This isn't the first time we heard that Microsoft may be looking to revamp the Task Manager from its previously dated state, with some alterations being introduced in build 22538, but with this being a work in progress, it could be a while until this is fully rolled out to the public. While they're nowhere near as important as actual performance-based improvements and patches being developed to fix ongoing issues, these planned updates to streamline the Windows 11 experience for everyday users shouldn't be overlooked. The vast majority of folks who use the Windows 11 operating system won't be experts or enthusiasts, so simplifying the more 'complex' areas of the OS will hopefully streamline the process of new users getting comfortable using it. This is especially so in the case of people who have avoided upgrading from Windows 10 despite having compatible hardware out of the fear of needing to relearn how to use their laptop or desktop PC. There's still a lot to be resolved with the Windows 11 operating system before tech-savvy users are happy to make the upgrade, but with its new, modern look and general quality-of-life improvements, this is becoming a great choice for those with less experience using computers who don't want to be reliant on others to address issues they might face. These are the best laptops of 2022

https://www.techspot.com/news/93314-first-steam-deck-reviews-focus-cooling-controls-battery.html After months of waiting and an additional two-month delay, Valve’s Steam Deck is less than three weeks away from launching. The publisher, developer and distributor recently seeded review units to a handful of YouTube influencers to gauge their initial opinions, and the embargo has finally lifted. Linus from Linus Tech Tips describes the Steam Deck as arguably the most innovative gaming PC in the last 20 years. It starts with the inputs, and while there are plenty of them, it may be difficult for those with smaller hands to reach everything comfortably without readjusting your grip. As for the buttons, sticks and touch pads themselves, Linus said everything is on par quality-wise with controllers that ship alongside top-tier consoles. Cooling also wasn’t an issue, as the handheld’s design keeps surface temps at or near skin temperature, even during extending gaming sessions. As for performance, Linus said most users will be best served leaving the SoC profile on auto. But for enthusiasts, there is the option to fine-tune the power profile for your exact use case – for example, if you want to run a specific emulator that requires more CPU power than GPU power. When looking at performance numbers, it’s worth mentioning that Valve did hand-pick which games could be run in the early preview. Still, there are some heavy-hitters here including Forza Horizon 5, Devil May Cry 5, Control, Ghostrunner and Street Fighter V: CE. There were some issues with Forza, but this could be a software issue that should get worked out once a Windows driver becomes available. Linus was also impressed with battery life, but it was the Steam Deck’s screen that impressed him even more. It’s not shocking vibrant, nor does it exhibit over-the-top sharpness, but it excels in dimly-lit environments. He also praised the speakers as being excellent for their size. Software could make or break the Steam Deck, Linus concludes, as the device could use a lot of work in this category. Steve Burke from Gamers Nexus, meanwhile, has shared a 35-minute feature on the Steam Deck with a heavy focus on hardware (Valve is apparently still working on the software side, so not too much can be said there just yet). He starts out with a Schlieren imaging test, which visualizes the density gradient change of the air coming out of the top of the Steam Deck. If you’ve never seen this sort of test in action, it’s worth checking out just to familiarize yourself with it. Burke also wired up thermocouples to take direct measurements as close to the silicon as possible and conducted eight different scenarios with varying loads. No punches were pulled, as one torture test consisted of playing a game while charging from a low battery. Their results were largely in line with the in-house testing that Valve shared for validation purposes. The team tested with the Steam Deck’s back cover removed and found that in many cases, the rear cover actually helps with cooling, no doubt aiding in airflow routing. Burke did think that Valve could do a better job with fan speed transition, as the ramp and deramp in fan speed is quite noticeable. Speaking of fan speed and thus noise, under max power draw, noise was measures at around 37-38 dBA. Gamers Nexus also put the unit’s 40Whr battery – and Valve’s claim of anywhere from two to eight hours of runtime – to the test. Of course, the game(s) you are playing will largely dictate battery life. There’s a lot of data to comb over in this section, so for the sake of brevity, we’ll let you explore the video on your own to gather those test results.

https://www.pcgamer.com/minecraft-is-experimenting-with-frogs-ahead-of-the-next-update/ Ahead of the Wild Update arriving sometime in 2022, Minecraft Bedrock is testing out those fun new frog mobs that will be joining officially in version 1.19. The new version of Minecraft for Windows includes frogs, their tiny tadpole babies, and several of their new features to test out. From what we know about the frog mobs so far, they spawn in swamp biomes where they'll spend time snapping fireflies out of the air and hopping on Dripleafs. We already knew some other neat things about frogs, like how they hatch as tadpoles and grow into one of three frog varieties based on the biome they mature in. Mojang had also let on that frogs would be useful to players in some fashion, but didn't initially let on how. Today's patch notes for Bedrock 1.18.10 let on at least part of what frogs can do and it sounds both very rad and very silly. Frogs can eat small Slime enemies, turning them into Slime Balls—which are a key ingredient in existing recipes like Sticky Pistons and Leads. It turns out that frogs also have a taste for spicy enemies. They can eat tiny Magma Cubes, which then turn into Froglights. Like Glowstone Blocks and Sea Lanterns, it looks like Froglights will be a nice decorative light source. Same as the frogs themselves, they also come in three varieties based on the type of frog that creates them. Pretty neat! A couple other frog-related queries get answered in the 1.18.10 patch notes—frogs will indeed be breedable, for one. For now, Mojang says that frogs can be led and bred with Seagrass, but that this is only a placeholder food. I'd be willing to bet that when the 1.19 update launches they'll have a native swamp food they prefer instead. This update also includes a list of bug fixes along with more changes to bring Bedrock and Java in alignment. If you want to try befriending some frogs yourself, you'll find the toggles for experimental Wild Update features in the options for creating a new world or editing the settings for an existing world.Lauren started writing for PC Gamer as a freelancer in 2017 while chasing the Dark Souls fashion police and accepted her role as Associate Editor and Chief Minecraft Liker in 2021. She originally started her career in game development and is still fascinated by how games tick in the modding and speedrunning scenes. She likes long books, longer RPGs, multiplayer cryptids, and can't stop playing co-op crafting games.
