https://www.techspot.com/news/93580-samsung-introduces-galaxy-book2-series-alder-lake-powered.html With MWC Barcelona underway, it's time to learn what new products are coming to the mobile market segment. As expected, Samsung is at the event, where it announced the new Galaxy Book2 series of laptops. The series consists of four models (two convertibles) powered by Intel 12th Gen Core processors. Samsung's new Galaxy Book2 series laptops will follow some trends of its predecessors, such as the FHD AMOLED displays, thin and light designs (up to 1.55Kg/3.4lbs), and a decent variety of models. Still, new things are under their hood, including Intel 12th Gen Core i3/5/7 P-series processors, Windows 11, authentication via fingerprint on power key, and a new generation of graphics cards, including Intel Arc mobile GPUs. Available in silver, burgundy, and graphite, the Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 is a 2-in-1 laptop that comes in 13.3- and 15.6-inch variants. Inside, it sports an Intel 12th Gen Core i5/7 CPU, up to 32GB of LPDDR5 memory, and 1TB of NVMe storage. Moreover, the Galaxy Book2 Pro 15.6 will have the option to feature an undisclosed Intel Arc dedicated mobile GPU. As an Intel Evo platform, you can expect up to 21 hours of battery life, Wi-Fi 6E and BT 5.1 connectivity, an FHD 1080p webcam, and various physical interfaces, including Thunderbolt 4, a headphone/mic jack, and a microSD card reader. Additionally, both models have dual-speaker sound systems designed by AKG and support Dolby Atmos. The Secured-Core security suite, a 65W USB-C power adaptor, and S Pen support also come standard. The Galaxy Book2 Pro shares a lot with the 360, including the processor, memory (8/16/32GB LPDDR5), and storage (up to 1TB NVMe) options. Available color options only include silver and graphite, but there will be 13.3- and 15.6-inch versions like the convertible model. Connectivity-wise, the Book2 Pro is the better choice, as it offers the same options as the Book2 Pro 360, with the addition of USB 3.2 and HDMI support. The 15.6-inch variant goes even further with a nano-SIM slot and 5G capability. However, the Book2 Pro doesn't support the S Pen. Still, it will feature a sound system designed by AKG, Dolby Atmos support, and 65W USB-C charging. As the name implies, the Galaxy Book2 360 is a stripped-down version of the Pro model. It lacks a 15.6-inch screen and burgundy color option. However, it somewhat makes up for that with a more extensive CPU selection, ranging from low-end 12th Gen Celeron SKUs up to Core i7 chips. Although memory is limited to a maximum of 16GB of LPDDR4x, SSD storage can still go up to 1TB. Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity are still present, but the webcam has a 720p resolution. The Galaxy Book2 360 will also support Dolby Atmos, Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2, and 65W USB-C charging. It also features a microSD card reader and a headphone/mic 3.5mm jack.

https://www.techradar.com/news/samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-isnt-a-tiktok-machine-and-im-a-little-disappointed Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is not ready to be my TikTok creation platform. That’s right, I TikTok. Don’t look at me like that. There are lots of middle-aged people lip-synching, dancing, showing off hacks, and demonstrating oddball skills on the wildly po[CENSORED]r social media platform. My channel is not filled with dances or songs. It’s mostly a hodgepodge of conversations with myself, visual tricks, tech stuff, and a lot of me experiencing the latest trending filter. Lately, I’ve been using a lot of filters, which rely on augmented reality to transform my face into animals, movie characters, optical illusions. They’re harmless fun. While I can find filters that do work, some of the newest, coolest and maybe most sophisticated ones do not work on Samsung’s premier smartphone. This came as something of a surprise to me. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is an excellent and powerful Android 12 phone. It has a great collection of powerful cameras, including two 10MP telephotos, 108MP wide and 12MP ultrawide on the back, and a 40MP camera on the front. It’s that last camera that I rely on for TikTok work. It’s more than capable of shooting standard TikTok videos. However, every time I try to use a new, trending filter like Raindrop control (which lets you freeze raindrops by using hand motions), or SYMMETRY (which lets you see what you’d look like if both sides of your face were exactly the same – for me the answer was Voldemort), the app informs me, “This effect doesn’t work with this device.” Even simple filters like the “Your Decade,” which guesses your birth decade theoretically based on how you look (though I think it may be random), don’t work. Listen, I like to spend a portion of each evening losing myself in the TikTok stream. It’s mind-numbing, entertaining, and kind of relaxing. When I see a fun filter, I like to try it out. I don’t always post the often-embarrassing results, and my draft folder is filled with unpublished efforts. There’s real joy in consuming TikTok video on the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s high-definition 6.8-inch AMOLED, 120Hz-capable display, which only intensifies the frustration when I can’t test drive a new filter. From a technical perspective, this, at least on the surface, makes little sense. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 40MP front-facing camera is capable of some light AR work. There’s literally an AR Zone in the Camera app that lets me doodle in AR on my face, turn my whole head into an AR emoji, and do other AR-based tricks. There are, when it comes to the front camera, limitations. In the AR Doodle, it will only support face doodles. Plus, even though the phone can plop a dinosaur head emoji on my body that can follow my head's movement and some facial expressions, it’s not that precise. If I were to compare what’s possible with Apple’s TrueDepth Module on the front of its iPhone 13 line with what the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s single front-facing camera is capable of, I’d call the Samsung effort a 1.0 version. Ever since Apple introduced that depth-sensing module, its front-facing camera’s AR capabilities have grown substantially. When the iPhone 13 Pro paints my face with Mardi Gras makeup, the effect is realistic and disturbing. As I’m sure you know the camera is fully capable of supporting all of TikTok’s latest filters and effects. I’ve contacted Samsung for more details on why the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra doesn’t support all these filters and will update this post with the company’s response. Perhaps they’ll tell me it’s just a matter of a software update, but I doubt it. That lone camera can only do so much with software to understand the real-world depth and create a realistic marriage between artificial reality and my face. Advertisement Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s rear camera array includes a laser to assist with autofocus. It does that by reading the depth information of a subject and their environment. I’d have to assume that if Samsung had drilled one additional hole in the screen next to the 40MP front camera for a laser, it might also have brought that depth info to the front of the phone, and then better support all those TikTok filters. So, while you’re passing harsh judgment on my TikTok activities, maybe spare some for a brand-new, innovative phone that somehow forgets to fully support the world’s most po[CENSORED]r social media platform. As for me, I guess I’ll stick to my iPhone 13 Pro in my unending quest to become TikTok famous.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2033016/sport Liverpool won its first domestic final in a decade by beating Chelsea 11-10 on penalties to clinch the League Cup on Sunday. All 10 penalties had been scored before it was down to the goalkeepers to take their turn and Kepa Arrizabalaga missed after Liverpool counterpart Caoimhin Kelleher had netted. Kepa had been brought off the bench as a penalties specialist just as the clock hit 120 minutes at the end of extra time, replacing Edouard Mendy whose saves had kept the final locked at 0-0. The move paid off for manager Thomas Tuchel in the UEFA Super Cup in August but this time there was no trophy for Chelsea to add to the Champions League and Club World Cup titles won in the last year. Unlike Chelsea, Liverpool did allow the 23-year-old Kelleher to keep his place as goalkeeper in the cup competitions rather than inserting the first-choice Alisson Becker for the final. “In professional football there should be space for sentiment,” Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said. “He is a young boy, we ask him to do a lot, he starts playing in the competition and then we get to the final and I tell him he cannot play? “I am two things, a football manager and a human being, and the human being won this time and it is so nice that it paid off. He deserves it.” Liverpool’s last domestic cup final success was the 2012 League Cup under Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool has won the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020 under Klopp. The game opened with a pre-match show of solidarity to the people of Ukraine after the invasion by Russia, with applause around Wembley as the blue and yellow of Ukraine appeared on stadium screens. “Some of the videos and clips you see are frightening but hopefully it will end soon and we can all have peace,” said Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. “We stand together for Ukraine because what is happening is awful.” The war has put a sharp spotlight on Chelsea’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich, whose ongoing ownership of the west London club has been criticized by British politicians. PREMIER LEAGUE GAME In the day’s only Premier League game, Tomas Soucek boosted West Ham’s push for a Champions League spot by clinching a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton. West Ham had slipped down to sixth in the league before the game, having taken just five points from its previous five matches, but bounced back against Bruno Lage’s side to move above Arsenal into fifth place. Manchester United is only two points ahead in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot. Wolves is five points behind West Ham in eighth place.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2033061/entertainment The film cast deaf actors Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur as parents SAG awards are closely watched because actors form the largest voting group which organizes the Oscars LOS ANGELES: “CODA,” a coming-of-age drama about the only hearing member of a deaf family, won the Screen Actors Guild’s top film award, raising its chances of success at next month’s Oscars ceremony. The movie, which Apple TV+ acquired at the Sundance Film Festival for $25 million, follows the story of a small-town girl who pursues her dream of becoming a singer. The film cast deaf actors Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur as parents of the young performer, played by Emilia Jones. “We deaf actors have come a long way,” said Matlin, speaking through an interpreter. The SAG awards, chosen by members of the SAG-AFTRA acting union, are closely watched because actors form the largest voting group in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars. Winning the top SAG honor often, but not always, precedes a best picture win. This year’s Oscar winners will be announced on March 27. The war in Ukraine did not go unnoticed, with actor Leslie Odom Jr. acknowledging the violence at the onset of the ceremony, sending “our thoughts, prayers and hopes for impending peace.” It was a recurring theme throughout the night. “CODA,” an acronym for Child of Deaf Adult, landed the top SAG award — for a cast in a motion picture — over drama “Belfast,” a Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical tale about the Northern Ireland conflict, climate change allegory “Don’t Look Up;” “King Richard” about the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams; and “House of Gucci,” the story of the family behind the famous fashion house. “The Power of the Dog,” which led Oscar nominations with 12 nods, was not nominated by SAG for best cast. The gothic Western did not win on Sunday. Jessica Chastain won best movie actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Will Smith was named best movie actor for “King Richard,” the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ father. Among the night’s television honors, the fish out of water series about an American football coach hired to coach a British soccer team, “Ted Lasso,” won for best comedy, and the cast of HBO’s tale of money, power and politics, “Succession” won for outstanding ensemble performance in a drama series. “Succession’s” Brian Cox used his acceptance speech to address the war, lauding the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a former comic, and offering support for Russian actors, who “under pains of high treason” cannot speak out. Helen Mirren was honored with a lifetime achievement award. “I join our tribe of rogues and vagabonds a long time ago,” said Mirren. “And it is you, you actors, that I want to thank.”

https://www.pcgamer.com/nobuo-uematsu-explains-the-vocals-added-to-final-fantasy-6-pixel-remasters-opera-scene/ The final Final Fantasy to receive the pixel remaster treatment, Final Fantasy 6 was released on February 23. Many things remain as they were in the original game, including the fact you can suplex a train (which wasn't a sure thing, as a tweet from two weeks before launch showed a version in which the Phantom Train didn't flip over). One thing that has changed is the famous opera scene, which received a visual overhaul, with the 2D characters in front of 3D backgrounds à la Octopath Traveler, and vocals in seven languages. In a recent promotional video (thanks to RPGSite for the translation), original composer Nobuo Uematsu explains that he suggested the idea of adding vocals to Square Enix "half-jokingly", not expecting it to actually happen. "I thought it would be impossible or difficult," he said. On hearing this suggestion, the remaster's producer then went to Yoshinori Kitase, the original's co-director, to ask what to do. As Kitase explained in the video, "So I replied 'You should listen and do everything that Uematsu said.' I was the key figure behind the scenes!" Celes, the party member who sings in the scene, is an ex-military general who gets caught up in the performance rather than an opera singer. A vocalist was chosen with that in mind, Uematsu said, "someone whose vocals didn't seem like an opera singer, but more like a musical singer." Uematsu also explained that the lyrics were written by Kitase, who wrote them as "a love letter for the woman he was dating. But he wasn't lying, he did end up marrying her and they had a baby." Uematsu found out that Square Enix had followed through on his suggestion when the publisher sent him versions of the audio in seven different languages. "No matter what language it was," he said, "even when I couldn't understand [the language], I still couldn't help getting overflowed with tears." Jody's first computer was a Commodore 64, so he remembers having to use a code wheel to play Pool of Radiance. A former music journalist who interviewed everyone from Giorgio Moroder to Trent Reznor, Jody also co-hosted Australia's first radio show about videogames, Zed Games. He's written for Rock Paper Shotgun, The Big Issue, GamesRadar, Zam, Glixel, and Playboy.com, whose cheques with the bunny logo made for fun conversations at the bank. Jody's first article for PC Gamer was published in 2015, he edited PC Gamer Indie from 2017 to 2018, and actually did play every Warhammer videogame.

https://www.pcgamer.com/gigabyte-500-and-400-series-am4-motherboard-bios-add-support-for-the-amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d-cpu/ The launch of AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D draws closer. In preparation for the launch, Gigabyte has released a new BIOS for its 500 & 400 series AM4 motherboards. According to a tweet from @KOMACHI_ENSAKA, the new BIOS includes AMD’s AGESA ComboV2 PI 1.2.0.6B microcode and covers Gigabyte’s X570, B550, A520, X470 and B450 product families. Though it’s not explicitly stated, the BIOS changelog for a couple of the models we looked at includes support for an 'Upcoming New CPU'. Which is almost certainly the 5800X3D. Other motherboard manufacturers are certain to follow with their own BIOS releases. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is an exciting CPU as it’s the first to include an extra 64MB of vertically stacked cache. This will give it a total of 96MB of L3 cache. It will include 8 cores and 16 threads. Its base clock will be set at 3.4GHz with a boost clock of 4.5GHz. This is lower than the 4.7GHz of the regular Ryzen 7 5800X. The TDP remains the same at 105W. AMD lowered the clocks a little in order to fit within the 105W TDP envelope, but this means that if you have good cooling and a motherboard with a decent VRM, there’s every chance that the 5800X3D could have good overclocking headroom. AMD claims the 5800X3D can deliver up to 15% higher gaming performance than the base 5800X. Though that is probably going to be limited to games that are sensitive to a large and low latency cache. It may also end up as a low volume CPU. Will the lower clock speed hurt it significantly? Or will the extra cache be enough to offset it across all kinds of workloads? We’ll have to wait and see how it performs if or when we get it installed into our test bench sometime in the spring. https://www.techradar.com/news/google-chrome-is-removing-its-data-saving-mode-on-android-lets-celebrate When version 100 of Google's Chrome browser is available to download, it will be without the Lite mode that enables less mobile data to be used on Android devices when browsing the web, and I couldn't be happier. In a blog post, the company explained that it doesn't see the need for a feature to minimize data used in its web browser, when the amount of cellular data has increased, while the cost has stayed the same. The feature arrived back in 2014 as a way to load webpages with less data being used, which could be useful for those on a small data plan for their smartphone. Having sold phones and data plans to customers in a previous career, the end of this feature is only good news for me, but mainly for the customer who reads their content from Chrome on a mobile device every day. According to Google's Roadmap status page for Chrome, version 100 will arrive on March 29, with a beta arriving around March 3. This will apply to all versions of Chrome - from its mobile versions to the desktop on PC, Mac and Chromebook. But with the Data Saver feature only on Android versions, it's not going to be something that's missed by many users, especially as there's data saving features built into Android 12 for all apps anyway, by going to Settings > Cellular Data. Having worked at a phone store for years before switching careers to be a writer, helping customers with their phones and the data they would use, would be a common task for me. Some would come in, asking me why they had received a text stating they were at 80% of their monthly data usage. Looking at how much data apps would be used, a web browser would usually reign supreme at the top of this list. But this was in a time where 2GB of data a month would be normal to see, not the 150GB a month or unlimited plans we all see advertised. But when a 'lite' mode would appear on a browser or a social media app like Facebook, it would degrade the experience. I remember pixelated images loading instead, or certain content removed so the text would be all over the place. However, it's finally time to see the back of these features - they only hinder, not help the experience if you're trying to search for something or read the latest news in Chrome on your Samsung S22. As Google Chrome hits a century of a version number, it's great to see this disappear, and instead, enrich the content that's available for your interests across the spectrum of the web. However, Firefox is also approaching version 100, so there's a chance that we may see a landmark feature arrive from Mozilla as well. March is looking to be an eventful time for web browsers on many devices, and I'm here for it. Daryl had been freelancing for 3 years before joining TechRadar, now reporting on everything software-related. In his spare time he's written a book, 'The Making of Tomb Raider', alongside podcasting and usually found playing games old and new on his PC and MacBook Pro. If you have a story about an updated app or one that's about to launch, drop him a line.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2032231/sport The second-seeded Russian won the singles and doubles titles in Marseille last Sunday Rublev’s plea for peace in Ukraine after his win the previous night went viral across news stations worldwide An emotional Andrey Rublev said he will sleep for two days after securing his third trophy in seven days by ending the dream run of Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the Dubai final on Saturday. The second-seeded Russian won the singles and doubles titles in Marseille last Sunday before flying to the Emirates and clawing his way to a 10th career singles crown, and a fifth at the ATP 500 level. “For sure for the next two days I will sleep, I won’t leave my bed,” said Rublev, whose plea for peace in Ukraine after his win the previous night went viral across news stations worldwide. “Finally I can rest for maybe one week now. I feel super happy, even though maybe I’m tired. “I think I was lucky today that Jiri also was super tired. He had really tough matches. He beat top players starting from the first round, so I was super lucky that he couldn’t perform the way he can. “I was lucky today and that’s why I’m happy to be the champion, I didn’t expect this. It’s an amazing feeling.” Rublev entered the Dubai final having contested 17 matches — across singles and doubles — in three weeks, 12 of which were three-setters. The world number seven has been running on fumes all week and had to rally back from a set down in three of his five matches. World number 123 Vesely is the lowest-ranked finalist in the Dubai tournament’s 30-year history. The 28-year-old left-hander made it through the qualifying rounds before knocking out ex-US Open champion Marin Cilic, eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, world number one Novak Djokovic, and sixth seed Denis Shapovalov en route to the biggest final of his career. His performance against Rublev on Saturday however was far from what he was able to showcase earlier in the week, as he double-faulted eight times and struggled to win points on his second serve. Rublev fired 30 winners, including 13 aces on his way to an 80-minute triumph. Some clever returning from Rublev helped him carve a 4-1 lead and that sole break was all he needed to scoop the opening set in 29 minutes. The 24-year-old started the second set with a break and looked in control until the sixth game where Vesely managed to stall his momentum. A bad call from chair umpire Carlos Bernardes, who missed an obvious let on a Rublev serve, did not go down well with the Russian, who went on a rant before receiving a code violation. Vesely capitalized on his opponent’s loss of focus and broke back to level the set at 3-3 but the Czech dropped serve again after an eight-minute seventh game. Back in the driver’s seat, Rublev closed out the victory comfortably, and sank to his knees after match point, realizing his marathon February was finally over. Rublev is now 37-4 at ATP 500 tournaments since the tour resumed in August 2020 following a five-month suspension.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2031111/lifestyle Palestinian model and artist Fai Khadra jetted to Dubai this week to celebrate the launch of US label Ralph Lauren’s Club Eau de Parfum, in which he stars. Khadra appeared in the campaign video, set in a swanky nightclub of the same name as the fragrance, alongside Palestinian-Dutch model Gigi Hadid, model, and musician Lucky Blue Smith, and artist and actor Luka Sabbat. In an interview with Arab News, Khadra said he enjoyed filming the campaign, his first post-pandemic. “Ralph Lauren is such an iconic American heritage brand, and their concept for this fragrance was really to bring together a community that felt authentic to Ralph’s club, and that felt like a real club of a group of friends,” he said. “I think they did that so beautifully because all the cast members who were in the campaign are friends in real life. We hang out and we see each other all the time.” Besides the friendly atmosphere on set, Khadra said that one of his favorite memories was spending time with Hadid. “Gigi had just had her baby and I didn’t get a chance to meet her. So I got a chance to, you know, at least see photos of the baby and hear about how she’s doing. It was just great to be all together again,” he explained. Khadra has had a lot on his plate, recently partnering with heritage eyewear brand Oliver Peoples on a capsule collection of handcrafted sunglasses. “They are the perfect everyday shape. I designed them to be ‘every day,’ ‘looks great on everyone and can just seamlessly fit into your lifestyle,” he said. Turning back to his art, Khadra also recently displayed a sculpture at a show called “Vessels” in Los Angeles. “It was an interesting idea. A friend of mine, Alex — who curates these shows — comes up with a concept for each show. The last one he did was chairs,” he said. “My idea was to carve a vessel out of the ground, which I thought was an interesting kind of take on the concept of his show.” Some of Khadra’s favorite artists that he is inspired by are Bruce Nauman, Richard Prince, and Andy Warhol. He spent the lockdown period caused by COVID-19 in Los Angeles. “I was with my family for most of the time. We honestly cooked a lot. I know it was a very difficult time for everybody including myself, but I think something positive that came out of it was being able to spend time with loved ones and kind of take a break from a very tricky life that we all live.” Besides modeling, sculptures, DJ’ing, and set design, Khadra is interested in exploring the tech world. “I’ve been interested in different tech companies and this new NFT (non-fungible token) space, and how art and technology are coming in together. I think that is going to be the future,” he said. “I’m very interested in learning more about the different tech spaces and how we can optimize the experience and create an experience that maybe you can’t achieve in the physical world.”

https://www.techspot.com/news/93560-gpu-hash-rate-unlocker-malware.html Earlier this week, a program was making the rounds that supposedly helped crypto miners get around the limitations of Nvidia LHR graphics cards. It sounded unsafe, to begin with, but now it looks like the whole thing was a malware scam. When Wccftech investigated the Nvidia RTX Light Hash Rate (LHR) BIOS v2 unlocker this week, it turned out to be filled with malware. Videocardz later noted that the malware connects to a remote server and then Tom's Hardware reported that the unlocker doesn't uncap the hash rate, but instead infects PowerShell. Nvidia started shipping new RTX 30 series Ampere graphics cards with LHR caps last year, which limited their capacity to mine Ethereum in the hopes of reducing their attractiveness to miners and easing up the supply for gamers -- the latter part never came to fruition. Earlier this week, Github user "Sergey" advertised the unlocker as a tool to sidestep the LHR by modifying the graphics card BIOS, something all manufacturers frown upon for obvious reasons. On top of that, the unlocker only worked properly with a special driver, which users had to grab from private servers. Since the malware discovery, the program's Github page has disappeared. The program was advertised as compatible with any Ampere card, including RTX 30 series gaming GPUs and Nvidia RTX workstation cards. Promises of Nvidia LHR turned out too good to be true as GPU prices remained massively inflated throughout 2021. However, prices have started to decline this year, signaling a change in the winds for Ethereum mining.

https://www.techradar.com/news/intel-might-be-about-to-make-a-major-linux-move Intel has quietly acquired a German software developer to bring fresh life to a key, decades-old Linux kernel project. In a blog post, vice president and general manager of system software engineering at Intel's Software and Advanced Technology Group, Mark Skarpness revealed that the company had acquired the German firm Linutronix which provides services for Linux-powered industrial systems and also specializes in real-time Linux applications. While neither Intel nor Linutronix disclosed the financial terms of the deal, the acquisition is a sign that the chip giant wants to further commit to an incredibly important yet often overlooked Linux kernel project. According to Intel, Linutronix is the “architect of PREEMPT_RT (Real-Time)” and this patch set can be used to make low-latency communication possible between controllers, sensors, robots, tooling, and other equipment in real-time industrial applications running on Linux. When enabled, PREEMPT_RT changes the way the Linux kernel handles interrupts and locks to allow threads to get additional time on a CPU core with little latency. As a result, developers can use it to configure the Linux kernel for real-time use-cases without having to worry about out-of-tree patches, new kernel versions, or other disruptions resulting from new point releases. Despite its usefulness in Linux-powered industrial systems, like other open-source software projects, PREEMPT_RT is maintained by a small group of core developers. Up until now, the project has lacked enough contributors and funding to be integrated with the main Linux kernel. Still, though, companies have been building products that use this patch and the number doing so will likely increase with Intel's backing. Sharpness provided further details on Intel's plans for Linutronix going forward in his blog post announcing the acquisition, saying: “By acquiring Linutronix, we are deepening our long-standing relationship with a highly respected team of globally recognized Linux experts, adding to the remarkable breadth and depth of Intel’s hardware and software talent. Lantronix will continue to operate as an independent business within our software division, led by Egger and Gleixner.” In a statement to The Register, Skarpness confirmed that Intel intends to continue to support the PREEMPT_RT project as the company believes it is a “critical piece of technology that's going to be used in a lot of places”. We'll likely hear more regarding Linutronix and Intel's plans for PREEMPT_RT once the acquisition is complete.
