https://www.pcgamer.com/stardew-valley-mod-adds-viral-kitty-stars-jean-and-jorts-as-npcs/ Jean and Jorts are a pair of cats you may have heard of. They came to fame by way of an Am I The Asshole thread on Reddit about a minor workplace beef over two cats, one smart and one, well, not, that among other things involved one of the parties applying margarine to the dumb cat—Jorts—as a teaching aid. The very funny, oddly uplifting story quickly went viral: Jean and Jorts now have their own Twitter account with more than 144,000 followers, and recently appeared on CNN. They are also now unofficial NPCs in Stardew Valley, courtesy of the Jorts and Jean the Helper Cats mod. "They are giftable, friendable, have a plethora of things to say, cross-compatible with many other custom NPCs, and feature two events tied to the Reddit AITA post that started it all," the NexusMods description says. "If you follow JortsTheCat on Twitter, you'll also probably see some familiar lines too." The cats can be added to an in-progress game at any point, but won't start roaming around until after the Joja landslide is cleared out. Both Jean and Jorts are very pro-union and hate Joja products, although Jean is apparently the brains behind that stance, while Jorts is mostly "stuck in a trashcan." They currently have two in-game events and a schedule that sees them roaming far and wide, although they stay inside at the Adventurer's Guild on rainy days, and yes, they speak: They "have a plethora of things to say," according to the listing. As mods go, this one seems just about perfect: Thematically on-point, timely, but not so completely hung on a single gag that it's going to wear out its welcome quickly. And the mod makers have more planned for the future, including additional events, visits to the resort, cross-compatibility with a larger number of other mods, and more cross-mod dialog and gift tastes. Donation Points, a system that enables mod makers to monetize their work on NexusMods, is enabled for Jorts and Jean in order to raise funds for the United Farm Workers non-profit. "They are a union-like organization fighting for rights for farm workers, who are often excluded from basic protections, such as being guaranteed overtime pay," Tiakall said. "This is a cause Jorts and his human are passionate about and I think it's what he'd do." https://www.techspot.com/news/93527-intel-launches-12th-gen-alder-lake-p-series.html Intel’s Alder Lake bombing run continues with the launch of 12th generation P-series and U-series CPUs. Like their more powerful siblings, they combine performance and efficiency cores managed by Intel’s Thread Director technology. Intel Xe integrated graphics, support for PCIe 4.0 and Thunderbolt 4, and more round out the list of features. The first wave of Intel's 12th generation Alder Lake CPUs for mid-range and high-end laptops arrived with a splash. Our own Tim Schiesser found Team Blue's latest H-series CPUs to be an impressive upgrade over previous generations. The Core i7-12700H, in particular, proved faster than AMD's excellent Ryzen 7 5800H processor in a variety of tasks. Today, Intel launched the second wave of Alder Lake mobile processors designed for thin and light laptops. Just like the rest of the 12th generation lineup, Alder Lake P-series and U-series CPUs are hybrid designs built on an Intel 7 process node that combines performance cores (P-cores) and efficiency cores (E-cores) in a way that resembles Arm's big.LITTLE architecture. This configuration provides higher core counts than in previous generation (Tiger Lake) CPUs, which affords some significant performance gains and better battery life in scenarios that require them. Intel says you'll get up to 70 percent better multi-threaded performance when compared to Tiger Lake and AMD's Ryzen 5800U CPU, as well as Apple's M1 and M1 Pro chipsets—but not the M1 Max. The low-power U-series are split into two sub-families rated at 15 watts and 9 watts, respectively. They only have two performance cores (or one in the case of Pentium and Celeron versions) and between four and eight efficiency cores. Alder Lake P-series processors are rated at 28 watts and can be configured by OEMs for a maximum turbo power of 64 watts. These are essentially lower-clocked versions of Alder Lake-H CPUs with eight efficiency cores and between two and six performance cores. As you'd expect, all the new chips come with Intel’s integrated Xe graphics engine with anywhere between 48 to 96 execution units, depending on the model. There's also support for PCIe 4.0 solid-state storage, Thunderbolt 4, and Wi-Fi 6E. The Evo branding means the processors will be integrated into devices with 1080p webcams and fast charging, among other things. Come holiday 2022, "select" Evo laptops will offer a multi-device technology that will allow users to seamlessly move between them and other devices, presumably Android laptops and smartphones. ntel probably doesn't expect OEMs to pair these CPUs with discrete graphics solutions—including its own Arc Alchemist GPUs—but then again, there's only so much thermal headroom in a laptop that's supposed to be under 15 mm thick. Still, Intel claims the top-of-the-line Core i7-1280P with its integrated Xe graphics engine should be plenty capable for casual gaming on the go. The company says you can expect to achieve around 82 frames per second in GTA V and 65 frames per second in The Riftbreaker at 1080p when using medium-quality settings. Less demanding titles like Dota 2 and Rocket League can efficiently run at a locked 60 frames per second using high settings, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. In related news, Acer announced the first ultraportable laptops to sport a 12th generation Alder Lake-P CPU—the Swift 5 and the Swift 3. These devices have 16:10 displays, up to 16 gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 2 terabytes of PCIe 4.0 storage, and, most notably, USB-A and HDMI 2.1 ports. Pricing starts at $849.99 for the Acer Swift 3 and $1,499 for the Swift 5. They'll first be available in Europe starting next month and will gradually roll out to more regions until June.

https://www.techradar.com/news/google-chrome-is-killing-off-its-android-lite-mode As the cost of cellular data plans has decreased significantly in recent years, Google has revealed its plans to discontinue its Lite Mode feature in Google Chrome on Android. First released back in 2014 under the name “Data Saver”, the feature was later rebranded as “Lite Mode” in 2019 and was designed to help those with slow or limited data connections. When enabled on an Android smartphone, Lite Mode would send some of a user's web traffic through Google's own servers before it was downloaded on their device. If pages loaded slowly, the search giant's servers would simplify them so that fewer data would be downloaded to a user's device. While Lite Mode helped those with less mobile data avoid being hit with heavy data overage charges, the feature didn't work with private browsing enabled and it also prevented users from accessing pages on a local network such as an internal company site. In a new support document, Google has revealed its plans to sunset Chrome Lite Mode with the release of Google Chrome 100 in March of this year. The feature will be turned off for those still using it on March 29 as the search giant has observed a decrease in the cost for mobile data in a number of countries in recent years. At the same time, Google has also made improvements to Chrome to “further minimize data usage and improve web page loading”. Although Lite Mode is being discontinued, the company remains committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile going forward. If you still want to limit the amount of data your Android smartphone uses, you can try restricting background data for individual apps in settings, limit how often apps sync and what they update, use some of your apps offline and try using Pocket or a similar service to download and save web pages to read later when connected to Wi-Fi.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2030106/lifestyle The Oscars next month will pre-tape the announcements of eight winners in an attempt to make the televised ceremony “tighter and more electric,” organizers said Tuesday. The decision, made to “prioritize the television audience,” will free up more time for musical performances, comedy and tributes, Academy president David Rubin said in an email to nominees and members. Television ratings for the Oscars have dramatically declined in recent years. Last year’s edition was watched by just over 10 million viewers — a 56 percent decline from 2020, which was already a record low. Eight awards “will initially be presented in the Dolby Theatre in the hour before the live broadcast begins,” and edited highlights will be “folded seamlessly into the live televised show,” the email seen by AFP says. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has mulled reducing the number of categories in the live broadcast before, and recently merged its “sound mixing” and “sound editing” awards into a single Oscar. But previous attempts were unpo[CENSORED]r, particularly among members working in craft categories — from film editing to makeup and hairstyling — who fear missing out on what is often a career-highlight moment. Those categories will now be pre-taped, along with awards for original score, sound, production design, documentary shorts, animated shorts and live-action shorts. Rubin’s email emphasizes that “every awarded filmmaker and artist in every category will still have the celebratory ‘Oscar moment’ they deserve on the stage of the Dolby, facing an enrapt audience.” The streamlining measure will leave “more time and opportunity for audience entertainment and engagement through comedy, musical numbers, film clip packages and movie tributes,” he said. “For the audience at home, the show’s flow does not change, though it will become tighter and more electric with this new cadence.” One Academy member, who asked not to be named, told AFP that they “understand” the decision announced by Rubin, due to the proviso that all winners’ speeches will still be featured on the broadcast. “Considering the recent ratings decline of the Oscars telecast, the show must evolve with having the best interest of the future of the show, as well as the Academy itself, in mind,” said the member. It is the Academy’s latest move to boost interest and viewership in its flagship event. The 94th Academy Awards telecast will also include a new “fan favorite” prize for the year’s most po[CENSORED]r film, as voted for by Twitter users. Several of last year’s crowd-pleasing blockbusters including “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “No Time To Die” had failed to earn Oscar nominations in major categories, including best picture. After going three years without a host, the Oscars on March 27 will be helmed by three doyennes of comedy, Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall.

https://www.techspot.com/news/93497-asustor-nas-reportedly-under-ransomware-attack-owners-asked.html Asustor NAS owners are being warned about a nasty ransomware, DeadBolt, that's attacking cloud-connected/online NAS and asking for 0.03 BTC to decrypt users’ content. If you’re running an Asustor device, you’ll want to disable the EZ Connect utility suspected of being vulnerable to the exploit and physically disconnect your NAS from the internet. The DeadBolt ransomware, which has previously taken QNAP drives hostage, is now after Asustor devices and is encrypting files on internet-connected instances. NAS Compares reports how multiple owners have been affected by DeadBolt while the ransomware’s attack vector remains unknown. The Asustor community forum is also po[CENSORED]ted with similar experiences, with users reporting high disk activity triggered by DeadBolt encrypting their files. Reddit user u/kabe0, who also fell victim to this attack, shared how other owners can detect the presence of this ransomware by logging into their NAS and searching for all files with the .deadbolt extension by typing this command: Compromised NAS drives will also fail to function properly as DeadBolt is targeting both system and personal files. For affected users, the recommended course of action is to salvage unencrypted content and assess damage by plugging their NAS into another Linux instance and taking an external backup. Unaffected owners, meanwhile, have been asked to disable Asustor’s EZ Connect remote access software, prevent unauthorized access by disabling SSH, turn off auto updates and configure their firewall to only allow LAN communication and block all incoming traffic from outside. The latest attack serves as yet another reminder of the importance of offline backups and the risk that comes with the convenience of having your personal storage remotely accessible. Although not a victim of ransomware, some internet-connected WD drives caused similar headaches last year due to malicious software causing them to wipe all data and factory reset.

https://www.techradar.com/news/microsoft-edge-is-throwing-its-weight-behind-web-apps Microsoft is looking into a method of making it easier to install progressive web apps (PWAs) across multiple devices using its browser. The company is testing a way of using Microsoft Edge to simplify the process of installing PWAs on seperate devices. The move will mean that once you have installed a PWA on one device, you will then see an option to install it on other devices with a single click. The addition could be great news for businesses looking to install and allow employees run workplace apps across multiple devices, for example a business laptop used for remote working, or a mobile or tablet device when on the move. The new feature, spotted by Leo Varela and shared to Reddit, will live within the Apps menu on Microsoft Edge. PWAs, which are essentially web pages that behave and offer much of the same functionality as native apps, can not only dynamically shift to fit mobile or desktop screens, but are also a lot lighter, faster, and have a lower impact on battery life. Once a PWA has been installed on one device, Varela noted, it will now appear in a list of available apps for other devices when you are connected to the internet on Microsoft Edge. These apps can be installed on the new device with just a click, greatly streamlining the setup process. The feature appears to be available to Edge Canary users for now, meaning a wider rollout could be on the cards for sometime in the next few weeks. The news follows a similar move by the great rival to Microsoft Edge, as Google Chrome announced it would be working on a new file handling API that will enable Chrome PWAs to work with files in the host operating system's file system like a native app in May 2021. https://www.pcgamer.com/total-war-warhammer-3s-first-hotfix-should-arrive-this-week/ Total War: Warhammer 3 released last week to a generally positive reception, though there have been some quibbles over its performance and stability. (The gods of Chaos really don't like when players alt-tab, it seems.) As Creative Assembly announced today, a series of hotfixes for various issues are on the way and the first is scheduled for this week, though with the caps-heavy caveat, "NOTE THAT THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE based on NUMEROUS factors—some of which are out of our control". The current plan is for this initial hotfix to deal with problems players running DirectX 12 have had, framerate issues connected to Intel CPUs, and a problem with multiplayer lobbies, which refresh so quickly it's difficult to actually select one before the list refreshes again. Performance issues are a high priority for the run of hotfixes Creative Assembly has planned, as "Beyond the crashes and other critical issues we're working to solve, we very much understand—as gamers ourselves—that the game's performance is a cornerstone of your ability to enjoy it."Rather than wait to put together a large patch that solves numerous problems, the plan is to "take a surgical approach to address them: deploying smaller hotfixes at a faster rate rather than waiting to compile fixes into a large update that smashes multiple issues at once." One reason for that is to ensure fixes are fully tested and don't cause further stability issues before they're bundled together, and also because "The more fixes in a build, the more risk that it can cause problems with other elements in the game or with the platforms where the game is released." Later updates will apparently make more significant changes, once this run of smaller hotfixes are out of the way. "When we have solid dates for the current, next, and next-next hotfixes, we'll let you know so you can look forward to them", Creative Assembly says. In the meantime, running Warhammer 3 in windowed mode has reduced the number of crashes for me, though I had to quit out then restart after changing that option to make the game properly line up with my actual screen. https://www.arabnews.com/node/2029481/lifestyle Greed is often the cause of humanity’s slide into disaster. It can be for territorial gains or higher profits and comes with immense human suffering, death and destruction. Rory Kennedy’s latest foray into documentaries is “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing.” Now streaming on Netflix, the film is a masterly work on how corporate greed led to hundreds of airline passengers dying in two separate crashes. Kennedy and writers Mark Bailey and Kevin McAlester have experience in producing damning exposes. In 2007, she and her husband Bailey came out with the Emmy-winning “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib,” and in 2014 all three created the Oscar nominee “Last Days in Vietnam.” The film about Boeing, despite all the nitty-gritty details, engages us. We are made aware of corporate avarice at a macro level and how the insatiable thirst to be one up in the world market pushed the American aircraft manufacturer to blink at safety. It was insecure, and terribly so when France’s Airbus began producing planes that were far more fuel efficient than what came out of the Boeing factories. With the price of “liquid gold” going through the roof, the cost of operating an airline became a focal point in boardroom discussions. Boeing then brought out its fuel-efficient 737 Max with the new Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System that helped stabilize aircraft in certain conditions. But pilots needed to be trained in this system with the help of a simulator. The training required two weeks, and this meant money that Boeing had to spend on pilots. It was loath to do this in a climate where balance sheets were of paramount importance. Boeing then went on an aggressive publicity campaign to promote its 737 Max — until a point came when travelers felt so confident that they said: “If it ain’t Boeing I ain’t going.” Soon, Boeing was back in the race with its fuel-efficient jet. The company sold hundreds of 737 Max aircrafts, and buyers did not realize that they were in for a shock. This all came to an ugly head on Oct. 29. 2018 when Indonesia’s Lion Air flight crashed shortly after taking off from Jakarta. All 189 people on board, including Captain Bhavye Suneja, died. There are moving accounts of her husband, an ace pilot, by Garima Sethi. She talks to the camera in a composed manner, a highlight of the documentary, which avoids dramatizing the events, instead relying on facts presented with great accuracy. This makes it a compelling watch, especially with Kennedy ensuring that her movie of 89 minutes does not seem like a dull factsheet. Five months after the Lion Air disaster (after which Sethi had to live with not only the tragedy of her husband’s death but also accusations by Boeing that it was caused by pilot error), an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing Max jet crashed soon after takeoff from Adis Ababa airport. All 157 passengers and crew perished. There are heartbreaking interviews with the families of the dead, including Michael Stumo, whose 24-year-old daughter Samya Rose died in the Ethiopian Airlines crash, and his narration is an agonized crusade for justice. There were others who also lent their strong support, and damned the assertion by Boeing Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburo that the crashes resulted from pilot error. The moviemakers call on a wide range of accusers, who were outraged at Boeing’s disregard for human lives. They included Captain “Sully” Sullenberger and politicians such as US Representative Peter DeFazio, who led a congressional investigation into the Boeing 737 MAX disasters. The documentary also highlights other heroes, such as The Wall Street Journal journalist, Andy Pasztor, who wrote several hard-hitting pieces outlining how Boeing was responsible for the tragedies. “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing” is a wonderfully laid out piece of investigation that underlines “corporate malfeasance” and concludes that ultimately the angry whistles had to be heard by a company whose toxic culture had killed hundreds.

https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-76-will-be-invaded-by-aliens-this-spring/ Bethesda has teased its plans for Fallout 76 in 2022, which will begin this spring with an alien invasion and end the following winter with "The Fizziest Show on Earth." Aliens are nothing new in Fallout: Evidence of their existence, ranging from strange skeletons to powerful weaponry and crashed ships, have been present in the series since the original game. They'll soon be taking a more active role in in the post-nuclear future in Invaders From Beyond, coming this spring with public events and random encounters in which you'll do battle against an extraterrestrial threat to Appalachia. The spring update will also add the ability to earn Score, the points used to rank up and unlock rewards, and kick off Fallout 76 Season 8, entitled A Better Life Underground. Summer will see the addition of more public events including arena fights against mechanical menaces. Another new season will kick off in the summer, and there will be scoreboard progression updates for Fallout 1st subscribers. The fall update will feature the addition of Expeditions: The Pitt, a trip to the ruined city of Pittsburgh, which will include new missions, NPCs, enemies, and rewards. The Pitt itself isn't exactly a new location, though: The Pitt was originally released in 2009 as Fallout 3 DLC. And then in the winter, it's time for the promised Fizziest Show on Earth: A traveling roadshow called Nuka World on Tour, with new public events and a new region boss. The fall and winter updates will also feature new Fallout 76 seasons. The announcement is light on detail, but another year of active development is good news for Fallout 76 fans. Launch dates haven't been announced yet, but you can get a closer look at evil alien menace coming the spring update at bethesda.net. https://www.techradar.com/news/your-whatsapp-voice-calls-are-getting-a-needed-overhaul-for-ios-and-android WhatsApp is testing a new look for being in a call, both on iOS and Android, which shows who's speaking in a group call with waveforms, alongside a more modern design. The company has been working on improvements across the app for the last year, with multi-device support, a desktop app for Windows 11, and more to better rival other messaging apps. But calling in WhatsApp has been relegated to the standard user interface of what iOS and Android offer to third-party apps with call features. However, version 22.5.0.70, currently available to beta testers, the new look for calling in the app is going to benefit group calls more than those that are one-to-one. For years, the interface when you're in a call on iOS and Android has barely seen any improvement since their first versions. While iOS 14 brought a compact view for when you would be in a call, the full-screen view has been relatively unchanged. More users are preferring to choose to call over other apps, from WhatsApp to Skype, especially with group calls, which is why an update to the interface for WhatsApp is welcome. Here, you've got an elegant design that shows who's speaking thanks to the audio waveforms for when someone speaks, alongside three options that's available to you at all times if you want to go on mute, end the call, or go on loudspeaker. It's a modern design that only goes to show how much of an update the call screen in iOS and Android needs, especially for group calls. https://www.techspot.com/news/93490-nvidia-reportedly-spent-10-billion-chunk-tsmc-5nm.html Securing enough manufacturing capacity is going to be critical to the success of Nvidia’s RTX 4000 GPUs, which are expected to land as soon as this summer. The RTX 3000 series were regarded by gamers as paper launches, but the company is said to have paid through the nose so that wouldn’t be the case for its upcoming GPUs. Back in November 2021, the rumor mill was abuzz with hints that Nvidia was planning to use TSMC’s 5nm process node for its upcoming GeForce RTX 4000 series (Ada Lovelace) GPUs. These are widely expected to be significantly faster and more power-hungry when compared to the current Ampere lineup, but a much bigger issue for the Jensen Huang-powered company is securing enough manufacturing capacity. According to a report from Hardware Times, Nvidia is prepared to pay dearly for the ability to meet growing demand for increasingly powerful graphics cards. Specifically, it may be offering up to $10 billion to TSMC for a significant chunk of its 5nm manufacturing capacity. Other companies tapping TSMC’s N5 process node are Bitmain, AMD, and Apple. Nvidia previously used Samsung’s 8nm process node to make Ampere GPUs, which are notorious for being power hungry. The company may have also dealt with relatively poor production yields when it comes to its RTX 3000 series GPUs, so moving to a smaller process node could help in that regard. However, TSMC’s 5nm wafers are expected to cost quite a bit more, which could translate into more expensive graphics cards. With Intel’s Arc (Alchemist) GPUs on the horizon, it makes perfect sense for Nvidia to ensure availability issues won’t plague the launch of its upcoming RTX 4000 series GPUs. The tech supply chain is on the road to recovery, but most industry leaders believe the ongoing shortage of chips and passive components will persist until 2023. When it comes to graphics cards, Nvidia and AIB partners are more optimistic, but we’ll have to wait and see.

https://www.arabnews.com/node/2026651/lifestyle One of the first to embrace 100 percent natural, non-toxic beauty, Tata Harper’s eponymous skincare line has revolutionized clean beauty, gaining cult status for its whittled-down ingredients that are biodegradable and toxin-free. Her skincare range is sustainably made from start to finish on her Vermont farm, and the Colombia-born entrepreneur’s farm-to-face products are testament to the fact that you can both be a conscious consumer and passionate about your beauty routine. “I didn’t ever believe in beauty minimalism,” Harper told Arab News. “I am the exact opposite. More is more when it comes to beauty. Life is stressful and for me, my beauty ritual is such a place to go for comfort and soothing.” But it wasn’t until her stepfather was diagnosed with cancer and Harper started becoming more conscious about everything she was putting in and on her body that she decided to launch her own beauty label. “You are made of what you ingest,” Harper said. “Your skin is the biggest organ and it reacts to everything,” she added on why women should be selective with the products on their bathroom counter. “I started Tata Harper skincare out of personal need. I didn’t know what to use. I didn’t know how to replace the products that I was using that were super advanced, super high tech, really efficacious, really efficient for the skin. And all of a sudden I’m confronted with natural beauty that it’s very simplistic and very basic. And I am not a basic beauty girl,” she said. The beauty entrepreneur couldn’t find anything that was made of high-quality ingredients and effective, so she decided to cre The result was a line of cleansers, serums, moisturizers and eye creams that fuse natural ingredients such as calendula, arnica, alfalfa, chamomile and varieties of mint with technology for products that are not only organic but work. The cult-favorite Elixir Vitae Serum, for example, uses neuropeptide technology so that it relaxes wrinkles and serves as an alternative to injectables. In addition to being organic, Tata Harper aims to be completely sustainable and end single-use packaging. Each formula comes in recyclable glass, and the little plastic they do use for their tubes is derived from sugar cane, which means it is made from a renewable resource instead of petroleum. Even the packaging’s labels use soy-based ink for printing. “My hope for the beauty industry is that it becomes more sustainable for real,” Harper said. “Sometimes, a lot of the things that people call sustainable, are not really — and if you’re not sustainable, that means that you’re unsustainable,” she said. “I believe in refillable packaging. If the pump still works, if the bottle isn’t broken, then why are you throwing it away? If every customer reuses it, even once, they’re saving 12 from those packaging going into the landfill every month.” Her cult-classic Water-Lock Moisturizer can be refilled with a product pod once it runs out. Ingredients are also upcycled when possible. Recently, Harper collaborated with the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the UAE on three face and body treatments exclusively available at the Dubai hotel’s award-winning spa. “I’ve always been a huge Mandarin fan. And I just thought that this was the right venue to have our facial experiences,” Harper said, adding that they have plans to launch in other parts of the region as well. The treatments include one anti-aging facial, a full-body scrub and a skin-brightening ritual that leaves the limbs illuminated and smooth. Hotel guests and day spa guests are able to experience Harper’s 100 percent natural and all-organic, custom-created treatments and rituals, as well as purchase a full range of products from the spa’s boutique.
