  1. https://www.techspot.com/news/93478-intel-arc-alchemist-flagship-clocks-24-ghz-leaked.html After many delays, Intel is finally within months of delivering its first generation of discrete gaming GPUs, branded Arc Alchemist. Engineering samples are appearing regularly in public benchmark databases, giving us insight into their performance and specifications. Already, we know quite a bit about the series. At the top end, the Arc Alchemist flagship has 512 EUs and 16 GB of GDDR6, and then there are at least two smaller models with 256 and 128 EUs and correspondingly smaller amounts of memory. Before today, Intel GPUs had been seen at speeds of up to 2.1 GHz. But this morning, a handy Twitter bot found a new OpenCL benchmark entry from the 512 EU model and it had a peak frequency of exactly 2.4 GHz. On paper, a GPU with 512 EUs clocked at 2.4 GHz has 19.7 TFLOPs of power. Its rumored direct competitors, the RTX 3070 and 3070 Ti have just a fraction more. Performance in the benchmark didn’t quite measure up though. At 85,448 points, it scored only slightly better than an RTX 2060 Super. But there's any number of legitimate reasons why it might’ve underperformed, the likeliest of which is that it was clocked below 2.4 GHz for most of the run. In other leaked benchmark results, it’s done better and worse. In an OpenCL benchmark run from November, it achieved just ~68,000 points. But in a recent SiSoftware Sandra benchmark, it traded blows with the 3070 Ti and generally came out ahead. Intel’s GPU was clocked at 2.1 GHz during the SiSoftware benchmark, which means that at 2.4 GHz it could’ve pulled away from the 3070 Ti. Still, synthetic productivity benchmarks aren’t good indicators of gaming performance. Rest assured, when time comes, we'll have full blown reviews of Intel's new graphics cards.
  2. https://www.techradar.com/news/one-of-the-best-microsoft-teams-features-is-finally-available-to-all-users Microsoft is preparing an update for collaboration platform Teams that will extend one of the most useful features to an additional group of users. As explained in a new entry in the company’s product roadmap, Microsoft is bringing the ability to blur the video background to customers running Teams on virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). “Users on Teams on VDI on Azure Virtual Desktop/Windows 365 can blur their background in your video meeting and call,” the entry explains. The feature still appears to be under development, but should be made available to relevant Microsoft Teams users by the end of the month. Since the transition to remote working, a number of video conferencing vendors have rolled out virtual background functionality, which allows users to obscure the room behind them with an overlay of their choice. A more subtle option is to blur the background, which has the dual effect of obscuring anything incriminating that might be laying around in someone’s bedroom or home office and focusing the attention on the person’s face. Although Microsoft Teams has offered such a feature for a while now, it has traditionally been available to users of its desktop and mobile clients only. After bringing background effects to the web client last month, Microsoft is now completing the set by extending the feature to those running Teams on Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365. The broad objective is to ensure the meeting experience is consistent for all Microsoft Teams users, no matter which client or hardware they are using the dial in. Beyond the virtual backgrounds feature, Microsoft has made a number of recent additions to Teams with this goal in mind, including the ability to control calls using Bluetooth devices, combine work and business accounts and access screen-sharing controls across all clients. 3. https://www.pcgamer.com/rainbow-six-siege-is-getting-three-new-maps-in-year-seven/ Ubisoft released a long video outlining its plans for year seven of Rainbow Six Siege today, and there's a lot to look forward to in the tactical multiplayer shooter. The most exciting announcement was probably that Siege will receive three new maps in year seven, one apiece for the first three seasons of the year. The first will be a competitive map set in an Irish country club, with season two's offering being a team deathmatch map set in Greece. Season three will get another comp map, this time in Singapore, the home country of that season's new operator. The team also outlined further efforts to deal with toxic players and prevent harassment. Viewers will now be able to report players they are spectating via match replay, and the team will be proactively disabling the friendly fire, voice, and text chat functionality for players who have been reported for abusing them. I'm a bit curious as to how the friendly fire restriction will be implemented, as that seems like it could be a bit of an advantage, something you could deliberately trigger for yourself before playing ranked matches, for example, but we'll have to see how it works in-game. Ubisoft will be rolling out a reputation system in stages throughout the year, with the most surprising feature being restricted account features for players with a low enough reputation. Ubisoft's video cited Alpha Pack rewards and the Test Server as privileges that would be restricted for low-rep players. Siege will be seeing some major gametype changes too: Team Deathmatch and Arcade will have permanent playlists starting in year seven, a response to community demand for more low-stakes content than Siege's typical knife-edge maximum intensity. For fans of knife-edge maximum intensity, the ranking system will get overhauled with the second season. The team has promised more and better rewards, as well as an adjustment to the way placement matches work. The kicker is that the new system will place players below where it expects them to settle, allowing for a sense of progress and development in subsequent matches. Year seven will also introduce a host of new accessibility features, including more options for gun sights, more granular gamepad settings, and clearer marking denoting which team gadgets that have been placed belong to. Last, some operators will be getting major reworks and balance adjustments, with Thatcher singled out in particular. The video also included a code for a free charm, redeemable here with the code "R6SI-SI22-CHIB-CHAR," though some commenters reported issues with getting it to work. All-in all, it's looking like a promising year for the po[CENSORED]r tactical shooter. It's unclear if this interior is another view of the season one Ireland map, or our first look at the season two Greece map. (Image credit: Ubisoft)

  9. https://www.arabnews.com/node/2028031/saudi-arabia WWE superstars on Friday showed Saudi students how to wrestle with bullying as part of their “Be A Star” campaign. Around 60 girls and boys, from grades three to nine from Dar Al-Fikr School in Jeddah, got the chance to learn about loneliness and struggles from some of the toughest-looking people in the world. The students arrived at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium and were greeted by a voice that perhaps every WWE fan would recognize in a heartbeat — Mike Rome, the announcer for wrestling bouts. The superstars sharing their experiences were: Titus O’Neil, Natalya, Drew McIntyre, Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Nikki A.S.H, Rome welcomed the wrestlers and the students, dividing them into three groups with two superstars each. The team had activities planned but these were not just for fun, they were there to teach children about different things and help them understand bigger themes in life. The activities included team members introducing themselves and naming something they enjoyed when a ball of yarn was thrown at them. They would then pass it on to another student in the circle while holding on to the thread. By the end of the exercise they were all connected together, despite their different personalities. After the activities, the WWE stars took turns in sharing their own personal struggles and how to deal with them. They mentioned cyberbullying, what made them different and how being different was not a bad thing, how to deal with their negative emotions, and what to do if someone else was “Especially with cyberbullying, it doesn’t matter if you are in Jeddah or Texas there are people online that are saying and doing mean things,” O’Neil told Arab News. “It is up to us, people with a platform, to teach everyone how to deal with these things, how to manage their emotions. “I always tell people, ‘Don’t take it personally if they don’t know you personally.’ There are a lot of people that would say stuff about you that is negative but they don’t even know you, they just know the television character, your name, or your social media handle.” Nicola Glencross, who wrestles under the ring name Nikki A.S.H, shared her story with the students. “I had to deal with a lot of cyberbullying, people hated the mask I wore and the costume. If someone is bullying you there is always something you can do, you can talk to an adult, you can mute them.” She also explained the psychology of the bully: “People need a response and I don’t give it to them, I am a superhero. I don’t need to deal with that.” Rome asked who in the crowd was bullied. Some students raised their hands but all of the wrestlers did, showing the children that, despite the massive difference between them and their talent, there were similarities as well. Natalya, whose real name is Natalie Katherine Neidhart-Wilson, told Arab News: “It’s important for the kids to see that we are all connected, we are really all alike. They may see us on television, and you know WWE is a global company and we are all around the world in 180 different countries and 30 different languages. For the kids to see us and see that they are on TV every week and they are just like us, it’s a very grounding experience for them to realize we are all relatable.” She said that they had all been through hardships, bullying, and adversity. Another thing that Natalya wanted to help the children with was to regulate their emotions and deal with the problems they may face on their social media so they felt more equipped to combat the issues. “We want them to be able to stand up for themselves, to be strong and positive.” The children left the venue feeling stronger and more positive than before. And, as for the stars themselves, they were buzzing with excitement for the upcoming event and for being back in Jeddah. O’Neil said: “Jeddah is the place that made me famous. People here are so nice and kind. Coming here for the first time was a really eye-opening experience for me because you see all those stereotypical things on the news and then you actually come here and it is the exact opposite.” Natalya said that she was honored to be part of one of the three women’s fights taking place in Saudi Arabia. “It’s a huge honor to be able to do that as a woman in WWE.”
  10. https://www.pcgamer.com/mad-max-2-may-have-been-in-development-before-the-pandemic/ Released in 2015, Avalanche's open-world Aussie apocalypse sim Mad Max turned out to be quite good, and it reportedly sold quite well, too. But it never got a sequel: After its launch, Avalanche returned to the Just Cause series, made Rage 2 for Bethesda, and is now working on a '70s smuggling sim called Contraband. But die-hard warriors of the wasteland were given a ray of hope last week when a photo allegedly taken during the development of Mad Max 2 was shared on social media. "Before times, at @AvalancheSweden in New York, when O'Neil invited me to get scanned to be in Mad Max 2, as a rebel," creative technologist Wendy W. Fok tweeted. "The magic of #photogrammetry, 3D Scanning, & many cameras @MadMaxGame." It's not at all ambiguous—Mad Max 2 is right there in the tweet. Even so, it's far from clear that a new Mad Max game is in the works. For one thing, while Fok's "before times" tweet doesn't indicate when the photo was taken, it appeared on the We Designs Twitter feed way back in February 2017. That was a full five years ago, and less than two years after the release of Mad Max—a reasonable window for production on a Mad Max sequel to be underway, and more than enough time for the project to be cancelled, especially with the onset of the pandemic. It may be a bit of a stretch, but it's possible that Fok and her coworkers were actually destined for Rage 2, or were redirected that way at some point—Rage NPCs are essentially Mad Max villains, after all. Whatever the case, it's notable that neither Avalanche nor Mad Max publisher Warner Bros Interactive have rushed to get the tweet taken down. They're clearly not too concerned about the cat being let out of the bag on this one. So it's possible that a new Mad Max is in development at Avalanche, but is it likely happening, right now? I"m not convinced. Just in case, though, I've reached out to Wok and Avalanche Studios for more information, and will update if I receive a reply. Moreover, users will be blocked from adding funds to their accounts starting August 29, 2022.
  12. https://www.techradar.com/news/there-are-better-ways-to-take-a-photo-of-your-pet-in-ios-15-thanks-to-obscura-3 Taking photos in iOS has always been a relatively simple affair, just by using the Camera app by Apple. But third-party developers have gone further to make the iPhone camera work harder for you and the photos you take every day. This is what Obscura has been doing since its launch in 2015. Developed by the Obscura team of Ben Rice McCarthy, Adam K. Schmidt and Sara Lovic, the third version of the app launched this week (February 17) for $9.99 / £9.99 / AU$10.99. This new version brings a redesigned gallery view, video capture, refined layouts for controlling exposure settings, and the multiple lenses of the iPhone models, alongside controller support. This allows anyone with an Xbox or PlayStation controller, to take a photo through Obscura 3. Having used the update for a month, it’s a significant improvement over Obscura 2. The new gallery view brings your albums front and center, giving you a quick overview of what you want to select. There’s also the ability to rate your photos, not just a thumbs up or down as in Apple’s Photos app. Here, you could take a selection of photos, say different locations for a wedding venue for instance, and rate them in order. It makes sorting some photos much easier, as it could help you decide on certain locations or products for those important situations. It’s the gestures that help make Obscura 3 shine - especially the exposure gesture. As you’re taking a photo, you can press the exposure icon on the bottom-left of the app to change how light or dark you need the image to be. But if you use your thumb to slide up and down on the icon, you can more accurately choose the exposure point instead. These little touches are found across the app in this third version. While you can’t currently change the default camera app in iOS, Obscura 3 makes a compelling case for why the option should be there for pro users. Speaking with McCarthy after the launch of Obscura 3, I asked them whether the pandemic inspired the development of the new update, in regards to features and what users were asking for. “Not particularly. In an ideal world we would have taken a trip to somewhere exciting to take incredible marketing photos of rainforests or glaciers,” McCarthy clarifies. “But for the most part, the production of Obscura 3 wasn’t all that different to Obscura 2.” With every major update to an app, there’s always the question of what the main objective was for the newest version. We asked McCarthy what the aim was for Obscura this time. “Am I allowed to say everything? Because we really did throw it all out and start from scratch,” McCarthy continues. “There are obvious changes like the new camera interface, but everything has been rewritten and improved, like the gesture to close the camera, the photo capture pipeline, the filters to support P3 color, I could go on all day. “If I had to choose just one though, I’d probably say the Image Detail view,” McCarthy reveals. “There’s an astonishing amount of complexity to it. It was honestly pretty janky in Obscura 2. It now has better support for RAW files, depth data, video (for the first time!), and is much smoother at handling changes to the photo library while you’re browsing. The triage features are also really neat if you care about keeping your library organized.” We wanted to mention the Exposure wheel, which we found very intuitive for allowing certain amounts of light in. We asked McCarthy how this came to be, and why it’s arriving in this update. “Conceptually, the Exposure and Focus dials were planned from the very start. In fact, I had built a very rudimentary version of them in Obscura 1, but it wasn’t great,” McCarthy explains. “We played around with the functionality quite a bit. Should the dial have values displayed around the ring? Should the sensitivity vary as it expands? How sensitive should the haptic feedback be? But everything we added made it feel less intuitive and more distracting. In the end, the simpler it was, the more natural and like using a physical camera it felt.” With the new gallery view being a tentpole feature of Obscura 3, we asked McCarthy whether there was going to be an option for opening the app and having the gallery appear first. “I had thought of making that an option for the forthcoming iPad version, which is well suited to browsing and editing photos, but I hadn’t really considered it for the phone,” McCarthy explains. “But if we build that functionality anyway, I don’t see why we wouldn’t add it to the phone.” In-app purchases, or IAPs, are ways for users to buy more features for an app. In previous Obscura versions, this allowed you to buy additional filters, but for Obscura 3, there are no IAPs this time. We asked McCarthy what the reasons for this were, and if IAPs have had their due, especially for photography apps. “There were a few reasons behind this decision, benefitting both us and the user. The first is that we wanted to avoid the feeling of upselling, especially when the user is in the middle of taking photos,” McCarthy explains. “Secondly, the StoreKit API has also been a pain to work with in the past and was the source of more support email than any other part of the app. And thirdly, having IAPs for filters necessitated having example photos for the product pages, and those added quite a considerable amount to Obscura’s download size (O2 was about 70MB and O3 is down to about 5MB, though the sample photos weren’t the only factor).” The gallery view also shows promise for other Apple platforms, such as macOS, an operating system that doesn’t have an Obscura app. We wondered whether this is something up for consideration. “I’m certainly not promising anything right now, but I have tried building it for the Mac using Catalyst and it mostly runs without issue,” McCarthy reveals. “The real work would be in making it feel more at home on macOS, so I guess we’ll have to see if we can find the time to make it happen.” A surprising feature was the integration of controller support in Obscura 3. You could use a Dual Sense controller to take a photo if needed. We asked whether this was always intended and if there are further plans to expand this in the future. “As I was working on the Apple Watch companion app, it occurred to me that it would be nice if there was an alternative for people who don’t have one. And I had a spare PS4 controller (in theory for playing more games on iOS, though I rarely use it) and I realized that could be a decent alternative,” McCarthy reveals. “There’s not much functionality there right now, but we have plenty of ideas on improving this feature that just didn’t make the cut for launch.” Finally, widgets are still being heavily used on iPhone and iPad devices, where you can place bite-sized information on your home screen without launching the app. For Obscura, this seems to be a natural step, especially for rated photos and shortcuts for launching different modes of the app. We asked McCarthy whether this was something that they were considering. “Definitely. As soon as the launch chaos is over we’re going to start work on widgets, and we already have a few planned,” McCarthy continues. “Having access via the lock screen is a big bonus that widgets also provide. And given that we may never see an option to set third-party camera apps as the default, we have to take what opportunities we can get.” Our pick of the best iPhone deals in 2022 so far
