As businesses of all sizes look to recover and thrive following the pandemic, getting the most out of their data will be critical. But in an enterprise world rapidly moving towards hybrid working and cloud-first approaches, finding the most effective way to do that can be a significant challenge. Splunk has long positioned itself as a key helper for businesses looking to streamline or upgrade their data capabilities, and revealed a number of new releases and updates at its recent .conf 21 event designed to do just that. But the company wants to do a whole lot more for its customers, so TechRadar Pro went to find out more. Cloud-first "The way we see it playing out is when our engineers build, everything we build, we're building in the cloud first,” Shawn Bice, President of Products and Technology at Splunk, told TechRadar Pro. "Our mental model is that you build for the cloud first, and then you're testing these bits out all the time, and then every six months or so you turn the crank, and you package up a corresponding set of bits that you deliver on-prem. That allows us to be constantly building in the cloud, whether it be a Google environment, an Amazon environment, or an Azure environment, because those environments are different. They're not all universally the same.” "Multi-cloud and hybrid is a real thing - I have customers that when they spend money, they're spending money across Google, Amazon and Azure, but they might not spend the equal amount of money.” “But they're leveraging big cloud providers in a way where they pick the best tool or they get the best pricing - and there's hybrid or on premise in the mix, too. So you know, so when you meet somebody, they'll tell you, 'Hey, I got data across multiple clouds, it's on prem, I'm now doing the edge' - and they want Splunk to be there with them, wherever their data is." One way Splunk is looking to not just keep current customers, but also lure in new ones, is through the introduction of workload pricing. This will mean customers can buy based on the exact infrastructure used to deliver services, meaning no one should pay over the limit. Bice notes that such an approach has been around for some time, but few companies are offering it. "When people learn about workload-based pricing, they love it,” he notes, “it's about storage, and compute, just like anything else that you would buy up in the cloud. So from that regard, I think, pretty much I would expect everybody to switch over to this because the economics are just better." “The more customers that are able to take advantage of that, they're just going to be saving, and that's a good thing to do for people. So I always like to remind people that it's not necessarily a new shiny feature, but it's going to be better economics for you and you're going to be able to get more out of the system, spend less and that's just a good thing for any business.” Working for the long term Splunk has launched some intriguing new features and additions to its portfolio, including new Ingest Actions that allow customers to action data in motion, and a boosted Federated Search feature that provides a unified search experience across all deployment types in a single search bar, allowing users to track down the exact data they want. Post-pandemic, Bice notes that, remote working boils down to one issue for most customers: “they just want everything to work”. "So if you have to build technology in a slightly different way, realizing that the way people are interacting with it is slightly different,” he adds. “You know, those are things that you just do. I don't think anybody here believes that the pandemic is a common goal kind of thing. I personally think its maybe changed the workforce for the long term." But Splunk is enthusiastic about what its new offerings can provide for customers, with Bice, who only joined the company recently after spells at AWS and Microsoft, noting the opportunities the new tools provide. "I would never assume just because you feel something, people will come,” he says, “I've made that mistake once or twice in my career...I definitely recognize a lot of these customers have their own businesses to run, they're not waking up each and every day wondering what we did. So I think part of our job is to make sure we understand... what customers are trying to do." Looking to up your data game? Here's our pick of the best Business Intelligence (BI) tools around

Rumor mill: Another supposed benchmark leak earlier this month already suggested Intel's upcoming Alder Lake Core i5 processors will outperform AMD's counterpart, the Ryzen 5 5600X. This week, more benchmarks seem to provide a better picture of different levels of performance. Two leaks appeared on Twitter over the weekend claiming to show CPU-Z benchmarks for the Core i5-12600K at stock and overclocked speeds. The person who posted the overclocked benchmark says they can't confirm whether or not it's real. A couple weeks ago, rumors already indicated the i5-12400 outdid the 5600X. According to that leak, the processor will have a base clock of 2.5GHz, boosting up to 4.0GHz on multi-core and 4.4GHz on one core. With six cores and 12 threads, it scored 681.7 points in a single-thread CPU-Z test and 4,983.8 points in a multi-thread test. According to the latest leaks, by comparison the stock 12600K has a 3.7GHz base clock. It boosts up to 4.5GHz on multi-core and 4.9GHz on single-core, and has 16 threads. Its single-thread CPU-Z score is 746.2 points and its multi-thread score is 7058.1 points. The overclocked CPU-Z scores are partially censored in the Twitter screenshot, showing "79X.X" and "72XX.X" for the single-thread and multi-thread scores, respectively. Those overclock numbers are within spitting distance of reported scores for the i7-12700K. Amazon Netherlands has estimated a price of $311 for the 12600K. It's expected that Intel will formally reveal the Alder Lake CPUs at an event later this week, and put them on sale next week.

Micro Center has partnered up with Asus to provide a new PC Builder Tool that gives novice PC builders an easy way to assemble the parts for a new gaming PC by doing most of the part selection for you. More importantly, it's a way to guarantee getting an RTX 30-series graphics card, one of the best graphics cards, though at a rather high price. Think of it as another form of bundling, similar to the Newegg Shuffle, but without the lottery aspect. You have the option of choosing one of three tiers: Value, Performance, and Ultimate. There are options for either Intel or AMD platforms on each tier. However, each system comes configured as a barebones system, meaning it's missing the CPU, Storage, RAM, and even the OS. You will have to add those system components separately, which quickly bumps up the price. You can also have Micro Center build the system out for you for $200, if you select all the extra components and OS, or you can do it yourself. Effectively, what Asus and Micro Center are shipping to you is a DIY barebones kit, or potentially a complete system. What's interesting about this idea is that you can choose the major system components yourself, from a limited selection. The included parts naturally all come from Asus, but you can pick the CPU, RAM, and storage. But on the downside, these options aren't selected for you by default, and you have to pay full price for the OS. That's something the best prebuild desktops and DIY kits like NZXT's BLD kits already do. It'll be interesting to see how this strategy plays out. Micro Center does have a different build tool that allows a far greater selection of components, but that may not guarantee you a graphics card. We suspect this is a way to get new GPUs into the hands of DIY PC gamers who are trying to put together a new system. But that could mean fewer standalone GPUs for sale, which could make it even harder to grab a GPU on its own from Micro Center if some of the company's graphics card allocation gets prioritized toward Asus' barebones systems — or at least, most of the Asus graphics card allocation. Graphics Card Pricing Strategy With how serious the graphics shortage has become, and the rather horrible GPU prices for cards being sold online, we priced out each build to see if Micro Center is giving you a price that's close to MSRP on the graphics card. Spoiler alert: It's absolutely not. The barebones systems are by no means cheap and start at $979 for the AMD Value kit, and $999 for the Intel version. Each build comes with Asus-themed components, so the Value build for example includes an Asus Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Dual V2 graphics card, TUF Gaming 650W Bronze PSU, and an Asus TUF GT301 tempered glass ATX chassis. You also get either a Z590-A Prime motherboard for Intel builds (starting at $1,000) or a B550-F ROG Strix Gaming motherboard for AMD (starting at $980).

Zoom has announced that it will bring a po[CENSORED]r feature from the paid version of its video conferencing software to all of its free users in an effort to make its platform more accessible. While auto-generated captions or live transcription was previously only available to the company's paid users, the feature, which provides automatic captioning during a Zoom video call, is now available on all free Zoom Meetings accounts according to a new blog post. Auto-generated captioning is just one of the accessible features built into Zoom. The company also provides keyboard accessibility, pinning or spotlighting interpreter video, screen reader support and voicemail transcription to make its video conferencing software accessible to even more users. Enabling auto-generated captions In order to enable closed captioning for a personal account, you first need to sign into the Zoom web portal, navigate to the Settings option and click the Meeting tab. Under In Meeting (Advanced), you can click on the Closed captioning toggle to enable or disable it. Zoom's video conferencing software even allows you to use caption API Tokens to integrate with other third-party closed captioning services if you have a preferred one you're already using. It's also worth noting that the company's auto-generated captions are viewable in Zoom Rooms for those that have already returned to the office. By adding auto-generated captions to its free plan, Zoom is making its platform more accessible which should help prevent users from choosing to host their video calls on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or another competing video conferencing service.

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-59040538 A key pledge ahead of an upcoming climate change conference has still not been met and the money is not sure to be available before 2023. The UK government has set out a new financing plan ahead of next week's climate change conference - COP26. It talks of how developed countries hope to deliver $100bn a year in climate finance to developing countries. The original aim was for that target to be reached by 2020. But the financing plan said the target looked "unlikely" to be met but that it was "confident" the target would be hit by 2023. Some environmentalists say the new plan is too little, too late. COP26 President-Designate Alok Sharma said: "This plan recognises progress, based on strong new climate finance commitments. There is still further to go, but this delivery plan, alongside the robust methodological report from the OECD, provides clarity, transparency and accountability. Greenhouse gas build-up hit new high in 2020 How do we know climate change is caused by humans? "It is a step towards rebuilding trust and gives developing countries more assurance of predictable support." Climate finance plays a critical role in helping developing countries tackle climate change and adapt to its impacts. In 2009, developed countries agreed to mobilise $100bn in climate finance per year by 2020, and in 2015 agreed to extend this goal through to 2025. However, the UK COP26 Presidency now says the $100bn goal is likely to fall short in 2021 and 2022 - though is confident it will be met in 2023. Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, said: "To provide confidence and momentum going into COP26, the $100bn climate finance goal must be met immediately, not in 2023. "The financing announcement is extremely disappointing in that it asks us as developing countries to wait even longer for the delivery of a promise that was first made more than a decade ago. I know the UK presidency has worked very hard for this, and I appreciate their efforts, but this is not sufficient to lay the groundwork for a successful outcome at COP26. "Unless more progress is made in the next fortnight, we will all be in trouble. " The finance delivery plan was produced by Jonathan Wilkinson and Jochen Flasbarth, environment ministers from Canada and Germany, respectively, at the request of Mr Sharma. Canadian finance minister Jonathan Wilkinson was keen to stress that in his view the plan would achieve the $100bn goal per year over the 2020-2025 period. "We have much greater confidence that the goal that was agreed upon will in fact, be achieved, and in fact, it will be overachieved beyond 2023 so I think that's very good news. "And I think that, perhaps through this process, we've moved the bar in terms of how we can provide greater confidence and transparency going forward." On Monday, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said it was "touch and go" whether the upcoming COP26 global climate conference will secure the agreements needed to help tackle climate change. "It is going to be very, very tough this summit. I am very worried because it might go wrong and we might not get the agreements that we need and it is touch and go, it is very, very difficult, but I think it can be done," he said. In the meantime, the climate crisis continues to deepen: the World Meteorological Organization has said the build-up of warming gases in the atmosphere rose to record levels in 2020 despite the pandemic. The amounts - or concentrations - of CO2, methane and nitrous oxide rose by more than the annual average in the past 10 years. "Developing countries have been rightfully disappointed that so far developed countries have not delivered on the $100bn pledge that was already given in 2009," said the one of the plan's authors, Jochen Flasbarth, Germany's secretary of state for the environment. "Hence, I am glad that the process I was honoured to lead jointly with minister Jonathan Wilkinson has created momentum to help complying with the finance commitment overall in the period up to 2025. We are very aware that also after today's release of the Delivery Plan, a lot of work remains."

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-essex-59036023 A priest said he felt forced to delete his Twitter account after being accused of not doing enough to administer last rites to Sir David Amess. Fr Jeffrey Woolnough said he rushed to the scene on 15 October when he heard the MP - a devout Catholic - had been stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. But the priest said police would not let him enter to deliver the sacrament as it was a crime scene. Fr Woolnough said criticism he had since received was "hurtful". "Most people have been so kind with messages of support, others have accused me of capitulating at the scene," he said. "The police have a job to do. When I say I have to respect it, it doesn't mean I agree with it. "But I have to respect as a law-abiding citizen that the police would not allow me in and I had to find plan B, and plan B for me was prayer, and I had to pray on the spot, pray on the rosary." Fr Woolnough is the parish priest at St Peter's Catholic Church, Eastwood, Southend, close to where Sir David was killed. He said he "foolishly" tried to defend his actions on social media but it "stirred up a hornet's nest" so he deleted his Twitter account. Priest tried to give last rites to dying MP MPs could get police protection at local meetings Sir David Amess: Fun, friendly and always outspoken "I was trying to let people know I had tried my very best but apparently my best wasn't good enough," he said. Fr Woolnough said he had since had telephone conversations with "some really top priests in the hierarchy" who told him he "did the right thing". The "Amess amendment" has since been proposed to ensure access for Catholic priests, including at crime scenes. The intention is to add it to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. The man accused of killing Sir David will face trial next year. Ali Harbi Ali, 25, of Kentish Town in north London, is charged with murder and the preparation of terrorist acts. An inquest into the death of Sir David is due to be opened by the Essex coroner on Wednesday.

It’s official, the redesigned Google smartphones are finally here. Google introduces the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with its distinctive design and powered by Google Tensor. The latest Pixel addition is Google’s first-ever processor that would come with an Android 12. These smartphones are fast, incredibly smart, and secure just for you. Earlier this year, Google teased us with a look for Android 12, which featured bigger buttons, a large clock on the home screen that changes size based on the number of notifications that appear, and muted pastel colors. We were also teased with features series of productivity updates, including an option to hold the power button for Google Assistant to make a phone call or ask for an article to be read out loud, and augmented reality tools in Google Maps With the addition of Google-owned Tensor to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, users are exposed to a wide range of entirely new capabilities with their smartphones. Google Tensors is a chip designed specifically around Google’s AI and carries the latest advancements in Machine Learning at lower power consumption compared to previous Pixel phones. Google’s new in-house Tensor processor marks a move away from the third-party chips that are commonly used in rival Android devices. According to Google, Tensor guarantees that the Pixel 6 smartphones run 80% faster than the Pixel 5, allowing on-device artificial intelligence for features such as more accurate speech recognition and image processing. For Pixel lovers who are enthusiastic about games, the Tensors also provides the phones with extra processing power for games and apps and makes some of its new camera tools possible. According to market research firm IDC. Last year Google’s Pixel barely represented 1% of the global smartphones market, with the sale of about 3.7 million units. But with indelible Google’s effort at creating a tailor-made processor for its own Google Android software which will create a fantastic experience for end-users. Chances are that the tech giant is ready to take a much bigger slice of the global smartphones market sales The new Pixel line has a bold look that makes the camera bar very noticeable thereby giving the phone a clean, symmetrical design that puts the camera front-and-center. Pixel 6 has a distinctive graphic and vibrant look with a matte black metal band that complements its expressive, versatile color options. The inspiration for Pixel 6 Pro came from the finishes you see in luxury jewelry and watches. The polished metal body of Pixel 6 Pro presents a gorgeous curved glass in colors that complement the metallic frames. The Pixel 6 will be available in three fantastic colors — Seafoam, Kinda Coral, and black, while the Pixel 6 Pro is available in sunny, white, and black.

Something to look forward to: On an earnings call last week, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced that Intel had recently powered on their first prototype of a Meteor Lake processor, a member of the 14th-gen Core series and their first consumer-oriented product to use the Intel 4 node. "I am happy to share that Intel 7, Intel 4, Intel 3, Intel 20A, and Intel 18A are all on or ahead of the timelines we set out in July. For example, on Intel 4, we said we had taped out our compute tile for Meteor Lake," Gelsinger told investors. "In this quarter, it came out of the fab and powered up, and within 30 minutes, with outstanding performance, right where we expected it to be. All told, this is one of the best lead product startups we have seen in recent memory, which speaks to the health of the process." Meteor Lake will be a major advancement in the consumer space. When Intel announced it in July, they said that it will be their first series to separate the compute, I/O, and GPU components into separate chiplets, or as they call them, "tiles." AMD and Intel are already leveraging chiplet technology inside their CPUs, but in a way that reduces their performance when compared to non-chiplet designs with the same number of cores. Intel wants to reduce that compromise for Meteor Lake by using Foveros, a packaging technique that leverages an active interposer to improve inter-chiplet communication. Meteor Lake specifically targets the 5-125 W range and will be used for both laptop and desktop processors. It can be integrated with Xe GPUs that have between 96 and 192 EUs, which will be comparable to current entry-level and midrange discrete GPUs. Before Meteor Lake arrives, however, both Alder Lake and Raptor Lake need to debut. Intel has been forthcoming with details about Alder Lake and has indicated that the series will launch soon, while Raptor Lake is a mystery slated for next year. Meteor Lake will follow in 2023.

Sony’s PS5 gaming console has a bright future ahead, especially during these challenging times, where even mid-tier GPUs cost more than the PS5 (see our GPU price index). Sony has already sold millions of PS5s, so it is natural to have some consoles that don’t operate properly. For instance, some users are complaining about coil whine noise from the PS5’s PSU. What is more embarrassing is that there is currently no replacement part available for the ARP-400DR PSU that the PS5 uses, and if you try to find it on eBay, you will notice that the listings are few and super expensive. The ARP-400DR is built by Delta Electronics, one of the largest PSU manufacturers, and its quality is excellent, but this doesn’t mean that it is bullet-proof. There should be a replacement option for this part since many PS5 consoles will soon be out of warranty. The ARP-400DR doesn’t have any active cooling, relying entirely on the main cooling fan of the PS5. Its plastic case with the tiny ventilation holes doesn’t make things look better, and the only thing that saves the day is that it is mildly utilized since the PS5 only draws around 200W during gaming while this PSU’s max power reaches 372W. Nonetheless, this PSU will shut down in minutes without cooling due to over-temperature protection with a 350W load. We thought that a replacement power supply for the PS5 would be a good idea mainly for these reasons: No power supply has 100% efficiency, and there will never be one that does. This means that every PSU is a heat source, especially if it doesn’t have a cooling fan to remove the heat out of its internals. The same goes for the ARP-400DR that the PS5 uses. With 200W load and 230V input, it has a 16.25W thermal load, while with the same load and 100V input, its thermal load is 23.84W. This might not sound much, but a PS5 console will be used for many gaming hours, so even such a low thermal load will be added to the APU’s, RAM, and Flash memory’s thermal load.

Norton Family is a parental control suite from the respected antivirus vendor, which covers PCs and mobiles. It’s an in-depth product that seeks to ensure that your kids stay safe online. But how does it do that, and exactly what features are included? In this article, we’re going to provide a breakdown of the functionality included with Norton Family and what devices it supports, before discussing how good this suite is for parental control duties. What devices can I use Norton Family on? Norton Family can be installed on unlimited devices, and supports not just Windows PCs, but also Android and iOS devices (the only thing you don’t get here is support for Macs, basically). Windows 10 (but not Windows 10 S Mode) and Windows 8 are supported – but not the Edge browser – and on mobile, you need to be running Android 6.0 or better, or if you have an Apple device, iOS 13 or newer. Norton Family: what features does it have? Want to know what this suite is capable of? Let’s look at some of the highlights of Norton Family’s feature set. Note that some abilities are only available on certain platforms – so app blocking, for instance, is just on Android – and we’ll flag this up wherever this is the case. Web Supervision A core element of any piece of parental control software, this lets you see where your kids are browsing on the web, and facilitates the blocking of inappropriate sites. It’s possible to block content over a whole host of diverse categories (not just the usual options relating to pornography, drugs and so forth). Time Supervision As the name suggests, this allows for setting time limits and managing when your kids can use their devices, blocking them off at bedtime or maybe meal times (or you can use ‘Instant Lock’ to temporarily, but instantly, block a device). School Time With home schooling perhaps still on your mind following lockdowns in some countries, this feature helps to manage remote learning on the child’s device, keeping them focused on work and not allowing any distractions by limiting web access strictly to educational content (which could be useful for homework time, too). Search Supervision This lets you monitor your child’s web searching activities to see if they’re looking for anything inappropriate. It also implements Norton’s Safe Search to filter out unsuitable search results. Furthermore, videos watched at YouTube are monitored and you can see a thumbnail and description to quickly let you judge whether a viewed clip might be anything potentially dodgy.

The Oculus Go felt like an experiment in standalone VR when it first launched in 2018, a tentative first step towards tether-free VR gaming. It succeeded in proving a point, though: that standalone headsets had potential. Nowadays, Oculus is primarily a standalone headset brand with the po[CENSORED]r Quest 2. It all happened rather quickly, too, and the Go swiftly became outgunned in just a couple of years. So what do you do with your ageing Oculus kit? In part thanks to Id Software founder John Carmack, who is currently consulting CTO of Oculus VR, you can now do whatever you want with it. This opens up the ability to repurpose the hardware for more things today, and means that a randomly discovered shrink wrapped headset twenty years from now will be able to update to the final software version, long after over-the-air update servers have been shut down.September 24, 2021 Oculus is now offering full root access to the Oculus Go system software. This new unlocked OS build allows any Go user to install whatever they want on their headset and ultimately repurpose it to their own needs. Once the unlocked OS is installed you will no longer be able to receive any official updates from Oculus. That means you'll not receive any security updates or bug fixes on the headset through 2022. That said, from 2023 onwards, Facebook will no longer support the Oculus or maintain the system software, which means from then on you're not missing out on much by keeping the locked OS installed. You're not missing out on much today, either. Facebook has already put an end to any new apps or features coming to the Oculus Go through official means, so this newly unlocked OS is your best bet for safely installing new stuff on your Go headset. If you want to install the new unlocked OS, just grab the build and follow the steps laid out on the official download page. Just bear in mind, if you b0rk your headset bootloading some dodgy app, that's on you. So be careful with your tinkering and installs if you want your Go to retire gracefully. Opening up the software side of the Oculus Go is a step in the right direction, that's for sure. This headset could quite as easily have been left to rot after its manufacturer set the expiry date, but instead, it could receive a second-wind from savvy developers and programmers—one less device sent to an early grave in the e-waste scrap heap.
