Tesla has withdrawn its latest "full self-driving" car software update after drivers complained of problems. Some drivers reported intermittent issues such as safety alerts sounding, despite no danger being present. The latest version was rolled back on Sunday afternoon, less than a day after it was released. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said there were "some issues" with this version, but it was "to be expected with beta software". A few hours earlier, Mr Musk said the launch would be delayed because the company's quality assurance team had found "regression in some left turns at traffic lights. But it was released anyway, before being quickly withdrawn on Sunday after drivers reported the problems. It comes as Tesla raised the price of four of its electric vehicles in the US. Thatcham Research, which conducts safety tests for motor insurers in the UK, said there were concerns over Tesla's move to beta-test new software with real-world drivers. "The challenge you've got is you're allowing your customers to be the guinea pigs," said Matthew Avery, director of research at Thatcham. "There are obvious safety challenges with customers trying it out, and either misunderstanding it or getting it wrong. "There's a risk that there could be systems that are not safe, which could lead to potential accidents." Despite the name, Tesla's semi-autonomous driving technology cannot be used as a substitute for a driver. The company still instructs its users to keep their hands on the wheel at all times, and a warning sounds if they fail to do so. Mr Avery said that while a risk existed with beta software in Tesla's cars, the fact that the car is not truly autonomous is important. "There is no such thing as full self-driving," he said. "That's very much a marketing term. These vehicles are still assisted driving... effectively the car supporting you. "These systems are not taking over on behalf of the driver." Separately, car rental giant Hertz announced it is ordering 100,000 Tesla vehicles. It is the largest single purchase for electric vehicles on record, according to Bloomberg. Tesla's stock reached a new record high of more than $970 (£705) as a result of the announcement. The deal comes a year after Hertz filed for bankruptcy protection in the US as the pandemic saw its business plummet.

Something to look forward to: Just a couple of weeks after Western Digital released its first 20-terabyte hard drive, its CEO spoke at a conference where he laid out some of its future plans. They include details on the technology Western Digital plans to use in the future to push storage capacity even further. At the annual Wells Fargo TMT Summit this week, one of the subjects Western Digital CEO David Goeckeler spoke about was the company's approach to technologies like OptiNAND, SRM, and HAMR. Goeckeler considers all three crucial to increasing density and getting to ever-larger hard drives. Last year, Seagate shipped out its 20TB hard drives, which use HAMR to select data center customers. Last month, WD released its own 20TB drives to general consumers (currently sold out) with OptiNAND technology, which uses flash memory to store metadata. "We're heavily invested in HAMR," he said. "HAMR is going to be real, it's going to be in the future," Goeckeler said. HAMR will increase the longevity of hard drives but will also require a lot of software work and won't be commercialized for several years. WD and Seagate both want to get to 30TB by the middle of the decade, and Seagate intends to reach 100TB by 2030. Goeckeler thinks WD already has the stepping stones to get there with ePMR (energy-assisted storage), SMR (another density-increasing method), and OptiNAND. "I think SMR is going to get more real and customers are getting more real about it," the WD boss said. One of those steps could be 22TB hard drives in 2022. WD's current high-capacity HDD uses nine platters, with 2.2TB per platter. Goeckeler says they can release one with a 10th platter. One technology Goeckeler doesn't mention is MAMR. Western Digital proposed the technology in 2017, saying it could allow for 40TB hard drives by 2025.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-59505204 The Conservatives have held on to their safe south-east London seat of Old Bexley and Sidcup in a by-election. The election was prompted by the death of former MP James Brokenshire, who died from cancer aged 53 in October. Conservative councillor Louie French won with over half the votes, but with a low turnout the Tories' majority was much reduced. Mr French paid tribute to his friend Mr Brokenshire, saying the contest had been tough but "fought with dignity". The voter turnout was low at 34% - although by-election votes are historically lower than general election turnout. In 2019, during the general election, the voter turnout was 69.8%. It meant the Tories' majority has been cut from nearly 19,000 to 4,478, with a 10% swing to Labour. In his acceptance speech, Mr French said he will "work tirelessly to repay the trust that you've placed in me and I will not let you down". "My focus will now be delivering on those promises that I made during the campaign - get our fair share of London's police officers, securing more investment for local schools and hospitals, protecting our precious green spaces." He added: "This is the greatest honour of my life. And I hope it inspires people to achieve their own dreams." By-election: Tory wobbles in true blue Bexley? Tributes to MP Brokenshire, who has died aged 53 Tory campaigners were confident that the party would hold onto Old Bexley and Sidcup. The Tories have held the constituency since it was created and Mr Brokenshire, who had lung cancer, had held the seat for the Conservatives since 2010. At the 2019 general election, he held the south-east London seat with a majority of almost 19,000, taking 64.5% of the vote. It has previously been held by former prime minister Ted Heath. The Conservatives won the seat with a vote share of 51.5%. Labour came second with a 30.9% vote share and Reform UK came third with 6.6%. Labour MP Ellie Reeves said she was "pleased with the result" and seeing the majority reduced. She added: "This is a Conservative stronghold, somewhere that had a 19,000 majority at the last general election and what we've seen tonight is that majority being slashed." Reform UK's leader and candidate for Old Bexley and Sidcup, Richard Tice said in a tweet that this was a "massive result" for his party. He added that they came in third, "with almost as many votes as the Lib Dems & Greens combined".

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-59514800 Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Global has announced plans to take its shares off the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and move its listing to Hong Kong. The firm has come under intense pressure since its US debut in July. Within days of the initial public offering (IPO) Beijing announced a crackdown on technology companies listing overseas. Earlier on Thursday the US market watchdog unveiled tough new rules for Chinese firms that list in America. "Following careful research, the company will immediately start delisting on the New York stock exchange and start preparations for listing in Hong Kong," the company said on its account on Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging network. In a separate English language statement Didi said its board had approved the move, adding: "The company will organise a shareholders meeting to vote on the above matter at an appropriate time in the future, following necessary procedures." At the end of June, Didi - China's answer to Uber - raised $4.4bn (£3.3bn) in its New York IPO. However, trading was muted on the first day as investors weighed concerns over tensions between Washington and Beijing, and issues raised by US regulators over some Chinese firms' financial reports. Within days China's internet regulator ordered online stores not to offer Didi's app, saying it illegally collected users' personal data. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said it was investigating the firm to protect "national security and the public interest". In response Didi said in a statement: "The company will strive to rectify any problems, improve its risk prevention awareness and technological capabilities, protect users' privacy and data security, and continue to provide secure and convenient services to its users." Didi also warned that the removal of its app from Chinese stores would have an adverse impact on its revenues. Like many other Chinese technology companies Didi has also come under pressure from regulators in the US and Europe. On Thursday, the US Securities and Exchange Commission said it had finalised rules that would mean US-listed foreign companies can be delisted if their auditors do not comply with requests for information from regulators. The law was passed in 2020 after Chinese regulators repeatedly denied requests from US authorities to inspect the the accounts of Chinese firms that list and trade in the US. Meanwhile in August, a company source told the BBC that it had halted plans to launch in the UK and continental Europe. It had been planning to roll out services in Western Europe, including major British cities. Japan's SoftBank is Didi's largest single investor with a stake of more than 20%. It is also backed by Chinese technology giants Alibaba and Tencent. Uber also owns a stake in the firm as a result of Didi taking over Uber China in 2016. Didi Global shares have lost more than 40% of their value since their US market debut. From Alibaba to Tencent, Chinese technology companies have been under scrutiny at home and abroad. The country's ride-hailing giant Didi has been at odds with Chinese regulators for months. It shocked investors when Beijing removed Didi from app stores just a few days after the firm went public on Wall Street in late June, accusing it of violating data security rule. Beijing has also announced rules to protect the rights of the millions of ride-hailing drivers, in a move aimed to underpin the sector's growth. But Chinese companies have also been closely watched by American regulators. Didi said it is preparing to list in Hong Kong, and shareholders of its US listed shares will be able to convert their holdings to those on another stock exchange. The company is also preparing to relaunch its apps in China by the end of the year.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars-second-hand-picks/buy-them-we-do-used-picks-3-december It’s the time of year when ‘leaves on the line’ is a common railway station announcement, but on the UK’s roads you can add branches, mud and standing water to the list as we head into the tail end of 2021. What’s needed is a four-wheel-drive runaround, and we’ve picked some non-SUV options that will make your winter commute a breeze. Audi A4 Allroad 3.0 TDI V6 Sport Quattro, £8699: Our first pick is a rugged variant of Audi’s po[CENSORED]r A4 Avant. The A4 Allroad joined the model range in 2009. It features a 20mm-wider track than the standard A4, with adjustable air suspension, tough-looking exterior bodywork and a higher ground clearance. Although you won’t be clambering over sand dunes or up Ben Nevis in the Allroad, the model did gain a specially configured electronic stability programme to gear it towards rougher terrains. Inside, it’s identical to a standard A4 Avant, including a pet-friendly 490-litre boot with a wipe-clean surface. You can also expect to get cruise control, tri-zone climate control, electric mirrors, parking sensors and roof rails in even an entry-level car. Sport spec brings leather-covered sports seats, too. Engine options were more limited than with the standard A4. Diesels were po[CENSORED]r in the UK, with a choice of 141bhp 2.0-litre TDI, 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI and range-topping 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 units. There was a single petrol engine: the 208bhp 2.0-litre TFSI. We liked the look of this 2012-reg, 3.0-litre V6 in Sport trim for £8699. It’s done 130,000 miles and it might cost more in fuel than a 2.0 TDI, but you should still manage to hit 40mpg and it’ll reach 62mph in just 6.2sec.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/59511709 Lewis Hamilton says he is not comfortable racing in Saudi Arabia this weekend as a result of the country's human rights record. Saudi Arabia is hosting its inaugural race on a new street track in the coastal city of Jeddah, the first in a long-term contract. Hamilton said: "Do I feel comfortable here? I wouldn't say I do. But it's not my choice to be here. The sport has taken a choice to be here. "And whether it's right or wrong, while we are here, it's important we do try to raise awareness." 'You have to be the smarter one' - Hamilton on Verstappen & beating school bullies Verstappen has the points, Hamilton the faster car - F1 title set for thrilling finale F1's decision to race in Saudi Arabia has been criticised by human rights groups. Amnesty International has said Saudi's record is "extremely troubling" and that the race is being used to "sports-wash" the country's reputation. Amnesty's UK chief executive officer, Sacha Deshmukh, said it was "encouraging" to see Hamilton speaking out on human rights. He added that the past three years had seen an "unprecedented human rights crackdown" in the country. "This isn't just about Lewis Hamilton," Deshmukh said. "We're calling on all within Formula 1 - the drivers, their teams, senior executives - to be prepared to speak out about human rights in Saudi Arabia, helping to undo some of the sports-washing effects of this event." Hamilton said he would again be wearing the helmet he wore at the last race in Qatar, which is painted with the rainbow flag in support of LGBTQ+ rights. He described the situation for LGBTQ+ people in Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is prohibited and punishable by flogging and imprisonment, as "pretty terrifying". And in referring to the decision in 2018 to end the ban on women being able to drive, he said: "There are changes that need to be made. For example, women's rights of being allowed to drive since 2018. It is how they are policed. Are they really [allowed], in effect? Why are there women still in prison from driving many years ago? There is a lot of change that needs to happen and I think our sport needs to do more." Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who has also expressed his concern on human rights issues this season, organised a karting event for women on Thursday in Jeddah. The Aston Martin driver said: "I was thinking of what I can do. In general, we have so much focus on negative examples when it comes to shortcomings of certain countries in regards to human rights and other things." Vettel said he "was trying to pass on some of my experiences in life and on track to do something together to grow their confidence" and said he had been "inspired" by the women who attended the event. He added: "It's true obviously if we look through a western-European lens there are lot of things that should be improved and have to be addressed. But it's also true some things are changing and for those people it makes a big difference. "It's clear some things aren't going the way they should but that's our point of view. It's also probably true that things take time and it's progress." Hamilton heads into the final two races of the season eight points behind title rival Max Verstappen of Red Bull. The Dutchman can clinch the title this weekend if results go his way. But Hamilton said he felt in good shape for the challenges of Jeddah and the final race in Abu Dhabi a week later. He said: "I am more relaxed than I've ever been. I have been around a long time. I remember how it was [with] my first championship, even my second and third... the sleepless nights. "Now I am a lot more sure about myself and have applied myself better than ever before. I can't change the past - all I can do is prepare 100% for what's ahead of me and I am sure I have." Hamilton has won the last two races in Brazil and Qatar to reduce what was a 19-point lead for Verstappen after the Dutchman won last month's Mexican Grand Prix. Hamilton's Mercedes team have said they believe the 36-year-old has found a new level since then, which helped him produce one of his defining performances at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where he won after starting the sprint qualifying session from the back of the grid. Hamilton said: "I don't believe I have gone to another level. Maybe I tapped into something different in Brazil. Maybe I haven't been there before, I don't know. "I definitely have in my career, but I like to think I have been delivering well all year." The key, he said, to their recent performances had been work done by the whole Mercedes team: "How to get more out of the team, and every individual in the team. I like to think that all of us have [found another level], not just me. And that's what's been needed." Verstappen said there would be no change in his approach. "Like I have done all season," he said. "There is no change. It's a new track. We have to learn the track and I just focus on the weekend to try to be as competitive as I can be. "We're very motivated. A track like this creates new and different opportunities. Hopefully it will be an exciting weekend and I hope we are going be competitive but it's a bit too early to say at the moment. On the simulator it's a very fast track so [I'm] looking forward to seeing it in real life." Verstappen said that whether he wins or loses, Red Bull will have had a good season to reduce the large performance advantage Mercedes had last year. "It has just been a great year for us," Verstappen said. "We have had some good moments and it's been more enjoyable. Last year was pretty boring for me. I was pretty much third all the time. It is not how you like to race but it sometimes happens when one team is very dominant. "We really turned it around well this year. We improved the car and to be in it to the end of the season is very impressive from our side. "I will try to keep enjoying myself in the last two races. It doesn't matter where we end up. We have had a really, really good season as a team." A Covid positive at Williams Williams team principal and chief executive officer Jost Capito will not attend the race after testing positive for Covid-19 while still in the UK. The team is carrying stickers on its cars as a tribute to their founder Sir Frank Williams, who died aged 79 on Sunday.

A new season of Tribes of Midgard will start up this month, expanding the Viking game with new mechanics, new gear, new runes – and a fearsome new saga boss to hunt down and destroy before the arrival of Fimbulwinter. Season 2: Serpent Saga kicks off December 14, and when it does, prepare to take to the high seas. Season two introduces new seafaring mechanics to Tribes of Midgard. The free update adds the shipyard, which you’ll find near your village on an ash beach. Once you’ve rebuilt it, you’ll be able to craft boat kits, which you can use to create a range of boats. These will prove to be important in season two, since you’ll be searching for a new saga boss, which developer Norsfell hints is hidden away in a mysterious island lair. While Norsfell hasn’t said so officially, the ‘Serpent Saga’ title for the season suggests rather strongly that you’ll be hunting down Jörmungandr, who is both a massive sea serpent and the middle child of trickster god Loki and Angrboða, the legendary jötunn and mother of monsters. This new saga boss won’t be replacing season one’s boss, Fenrir – in fact, Norsfell says that daring warriors will be able to attempt to take down both saga bosses in a single session. Also new in season two is swimming, which will become a vital skill to have should anything unfortunate happen to one of the boats you’ve built. You can only swim for as long as you’ve got stamina left in your meter, however, so make sure you’ve got another ship or some dry land to climb onto close at hand when you go overboard. The launch of the new season will also mark the kickoff of the seasonal Yulidays event, which runs December 14 – January 3. The event features a list of themed challenges, and you’ll earn new cosmetics, a pet, and “other festive goodies” for participating. Norsfell has also updated the Tribes of Midgard roadmap for the near term. In early 2022, as part of season two, you can expect a new saga boss variant, more new gear to loot, new quests, and more.

German luxury carmaker Piech Automotive's first market-ready electric vehicle model will use a software designed by Germany's Incari which enables it to update its digital dashboard system much quicker than its rivals, both companies said on Wednesday. The software will enable Piech to update the design of its infotainment system and other software components within minutes, 70% faster than its competitors, Incari CEO Osman Dumbuya said. The updating process usually takes weeks and can rack up 5-digit engineering bills, he added. German auto manufacturers are investing heavily in top-end engineers to design competitive software as looming competition from Tesla and software giants like Apple wading into the industry threaten to displace the country's reputation as leaders in technological research and development. "It's about speed over size," said Piech Automotive CEO Toni Piech, who co-founded the firm in 2016, at a showing of the vehicle in Berlin on Wednesday. "Through our partnership with Incari we have succeeded where most large and established manufacturers have so far failed - a smart, software-based collaboration between designers and engineers very early on," he said.

In a nutshell: It’s the start of a new month, and that means an updated Steam Survey. November saw AMD continue its trend of slowly chipping away at Intel’s processor lead. And while the number of people buying new graphics cards remains low, understandably, every one of the Ampere line experienced slight gains. It was also a very good month for Windows 11. In the CPU category, AMD continued to increase its user share. The total number of red processors in survey participants’ computers rose to 31.53% last month, marking a jump of +0.69%, which coincidentally is the same increase we saw between September and October. AMD will no doubt be pleased, especially as Alder Lake launched on November 4, but will the full impact of Intel’s latest chips be felt in December’s results? Moving onto GPUs, there was little change at the top of the chart as the GTX 1060 keeps the top spot it will have occupied for three years as of next month—the last number one card was the GTX 750 Ti. However, the GTX 1650 is catching up thanks to a +0.16% increase. November's survey was another excellent showing for Ampere. All of Nvidia’s most recent cards saw their user shares increase—the RTX 3060 Laptop GPU was the month’s top-performer with +0.41%—even the expensive and elusive RTX 3090 went up slightly (+0.01%). It seems that despite their price and availability issues, people are still managing to buy the latest graphics cards. As for AMD, the Radeon RX 6700 XT (0.20%) remains the only RDNA 2 card with enough share to be included in the main chart. But the Vulkan Systems section shows both the Radeon RX 6900 XT and Radeon RX 6800 XT experiencing small gains, so they could soon reach the required 0.15% to enter the GPU section, assuming the reported price increase doesn't impact sales even more. Elsewhere, Windows 10 experienced a large drop as over 6% of participants moved to Windows 11. Microsoft’s latest OS now has an 8.28% share, having entered the survey only last month with 1.82%. The figures line up with a report from November showing that around 5% of PC users were running Windows 11.
