  1. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-59370521 China has downgraded its diplomatic relations with Lithuania, days after the Baltic state allowed Taiwan to open a de facto embassy there. Lithuania defended its right to have ties with Taiwan, but said it respected the "One China" policy. Taiwan's new office in Lithuania does not equate to official diplomatic relations but could be seen as a sign of growing ties between both places. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, but Taiwan sees itself as independent. The new office bears the name Taiwan rather than "Chinese Taipei", the name used by many foreign nations to avoid offending China. This is the island's first new diplomatic outpost in Europe in 18 years. Taiwan has few allies with whom it has formal ties, due to China's pressure. The One China policy is the diplomatic acknowledgement of China's position that there is only one Chinese government. However, it is distinct from the One China principle, whereby China insists Taiwan is an inalienable part of one China to be reunified one day. China's foreign ministry said the move had "undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and created a "bad precedent internationally". It said it would reduce its diplomatic engagement with the country to the level of charge d'affaires, one rung down from an ambassadorship. Lithuania's prime minister defended her nation's plans for greater engagement with Taiwan - a major supplier of semiconductors, lasers and other high-tech industry. "Our government's programme says Lithuania wants a more intense economic, cultural and scientific relationship with Taiwan," Ingrida Simonyte said, according to Reuters. "[But] I want to emphasise that this step does not mean any conflict or disagreement with the 'One China' policy." The US has also offered its support to Lithuania to withstand Beijing. Lithuania's move could be seen as the latest sign of some central European nations seeking greater relations with Taiwan even amid pressure from Beijing. Last month, China spoke out after a delegation of Taiwanese officials were granted visits to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Taiwan currently has only has formal diplomatic recognition from 15 nations - most of which are small and poor countries in Africa and Latin America. While governments like the US and Japan have fostered extensive commercial ties with Taiwan, they uphold official diplomatic ties with China and recognise its One China policy.
  2. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars-used-car-buying-guides/used-buying-guide-audi-cabriolet Before we get too carried away with the famous fact that Princess Diana had an Audi Cabriolet, it’s worth noting that it was a dealer loan car. Even so, you would think her tenuous connection with the elegant Audi would be enough to secure it a place at today’s table of rising modern classics, but – happily for us – not so. If you’re looking for a classy bargain, then, you’ve just found it. Prices start at about £1000 for project cars, but just £4000 buys you a tidy example and £8000 the very best. Why so? It’s hard to say, especially since the model has so much going for it. It looks super-cool, with its elegant roof-down lines unspoiled by the presence of a roll-over bar (the strengthened windscreen does the job instead). It’s built like a battleship, having a galvanised body that laughs in the face of corrosion and a hood that chortles at the worst weather. There’s a choice of strong and reliable four-cylinder 1.8-litre 20v and 2.0-litre 8v engines, a short-lived 2.3-litre five-pot and two V6s (a 2.6-litre and a 2.8-litre), all driving the front wheels (there was no Quattro version) through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. They’re all fuel-injected, too, with power outputs ranging from 115bhp (2.0) to 174bhp (2.8). The pick of the lineup, the rare 2.3, produces 133bhp. Downsides? Without question, the model lacks the sporty character and image of the equivalent E36 BMW 3 Series Cabriolet and the engines are a little lifeless, although the 2.3 sounds good and pulls strongly. Owing to its solid build quality and additional body strengthening, it’s a heavy car and not the sharpest through corners. It also suffers that old soft-top curse of scuttle shake. Still, you could argue that most of these problems are subjective. The Cabriolet was launched in 1991, based on the B3 Audi 80 that first appeared in 1986. This platform was superseded in 1992 by the longer B4 that underpinned the facelifted 80 and then in 1994 by the all-new B5 platform for the A4. The point is that the Cabriolet soldiered on throughout with its old B3 platform until its retirement in 2000, the reason a simple issue of economics, since a convertible is more expensive to engineer than a conventional car yet sells in lower numbers. It may have been overtaken by newer Audis under the skin, but no matter, because outwardly the Cabriolet remained a looker until its dying day. It took its updated bonnet and rear lights from the stylish B3- generation S2 coupé, with which it also shared its sports suspension. Later, as part of the 1997 facelift, it gained smoother rear bumpers and projection-lens headlights. The Final Edition version of 1999 featured a leather interior, air conditioning and 16in alloys. Whichever version you buy, find a good Cabriolet and snap it up, because its application for membership of the modern classics club is surely soon to be approved.

  7. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-mid-engined-ferrari-daytona-sp3-packs-829bhp-v12 The latest entry into Ferrari’s ultra-exclusive Icona model series is the Daytona SP3, a limited-run mid-engined V12 roadster that pays tribute to one of the company’s best-known motorsport victories. It’s named in reference to the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, at which Ferrari achieved a one-two-three finish with its legendary 330 P3/4, 330 P4 and 412 P racers – a highlight of what Ferrari calls “the golden era of closed wheel racing and an enduring reference point for generations of engineers and designers”. Ferrari will build 599 examples – 100 more units than the Monza duo – priced at €2 million (£1.68m) including taxes. Priority will go to owners of the SP1 and SP2, with deliveries getting underway in late 2022, and unlike those two speedster models – which are not road legal in certain regions due to the lack of a windscreen – Ferrari says the SP3 is street-legal everywhere. The Daytona SP3 is the first road-going Ferrari to feature a mid-mounted 12-cylinder engine since the LaFerrari hybrid hypercar bowed out in 2018, and with the output of the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 boosted to 829bhp and 514lb ft, it’s the most powerful non-electrified model that Maranello has yet produced. Engine upgrades over the 812 Competizione extend to a modified intake and exhaust (for an “astonishing soundtrack”), lightweight titanium conrods, reduced-friction piston pins and a lighter, rebalanced crankshaft. Mated to a quicker-shifting version of the 812 Competizione’s seven-speed automatic gearbox, the V12 promises a “torque curve that rises rapidly” all the way up to its 9500rpm redline, giving a 0-62mph time of 2.85sec and a top speed of 211mph making the Daytona SP3 the joint-fastest Ferrari road car yet. The references to 1960s race cars extend beyond the mechanicals, with the Daytona SP3 having a characteristically aerodynamically optimised design that blends elements of Ferrari’s historic designs with cues from current models. The low-set wraparound windscreen, for example, draws an obvious link to the P3/4, while the “double-crested” front wings nod to sports prototypes like the 512 S, 712 Can-Am and 312 P. Meanwhile, a moving panel in the centre of the front bumper is a tribute to the pop-up headlights that were once po[CENSORED]r on supercars. The side mirrors sit atop the front wings in another retro-inspired flourish that improves both airflow and visibility, while airboxes integrated into the butterfly doors channel air to the side-mounted radiators. At the rear, the Daytona SP3 is strikingly differentiated from other modern Ferraris by a unique stack of ‘blades’ beneath the wraparound light bar, which is said to lend “a look that’s both futuristic and a nod to signatures from Ferrari’s DNA”. Ferrari says the Daytona SP3 is the most aerodynamically efficient road car that it has yet built without the aid of active aerodynamic elements. The retro-futuristic design theme continues inside the cabin, elements of which are modelled on previous race cars but which aims to provide refinement on a par with a typical modern grand tourer. The seats are integrated into the bodyshell, rather than mounted directly on the chassis, as in classic racing prototypes, but Ferrari has aimed to provide a similarly “snug” driving environment.
  8. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-59337603 Early Christmas shopping helped to push up shop sales in October as people spent more on clothing and on toys. Sales rose by 0.8% in October, following no growth in September, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Clothing sales reached their highest level since the start of the pandemic, said the ONS. It also said second-hand stores, like charity shops and auction houses, had seen sales rise. Sales in clothing stores were only 0.5% below pre-pandemic levels, "with some retailers suggesting that early Christmas trading had boosted sales," the ONS said. Items that people were buying or pre-ordering earlier than usual for Christmas this year included toys and clothes, shoes and accessories. "After five months of no growth, retail sales picked up in October," said ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner. "Although sales overall are above pre-pandemic levels, it remains a mixed picture." Fuel sales fell sharply, returning to more normal levels after the fuel supply crisis in September, and food and online sales also dropped. Why is the cost of living going up? Five items that are going up in price and why Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said that retailers were putting in "a gargantuan effort" to make sure they had Christmas stock amid continuing supply chain problems. "Labour shortages throughout the supply chains - from farms to distribution - are pushing up costs and creating some gaps on the shelves," she said. "Nonetheless, retailers are prioritising Christmas essentials, and many have laid out their festive offerings a little earlier to ensure everyone has time to buy treats and decorations before the big day." She said that retailers were hoping demand would be sustained throughout the Christmas period. "However, challenges remain, with higher prices looming and many households facing rising energy bills." Greener and cheaper The jump in sales in non-food stores, which includes second-hand shops, helped to boost October's figures. Robin Osterley, chief executive of the Charity Retail Association, said like-for-like sales across the charity shop sector in October were between 3% and 5% higher than before the Covid pandemic - a "very significant" rise. People's attitudes had been changing towards donating and buying second-hand clothing in particular, he said, in part due to growing environmental awareness. "To chuck it in the bin is not doing anything apart from filling up landfill," he said. "[And] people want to buy from a good cause." There is a growing "backlash to fast fashion", he added, saying that people wanted to buy good quality second-hand clothing "that will last". "We are in a zeitgeist of people wanting to buy second-hand. We see that lasting for a very long time, if not forever," he said. There are also sobering reasons why second-hand sales are booming, Mr Osterley said. Many people are finding their household budgets are being squeezed by redundancy or price rises, he said. "People are coming to charity shops for economic reasons," he said. "They are looking to buy in the most cost effective way. I think inflation is a factor." The cost of living rose again in October with annual inflation running at 4.2%, its highest rate in almost 10 years. Between August and September there was a fall in sales volumes in second-hand goods stores such as charity shops, auction houses and antique shops, but sales of expensive items at auction can make this data volatile, the ONS said. Separate figures from the ONS showed that government borrowing dipped last month as the economy continued to recover and the furlough scheme wound up. Borrowing - the difference between its spending and tax income - stood at £18.8bn in October, £200m less than a year earlier. Despite the fall, the figure still marked the second-highest total for October since monthly records began in 1993. The interest the government pays on what it borrows also jumped because of rising inflation. The ONS said interest payments tripled in October from a year earlier to £5.6bn. The government has spent record amounts on emergency measures during the pandemic, such as the furlough scheme, which was designed to protect wages. That was withdrawn completely on 1 October. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said government support in the pandemic "protected millions of jobs and businesses, but also left us with much higher public debt". He added that Budget measures "will keep debt on a sustainable path in the years to come".
  9. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-59331845 A new type of recyclable meat packaging tray designed by a Swansea University student could save thousands of tonnes in plastic waste. Alaa Alaizoki, who is studying for an engineering doctorate, has created a meat tray without a separate piece of absorbent plastic padding underneath. Mr Alaizoki said the technology could be used in other areas, like nappies. Meat Promotion Wales said consumers wanted to know that food was made in an "environmentally responsible way". About 800,000 tonnes of UK meat packaging plastic waste is produced each year, Between 5% and 8% of this waste comes from the absorbent padding. In partnership with packaging manufacturers Klöckner Pentaplast, the design is already being used by leading UK food suppliers and retailers, including Sainsbury's and Asda. Mr Alaizoki's meat tray is 100% recyclable and allows consumers to look at meat from all angles through clear plastic. 'No way of the juices escaping' He said: "Traditional padding works similarly to nappies or sanitary towels, by drawing in moisture and converting it into a gel which cannot physically leak back out into the meat." He said his design allowed moisture into specially designed wells, but would not let it back out. The packaging can then be washed under a tap, meaning the plastic is chemically and biologically safe to be recycled along with other household items. He said: "You can turn it upside down, shake it, drop it, but the physics of the fluid mean that until it's flushed out there is no way of the juices escaping." The technology has only been patented for use in food packaging, but Mr Alaizoki said it could have many more uses. "Physics is physics, it doesn't matter if it's food packaging or any other product," he said. "This has the potential to be used in nappies and sanitary products, which also currently go straight into landfill, and take thousands of years to break down with the current gel technology." Mr Alaizoki, a Syrian student, said he was pleased to be able to give something back to the country which took him in. 'Ever higher standards' "Swansea has supported my learning, and given me the opportunity for me to fulfil my potential. "I have a wife and child here now, and it feels like home, even though the majority of my family are still back in Syria. "I'm just so glad to have come up with an invention which is going to improve the lives of everyone in my adopted home." Gwyn Howells, chief executive of Hybu Cig Cymru, Meat Promotion Wales said: "Consumers increasingly want to know that the food they buy is produced in as environmentally responsible way as possible. "The lamb and beef sector in Wales is renowned for its non-intensive farming systems which are world leading in terms of sustainability; packaging innovations such as this can only help to deliver ever higher standards throughout the supply chain."

  14. Motorola is gearing up to launch three new smartphones. Some possible details of smartphones codenamed Motorola Milan, Motorola Rogue, and Motorola Austin have surfaced online through official-looking renders. However, the exact timeline of the launch of these smartphones are not yet known. The Milan and Rogue monikers are alleged codenames for the Moto G Stylus (2022) and Moto Edge 30 Ultra, respectively. The marketing name of Motorola Austin is not known yet. Renders show that the Moto G Stylus, as the name suggests, would come with support for a stylus and a dedicated slot as well. 91Mobiles has shared the renders of the aforementioned Motorola smartphones. The first of the three smartphone renders shared by the publication is Moto G Stylus (2022). The smartphone, as per the report, is internally codenamed 'Milan' and carries model number XT2211DL. As mentioned earlier, the smartphone is said to come with support and a dedicated slot for a stylus. Moto G Stylus (2022) should also come preloaded with the Moto Note app. The renders show a Black coloured smartphone with a gradient finish. As for the design, the renders show that Moto G Stylus (2022) would get a flat display with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The display is shown with thin bezels and a thick chin. The right spine of the smartphone is said to get a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button, along with the volume rocker. The Motorola smartphone is shown with a rectangular camera module on the back panel which houses three sensors and a flash. The engraving on the module hints that it may get a 50-megapixel primary sensor. The renders also show a stylus but its not visible. The renders for the second smartphone shared by 91Mobiles is said to be for Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. It is said to have 'Rogue' as its internal codename. Its renders show a triple rear camera, housed in a unique elliptical module along with a flash and a microphone. Moto Edge 30 Ultra seemingly has a metal chassis with glass panels on either side. The right side of the smartphone is said to have a volume rocker and a power button. At the front, the Motorola smartphone is shown with a flat display with a centrally placed hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The rest of the smartphone was not visible in the renders. The final smartphone on the list is the Motorola smartphone internally codenamed as 'Austin.' The retail moniker of the smartphone is not yet revealed. It is said to be a budget or mid-range product, based on its design. Motorola Austin is shown with a triple rear camera setup along with a flash housed in a rectangular module. The engraving on the smartphone suggests it may get a 50-megapixel primary sensor. The flat-display of the smartphone is said to have a centrally placed hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and a significantly thick chin. Motorola Austin is shown with a Blue colour option.
  15. Something to look forward to: At a company event this week, MediaTek confirmed it would demo Wi-Fi 7 at CES next January, becoming one of the first companies to dip its toes into the upcoming standard. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are still pretty new, and consumer adoption of Wi-Fi 7 is a ways off. PC Magazine notes the confirmation came from a slide during a presentation at the MediaTek Summit on Friday. The keynote mentions that Wi-Fi 7 should increase speeds by a factor of 2.4, compared to Wi-Fi 6E, which the IEEE introduced last year. "We are going to participate in Wi-Fi 7 technology," said Associate VP for Product Marketing James Chen. "We want to be the leaders." Chen said that the higher speed applies when using the same number of antennas as Wi-Fi 6E. He also pointed out that Wi-Fi 7 will be better at blocking interference from neighboring networks. Even though MediaTek intends to demo Wi-Fi 7, also known as 802.11be, next year, a paper suggests the IEEE won't finish standards for the technology until 2024. The report also says Wi-Fi 7 could bring speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second. Qualcomm started talking about Wi-Fi 7 back in 2019 before Wi-Fi 6 was even available. According to CNET, the company's vice president of technology, V.K. Jones, said Wi-Fi 7 could reach speeds faster than wired. Jones also said Wi-Fi 7 would be able to use more antennas than Wi-Fi 6, and they won't need to all be bunched up together at one access point. That could help give Wi-Fi 7 a stronger signal across larger spaces. Wi-Fi 7 may even be able to use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously.
  16. As products skyrocket in size and complexity, system tracking issues begin to arise. This time, conventional Excel sheets can no longer counteract software issues. When this happens, using an issue tracking software is a game-changer. Not only did it improve the quality of a software product, but it ensures team productivity at the same time. A question surfaces: what is an issue tracking software? In this article, the benefits of issue tracking tools are outlined and listed for each purpose and function. What is an Issue? Change is a constant characteristic of software development. All project management has the main objective of changing something. For example, a system or its parts need to be upgraded, fixed, or replaced. This aims to provide better functionality, easy access, and lessen operation expenses. However, an issue will likely arise from a system or software. An issue is described as a problem, grievance, or criticism from the use or customer. This issue arises when a user met certain challenges or problems while using a software product. Most of the time, an issue is confused with a bug report in the system, but not all issues are related to bugs. It can be a customer question for a product as well. In relation to this, an Issue Tracking System Software https://hgint.com/why-would-you-want-an-issue-management-software/ is needed to counteract the issue. This time, an issue should be fixed and addressed right away. Luckily, there is an issue tracking software created to fix and track an issue in the system. What is an Issue Tracking Software? There is an old adage in software development that says any program is never truly finished. There is something that needs to be fixed, changed, or added. Ultimately, software is the tool needed to accomplish tasks of fixing and changing a system. Conventionally, companies use spreadsheets to record, maintain, and report issues. With the emergence of technology, issue tracking software has been growing and helping companies address issues in their software product. In simpler words, an issue tracking software is a support tool that addresses customer queries and bug problems. It monitors and updates progress in a company’s software product. Issue tracking software aids busy support team management in managing customer demand and tracking bug problems. Also, an employee who notices a problem in the product system can report it back to the issue tracking software. This makes the job easier which in turn, supports customer service and updates bug problems. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Modern Issue Tracking Software Issue tracking software is especially marked because these are tools designed to support customer service and track bug problems at the same time. Most of the best issue tracking software systems in 2021 has the following features:
  17. Gunfire Reborn had a quiet launch into Steam Early Access back in May 2020, but after a few updates, its combination of Borderlands-style loot shooting and elements of roguelike games drew players in by the tens of thousands. Now it’s finally out for real, and it’s continuing to keep those players coming back. You take control of a hero character with their own special abilities, picking up randomly-generated weapons as you blast your way through randomly-generated levels – either on your own, or in co-up for up to four players. In strict genre terms, this is a roguelite, as you’ll regularly unlock additional options to start new runs in new ways. “V1.0 indicates the end of Early Access and a new beginning,” as the devs explain in the launch announcement. “The current version still needs to be further improved, but we have faith in polishing the game into a better one that will satisfy you all through unceasing tweaks and updates. We will appreciate every piece of feedback and suggestions from you as always and never stop to improve the game.” Gunfire Reborn is currently available on Steam at a 25% launch discount, bringing the price down to $14.99 / £11.61 / €12.59. Now that we’ve had a chance to get acquainted with New World, we know that one of the more unique elements of the game is that the MMO staple of class systems has been done away with. Instead, characters are allowed to grow in a more organic fashion, with players choosing their strengths and quirks using a complex skill tree design. One of the appeals of an MMO is the social aspect, however, so don’t expect to go full lone-ranger when you enter New World for the first time. After a certain point, you’ll be expected to join up with one of three factions – the Covenant, the Syndicate, or the Marauders. Each faction has its own deep-rooted values, along with a long-term goal to secure the future of Aeternum in their favour. Deciding where your loyalties lie means you will be a part of the struggle, in a mutually beneficial arrangement that will aid you in the development of your own story. Choosing between these factions can be a difficult decision, and you’ll want to do your homework given that you’ll be sworn to loyalty for at least 120 days. So what do these three groups want from their struggle, and what are they willing to do to get there? We’ve boiled each faction down to their bare bones, exposing their motivations, beliefs, and methodologies to help you make the best decision. THE COVENANT As the name suggests, this faction relies on spiritual guidance to shape their goals – believing in the redemption of Aeternum through the exorcism of an ancient evil. Acolytes of this close-knit group give themselves up as divinely-instructed hands to perform the dirty work of cleansing the island of undead heretics and corrupted lifeforms. These religious fanatics will stop at nothing to purify the land they believe can once again be redeemed, working to restore Aeternum to its natural state of beauty and grace. If you’re usually more of a paladin or cleric-type character, the Covenant may be your best pick. They will train you in defensive magic and adorn you with unique equipment for every stage of your journey. Reaching the top rank of Adjudicator has considerable perks but getting on the wrong side of the Covenant’s holy wrath may be ill-advised.
  18. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/morgan-appoints-new-electrification-boss-lead-ev-development Morgan has taken a step towards its electrified future with the appointment of Matthew Hole as new chief technical officer and head of electrification. Hole replaces Graham Chapman – who has been promoted to chief operations officer - as CTO and in the newly created role of electrification boss will draw on his experience in previous positions with Drive System Design, Antonov, SAIC, Airbus and Romax. His appointment serves as a firm official acknowledgement from Morgan of future electrified models to come, and indeed the firm says it intends to "fully embrace an electric future". Hole said: "I'm relishing the opportunity to help transition Morgan Motor Company towards an electric future at what is a hugely exciting point in the marque’s 112-year history. "Morgan has a tradition of innovation and has remained true to its core values for generations, and I'm confident that these values can be strengthened as we implement EV technology. "As an engineer, it’s a fascinating challenge that carries a significant weight of responsibility, not least because of the significance of the Morgan brand.” Little is known about the British sports car maker's first electrified models, but CEO Morris emphasised his belief that Morgan EVs should be hand-built, bespoke and "exciting to drive". Morgan's engineers are said to be "hard at work" developing next-generation models. Details are thin on the ground, but we know that an all-new version of the 3 Wheeler is due next year with a three-cylinder Ford engine and other substantial revisions over its predecessor. The new aluminium-intensive CX architecture has underpinned a reinvention of Morgan's core Plus Six and Plus Four roadsters in recent years, replacing the steel architecture the firm had used across its line-up for some 84 years.
  19. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-59342627 Indian PM Narendra Modi has announced the repeal of three controversial farm laws after a year of protests. Thousands of farmers had camped at Delhi's borders since last November and dozens died from heat, cold and Covid. Farmers say the laws will allow the entry of private players in farming and that will hurt their income. Friday's surprise announcement marks a major U-turn as the government had not taken any initiative to talk to farmers in recent months. And Mr Modi's ministers have been steadfastly insisting that the laws were good for farmers and there was no question of taking them back. Farm unions are seeing this as a huge victory. But experts say the upcoming state elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh - both have a huge base of farmers - may have forced the decision. The announcement on Friday morning came on a day Sikhs - the dominant community in Punjab - are celebrating the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. In his nationally-televised address, Mr Modi said the farm laws were meant to strengthen the small farmers. "But despite several attempts to explain the benefits to the farmers, we have failed. On the occasion of Guru Purab, the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws," he added. What did the laws offer? Taken together, they loosened rules around sale, pricing and storage of farm produce - rules that have protected India's farmers from the free market for decades. One of the biggest changes was that farmers were allowed to sell their produce at a market price directly to private players - agricultural businesses, supermarket chains and online grocers. Most Indian farmers currently sell the majority of their produce at government-controlled wholesale markets or mandis at assured floor prices (also known as minimum support price or MSP). The laws allowed private buyers to hoard food like rice, wheat and pulses for future sales, which only government-authorised agents could do earlier. The reforms, at least on paper, gave farmers the option of selling outside of this so-called "mandi system". But the protesters said the laws would weaken the farmers and allow private players to dictate prices and control their fate. They said the MSP was keeping many farmers going and without it, many of them will struggle to survive. They said India's stringent laws around the sale of agricultural produce and high subsidies had protected farmers from market forces for decades and there was no need to change that. But the government argued that it was time to make farming profitable for even small farmers and the new laws were going to achieve that. What has the reaction been? Farmers in Punjab and Haryana are celebrating the news, raising flags of victory and distributing sweets. But they say the fight is not over. "We have no faith in a verbal promise. Unless we see it in writing that the laws have actually been repealed, we will stay here," Raj Singh Chaudhary, a 99-year-old protester, told the BBC's Salman Ravi. Mr Chaudhary is among hundreds of farmers who have been striking at the Delhi-Ghazipur border for a year. His view was echoed by Rakesh Tikait, a prominent farmer leader who said they would call off the protest only after the laws were repealed in the winter session of parliament. Another farmer leader said they needed additional promises from the government around assured prices for their crops to end their protest. The announcement has stunned political observers as well as those who both support and oppose the laws - many tweeted saying it was a huge victory for the farmers and a "major climbdown" for Mr Modi. But some farm leaders and economists who saw merit in the laws have expressed disappointment over their repeal. Anil Ghanwat, head of a farmers' union in western India, said it was an "unfortunate" decision driven by political considerations. Opposition parties welcomed the decision, with Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi calling it "a win against injustice". And West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, took to social media to praise farmers and congratulate them. BJP members said the decision to repeal the laws had nothing to do with the polls and the decision was taken to end the protest. They did not say if there were plans to bring back the laws in another form later. Narendra Modi's decision to repeal the contentious farm laws is, at once, a strategic and political move and a belated admission of the government's haste and high-handedness. The laws had whipped up an unprecedented firestorm of protests in the states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and posed a real challenge to Mr Modi. They had mobilised farmers and civil society in Sikh-majority Punjab and spread to parts of Uttar Pradesh, states which will see key elections early next year. By repealing the laws, Mr Modi hopes to regain the confidence of the farmers in general and Sikhs in particular. It would also boost the BJP's chances in the polls.
  20. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59343650 Days after Austria imposed a lockdown on the unvaccinated, it has announced a full national Covid-19 lockdown starting on Monday. Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said it would last a maximum of 20 days and there would be a legal requirement to get vaccinated from 1 February 2022. He was responding to record case numbers and one of the lowest vaccination levels in Western Europe. Many other European countries are imposing restrictions as cases rise. "We don't want a fifth wave," said Mr Schallenberg after meeting the governors of Austria's nine provinces at a resort in the west of the country. For a long time, there had been a consensus over avoiding mandatory vaccinations, the chancellor said. However, too many people had been incited not to get the jab, because of "too many political forces, flimsy vaccination opponents and fake news", he added. The measures are yet to be finalised. Latest figures show an incidence rate of 990.7 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein said imposing a lockdown was a "last resort". A record 15,809 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, in a po[CENSORED]tion of under nine million. Under the measures, Austrians will be asked to work from home, non-essential shops will close, and schools will remain open for children who require face-to-face learning. They will continue until 12 December, but will be reassessed after 10 days. Neighbouring Germany has seen several days of record infections this week, and Health Minister Jens Spahn has spoken of "a national emergency that requires a combined national effort". German leaders have already agreed to introduce restrictions for unvaccinated people in areas with high hospital admissions. And parliament has backed requirements for people to show Covid passes on buses and trains, and in workplaces. But now in Bavaria, which borders Austria, state premier Markus Söder has gone further, declaring a "de facto lockdown for the unvaccinated". Bars and clubs will close for three weeks and all Christmas markets have been cancelled. Where weekly incidence rates top 1,000 per 100,000 people - restaurants, hotels, sport and culture will also close. Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger has already announced that a "lockdown for the unvaccinated" will start on Monday, and the Czech government is also limiting access to a variety of services. The Netherlands introduced a partial lockdown last weekend. Austria's is the first full lockdown imposed by an EU country this winter. The Europe regional director of the World Health Organization, Hans Kluge, has warned of a hard winter ahead. He blamed insufficient vaccination coverage along with "the easing of preventive measures and the spread of the more transmissible Delta variant". Russia on Friday declared a record number of 1,254 Covid deaths in the past 24 hours, for the third day in a row. Hungary reported its highest level of infections - with 11,289 new cases in a po[CENSORED]tion of 10 million. A third booster jab will be made mandatory for health workers from Saturday, along with masks in most enclosed spaces. Tighter restrictions also come into force in Belgium on Saturday, requiring working from home for four days a week.
