Polar Vortex Map, Updates as Blast of Freezing Cold Weather to Hit U.S. Tucker Carlson: Why the left wants to shut down Fox News for good The Family Handyman logoHow to Clean Glass Shower Doors What's the most common cleaning challenge with glass shower doors? Minerals in hard water, which build up over time to create a milky-white film that's difficult to remove. Another major build-up challenge: Soap scum, the result of hard water mixing with dirt, body oils and soap residues. Read on to find out how to tackle both top problems and make your glass shower doors sparkle again. What You Need to Clean Shower Doors Gather these tools and materials to get your glass shower door sparkling clean every time. Superfine grade #0000 steel wool (no, it won't scratch the glass); A commercial shower cleaner, such as Bio Clean Hard Water Stain Remover, or a DIY shower cleaner (see below for my favorite recipe); A non-scratch scrubby sponge and/or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Bathroom Scrubber; Your favorite glass cleaner; A squeegee; A microfiber cloth — the kind specially made for cleaning glass. Pro Tip: If you don't have a handheld showerhead, invest in an inexpensive portable sprayer for easy rinsing. How to Clean Glass Shower Doors Step 1: Wipe the door with a sheet of dry #0000 steel wool, going from top to bottom in a circular motion. This will physically dislodge mineral build-up and soap scum. Step 2: Spray the door with shower cleaner and wipe with a scrubby sponge. (For extra cleaning power, wet the steel wool and use in place of the scrubby sponge.) Step 3: Rinse the glass, then spray with glass cleaner and squeegee off the glass. Step 4: Finish up by wiping the door with a dry microfiber cloth. Best Homemade Glass Shower Door Cleaner Solution To make this simple but effective shower cleaner, combine 1/8-cup Dawn Platinum Dishwashing Liquid and 1-1/2-cup cleaning vinegar in a 16-oz. spray bottle, then fill with water. Twist on the top and shake to mix. Use as described above in How to Clean Glass Shower Doors. Why It Works: Vinegar cleans by dissolving calcium build-up from hard water, and the dish detergent attacks soap scum. Pro-Recommended Shower Cleaners for Stubborn Stains For extra cleaning power, break out the No. 1 choice of professional house cleaners, a product called Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser, which you can mix with water to create a paste. Or opt for Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner. Apply your choice to the glass with a scrubby sponge, then rinse thoroughly. If all else fails, try using a toilet bowl cleaner to clean glass shower doors. Really! Wear protective eye gear and gloves, and take care not to let any of the cleaner contact the metal directly, as it may discolor it. Squirt the cleaner on a scrubby sponge and apply to every inch of the glass. Then rinse well. If that doesn't do the trick, re-apply the toiled bowl cleaner and let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Then wipe with a Magic Eraser sponge or wet steel wool pad, and rinse well. Is There a Way to Keep Glass Shower Doors Clean? There are several ways to keep glass shower doors clean. Use All Natural Soap. Soaps with natural bases such as shea butter, olive oil and coconut oil will help keep soap scum at bay and are good for your skin, too. Some people skip conventional soap altogether and use dry brushing and cleansing oils instead. Dry the Door. Use a squeegee to wipe the glass door after every shower. Better yet, use a dry microfiber cloth. It only takes a few seconds, but it can save you hours of cleaning over the long run. Try Shower Spray. Use a store-bought daily shower cleaner, or make a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water to help keep glass shower doors clean. A thin layer of Rain-X can help repel water and mineral residues, too. How to Clean Glass Shower Door Tracks Don't forget to clean the shower door tracks. The key tool: A toothbrush! Step One: Use a dry toothbrush on the shower door tracks to loosen and remove debris. Step Two: Spray your glass shower cleaner on the track. Scrub again with the toothbrush, then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn grime, repeat, and allow the cleaner to sit for a few minutes. Or try Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser before brushing and wiping again.

Hear that? The faint murmur of a sax solo, the trundle of a cat-shaped bus, a rippling bassline. If I listen closely, I can't shake the feeling that my life's about to change again. Persona 5 Strikers isn't far off now, and I can't wait to reunite with my high school homies in this hack-and-slash follow up to 2017's endlessly stylish, turn-based JRPG Persona 5. But as the prospect of fist-bumping my boy Ryuji and pruning some flowers with Haru draws near, something deep within me crashes to the surface once again. Persona 5 for PC! Where are you, huh? WHERE ARE YOU Sorry for that outburst. I listened to Beneath the Mask -rain- from Persona 5's excellent soundtrack, and that helped soothe me. But seriously, a Persona 5 PC port seems like a necessary companion to Strikers. As much as it's wonderful that Strikers is coming to PC at all, the fact that I can't embark on the gang's first adventure through Steam - or Epic Games, or whatever your retailer of choice might be - just doesn't feel right. Even Persona 4 Golden is on Steam now. Again, a massive thumbs up from me, but with Strikers on the way, it feels like a misstep not to have Persona 5 in the mix. Maybe I've put it too lightly here; perhaps it's more of a jean-splitting lunge considering how po[CENSORED]r the game remains, and especially with the enhanced and expanded Persona 5 Royal hitting European shelves last year. It feels weird to skip from 4 right onto Strikers. I suppose you could play Persona 5 Strikers without having played Persona 5. To me, though, it would be like gate crashing the Phantom Thieves' house party as a total stranger. Yes, they might be pissed enough to welcome you into their raucous, high-octane state of affairs, but in moments of quiet, when in-jokes and references bounce around the room, you'd feel subtly left out. And trust me, though people will talk about the amazing visuals - from the high-concept psychological dungeons you adventure through, to things as simple as the menu screens - it's in these quiet moments where Persona 5 really shines. I'm someone who reserves tears for beautiful moments. Like, I don't know, all those joyous clips on social media where a man reunites years later with a lion he raised as a cub (still gets me). Persona 5 train.jpg All the other times I've sobbed have been thanks to Persona 5. When the dungeon-crawling stops, and the Phantom Thieves put their masks in their back pockets, you take time to hang with your pals. You learn of their fears and insecurities. You learn what drives them. You laugh over curry together, or sit quietly in each other's company for a bit. Take time to build these relationships and it'll make you stronger in battle. One moment sticks out for me in particular, and that's when I shared a steaming bowl of ramen with Ryuji. Long story short: you've been there for each other since the very, very beginning. It's been a 90+ hour ride - you've seen some shit together. And he's finally feeling... good. Over the soft bounce of Sunset Bridge, he thanks you for staying with him till the bitter end. I still crumple into myself thinking about it. The idea that anyone could miss out on these moments physically pains me. It's a shame that right now the only options for experiencing Persona 5 Strikers at its most meaningful are either to fork out the cash for a PS4/5, or watch a 90 hour livestream while a YouTuber talks over said quiet moments. Of course, this is nothing new in the world of console exclusives, but with Persona 4 Golden making its way onto Steam, and now Strikers too... Persona 5 suddenly doesn't feel like an impossibility. If anything it feels essential

[Software] Clubhouse: the wildly po[CENSORED]r audio chat app
Ale X Erfan posted a topic in Software
Clubhouse, the invitation-only audio chat app, exploded in po[CENSORED]rity during the coronavirus pandemic when people could not get together in person—but now the once niche platform has far higher goals. Launched less than a year ago, Clubhouse—which recently encountered a censorship hiccup in China—is looking to establish itself as the standard-bearer for digital audio. The concept is simple: once you're invited to join, you can start or listen to conversations in digital "rooms," ranging from a major talk by someone famous to a chat within a small group. No posts, no photos, no videos—just audio. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg cropped up on the platform last week, talking about the technology of the future. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed up late last month to talk about the GameStop trading frenzy. But the app was quickly blocked in China, where unfiltered conversations about normally taboo topics, such as democracy protests in Hong Kong and the mass detention of Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang, ran afoul of government censors. The app, available only on Apple, thrives on the concept of FOMO—fear of missing out. If you're not online when a conversation happens, you miss it. "I was very active in April and May," says Sheel Mohnot, a California investor with more than a million Clubhouse followers. "And then, you know, you get busy and other stuff was going on. And it's just hard to make it a priority." "But once again, now, I would say, I'm back on pretty regularly," added Mohnot, who even had a second date on the platform—with two dozen-odd people listening and a psychologist in the background to comment on how it went. Beyond FOMO, Clubhouse—launched in March 2020 in Silicon Valley for the chosen few, but now used by about two million people every week—thrives on its portability. Users can walk their dog or cook dinner while listening to talks on financing a start-up or the current state of American education—or even tune in while playing trivia games. Unlike podcasts, everything is live and users can participate—as long as they are invited to do so by chat moderators. Star-studded user base A Clubhouse chat can be mundane—but it can also be transformed into a must-hear event if someone famous shows up. In addition to Zuckerberg's and Musk's recent appearances, comedian Kevin Hart popped up in a chat last spring. For Musk's appearance with the boss of trading app Robinhood, the maximum capacity of 5,000 people was quickly reached, so secondary overflow "rooms" were opened. "I didn't get in the room. But someone that had gotten into the room was livestreaming on YouTube," said Bobby Thakkar, a managing partner at Ampersand Ventures and an early Clubhouse adopter. In the early days, Thakkar would spend 25 hours a week on Clubhouse, given how little he could get out because of pandemic lockdown measures. "Everyone knew each other" when Clubhouse first launched, Thakkar told AFP. Now, he prefers chat rooms where he's just talking with his friends or about topics related to his business. Mohnot says he's happy that Clubhouse is expanding so quickly. "Think about it like a podcast, and having more listeners. If you have more listeners, it makes you more excited about doing the podcast," he told AFP. Last spring, Mohnot participated in all sorts of conversations, including the public second date. He now hosts two weekly shows—one on advances in financial technology and the other on Indian-American culture. At the outset, Clubhouse was criticized for being elitist, and not allowing enough users, but some of the initial communities—many of which formed around California investors—are nevertheless still influential. Simply put, you have to be part of the club. Audio's big moment For David Bchiri, the US director for the consulting firm Fabernovel, "Clubhouse landed right on time as the platform where people could go vent their thoughts and emotions" about the pandemic and the summer protests on racial injustice. The app now must face the usual challenges in the social media world, from how to monetize its po[CENSORED]rity to how to pay content creators—to how to moderate that content. "We now want to open Clubhouse to the whole world," app founder Paul Davison and Rohan Seth said in late January. Beyond the apparent problems in China, the app is flying high. With the backing of more than 180 investors after a new round of fundraising, Clubhouse is valued at about $1 billion, according to The Information, a publication for tech executives. "The last go-round effectively put up a barrier to anyone trying to buy out the company," Bchiri told AFP, noting that he believes investors are trying to shield Clubhouse from Big Tech. Clubhouse is nevertheless definitely getting Big Tech's attention. Twitter is testing out "Spaces"—audio chat rooms where up to 10 people can talk to an unlimited number of spectators. Facebook is rumored to be looking at a similar offering. "We're in the audio era," says Bchiri. "Our grandchildren will never have keyboards. They won't need to interact with machines in that way. Everything will be done with voice commands or simply by thinking about a task." -

President Biden on Wednesday evening held his first call with Chinese President Xi Jinping since taking office, raising thorny issues including human rights in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. The big picture: Ahead of the call, senior administration officials offered reporters the most detailed portrait to date of Biden’s policies toward China, and how they will build on — and diverge from — Donald Trump’s approach. Driving the news: "President Biden underscored his fundamental concerns about Beijing’s coercive and unfair economic practices, crackdown in Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and increasingly assertive actions in the region, including toward Taiwan," according to a White House readout of the call. The leaders also discussed the pandemic, climate change, nuclear proliferation, and seeking areas of engagement when it serves their countries' mutual interests. Between the lines: A senior administration official told reporters ahead of the call that Biden's approach to his first conversation with Xi as president would be “practical, hard-headed, clear-eyed and rooted in a deep familiarity with his counterpart on the other end of the line.” One key quote, from a White House briefing earlier today about the Biden administration's China policies: “We looked at what the Trump administration did over the last four years and found merit in the basic proposition of an intense strategic competition with China. ... But we found deep problems with the way in which the Trump administration went about that competition and... put us in a weaker position to carry out that competition.” — Senior administration official on a call with reporters The main flaw of Trump's approach, according to the official, was it "depleted core American sources of strength" — its values, domestic political and economic system, alliances and leadership in international institutions. Biden plans to pick up where Trump left off and define much of U.S. foreign policy around competition with China, while attempting to repair those "sources of strength." Breaking it down: The senior administration officials laid out a five-part strategy. The home front. If the U.S. fails to repair its economy, maintain its edge in innovation and "rebuild our industrial base,” the official said, the strategy will be doomed to fail even if the U.S. gets everything else right. Alliances. Across all areas of competition with China, Biden will engage with partners in Europe and Asia, in particular "the Quad" military partnership with Australia, India and Japan. Technology. The official said the administration would immediately begin working with Republicans to build consensus around investments in key industries like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotech and clean energy "to make sure that we’re maintaining our edge." Trade. Biden will work "off the baseline" of Trump's tariffs, though the official said "you can anticipate there will be changes" to tariff policies after a review is complete. Biden will coordinate his trade policies closely with partners, particularly in Europe. Defense. The senior administration official noted that the administration had already run freedom of navigation exercises in South China Sea, transited the Taiwan Strait, and begun naval exercises with regional partners. The official also added that Biden would be unlikely to reduce U.S. troop levels in Asia — something considered by Trump. “We need to stick with this and play the long game," a senior administration official said of Biden's strategy, noting it would "play out over the course of years.” What to watch: A senior administration official on the briefing call noted a “sense of concern” among partners in Asia that the U.S. would be unable or unwilling to play its traditional role in the region, in part because of lingering worries about U.S. reliability after Trump but also because of America’s struggle to contain the pandemic at home. “We’re in a position where we believe if we can get through the next 6 to 8 months we’ll be able to surge forward and continue to play a strong role in the Asia Pacific and also find areas that are consequential and important that we can work with China," the official said. To do so, Biden would need a "vigilant, purposeful, steady approach." The bottom line: Biden's strategy will be driven by an awareness that “the lion’s share of the history of the 21st century is going to be written in the Asia-Pacific," the official said.

The Thursday Inbox recommends Gamish: A Graphic History of Gaming, as a reader asks after the makers of Journey To The Savage Planet. Happy returns Just thought I would let you know my experience with the DualSense controller. My drift issue started about three weeks ago. It was slight at first and got increasingly worse as you can see from the video I put on my YouTube. It’s bad quality but you get the idea. Yesterday I rang PlayStation support UK from 10:30, when the phone lines opened, and waited for about 15 minutes to be connected to Sinead. I explained to her my situation and she was lovely, extremely pleasant. Took us about 10 minutes for me to describe the problem and arrange the return after confirming details. She even stayed on the phone while the email with the return label was sent. Very happy I received Royal Mail Tracked 48. She confirmed my address twice. I asked what the lead time was on repair and she told me that they have to say 21 days but it’s likely to be 10 to 14. I sent it and having the tracking label, just waiting on the return now. JW Creating problems Having read that drift is being reported on DualSense controllers I’m just interested to know if this is something that people have experienced? I’d never heard of drift until Switch and both of my sets of launch Joy-Cons suffered but did get repaired for free. I had an N64 when I was at university and a couple of the controllers were trodden on but they still worked, despite being quite loose. I’m curious if drift is just a consequence of modern hardware having more technical parts. I honestly don’t think Nintendo or Sony would just chuck out a controller if they anticipated any widespread problems with it. John Atkinson GC: It’s exactly that. The more complicated a controller, or any hardware, the more there is to go wrong. The Joy-Cons in particular pack in a ton of features into a very small space. Proof of life So I have finally seen a PlayStation 5 in the flesh, a friend finally managed to get one and so I have now seen it properly and I must say… that is one ugly console. I would go as far to say one of the ugliest – worse than the original Xbox One! Not that it really matters what it looks like but it’s absolutely massive, inelegant, the shiny black plastic looks tacky, and the disc drive looks like it’s been slapped on as an afterthought. It’s a proper eye-sore in their entertainment centre too, it stands out and not in a good way. I think they added the white curved panels to make it look smaller, it didn’t work. Anyhow I look forward to being able to get this ugly beast, but it’s not going to winning any beauty contests. Jay (graffitiheart89 – gamertag/PSN ID) E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk Escape from the savage multinational With Google shutting down their game studios what has happened to Typhoon Studios? Google acquired them after they made and released Journey To The Savage Planet. I’ve been playing it co-op with a friend on Xbox One X and I’ve been following the game since the guy in charge had a column in Edge talking about its development each month. I hope they have not been closed down too. Andrew J. PS. Halcyon 6 Starbase Commander is free on Epic Store from today at 4pm. GC: Sadly they have been shut down, it can only be hoped the team stick together and manage to set up a new studio. Valhalla is not calling Just started playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PlayStation 5, got it release day and I’m I hating it. Before anyone says anything I’ve played Assassin’s Creed from day one and platinumed five of them but for me it’s the worst one by far. In the day it’s beautiful, soon as you go in a room or a cave that’s it, it goes dull. Even when you light the torch. But the worst thing is the fast travel points, there is about 30 all over the map and every mission is 15 minutes away no matter where you go. What’s the point of fast travel if it’s quicker walking there? For me the whole point of Assassin’s Creed was stealth, climbing buildings and dropping on the enemies and hiding them in a bush/haystack. The map is so big it’s getting stupid now and the glitches are bad, they make me laugh. They’re more interested in bring in in-game purchases then fixing everything that’s wrong with it first and out of all the places they pick England as a setting. How boring is that? Hardly any buildings. I think I’ll find something else to play after this one. Unless they stop doing this silly stuff that makes me go, ‘Same rubbish, different name’. David Gold standard I’m slowly working through my backlog and have sworn not to buy another game until I’ve broken the back of it, so let’s see how that goes. A game I picked up in a sale a while back, for about £20, was the Gold Edition of Metro Exodus, as it reviewed well across the board. I hadn’t played the previous games in the series but my understanding was that this would be taken as a standalone entry. I’ll be honest, after the first couple of hours I was a tad disappointed and it came across as just another first person corridor shooter, with some minor outdoor areas. But I’m glad I stuck with it, as the game really gets going when you start your journey away from the initial hub and Moscow into various semi-open world environments. I really liked the way the designers mixed up the linear areas with the more open environments, where you could take your time and approach different tasks and missions in a variety of ways. The pacing of video games can get overlooked for more headline grabbing attributes, such as graphics and gunplay, but for me it’s key and akin to a well-directed and edited film where the sequence of events and how it plays out is at the forefront of the minds of the creators. It looks amazing too, has a working day/night cycle that you can use to your advantage, the guns are great to use and modify (and purposely ramshackle), and the overall ‘feel’ of the game is spot on and reflective of the desperate situation you’re in – which in turn I assume takes its inspiration from the books it’s based on. Game length hits the sweet spot too in terms of not outstaying its welcome but leaving you satisfied with what you had. With all the other top games that have come out in the last couple of years I appreciate this game may have been overlooked by many but I highly recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in the genre. Get past the first couple of hours, get to grips with the mechanics of the weapons modification and resource gathering, and you won’t be disappointed.

Polish video game maker CD Projekt RED, the company behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, said Tuesday hackers had stolen data in a "targeted cyber attack". "An unidentified actor gained unauthorized access to our internal network, collected certain data belonging to CD PROJEKT capital group, and left a ransom note," the company said on Twitter. The game developer said the incident happened on Monday and it had contacted the police. CD Projekt published a copy of the ransom note in which the hackers claimed to have stolen the source codes for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 as well as internal administrative documents. "If we will not come to an agreement, then your source codes will be sold or leaked online," it read, giving the company 48 hours to respond. "Investors will lose trust in your company and the stock will dive even lower." CD Projekt's shares were down 5.2 percent on the Warsaw stock exchange at around 0900 GMT. The company's stock has taken a beating after a series of problems surrounding the release of the much-hyped Cyberpunk 2077 in December. The shares rose again last month after tech billionaire Elon Musk praised its design. The company said it would not "give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor" even though it was aware that data could be released. "We are taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release," it said. "At this time we can confirm that—to our best knowledge—the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our services."

What the heck is a WebP file? It can be hard to keep track of every image format. Most people are familiar enough with JPEG, PNG, and GIF that we don’t even have to write out their full names. But what of High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) files? How about RAW images that seem to have as many different extensions as there are camera manufacturers? And what is a WebP file again? We can answer that last one. Google introduced WebP as “a new image format for the Web” in 2010 with intent to “significantly reduce the byte size of photos on the web, allowing web sites [sic] to load faster than before,” when they relied on image formats “established over a decade ago.” (That's a complaint that seems funny now that WebP itself has been around for 10-plus years.) WebP’s Introduction and Spread Google was the first to support WebP via the Chromium open source project at the heart of its Chrome browser. It took a while for other companies to embrace the format--Apple didn’t officially support WebP in Safari until the release of iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur last year--but now every major browser should be able to view WebP images without any difficulty. WebP’s spread to other software also took a while. Consider a few po[CENSORED]r image editing apps: GIMP added native support for the format in 2018, Paint.NET introduced WebP support in 2019, and Pixelmator started to support the format in 2020. Many people simply couldn’t manage WebP files outside the browser until nearly a decade after Google announced the format. So it's not exactly surprising if you're just encountering the format now. There’s a notable app missing from that list, however, and it’s PhotoShop. The leading tool for creative professionals still doesn’t offer native WebP support; PhotoShop users have to rely on a plugin called WebPShop that Google released in 2019. That shouldn’t be difficult, and many PhotoShop users are no strangers to plugins, but it’s still a blow to WebP’s po[CENSORED]rity. Benefits of WebP We’ve already established that Google created WebP to help image-heavy websites load faster. The format accomplishes that goal by offering 25-34% greater compression than JPEG files, according to one Google study, without sacrificing visual quality. That alone would give website operators a good reason to choose WebP over JPEG, but that’s not all the format has to offer. WebP supports lossy images similar to JPEGs, but it can also be used for lossless images, and support for the alpha channel means it can offer similar transparency to PNGs. The format can also be used to present animations, much like GIFs. Google claims animated WebP files have several advantages over GIFs, too, including 19% (lossless) to 64% (lossy) smaller file sizes. All of this means that in some cases the format offers advantages over existing formats by bringing similar image quality with much smaller file sizes; in others it offers more advanced technology. Google effectively created a triple threat, which means people don’t have to manage multiple image file formats for their websites, especially if they want to prioritize load times. Drawbacks of WebP For years, WebP’s biggest drawback was its limited support. Website operators couldn’t assume that all of their visitors would be able to view images saved using the format, so they had to fall back on the same formats Google was trying to make obsolete. That has become less of a problem as more browsers have added support for the format, however, so WebP should benefit as a result. Another drawback was the hassle it took to manage WebP files in the first place. The lack of native support in po[CENSORED]r apps for the majority of the format’s existence meant people had to create their images, convert them to WebP, and then keep the non-converted version as a backup in case someone visited their website via a browser that didn’t support the format. WebP essentially needed to become po[CENSORED]r before it could become po[CENSORED]r. The problem is that it took nearly a decade for that to happen, and now Google’s already working on the next version of the format, according to a new “libwebp2” repository on the company’s Git server. Could that version take as long to catch on with site operators and software developers as its predecessor? How to Open WebP Files With all that out of the way: The easiest way to open a WebP file is in the browser. That is the format’s intended use case, after all, and it appears to have become increasingly common on po[CENSORED]r websites. (At least according to our frustrated attempts to save an image we found online only to grapple with the same issues we’ve described in the text above.) It’s also easier than ever to work with a WebP file outside the browser. Wikipedia has a list of apps that support the format; we listed some of the more common software above. There’s a good chance you’ll be able to manage WebP files with an up-to-date version of most po[CENSORED]r image editing apps… unless you’re one of the countless people using PhotoShop. PhotoShop users can still work with the format, however, using the WebPShop plug-in. Anyone who simply wants to convert an existing image to WebP can do so using the format’s command-line utility, too, if they prefer. That might not be ideal, but at least it remains an option for people who don’t want to use multiple image editors or fuss around with plug-ins.

Microsoft's shift to Windows-as-a-service (WaaS) for Windows 10 yielded a repetitive, predictable schedule of version release and support expiration dates for the operating system. At least in theory. In reality, Microsoft has rearranged, rejiggered and repositioned Windows 10's support and update practices. Last year, Microsoft monkeyed with 10's content, abandoning two relatively equal upgrades to instead deliver one major refresh and one very minor retread. It has yet to confirm whether it will do the same in 2020, revert to the 2019 scheme or come up with something completely different. As it dodged the question of 2020's format, Microsoft called the service pack-like Windows 10 1909 of several months ago a "pilot" and said it was "closely monitoring feedback and hoping to learn from this type of release to help influence our future plans." What it won't do, at least not yet, is tell its most important customers – enterprises and other large organizations – how to plan for the year. That's just one reason why everyone should be marking the calendar with the critical Windows events. To keep up with Microsoft's ever-shifting schedule,

At BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard revealed the long-awaited Diablo 4, the latest in the series of top-down, demon-obliterating games. Diablo 4 is a sort of return to form for the series, with art and styles that longtime fans will appreciate. Blizzard also stated that the game is a world of gore, occultism, and horror, where victories are never clean or guaranteed, therefore making it a great addition to the franchise. So much is still shrouded in mystery but given what we've seen so far, this could end up being one of the best Xbox RPGs available. Here's everything you need to know about Diablo 4. Jump to: What is Diablo 4? What's the gameplay look like? Diablo 4 takes place in a dark world Classes allow major customization When is the release date? What is Diablo 4? Diablo 4 is an action-RPG and the long-anticipated sequel to Diablo 3, which first released on PC back in 2011 before making its way to consoles a few years later. At BlizzCon 2018, Blizzard confirmed that multiple Diablo titles were in development, one of which was clearly Diablo 4. During BlizzCon 2019, Diablo 4 was officially announced. You can check out the Diablo 4 reveal trailer for a cinematic look at the dark world it takes place in. VPN Deals: Lifetime license for $16, monthly plans at $1 & more Diablo 4 Gameplay and features While Diablo 4 is using a far harsher tone than Diablo 3, the gameplay is still classic top-down action-RPG. There will be friendly towns where you can meet up and trade with other players. There'll also be PvP zones. Three classes have been revealed so far: the Barbarian, Druid and Sorceress. Each class has multiple possible looks, depending on armor and other customization options chosen. There'll be two more classes in the game at launch, though we don't know what they are right now. You can take a look at the first gameplay trailer right here. The archangel Inarius and the demon Lilith Source: Blizzard Entertainment Throughout 2020, Blizzard released quarterly updates showcasing the early design decisions, which continued through December 2020 where the team talked about everything from legendary items to skill trees. Here's a summary of everything else that we know about Diablo 4's gameplay and features so far. The main antagonist is the demon Lilith, daughter of Mephisto (Lord of Hatred), one of the creators of Sanctuary, and Queen of Succubi. She fell in love with the archangel Inarius, which led to the creation of Sanctuary and the Nephalem race, ancestors of humanity. The story takes place a decade after the events of Diablo 3 and the angels in Heaven are not answering humanity's pleas for help. Duriel, one of the Lesser Evils and the Lord of Pain, is returning. As for the other Lesser Evils and the Prime Evils, Blizzard says we'll have to wait to find out. Diablo 4 is using a new custom engine, which allows for better lighting, weather effects, and more. Diablo 4 is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There has been no word on enhancements or version for next-generation consoles, though it seems likely it'll receive special support on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5. Rod Fergusson, former Studio Head of The Coalition, is now head of the Diablo franchise. We've written up a recap of background information that players should know, as well as what we know about the story and lore in Diablo 4 so far. Diablo 4 takes place in a dark world A barbarian faces demons in the sand-swept ruins of Kejhistan in Diablo 4 The swamps of Hawezar are home to dark things in Diablo 4 The harsh desert lands of the Dry Steppes in Diablo 4 A cozy building in the snowy Fractured Peaks of Diablo 4 Overlooking the region of Scosglen in Diablo 4 Source: Blizzard Entertainment Veteran fans of the series will notice that Diablo 4 is taking a much darker tone all around. The art style and mood are grittier, meant to evoke the harshness of the world, like in Diablo II. Bleak tones and Gothic architecture dominate the visuals. The reveal cinematic and the first gameplay trailer further emphasized this harsh, oppressive tone. Blizzard has also released some concept art for the game. Rod Fergusson, formerly Studio Head of The Coalition, is now the head of the Diablo franchise and will no doubt bring his own touch to Diablo 4. Here's what we know about the world of the game specifically. (You can click on one of the images above to enlarge it) Five regions have been shown so far: Scosglen, Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, Hawezar, and Kejhistan. The world is far bigger than any past Diablo games and the overworld is all connected. Beast-like Goatmen, savage werewolves and a new enemy faction, the Drowned, are just some of the horrors lurking in the world. Each region is meant to feel extremely distinct, with its own culture, inhabitants, and unique foes not found elsewhere. Different challenging World Bosses can be found, each of which requires multiple players to defeat. The first World Boss revealed is Ashava. When you use a crowd control ability on a World Boss, it builds a stagger meter. Staggering the boss will hinder them in some way. For example, Ashava's arm blades are shattered, limiting the range of her whirlwind attack. There are PvP areas, where players can fight each other. Trading and Clans are both included, though there aren't many details right now. Hardcore mode is returning. The game is always online, however, you can play by yourself if you choose. If you decide to play in a party, campaign progress is synced to the party leader. Certain areas are campaign-specific, so you'll only be able to interact with other players in these areas after finishing the relevant missions. Dungeons are returning, with differing interiors and exteriors, randomized layouts, special objectives, and more. Dungeons won't have any loading screens. There will also be special endgame dungeons. Blizzard is still fine-tuning different mechanics and elements, including endgame progression. Diablo 4 classes allow major customization Barbarian Legendary gear in Diablo 4 Druid Legendary gear in Diablo 4 Sorceress Legendary gear in Diablo 4 Source: Blizzard Entertainment Classes in Diablo 4 have received several significant improvements. Three classes are being talked about right now, but there will be five classes at launch according to Blizzard. Here's what we know about classes in Diablo 4 so far. The Diablo 4 Skill System is divided into Skills and Passives. Players earn Skill points to purchase Skills in the upper section of the skill tree, while earning Passive Points to spend on the Passives in the lower section of the tree. The Barbarian is all about smashing and slashing with heavy weapons. Barbarian characters can use the Arsenal system to shift between different weapons, allowing them to adapt to different situations. The Sorceress uses Fire, Lightning and Ice magic, but is physically weak. She can use her Ice magic to inflict a Chilling effect that slows, freezes and shatters foes. The Druid commands Earth and Storm magic while shapeshifting into a Werebear or Werewolf. Druids are nature unleashed, with skills like Cataclysm, which can obliterate entire mobs of enemies. There will be mounts like horses, usable by all classes. All classes can earn Skill Points and Talent Trees. Skill Points are used to boost different Skills, while Talent Trees offer extreme boosts to different playstyles in exchange for making a less balanced character. Item categories return, with Normal, Magic, Rare, Legendary/Set, Ancient, and Mythic gear. Ancient gear will be tied to seasons, while Mythic equipment is incredibly powerful, and players will only be able to equip one Mythic item at a time. Runes return with two components: Conditions and Effects. Combining a Condition and an Effect creates a unique Legendary power. Legendary powers are meant to fundamentally change up the gameplay systems. You can see the Druid skill tree here. When will Diablo 4 release? When Diablo 4 was announced, Blizzard stated during a panel at BlizzCon 2019 that Diablo 4 wasn't coming soon. "We are not coming anytime soon, not even Blizzard soon." Activision Blizzard stated in February 2021 not to expect Diablo 4 during 2021, so it looks like this game won't be released until 2022 at the earliest. We might learn more information at BlizzCon 2021.

The family of a Merseyside man who died in a mountain hut in Austria have been tracked down. Dave Ayres, 36, from Birkenhead, died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a ‘tragic accident’, after he didn’t realise ventilation pipes in the hut had been sealed off. Close friends, former colleagues, and even the local Mayor in Brand, Austria, paid tribute to the ‘humorous’, ‘generous’ and ‘warm-hearted’ man who had worked as a ski instructor in the area. Locals couldn’t track down Dave’s family so they decided to hold a memorial service for him but not to bury Dave so that the decision could be left to his family. The accident is believed to have occurred after maintenance workers shut the Austrian mountain hut down for winter by sealing off the ventilation pipes from the stove, last November. It is thought the 36-year-old entered the hut sometime later, lit the stove for warmth and the toxic fumes killed him while he slept. Kai Salinger (left) with his friend Dave Ayers (right) (Image: Rob Hyde) His body was found on Tuesday, January 12, prompting a flood of tributes. Villagers in the Austrian ski village where Dave worked wanted to commission a plaque, a cross on the slopes or something special to honour the ski instructor who had such an impact on the area. Angelika Beck, a close friend and colleague of Dave's, said: "It has been hard to track Dave’s parents, so we will not be burying his body here in Brand for the time being. "But we will make sure he is never ever forgotten and make a memorial to him. "Perhaps a tree dedicated to him in the forest park where he worked in summer, or a plaque, or a cross on the slopes – we are working out the details." However on Thursday evening, Dave’s sister contacted his friends, thanking them for having invited her the memorial, and promising to come to Brand at some point in future. A journalist at The Times also managed to track down his sister and mother and inform them of what happened to Dave. Find your nearest vaccination centre Angelika said: "Dave’s sister wrote to me via Facebook. I couldn’t believe it - but I’m really happy. "She says she could not come to the service because of corona restrictions, but she would like to come to Brand at some point. "We will then show her around – where Dave worked, where he lived. We will introduce her to Dave’s friends here." Mayor Klaus Bitschi also attended the memorial service, held on Friday, February 5, in Brand parish church. He said the news that his family has been found was ‘beautiful’ and he hoped Dave could now ‘return to the bosom of his family.’ Dave was a trained chef and had a degree in tourism and in 2015 he is believed to have travelled between Crete and Brand, where he worked as a ski instructor. He also spent a short time in Thailand before returning to Austria in 2018 and settling in Brand. Dave Ayers worked as a Ski instructor in an Austrian village (Image: Rob Hyde) Simon Meyer, who works as a private ski instructor in Brand and knew Dave from the local ski-slopes, attended the service. He said: "Who would have known that Dave has a mother and a sister. "It is great that they have been found and that they know what happened to him. "Dave was mysterious about his family, so we always kind of just let it and be and didn’t ask as it was clear that he didn’t really want to talk about it. "This left us all not really knowing anything about his family, other than there had been a fall out while they were in Greece. "What is important now though is that his family has been reached, and that they know what happened to him. If we get to meet his family, that would be wonderful." Receive newsletters with the latest news, sport and what's on updates from the Liverpool ECHO by signing up here Dave also worked as a park warden in the forest climbing park for children in the warmer months. Kai Salinger, a colleague at the climbing centre and friend of Dave’s said he was ‘delighted’ that his family had been in touch. He said: "I’m so delighted. It would have been terrible if his family were never found and never heard from him and were left wondering whatever became of him."

Ask someone what antivirus software they use and you’ll probably get a near-religious argument about which one they have installed. Antivirus choices are often about what we trust — or don’t — on our operating system. I’ve seen some Windows users indicate they would rather have a third-party vendor watch over and protect their systems. Others, like me, view antivirus software as less important these days; it matters more that your antivirus vendor can handle windows updating properly and won’t cause issues. Still others rely on Microsoft Defender. It's been around in one form or another since Windows XP. Defender recently had a zero-day issue that was silently fixed. As a result, I instructed many users to check which version of Defender they have installed. (To check: click on Start, then on Settings, then on Update and security, then on Windows Security, then Open windows security. Now, look for the gear (settings) and select About. [ Related: How to protect Windows 10 PCs from ransomware ] There are four lines of information here. The first gives you the Antimalware Client Version number. The second gives you the Engine version. The third gives you the antivirus version number. And the final number is the Antispyware version number. But what does it mean when Defender says its Engine version, Antivirus version and antispyware version is 0.0.0.0? It may mean that you have a third-party antivirus installed; it’s taking over for Defender, which is thus properly shut off. Some people thought their “on demand” antivirus vendor was merely a scan-only tool, with Defender still the main antivirus tool. But if the third-party scanning tool is seen as a real-time antivirus, it will be the operative software on your system. Defender involves more than just checking bad files and downloads. It offers a variety of settings most users don’t check on a regular basis — or even know about. Some are exposed in the GUI. Others rely on third-party developers to deliver additional guidance and understanding. One such option is the ConfigureDefender tool on the GitHub download site. (ConfigureDefender exposes all of the settings you can use via PowerShell or the registry.) ConfigureDefenderConfigureDefender The ConfigureDefender tool. As noted on the ConfigureDefender site, different versions of Windows 10 provide different tools for Defender. All Windows 10 versions include Real-time Monitoring; Behavior Monitoring; scans of all downloaded files and attachments; Reporting Level (MAPS membership level); Average CPU Load while scanning; Automatic Sample Submission; Potentially unwanted application checks (called PUA Protection); a base Cloud Protection Level (Default); and a base Cloud Check Time Limit. With the release of Windows 10 1607, the “block at first sight” setting was introduced. With version 1703, more granular tiers of Cloud Protection Level and Cloud Check Time Limit were added. And starting with 1709, Attack Surface Reduction, Cloud Protection Level (with extended Levels for Windows Pro and Enterprise), Controlled Folder Access and Network Protection showed up. As you scroll through the tool, you’ll notice a section that covers control for Microsoft’s Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) rules. You’ll also note that many of them are disabled. These are among the most overlooked settings in Microsoft Defender. While you will need an Enterprise license to fully expose monitoring across your network, even standalone computers and small businesses can take advantage of these settings and protections. As noted in a recent document, Microsoft Defender Attack Surface Reduction recommendations, there are several settings that should be safe for most environments. [ Got a spare hour? Take this online course and learn how to install and configure Windows 10 with the options you need. ] The recommended settings to enable include: Block untrusted and unsigned processes that run from USB. Block Adobe Reader from creating child processes. Block executable content from email client and webmail. Block JavaScript or VBScript from launching downloaded executable content. Block credential stealing from the Windows local security authority subsystem (lsass.exe). Block Office applications from creating executable content. Turning these settings “on” — meaning they block the action — usually won’t adversely impact even standalone computers. You can use the tool to set these values and review any impact on your system. Most likely you won’t even realize they’re better protecting you. Next, there are settings that should be reviewed for your environment to ensure they don’t interfere with your business or computing needs. These settings are: Block Office applications from injecting code into other processes. Block Win32 API calls from Office Macros. Block all Office applications from creating child processes. Block execution of potentially obfuscated scripts. In particular, in an environment that includes Outlook and Teams a great number of events were registered if the setting of “Block all office applications from creating child processes” was turned on. Again, you can try these and see if you are affected. The settings to watch out for include these: Learn how enterprises are transforming their business and innovating via cloud migration SponsoredPost Sponsored by Lenovo and Intel Learn how enterprises are transforming their business and innovating via cloud migration Data is the battleground for the modern enterprise. With cloud migration, your organisation can transform and become a confidently data-driven, innovative, and agile business. Learn more. Block executable files from running unless they meet a prevalence, age, or trusted list criterion. Use advanced protection against ransomware. Block process creations originating from PSExec and WMI-commands. Block all Office communication applications from creating child processes. These settings should be reviewed to make sure they don’t hinder line-of-business apps and business processes. For example, while “Use advanced protection against ransomware” sounds like a setting everyone would want, in one business where a team had developed internal-use software, it created issues with developer workflows. (This setting specifically scans executable files entering the system to determine whether they are trustworthy. If the files resemble ransomware, this rule blocks them from running.) The setting, “Block process creations originating from PSExec and WMI-commands,” was especially troublesome, according to the authors. Not only did the setting lead to a large number of events in the audit log, it is incompatible with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, as the configuration manager client needs WMI commands to function properly. If you have not looked at the additional settings in Microsoft Defender, download the zip file from github, unzip it and run ConfigureDefender.exe to see how these settings might affect your computing. You might be surprised to find you can add a bit more protection with no impact to your computing experience.

Google Pixel 4a 5G users on Android 11 have been reporting touchscreen issues following the December update, but the latest update has reportedly failed to resolve the issue. While Google had said last month that a fix for the issue will be included in the upcoming software update, users are claiming that the January update has not fixed the bug. The problem has been reported by several users and it seems to be mostly affecting the bottom part of the phone's screen; it is said to become more prominent while using the three-button navigation. Several Google Pixel 4a 5G users on Android 11 have been bringing up the issue on the Google Pixel support page. Google had responded on December 24, 2020, saying that the company was aware of the issue. It had promised a fix in the upcoming software update and also suggested ways to improve the responsiveness of the device. The issue was first reported by Android Police. It now confirms that the January patch does not include a fix for it. Users on the support page have also said the same. Google Camera 8.1 Update Disables Astrophotography on 2 Pixel Phones: Report The touchscreen issue is particularly affecting those who have chosen the three-button navigation. The Google Pixel 4A 5G January update, however, does include some other bug fixes, including a fix for a speaker noise that occurred in certain scenarios. Since the January update did not bring a fix for the touchscreen issue on Google Pixel 4A 5G, it is to be now expected in the February update. In the meantime, Google had suggested that Pixel 4A 5G users can try tapping the center of the button or the side of the button/ icon furthest away from the edge of the display while tapping on icons on the edge of the screen. Users were also advised to try using the tip of their finger or thumb while tapping icons, including the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen. Google said that this could improve touch recognition. The community forum also included suggestions from other Google Pixel 4A 5G users, including reverting back to the November software. The other po[CENSORED]r solution has been to switch from the three-button navigation system to gesture navigation.
