  3. JERUSALEM — The Palestinian prime minister announced the resignation of his government on Monday, paving the way for a shake-up in the Palestinian Authority, which the U.S. hopes will eventually take on a role in postwar Gaza. Many obstacles remain to making a revamped Palestinian Authority a reality. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose forces were driven from Gaza by Hamas in 2007, has made clear that he would like the PA to govern the enclave after the war. But it is deeply unpo[CENSORED]r among Palestinians, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has roundly rejected the idea of putting the authority in charge of the territory. Abbas must still decide whether he accepts the resignations of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh's government. But the move signals a willingness by the Western-backed Palestinian leadership to accept a shake-up that might usher in reforms sought by the United States, as international negotiations ramp up to bring about a cease-fire. The authority, created under interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals in the early 1990s, administers parts of the West Bank but is beset by corruption. "The next stage and its challenges require new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the new reality in the Gaza Strip," Shtayyeh said at a Cabinet meeting. Netanyahu has vowed to destroy the military and governing capabilities of Hamas — which has ruled Gaza since 2007 and staged the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that set off the current war. He has called for Israel to maintain open-ended security control in the territory after the conflict, with Palestinian officials in charge of civilian affairs. The Palestinians have rejected such a limited role and seek an independent state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza — areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Abbas is expected to choose Mohammad Mustafa, chairman of the Palestine Investment Fund, as the next prime minister. Mustafa is a U.S.-educated economist who has held senior positions in the World Bank and served in senior posts in the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian officials say he has a good, longstanding working relationship with American officials. https://www.voanews.com/a/palestinian-pm-submits-government-s-resignation/7502750.html
  4. Palaeontologists* in Egypt have discovered the 43-million-year-old fossil of a whale species with four legs that would have been capable of walking on land and hunting in water. The previously unknown species belongs to the Protecetidae, a group of extinct creatures that were part of an evolutionary* change in which mammals went from being land-dwelling herbivores* to sea-dwelling carnivores* over 10 million years. The 3m-long predator has been named Phiomicetus anubis after the ancient Egyptian god of death, not just for its assumed hunting abilities but also because its skull resembles the god’s jackal* head. https://www.kidsnews.com.au/animals/fossil-of-fourlegged-whale-species-found/news-story/58d7159685d6240289d636449d084448
  5. Shortly after McLaren’s own online presentation, Mercedes posted the first digital renders of the overhauled W15 on their social media channels ahead of an on-track shakedown. GALLERY: Every angle of the new Mercedes W15 challenger Mercedes have joined McLaren on track at Silverstone for some initial running with their new car throughout the day before heading off to Bahrain for pre-season testing next week. The team will be hoping to take a step forwards in 2024 in what will be Lewis Hamilton's final season with the squad prior to his switch to Ferrari in 2025. He will again be joined by George Russell as his team mate, with the Briton entering into his third campaign as a Silver Arrows driver. After a difficult 2022 amid the introduction of the new ground effect era in the sport, Mercedes initially stuck with their car concept entering into 2023. However, when their issues continued into the opening stages of the year, the team started on what they have called a "period of renewal", seeing them embark on a "new direction" for 2024. Despite finishing the 2023 season with P2 in the constructors' championship, world champions Red Bull ended the year with a 451-point advantage. As such, Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledges that there is a "mountain to climb" for Mercedes. "There are no miracles in this sport," Wolff commented. "But our ambition and determination are strong. Since charting this new course, development has progressed well. READ MORE: ‘George is our future’ – Wolff lauds Russell despite challenging 2023 season at Mercedes "We had several items on our priority list for this car. We will soon see if we’ve made the step we’ve aimed for." Wolff added of the struggles faced by the outfit over the past two seasons: "As the saying goes: when it stings, it sticks. I believe the previous two years were necessary for us to readjust, recalibrate and reinvent ourselves in certain areas. "That root-and-branch approach is never easy. But we’ve made progress and look forward to taking the next step with the W15. It won’t be a linear path, but when we stumble, we will get back up and keep climbing." https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.first-look-mercedes-unveil-their-2024-f1-car-ahead-of-silverstone-shakedown.4wCM4N7SXbMDIGtJQTMimM.html
  6. What a weekend it has been in the Six Nations - rounded off with an entertaining eight-try showdown in Cardiff. For France, there is a bit of pride restored after a very shaky start to the tournament. Five tries were enough to see them overtake Italy in the standings and only behind third-placed Scotland on points scored. They take on England next week with the chance to finish second which had looked so unlikely after the dreary displays against Scotland and Italy. Wales are now in a desperate position. All the optimism of their 40-minute displays against Scotland and England and some of the defence against Ireland will count for nothing if they do not win next week. They face a wooden-spoon decider here in six days against an Italy team brimming with confidence after the showings against France and the win over Scotland. So join us again next week for Super Saturday in the Six Nations when everything will be decided. https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/rugby-union/67803863

  8. Rabat - Morocco is set to increase customs duties on e-cigarettes under the new 2024 budget. The import duties would be applicable to disposable electronic cigarettes from 2.5% to 40%, according to the presentation note for this project. The increase aims to apply the same import duty rate to disposable electronic cigarettes as that applied to other electronic cigarettes for the fiscal year 2023, as stated in the note published on the Ministry of Economy and Finance website. The draft budget also proposes to increase the import duty rate for certain consumer products and equipment from 2.5% to 30%. The increase will extend to small electric devices such as razors and electric clippers, hairdryers, hand dryers, irons, microwave ovens, as well as consumer electronics, including smartphones. According to the presentation note, the measure will “strengthen the protection of local production of these products and equipment and promote the establishment of production units in Morocco.” The budget will also see an increase in the import duty rate applicable to several types of hot-rolled and cold-rolled, plated, or coated sheets, reaching 17.5%. The objective is to protect the domestic steel industry at a time when the international market is marked by overproduction, which is exerting downward pressure on import prices. 10. Every year, we turn to a panel of trusted analysts to ask them what they see coming down the road, and ask them to assess their predictions from the previous year. This year we've got all of last year's participants returning: Niko Partners' Lisa Cosmas Hanson, Midia Research's Karol Severin (offering the firm's take alongside Perry Gresham), Kantan Games' Dr. Serkan Toto, and Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls. We've also got one newcomer in Newzoo's lead analyst for games Tom Wijman, who will be assessing 2023 predictions made a year ago in a three-part series on the company's blog. As always, thanks to all our panelists for taking part in our New Year's tradition. Lisa Cosmas Hanson and her team at Niko Partners Lisa Cosmas Hanson Last Year's Predictions Mobile, PC and console games will embrace hybrid monetization – Generally true although advertising has yet to emerge on console. Game related M&A deal value will dip significantly in 2023 – True: There was a sharp decline in deal value. We anticipate imported game titles in Mainland China to receive ISBN licenses in 2023 for the first time since June of 2021 – True: This happened early in the year. Blizzard will re-enter China after it ends its partnership with NetEase in January – False: Although we originally didn't expect the games to re-launch until 2024, so this is now our prediction for this year. VTuber industry to become more intertwined with Japan's games industry - True: Hololive even created a game brand. Korean game rating agency will likely restructure following the scandal of 2022 – True. (Editor's note: The heads of the Game Rating and Administration Committee's management planning, game content management, and self-regulatory support departments resigned after an audit discovered an embezzlement scheme where the organization's funds were diverted to mine Bitcoin.) Blockchain games to decline in Southeast Asia – True. More than ten international game companies will open offices in MENA – False . Esports tournaments will be held in a hybrid online/offline manner – True. Mobile shooters will drive esports growth in 2023 – Half true: Although PUBG Mobile remains king and Valorant Mobile is not a factor yet. 2024 Predictions Asia and MENA to account for over 60% of global PC and mobile games revenue Niko Partners' ongoing market coverage includes Mainland China, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and MENA, which accounted for over half of total global spending on video games. When isolating PC and mobile games, these markets have traditionally accounted for just shy of 60% of global player spending. We believe that growth from all markets, but especially India, Indonesia and Egypt, will push these markets over 60% of worldwide totals in 2024, per Niko's estimates for worldwide as well as our specific market coverage. Out of App Monetization will account for 25% of mobile games spending in Southeast Asia "As pressure continues to build, we expect Apple and Google to make further concessions this year, leading to an increase in revenue generated from... alternate payment channels" Lisa Cosmas Hanson As legislation continues to favor the opening up of walled gardens for mobile platform holders, we see an opportunity for mobile game publishers to generate higher revenues from alternative monetization strategies including out-of-app monetization. As pressure continues to build, we expect Apple and Google to make further concessions this year, leading to an increase in revenue generated from alternative app stores, out-of-app monetization, and other alternate payment channels. A video game acquisition with a value of over $2.5 billion will be announced (a Top Ten deal) There was a sharp decline in the total number and value of video game related mergers and acquisitions in 2023 as macroeconomic headwinds, strategy shifts, and weaker performance in new technology sectors impacted deal-making. Niko Partners expects to see a recovery for video game related M&A in 2024, with at least one deal with a value of over $2.5 billion. This would qualify it as one of the top ten largest video game related M&A deals of all time. We expect the buyer or target company to be based in Asia and MENA. The ratio of female gamers in India and MENA will surpass 40% Niko research shows, when excluding mainland China, 46% of gamers in Asia and MENA are female. However, this drops to 34% when we isolate India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. With increased initiatives for women gamers in these markets, more inclusive games, and a 2x faster growth rate for female gamers compared to male, we project that female gamers will account for a larger share of the gaming po[CENSORED]tion over the next three years. Instant games will reach over one billion MAUs in Asia and MENA Super apps such as TikTok, Facebook and WeChat are placing a larger emphasis on instant gaming through mini games and cloud games. While games on these platforms have traditionally been in the hypercasual genre, we are starting to see players embrace hybrid-casual titles through instant gaming platforms, which monetize through both ads and IAPs. We believe these games will be accessed by over a billion users over the next three years and encourage the conversion of non-paying users to payers. 2024 will be a year of new console hardware announcements 2023 was a strong year for console gaming as hardware supply returned to normal and multiple high quality AAA titles launched following prior delays. Niko Partners expects 2024 to be hardware oriented with a next generation console announced by Nintendo. We also expect mid-generation consoles from PlayStation, as well as a new entrant in the dedicated PC gaming handheld segment. Generative AI will be implemented into games for players Generative AI became the hottest topic of 2023 and many game companies are already utilizing the technology to support professional game development. However, its utilization across this aspect requires a rethink of game design principles, user acceptance, and poses legal concerns. Instead, we believe games in 2024 will primarily use generative AI to enhance user interaction and experience by including new ways to interact with gameplay systems, NPCs and UGC. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/new-hardware-more-layoffs-ai-in-game-dev-analyst-predictions-for-2024
  11. Building on the success of the Ledger Nano S and S Plus, the Ledger Nano X updates the iconic design of Ledger wallets and brings Bluetooth connectivity for crypto management without wires. Connect to your phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop to do your crypto thing at home or on the go. Bluetooth connectivity for desktops is in the works and should become available with a future firmware update. Ledger was the first hardware wallet maker to include a Secure Element chip in its devices. Designed to protect against known attacks and make the device tamper-resistant, this chip safely stores sensitive data. Ledger hardware wallets use the Secure Element to generate and store the private keys that control the assets in your wallet. About the size and shape of a USB thumb drive, the Ledger Nano X is easy to carry. And with battery power and Bluetooth, it’s designed to go anywhere your crypto journey takes you. The wallet pairs with the Ledger Live mobile or desktop application. Send and receive crypto to your hardware wallet using the Ledger Live App. Where the Ledger Nano X and most other mobile-friendly wallets disappoint is in their ability to connect to third-party wallet apps. If you want to connect to MetaMask’s mobile app, for example, there’s currently no way to do so. The companies are working together to build support for Ledger Bluetooth-enabled devices paired with MetaMask. In the interim, Ledger Live provides access to an assortment of built-in dApps, and MetaMask offers Ledger wallet support for its desktop browser extension. https://cryptonews.com/cryptocurrency/best-crypto-hardware-wallets/

There are also some pretty cool-looking games coming out, particularly a pair of very different RPGs at the start and middle of the month: The Thaumaturge, a story-driven turn-based game out of Poland, and Dragon's Dogma 2, Capcom's open world action RPG sequel. More on those games below, along with the other biggest PC games releasing this month and a list of notable events and happenings.
