  1. The UK Prime Minister has urged homeowners and borrowers to "hold their nerve" over rising interest rates aimed at bringing down stubborn inflation. Rishi Sunak told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: "I want people to be reassured that we've got to hold our nerve, stick to the plan and we will get through this." This week the Bank of England raised interest rates to a 15-year high of 5%. Millions of people are facing higher mortgage repayments following the rise. Meanwhile, those who rent could face higher payments or the prospect of squeezed landlords selling their property, according to the National Residential Landlords Association. Mr Sunak continued to back the Bank of England despite some Conservatives saying it has not done enough to bring inflation back to its 2% target. Inflation - which measures the rate at which prices are rising - remained at 8.7% in May despite the Bank raising interest rates 13 times since December 2021. "I can tell you as prime minister, the Bank of England is doing the right thing," Mr Sunak told the BBC. "The Bank of England has my total support. Inflation is the enemy." Five ways to save money on your mortgage Lib Dem leader Ed Davey criticised Mr Sunak's comments as "patronising". He said: "People need help, not a prime minister instructing them to hold their nerve. "Struggling homeowners will be rightly furious after watching an out of touch prime minister who has no idea of the pain caused by rising mortgage rates." Mr Sunak has pledged to halve inflation by the end of the year. But former Treasury Minister Andrea Leadsom accused the Bank of doing "too little, too late". While Karen Ward, a member of chancellor Jeremy Hunt's economic advisory council, said the Bank had "been too hesitant" in its interest rate rises so far and called on it to "create a recession" to bring inflation under control. Mr Sunak said: "I've never said that it's not challenging. I've never said that this isn't going to be a difficult time to get through. But what I want to give people the reassurance and confidence is, that we've got a plan, the plan will work and we will get through this." In recent weeks, banks and building societies have been withdrawing mortgage deals in anticipation of higher interest rates. The average two-year fixed residential mortgage is now 6.19% while the five-year rate is 5.82%. In June last year, those rates were closer to 3%. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66012301
  2. Stunning new video shows a pod of orcas attacking two adult gray whales in California's Monterey Bay, in a rare case of predation. Monterey Bay Whale Watch videographer Evan Brodsky, who captured the dramatic footage March 30 using a drone, counted more than 30 orcas. The attacked whales split up and eventually made it to safety in shallower waters after a 6-hour melee, Brodsky wrote in an Instagram post(opens in new tab). The video, which was posted to Facebook(opens in new tab) April 2, shows the gray whales huddled together as the orcas swoop in from the sides. Monterey Bay Whale Watch said both whales were "badly wounded" during the encounter. Orcas (Orcinus orca), also known as killer whales, are the only major predators(opens in new tab) of gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. But killer whales usually hunt calves rather than adults, opting to "take advantage" of calves that migrate up the coast with their mothers in the first year of their lives, Ari Friedlaender(opens in new tab), a marine mammal ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, told Live Science. And even going after a young whale is no easy feat as the pod must still contend with its protective mother. That makes the newly filmed attack on the adults unusual. Related stories: Killer whales spotted for the first time killing blue whales Still, one attack doesn't necessarily imply a troubling pattern, Friedlaender said. "A single event is really something you don't want to raise too big a flag over," Friedlaender explained. However, if orcas continue to attack adult gray whales, scientists might see the behavior as a sign of an underlying problem, Friedlaender continued. For instance, one potential reason for orcas to continually attack adults is that significantly fewer gray whale calves are available. In that case, the attacks could signify an underlying problem with the gray whale po[CENSORED]tion. While taking on adults is a big challenge, hunger is also a potent motivator. Friedlaender said the gamble to attack two adults was a matter of "risk-reward," meaning the reward of feasting on more whale meat must be weighed against the higher risk of sustaining injury. At the moment, he said there's not enough information to determine whether the orca po[CENSORED]tion is suffering from food deprivation. Should this trend continue, drone footage showing the whales' size and thickness could be a clue to their wellness. He added that orcas have been known to prey on adult blue, fin and humpback whales, all of which can grow to be bigger than grays. Orcas can grow up to 32 feet (8 meters) long and weigh over 12,000 pounds(opens in new tab) (5,400 kilograms), according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries(opens in new tab). An adult gray whale(opens in new tab) can reach up to 49 feet (15 m) long and weigh about 90,000 pounds (40,800 kg). Gray whale newborns are around 15 feet (4.6 m) long and weigh 2,000 pounds (900 kg). Friedlaender said that the whale-watching community will keep an eye out for future oddities. For now, this isolated incident offers an insight into the orcas' hunting prowess and ambition. "It never ceases to inspire a lot of awe for the animals," Friedlaender said. "Killer whales are pretty amazing and there's nothing that's too big for them." https://www.livescience.com/animals/whales/in-rare-attack-30-orcas-badly-wounded-2-adult-gray-whales-in-california
  3. The first model in JLR's new Freelander range will be a tech-led, electrified, full-size SUV that will be launched in the second half of 2026, JLR’s head of China has said. JLR showed the logo for the revived Freelander brand in a recent presentation to investors, when it explained how the company is resetting its China business with joint venture partner Chery. Chery is developing the Freelander electrified range using an in-house "flexible" platform, JLR China head Qing Pan told investors. JLR, meanwhile, is responsible for the design of the new cars. Autocar has learned that the platform will be Chery’s T1X, which is also used by the company’s Jaecoo, Omoda and Chery brands. The first model is set to be a plug-in hybrid with a design that blends chunky off-road visual cues with a Porsche Macan-style coupé shape. The first car will “echo the original spirit of Freelander but brought up to date to appeal to discerning, technologically savvy Chinese consumers,” said Qing. The Freelander range will be launched first in China, with the “potential for global expansion”, according to Qing. The Freelander will give JLR’s joint venture a replacement for China-built models, including the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, which are ending production this year. The Freelander will sit in different market segment from JLR’s imported high-end models in the country, such as the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Defender. JLR has said the Freelander will be sold in a network of its own dedicated Chery-run dealerships. Freelander does not come under the company’s luxury-focused ‘House of Brands’ marketing and sales strategy, which effectively splits Jaguar, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover into as stand-alone brands. However, in the UK and mainland Europe, a Chinese-built Freelander could cannibalise sales of the cheaper models on JLR's new electric EMA platform, such as the upcoming replacements for the Evoque and Discovery Sport. That would make the business case for selling a Freelander in those markets harder to justify. The Land Rover Freelander was originally launched in 1997 in three-door and five-door forms. It was the first Land Rover with a monocoque platform and “pioneered the compact premium SUV”, said Qing. The Freelander lasted for two generations before it was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015. 4. Jordan Henderson has confirmed he is leaving Liverpool after 12 years, before an expected move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. The 33-year-old midfielder looks set for the Saudi Pro League in a deal worth £12m plus add-ons. Posting on his Instagram account, Henderson said: "Just know, I will always be a Red, until the day I die." Henderson captained Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020. Saudi Pro League: Which players have joined this summer The England international also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup during his time on Merseyside. Henderson will link up again with ex-Liverpool captain and former team-mate Steven Gerrard, who is manager of Al-Ettifaq. He flew out with the Liverpool squad to their training camp in Germany earlier in July, although he did not play in either of their pre-season matches after an initial offer of £12m was accepted. The midfielder joined the Reds from Sunderland in a deal worth £20m in June 2011 and made 492 appearances for them, scoring 33 goals and registering 57 assists. Speaking in the video filmed at Anfield, Henderson said that it was hard to leave his boyhood club more than a decade ago but "when Liverpool come knocking, you don't say no". He added: "I can't lie, there have been hard times, really hard times. But when I look back at my career at Liverpool, it will always be the good times that I remember." Henderson highlighted the Champions League final in Madrid in 2019 when they beat Tottenham to secure the club's sixth trophy in the competition as his "favourite night", and said there were "no words" to describe the support during the parade around the city. He called the supporters "the best in the world" adding "there can be no doubt, there is no doubt". Henderson did not address his move to Saudi Arabia in the video. Fans have been posting messages of thanks to Henderson across social media following the release of the video, while Stonewall, the LGBTQ+ charity which organises the Rainbow Laces campaign, has thanked Henderson for his support. However, Henderson has been criticised by some for the move to Saudi Arabia, including Liverpool's LGBT+ fans group Kop Out, who urged him to reconsider. Fellow Reds midfielder Fabinho has also been linked with Saudi club Al-Ittihad, who made a £40m bid for the Brazilian on 15 July, but his move looks to be in jeopardy with negotiations continuing. Liverpool are preparing to travel to Singapore for two pre-season fixtures, against Leicester City on 30 July and Bayern Munich on 2 August. Many big-name players have joined the Saudi Pro League this summer, with former Reds striker Roberto Firmino and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy signing for Al-Ahli. Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has also agreed a £30m deal with the club. Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, have signed former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, ex-Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and Portuguese forward Jota from Celtic. Al-Hilal have brought in Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves from Wolves and Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66319609

In many of her posts on Instagram, the Pyaar Ka Punchnama actor would give not just fitness goals but also some amazing fashion inspo. She curated some comfortable yet classy gym wear one can wear while working out in one of her posts. “Keeping it classy, one gym OOTD at a time,” she captioned her post. In the first picture, she wore a white black lined sports bra and paired it with a deep blue crop jacket. Black cycling shorts and for her hair, she tied them neatly in a tight braid – perfect for a gymming session. This outfit can be super comfortable and chic for all the fitness junkies out there. With a black sports bra along with a black and white striped long jacket, the combination appeals to the eyes. The actor paired it with simple green shorts and white shoes. It is said when in confusion go for black and Sonnalli cannot agree more. The actor went for an all-black outfit in the following picture. She chose a simple black inner and paired it with black cycling shorts. What caught our eyes was a net crop top and a short skirt that the actor wore over it. The outfit looked super casual and classy. Link: https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/fashion/sonnalli-seygall-shares-gym-ootds-8012205/
  6. "The strike hit right in the heart of the city on Palm Sunday," he said in his evening video message. "Only completely deranged scum can do something like this." Moscow has not yet publicly commented on the attack. At least 34 people have been killed and 117 injured, including 15 children, after a Russian attack on the centre of Sumy, according to Ukrainian authorities. Two Iskander-variant ballistic missiles struck at around 10:15 local time (08:15 BST), both hitting the area around Sumy State University and its congress centre. Images and videos of the aftermath show bloodied bodies scattered in the streets around the impact of the missiles. At least two children were killed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said among the injured was a girl born this year, adding that medics were doing "everything they can" to save as many lives as possible. Ukrainian authorities told the BBC that 20 buildings were damaged, including four educational institutions, as well as cafes, shops and five apartment buildings. Ten cars and trams were also hit. Zelensky called for a "tough" response from other nations, adding that "talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and air bombs". "Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging out this war. Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible," he said. The university's congress centre is often used for children's classes, according to BBC Ukrainian, with local residents saying that the space is an "educational hub for the entire city" and "very actively rented out for various courses, clubs, and master classes". Officials in Sumy have told the BBC that the missiles were packed with cluster munitions, which can kill indiscriminately over a wide area. They have caused burning vehicles and bent trees where the deaths seem to have been concentrated. Nataliia, who gave only her first name, had been taking her child and other children to a shelter when the second strike hit her car. "If we hadn't moved to the shelter on time we would have been in the car and we would be dead," she told the BBC. Svitlana Smirnova, 51, told the BBC she had run for shelter when the strike took place, after attending church with her friends on Palm Sunday. "A friend of mine was injured in a bus which was hit here. She is seriously injured, she is in the hospital, was operated on, she is still unconscious. She was riding with her son who was also injured," she said. Sunday's strikes have been widely condemned by world leaders. Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy to Ukraine, said the attack "crosses any line of decency" and was why US President Donald Trump "is working hard to end this war". UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also condemned the attack as "horrific". "President Zelensky has shown his commitment to peace, President Putin must now agree to a full and immediate ceasefire without conditions - as Ukraine has done," he said. French President Emmanuel Macron said the Sumy strikes highlighted the urgent need to impose a ceasefire on Russia. "Everyone knows: this war was initiated by Russia alone. And today, it is clear that Russia alone chooses to continue it - with blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and the diplomatic efforts of President Trump," the French President posted on X. Both Starmer and Macron have been working together on plans for a so-called "coalition of the willing" to enforce any peace deal in Ukraine. The attack comes after US envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Friday. The Kremlin said the meeting lasted more than four hours and focused on "aspects of a Ukrainian settlement". The meeting, Witkoff's third with Putin this year, was described by Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev as "productive". Click

  10. The OnePlus Nord 5, the company's latest mid-range smartphone, has arrived as the successor to the OnePlus Nord 4, which was introduced a year ago. This handset brings some notable improvements over its predecessor, including a more capable Snapdragon 8 series chipset and slightly better cameras. However, the mid-range segment is extremely competitive, especially around the Rs. 30,000 mark, with noteworthy rivals like the Poco F7, Motorola Edge 60 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A36 5G, iQOO Neo 10R, and the Nothing Phone 3a Pro. Priced at Rs. 31,999 for the base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the OnePlus Nord 5 is also available with 12GB of RAM in 256GB and 512GB storage variants, which cost Rs. 34,999 and Rs. 37,999, respectively. In this review, let's look at whether the handset is worth its asking price or whether it falls short of my expectations. OnePlus Nord 5 Design: Goodbye Alert Slider, Hello Plus Key Dimensions - 163.4 x 77 x 8.1 mm Weight - 211g Colours - Dry Ice, Marble Sands (Featured in this review), Phantom Grey The OnePlus 13s that arrived last month is no longer the only handset from the company to feature the new Plus Key. This new button, located on the left edge of the phone, replaces OnePlus' alert slider, and it has its own advantages and disadvantages. You can remap it to perform various functions, including launching the Plus Mind feature, which we covered in our OnePlus 13s review. However, it's also easy to invoke the Plus Key, if it's facing downwards while you're playing games. While its predecessor featured an aluminium chassis (that we really liked), the OnePlus Nord 5 has a glass rear panel with plastic edges, and the Marble Sands finish that the company sent us for this review looks rather nice. It's a little slippery to hold, so I used the TPU cover that ships with the phone to keep it protected. The phone has a 6.83-inch screen, and it occasionally requires both hands to use (I have considerably large hands). Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Review: All Premium, Just Not Pro The OnePlus Nord 5 features a 6,800mAh battery, but you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the phone, which doesn't feel too heavy. Both the power and volume rocker were easy to reach with my thumb, but the Plus Key is out of reach when using the phone with one hand. The top of the phone has an infrared transmitter that can control various appliances, while the bottom edge houses a speaker, the SIM tray, and a USB Type-C port. 11. Microsoft is supposedly thinking about introducing some kind of AI-powered wallpaper to Windows 11 (not for the first time, I might add). Well-known purveyor of Microsoft-related gossip, PhantomOfEarth, recently posted on X to inform us of the work which is seemingly underway to produce 'dynamic' backgrounds for Windows 11. Microsoft is working on AI desktop background stuff yet again, this time around:"Dynamic background""Your background will automatically update based on your selections"June 23, 2025 What kind of dynamic backgrounds are planned, exactly? Well, that's not clear, and we aren't given any details as to the precise nature of this feature, except that the wallpaper will "automatically update based on your selections". This info was dug up from recent preview builds of Windows 11, and Windows Latest highlighted the above post on X, observing that it attempted to uncover toggles for the mentioned options, but couldn't. So, it looks like it's still very early days for the potential capability. We must be particularly wary here, because Microsoft has worked on dynamic (also known as 'live') wallpapers in the past, and then scrapped the idea. Indeed, the concept of AI-powered backgrounds for Windows 11 has been floating around for a long time. You may even recall that components for live wallpapers were present in Windows 11 23H2, hidden under the hood, for some time, before they were stripped out in 24H2, as Microsoft obviously thought better of the idea. Which I felt was rather a shame, as some of these concepts looked very smart (you can see one of them in the above image). What we have here is a far more nebulous rumor, hence the need for more than the usual helping of caution. That said, Microsoft has been busy trying to jam more and more AI into Windows 11, and to me, this seems like an obvious enough area to grace with AI, having it bring some extra fanciness to your backgrounds (if you want that). By which I mean not just fancy dynamic wallpapers in terms of animated elements, or parallax kind of effects - which may well be part of the plan - but also having AI perform nifty tricks such as changing the appearance of a wallpaper based on the time of day, for example. (Like the forest wallpaper in macOS Sequoia, where the lighting changes throughout the day). We're told the background will update based on 'selections' you make, so there could be various options to turn on (or off), or perhaps various background themes to select from. With AI in the mix, I'm guessing that if this is the path Microsoft is intent on travelling down with wallpapers, we may get suggested backgrounds eventually based on your habits within Windows (if you allow the AI access to that data, of course). All this remains to be seen, though, and even if this rumor is correct as of now, Microsoft may yet think better of the idea down the line, as it's done in the past. The obvious drawback with more elaborate ideas for wallpapers is the increased drain on system resources compared to static backgrounds, which will be a particular area of concern for lesser-spec PCs. On those machines, though, you can simply not use dynamic wallpapers. 13. I seriously doubt you're going to be shocked by this information but, almost a full month later, Rematch players are still bent out of shape over passes. Or, rather, they're crashing out about players not passing. Dip into the game's subreddit, and you'll see 'pass, damnit!' posts cropping up so often, you could set your watch to them. Here's a post to the tune of nearly 800 upvotes wherein one poor soul goes on a 621-word rant just—absolutely tearing into the fools in their routine ranked queue. "Honestly, not trying to do anything with this post. I know people won't change because I made a Reddit post; this is just a rant, because, let's face it, none of the dicks this is aimed at will even give a shit, but also, [CENSORED] you guys because you [CENSORED] suck. "I've seen so many technically good players who can pull off good dribbles, rainbow flicks, tackles, shots, and even passes (when they want to) but who also lack any sort of actual functioning brain that strings all that shit together. Most importantly, you're all just a bunch of selfish wankers who would rather spend 6 minutes blade shotting, giving away possession, and generally being the most self-absorbed pricks in the entire world." I'll cut them off there, because it goes on like that for a while, but they're certainly not the only one. Here's a less elegantly worded rant from a different player: "[CENSORED] PASS IT. PASS THE BALL. MATE PASS THE [CENSORED] BALL. PASS IT YOU DIP SHIT. PASS IT TO ANYONE. DON'T [CENSORED] RAINBOW FLICK IT. PASS THE [CENSORED] BALL." It's hard to tell, but I think they might be upset about something. You've even got players coming after hairstyles—specifically, one that's a reference to Meguru Bachira from sports anime Blue Lock who, best I can tell, is ironically known for his passes. "They're like the BMW in traffic. Never pass, spam good job when someone makes an error, dribble as goalkeeper. Is this from a kid's show or something?" Writes the thread's author, to which another player replies: "They all essentially think they are 'him'." So—is Rematch plagued by selfish ball-hogs? I mean, obviously. It's a multiplayer game. But I can't help wondering if some zen is in order here. Don't get me wrong, having grown up on MOBAs, I've had more than my fair share of raging at teammates. But I've recently started adopting the 'you are traffic' mentality. Yes, you're gonna lose Rematch games because your teammates suck and don't pass, but if you're in ranked? Guess what, buddy. You also suck. In recent games, I've started to religiously spam the 'we got this!' emote whenever something remotely bad happens. Did my goalie beef it? We got this. Did a wannabe Bachira hug the ball and immediately lose it? We got this. And you know what? It works. Tilt really is the mindkiller, and whether I'm quietly seething or not, hammering left on my d-pad costs nothing.
