  1. British boxer Anthony Yarde has announced his grandmother has died from coronavirus. She is the second member of his family to die as a result of the pandemic, following his father’s death last Friday. The 28-year-old appealed to people to “just stay home” as he said his grandmother had died on Thursday. “My dad and his mother have passed just days apart,” the light-heavyweight fighter wrote on social media. “It’s serious! People are still going out when they don’t need to. I know there’s a lot of opinions about Covid-19 and I have mine but I just know opinions ain’t worth risking your life and others. Just stay home.” The latest Government figures on Friday showed a further 684 people in the UK have died from coronavirus, bringing the total to 3,605. There are 38,168 confirmed cases. Yarde said his father had been “fit with no health issues”. His promoter Frank Warren wrote on Twitter: “We are extremely sad to learn that Anthony Yarde has now lost his nan to the coronavirus. “We can’t begin to imagine what Anthony and his family are going through and our sincere condolences go out to them. “Please listen to his heartfelt personal plea, stay at home to save lives.” Yarde’s next fight was set to be against fellow Briton Lyndon Arthur on 11 April, but the event has been delayed until 11 July because of the pandemic.
  2. French police have launched a terrorism investigation after two people were killed and five wounded in a knife attack in south-east France. The attacker entered a tobacconist shop in Romans-sur-Isère, near Grenoble, and stabbed the owners and a customer. He then attacked more people at two other shops before being arrested. Prosecutors said the suspect was a Sudanese refugee in his 30s who lived in the town. Two other people have also been arrested, police said. At the time of his arrest on Saturday, the man was "found on his knees on the pavement praying in Arabic", prosecutors said. David Olivier Reverdy, of the National Police Alliance union, said the man had asked police to kill him. Counter-terrorism prosecutors said they had launched an investigation into "murder linked to a terrorist enterprise". The suspect was not previously known to the police or intelligence services, news website France Bleu reported. On a visit to the town, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said: "This morning, a man embarked on a terrorist journey."

  5. Four Brooklyn Nets players, including 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant, have tested positive for coronavirus. A Nets statement did not identify the players, but Durant confirmed to The Athletic that he is among them. The Nets said that three of the players are asymptomatic, while one is showing symptoms of the virus. The Nets last played against the Los Angeles Lakers on 10 March, with the NBA season suspended the following day. A statement from the Nets said: "The organization is currently notifying anyone who has had known contact with the players, including recent opponents, and is working closely with state and local health authorities on reporting. 7. The Women's European Championship - set to be held in England in 2021 - will be moved to the summer of 2022. The tournament was expected to be shifted after the men's European Championship and the Tokyo Olympics were both postponed until 2021 because of the global coronavirus pandemic. Three European teams - England, the Netherlands and Sweden - have already qualified for the Olympics. Moving the Euros to 2022 will avoid two women's tournaments in the same summer. Qualification for the tournament is still ongoing. Scotland are second in Group E, Wales are second in Group C, which also contains Northern Ireland in fourth place, and Republic of Ireland are top of Group I. England women's manager Phil Neville was set to lead what will be a Great British Olympics squad in Tokyo, with the team supplemented by players from the other Home Nations. However, his contract, which would have covered the Olympics and Euros had they taken place as scheduled, will now run out before next year's events take place. The Football Association is yet to say whether Neville will extend his contract beyond next summer. European football's governing body Uefa announced a series of decisions about its competitions on Wednesday following a meeting of its 55 member associations, but it is yet to confirm that Euro 2021 will become Euro 2022. The Danish FA did, however, say on its website that the postponement had been announced during the video conference. There are still decisions to be made about when the tournament will take place, largely because of the Commonwealth Games, which are set to take place in Birmingham from 27 July to 7 August.

There were 884 deaths in the US in 24 hours, a new record, according to Johns Hopkins University, which has tracked virus figures globally. The latest victims include a six-week-old baby. More than 216,000 are now infected, the world's highest figure. Reserves of protective equipment and medical supplies are almost exhausted. This has left the federal government and individual US states competing for safety gear, while the unprecedented demand has led to profiteering, officials in the Department for Homeland Security were quoted by the Washington Post as saying. Follow our latest updates The Trump administration says it can acquire adequate supplies, and has $16bn (£13bn) available to do so. State and local officials have complained about insufficient protective equipment such as masks and gowns as well as ventilators, needed to help keep patients breathing.

  14. People should be "emotionally more open" after the coronavirus pandemic, says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta following his recovery. Arteta, 38, tested positive for the virus on 12 March but has since recovered after self-isolating. "We are in a world here where everything is social media, everything is a WhatsApp text," the Spaniard said. "But how important is touching each other, feeling each other and hugging each other? "I miss that with a lot of the people I love. "We have to be emotionally more open. We have to tell each other what we are feeling." Arteta reported feeling unwell after it was confirmed Evangelos Marinakis - the owner of Greek side Olympiakos, who played Arsenal in the Europa League in February - had coronavirus on 10 March. On Thursday Arteta said he was feeling "completely recovered" and urged people to follow the government's advice on staying at home. "It's one virus that is putting the world aside and it's transforming everything that we prioritise in life. So we have to take that lesson," he told the Arsenal website. "We cannot just in two or three months' time - if we are able to get over this quickly - forget about this, because it's so important." Arsenal players were due to report for training earlier this week after competing a two-week isolation period, but their return has been postponed. Arteta said his main concern was his three children after his wife and their nanny contracted the virus. Arteta self-isolated in a room and a bathroom for two or three days but his wife fell ill shortly afterwards. "I am a very positive person and I try to take the moment to say OK, what can we take from this?" he said. "I haven't had the opportunity to wake up with my kids and dedicate my time and listen to them. "We are in the household together and we are really enjoying those moments as well."

  16. Players and directors at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have agreed to take a temporary pay cuts. Both German giants said the move was to help the other employees at the club financially during the coronavirus crisis. Players at Union Berlin, 11th in the Bundesliga, announced they will go entirely without their wages. Last week, Borussia Monchengladbach's players were the first in the country to offer to forgo wages. Bayern players will take a 20% pay cut, while Dortmund players will "waive part of their salaries". There has been no Bundesliga action since 8 March as the coronavirus outbreak hit sport across the world. The entire first team squad at Union Berlin said they had made the decision to go without their wages due to an "extraordinary and difficult situation". There was no timescale on how long they would be without pay. "The first-team football department has agreed to waive their salaries," the club said in a statement on Wednesday. "The club's managers and employees have also agreed to part-time working arrangements, which will also result in salary cuts. At the same time, we are pulling together to prepare for a full-time resumption of Bundesliga operations at any time." Last week, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski and his wife Anna contributed 1m euros (£920,000) to fight the disease. Team-mates Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich also set up a fund called "We Kick Corona" to combat the pandemic and contributed 1m euros between them. On Wednesday, German authorities announced there had been 31,554 cases of coronavirus in the country and 149 deaths.
