Kotlin continues to grow in po[CENSORED]rity among Java developers, a new report from Snyk revealed. In its annual JVM ecosystem report it found that Kotlin is now the second most po[CENSORED]r JVM language. Java still holds a large majority, with 86.9% of developers saying they use it as their main programming language for building JVM applications, compared to 5.5% with Kotlin. Kotlin overcame both Scala and Clojure to obtain the number two spot, which were at 2.6% and 2.9%, respectively. Snyk isn’t surprised by the surge in Kotlin adoption, due to how seamlessly it integrates with Java. In addition, the company explained that adoption of Kotlin in frameworks, such as Spring Boot, makes it easier to build production-grade systems. The report also noted that Kotlin is influencing Java. Po[CENSORED]tion innovations in Kotlin often find themselves flowing back into Java, Snyk explained. “Newer Java versions try to integrate concepts that are po[CENSORED]r and loved in languages like Kotlin. It is interesting to see how this influences the future adoption of different JVM languages,” Snyk wrote in a post. Of those 13% that don’t use Java as their main language, a majority of them (70%) still use Java in some capacity. Only 4% responded saying they don’t use Java at all when building JVM applications. Another thing that Snyk looked at was the impact of Java modules. The module system was something that was introduced in Java 9. According to Snyk, only 7% of survey respondents were currently using the module system. Sixty-four percent of respondents said they’re not currently using the module system, and 29% said they plan on using it. Another interesting finding from the report is that Java 8, which was released in 2014, is the most po[CENSORED]r version of Java, by a significant proportion. Sixty-four percent of developers are still using Java 8 and 25% are using Java 11. All other versions of Java had less than 5% usage. Fifty-one percent of those still on Java 8 explained that their setup is working just fine, and so they don’t feel the need to change it. Other reasons for staying put include high migration costs (32%), the inability to get the business to agree to migration (30%), and that there are no features from later versions that are needed (27%). In addition, Snyk found that 36% of developers switched from Oracle JDK to an OpenJDK distribution in the past year. Only 34% of developers are currently using Oracle JDK, compared to 70% last year. The survey results were based on the responses of more than 2,000 developers in the second half of 2019.

In a report from VideoCardz, GIGABYTE has seemingly confirmed the existence of both AMD's long-anticipated budget-oriented B550 chipset, as well as Intel's upcoming Z490 & W480 motherboards that are to be paired up with Intel's Comet Lake CPUs. AMD B550 Finally Arrives - Affordable PCIe 4.0 for the Mid-Range GIGABYTE has given us a taste of what is to be expected with the launch of AMD's B550 chipset. GIGABYTE has registered a total of twelve motherboards with the EEC with six being AORUS-branded boards, and two being GAMING-branded. The B550 chipset is intended for the mid-range segment and will bring PCIe 4.0 capabilities to the masses at a significantly lower price point than the upscale X570 chipset. B550 AORUS MASTER B550 AORUS ELITE B550 AORUS PRO AC B550 AORUS PRO AX B550 AORUS PRO B550M AORUS PRO B550 GAMING X B550M GAMING B550M DS3H B550M H B550M S2H GIGABYTE Registers Additional Motherboards with EEC - New 'VISION' Brand, Likely Workstation-Oriented GIGABYTE's lineup of Z490 motherboards has also grown, along with the addition of a sole W480 chipset addition. Three of the four additions to the lineup have been listed under the 'VISION' branding, something completely new. It is unclear as to where in GIGABYTE's lineup the VISION series will fall, but speculation suggests below AORUS and DESIGNARE, GIGABYTE's high-end workstation brand, and is geared toward workstation users, hence the inclusion of both the W480, a workstation-oriented chipset and Z490 chipset under the VISION branding. As of this time, GIGABYTE's upcoming motherboard lineup will include the following: Z490 AORUS EXTREME WATERFORCE Z490 AORUS EXTREME Z490 AORUS ELITE Z490 AORUS ULTRA-GU Z490I AORUS ULTRA Z490 AORUS PRO Z490 DESIGNARE Z490 GAMING X Z490 VISION G Z490 VISION D W480 VISION D Z490 UD Z490 D Z490M DS3H Z490 UD AC Both the Z490 and W480 chipsets will be launched alongside Intel's Comet Lake CPUs and, unfortunately, for current Intel users anticipating an easy upgrade by dropping a brand new Comet Lake CPU into their current motherboard, maybe discouraged due to a change to a revised socket, LGA 1200.

Chinese media have changed a report that a doctor who blew the whistle on the coronavirus outbreak has died of the infection. The state-run Global Times said Li Wenliang had died in Wuhan but later reported he was instead critically ill. The People's Daily had earlier sent out a tweet saying Dr Li's death had sparked "national grief". Dr Li warned fellow medics about the virus on 30 December but was told by police to stop making "false comments". The coronavirus has now killed more than 560 people and infected 28,000 in China. It causes severe acute respiratory infection and symptoms usually start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. Most people infected are likely to fully recover - just as they would from a flu. How did the confusion occur? Global Times and other Chinese media initially sent out reports that Dr Li, 34, had died from coronavirus. It was then picked up by international news organisations. The World Health Organization sent out a tweet expressing sorrow at his death. But Global Times then carried a report from Wuhan Central Hospital saying that Dr Li's heart had stopped beating at 21:30 local time (13:30 GMT) and he was given resuscitation treatment. Dr Li was currently in a critical condition, it said. The news of his death had triggered a huge wave of po[CENSORED]r reaction on Weibo - China's equivalent of Twitter. Most of the coronavirus victims have been over the age of 60 or have suffered from other medical conditions, according to China's health authorities. Dr Li's medical history is not known. What is Li Wenliang's story? Dr Li, an ophthalmologist, posted his story on the Weibo site from a hospital bed a month after sending out his initial warning. Dr Li had noticed seven cases of a virus that he thought looked like Sars - the virus that led to a global epidemic in 2003. On 30 December he sent a message to fellow doctors in a chat group warning them to wear protective clothing to avoid infection. Four days later he was summoned to the Public Security Bureau where he was told to sign a letter. In the letter he was accused of "making false comments" that had "severely disturbed the social order". He was one of eight people who police said were being investigated for "spreading rumours" Local authorities later apologised to Dr Li.

All too often, Monday mornings can pass by in a flurry of unproductive activity dotted with periods of hazy reflection on a joyous weekend now forever behind us. By the time we pull ourselves together to consider a workable schedule and kick-start that can-do attitude, it’s practically Tuesday already. And, you know, that’s half the week gone. For a more effective springboard strategy, look to the stars. The big shots of business and technology didn’t get where they are today by stumbling into the office twenty minutes late and spending their Monday mornings propping up the coffee machine. AOL chief Tim Armstrong, for example, is known for rising early to get a head-start on his week – and a 5am reveille can create the opportunity to embrace plenty of other productivity tricks, too. Those first hours of the week may not seem the most obvious time to pin a leash on your dog and take him for a long stroll, but getting up with a couple of hours to spare means plenty of time for pooch. Dog-walking – a form of exercise espoused by Cosmo editor Joanna Coles – is a great way to lower stress levels and free up the creative mind ahead of a hard week’s work. Stepping into the office after stepping out with the dog is likely to result in a flurry of fresh ideas to keep business moving forward. Making time to stay on top of the headlines, tone your body and soul at the gym, or clean the dishes (removing one more nagging worry from your mind) are all excellent ways to prepare for the new week. And don’t forget to fuel up: a slow, considered, healthy breakfast will set you up for the morning, the day, and the whole week ahead. Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson was famous for it – though of course he knew he had to stay powered up all the way through to Saturday afternoon. Whatever the nature of your work, a new week brings with it new opportunities to realign your goals and reboot your attitude. Check out this insightful new infographic for a few more words from the wise on how to maximize that rudest of awakenings – and be sure to have a great week behind you once Friday comes.

In an effort to help software companies better understand how their products and solutions are being used, Flexera has acquired the software usage analytics provider Revulytics. In a recent report from Flexera, the company found that while companies who understand usage are more confident in the value they bring, only 35% companies are able to obtain that usage data. Flexera hopes the addition with Revulytics will provide more insight into the usage of products with compliance data analytics, user behavior and telemetry, and in-app messaging. “Software monetization is more than licensing and enforcement; it’s also about understanding actual product usage. This insight enables product teams to make better, data-driven decisions and gives compliance teams the actionable data they need to generate revenue from unlicensed use,” said Brent Pietrzak, SVP and general manager of Flexera’s Supplier Division. “With the incredible people and products at Revulytics, we are expanding our offering to provide software and technology companies with even more insights to build and implement their digital business models.” Key capabilities Revulytics will bring to Flexera include: Compliance intelligence: the ability to see where pirated versions of software are being used Usage intelligence: insight into feature usage, customer behavior analysis and dashboards with analytics and telemetry. “Revulytics has helped the world’s leading software vendors drive better business outcomes. Our customers are benefiting from the growing value of software usage analytics – from our compliance solutions that directly increase new license revenue to product management solutions that deliver better applications that their customers love.” said Joseph Noonan, President and CEO of Revulytics. “By joining forces with Flexera, the expanded portfolio allows our customers to realize even more value from their IP, improve customer relationships, and grow their business.”

Taiwan's TAITRA, the organizers of Computex, announced this week that the show will proceed as scheduled despite the global outbreak of the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). "In response to the global outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV or Wuhan Pneumonia), the Taiwan government has taken comprehensive measures to protect the health of the public from the global outbreak," a statement posted by TAITRA on February 4rth reads. "All events and activities held by TAITRA for international visitors are conducted in full and stringent compliance with health and safety regulations and there is no danger posed to exhibitions and meeting venues in Taiwan." In 2003, with the outbreak of SARS, event organizers moved Computex to September instead of the usual calendar placement of June. Taiwan had 346 confirmed cases of SARS, whereas with the Coronavirus Taiwan only has 11 confirmed cases as of this week. It's understood that event organizers have informed key stakeholders in Taiwan, such as vendors that would have large booths at the show and be flying in key staff, that a final decision on whether Computex would go ahead as planned will be made in mid-April in conjunction with local health authorities. Options on the table include limiting the scale of the show, or banning vendors and attendees from China. The latter of which is an option being used at TAITRA's upcoming TAIPEI CYCLE trade show, which is expecting about 8000 attendees and 1000 exhibitions -- roughly one fifth the size of Computex by headcount. While Computex, which takes place in June, will go ahead as scheduled many other events in the region have been canceled. In Hong Kong, the Standard Chartered Marathon has been canceled as has the Alibaba Jumpstarter Entrepreneur conference. In Taiwan, the Taipei Game Show has been rescheduled until later this year. Schools remain closed on the island until February 25. In China there are no signs of the virus slowing down. The death toll will soon reach 500, which is far greater than the 349 that died during the 2003 SARS outbreak. New figures from China’s Health Commission on Wednesday showed that 65 people died on Tuesday and that 3,887 more people had been infected. So far, 24,324 people have been infected. The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the next tech trade show scheduled, and the GSMA, its organizer, released a statement saying it will proceed as planned. However, LG and ZTE have already announced that they will be pulling out of the show given fears of the virus spreading. More updates are expected as the show dates for Computex draw closer.

Hong Kong is to impose a mandatory 14-day quarantine on all visitors from mainland China as it battles to prevent the spread of a coronavirus outbreak. The policy comes into effect on Saturday but officials refused to close the border entirely, as demanded by medical staff who have gone on strike. Hong Kong, which has 21 confirmed cases and one fatality, suffered 300 deaths in the Sars outbreak in 2002-03. There are 24,300 confirmed coronavirus cases and 490 deaths on the mainland. Those figures included an additional 4,000 cases and 65 deaths on Tuesday. The virus has spread overseas, with 25 nations confirming a total of 191 cases, although there has so far been only one death, in the Philippines. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a global health emergency. Its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Wednesday appealed for $675m (£520m) to fund a three-month response plan. Meanwhile, at least 10 people on board a cruise ship docked in the Japanese port of Yokohama have tested positive for the virus. The coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory infection and symptoms usually start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. Most people infected are likely to fully recover - just as they would from a flu. What action has Hong Kong taken? Chief Executive Carrie Lam said anyone arriving from the mainland, including foreigners, would be quarantined for 14 days from Saturday, although she did not say how this would be imposed. It is unclear where the quarantines would take place or whether Hong Kong residents could spend the time at home. Tens of thousands of people arrived from the mainland on Tuesday. Ms Lam has not moved to close the border entirely, although thousands of medical staff on Wednesday entered the third day of their strike over the issue and have threatened to escalate their action. Hong Kong will, however, close the Ocean and Kai Tak cruise terminals. Some 3,600 passengers and crew on the World Dream, docked at Kai Tak, are being tested for the virus after three Chinese passengers who were on the ship between 19 and 24 January tested positive after disembarking. Hong Kong remains concerned about a repeat of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) outbreak, although the mortality rate of the new virus is much lower than that of Sars, which was around 9.6%. There have been massive queues for masks which are in short supply and are selling at inflated prices. Separately, the Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific is asking 27,000 staff to take three weeks unpaid leave over the coming months as it deals with the impact of the outbreak. What are the mainland's latest measures? Officials say they have stepped up efforts to control the outbreak, particularly in its epicentre, Hubei province and its capital, Wuhan, where two hospitals have been speedily built and 11 public venues sports transformed into makeshift wards.

A photo of a baby panda tumbling head first off a platform has taken the world by storm. The panda, one of 23 baby bears, was placed on a platform as researchers at China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding prepared to showcase them to world, according to an ABC affiliate site. While the other little bears appear to be snoozing during the photography session, one curious baby panda got a bit ahead of itself. The poor thing is seen toppling over the side of the green platform as a researcher rushes forward. I’m sure the baby is just fine, however, as the platform doesn't seem to be elevated more than a foot or so from the ground. Despite the researcher's rescue attempt, it is clear the panda hit the ground before being caught. While it's slightly heart wrenching, it's also apparent all the babies are being well-cared for and are content with their moment in the spotlight. Photographers zoomed in on the resting babies as they lazily yawned for the camera. The adorable photos are circulating the internet as we all "oh" and "awe" over the tiny bears. Thanks to the Chengdu Research Base's conservation efforts, pandas have been removed from the endangered species list to be named as a vulnerable species instead. The Chengdu Research Base operates the world's largest artificial breeding program that is responsible for the birth of these new pandas seen pictured. While panda numbers are increasing, the species still faces habitat loss and destruction. However bleak the panda's environmental situation may be, their numbers have seen a steady rise in recent years. As you can see, crowds gathered to witness the unveiling of China's latest panda additions as they were proudly displayed to show the Chengdu Research Base's success. I'm sure having one of the baby pandas caught on camera as it tumbled off the stage wasn't in the plans, but all seems to be fine despite the minor mishap. Plus, it gained the babies a worldwide audience as they made their first appearance.
