  2. These newfound bodies could be bread crumbs leading to the mysterious Planet Nine The list of Pluto's neighbors just got considerably longer, potentially boosting scientists' odds of finding the putative Planet Nine. Astronomers have discovered 139 more "minor planets" — small bodies circling the sun that are neither official planets nor comets — in the dark, frigid depths beyond Neptune's orbit, a new study reports. The new additions represent nearly 5% of the current trans-Neptunian object (TNO) tally, which stands at about 3,000, the researchers said. The scientists pored over data gathered by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) during its first four years of operation, from 2013 to 2017. The DES studies the heavens using the 520-megapixel Dark Energy Camera, which is mounted on the Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. As the project's name implies, the main goal of the DES involves shedding light on dark energy, the mysterious force thought to be behind the universe's accelerating expansion. But the high-resolution DES imagery has a number of other applications, including the discovery of small objects in our own solar system, as the new study shows. The researchers started out with 7 billion DES-detected dots, which they whittled down to 22 million "transients" after ruling out objects such as galaxies that appeared in roughly the same spot on multiple nights. Those 22 million were further culled to 400 TNO candidates, whose movements the team was able to track over at least six different nights. After months of vetting by analysis and observation, the team verified 316 of the small bodies as bona fide TNOs. These cataloged objects lie between 30 and 90 astronomical units (AU) from the sun, and 139 of them are new to science, the researchers said. (1 AU is the Earth-sun distance, which is about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.) The techniques the researchers developed could aid future TNO searches, including those potentially conducted by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which is scheduled to come online in the early 2020s, study team members said. "Many of the programs we've developed can be easily applied to any other large datasets, such as what the Rubin Observatory will produce," lead author Pedro Bernardinelli, a physics and astronomy graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, said in a statement. The team members are also now running their analyses on the DES' entire six-year data set, an effort that could yield an additional 500 or so newfound TNOs. (The DES' initial run wrapped up in 2019.) Such new additions could end up being bread crumbs that lead to Planet Nine, the hypothesized world that some scientists think lurks undiscovered in the far outer solar system, hundreds of AU from the sun. Planet Nine's existence, after all, is inferred from weird clustering in the orbits of certain TNOs. "There are lots of ideas about giant planets that used to be in the solar system and aren't there anymore, or planets that are far away and massive but too faint for us to have noticed yet," study co-author Gary Bernstein, an astronomy and astrophysics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said in the same statement. "Making the catalog is the fun discovery part," Bernstein added. "Then, when you create this resource, you can compare what you did find to what somebody's theory said you should find."

  4. Updating the software on your laptop is an easy and effective way to make sure your system runs smoothly. When you update Windows 10, your PC will have the latest features, bug fixes, and, most important, security patches. Fortunately, Windows will periodically check for the latest system updates and install them automatically. All you need to do is restart your computer to ensure the updates finish installing (to pause updates for up to 35 days, check out this guide). As convenient as automatic updates are, there are times when you'll want to manually check for updates, like when an important security patch is rolling out or if you've encountered a major bug. If you're currently running Windows 7, then read our guide to prepare for when the operating system reaches its end of life phase. Once your laptop is updated, make sure to properly set it up and beginners can read our guide on how to use Windows 10. Here are a few simple steps to manually check for Windows 10 updates. 1. Select the Start (Windows) button from the bottom-left corner. 2. Go to settings (gear icon). 3. Select the Update and Security icon 4. Choose Windows Update tab in the sidebar (Circular arrows) 5. Select Check for updates. If there is an available update, it will begin downloading automatically. If you don't see an update, don't worry, this page will tell you if your hardware is currently incompatible. You may see this message: "The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time." If there's a more convenient time to restart your laptop, Windows 10 will let you reschedule. Doing so is pretty straightforward — just follow these simple instructions. (Note, your system will not have the latest updates until it's been restarted.) How to Schedule a Windows 10 Update 1. From the Windows Update settings page (Step 4 from above), select "Schedule the restart" found next to "Restart now." 2. You will then be taken to a scheduling page. From there, move the Schedule a Time slider to the right (the on position). 3. The grayed-out Pick a time and Pick a day options will then be available to select. Use the time ticker and the date drop-down to choose when to restart your laptop. .
  5. As the number of infections and deaths from the novel coronavirus rise drastically, governments, schools, and companies around the world are instituting more drastic measures to rein in the virus’s spread. The moves are causing companies to accelerate an already growing trend of working from home that companies had mentioned last month but that’s now playing out in their increased use of workplace software. Quarantines, cancellations, and work-from-home policies have greatly driven up the demand for video and chat software that allows people to try and maintain some semblance of business as usual. In response, workplace software companies like Zoom, Microsoft, and Google have offered their software for free and have taken pains to make sure they can accommodate the growing demand from users Microsoft’s Teams saw a 500 percent increase in meetings, calls, and conference usage in China since the end of January, according to a spokesperson. Usage rose in the United States as well, at least among Microsoft employees, many of whom have been instructed to work from home. Last week, their chat volume on Microsoft Teams was up 50 percent, while video and audio meetings were up 37 percent compared with a week earlier. Zoom wouldn’t comment specifically on growth in usership, but Zoom CFO Kelly Steckelberg told Yahoo Finance on Monday, “At the end of January if you took the run rate of our minutes usage at that point, we were on a run rate of a hundred billion annual meeting minutes and that is up pretty significantly since then.” Slack wouldn’t comment on whether it’s seen increased usership or any issues with increased demand, citing a quiet period around its upcoming earnings. Third-party data supports the reports of spikes in usage of these products. Productiv, a firm that helps companies track how their employees use software, saw Zoom usage increase more than 30 percent since the beginning of February for employers who put restrictions on travel (Zoom usage also increased for those who didn’t impose restrictions). Microsoft Teams usage among Productiv clients is up 20 percent in the first week of March compared to the first week of February. While coronavirus has certainly caused demand for these apps to increase, it doesn’t hurt that Zoom, Microsoft, Google, and Slack are offering many of their products ’features for free. Zoom has lifted time limits on its video calls for the free versions in China, as well as for schools in Japan, Italy, and the US, by request. “We really want to do what’s right, and the opportunity to get more people exposed to Zoom we think will reap benefits in the future,” Zoom’s Steckelberg told Yahoo. Zoom stock is up more than 20 percent in the last month, a major outlier as the stock market as a whole is plummeting and fears of a recession are on the rise. Microsoft is offering anyone its premium version of Teams for free for six months and has lifted existing user limits on its free version. The premium Teams product was already available for no extra cost to those who pay for the Office Suite, and Teams had already been free for many schools. Similarly, Google announced last week that it would offer its enterprise videoconferencing features - for example, larger meetings of up to 250 people and the ability to record - for free to G Suite and G Suite for Education customers through July 1, 2020. Slack has always had a free version. Lately, it has been trying to get the influx of new users up to speed quickly by offering free webinars with live Q & As, consultations by phone, and information on working-from-home best practices. “Given that Microsoft and Google have both enabled free use of their premium conferencing and collaboration apps, Microsoft Teams and Google's Hangouts Meet, these could be good tools for businesses that haven't ordinarily paid for these services,” Lexi Sydow, senior market insights manager at App Annie, told Recode. The growth in po[CENSORED]rity of these apps is evident from download data. Zoom became the most downloaded business app in the US on iOS for the first time this week and it was the top business app in 11 other markets. (The No. 1 US business spot had previously been occupied by the job search site Indeed.) Teams rose to No. 4 in the App Store, while Hangouts Meet and Slack remained at 10th and 11th place, respectively. The situation was similar for the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, in Italy, business apps like Google’s Hangouts Meet and Classroom were the most downloaded of any category of apps this week. Last week, App Annie noted that the country had seen a huge surge in downloads in business apps, with one week in February “marking the biggest week for Business app downloads in Italy ever.” The trend was similar in China, where business and education apps saw the biggest surge in downloads of an app category. All this increased demand would be nothing if the software doesn’t work. Zoom, Teams, and Slack have said that they haven’t had any major issues and are continually preparing for increased demand. Downdetector has reported recent outages for Zoom, Teams, and Slack, but they were not severe enough to indicate that increased usage is causing work-from-home software to suffer. “What we’re doing internally is really ensuring that we have capacity available to support all these free and of course our paid customers as well,” Steckelberg said. “Ensuring that our data centers have all the capacity that we need around the globe as well as that our customer success and support teams have the bandwidth to support all these needs.” In a recent blog post, Microsoft detailed its efforts to keep Teams running smoothly for its increased number of users, including running “multiple instances of a service” in “geographically dispersed data centers.” Slack also wrote in a blog post that its “highly distributed” architecture, redundancies, and frequent testing keep Slack up and running. Additionally, “The demands on our infrastructure do not change when employees shift away from working together in the same office; There is no difference in load on our systems whether people are connecting from their office, a cellular network, or their home. ” The coronavirus has pushed working from home from a growing trend to a central focus among those whose work is mediated by computers. Whether that lasts largely depends on the length and severity of the coronavirus outbreak - and whether the software that supports working from home stands up to its increased demands. Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect that increased Teams usage in the US was among Microsoft employees and not the po[CENSORED]tion at large. It’s also been updated to state that Google enterprise upgrades are only available to existing Google customers.
  6. It seems there's a new sale on AMD's Ryzen processors every day, but these discounts usually come from retailers that accept a lower profit margin to boost sales, meaning the price cuts aren't official recommendations from AMD. That changes today via an official AMD promotion that lasts through the month of March at Newegg and Amazon (North America only). AMD tells us that it will trim pricing on some of its most po[CENSORED]r SKUs, spanning from the always-impressive Ryzen 5 3600 to the powerful Ryzen 9 3900X, with discounts ranging from $ 25 to $ 50 off the recommended pricing. AMD also sweetens the deal with three months of the Xbox Game Pass with the Ryzen 9 3900X, Ryzen 7 3800X, and Ryzen 7 3700X (while supplies last). These price trimmings apply to AMD's recommended pricing, but because the chips already sell below those guidelines, the new deals create incredibly enticing price points. For instance, you can pick up a Ryzen 9 3900X for a mere $ 418.95 at Amazon, or the Ryzen 5 3600X for $ 200, both of which are well below the price cuts listed below. Ryzen 9 3900X - $ 449 ($ 50 off SEP) or lower Amazon | Newegg Ryzen 7 3800X - $ 359 ($ 40 off SEP) or lower Amazon | Newegg Ryzen 7 3700X - $ 304 ($ 25 off SEP) or lower Amazon | Newegg Ryzen 5 3600X - $ 224 ($ 25 off SEP) or lower Amazon | Newegg Ryzen 5 3600 - $ 174 ($ 25 off SEP) or lower Amazon | Newegg For select models, AMD also throws in a free three-month subscription to its Xbox Game Pass that gives you free access to over 100 PC games on Windows 10. The promotion runs through the end of March and applies to North America only.
  7. I’m just over two months into my #LocalYear life experiment, and not enough has changed. That has to change or my #LocalYear won’t yield the hoped for results. My main observation about my #LocalYear so far is that while I’ve done some new activities like Cool Block and re-allocated time to other local pursuits, it hasn’t been enough to change the quality of my everyday experience. Simply trying a bunch of new activities, as set forth in my #LocalYear kickoff post, might not do the trick. I want to push this experiment further so a deeper, felt change has a better chance of happening. The below obligations will likely push me into new, possibly uncomfortable territory and force me to create a whole new lifestyle. Before I introduce my commitments, it’s worth reflecting on the purpose of experiments, which is to validate or refute a hypothesis. In my case, the hypothesis is that a more localized lifestyle will be more rewarding than the one I’ve been living. Experiments impose a unique set of conditions to test the hypothesis and learn something new. That’s what the below five obligations are about - imposing some test conditions in order to learn. Granted, this is a less than scientific experiment and the results will be subjective and self-reported. What also makes this different from a scientific experiment is that I don’t know if I can even maintain the test conditions. Some of these commitments will be difficult and maybe even impossible to maintain. That’s OK in my book because I expect to learn as much from failing to meet my commitments as I do from meeting them. I should add that while these will be hard to do, I actually want to do them. Even with these irregularities in my experiment, I expect these commitments to ramp up my learning and help spur a more thorough lifestyle change. Here are my five personal #LocalYear commitments: 1. At least one hour a day of #LocalYear activity on average, my civic tithe. I list this first I believe it’s the most important commitment. To make change, I need to commit time to making it. My time budget should also reflect my specified. Why one hour? One hour would be around four times the average Americans spends on civic engagement per day according to this report. It would also be just over 10 percent of my non-working, non-sleeping time per day, which represents what I think of as a civic tithe. Tithing is an ancient practice of contributing 10 percent of your yearly income to your religious community. I’d be doing a similar thing, but giving time to my secular community instead of money to a religious one. This might not sound like a lot of time, but it would be a big shift for me. I expect that once I get rolling, the amount of time I spend on #LocalYear activities will increase. Check out what I’ll actually do for one hour or more a day at the bottom of my #LocalYear kickoff post here. 2. Start every day with a meditative walk. Trying a new lifestyle is more than spending time on different things, it’s also about structuring time differently. In other words, it’s about new rituals. As Shareable adviser Harald Katzmair recently shared with me, ritual makes time habitable. My morning walks will take me to downtown mountain view (my hometown). They will not only help me stay grounded psychologically, but also grounded in place. Hopefully, this will be this first of more new rituals to help me cement a new local lifestyle. 3. One hundred percent local shopping. No more online or chain stores. This will be a tough one because I love books and I’m embarrassed to say I have a big Amazon.com habit. Obviously, that has to change. Plus, is it possible to only buy from independent retail stores? I’ll find out. In any case, I want to support independent local businesses, which are an important part of the local economy and the formula for shared prosperity. I also want to get to know the people who run them better. I greatly value the local businesses in my city and believe it would be much worse without them. However, they’re facing an uncertain future, which this Institute for Local Self-Reliance report illustrates. Online and chain stores represent a huge and often community-gutting threat. For instance, research has shown that a new Walmart significantly reduces retail wages and economic output in the area for decades. This even has a name, “The Walmart Effect.” I want my spending to match my appreciation for local businesses. This might cost me more money, but it also might curtail my spending. I might forgo items that are hard to get locally or opt for a DIY substitute. Let's’s see. 4. Offset all my greenhouse gas emissions for the year. I had a mix of personal and professional air travel planned long before I committed to #LocalYear. I’ll limit air travel going forward not only because of the huge environmental impact, but also because travel will disrupt my local lifestyle. Offsetting all my 2020 emissions will keep my climate impacts top of mind and motivate me to limit air travel. I should be able to do this for under $ 300 at Terrapass, but I’ll make the final calculation at the end of the year. 5. No use of screens for entertainment. Only two hours of social media per week. This will be the hardest commitment to meet. I’ve developed a heavy screen habit. This has been a problem since I was a teenager. In my 20s, I gave away my TV because my heavy TV habit was holding me back. Shortly thereafter, my life took off because I simply had to get a life. I went 10 happy years without a TV. Now screens are everywhere, and they’re even more addictive. I spend way too much time on them, especially Netflix and social media. I’ll reserve two hours a week for social media to meet my work commitments, which will be down from about two hours a day. The coronavirus might impose some new, local conditions on top of these, though they might not be the flavor I want. I’ll report back next month on my progress meeting these commitments. Please stay healthy in the meantime.
  8. The government has cut the financial incentive for buyers of electric cars - and removed it entirely for buyers of expensive models, it has been confirmed. The Chancellor's Budget document states that the Plug-In Car Grant has been extended for a further three years to 2023. However, the value of the grant has been reduced by £500 to £3,000 from midnight tonight and models costing more than £50,000 will be ineligible for the subsidy, the Department for Transport and Office for Low Emission Vehicles have confirmed. The grant - which has been available since 2011 and helped more than 200,000 Britons buy low-emission cars - was due to expire at the end of March. When it launched nine years ago, it offered to pay £5,000 toward the price of a new electric car to reward early adopters of green vehicles. This was subsequently reduced to £4,500 and was again scaled down in October 2018 to £3,500 as the government looked to curtail the incentive. During his Budget statement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a fresh investment of £403million to keep the cost of electric cars low for the next three years. The Treasury document confirmed this news, but failed to mention any change to the value of the grant available to buyers of new electric cars. However, it has subsequently been confirmed that the grant has been trimmed by a further £500 to just £3,000 - and with immediate effect. Electric cars worth more than £50,000 are also no longer eligible to receive the subsidy at all, it has been clarified by the DfT and OLEV. This decision will impact a number of po[CENSORED]r electric models above this threshold. That includes Tesla's Model S saloon and Model X SUV, which currently cost from £77,700 and £82,700 respectively. The Tesla Model S, which costs from £77,700 in the UK, will no longer be eligible for the Plug-In Car Grant The pricier Tesla Model X SUV will also no longer qualify to receive the reduced £3,000 grant from midnight tonight t also means Audi's E-tron (from £59,185), Jaguar's I-Pace (from £63,925), the Mercedes-Benz EQC (from £64,925) and Porsche's new Taycan sports car (from £83,367) will no longer qualify for the grant from midnight tonight. The Office for Low Emission Vehicles said: 'As the uptake of zero-emission cars increases, a small reduction to the grant, as well as excluding cars costing £50,000 or more will allow more drivers to benefit from making the switch for longer. 'These changes will come into effect on orders placed on the portal after 11:59pm on 11 March and the government will continue to keep the rate of the grant under review.' Audi's E-tron electric SUV costs from £59,185 and will therefore not qualify for the PICG
  9. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says their Champions League last-16 defeat by Atletico Madrid "doesn't feel right" and criticised the La Liga side's style of play. The European champions' hopes of defending their title were ended by a 3-2 loss at Anfield on Wednesday, with Atletico winning 4-2 on aggregate. The Reds had reached the final in the previous two seasons under the German. Klopp suggested Diego Simeone's Atletico do not play "proper football". "I am completely happy with the performance. It's so difficult to play a side like this," Klopp told BT Sport, adding he was "searching for the right words". "I don't understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter-attacks. "We accept it, of course, but it doesn't feel right tonight. I realise I am a really bad loser, especially when the boys put such an effort in against world-class players on the other side who defend with two rows of four. "We know in the past two years we had some lucky moments in the Champions League - you have to to reach two finals - but today everything was against us in the decisive moments." Georginio Wijnaldum's first-half header made it 1-1 on aggregate and Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool the advantage early in extra time, but goalkeeper Adrian's error allowed substitute Marcos Llorente to score a crucial away goal. Llorente scored again before Alvaro Morata added a third for Atletico in the dying seconds. Defeat was Liverpool's fourth loss in six matches in all competitions, but they remain 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Captain Jordan Henderson said Wednesday's result was "disappointing" but added the players would use it to end the season strongly. "We put everything into that game so we are bitterly disappointed, especially with the goals we conceded," the 29-year-old England midfielder told BT Sport. "All we can focus on is our performance level, and to have conceded those goals isn't like us. We're disappointed but we'll take it on the chin. "For the rest of today and tomorrow it won't feel nice, but we have to use it to help us finish the season strong."
  10. "The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered after consultation with the ministers concerned, the closure of primary, middle and secondary schools, from Thursday March 12, 2020 until the end of the spring holidays, scheduled for April 5, "reads the press release. President Tebboune also ordered the closure of universities and institutes of higher education, with the exception of the faculties where the remedial exams are still taking place. The decision also concerns training establishments in the vocational training and education sector, as well as Koranic schools, zaouias, literacy classes and all private educational establishments and kindergartens, according to the same source. The decision comes as a preventive measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, it was said.

  13. Prince had purple rain. Roy Batty had tears in rain. Saturn's moon Titan has methane rain. But none of those phenomena are as extremely metal as WASP-76b, an ultra-hot planet approximately 640 light-years from Earth. When day turns to night on the distant planet, something weird happens. It rains iron. The findings, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, come via a 60-day observation of WASP-76b by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. Astronomers used data collected by the Echelle Spectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations (Espresso), a new instrument on the Very Large Telescope, to study the absorption of light emitted from the ultra-hot planet and discovered the extremely metal iron rain phenomena. WASP-76b is tidally-locked, only ever showing one side to its parent star, WASP-76, much the same way the moon only ever shows on face to the Earth. Essentially, the side that faces the star is battered by radiation, sending temperatures skyrocketing above 3800 degrees Fahrenheit (or around 2100 degrees Celsius) and vaporising metals like iron. The planet's ferocious winds carry that to the night side, where temperatures are a positively chilling 2700 degrees Fahrenheit (note: this is still very hot). The team used Espresso to detect iron where day turns to night - a line called the 'terminator' - however in reverse, where the terminator turns from night to day, they couldn't detect the same signal. When the vaporized iron gets to the night side it condenses and rains down on WASP-76b in what can only be described as, "The Perfect Stage Show For An Iron Maiden Concert." "One could say that this planet gets rainy in the evening, except it rains iron," said David Ehrenreich, an astronomer at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and first author on the paper, in a press release. It was the first observations for Espresso, an instrument designed to detect exoplanets that look like Earth around stars that resemble our sun. Researchers soon realized Espresso could do much more - and combined with the powerful telescope could help study exoplanet atmospheres. The wild finding helps astronomers learn more about the extreme climates of distant plans and how they might impact processes across the cosmos. It also makes me think about how different that scene in the Notebook would be if it was filmed on WASP-76b. Correction, 5:30 p.m. PT: An earlier version of this article said WASP-76b was 390 light-year away. WASP-76b is much further away! It's actually 640 light-years from Earth.

  17. If a recent Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) submission (spotted by PCGamesN) is to be trusted, the GeForce RTX 2060 could be going under the knife very soon. The GeForce RTX 2060 originally came with the TU106 silicon, featuring 1,920 CUDA cores and 6GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14 Gbps. EVGA would later surgically switch the TU106 silicon for the larger TU104 silicon in its GeForce RTX 2060 KO Gaming graphics card. EVGA's swap out was insignificant as the same specifications transferred over to the new variant. This time around, however, the GeForce RTX 2060 could potentially get a real upgrade. Asus' EEC filing, which was submitted yesterday, mentions three variants of the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 with 8GB of GDDR6 memory instead of the default 6GB configuration. There are a few possible theories before we rush to conclusions. For one, this whole thing could be a human error. Asus uses a pretty similar naming scheme for its graphics card, so it's easy to get mixed up. For example, the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 is identified as ROG-STRIX-RTX2060-6G-GAMING while ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 Super is designated as ROG-STRIX-RTX2060S-8G-GAMING. It's possible that the Asus employee mistyped the part numbers when submitting the entry. Perhaps, the employee wanted to register the GeForce RTX 2060 Super but forgot to add the "S" to the part number. Then again, why register them now when the GeForce RTX 2060 Super have been out since last year? Another possibility is that Asus is just registering the part numbers in case Nvidia does decide to refresh the GeForce RTX 2060 with more memory in the future. Remember, you can submit as many products as you want to the EEC, and not every one of them will be produced or released to the market. Model Part Number : ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 EVO OC Edition ROG-STRIX-RTX2060-O8G-EVO-GAMING ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 EVO Advanced Edition ROG-STRIX-RTX2060-A8G-EVO-GAMING ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060 ROG-STRIX-RTX2060-8G-EVO-GAMING If Nvidia does upgrade the GeForce RTX 2060, it would put the graphics card on par with the GeForce RTX 2060 Super in terms of memory. The Super variant wouldn't be affected performance-wise though as it still holds a higher CUDA core count (2,176 as opposed to the GeForce RTX 2060's 1,920). In terms of performance ranking, the GeForce RTX 2060 falls behind AMD's Navi-powered Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5600 XT. Our tests show that the Radeon RX 5700 on average delivers up to 11% higher frame rates in comparison to the GeForce RTX 2060. Would the GeForce RTX 2060 be able to close this gap with 2GB of additional GDDR6 memory? Probably not. Nonetheless, having 8GB of memory would make the GeForce RTX 2060 look good beside the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which only has 6GB of GDDR6 memory. The Radeon RX 5600 XT has a slight edge on the GeForce RTX 2060 in regards to performance. The extra memory could result very useful in high resolution gaming and might help push the GeForce RTX 2060 ahead, even if it's just by a hair.
  18. Uber's self-driving cars made their first appearance on the streets of San Francisco since the company scaled back its autonomous testing program in the wake of a fatal crash in Arizona. The California DMV reinstated Uber's permit to test self-driving vehicles on public roads last month. But the company says it will take a cautious approach and only operate two vehicles with safety drivers during daylight hours. The testing will resume on March 10th and is set to last only a few weeks, a spokesperson said. Uber's autonomous vehicles, Volvo XC90 SUVs retrofitted with the company’s self-driving hardware and software, will not pick up any passengers. Uber's self-driving cars are also on the road in Pittsburgh, Dallas, Washington, DC, and Toronto. But San Francisco is the only other city besides Pittsburgh where Uber's cars will operate in autonomous mode. “We are excited to resume autonomous testing in Uber's home city this week,” a spokesperson said. “Our testing area will be limited in scope to start, but we look forward to scaling up our efforts in the months ahead and learning from the difficult but informative road conditions that the Bay Area has to offer.” It’s quite the turnabout from Uber’s first attempt to test its self-driving cars in the city back in 2017. The DMV forced Uber to shut down its self-driving pilot after less than a week in operation because the company refused to obtain the license. Uber has been approaching its self-driving tests with an abundance of caution since a fatal crash in Tempe, Arizona, involving one of its autonomous vehicles in March 2018. The vehicle, which only had one safety driver behind the wheel, struck and killed 49 -year-old Elaine Herzberg while she was walking her bike across the street. Police later said the safety driver wasn’t watching the road but was instead streaming the Voice on her phone at the time of the crash. After a lengthy investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board split the blame between Uber, the safety driver, the victim, and the state of Arizona in a blistering official report that also took the federal government to task for failing to properly regulate the industry. The company was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by local authorities. Uber settled a lawsuit with Herzberg’s family for an undisclosed sum. Testing officially resumed nine months after the crash, with the company’s Volvo SUVs operating in a closed loop in downtown Pittsburgh, where Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group is headquartered. The company recently unveiled its third-generation vehicle, which it plans to start testing this year.
  19. I’ve lived in South Korea for more than 20 years. I’m 73-years-old, originally from Co Kilkenny. Life has changed in the last few weeks since the coronavirus has struck. My wife, Kyung Hee, and I had made plans to take her 105-year - old mother out for a special meal to celebrate the Lunar New Year on January 25th. Two days before we received a text message from the nursing home saying they were under lockdown, and for the foreseeable future no one was allowed out of or into the building. It was our first indication that the situation was precarious. Now, some seven weeks later, we wonder how Kyung Hee’s mother is faring and when we will be able to see her again. She is rather feeble, almost blind and very hard of hearing. Right now all schools, universities, libraries and museums are closed. Many planned public events have either beencelled or postponed, and people are advised to avoid large group meetings. For the first time in my experience the Catholic Church has cancelled all Masses, which I would normally regularly attend. Life is rather grim, with people having to live a confined lifestyle. I live in a small apartment on the seventh floor of a 20-floor building. Most people are afraid to go to the cinema, or large department stores, and being advised to not attend weddings or funerals. Many are either buying online, or shopping and eating locally. Every time I use public transport I hear announcements warning of the necessity of wearing face masks. Restaurants, buses and our apartment elevator supply us with hand sanitisers. With the schools closed, parents are at their wits end trying to take care of their children. Normally they would send them to Hagwons or “cram schools” during holiday time, but they cannot do that now as they too are all closed. The wealthier people can find some alternative way to keep their children occupied by employing a private teacher.
  20. Lineker tweeted 'can't help feeling it's the beginning of the end of the season' It follows the postponement of the Manchester City vs Arsenal fixture That came amid coronavirus fears after Olympiacos owner was infected Evangelos Marinakis came into contact with Arsenal players two weeks ago Leagues across Europe have canceled or postponed football fixtures Gary Lineker fears we could be witnessing 'the beginning of the end of the football season' after Manchester City's game with Arsenal was postponed because of the coronavirus. The BT Sport and Match of the Day presenter took to Twitter on Wednesday morning following football's latest precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the killer virus. He was traveling to Liverpool to present BT Sport's coverage of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night. Gary Lineker fears the football season could be curtailed if the coronavirus continues to spread following the postponement of the Manchester City vs Arsenal He posted: 'Manchester City v Arsenal is postponed. Off to Liverpool but can't help feeling like it's the beginning of the end of the football season. 'Despite the words of the late Bill Shankly, football is not more serious than life and death.' Wednesday night's fixture at the Etihad Stadium was postponed as a precaution after Arsenal players and staff came into contact with the Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has tested positive for coronavirus, during a Europa League tie nearly a fortnight ago. The Premier League does not currently have plans to postpone any other fixtures, which will continue to be played with spectators in attendance. That comes despite a number of European competitions ordering matches to be played behind closed doors in the weeks ahead. Wednesday night's other Champions League fixture, between Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, will be played in an empty Parc des Princes to prevent the virus spreading. Tuesday evening's Champions League game between Valencia and Atalanta was played behind closed doors at the Mestalla. Pep Guardiola would rather matches were suspended than played behind closed doors. Guardiola warned that suspending the season makes more sense than staging games without fans - likening empty stadiums to theaters with no spectators. 'If it's a short time, one game, then fine,' said Guardiola. 'But, if it's longer, it must be suspended. 'I would not love to play matches in the Premier League, the Champions League or the cups without the people. We play for the people. If they can't be there, it makes no sense. It's like an actor going to the theater when nobody is there. Who are you acting for that night? There is no reason to play without the people. Football is for the people. But we are going to follow the instructions of the Government. ' Meanwhile Gary Neville fears playing matches behind closed doors could have serious consequences for club's outside the Premier League. For lower league clubs, gate revenue are often the lifeblood for the day-to-day operation and Neville, who part-owns Salford City, says delaying the season, not barring fans, is the best option. 'I do not support matches played behind closed doors,' Neville said on Twitter. 'If it's necessary to shut down stadiums, the associations must find a way of delaying the season and playing the games when it is safe to do so to protect the revenue for clubs that require this income to survive.'
  21. The captain of a cruise ship that collided with a small tour boat on the Danube, killing 28 people, has gone on trial in Hungary's capital Budapest. The Mermaid, carrying South Korean tourists, sank within seconds of the collision during a rainstorm last May. The Ukrainian captain of the Vikyn Sigyn cruise ship, Yuri Chaplinsky, denies wrongdoing. He is charged with negligence leading to mass casualties, and failing to help those in the water. The disaster was the worst in 30 years on the Danube, Europe's second-longest river. Hungarian prosecutors told the court on Wednesday that Mr Chaplinsky, 64, had failed to pay sufficient attention and had not properly focused on steering the ship for several minutes during the downpour. "He did not sense the Mermaid's presence, did not radio or send out emergency sound signals," Mr Novaki told the court. The Ukrainian rejected a proposed prosecution plea bargain of a nine-year prison sentence and a further nine-year ban on his boat license. He said he wanted a trial and did not comment further. Mr Chaplinsky had worked on the river for more than 40 years, 30 of them as a boat captain. Was captain distracted? By BBC Budapest correspondent Nick Thorpe The tragedy on the Danube happened after weeks of heavy rain, which increased both the height of the water and the speed of the current. Video images of the accident show the larger ship overtaking the tourist boat, the Mermaid, as it passed under the arches of Margaret bridge, both traveling upstream. On the opening day of the trial, the prosecution argued that the captain was "distracted for personal reasons" during the crucial first five minutes after his ship, the Viking Sigyn, left its mooring. It also alleged no attempt was made to make radio contact with the smaller boat, and that no alarm signal to other ships was given. Defense lawyer Gabor Toth said he intended to call nautical, medical and police witnesses, to prove the captain's innocence. Relatives of the South Korean victims were unable to travel to Budapest for Wednesday's hearing because of the coronavirus, but say they hope to come to Hungary to mark the anniversary of the disaster on 29 May. Mr Chaplinsky has already said he is devastated by what happened, but does not believe it was his fault. In June, he was accused of deleting data from his phone following the crash. Prosecutors said it was unclear whether the deleted data was related to the incident. How did the accident happen? The Viking Sigyn cruise ship struck the Mermaid tour boat just after 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on 29 May as both vessels passed under Budapest's Margaret Bridge. Seven of the 35 people on board were rescued and several bodies quickly recovered, but others were swept away in the swollen river or trapped inside the boat. Police said the boat sank within seconds of the collision. "The current was so fast and people were floating away," one survivor, identified only by her surname Jung, told South Korea's Yonhap news agency. One of the 28 people who died remains missing. Twenty-six of those killed in the disaster were South Korean.
