  1. The stock prices of major U.S. listed EV players including Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) declined sharply on Wednesday. The sell-off was likely driven by China’s top economic planning body’s decision to investigate the investments and land use of Evergrande Auto which is seen as a key player in the Chinese EV market. [1] While the move doesn’t appear to impact Li Auto or XPeng directly, it’s likely an indicator that the government wants greater regulation of China’s electric-car players who have been growing quickly, driven partly by sizable government subsidies. Although the major Chinese EV players are expanding rapidly and innovating in areas such as battery technology and autonomous driving, the State’s moves and growing competition could limit the near-time upside for these companies which have seen stocks soar over the last few weeks. For perspective, Xpeng stock is up about 3x over the last month alone, while Li Auto stock is up over 2x. See our analysis Nio, Xpeng & Li Auto: How Do Chinese EV Stocks Compare? which compares the financial performance and valuation of the major U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players. [11/24/2020] Xpeng’s Autonomous Driving Unveil Drives Stock Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) stock jumped 34% in Monday’s trading after it unveiled its next-generation autonomous driving architecture that will feature in its 2021 production models. [1] The system will add laser-based lidar technology along with other significant software and hardware enhancements. While Xpeng and other Chinese automotive companies already offer autonomous highway driving on their vehicles, the lidar-based solution is expected to improve accuracy, helping Xpeng cars to drive themselves in more densely po[CENSORED]ted urban areas as well. Notably, Xpeng will be the first company to use lidar sensors in mass-market vehicles. Google GOOG -1.9% uses the technology in its Waymo self-driving cars, although they remain in the test phase. While the 34% jump in the stock price appears overdone, given that we don’t yet know the effectiveness of the system or the incremental costs that the new sensors will add, investors have reason to be optimistic. Autonomous driving is seen as one of the hottest themes in the automotive space. Moreover, self-driving algorithms are based on machine learning, and the more miles people drive using autonomous cars the smarter the algorithms become. If Xpeng’s system works well, it could enable the company to build an early mover advantage in the space, enabling it to gather more data and improve its self-driving capabilities. [11/3/2020] Strong October Deliveries Drive Chinese EV Stocks The stock prices of major U.S. listed Chinese electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturers soared on Monday, as they reported strong deliveries for October. Nio (NYSE:NIO) – one of the largest EV startups in China – saw its stock soar by about 9%, as it reported that deliveries in October almost doubled year-over-year to 5,055 vehicles. Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), another premium EV player saw its stock rise by about 7%, as it delivered about 3,040 vehicles through the month, marking an increase of about 230% from a year ago, driven primarily by sales of its P7 sedan which was launched earlier this year. However, deliveries were slightly lower month-over-month. Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI), a company that sells EVs that also have a small gasoline engine – said that it delivered 3,692 of its Li ONE SUVs in October, marking a month-over-month increase of about 5%. The company began production only late last year. MORE FOR YOU Nio, Xpeng & Li Auto: Why Chinese EV Stocks Are Soaring Nio, Xpeng & Li Auto: Which Chinese EV Stock Should You Pick? Why Did Xpeng Stock Soar 34% On Monday? [10/30/2020] How Do Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto Compare The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) space is booming, with China-based manufacturers accounting for over 50% of global EV deliveries. Demand for EVs in China is likely to remain robust as the Chinese government wants about 25% of all new cars sold in the country to be electric by 2025, up from roughly 5% at present. [2] While Tesla TSLA -0.5% is a leader in the Chinese luxury EV market driven by production at its new Shanghai facility, Nio (NYSE:NIO), Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) – three relatively young U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players, have also been gaining traction. In our analysis Nio, Xpeng & Li Auto: How Do Chinese EV Stocks Compare? we compare the financial performance and valuation of the major U.S. listed Chinese electric vehicle players. Parts of the analysis are summarized below. Overview Of Nio, Li Auto & Xpeng’s Business Nio, which was founded in 2014, currently offers three premium electric SUVs, ES8, ES6, and EC6, which are priced starting at about $50k. The company is working on developing self-driving technology and also offers other unique innovations such as Battery as a Service (BaaS) – which allows customers to subscribe for car batteries, rather than paying for them upfront. While the company has scaled up production, it hasn’t come without challenges, as it recalled about 5,000 vehicles last year after reports of multiple fires. Li Auto sells Extended-Range Electric Vehicles, which are essentially EVs that also have a small gasoline engine that can generate additional electric power for the battery. This reduces the need for EV-charging infrastructure, which is currently limited in China. The company’s hybrid strategy appears to be paying off – with its Li ONE SUV, which is priced at about $46,000 – ranking as the top-selling SUV in the new energy vehicle segment in China in September 2020. The new energy segment includes fuel cell, electric, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Xpeng produces and sells premium electric vehicles including the G3 SUV and the P7 four-door sedan, which are roughly positioned as rivals to Tesla’s Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, although they are more affordable, with the basic version of the G3 starting at about $22,000 post subsidies. The G3 SUV was among the top 3 Electric SUVs in terms of sales in China in 2019. While the company began production in late 2018, initially via a deal with an established automaker, it has started production at its own factory in the Guangdong province. How Have The Deliveries, Revenues & Margins Trended Nio delivered about 21k vehicles in 2019, up from about 11k vehicles in 2018. This compares to Xpeng which delivered about 13k vehicles in 2019 and Li Auto which delivered about 1k vehicles, considering that it began production only late last year. While Nio’s deliveries this year could approach about 40k units, Li Auto and Xpeng are likely to deliver around 25k vehicles with Li Auto seeing the highest growth. Over 2019, Nio’s Revenues stood at $1.1 billion, compared to about $40 million for Li Auto and $330 million for Xpeng. Nio’s Revenues are likely to grow 95% this year, while Xpeng’s Revenues are likely to grow by about 120%. All three companies remain deeply lossmaking as costs related to R&D and SG&A remain high relative to Revenues. Nio’s Net Margins stood at -195% in 2019, Li Auto’s margins stood at about -860% while Xpeng’s margins stood at -160%. However, margins are likely to improve sharply in 2020, as volumes pick up. Valuation Nio’s Market Cap stood at about $37 billion as of October 28, 2020, with its stock price rising by about 7x year-to-date due to surging investor interest in EV stocks. Li Auto and Xpeng, which were both listed in the U.S. around August as they looked to capitalize on surging valuations, have a market cap of about $15 billion and $14 billion, respectively. On a relative basis, Nio trades at about 15x projected 2020 Revenues, Li Auto trades at about 12x, while Xpeng trades at about 20x. While valuations are certainly high, investors are likely betting that these companies will continue to grow in the domestic market, while eventually playing a larger role in the global EV space leveraging China’s relatively low-cost manufacturing, and the country’s ecosystem of battery and auto parts suppliers. Of the three companies, Nio might be the safer bet, considering its slightly longer track record, higher Revenues, and investments in technology such as battery swaps and self-driving. Li Auto also looks attractive considering its rapid growth – driven by the uptake of its hybrid powertrains – and relatively attractive valuation of about 12x 2020 Revenues. What if you’re looking for a more balanced portfolio instead? Here’s a high-quality portfolio to beat the market, with over 100% return since 2016, versus 50% for the S&P 500. Comprised of companies with strong revenue growth, healthy profits, lots of cash, and low risk, it has outperformed the broader market year after year, consistently. 2. MILAN — Innovation requires time. Sometimes quite a lot. It actually took 10 years for the Farinettis, the Italian family behind the success of high-end food emporium Eataly, to realize a project that Oscar Farinetti envisioned a decade ago. “We were strolling around the West Village in New York and my father’s attention was caught by the window of a store where knitwear was presented next to the image of a sheep,” explained Farinetti’s son Francesco. “We realized that that fashion store was doing what we were doing with food at Eataly and he had the idea of bringing the same concept, which is offering something tasty, clean and fair, outside the food industry in the world of things: a sort of Eataly of things.” More from WWD Black Friday Shoppers in New York City 2020 That’s how the idea behind Green Pea was born. Described by Francesco Farinetti, Green Pea president and chef executive officer, as “the world’s first green retail park,” Green Pea combines education, fashion, interior design, beauty, automotive and entertainment into a 161,459-square-foot space entirely dedicated to sustainability. Opening on Dec. 8, Green Pea, which spans over five floors, is located in Turin in the Lingotto district, where Eataly opened its first location in 2007. Controlled by Farinetti family’s Eatinvest SpA, while another 10 percent is in the hands of the Orecchia family behind Turin’s Vestil fashion store, Green Pea required investments of over 50 million euros. Its state-of-the-art building, an example of the most advanced sustainable architecture, is owned by Eataly Real Estate S.r.l., which also owns the Eataly locations in Milan and in Rome’s Ostiense neighborhood. “I think that with this project we are inaugurating a new way to do commerce: we brought 100 partners working together under the same roof with one mission, selling sustainable products,” said Farinetti, who expects that about 3 million people will visit Green Pea every year. “We are opening in the middle of a pandemic and, despite the difficulties of the moment, let me say that this is probably the best moment to launch this project. In fact, this pandemic really pushed people to reconsider their relationship with nature and boosted a new desire for a healthier lifestyle.”
  3. The biotech company Moderna released new data Monday morning that strengthens the case for its COVID-19 vaccine. It concludes the vaccine is 94% effective — and strongly protects against serious illness. Based on these latest findings, the company plans to submit an application for emergency use authorization to the Food and Drug Administration today. They build on Moderna's previously reported findings, based on a smaller number of cases detected in its study of about 30,000 volunteers. Overall, the study identified 185 cases in the people who received a placebo shot, compared with 11 cases in people who got the active vaccine. These latest findings are similar to results from Pfizer, which has developed a similar vaccine. And, like the Pfizer vaccine, this one seems to prevent severe cases. "There were 30 cases on placebo and zero cases that were on the vaccine," says Dr. Stephen Hoge, the president of Moderna. "So, it looks like in the trial we've been 100% effective at preventing severe COVID-19, which is really what's driving the burden of disease in hospitals and ultimately straining our public health systems." Based on those findings — and an analysis of the vaccine's safety and side effects — Moderna has decided it has enough information to submit an application to the FDA. The agency will consider granting emergency use authorization for the product in the coming weeks. "They will receive a good stack of paper," Hoge says, "but they've been receiving paper almost continuously from when we started." Pfizer applied for emergency use authorization on Nov. 9 for its COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA will hold its advisory committee to discuss that application on Dec. 10. That meeting is open to the public. The FDA's charge is to assure that drugs are both safe and effective, and the agency says it is not cutting corners when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines, which will potentially be given to many millions of healthy people. "They still have an important and solemn responsibility to review that data and develop an independent perspective on it," Hoge says, "and that's not an easy thing to do on a short time horizon." Moderna expects that on Dec. 17, the FDA will be ready for a public meeting to discuss this data. A vaccine could get the thumbs-up shortly thereafter. Either or both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines may start to become available in mid to late December, though supplies will be limited. Both use the same novel technology. Instead of injecting a weakened or dead virus, which is a common strategy for vaccines, these products are essentially small pieces of genetic material. When that's injected into a person's arm, it's picked up by cells in the immune system. The cells read the genetic code and use that to produce a protein that is actually a key fragment of the coronavirus. The body then builds antibodies that latch onto that fragment, so if and when someone encounters the actual coronavirus, the body is primed to fight it off with antibodies. Though the key action is happening at a cellular level, inoculation can trigger noticeable symptoms, ranging from a sore arm to achiness, or even fever and flu-like symptoms. Dr. Carlos del Rio, a vaccine scientist at Emory University in Atlanta, was involved in testing the Moderna vaccine. The symptoms he saw were quite similar to symptoms people get when they get the shingles vaccine. For many, the shingles vaccine creates a strong reaction. "You feel terrible for a day or two but then you're fine," del Rio says. That's the price of getting a vaccine that protects you, in the case of COVID-19, from a potentially deadly disease. But del Rio says it is a complication in administering the vaccine, because people who get these symptoms after a shot might think the vaccine actually gave them COVID-19. "We're going to have to do very good messaging to explain to people this is not COVID, it's a side effect of the vaccine and it's OK to have it," del Rio says. "It actually means the vaccine is working." The vaccine studies have been designed to show whether a shot prevents someone from falling ill. But scientists don't yet know whether people who are vaccinated can still get infected but remain without symptoms. That's important because if a vaccine can prevent even silent infections, it can further reduce the spread of the pandemic. Hoge said the company is collecting data to look for those silent infections among vaccinated volunteers, but that information won't be in hand until early next year. So, it's possible that some people who are vaccinated can still spread the virus. "That's why I tell people when you get vaccinated, continue wearing your mask," del Rio says. "We're going to know later if the vaccine actually prevents infection." He says it's remarkable how quickly all this has come together — less than a year from the time the novel coronavirus was first identified, to now, apparently on the verge of having tens of millions of doses of vaccine ready to go. "A vaccine that prevents people from getting, sick, especially from getting critically ill? It's a great vaccine right now," del Rio says. With nearly 2,000 deaths per day, "My God, we really need this vaccine." You can contact NPR Science Correspondent Richard Harris at rharris@npr.org.
  4. Technology should make life simpler, and in many ways, it does. We send texts and emails to friends and family, and they receive our words in the blink of an eye. That's progress! Password management has also leaped forward. Gone are the days of keeping track of miscellaneous passwords in a notebook that could be lost or in a hackable browser. Today, we have NordPass, a one-size-fits-all password manager that lives on your desktop, iPhone, or Android device. Most password managers complicate things Basic password security is drilled into our heads every day. We know it's a bad idea to use simple passwords or reuse the same password across multiple websites. We've also learned the hard way that website password storage isn't a reliable way to store sensitive information. Have you ever received an email saying that your favorite retailer's website was compromised and you need to change your password immediately? Right, not unusual. When online password managers came along, they seemed to solve the problem of remembering the long, complicated passwords we invented for all the websites and apps we used. But they got it wrong too. Some password managers work only on your Windows or Mac while others are meant only for your smartphone. And none of them worked as they should while you're offline. Who has time to add their data to multiple password managers? NordPass is different. NordPass believes that your passwords should be accessible no matter where you are, what device you're on, and even when you're offline. This hassle-free approach means that you can use your passwords on a Windows PC, a Mac, an iPhone, an Android device, and even on a Linux desktop. Best of all, you can sync your passwords on up to six devices and use those devices simultaneously. And if you're offline, no problem. NordPass works online or offline. They're your passwords; shouldn't you be able to access them With NordPass, you can import all your passwords from other managers in seconds. It's that easy. Passwords are saved with a click, allowing you to log in automatically to websites and apps. NordPass also stores secure notes, personal information, and credit card details. NordPass offers the security features to please your tech-savvy self and the simplicity that your grandmother needs. NordPass generates complex, hard-to-guess passwords, scans data breaches for password leaks, identifies weak links to secure your accounts, and offers Biometrics and two-factor authentification. And the whole thing is protected by XChaCha 20 encryption. NordPass also lets you share passwords securely across platforms and with trusted contacts. 6. Game information Initial release date: 2020 Publisher: Ubisoft Type: Action-adventure game Author: Geoffrey Yohalem Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and more Software developers: Ubisoft, Ubisoft, Quebec Immortals Fenyx Rising is what happens when Assassin's Creed Odyssey meets The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are some ideas the latest IP from Ubisoft can claim as its own, but it's impossible to deny the comparisons between it and the two open-world juggernauts. As such, it feels like the French publisher has bundled together a collection of ideas, themes, and features already done better by past games. Not everything has to be a ground-breaking innovation, though, and Immortals Fenyx Rising settles for its lot with a tongue in cheek adventure through Greek mythology. While it's hardly the most ambitious PlayStation 5 game playable right now, it could act as a great stopgap between the launch line-up and more important titles arriving next year. That's because it occupies a middle ground between the two aforementioned behemoths, not quite capitalising on what each did so well but providing more enough to keep you going. The game subscribes to the typical Ubisoft open world formula quite closely, but it's much smaller in scope with a campaign that can be beaten inside 20 hours and just a handful of regions to explore — welcome news for those exhausted by the length of an Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Combat is fairly enjoyable, if a little formulaic, while traversal can be considered the game's high point with a set of wings to propel yourself through the air. And yes, the mechanic plays a lot like the paraglider Link uses to explore The Great Plateau and beyond. An upgradable stamina meter governs how far Fenyx (the customisable main character) can fly as well as climb, because you'll need to reach those great heights to take advantage of your wings in the first place. It quickly helps to create a loop of gliding and mountain scaling that feels good to partake in, putting the task of reaching an objective in your hands. Risking a dash up a rocky crevice could prove fruitful if you have the stamina to match, or it could spell your demise. Again, hardly the most original feature in the world, but it works for Immortals Fenyx Rising despite the overwhelming sense of familiarity. The comparisons don't stop there, however. The title has its own version of Shrines, dubbed Vaults, that will test your puzzling and combat skills — they all even look rather similar, just like Breath of the Wild's trials. Then doubling back to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for a second, the game even lifts entire sound effects from the plight of either Kassandra or Alexios. You'd only ever pick up on this if a significant amount of your time had been invested into the title in question, but the audio cues of the map, arrow targeting, swimming, and horse riding are unmistakably the same. So, what does Ubisoft's latest do differently? Rather than taking itself seriously, a very light-hearted tone seeps its way into the story and every facet of dialogue. It draws on Greek mythology to tell a tale hardly worthy of awards. Fenyx must rescue four ancient gods and return them to their natural form before taking on the monster who put them in that state in the first place. You know, the usual video game stuff. What separates it from the rest are Zeus and Prometheus, who narrate over the entire thing in an attempt to crack as many jokes and puns as possible. Most lines are pretty cringey, warranting a shake of the head rather than a chuckle, but we did laugh at a couple of one-liners. It's the sort of comedy you know is deplorable yet you can't help but crack a smile. Dad jokes, if you will. The story would undoubtedly be worse without them though so their presence is welcomed. If they're not commenting on your aerial efforts, combat provides just enough talking points to make it interesting for most of the journey. Light attacks deplete the health bars of mythical beasts, as do heavy attacks for their stagger meters. You can focus on either one in order to send them to Elysium, although a handful of abilities acquired through skill points speed up the process. The game doesn't have a whole lot to offer in that respect, with a couple of unlockable attacks which can deal damage across a wide area or devastate a stagger bar. It's still simple but satisfying fun, however. While the game doesn't have deep skill trees or a long list of abilities to master, fights feel gratifying as speedy dodges and leaps into the air greatly expand your manoeuvrability. Timing your dash correctly slows down time, allowing you to get some free hits in and aerial combat comes with its own set of moves. Fights do start to get quite samey in the back half of the title, though, as the system runs out of ideas after revealing most of its mechanics in the first few hours. Still, there's enough here to consider it a highlight for the most part. The same can be said for puzzles, except the downright infuriating ones. Most brain teasers are somewhat basic — control the direction of wind using your bow and arrow, transport boulders to specific places, and direct arrows through specific circles in the environment. However, it's the pressure plate puzzles that really got on our nerves. You need to match up objects of various weights with the designated pad on the ground, but the problem lies in that you don't always have direct access to them — a set of metal bars may be blocking your path. Fenyx's powers come into play here as you fling the object to the correct position, but the mechanic is so finicky that it may not land correctly and activate the plate, despite that being the correct solution. It turns the whole act into a case of frustrating trial and error where you're fighting the game rather than making any progress. Speaking of which, the PS5 DualSense controller actually falls on the opposite end of the spectrum by providing less resistance than it probably should. The new adaptive triggers are utilised sparingly, with just the release of an arrow from a short bow activating any major implementation. Haptic feedback crops up here and there too, but it's nothing more than a pretty basic use case. PS5 also offers two different modes to choose from, with the performance-focused selection being the one to go with. 60 frames-per-second sees the title run smoothly with no noticeable dips. It comes with a slight hit to the visuals, but the world will continue to look colourfully beautiful. Bright shades and tones paint the mythical universe to create an inviting universe just begging to be explored from top to bottom. The same goes for the animals inhabited by it, some acting as mounts to ride and others creatures to slay. When it wants to, Immortals Fenyx Rising looks really good. There's nothing quite like the beams of the sun creeping over the hillside to reveal another new environment to explore — complete with its own colour palette, ancient architecture, and impressive statues. 10. AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT, the flagship Big Navi GPU based graphics card, launches next month & is expected to compete against the GeForce RTX 3090. Twitter fellow, Patrick Schur, managed to get access to the BIOS of the reference AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT which reveals a higher max frequency than the RX 6800 XT. AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Max Clocks Rated at 3.0 GHz, 200 MHz Higher Than The Radeon RX 6800 XT The BIOS was accessed and its specifics were listed within the MorePowerTool which lists down various parameters such as clocks, the power limit, and fan speeds. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT seems to feature the same fan profiles and power limits as the RX 6800 XT however, the minimum power limit is raised from 6% to 10%.The most interesting thing is that the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT reference model should come with a maximum graphics clock of 3000 MHz or 3.0 GHz. That's 200 MHz higher than the 2800 MHz or 2.8 GHz max clock of the Radeon RX 6800 XT. Using LN2 cooling, overclockers were able to achieve the 2.8 GHz maximum clock speed of the RX 6800 XT and able to break the single-GPU 3DMark world-record.Now having a wall around the limits of the max clock overclocker's ability to push these graphics cards further since they are hitting the wall easily when running the card on LN2. The RX 6900 XT should allow overclockers slightly higher headroom which is a first for any high-end GPU (to hit 3.0 GHz) but at the same time, overclocking it further would be a no-go unless they can bypass the limit with a custom BIOS. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT features more than just higher clocks. It has more cores and a faster-binned GPU which should allow for faster and more stable clocks. It looks like the Radeon RX 6900 XT will be breaking some big world records when it launches. The card is expected to launch first in reference flavors only but users shouldn't give up hopes on getting custom models in the future or at least when the RX 6000 series supply gets better. AMD RX 6900 XT "Big Navi 21 XT" GPU Powered 16 GB Graphics Card The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT will come packed with the Navi 21 XTX GPU which is the fully enabled die featuring 80 Compute Units or 5120 SPs. The card will also feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus interface, a 512 GB/s total bandwidth, and clock speeds of 2015 MHz base and 2250 MHz boost at reference specs. There are also 80 Ray accelerators for ray-tracing enablement on the graphics cards (one RA per Compute Unit). The graphics card will feature a TBP of 300W. In addition to the standard memory, the Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card will also feature 128 MB of Infinity Cache on the GPU die. The cache will help boost bandwidth for higher performance at resolutions beyond 1080p HD. The 128 MB Infinity Cache boosts the standard 512 GB/s bandwidth by 3.25x, delivering an effective bandwidth of up to 1.664 TB/s across all Big Navi GPU based graphics cards. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards will be available starting the 8th of December. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is said to carry a price tag of $999 US and is expected to be a reference only model for this year unless AMD gives its AIB partners a greenlight for custom variants which may be in the plans.
  11. n light of recent media reports, FIFPro wishes to clarify the manner in which it obtains the image rights of players, and its role in defending the employment rights of professional footballers worldwide. FIFPro, a not-for-profit organisation, acquires image rights via player unions in nearly 60 countries. These rights are made available to Electronic Arts and other clients in the video gaming industry. FIFPro’s relationship with the video gaming companies complements separate arrangements they directly agree with clubs, leagues, governing bodies, and individual players. FIFPro member unions decide how best to use the revenue generated, either by distributing funds directly among players or providing services in kind such as legal advice, second-career planning, and mental and physical assistance. FIFPro is reaching out to the players and their representation that have recently raised concerns so we can address their questions. As the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacts the football industry, we are proud of our member unions for having supported tens of thousands of footballers around the world. Meanwhile, Mino Raiola – a big-shot agent who represents a number of high-profile footballers, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba – from weighing in on the situation. Earlier in the week, he posted the following on Twitter earlier in the week: That's prompted EA Sports to release the following statement: Mino Raiola is a respected player representative who we have partnered with for many years, including this year when our relationship ensured his client Erling Haaland would be part of our FIFA 21 marketing campaign. We have also enjoyed a great working relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimović, who has appeared in every FIFA since 2002 and regularly received awards as part of our FUT experience. Gareth Bale’s eSports Company Elleven utilises our FIFA game as a key platform for his professional eSports athletes and we’re confident Gareth and his team see significant value in our partnership, as evidenced through this recently released content: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERNNZv-bBWk There's no sign of this row dying down just yet, but the latest round of statements should at least temporarily quell the conversation. Update (25th November, 2020): EA Sports has sent us a strongly worded statement in response to the player rights row exploding on social media this week. It told us that recent events are an attempt to drag FIFA 21 into "a dispute between a number of 3rd parties and has little to do with EA Sports". Here's its statement in full: We are aware of discussions around licensing of players in EA Sports FIFA. The current situation being played out on social media is an attempt to draw FIFA 21 into a dispute between a number of 3rd parties and has little to do with EA Sports. To be very clear, we have contractual rights to include the likeness of all players currently in our game. As already stated, we acquire these licenses directly from leagues, teams, and individual players. In addition, we work with FIFPro to ensure we can include as many players as we can to create the most authentic game. In these instances, our rights to player likenesses are granted through our club agreement with AC Milan and our long-standing exclusive partnership with the Premier League, which includes all players for Tottenham Hotspur. So, effectively, it's saying that it's fulfilling its legal obligations, and that players would be better taking issue with the organisations selling their rights and not the game itself. That seems fair. All the same, this row looks set to rumble on. Original Story: It was all looking like a routine week for EA Sports and FIFA 21, until AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic took to social media. The iconic forward – who once scored a bicycle kick from outside the penalty area against England – said it was “time to investigate” the use of his name and likeness in the uber-po[CENSORED]r football game. Tottenham winger Gareth Bale quickly followed with a similar comment. And now The Athletic reports that, while there’s currently no coordinated effort from professionals, more are poised to object to the title’s use of their names and likenesses in the game. Image rights are a complicated issue for sports, and it’s why we’ve seen a huge decline in tennis games in recent years. With titles like Tennis World Tour 2, the rights need to be negotiated for each player individually, which is an enormous headache for publishers. Leagues like the NFL and NBA have Player Associations, which license out the names and likenesses of the sport’s top talent, where football is governed by FIFPro. However, it seems that by and large those image rights are offloaded to individual leagues, such as the Premier League and La Liga. Of Europe’s top five leagues, only Serie A has not collectivised its video game rights. EA Sports says that it has an individual deal with AC Milan, which is why Zlatan Ibrahimovic can be included in the game. Sustained pressure from professionals could, however, in theory put pressure on how these contracts are negotiated. It’s definitely interesting stuff. Licensing is obviously a huge selling-point for FIFA, not just because of its offline modes, but also because of Ultimate Team; cards are coveted because they’re based on real-world professionals. Legally, we have to imagine EA Sports is doing everything above board here, but increased scrutiny is the last thing it needs as it continues to battle governments globally over its use of microtransactions as well.
  13. As Australia’s wealthy descend upon the coastal lifestyle hotspot of Byron Bay, helping house prices rise to record levels, the hunt is on to uncover the country’s next beachside gem. Buyers have begun spilling into areas north and south of Byron Bay, inundating real estate agents who report a shortage of stock and high demand for homes during the final few months of a year affected by economic uncertainty and the coronavirus pandemic. As Australia’s most easterly point, Byron Bay is famous for its beautiful beaches and rural backdrop, an idyllic haven on the far north coast of the New South Wales, 90 kilometers south of the Gold Coast in Queensland and 760 kilometers (472 miles)—or a short flight—north of Sydney. More: Billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes Makes Latest Australian Property Buy In the past five years, it’s become a hive of activity for hipsters, the health-conscious and Hollywood heavyweights such as Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky. A real estate darling, one of Byron Bay Shire’s most desirable suburbs, Bangalow was named as Australia’s best-performing regional center over the past two decades in a report released by the REA Group this month. The REA Insights Regional Australia Report 2020 found prices in Bangalow increased 1,281% from A$76,025 in 2000 to A$1.05 million (US$770,000) this year. The report also noted the move to remote-working since the pandemic reached Australian shores in the first week of March has accelerated interest in parts of regional Australia including NSW’s Northern Rivers, the area around Byron Bay where interest has pushed prices up almost 30% in the past three months, according to realestate.com.au figures. More: Buyers Seeking Greener Pastures Are Finding the Potential in Australia’s Untapped Markets REA chief economist Nerida Conisbee, who authored the report, said the movement out of capital cities has led to strong property market conditions in many regional areas around Australia. “Prior to Covid-19, fringe cities were benefiting from po[CENSORED]tion growth and affordability and that trend has continued to accelerate,” Ms. Conisbee said.“The biggest change occurring is the rising po[CENSORED]rity of areas that are not within commuting distance to a CBD [Central Business District]. Over the last 20 years, beachside areas have become more attractive, which has resulted in significant price growth.” The Next Byron Bay Agents working the NSW Northern Rivers region and neighboring Mid North Coast are benefiting from Byron Bay’s buoyancy, which they say has forced buyers to look for more affordable options and less in-demand locations. Sotheby’s International Realty agent Dominique Vasers-Williams said improved road infrastructure and more flights into the closest regional airport at Ballina, have improved accessibility and brought fresh buyers to the area immediately south of Byron Bay. “It’s transformed the travel time from Sydney and it’s become an option for people to get into this part of the world rather than somewhere more high profile and busier such as the Gold Coast,” she said. More: Australia’s Prestige Lifestyle Property Boom Two of her most recent listings have attracted extreme interest including a vacant block of oceanfront land at Ocean Street, Yamba, which has a price guide of A$2.75 million. The pre-auction sale of a luxury holiday home on Peninsula Street in Hastings Point set a record for the town, which is a 40-minute drive north of Byron Bay, when it sold for A$4.45 million in September. It last sold in 2006 for A$2.75 million. Several of the potential buyers interested would historically and traditionally have looked at Byron Bay,” Ms. Vasers-Williams said. “There’s definitely a consideration around value for money and the po[CENSORED]tion has grown significantly [in Byron Bay] too. People who are coming out of the city are asking themselves why they would go from one busy hotspot to another. They want space, peace and quiet, they don’t want to battle crowds or get caught in traffic.” More: Returning Expats and Local Buyers Boost Sydney’s Super-Prime Market, Says Knight Frank Partner REA Group indicates the average number of views per listing on realestate.com.au for NSW properties is 1,591. In regional NSW the average number of views per listing is 963. Figures compiled for Mansion Global show the average number of views per property listing in Hastings Point and Yamba has increased 89% and 90% respectively compared to November 2019. “One of the strongest areas in Australia for property search and price growth is the coastal region of NSW from the Mid North Coast up to the Queensland border,” Ms.Conisbee said. “In regional Australia, the Mid North Coast has seen the third strongest price growth over the past three months. In regional NSW, only Coffs Harbour-Grafton has seen stronger price growth. More: A Guide to the Season's New Developments “People are definitely looking beyond Byron Bay and heading both north and south. Coffs Harbour-Grafton and Mid North Coast are seeing some of the strongest price growth in NSW at the moment.” Coastal Shift The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released data in November that revealed a mass exodus of people moved out of Australia’s two biggest capital cities, Melbourne and Sydney, in the June quarter, with regional areas the greatest beneficiaries of this trend. The one-way traffic away from city areas correlates with property figures from CoreLogic, which shows property prices across Australia’s capital cities dropped 2.3% between March and October. In contrast, there has been a 1.7% spike in values across regional areas during the pandemic, with regional NSW surging 3.3%. Anecdotally, Ms. Vaser-Williams confirmed the trend is well and truly underway. More: Bondi Beach, One of Sydney’s Most Desirable Areas, Is Not Just for Tourists “The interest is definitely coming from Sydney and Melbourne from people looking to relocate,” she said. “Relocation is the common story. It’s almost clichéd, even though people knew prior to Covid they could work from home, people are telling me on a daily basis now they don’t need to be in a city.” Areas once known more as getaway and holiday locations have become permanent homes, with smaller apartments being kept in Sydney for visits back to see family and friends. More: Developers Globally Are Delaying Projects and Rethinking Design Following Coronavirus “People are thinking very much with their hearts not their heads at the moment, there’s a lack of stock and a sense of urgency to jump in and get in. That’s what’s happening,” Ms. Vaser-Williams said. Further south again, two hours from Byron Bay, Elders Real Estate agent Jake Kroehnert has also seen a rush to buy coastal properties. An original beachfront property on Main Street in Wooli he took to auction in late October attracted 20 registered bidders and sold for A$1.361 million. It was a record price for the area and well in excess of the pre-auction price guide of A$850,000 to A$900,000. It just went off,” Mr. Kroehnert said of the auction. “It always had the potential to generate that interest but it came very late. There were some big players but there were a lot of opportune buyers that thought they’d have a crack at it.” The interest was mixed, Mr. Kroehnert recalled, with “heaps of inquiry” coming out of the Byron Bay shire, Sydney, Brisbane and internationally from Abu Dhabi. He said plenty of buyers had reassessed their priorities since the pandemic and were looking for lifestyle and relaxation, which Wooli is renowned for. The nearest major township is Grafton, inland by 30 minutes, with Wooli’s services limited to a public primary school, bowling club, pub and a community built around outdoor activities such as surfing and fishing. From Penta: Richard Mille and Bulgari Channel the Disco Era with Dazzling High Jewelry Watches “We had at least 30% of the inquiry coming out of Byron Bay and lots of bidders prepared to purchase sight unseen,” he said. “The prices around where they’re coming from have risen substantially compared to Wooli, and it’s a little coastal town much like Byron Bay used to be. A lot of people are trying to get out of Byron Bay as it has become too mainstream, they’ve been priced out or they’ve sold out for big dollars.” Mr. Kroehnert is so confident demand for the area’s property will continue he made an offer on an investment property in Wooli for himself within days of the red hot auction. “Two weeks ago I definitely wasn’t thinking of doing that but off the back of that campaign I thought ‘I’m mad if I don’t’ because there’s only one way that town is going and that’s up,” he said.
  14. Albert Lea police continue to advise residents to stay away from South Fourth Avenue and West Front Street as the standoff continues with a shooter at Shady Oaks apartments. Police stated three people have been shot, including one Albert Lea police officer. The officer, who was shot in the chest, has been released from the hospital, and the two others injured have been transported to a Rochester hospital. Police were dispatched to Shady Oaks, 800 S. Fourth Ave., at 2:18 a.m. today on a report of a possible noise complaint or weapons violation. It was reported that fireworks or gunshots were heard. Upon arrival, the suspect reportedly shot at the officer, striking the squad car at least two times and the officer once. The officer was able to relocate to a safe zone, assess possible injuries and drove himself to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, according to a press release. One of the other people shot was on his way to work, police stated. Police stated they believe there is one shooter and believe the incident is isolated to the Shady Oaks building, although there have been other reports coming in from other parts of town. Some Shady Oaks residents have been relocated to United Methodist Church for safety and others are sheltering in place. Residents nearby are asked to stay in their homes. United Methodist Pastor John Mitchem, who also serves as the chaplain for Albert Lea police and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies, said Sunday morning over 40 residents from the apartment complex were at the church. “We believe we are able to be a blessing to the community in a time of need,” Mitchem said. Several churches have also called to see how they can help, but he said he thinks the church has everything it needs at this point. Food and coffee were brought in for the people, and Mitchem said they would provide shelter as long as needed. “It’s church being able to bring lightness into people’s darkness,” he said. The South Central Drug Investigative Unit SWAT team, along with neighboring SWAT teams from Mankato and Austin are responding, along with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Albert Lea Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance. Look to the Tribune for updates as they become available.
  15. t looks like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is turning out to be one of the leakiest graphics cards of all time with several custom variants either being listed early on by retailers or being unboxed by many who already have the cards in hands (mostly retailers themselves). Gigabyte's GeForce RTX 3060 Ti AORUS Master, Gaming OC (PRO) & Eagle OC Custom Models Unboxed While Many Other Variants Listed Online A Chinese retailer has posted a full unboxing video of the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti AORUS Master, Gaming OC (PRO) & Eagle OC graphics cards. Both cards were earlier listed and leaked by online retailers & from the looks of it, retailers seemingly have no problem showing a full unboxing of these cards days prior to launch. The video posted at Bilibili (Via Momomo_US) can be seen below:In the video, the China-based shop owner gives us a look at the three variants. First up, we have the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Eagle OC which is a dual-fan and dual-slot design. The card features a custom PCB design and is powered by a single 8-pin connector. The card makes use of a heatsink that is made out of several aluminum fins and features four direct contact copper pipes. The back-plate extends beyond the PCB and has a cut out to vent hot air out of the back. The Eagle OC card in specific will come with a 1695 MHz boost clock. The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming OC is a more premium model that makes use of a dual-slot and triple-fan cooling solution. The card features a much bigger aluminum heatsink and has a full cover backplate that has cutouts for the third fan to vent air out of. The graphics card makes use of a custom PCB and features a single 8-pin connector to boot. There's also the Gaming OC Pro variant which makes use of an even higher-end cooler & heatsink design and incorporates it all within a 2.5 slot form factor. The card has a more powerful PCB and as such features a higher boost clock of 1770 MHz. The graphics card is powered by an 8+6 pin connector configuration.Gigabyte also has the AORUS Master variant in the works which unlike the 4-slot RTX 3080/3090 design comes with a more tuned 2.5 slot design that was incorporated by the RTX 3070 too. The card features a 200W TGP and should be powered by an 8+6 pin connector configuration. It comes with a triple-fan configuration, RGB LEDs on both sides of the GPU shroud, and a triple HDMI and triple DisplayPort configuration. The AORUS Master will be the most expensive variant in Gigabyte's RTX 3060 Ti lineup and also feature the highest factory overclock of all models at 1800 MHz. In addition to the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti lineup, Videocardz has spotted that Skytech who is a retailer based in Lithuania, has listed several GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards. The prices are far better than the one we got to see earlier but still not hitting the MSRPs that would be finalized by NVIDIA for the European region at launch. The graphics card can be seen as low as 463.00€ that is several 100 Euros lower than what was listed earlier. The prices are as follows:A pricing histogram shows how the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Eagle was listed originally for around 680 Euros but has now dropped to a price of 466 Euros which is more in line with the final MSRP. The NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti is planned for launch on 2nd December and will be available in several custom variants at launch.
  16. Windows 10 users getting to run Android apps on their desktop is a rumor which broke earlier this week, and now we’re hearing further details of how Microsoft’s purported plans could pan out. Keep your salt shaker handy as ever with nuggets from the rumor mill, but Zac Bowden from Windows Central is one of the more reliable Microsoft sources out there, and he’s spilled a lot more info on how Project Latte – the apparent name for Microsoft’s great Android app scheme – could work. How to speed up Windows 10 We solve 100 common Windows 10 problems How to uninstall a Windows 10 update So yes, we now have a codename, ‘Latte’, and the idea is to provide Android apps via the Microsoft Store, with developers delivering them in the form of an MSIX (a type of Windows app package). That should facilitate Android software coming across with very little in the way of code changes needed – hopefully – which is obviously crucial when it comes to how many developers might make the effort, and Latte will seemingly be powered by Windows Subsystem for Linux under the hood. There’s also the apparent prospect that all this could come to fruition next year, so we might not be waiting long for Project Latte to be available. In fact, there’s a possibility it could go live with the second major update for Windows 10 in 2021 (with a reveal earlier in the year, of course). One of the sticking points could be Google Play Services support, which Bowden reckons is unlikely to be implemented with Project Latte, meaning that some key apps might not be delivered. Or if they are, they may be stripped of any Play Services components (working against that smooth and easy delivery to the Microsoft Store goal, with little work needed, as mentioned above – or potentially causing other complications). There are still a number of question marks over what kind of Android apps might make it across to Windows 10, then, and even though this project is apparently underway at Microsoft now, obviously remember this is just a rumor. And perhaps more to the point, it may just be experimentation – Project Latte may not work out, and might never see the light of day on Windows 10. Much the same as the previous effort, Project Astoria (or Windows Bridge for Android). That initiative aimed to do the same thing some five years ago, but ended up being canned (as the company switched its focus to universal apps). Right now, you can stream Android apps to your Windows 10 desktop using the Your Phone app, but that’s not quite the same as natively running them, of course, and the big stumbling block with that feature is that it’s only available for certain Samsung smartphones.
  17. Abergavenny -Hydrogen-powered car manufacturer Riversimple is hoping to steal a march on competitors ahead of Britain's promised "green revolution" that would see petrol-powered cars banned within 10 years. While conventional battery-powered electric cars may be a few miles ahead in the zero-emission vehicle race, the company is betting that nascent hydrogen technology will fuel the cars of the future. South Korea's Hyundai claims to be the current world leader, selling 5,000 units of its Nexo model in 2019, followed by the Toyota Mirai. Their sales are dwarfed by those of battery powered cars, of which there now around five million on the world's roads. Riversimple is only an ambitious upstart compared with the Asian automotive giants, but is currently the only British manufacturer in the sector with its flagship model, the Rasa. Founder Hugo Spowers is keen to take on the big boys with his self-designed model, whose name derives from the Latin 'tabula rasa', or clean slate. Starting from scratch will give him an advantage, he hopes, over manufacturing giants that are focussed on adapting petrol-driven models to run on hydrogen fuel. He also believes hydrogen has a clear advantage over electric batteries because it offers a much greater range. "A short-range car can be brilliant running on batteries, and we need them and there's a role for them," he said. "But if you want the sort of range to which we've become accustomed, of 300 miles (482 kilometres) or more, hydrogen is head and shoulders ahead in terms of the overall efficiency," he added. Rasa will begin advanced testing over the next few months, with paying customers including Monmouthshire District Council in south Wales, which has approved a hydrogen refuelling station in the town of Abergavenny. It is the only such site in the region, but recharging takes only a few minutes, compared with several hours for an electric battery. - Hire-purchase - The cars turn hydrogen and oxygen into electricity and water, offering the advantages of electric cars -- sharp acceleration, torque and quiet operation -- with no pollutants emitted. Their environmental footprint is still a problem however, with the hydrogen mainly sourced from CO2-emitting natural gas. As electricity is increasingly made from renewable sources, there is hope this could be used to create hydrogen from water via electrolysis. Another problem is the vehicle's cost. Riversimple is trying to resolve that via a hire-purchase scheme that includes maintenance and fuel costs. The vehicle would still belong to Riversimple, giving it a stake in sustainability. "You pay for it monthly by direct debit and everything's all under one umbrella, which I think is fantastic," Jane Pratt, a member of Monmouthshire County Council, told AFP. "This is a much more sustainable method of having a car," she added. Spowers said he expected the total outlay to be competitive with that of a Volkswagen Golf. "Even though the car costs us more to build, because of these long revenue streams, and because our operating costs will be lower," the cost should even out, said Spowers, who plans to launch the Rasa in three years. The company looks set to benefit from the British government's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, and specifically the goal announced a few days ago of a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. British chemical giant Ineos and market leader Hyundai this week announced a partnership to develop hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and capitalise on the expected boom. Hyundai suggested it could supply its hydrogen fuel cell technology to equip the Ineos all-terrain model Grenadier.
  18. It is never too late to start taking care of one's health and making lifestyle changes - such as eating healthier, exercising regularly and not smoking. Doing so can go a long way in preventing many diseases. The Straits Times looks at some tips on how to lead a healthier life, based on a discussion about the issue at a health webinar organised by The Straits Times on Wednesday. Q What is the best way to maintain joint health as we age, especially in the knees? A It would be ideal if people can avoid injury, especially when they are younger. When young people sustain sports injuries, for instance, it predisposes them to future joint problems. For those with joint pains, knee-strengthening exercises such as resistance and load-bearing exercises would offer a lot of help. One thing to look out for is weight. When people put on too much weight, they tend to exercise less, their muscles get weaker, and they start to experience joint degeneration. Keeping muscles strong is important. For instance, the kneecap is not connected to anything. It is the muscles that hold and stabilise the knee. Q Will exposing young children to long hours of screen time harm their vision? A There is quite a lot of evidence that near-work screen reading worsens myopia. But there are ways to mitigate this. One is to let children go out into the open where there is greenery. Some research at the National University of Singapore Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health has shown that spending sufficient time in sunlit green areas reduces the risk of myopia, especially in younger people. Another way is to get children to take frequent rests from reading. Every 20 minutes, they should look up for 20 seconds at something 20m away. Q Is it necessary to go for a full health check annually? What screenings are relevant for the different age groups? A Yes, it is a good practice, especially for older people. A narrow set of checks is recommended, such as for high blood pressure and diabetes, and it is good to watch one's weight. Generally, screening should be done for colorectal cancer and cervical cancer. For older people, it is also important to do functional testing, such as hearing and sight, because the impairment can take place slowly, without people realising it. This would create problems like social isolation due to the inability to participate in normal social activities. The inability to engage socially a
  19. A new vaccine that protects against Covid-19 is nearly 95% effective, early data from US company Moderna shows. The results come hot on the heels of similar results from Pfizer, and add to growing confidence that vaccines can help end the pandemic. Both companies used a highly innovative and experimental approach to designing their vaccines. Moderna says it is a "great day" and they plan to apply for approval to use the vaccine in the next few weeks. However, this is still early data and key questions remain unanswered. How good is it? The trial involved 30,000 people in the US with half being given two doses of the vaccine, four weeks apart. The rest had dummy injections. The analysis was based on the first 95 to develop Covid-19 symptoms. Only five of the Covid cases were in people given the vaccine, 90 were in those given the dummy treatment. The company says the vaccine is protecting 94.5% of people. The data also shows there were 11 cases of severe Covid in the trial, but none happened in people who were immunised. "The overall effectiveness has been remarkable... it's a great day," Tal Zaks, the chief medical officer at Moderna, told BBC News. Dr Stephen Hoge, the company's president, said he "grinned ear to ear for a minute" when the results came in. He told BBC News: "I don't think any of us really hoped that the vaccine would be 94% effective at preventing Covid-19 disease, that was really a stunning realisation." When will I get it? That depends on where you are in the world and how old you are. Moderna says it will apply to regulators in the US in the coming weeks. It expects to have 20 million doses available in the country. The company hopes to have up to one billion doses available for use around the world next year and is planning to seek approval in other countries too. The UK has today announced that, from spring, it will have five million doses of the Moderna vaccine, enough to vaccinate 2.5 million people. It has already outlined plans that prioritise the oldest people for immunisation. What don't we know? We still do not know how long immunity will last as volunteers will have to be followed for much longer before that can be answered. There are hints it offers some protection in older age groups, who are most at risk of dying from Covid, but there is not full data. Mr Zaks told the BBC their data so far suggests the vaccine "does not appear to lose its potency" with age. And it is not known whether the vaccine just stops people becoming severely ill, or if it stops them spreading the virus too. All these questions will affect how a coronavirus vaccine is used. Are there any side effects? No significant safety concerns have been reported, but nothing, including paracetamol, is 100% safe. Short lived fatigue, headache and pain were reported after the injection in some patients. "These effects are what we would expect with a vaccine that is working and inducing a good immune response," said Prof Peter Openshaw, from Imperial College London. How does this compare to the Pfizer vaccine? Both vaccines use the same approach of injecting part of the virus's genetic code in order to provoke an immune response. The preliminary data we have seen so far is very similar - around 90% protection for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and around 95% for Moderna's. However, both trials are still taking place and the final numbers could change. Moderna's vaccine appears to be easier to store as it remains stable at minus 20C for up to six months and can be kept in a standard fridge for up to a month. Pfizer's vaccine needs ultra-cold storage at around minus 75C, but it can be kept in the fridge for five days. The Sputnik V vaccine, developed in Russia, has also released very early data which suggests it is 92% effective. How does it work? Moderna has developed an "RNA vaccine" - it means part of the coronavirus's genetic code is injected into the body. This starts making viral proteins, but not the whole virus, which is enough to train the immune system to attack. It should train the body to make both antibodies - and another part of the immune system called T-cells to fight the coronavirus. When will Covid be over? In the space of a week, the positive results from Pfizer, Moderna and Russia have transformed our chances of ending the pandemic. Before the first results, the talk was of a vaccine that offered maybe 50% protection. Those expectations have been blown out of the water - not only are vaccines possible, they appear to be potent. The data so far also raise hopes that the other vaccines in development will be successful too, but now as one challenge draws to an ends, another begins. The logistical effort of actually vaccinating, potentially billions of people, around the world is gargantuan. Some experts have claimed normality by spring, others by next winter, others still think there is a long journey ahead. The answer will depend on how quickly countries can get this "hope in a vial" into the arms of people. What reaction has there been? "This news from Moderna is tremendously exciting and considerably boosts optimism that we will have a choice of good vaccines in the next few months," said Prof Peter Openshaw from Imperial College London. He added: "We need more complete details than we have in this press release, but this announcement adds to the general feeling of optimism." Prof Trudie Lang, from the University of Oxford, said: "It is very good news indeed to see another vaccine coming through with similar efficacy results as were reported last week from Pfizer. "This is also an interim analysis, which means that there were enough cases within the vaccinated volunteers to give statistical significance and allow the team to break the blind to determine who had the active vaccine and who had placebo." Dr Richard Hatchett, the head of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, said: "The Moderna results are as good as we could have hoped for and really terrifically encouraging."
  20. Update (28th November, 2020): It's been over a week since this issue surfaced, and Ubisoft's forums are still filled with disgruntled fans unable to access the free PlayStation 5 upgrades promised for PlayStation 4 games, when using physical media in European territories. A quick look on the forum shows many people having the same issue, with Sony or Ubisoft yet to offer a consistent solution. We'll check in with the French publisher and see if it has an update to share. Update (23rd November, 2020): Ubisoft has told Eurogamer.net it’s investigating issues with PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 upgrades of its launch titles, which appear to be affecting European owners of physical Blu-ray discs. The French publisher did suggest a workaround, which you may have mixed success with. Basically, you need to insert the PS4 disc, select View Product, and then access the upgrade from there. It may work for you, though we’ve read that some people don’t see the View Product option at all. Your mileage may vary. Original Story (22nd November, 2020): If you own a PlayStation 4 copy of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla or Watch Dogs Legion that you’re hoping to upgrade on the PlayStation 5, you may be bang out of luck because neither title is working as intended right now. This issue only appears to apply to Blu-ray owners in select European countries, but it’s no less frustrating. So, as you may already know, both titles offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. While we can verify that PS Store purchases work as intended, Blu-ray owners are having trouble. What’s supposed to happen is that you insert the PS4 disc and then download the next-gen version. Instead, fans are being quoted a £59.99 fee. Obviously, this is an error, and Ubisoft has said it’s investigating. There is a workaround that involves creating a Turkish PlayStation Network account, but we wouldn’t recommend going to those kinds of lengths for an issue that will likely be solved within the next few days. It’s a disappointing mix-up, though, of that there’s no doubt – hopefully it’s all resolved soon.

  22. Privacy advocates have panned a new productivity tool in Microsoft 365, warning that it could herald a new era of workplace surveillance. Launched earlier this month, the new Productivity Score tool allows employers to gather granular data about how their employees are using Microsoft's suite of services. The intention was to allow companies to break down how much time employees are spending using typical productivity apps like email, Microsoft Teams, and Word. Dismissing Microsoft’s good intentions, data privacy researcher Wolfie Christl believes it "turns Microsoft 365 into a full-fledged workplace surveillance tool." Check out our list of the best free office software Have a peek at our top choices for the best free word processor Have a look at our best spreadsheet software of 2020 Big Brother As per reports, the tool allows employers to drill down into data on individual employees. They can, for instance, find those who participate less in group chat conversations, send fewer emails, or fail to collaborate in shared documents. The tool then ranks each employee against their peers. Christl argues that this gives Microsoft “power to define highly arbitrary metrics that will potentially affect the daily lives of millions of employees and even shape how organizations function”. “Let me be clear: productivity score is not a work monitoring tool,” wrote Jared Spataro, the corporate vice-president for Microsoft 365 in a blog post. Dismissing the fears of privacy intrusions he added that employers have the option to anonymize the user information and even remove it completely. What irks privacy advocates however is that the function is enabled by default, and companies will have to manually opt out if they are concerned about the privacy of employees. Christl believes that “this normalizes extensive workplace surveillance in a way not seen before.” “Let me be clear: productivity score is not a work monitoring tool,” wrote Jared Spataro, the corporate vice-president for Microsoft 365 in a blog post. 25. Indian shares were flat on Friday, ahead of GDP data that is likely to show Asia's third-largest economy entered a recession in the September quarter in a coronavirus-induced slump. By Sachin Ravikumar BENGALURU: Indian shares were flat on Friday, ahead of GDP data that is likely to show Asia's third-largest economy entered a recession in the September quarter in a coronavirus-induced slump. A slight dip in IT services shares was countered by a 1.53% rise in automotive stocks before the release of monthly vehicle sales figures from Tuesday. Indian markets will be closed on Monday for a local holiday. India's economic activity likely picked up in July-September after a record 23.9% contraction the previous quarter, data due around 1200 GMT is expected to show. Economists in a Reuters poll forecast gross domestic product (GDP) to shrink 8.8%, a contraction that would still amount to a technical recession. "In spite of the impact of lockdowns, if negative growth starts to come down, that itself is positive," said A.K. Prabhakar, head of research at IDBI Capital in Mumbai. "If it goes beyond a 13% fall in GDP, it might have an impact on the markets. But if it's 9%, that is very good." The NSE Nifty 50 index was down 0.09% at 12,975.85 by 0500 GMT, while the S&P BSE Sensex was 0.18% lower at 44,178.89. Both indexes were on course to end the month about 11.5% higher - their second best monthly performance this year, after a 14.7% gain in April - powered by record inflows from foreign institutional investors and progress on COVID-19 vaccines. Tata Motors jumped 5.1% and Bajaj Auto rose 3.2%, leading the list of gainers on the Nifty 50. IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services fell 1.1% and was among the top drags on the index. Other Asian shares stalled near record highs as investors weighed renewed doubts about AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine against hopes that some of the region's economies will recovery quicker than their Western peers.
