Dear Doctors: I’ve been working from home for six months, so no more bike commutes and no office staircases. My two young kids are home, too, which means I can’t do a lunchtime bike ride, or even go during a break. How bad is it that I’m sitting way more than ever? Dear Reader: We wish we had better news, but, yes, prolonged sitting is bad for your health. The long stretches of sitting required by so many modern jobs are putting people at risk of a number of adverse health effects. This includes weight gain, obesity, increases in abdominal fat, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. Taken together, these factors are associated with an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as early death. Add in the mental health side effects of prolonged inactivity, such as depression and anxiety, and it’s easy to see how the term “sitting disease” came about. It wasn’t all that long ago — historians point to the Industrial Revolution — that we humans began to sit down for extended periods. Prior to that, staying fed, clothed, housed, protected and entertained kept us moving. With more than 600 muscles in our bodies, it’s what we’re literally built to do. This includes walking, running, reaching, climbing, stretching, swimming, twisting, crawling, jumping, bending and lifting throughout long and mostly active days. And while disease, hunger and hardship took their toll in the agrarian world, it does seem that with increasingly sedentary work and play, we’ve now traded one set of health problems for another. Today, only two out of every 10 workers have active jobs, a decrease of about 80% since 1950. Between desk work, passive transportation and the increasingly sedentary nature of entertainment and play, many people stay seated for at least 10 hours each day. That’s the number research associates with a marked increase in cardiac risk. All of which means that, even during the pandemic that’s robbed us of our normal lives, we need to get creative and get moving. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much. A study that tracked the mortality rate of 8,000 adults aged 45 and older for four years found that trading 30 seated minutes for the same amount of moderate or vigorous activity lowered the risk of early death by 35%. This joins previous research that pegged duration of sitting — an hour or more at a stretch — as a risk factor. People who sat for 30 minutes or less at a time had the best outcomes. So do your heart, lungs and metabolism a favor and work regular movement into your day. Set a timer to walk a few minutes every half-hour. Get some hand weights and lift throughout the day. Get your kids involved, too: Run and jump and stretch, chase each other around the house, have parades, enjoy moments of planned chaos, take walks together, do yoga, practice deep breathing, ride bikes. Make it a goal to work movement into your family’s daily life, and your body and your kids (and your family doctor) will thank you. BOISE (Idaho Ed News) – Gov. Brad Little said he is not preparing for new lockdowns as the coronavirus continues to spread through Idaho. “I don’t foresee a shutdown coming,” Little said Tuesday, during a telephone town hall meeting coordinated by AARP Idaho. Little also used the call to repeat assurances that controlled environments — where people wear masks and maintain distances of six feet — are safer than uncontrolled environments. “We do know that whether it is in a classroom or a restaurant and people are spaced out, the risk of transmission is much, much lower,” Little said. As part of his efforts to encourage in-person learning, Little has regularly said schools are safe and not contributing to transmission. Last week, Idaho Education News asked Little’s office for the science and data that shows schools are not a source of transmission. Little’s press secretary said Department of Health and Welfare officials are working on providing some of the data. Tuesday’s telephone town hall was the 26th Little has conducted since March 13, when he announced Idaho’s first confirmed case of COVID-19. It was also Little’s only public appearance of the week. His calendar does not include any other upcoming public events during this holiday week. Multiple callers asked Little why he hasn’t ordered a statewide mask mandate or closed bars and ordered restaurants to operate using only delivery or takeout. “We’re trying to stop the spread, we’re not trying to put anybody out of business,” Little said. Little again said he has fallen short in messaging on the importance of taking precautions and modifying behavior to slow the spread of the virus. He said he would soon be coming out with strong messages, some targeted specifically to young people. “I don’t have to have everybody doing the right thing but it sure help if I’d get 80 or 90 percent.” Although Little fielded tough questions, there were moments of optimism. In honor of Thanksgiving he expressed gratitude to health care workers and said the first, limited shipments of a vaccine could reach Idaho within about 30 days.

All adults should do a minimum of 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week, even more vital for well-being and mental health in the Covid-19 era, the World Health Organization said in its first guidance in a decade. It recommended that children and adolescents have an average of one hour of daily physical exercise and limit time in front of electronic screens. And people of all ages must compensate for growing sedentary behaviour with physical activity to ward off disease and add years to their lives, the WHO said, launching its “Every Move Counts” campaign. “These guidelines emphasise what many are experiencing during the Covid restrictions that are applied all over the world. And that is that being active every day is good not only our bodies but also our mental health,” said Fiona Bull, head of WHO’s physical activity unit. “Phone a friend and do classes online together, help your family members, do it as a family. And when you can, get outside,” she said. Pregnant women and postpartum mothers are now included in the recommendations of 150 to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity per week for adults. This brings health benefits for both the mother and baby, according to Juana Willumsen, a WHO technical officer. “For example there is a 30% reduction in gestational diabetes amongst women who are physically active during pregnancy,” she said. Adults above 65 are advised to add muscle strengthening and activities focusing on balance and coordination to help prevent falls later. Developers familiar with Rust could soon be working at AWS as Amazon's cloud computing arm has announced its plans to hire more people familiar with the programming language. The increasingly po[CENSORED]r programming language started out as a personal project of Mozilla employee Graydon Hoare and the company went on to sponsor its development in 2009 before officially announcing Rust the following year. Despite only hitting version 1.0 in 2015, Rust has held the top spot in the most loved languages category of Stack Overflow's Developer Survey for the past five years. It is considered to be one of the safest programming languages which is why Mozilla began including Rust in its browser beginning with Firefox 48 back in 2016. We've put assembled a list of the best laptops for programming These are the best cloud computing services for digital transformation Also check out our roundup of the best online courses However, Mozilla isn't alone when it comes to supporting Rust as Microsoft is also currently looking into ways to use the programming language to reduce memory-related vulnerabilities in Windows components written in C and C++. Investing in Rust developers Just last year, AWS became a sponsor of Rust and the company's developers have already made code contributions to the programming language as well as to a runtime for writing asynchronous applications with Rust called Tokio. According to principal engineer at AWS Carl Lerche, “Rust and Tokio give AWS the ability to write services that respond fast, reliably and that help us offer a better customer experience”. As open source communities like Rust are driven by the people behind them, the company has begun hiring Rust and Tokio committers in order to ensure that they have the time and resources necessary to further improve the programming language. This led AWS to build a team around Tokio which also continues to work side-by-side with developers from Dropbox, Confluent, Buoyant and other companies. Senior software engineering manager at AWS Shane Miller provided further details on the company's plans to hire more Rust developers in a press release, saying: “We’re not just hiring a couple of folks for Tokio and the Rust compiler. Rust is a critical component of our long-term strategy, and we’re investing to deliver Rust engineering at Amazon scale. That includes developer tools, infrastructure components, interoperability, and verification.” Developers interested in joining the AWS' Rust/Tokio team can check here to see all of the company's open positions. Our audience is full of self-building enthusiasts when it comes to PC builds, so why are we taking our time to look at a prebuilt from iBUYPOWER? Simple, not everyone wants to take the time this holiday season to build computers for themselves, family members, or friends who are trying to get into PC gaming on a budget. That's where the iBUYPOWER Trace 4 9310 comes into play. This is a ready-to-ship model from iBUYPOWER that delivers solid value on Amazon for the asking price of $699.99. This model isn't sold through their custom ordering system on their own site but rather they've paired up with Amazon in order to distribute these units quickly through the holiday season. Don't want to way 7+ days for a custom build and need it pretty quickly? Why not go this route and get take advantage of that Prime delivery service. But the real question is the $699.99 Ryzen and Radeon powered system really worth the asking price? Or is this another cheap shot at trying to cash in on the holiday rush? After all with consoles sold out and a record number of people working from home and virtual learning, gaming computers have become quite the hot topic this year for Christmas. What You Get The iBUYPOWER Trace 4 9310 doesn't' exactly come very well concealed so be weary of porch pirates if you order this one, find out if you can request a signature for delivery or have something in place to protect your order. But the box does a good job of giving you an idea of what the case looks like, ignore the components shown or else you might be disappointed when you open the box. There is a nice label that shows the specifications of the build right on the box. Inside you'll be first greeted by an easy-to-read and color-coded setup guide in case you're new around here and aren't sure where to start. Or that's a good thing for those folks who have asked you to build them a computer to check before they call you to ask what a USB Port is. The computer is well protected with soft cell foam padding that protects the computer while in transit from hard bumps. No extra padding inside the PC was needed due to the lightweight of the components used. You'll find an iBUYPOWER Ares M2 mouse and keyboard in the box. While they're not the high-end gaming peripherals esports gamers are out to get they are quite solid and full of RGB flair for those who care about those things. You won't be throwing these in the trash immediately and will likely get a good bit of use out of them, consider them a value add rather than a selling point. The Trace 4 case is lightweight but solid, it made the trip free of damage and still has a fairly good feel to it. The front I/O consists of two USB 3.0 ports, a power switch, and mic/headphone jacks. The front panel is solid with two large RGB light strips and while it's not going to allow for ANY airflow the incoming air is handled by the triple 120mm RGB intake fans on the side that are filtered with cutouts in the side panel. The rear of the case has a nice label letting you know exactly what ports to use for video, however, it's made of paper and left a nasty residue after tearing as we removed it. Come on guys, find a better sticker to use as the idea is great the execution is not. Inside the case is surprisingly well managed. Most prebuilt, especially high volume ones, are literally slapped together with the cables stuffed away haphazardly. And while I'm sure you or I could do better this execution is better than most budget systems you'll find. The backside of the motherboard tray makes for easy access to the intake fan filter and to see where the SSD is mounted. Most of the component selection here is quite solid. Let's run the parts and see just what you're getting, there will be a table of components in the next section but this is part of the rundown. The CPU is rock solid, the Ryzen 5 3600 is one of the best all-around gaming CPUs to come to market in the past few years. This means you'll not be dealing with a simple quad-core but rocking a 6 core 12 thread 7nm Zen 2 based CPU and that should hold you down for years to come. But clearly, it's a tray binned CPU since it has a simple clip-on Deep Cool cooler rather than the wonderful Wraith Stealth that ships standard with the retail version of the CPU. The motherboard however I can't say the same for. It's adequate in the sense that you won't lose any performance of the CPU or any components installed but it is an ASROCK A320M/ac meaning you get zero overclocking support nor will you get PCIe Gen 4 support that the CPU and GPU both have. Speaking of the GPU, we're greeted with a modern offering here as well. The Gigabyte Radeon RX 5500 XT 4GB is a great 1080p and delivers that performance with lower power draw and temperatures than the previous generation RX 500 Series. Memory and storage are really the Achilles heel of this build but both are easily and cheaply upgraded if you so wish. The memory that is included is an 8GB DIMM from ADATA and rated for 2666, which would fine for an Intel build (and don't get me wrong it's fine here too) but the Ryzen 3000 Series CPUs have native support for DDR4 3200, something the motherboard should support but it is what it is. You'll notice it's a single-channel configuration which is less than ideal but we'll discuss that more later. As far as storage goes we've got a single ADATA SU630 240GB SATA SSD, a solid offering but still somewhat small. Thankfully there's room on the back to add another 2.5" drive AND an open NVMe slot if you wanted to go that route too. The included power supply is from the company High Power and rated for 500W giving you some headroom on GPU upgrade if you so desired down the road. Typically I would rail on the included PSU but the High Power PSU is 80+ Bronze rated and carries a single rail 12v system so it's much better than expected

A previously undisclosed vulnerability in the web hosting control panel cPanel as well as the company's WebHost Manager (WHM) has been discovered by the vulnerability and threat management firm Digital Defense. cPanel and WHM are a suite of Linux tools that allow hosting providers and their customers to automate server management and other web hosting related tasks. cPanel has served the global hosting community for more than 20 years and over 70m domains have been launched using its software. The vulnerability, discovered by Digital Defense which affects cPanel and WHM version 11.90.05 (90.0 Build 5), is a two-factor authentication bypass flaw that can be exploited by brute force attacks. As a result, an attacker with knowledge of or access to valid credentials could bypass two-factor authentication protections on a user's cPanel or WHM account. We've rounded up the best web hosting deals ahead of Black Friday These are the best VPS hosting providers for your website We've also highlighted the best WordPress hosting CPanel provided further details on the vulnerability in a recent security advisory, saying: “The two-factor authentication cPanel Security Policy did not prevent an attacker from repeatedly submitting two-factor authentication codes. This allowed an attacker to bypass the two-factor authentication check using brute force techniques. Failed validation of the two-factor authentication code is now treated as equivalent to a failure of the account’s primary password validation and rate limited by cPHulk.” Two-factor authentication bypass flaw According to Digital Defense, the firm's internal testing demonstrated that an attack can be carried out against a vulnerable cPanel or WHM account in minutes. Thankfully though, cPanel has patched the flaw in builds 11.92.0.2, 11.90.0.17, 11.86.0.32 and users just need to install the latest updates to avoid falling victim to any potential brute force attacks exploiting the vulnerability. SVP of engineering at Digital Defense, Mike Cotton explained in a press release that the company promptly reached out to cPanel following its discovery, saying: “Our standard practice is to work in tandem with organizations on a coordinated disclosure effort to facilitate a prompt resolution to a vulnerability. The Digital Defense VRT reached out to cPanel who worked diligently on a patch. We will continue outreach to customers ensuring they are aware and able to take action to mitigate any potential risk introduced by the vulnerability.” Also check out our complete list of the best web hosting services

Intel has been planning a major update to its x86 microarchitecture with Rocket Lake and we have an update for our readers. While Intel confirmed a few weeks ago that they are planning to roll out the family sometime in 1h 2021, I have confirmation that the Rocket series of CPUs will be landing in March 2021 and whats more - they will be backwards compatible with Z490 motherboards (likely through a bios update). Intel Rocket Lake CPUs landing in March 2021 The fact that Intel Rocket Lake processors will retain backwards compatibility with Z490 motherboards is very interesting because RKL-S will be an architecture that supports PCIe 4.0 (something that has eluded Intel builds for quite some time now) while the current CPUs mated with Z490 do not. It is unclear at this point whether motherboard manufacturers will roll out partial support for PCIe 4.0 on older motherboards (yes, that is possible because most high end motherboards already partially support the specifications - the CPUs do not) or whether Z490 motherboards will be restricted to PCIe 3.0. Considering Rocket Lake is the first major architectural overhaul since Sandy Bridge, we expect great things from the RKL-S line of processors - even though they will be based on Intel's dated 14nm process. We also expect RKL-S stay in the market to be fairly short as Intel completes its volume ramp to 10nm SuperFin - which is the (finally) mature version of its 10nm process on which Tiger Lake was built. Another point worth adding here is that a possible reason Intel might be deliberately delaying the switch to 10nm is that the company currently supplies almost 80% of the x86 market and it does not have enough 10nm capacity to fulfill these orders - so its in the company's best interest to keep a part of its portfolio on 14nm while it finishes the volume ramp to 10nm SuperFin. With Intel's Fab 42 finally online as well, 2021 might just turn out to be the year Intel starts playing catch up with TSMC. Recap: Intel Rocket Lake features Cypress Cove cores, PCIe 4.0 and double-digit IPC increase over Skylake Intel's Rocket Lake processors will have up to 8 cores and feature 50% more integrated graphics power. RKL-S is based on the 14nm process, but unlike older generations, it will feature a revamped architecture based on the Sunny Cove (Ice Lake) architecture called Cypress Cove. It is essentially a backport of 10nm (non-SuperFin) to 14nm. PCIe 4.0 support and Xe 12 generation graphics have been added as well. Since it is based on the 14nm process, leaked benchmarks indicates that it will be able to boost up to 5.0 GHz (which is typical for the highly mature process right now) allowing for a best of both worlds situation where a new architecture is able to hit the ground running (speaking from a clock speed perspective) because of the highly mature node. Rocket Lake S will feature 20 CPU based PCIe 4.0 lanes (4 more than last generation) making it the first mainstream Intel architecture to support the PCIe 4.0 standard and something that has been sorely lacking from the company's lineup right now. It features new Deep Learning Boost and VNNI support which should give a significant speedup to AI-related workflows. It also features the new USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard for blazing-fast USB speeds and has Intel's 12th generation Xe graphics iGPU - which is nothing to sneeze at. Xe Graphics introduces support for high end video decoders like 4:4:4 HEVC and VP9 while allowing display resolutions of up to 3x 4k60. The integrated memory controller now natively supports speeds of up to DDR4-3200 without any overclocking. This is great news for enthusiasts because RKL is going to be the first major new architecture in a very long time. However, the fact that it is based on Cypress Cove instead of Willow Cove likely means that we will not see the 25%+ IPC we were expecting although Intel has already confirmed that it *will* be double digits. A 5.0 GHz boost clock combined with a major new architecture should offer the best possible combination for a performance upgrade for Intel customers (although at the cost of similar TDP) in a very long time and I am personally really excited to see how this performs. Are you interested in Rocket Lake?

Awards season is upon us and Cyberpunk 2077 hasn't even released yet. That puts us and a lot of outlets in a bit of an awkward position, but the Golden Joysticks have gone first with their celebration of 2020's best games. And The Last of Us: Part II came out on top by a very, very wide margin, bagging itself five awards including Ultimate Game of the Year. The Last of Us: Part II won in the Ultimate Game of the Year, PlayStation Game of the Year, Best Visual Design, Best Storytelling, and Best Audio categories. Thoroughly well deserved. Naughty Dog also took home the trophy for the best gaming studio of 2020, which must be the cherry on top for the developer. We expect this sort of praise to continue at next month's The Game Awards. The team took to Twitter to mark the occasion, thanking everyone who voted. We're so incredibly honored to have The Last of Us Part II win Ultimate Game of the Year, @PlayStation Game of the Year, Best Visual Design, Best Storytelling, Best Audio, and to be named Best Studio at The @GoldenJoysticks. Auto Trader has announced a new two-year partnership with automotive industry charity Ben, making an initial donation of £55,000 this Christmas. In addition to significant and regular fundraising, its support for Ben over the period will include a career mentoring programme for people across the industry as well as volunteering from individuals and teams from across our business to provide a range of technical skills and expertise to help Ben deliver its services. Auto Trader’s donation this autumn comes at a time when the charity is struggling to cope with the unprecedented levels of demand for its services. Demand that has been driven as a direct result of the global pandemic. The charity made an earlier rallying cry in an open letter asking automotive industry leaders for funds to ensure it could continue to offer support services to those in need. Demand for the charity’s services has increased nearly three-fold this year as people struggle to cope with the effects that COVID-19 have had on their lives. Auto Trader CEO Nathan Coe (pictured) said: “We’re committed to supporting the industry through these incredibly challenging times in all ways that we are able. The effects of COVID have been and continue to be far-reaching in people’s lives at work and at home, and Ben provides much needed support to those who need it the most. By providing not just our financial support but also through our people providing their skills and technical knowledge, we hope to be able to make a real difference to the work that Ben do.” Matt Wigginton, fundraising director at Ben, said: “When we issued our appeal to industry leaders, we had no idea Auto Trader would respond so quickly and with such generosity and enthusiasm. We rely on donations to ensure no one in automotive faces life’s toughest challenges alone, and Auto Trader’s significant donation will mean we can make a positive difference to the lives of even more people in our industry.” Auto Trader will also house post information about the work Ben does on its trade website, as well as regularly promoting Ben’s services to its over 13,000 retailer customer base.

The Fox News Channel has reached a private settlement with the parents of the slain Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. The network had baselessly reported in May 2017 that Rich leaked thousands of Democratic party emails to Wikileaks during the height of the 2016 presidential campaign. The story, reported by Fox News' Malia Zimmerman and retracted seven days later, also suggested without any evidence that Democrats might have been linked to the killing of the 27-year-old Rich, a crime that has not been solved to this day. A Fox News spokesperson tells NPR that Zimmerman is no longer with the network. "The settlement with Fox News closes another chapter in our efforts to mourn the murder of our beloved Seth, whom we miss every single day," Joel and Mary Rich wrote in their statement. "We are pleased with the settlement of this and sincerely hope that the media will take genuine caution in the future." Fox News issued a statement through a spokesperson: "We are pleased with the resolution of the claims and hope this enables Mr. and Mrs. Rich to find a small degree of peace and solace moving forward." Neither side disclosed whether Fox had made a payment to the Riches or had apologized to them. Numerous U.S. intelligence agencies and Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded it was hackers with ties to Russian spy agencies - not Rich - who were behind the theft of the DNC emails that were posted by Wikileaks during the 2016 presidential campaign. The email disclosures threw Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign off balance. She never fully regained her footing. Even at the time, Democrats attributed the theft to Russian hackers. Within weeks, however, Fox News hosts and guests were pursuing conspiracy theories centering on Clinton's campaign, Democrats, and Rich as a tortured Bernie Sanders supporter who went rogue - none of which they could prove. Zimmerman's story, which seemed to give heft to those claims, was posted online on May 16, 2017 and then discussed at length on Fox & Friends and shows led by Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs. Behind the scenes, her reporting depended heavily upon the involvement of investment advisor Edward Butowsky, then an unpaid Fox News commentator. In public, the story relied upon quotes from a private investigator that he never said, as both Zimmerman and Butowsky later acknowledged in a taped conversation. It also invoked "law enforcement sources" and "a federal investigator who reviewed an FBI forensic report." Fox never again mentioned the unnamed sources, the federal investigator, or the forensic report. The story was retracted a week later. "The article was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting," the network's statement read. "Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards." (The statement of the retraction is no longer retrievable on Fox News's website. The link above, as with the retracted story itself, is to a cached version on the Internet Archive site.) At that time, Fox News did not apologize or specify what went wrong or how it did so, and the statement did not bear the name of its author. But the network promised to continue to investigate the story and provide updates. No investigation or update ensued. Hannity told viewers he would at least temporarily stop talking about Rich on his show "out of the family's wishes." On his radio show, however, Hannity told listeners he retracted nothing. Many details about the background maneuvering surfaced in an unsuccessful lawsuit filed against Fox News by Rod Wheeler, the private investigator the Riches had hired to probe their son's death. Butowsky arranged and paid for the involvement of Wheeler, a former Washington D.C. homicide detective who was at the time also a paid Fox commentator. Butowsky also involved the White House. In April 2017, he met with then-White House secretary Sean Spicer. Spicer told NPR he did not take any action after learning of Butowsky and Wheeler's efforts to link Rich to the leak. "I'm actually the one who's been putting this together but as you know, I keep my name out of things because I have no credibility," Butowsky wrote in an email to Fox News producers and hosts, coaching them on how to frame the Rich story the night before it was posted, according to materials in the Wheeler suit. "One of the big conclusions we need to draw from this is that the Russians did not hack our computer systems and ste[a]l emails and there was no collusion" between "Trump and the Russians." The Riches also sued Zimmerman and Butowsky. The entire lawsuit was dismissed as part of the settlement. That ensures that Fox stars, including Hannity and Dobbs, will not have to give sworn testimony to the court that could be made public. Another lawsuit, brought by Seth's brother Aaron against Butowsky and others, is still pending. In 2011, Rupert Murdoch, the controlling owner of Fox News, privately apologized to the parents of a murdered British 13-year-old after it became public that private investigators for his U.K. tabloid News of the World had hacked into her mobile phone. The meeting and Murdoch's apology was immediately disclosed by both sides; Murdoch was fighting to keep alive his hopes to win British regulators' approval for takeover of a huge U.K. based satellite television company it had a controlling stake in called Sky. It's now owned by Comcast. Disclosure: NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik is the author of Murdoch's World, the Last of the Old Media Empires. Edward Butowsky sued Folkenflik and NPR for his reporting on the Seth Rich stories. The case was dismissed with no admission of wrongdoing or payments by NPR, which fully stands by its reporting.

For close to eight years now, a 100% virtual model has worked for Ascendle better than I could have imagined. Most of our U.S.-based team members live within two hours of one another, which has allowed for regular meetups—before the pandemic, that is—for teambuilding and staying connected. Web conferencing platforms support daily interactions between team members and have kept everyone feeling included and accountable. Recently, everyone received a fleece onesie with the corporate logo, and our virtual office was united over Zoom with each of us in the most comfortable of uniforms. Since March of 2020, we have watched colleagues and clients learn on the fly how to accommodate a new situation where everyone’s working remotely. We have team members across nine time zones, and they deliver working software more effectively than my teams from the past who sat within feet of one another. If you can learn to manage outside teams, they will feel like an extension of your own business. Where and when you work has become much more variable as we respect the diverse needs and concerns of others. In the software development world, we are mostly fortunate enough to be able to work from anywhere as long as our computers have power and can get online. Outsourcing software development always had its place as a go-to solution for speeding up development, but with everyone working remotely, the playing field has been leveled. Incorporating outside development teams is now just as viable of an option. Here’s how to think through it. MORE FOR YOU Why You Should Stop Texting From Your Android Messages App Apple Confirms Serious New Problems For iPhone 12 Users WhatsApp Soundly Beaten As Stunning New Messenger Alternative Goes Live Leveraging Software Development Outsourcing To Manage Growth Having more business than you can handle is the best possible problem to have, but it’s still a problem. You’ve got a windfall of customers—new and old—and you’re feeling on top of the world. You want to make them all happy, but you’re also mesmerized by the potential earnings of new ideas. You remind yourself to be careful about counting your chickens before they’ve hatched because you still have to serve the needs of your current users. These days, a business must pivot in all practical and effective ways to maintain reputation, quality and market traction. Letting outside teams work on customer-facing parts of your software development strategy might be disconcerting at first, but missing out on new opportunities should be much scarier. How to address the wonderful problem of quick or sudden growth is an important question for any business, but it’s even more critical for software development. Due to the expense and time constraints of adding new internal developers or training the internal teams you already have, it can be convenient, expedient, and fiscally responsible to loop in an outside team to help with the heavy lifting. Training new internal hires can take up valuable time and getting existing in-house teams up to speed on the latest technology and architecture could take even longer. In contrast, a software development partner can ramp up an outside team in as little as two to four weeks. The first question becomes, is my current team (or teams) ready to drive my innovative ideas? Especially in software development, results can’t be rushed, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Outsourcing domestically and leveraging resources outside the U.S. (near and far), are individually useful, but in our experience, they can work best in tandem. I call this the “hybrid” model. This model of strategic development combines U.S.-based product and technical experts with offshore/nearshore developers and testers, and can not only produce strong results, but also yield highly competitive costs. For Low-Growth Companies Low-growth companies face a daily challenge of finding capacity to pursue opportunities tied to increasing revenue. An approach here is Google’s 70/20/10 model, which is broken down into 70% sustaining work (a great target for an offshore/nearshore team you manage yourself); 20% exploring growth with internal resources; and 10% innovating, a great fit for a hybrid strategic development partner. For Mid-Growth Companies Mid-growth companies are challenged by split focus, distractions, and capacity drains. Here, a three-pronged strategy can work: 1. Avoid having your team doing routine professional services work for customers by directly leveraging offshore/nearshore teams instead. 2. Focus on core products by paying down technical debt, and scaling architecture to avoid bottlenecks. This is a great target for internal teams. 3. Innovate. Make the effort to explore new complementary products, and focus on revenue-driving opportunities. This is a great target for a hybrid strategic development partner. For High-Growth Companies Finally, for high-growth companies, the challenge is keeping pace with sales and customer demand. The answer here is to build high-velocity teams and optimize architecture in parallel. This means that internal resources should transform the current situation through attacking low-hanging fruit and de-risking key bottlenecks to scaling. Incorporating a strategic partner can help with building contemporary architecture that lays the foundation for scale, and paves the road to revenue behind it. In software development, like with everything else, time is money. With outsourcing, time is what you’re buying. These days, time is precious, but so is reliable and predictable software development capacity.

The Last of Us: Part II received a disappointing amount of attention from developer Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 5’s launch. While titles like Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima have been patched to take full advantage of the hardware, and others like Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla have received full PS4 to PS5 upgrades, Ellie’s sophomore outing still runs at 30 frames-per-second in 1440p – just as it does on the PS4 Pro. However, an icon on Best Buy’s website has renewed hope that a PS5 version is imminent. As part of its Black Friday listings, a “next-gen upgrade” icon appears prominently. Other games, like The Last of Us Remastered or Horizon Zero Dawn, simply show “enhanced for next-gen console”. It’s clearly an error, but it hasn’t stopped the Internet from running with it. Nevertheless, we’ve attempted to contact both Best Buy and Naughty Dog for additional comment, and will update when we hear back. Our guess is that The Last of Us: Part II is probably going to get some kind of next-gen re-release alongside its anticipated multiplayer mode, which is still in the works. We reckon Sony will sell this standalone on the PS5 and PS4, but will offer an Ultimate Edition bundle including some kind of The Last of Us: Part II remaster – just like it did with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That’s purely speculation on our part, though.

Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday asked the auto component industry to refrain from a cost-centric approach and instead focus on the quality of the products on the lines of international manufacturing standards. The minister also asked the automobile industry to encourage setting up of a local ancillary industry, which will reduce dependence on the imports. “Quality is important. You should understand the approach of the consumer now; they need good quality,” Gadkari said. He said the government is aiming at creating core global competencies in India by facilitating seamless integration of the automotive industry with the world. The government is trying to create an ecosystem to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles in the country. Addressing a virtual conference at Auto Serve 2020 on the theme of ‘Seizing opportunities in the new normal’, Gadkari asked the auto industry to work jointly towards achieving a broader national agenda of reducing pollution. He elaborated on the steps taken to promote electric vehicles, such as reducing GST to 5% and allowing delinking of battery cost of two- and three-wheelers from vehicle cost as it accounts for nearly 30% of the cost. The battery charging ecosystem is very important and the government is planning to set up at least one electric vehicle charging kiosk at around 69,000 petrol pumps across the country, he said. Gadkari also said, “The government is also working towards making India a global automobile manufacturing hub in the next five years. This is my dream. This will also contribute in fulfilling the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.” He said this goal is attainable as the auto industry has made significant strides in terms of development of designs and models, robust R&D, huge market, stable government framework and bright and young engineering minds. India is already the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers in the world, he added. The government has earmarked over Rs 51,000 crore for this sector under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, the highest amongst the 10 champion sectors. He also said there is a huge requirement of about 25 million skilled jobs in the automobile sector in the near future. This industry is going to create the maximum jobs and growth, he said. He called upon the automobile industry to push for manufacturing of flex engines, which have the versatility to use petrol or ethanol/ CNG as fuels. The Indian auto industry needs to follow the example of its counterparts in Brazil and US in this regard. “Our industry will utilise the opportunity being thrown up by the alternative and less polluting fuels like CNG, hydrogen and electricity,” he said. Gadkari also said the government is working towards making an e-highway between Delhi and Mumbai.
