Ageless Thanet Social Enterprise Kent is delighted to announce that the Ageless Thanet programme has been awarded an extension from the National Lottery Community Fund to continue working with local older people to alleviate loneliness and social isolation. The project is part of a national programme called Ageing Better, designed to improve the lives of people over 50, by reducing loneliness and social isolation, and improving mental and physical wellbeing. Almost 150,000 people have been involved in the programme across 14 locations, including Torbay, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, and the Isle of Wight. The Ageless Thanet project was planned to finish at the end of March 2021, but has now been extended until December 2021 in order to alleviate the difficulties faced by so many due to COVID-19. Rebecca Smith, Ageless Thanet Programme Manager, said: “We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to continue our work here at Ageless Thanet. This has and continues to be an incredibly isolating time for many people, so it has never been more important that projects such as Ageless Thanet are able to support those who are lonely. Source code allegedly belonging to commercial penetration testing software Cobalt Strike has been published on GitHub, potentially providing a new path for hackers to attack companies. Penetration testing, usually abbreviated as pen testing, has legitimate uses as a security tool to test security but can also be used by bad actors to attack a company. Ethical pen testing involves simulated attacks on a computer system to evaluate the security of the given system. In the hands of hackers, the same pen testing software can be used to identify security issues that can be exploited. Cobalt Strike, which pitches itself as a legitimate pen testing solution, has been controversial for years thanks to its use by hacking groups, though they had to pay $3,500 per year for a license to use the software or use a pirated copy. Malpedia has a page dedicated to Cobalt Strike, noting that it allows an attacker to deploy an agent named “Beacon” on the victim’s machine. The alleged code could potentially allow more hackers to use the software for nefarious purposes or develop new versions of the product. Whether the code is actually Cobalt Strike’s or not is subject to dispute. Bleeping Computer reported today that the code appears to be the Java code from the software that has been manually decompiled and then edited to fix any dependencies and remove the license check so it could be compiled. “Even though it is not the original source code, it is enough to be of serious concern to security professionals,” the report noted. The code said to have appeared on GitHub 12 days ago and has already been forked 172 times. The timing may be relevant, since a major attack involving Cobalt Strike and targeting Microsoft Teams was reported Nov. 10. Another attack that took advantage of unpatched Oracle WebLogic servers involving Cobalt Strike was reported Nov. 5. “While the allegations that the Cobalt Strike source code was posted to GitHub are unconfirmed, it certainly appears to at least be derivative of Cobalt Strike’s product,” Chester Wisniewski, principal research scientist at cybersecurity company Sophos Group plc, told SiliconANGLE. “This is unlikely to have any short-term consequence regarding criminal usage of Cobalt Strike as they are simply using stolen copies to begin with.” Where the risk lies, he said, is in the ability to update such a powerful tool with newly discovered vulnerabilities. “Only time will tell if this has an impact, but I suspect it will be business as usual for criminals for now,” he said. “This is, however, even more reason for organizations to ensure they are patching their systems as quickly as possible.”

By the looks of things, the Mountain View-based search giant wants to use an approach similar to the one Apple has already embraced for CarPlay: users won’t be allowed to set their own photos as Android Auto backgrounds, so they would instead have to stick with a series of pre-loaded photos coming bundled with the application. Version 5.8 provides us with an early look at these new photos, and a recently conducted APK teardown revealed the wallpapers are called Black, Blobs, Mountains, Droplets, Dusk, Warp, and Wave. As you can see in the gallery here, Google has decided to go for an abstract design in almost all cases, and at some level, this makes perfect sense since the purpose is to bring a touch of color to the Android Auto experience, but at the same time also keep icons and everything else on the screen as visible as possible. For now, it’s not exactly clear when Google is projected to release the wallpaper feature for all users, but there’s a chance the company keeps them for version 6.0, which is supposed to land in early 2021. As per Google’s typical Android Auto release calendar, one version update is published every month. With Android Auto version 5.8 already live, the next in the queue is build 5.9, which should get the go-ahead in December. Android Auto 6.0 is thus expected in the first month of 2021. For now, Google has remained tight-lipped on this new feature, so expect more refinements to be added in the coming updates before it gets the go-ahead for everybody.

Turning 30, you hear all about: It's the end of your youth! First gray hairs! The whole year I was 29, I felt 30 approaching like a pair of headlights on a semi. When 30 actually arrived, though, I felt better than ever. Finding a partner felt possible, probable. It would happen when I least expected it, everyone told me. But again and again, I found myself dating someone who couldn't or wouldn't commit. Even though I longed for true partnership and a family, something about the yearning and distance of unavailable men kept drawing me in. With them, I didn't have to risk the real intimacy I desperately craved. Then 35 crept up like a mountain lion: a rustling in the grass, a flash of fur, a vague sense of foreboding I couldn't quite pin down. Even strangers felt the need to weigh in with warnings. "These are critical years," a seatmate on a Southwest flight told me after we got to talking. "I had a friend who spent years dating a guy who wouldn't commit. All of a sudden she was 42 and it was too late." She had newscaster hair, a Tiffany's tennis bracelet and her own failing marriage. "I'll pray for you," she told me as she hugged me at the Burbank luggage carousel. Her words echoed. A few weeks later, I broke it off with the latest guy. Which left me 35 and single. I could feel that mountain lion circling. Call it my biological clock or the death of my youthful optimism. Call it whatever you want, but it was poised to pounce. Things got bleak. I tried practicing acceptance. Maybe this is it, I thought — living in my studio, teaching high school, going on hikes with friends. Perhaps I could live a fulfilling, contented life that didn't include a family. I could volunteer. I could get a cat. Embracing this lonely vision of my future felt less painful than holding out hope for something more. In my heart though there remained a longing that all the heartbreaks hadn't stamped out. I wanted love, a family, a baby. That's when the decision came to me. It started with an Instagram post written by someone who also had found herself single at 35 and having a child on her own. She hadn't waited for some guy to give her what she wanted. She'd gone out and gotten the life she wanted. Soon after, I caught my fingers Googling, "Having a baby on your own." And then I was reading accounts of women who had become single mothers by choice. "I have the rest of my life to work on my intimacy issues," one woman said. "I have a couple years to have a kid." It was like a bell ringing. Someplace deep inside me, deeper than the disappointment and expectation and hurt, recognized myself in those words. Becoming a single mom by choice seemed insane though. I was a public schoolteacher, not a lawyer. I didn't even have paid maternity leave. How could I afford day care, diapers and doctors' appointments? I expected people to think I was crazy, but they were supportive. "It's so inspiring," my eyebrow waxer said. "You're gonna be a good mom," my nieces said. "I wish I'd done what you're doing," a childless mentor, 15 years my senior, said. My dad was among the most supportive. "I saw so many women of my generation throw their lives away on loser guys because they didn't think they could do it on their own." He and my mom came into a modest sum of money and decided to give it to me. "There's nothing we'd rather use this money for than helping you have a baby." My brother wanted me to move home to the Bay Area, where he and my retired parents could help. He and his wife had recently sold their house in San Francisco and moved into a more spacious one in Oakland. "You can stay with us," they said. An acquaintance who had recently conceived through a sperm donor began messaging tips. Friends reviewed baby photos of sperm donors with me. One performed fertility reiki on me (hey, it's still L.A.). Everywhere I turned, people were rising up to help me. There was more love in my life than I'd ever realized. I had been like Dorothy, searching for something that had been with me the whole time. It may not have been the romantic love I craved for so long, but it was love, make no mistake. I gave myself a year to save and strategize. In that time, what the hell, I'd keep going on dates. I was done holding out hope. I just wanted to put on a pretty dress, eat good food and smooch while I still could. When the topic of children came up on these dates, I was straightforward about my plans. Having given up on finding romantic love, I no longer had any use for dating rules about playing it cool. The men responded with encouragement and questions but never called for a second date. Fair enough. our first date at Joy in Highland Park. I felt it only fair to inform him as well: "I'm planning on having a baby by myself." After dinner, we exchanged a brief but tender kiss outside the restaurant. And then I drove home. I was surprised to receive a text later that evening. He said he'd had a great time and wanted to see me again. Btw when you were driving, I noticed you have a taillight out. Lol it's been out forever! I responded. Three days later, he showed up at my apartment with a new taillight. He installed it on the curb outside, admitting he'd YouTubed the process for my make and model, just to be sure he had all the right parts. I watched in bemused disbelief as it took him five minutes to fix something I'd lived with for so long I'd forgotten it was even broken. Earlier this year our baby girl, Asha Plum, was born. Today we're getting married in a socially distant micro-ceremony on a bluff in Santa Barbara. Our daughter and parents will be present, and about 200 friends and relatives will be watching on Zoom. It's the final step in consecrating a love and a life I'd given up on finding — and that somehow, amazingly, have become mine.

Developing a piece of software and releasing it to users is just the first step. Software development is never a one-time thing;instead, it is a continuous process. You have to keep the software up to date, add new features, refine existing ones, and create security patches whenever a bug or a security hole is discovered. Updates are pushed more frequently now that they are produced in shorter sprints. Gone are the days of developing large updates over the course of a couple of months. Most development teams rely on 2-week sprints to make sure that apps and software remain up to date and exciting for the users. The shorter sprints, however, are not without their risks. Frequent updates can easily turn into a disaster when a significant error gets pushed to the users. It is not uncommon for an app to crash when started just because an incorrect code gets accidentally pushed with the most recent update. How can we avoid this? How can we make sure that the next software update is not a massive disaster? Coding Best Practices One of the most fundamental things to do when trying to keep updates a positive experience for users is making sure that codes are written in accordance to a strict standard. Coding standards and best practices are your first line of defence from catastrophic errors and incorrect patches. For starters, codes need to be commented to allow for easy checking. Code quality standards are also useful for preventing and eliminating errors that could jeopardise the security of the app. Bad coding practices are often exploited by attackers, and eliminating them is the first step towards ensuring the safety of your users. There are tools that can help you check your codes against known code quality standards. User Feedback The next thing you want to take into account is feedback from users. There is no such thing as updating an app for the sake of pushing an update. If it is not broken, don’t fix it. Users are the focus of the story here, so you have to make sure that every update is based on feedback from them. At the very least, you need to make sure that the most recent update solves user problems. Pushing an update that introduces new features but doesn’t solve existing bugs or errors is asking for trouble. Not only will you be dealing with user complaints, you risk putting them off just because they get tired of the errors. Appealing new features will not get the attention that they deserve either, since users will be too busy with their complaints. Regression Testing Make sure the update you are pushing to users doesn’t decrease the value of the app. In other words, you want to be extra certain that the latest update does not break any existing feature or introduce new bugs. This is where performing multiple regression tests comes in handy, particularly before a major release. Selective Deployment Segmentation is another safety measure to utilise when you are trying to push updates in a safe way. Updates don’t have to be released to the whole userbase. In fact, they shouldn’t. Rather than pushing the update to the entire user, you can test new functionalities on a handful of users and learn their feedback before staging a massive deployment. This is a practice that even the biggest development teams still use. Instagram, for instance, regularly tests new features to select users. When they first introduced the non-chronological timeline, they listened to complaints from a variety of user groups before finally releasing the feature to all users on the platform. Add Notes Documentation is a key ingredient in preventing update disasters. You want to be clear about the features that get updates and how the update itself affects user experience. Simply resorting to writing ‘bug fixes’ in the release note just doesn’t work anymore. Users are smarter and they want to know what kind of updates they are downloading. Some software companies use their release notes to communicate with their users. Instead of a formal one, today’s best release notes read like a short story or a comedy bit, all while delivering valuable information about the latest release. Users love this format too and they are more likely to share about your software updates when the release notes are fun to read. Have Contingencies Even with rigorous testing and all preparations in place, you still need one extra measure in place to make sure that the latest update doesn’t turn into a disaster. That extra measure is rollback. You want to be certain that you can roll the latest update back if there are issues that cannot be solved immediately. Don’t let users wait until the end of another development cycle to get the problems they face fixed. If the update doesn’t work, roll it back immediately and fix the problems later. With more apps competing for the same user segments, you cannot afford to lose the attention and affection of your users. Do It Well All of these measures will stop your software updates from turning into a disaster, and they are all very easy to deploy. You just need to plan for updates better and really listen to the issues faced by users. Perform thorough functional testing and run selective tests if you are updating certain parts of the app. With all measures in place, you also get one additional benefit: the ability to trace new bugs immediately. With the codes following coding best practices and development documentations in order, fixing new bugs and keeping the software usable will be as easy as pushing the new update at the end of your development cycle.

Autolog very much changed the space of social gaming when it debuted in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit all the way back in 2010, and it’s something EA celebrated with its recent PlayStation 4 remaster. With the PlayStation 5, however, Sony has transformed it into a system-level feature – as we’re beginning to realise now the next-gen console is out in the wild. Today we turned on our device to a wealth of notifications from games like Astro’s Playroom and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Many of these titles have leaderboards integrated into the appliance’s new Activity Cards, and you’ll be alerted when your scores have been beaten. The coolest thing is that it includes a button to instantly retry. We decided to pull out our stopwatch for one last time and see how long it’d take to improve our score in Sumo Digital’s whimsical launch day platformer. It took us 8.37 seconds before we were playing and attempting to beat our previous best time. To be clear, that’s without the game suspended in the background – it’s a cold boot from Notifications to the time trial itself. We’re yet to explore this feature to its full potential, so we don’t know if it’ll pop messages based on friends beating your score like Autolog, but we assume it will. Which is just going to be outrageously addictive, isn’t it? Especially when it’s this easy to try again! We should note that you can disable these notifications if you want to, but we’ll be leaving it on as we reckon this is awesome stuff.

Google has recently confirmed that while it’s working on fixing the audio issues users come across when connecting their Galaxy Note20 to the head unit in their cars to run Android Auto, more feedback is required to determine the cause of the problems. The struggles with the audio experience on Android Auto started shortly after the Galaxy Note20 began shipping in the summer, with several users explaining that while apps do run and show they’re playing music, no sound can be heard. “I have the new Note 20 Ultra. When I connect to Android Auto I can select something like Google Play Music or YouTube Music (or any other source) and there is no sound. The display shows that it's playing but there is nothing. If I unplug the phone and use the Bluetooth connection, the music plays fine. Even when I can't play music, phone calls work as expected while using Android Auto,” one user explained back in August. Google first replied in August and then requested users to provide more information on the problem in September, explaining that it needs additional data to develop a fix for the bug. And now the company reveals that the Android Auto audio struggles still haven’t been resolved, and the Android Auto team once again needs additional diagnosis data to figure out what exactly happens on the affected Galaxy Note20 models. “Thanks for all the reports. Our team would like to investigate this further. It would be great if you could send us a bug report from your phone to diagnose the root cause of the issue. We'll send an email with instructions on how to capture a bug report. Please reply directly to the email with your information,” Google says in this discussion thread on the forums where users are encouraged to contribute with more feedback. Worth emphasizing that the issue doesn’t happen on all Galaxy Note20 models, so right now, Google is the only one that can figure out what’s happening.

The headmaster of a Christian school in the Dallas-Fort worth metroplex reportedly defended his expulsion of a gay student-athlete by claiming, “I’m doing what Jesus would want me to do.” And if his prayers don’t keep him from being sued, word is Tony Jeffrey has a “religious freedom” defense ready. He may well need it. The Dallas Morning News reports 18-year-old Devin Bryant of Colleyville, Texas, has taken the first step toward a possible discrimination lawsuit: he’s retained a civil rights attorney in response to his expulsion. The out student-athlete learned in August — just days before the start of his senior year — that he would not be finishing his education at the Covenant Christian Academy, because of his “lifestyle,” which is “not consistent with applicable biblical standards,” in the words of the headmaster. According to the Dallas Voice, Bryant had attended CCA since Pre-K, was a consistently straight-A student admired by his teachers and has a sister who is also attending the school. Benta Bryant told the Voice her brother had never lied, cheated, stolen or done anything dishonest. “I was the one who was always trying to get him to do stuff,” she said. “He’d follow the rules. He’s a leader.” She added that her brother ran track, cross country, and had played basketball for the school. He’d appeared in a school play, and his art won awards. But he’s gay, and she’s straight. So she stays, and he’s out. “I just wanted to graduate” Devin Bryant came out on Instagram in October 2019, when he was still a junior. As is tradition for rising seniors at CCA, he applied to take part in the painting of individual parking spots on campus. The design Bryant submitted to the school’s booster club incorporated these words and phrases: “Super Hot, Fun, Attractive, Fast-driving, Insane, Very Smart, Outgoing, Party Freak, Young, Gay (as in happy don’t worry lol), Pretty, Reckless, Humble, Pyromaniac, Fun, Gay (as in homosexual this time, sorry) Person Parking Only.” As the Dallas Observer reported, the design was immediately rejected and he was called to the principal’s office. Bryant said he was told he needed to keep his sexual identity private. He agreed “I just wanted to graduate, really,” Bryant said. “We discussed the content of the artwork, which I agreed to change. And I promised to not be as vocal about my sexuality for the rest of the year.” This is also when Tony Jeffrey took over as the new headmaster. He was made aware of Bryant’s original design and his orientation. Within a few days of Jeffrey’s arrival at CCA, he met with school board members, won their approval to dismiss Bryant, and phoned Bryant’s mother to notify her that her son was expelled. It was four days before the start of his senior year. “His exact words were that Devin had chosen an evil path that was contrary to the Bible and therefore was evil and he was only doing what Jesus would do,” Consolata Bryant told the Dallas Observer. “He offered us parent counseling. Not Devin, though.” Ms. Bryant asked the headmaster, “Are you a Christian?” She then told him, “Jesus would not do what you are doing.” According to the mom, Jeffrey replied, “I’m doing what Jesus would want me to do.” Devin’s mother doesn’t deny signing the school’s student code of conduct, which bans homosexuality, alongside illegal drugs and premarital sex. The question is, if his case goes to court, which should prevail: Bryant’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, rights the founding fathers enshrined, or the school’s right to religious freedom, essentially a right to discriminate, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court just this year?Bryant, his family and supporters have participated in protests outside Covenant Christian Academy. In a written statement to the Dallas Morning News, Jeffrey claims the religious liberty exemption for faith-based educational institutions justifies his action. “That is not something we ever enjoy doing, but which sometimes becomes necessary within a community committed to the Lord and each other within our shared framework of faith,” said Jeffrey in his statement. Examining Options Bryant is not the first Texas student expelled for being gay. Fuller Theological Seminary in California dismissed a Houston woman, along with a fellow graduate student, for marrying same-sex partners. Joanna Maxon and Nathan Brittsan sued, claiming discrimination on the basis of sex. Although the district court dismissed their suit last month, Maxon is appealing the decision with the help of her lawyer: Oregon-based civil rights attorney Paul Southwick, who now also represents Devin Bryant. “The family is examining its legal options, including litigation against the school, but is open to a resolution that would not require litigation,” Southwick told the Dallas Morning News. Bryant is now attending a local public high school. He told the Dallas Voice he’s aware that other queer students have been expelled before. Although Bryant is keeping busy taking AP exams, he misses the people at CCA. “I have relationships with teachers I’ll always cherish,” Bryant said. They’re genuinely good people who love and accept me.” He said he hopes that by telling his story, he’ll hopefully help protect the next LGBTQ student who comes out, and perhaps spark a conversation. With Donald Trump’s presidency entering its final weeks, the former businessman and television personality is expected to make full use of the outgoing presidential tradition of granting pardons. Some fear that the US President will wield his expansive power to pardon some of his closest aides, family members and maybe even himself. Trump — who faces a host of legal challenges, including multiple lawsuits and fraud allegations — will no longer have the extensive legal protections of the presidency once he formally exits the White House on January 20. Possibly pre-empting these legal issues, Trump has been asking aides whether he can self-pardon since 2017, according to a CNN report. In fact, an official told the news network that Trump was “obsessed with the power of pardons” How does the presidential pardon work? All modern presidents of the United States have the constitutional right to pardon or commute the sentence of people who have broken federal laws. The US’ Supreme Court had held that this power is “granted without limit” and cannot be restricted by Congress. The President has the power to pardon individuals for nearly any crime committed in the country. He is not answerable for his pardons, and does not even have to provide a reason for issuing one. But there are a few limitations. For instance, the President cannot issue a pardon in the case of impeachment of officials. Article II, Section 2 of the United States’ Constitution says that all presidents “shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment”. Further, the power only applies to federal crimes and not state crimes. Therefore, even if he were somehow pardoned, President Trump would still have to face state investigations into his finances and business dealings. But given that the president’s pardoning powers are very broad, Trump — much like many presidents before him — can pardon his friends and family without issue. This happened earlier this year, when he commuted the prison sentence of his long-time ally Roger Stone, who was convicted of lying to Congress and witness tampering in 2019. But Trump is not the first president to issue such self-serving pardons. On his final day in office, former President Bill Clinton pardoned his own half-brother Roger Clinton for drug charges after he had served the entire sentence more than a decade earlier. According to a report by the Washington Post, Trump’s legal team even looked into the legalities of the president pardoning himself and his family in case something particularly incriminating were to emerge from the Russia probe headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in 2017. Experts argue that self-pardoning is unconstitutional as it violates the basic principle that no one should be the judge in his or her own case. A 1974 Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel memo echoed this sentiment: “Under the fundamental rule that no one may be a judge in his own case, the President cannot pardon himself.” The memorandum was issued right before former President Richard Nixon resigned after facing impeachment proceedings for his role in the Watergate scandal. His successor, and former Vice President, Gerald Ford, later pardoned him for any federal crimes he may have committed while in office. Can Vice President Mike Pence pardon Trump? While the justice department said that Nixon could not pardon himself, it also laid down an alternative that President Trump, too, could opt for — the president could temporarily step down, be granted a pardon by his Vice President and then regain power. The 25th amendment of the US constitution allows an incapacitated president to temporarily resign and hand over the reins to the Vice President, who will act on his behalf until he returns to the office. There is a remote possibility that Trump could resign before Inauguration Day after brokering a corrupt deal with Vice President Pence. Pence would then become the 46th president and could use his presidential power to pardon Trump. But such an agreement could land Trump in more trouble. For starters, it would violate the US’ federal bribery statute, which states that a public official can face criminal charges if he or she “corruptly demands, seeks, receives, accepts, or agrees to receive or accept anything of value personally or for any other person or entity” in return for “being influenced in the performance of any official act”. A deal like this would also appear to be like a blatant admission of guilt. Would a presidential pardon protect Trump completely? No, it wouldn’t. Since a presidential pardon only applies for federal crimes, it will not be able to protect Trump and the Trump Organisation from the criminal investigation which is being conducted by the Manhattan district attorney, who is a state prosecutor. The probe is looking into possible bank and insurance fraud by Trump and his companies. But a presidential pardon will erase a criminal conviction for any possible federal crime. Legal experts say that it makes most sense for Trump to opt for this route as a defence if convicted of a federal crime. What are the presidential pardons Trump has already issued? President Trump has issued a slew of controversial presidential pardons since being elected. In 2017, he pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was found guilty of being in contempt of court for ignoring a federal judge’s order to stop arresting immigrants solely based on the suspicion that they were residing in the US illegally. He has also pardoned people like right wing commentator and campaign fraudster Dinesh D’Souza, and Michael Milken, a financier convicted of securities fraud. But not all of his pardons were problematic. Some were even widely celebrated. Earlier this year, he granted a full pardon to Alice Marie Johnson, who received a life sentence for a first-time drug offences and whose concerns were first raised by businesswoman and reality TV star Kim Kardashian West. In 2018, he issued a posthumous pardon to boxer Jack Johnson, who was jailed over a hundred years ago for violating the racist ‘White Slave Traffic Act’ by crossing state lines with a white woman.
