  6. Apple has officially released macOS Big Sur, its latest operating system for Macs and MacBooks. The new macOS Big Sur is bringing some pretty major – not to mention, exciting – improvements to the operating system that powers the best Macs. Where its predecessor, macOS Catalina, only had minor improvements over macOS Mojave, macOS 11 Big Sur should bring in the biggest changes to Apple's operating system in years. Better yet, according to Craig Federighi, Apple's senior VP of Software Engineering, macOS Big Sur is built from its 'core' to take advantage of and run pretty well on Apple's new M1 chip. Thanks to this new chip, owners of the new Macs can run iPhone and iPad apps directly on their Mac. With the new MacBook Air (2020), new Mac mini and new MacBook Pro 13 (2020) all available to buy right now, these new Macs are powered by the new M1 chip, and come with macOS 11 Big Sur installed, so they are expected to be real showcases for what Big Sur, and the M1 chip, can do. In addition, the macOS 11 Big Sur is bringing in a massive redesign in the look of native macOS apps – on top of delivering some stability improvements. Apple is finally giving apps like Messages, Mail, Photos, Calendar and even Finder a fresh, much more compact and streamlined design. That’s on top of cool new features that are more in line with those on the upcoming iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, with macOS Big Sur bringing widgets. This should make your whole Apple experience a much more harmonious and unified experience. How to download and install macOS 11 Big Sur How to customize macOS Big Sur iOS 14 release date, beta, features and supported iPhones As macOS 11 Big Sur is the biggest macOS release in years, there’s a lot to talk about. Let’s delve into the most important updates, changes and new features here. That way, you can decide whether or not it’s a good time for you to upgrade your macOS. Be sure to keep this page bookmarked, and we'll keep it updated with the latest information and features.Cut to the chase What is it? macOS 11 Big Sur, successor to macOS 10.15 Catalina When is it out? It is available now How much will it cost? Nothing. Apple software updates are always free macOS 11 Big Sur release date While macOS Big Sur was revealed at WWDC 2020, Apple's macOS 11 Big Sur is finally available as a general update. As usual, this will be a free update for everyone with a compatible system. If you're not sure if your Mac or MacBook is compatible, check out the system requirements below. When will macOS 11 Big Sur be available to download? the macOS 11 Big Sur update is available for download now through your Mac's System Preferences menu, you can download it through your Mac's App Store, or through Apple's website. macOS 11 Big Sur system requirements If you want to download and install macOS 11, you're going to want to make sure your Mac is actually able to run it. And, unfortunately macOS system requirements have gone up. We went ahead and listed the macOS Big Sur-compatible Mac systems down below. 12-inch MacBook (2015 and later) MacBook Air (2013 and later) MacBook Pro (Late 2013 and later) Mac mini (2014 and later) iMac (2014 and later) iMac Pro (all models) Mac Pro (2013 and later) macOS 11 Big Sur name This time around, Apple chose Big Sur to symbolize this release of macOS. Much like the unincorporated coastal area in Northern California, this new macOS is supposed to deliver "unmatched levels of power and beauty." ts that will come with the iOS 14, which is a nice touch. Basically, Messages for Mac will also bring many of the features that its iOS 14 and iPad OS 14 versions will have. It'll also feature a more powerful search, a redesigned photo picker and new messages special effects. AirPods improvements On top of some pretty cool Spatial Audio support for the AirPods Pro, a pretty major improvement for AirPods support on macOS is here. Rather than fiddling with your Bluetooth settings when you want to use your AirPods with your Mac, they will automatically switch to your Mac when you start using it. AirPods will now seamlessly and intuitively switch between devices without you doing Sidebar in Mail and Photos The Apple Mail and Photo apps have been out of date for a while now, but Apple has brought new designs to a lot of the biggest Mac Apps, with the most notable ones being the new sidebars in Mail and Photos. The Photos app will have the same look, feel and features as its iOS 14 version. Control Center on Mac One of the best things about iOS is the super convenient Control Center that lets you change settings at a glance. macOS Big Sur brings that to the Mac, and it's easily accessible in the Menu Bar, so that you can easily change settings without digging through the preferences app. Widgets in the notifications app Just like iOS 14, macOS 11 Big Sur is getting widgets in the notifications menu, which will make it easier to get important information at a glance, with easy to read interfaces. These widgets can be customized according to your needs and preference. Mac Catalyst One of the biggest headline features of macOS Mojave was that it brought some big-name iOS apps to the Mac. However, through Mac Catalyst, new APIs and tools will help app developers bring more iOS apps over to the Mac operating system. Through these tools, you'll get features like resizable windows and keyboard tools, which will make them feel like Mac Apps, rather than iPhone apps. Mac on ARM After so many rumors, it's finally happened. Apple has finally announced that Macs will be transitioning to Apple-designed silicon, similar to what we've seen with every other device in its lineup. However, this isn't quite the death knell for Intel that some might think it is. Tim Cook said during the WWDC keynote that there are several Intel-based devices still in the works at Apple, and that the Cupertino behemoth is "very excited" about them. Still, this is probably the biggest change to come to Macs in years, as it will allow all iPhone and iPad apps to work natively on Macs for the first time. Plus, thanks to Mac Catalyst, and Rosetta 2, which will translate the source code of all Mac Apps, every Mac App will be able to run on the new ARM-based Macs.

  7. We are a week away from the launch of AMD's Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card and it looks like more results have started to leak out. The Radeon RX 6800 XT is reportedly great for overclocking as demonstrated by @OneRaichu through a GPU-z screenshot where the card is running beyond 2.5 GHz. AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT Reportedly An 'Overclockers Dream', Overclocked Beyond 2.5 GHz & Matches RTX 3090's Performance The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is the Big Navi GPU based graphics card that many are going to go after considering it is placed perfectly between the RX 6800 and RX 6900 XT while offering decent price to performance value. In the GPU-z screenshots shared, the card can be seen running at a clock speed of around 2.55 GHz which is very impressive considering that the max power draw at these clock speeds is reported under 300W whereas the card itself has a TBP of 300W at the stock clocks. It is also mentioned that the performance at these clock speeds is close to the GeForce RTX 3090 and there's no doubt that the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT will end up being faster in a handful AAA titles versus the competitor's flagship offering since AMD's official stock performance results had already shown it performing better in 5 out of 10 titles. In addition to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, we also managed to find a stock run of the Radeon RX 6800 (Non-XT) model which runs at 2.27 GHz out of the box. The maximum temperature for the card is reported at 74C with the stock triple-fan cooler while the GPU temperature hot-spot is reported at 95C. The maximum power usage is not mentioned but it should be around the 250W TBP which is advertised for the non-XT model.AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT & RX 6800 OpenCL Benchmarks Leaked Too In addition to the GPU-z screenshots, the OpenCL benchmarks of the Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 also leaked out through Geekbench by TUM_APISAK. There are several results for both cards which have been listed at Geekbench and Videocardz managed to compile them in a singular chart which shows that the Radeon RX 6800 is about as fast as the RTX 3070 while the RX 6800 XT is up to 20% faster than the RTX 3070 on average and some results are even on par with the GeForce RTX 3080. The AMD Radeon RX 6800 series graphics cards seemed to offer much better performance when paired with an AMD Ryzen system than the Intel Core-based systems which is not a surprise since Radeon RX 6000 series cards have more feature support on the Ryzen 5000 platform such as the SAM (Smart Access Memory) technology which can help in certain workloads and games. The GPU clocks were reported at a stock of 1.81 GHz for the Radeon RX 6800 and 2.02 GHz for the Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card.AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT "Big Navi 21 XT" GPU Powered 16 GB Graphics Card The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT will come packed with the Navi 21 XT GPU which is a cut-down SKU featuring 72 Compute Units or 4608 SPs. The card will also feature 16 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus interface, a 512 GB/s total bandwidth, and clock speeds of 2015 MHz base and 2250 MHz boost at reference specs. 8. Update: As rumoured earlier in the week, Bethesda has now attached a 21st May release date to Deathloop on the PS5. One important detail, the base game will be $59.99/£59.99, so the publisher is not charging next-gen tax just yet. Original Story: Deathloop, the ambitious time-based first-person adventure from Dishonored developer Arkane Studios, will seemingly launch on 21st May. That’s according to PlayStation Store listings discovered in New Zealand for both Standard and Digital Deluxe editions of the game. We’ll check in with Bethesda and try to get some kind of confirmation, although we’d anticipate an official announcement to be imminent. Pre-orders come with three items: the Storm Rider Colt character skin, one Trinket, and the Royal Protector Machete, which is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version of the game. Meanwhile, the Digital Deluxe Edition comes with three unique weapons, including the PS5 exclusive Transtar Trencher. You’ll also get: the Party Crasher Colt character skin, the Sharp Shooter Julianna character skin, two Trinkets, and an original game soundtrack. This was obviously originally scheduled to release alongside the PS5, but was pushed back earlier in the year to allow for more development time. Enjoy it, because it may be the last Arkane Studios title you can play on the PS5.

  9. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an expansion of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to include 10 more labour-intensive industry segments, including advance chemistry cell batteries, electronic and technology products, automobiles and auto components manufacturing, among others. The PLI scheme for these ten sectors will be operational for five years with a total estimated outlay of Rs 1.45 lakh crore. “These are sunrise sectors selected keeping in mind the need for job creation and getting India to link to the global value chain… the larger umbrella principle is we have to have a self-reliant India,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting. The PLI scheme aims to boost domestic manufacturing and cut down on imports by providing cash incentives on incremental sales from products manufactured in the country. Besides inviting foreign companies to set shop in India, the scheme aims to encourage local companies to set up, or expand, existing manufacturing units. The new sectors included under the PLI scheme are mostly labour-intensive and will be implemented by the respective ministries, the government said in a press statement. For instance, the Niti Aayog will implement the PLI scheme for the manufacture of advanced chemistry cell batteries, for which a sum of Rs 18,100 crore has been allotted for five years. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the nodal ministry for the implementation of the PLI scheme for mobile phone manufacturing, will also oversee the scheme for electronic and technology products. A sum of Rs 5,000 crore has been set aside for this sector. In the case of pharmaceuticals, the Rs 15,000-crore outlay will be in addition to an existing Rs 6,940-crore PLI scheme announced earlier this year for building self-reliance in over 50 key drug ingredients. “The earlier scheme was only for APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), KSMs (Key Starting Materials) and drug intermediates. This scheme is expected to be for formulations, complex APIs, excipients, biosimilars, vaccines and other critical therapeutic categories,” said a senior government official on condition of anonymity. “Some drugs including many biosimilars are not made in India and are available only outside the country,” the official said. The PLI outlay for automobiles and auto components is the highest at Rs 57,042 crore over five years, which roughly translates to Rs 10,000 crore a year. “The inclusion of high-demand high-technology items such as semiconductor fab, IoT devices and ACC batteries in the newly announced PLI scheme will greatly boost India’s manufacturing capacities and catapult it among major manufacturing hubs,” said Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Forge. Other labour-intensive areas such as textile and food products, high efficiency solar photovoltaic modules, white goods and speciality steel manufacturing have also been brought under the ambit of the PLI scheme. The respective nodal and implementing ministries and departments will have to prepare a detailed plan on how the outlay allotted to each sector will be utilised over the next five years, Sitharaman said. “The final proposals of PLI for individual sectors will be appraised by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) and approved by the Cabinet. Savings, if any, from one PLI scheme of an approved sector can be utilised to fund that of another approved sector by the Empowered Group of Secretaries. Any new sector for PLI will require fresh approval of the Cabinet,” the press statement said. Experts have said the country needs a PLI scheme in sectors which are capital intensive but can not always see the government investing as the return on investment is slow. The PLI scheme for mobile manufacturing was approved for as many as 16 companies, including the three biggest suppliers of Apple. “We will have to see how the government balances the conditions of these PLI schemes, which have been attached for valid reasons to ensure that the production that takes place is competitive, with the overarching objective of promoting ease of doing business,” said trade expert Biswajit Dhar, Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for Economic Studies and Planning.

  11. A star reporter has been fired by the New Yorker magazine after he exposed himself on a staff Zoom call. Jeffrey Toobin, 60, who is also senior legal analyst for CNN, confirmed in a tweet that he had been sacked. The New Yorker's parent company Conde Nast wrote in an email to staff: "I want to assure everyone that we take workplace matters seriously." After he was suspended last month Mr Toobin said he had believed himself to be off-camera during the incident. Vice News, which broke the initial story, reported that senior colleagues had seen Mr Toobin masturbating while apparently on a separate video call. Condé Nast's chief people officer, Stan Duncan, wrote in a note to staff quoted by US media that as a result of their internal investigation Mr Toobin was "no longer affiliated with our company". He added: "We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels respected and upholds our standards of conduct." The incident happened on 15 October during an election simulation involving the New Yorker and WNYC radio. Mr Toobin was immediately suspended. In a statement to Vice last month, he said: "I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera." He apologised to his family, friends and colleagues. "I believed I was not visible on Zoom," he told Vice. "I thought no-one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video." Vice quoted two anonymous sources who were at the meeting as saying they had witnessed the incident. The election simulation involved prominent New Yorker figures playing politicians, such as President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden. Mr Toobin was representing the courts. During a break in proceedings, according to Vice's sources, Mr Toobin appeared to be on a different video call but was seen moments later on camera touching his penis.
  12. At least at launch, it very much looks like third-party developers will be embracing the unique features of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback genuinely sound like big game-changers and those of you in the US will experience them for yourself tomorrow. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is one such title you can do that with (from Friday), which it has been revealed will change the way haptic feedback feels and operates in accordance with every gun in the game. Speaking to GameSpot, lead game designer Tony Flame explained how cool he thinks the DualSense pad is. "It's got new haptic feedback so when you're pulling the trigger, it's shaking, every time a gun fires there is a little motor in there that's firing every time. There is sensitivity on the trigger that represents the trigger pressure on a real weapon. All of that has been tuned in the game for each individual weapon. So it's quite a lot to take in, but it's pretty awesome, and it gives the guns a feeling like they've never had before." The thought of genuinely feeling the difference between shooting an assault rifle when compared to an LMG is really exciting, and that only gets better the more weapon types you throw into the mix. The rapid-fire of an SMG probably won't carry as much weight, but shooting an RPG should almost take your hand off. Cool stuff, Treyarch.
  13. Software is eating the world, and that grub can be costly. As the market for enterprise tools and software continues to balloon, organizations are spending more and more on that software across an increasingly complicated and rapidly evolving landscape. That’s where Clearfind comes in. Clearfind was founded (and bootstrapped) by James Layfield and Jocelyn Simons. The startup aims to provide clarity and transparency to organizations looking to buy enterprise software. Over the past two years, Clearfind has been building out its backend, which is a mix of machine learning and humans, to distill a software offering down to its features. When clients join the Clearfind platform, they give the startup access to their backend through integrations with products like Sage, Quickbooks, SAP, etc. so that Clearfind can take a look at their overall software spend. CIOs or CTOs can then see if there are any redundancies in their current software suite. These executives can also input the use case they’re looking to solve and Clearfind will deliver a detailed report on which SaaS products have the features to solve for it. Before Clearfind, this process could be incredibly manual or costs tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars through a consultancy. And even then, those consultants may likely be recommending the products that have paid for top placement, not necessarily the best fit . Image Credits: Clearfind Clearfind makes money by charging 1.2 cents per dollar of annual software spend. The company says that it usually reduces spend by about 30 percent for most of the companies it works with by helping them optimize their software ecosystem and eliminate redundancies. Clearfind also generates revenue through referral fees that come from search within Clearfind. Layfield and Simons were clear that vendors can not pay to influence search results or for placement on the Clearfind front-end, but rather pay for the leads that come through. These fees vary from vendor to vendor. “When a vendor gets a lead from us, they prioritize it because it’s the most qualified lead they’ll ever get,” said Layfield. “That vendor will know everything. about the buyer and that the buyer is looking for all the criteria their product meets, and how much the buyer is willing to pay. That’s a level of qualified lead that just does not exist.” Layfield explained there is an even more important reason for vendors to pay a referral fee, which is the implied LTV of a Clearfind lead. A customer that actually wants and needs the product, and the features it provides, is far less likely to churn. Clearfind isn’t alone in the space. YC-backed Vendr, which is already profitable, is also looking to reduce SaaS spend and Intello, which doesn’t just give a view of software in use but also includes a compliance component.
  14. In a presentation long on fuzzy marketing performance claims but short on actual substantive data, Apple unveiled its Arm-powered M1 processors for its Mac lineup today, which sport four high-performance cores, four efficiency cores, and eight GPU cores. The move to Arm marks Apple's biggest shift since it moved from PowerPC to Intel's x86 processors fifteen long years ago and threatens to unseat x86's decades-long dominance – dealing both Intel and AMD a stunning blow in the process. Even more concerning, Arm-based designs are already on denser and more efficient process nodes than either Intel or AMD, and surprisingly, Apple finds itself with an unlikely and powerful ally in its quest to take Arm mainstream: Nvidia. Apple believes the Arm instruction set and architecture is the path forward for client computing, but its M1 performance comparisons were blurry enough to make even the worst of shady benchmark offenders blush. For now, we don't know how the chips will stack up in real-world testing. However, while it's hard to suss out any meaningful Arm vs x86 comparisons based on what little real information the company shared (we still don't even know the M1's clock speeds), Apple's all-in gamble on Arm has broader implications for the industry. In fact, x86 now faces the most potent threat it's seen in recent history. Arm has long had greater aspirations than 'just' powering billions of mobile devices, but the ubiquity and overwhelmingly large install base of x86-powered systems have been an impossible hurdle to jump. In many respects, Arm has been plagued by the classic chicken-and-egg scenario in the PC market: Without widespread Arm PCs in the ecosystem, there simply hasn't been enough of a financial incentive for software developers to add the targeted enhancements that make code highly-performant on both Arm and x86 devices, let alone write PC applications entirely for Arm systems. While x86 code can run on Arm architectures via emulation, a dearth of tuned software shackles performance and efficiency, ultimately restricting uptake - look no further than other x86 emulation attempts, like always-connected PCs, for evidence. Apple's true strength doesn't really lay in its scale in the PC market, though. Despite much of the bombastic commentary surrounding Apple's switch from Intel to Arm, Apple only comprises roughly ~9% of the PC market. That means Intel doesn't stand to lose a devastating amount of revenue in the short term, though that could certainly happen over time if Apple's future Arm processors offer drastically higher performance at acceptable price points. That will likely take years, though, as Apple builds out its product stack. As a perfect example, Apple still offers Intel-powered versions of its PCs as the upsell to its fresh roster of Arm-powered Macs. In reality, the real key is Apple's Mac developer ecosystem. Mac developers comprise roughly 30% of the overall pool of software developers, while 45% toil away on Windows and 25% dedicate their time to writing Linux software. With Apple going all-in on Arm, it's only a matter of time before its massive pool of software developers begin to utilize the Arm instruction set more fully. That will have the knock-on effect of building a broader Arm software ecosystem that opens the door for other chipmakers to move to the Arm architecture for PCs, too. Oddly enough, Apple has an unexpected ally in its quest to bring Arm to the forefront: Nvidia. Through its pending $40 billion acquisition of Arm, Nvidia stands to benefit from Apple's efforts – Apple is an Arm licensee, after all. Like Apple, Nvidia looks to broaden the Arm software ecosystem by tapping into the existing pool of developers, but Nvidia is focused on expanding the amount of Arm software available for the lucrative data center space. Lest we forget, Nvidia employs more software engineers than hardware engineers, in many respects making it a software provider that develops chips. Nvidia also has years of experience fostering its own robust army of CUDA developers, so there's little reason to believe Nvidia won't be successful in building out the software ecosystem. Nvidia also plans to increase the amount, and quality, of silicon available for those applications to run on. Nvidia has been clear that it looks to accelerate the Arm hardware roadmaps to quicken the already-impressive pace of innovation with the company's Neoverse data center cores, and Nvidia hasn't ruled out bringing its own Nvidia-branded CPUs to market. It certainly wouldn't take much for Nvidia to develop its own chips; Arm's Neoverse cores are becoming incredibly powerful. So much so that many analysts opine that merchant silicon provider Marvell recently canceled its ThunderX program because it couldn't offer enough of a benefit beyond the standard Neoverse cores. Bolstered by important developments like the broadening appeal of Amazon Web Services' Graviton 2, the looming Graviton 3, and Ampere's nascent efforts with its Altra processors, Arm is poised to take data center market share from x86 processors at a quickening pace over the coming years – it just needs the software ecosystem to enable it. The threat is equally dangerous to both Intel and AMD, leaving them to hold the x86 line. It's clear that Intel's lack of innovation over the last few years has allowed Arm competitors to establish a foothold. Likewise, AMD's prior years of stagnation have also contributed to an industry eager for the huge generational performance gains that have become commonplace with each new generation of Arm chips. However, AMD's Zen microarchitecture has proven to be a scalable and extensible design that can deliver fantastic gen-on-gen performance improvements, leaving it as the true defender of x86's dominance, at least for now. Despite Zen's prowess, there are still a few big unanswered questions: Can AMD continue to deliver such impressive gen-on-gen performance improvements with successive architectures, and will that be enough? Given the company's recent track record, there's no reason to believe that AMD can't deliver, but those generational performance gains are becoming increasingly important as x86 faces a nimble Arm foe with a sudden influx of dollars and backing from industry stalwarts. Meanwhile, Intel has lost its long-held process node advantage due to its struggles with 10nm, and now 7nm, too. That eliminates the company's advantage of architectures that are closely tuned to its process nodes. AMD has proven there's no beating a competitor with a refined architecture on a denser node. The power and performance efficiency gains are just too much to surmount, and both Apple and Arm are moving at a breakneck pace that appears to exceed AMD and Intel. TSMC is now the great equalizer of the semiconductor industry – anyone can build a chip on its leading-edge nodes. With a level playing process node playing field, the advantage turns to companies that can execute quickly on their respective architectures. AMD will have its Zen 4 chips on the 5nm node in market by the end of 2022, but that seems to be a far-off timeline in the face of Apple's first 5nm PC chips that landed today. Meanwhile, Arm has its V1 platform for the data center that supports either 5nm or 7nm today, and plans for its N2 platform on 5nm to land in 2021. Looking a year beyond that, Arm plans for Poseidon to support 3nm in 2022 and beyond. Neither AMD nor Intel have plans to be on these (or equivalent) process nodes within the same time frame, putting x86 at a considerable disadvantage. All that's left for Arm is to build out the software ecosystem, and that's where Apple and Nvidia's oddly parallel efforts come into play. Once the software ecosystem catches up, Arm's momentum with denser process nodes may prove to be insurmountable. That has implications for all facets of the x86 empire, from servers to desktop and laptop PCs, and there's no doubt that a widespread migration to Arm could drastically alter the PC market as x86 looks to fend of its most potent threat in recent history.
  15. Google’s Android Auto platform has seen some pretty big updates over the past year, and now it seems another major update is on the horizon. In Android Auto v5.8, Google is laying the groundwork for supporting wallpapers and more. About APK Insight: In this ‘APK Insight’ post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in the case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on. Android Auto wallpapers Since the platform’s debut, Android Auto has always lacked any real customization. The latest interface has the ability to change the layout of app icons, but that’s about it. Following an update to Apple’s CarPlay, which enabled support for custom wallpapers, though, it seems Google is about to go down the same route. In Android Auto v5.8, we can see that Google is laying the groundwork for wallpapers. A collection of strings in the app point towards a collection of preset wallpapers by the names ofBlack Blobs Mountains Droplets Dusk Warp Wave While the setting is not yet live in the app itself, we were able to extract the wallpapers — notably, some of the names don’t line up with the list — from the latest Android Auto app. The current default wallpaper is included, but the rest of the collection adds some colors. What about custom wallpapers? Unfortunately, there’s no concrete evidence that Google will allow this yet. One string mentions “custom_wallpaper_selection_title,” but it seems very likely this is just referring to users being able to choose from the several options. In any case, this is a step in the right direction. Custom Google Assistant shortcuts It also looks like custom Assistant shortcuts are also inching closer to release. We first spotted this feature back in Android Auto v5.7, but in v5.8, more strings appear to give us better insight as to what’s coming. Android Auto’s homescreen supports a handful of Assistant shortcuts for reminders, calendar appointments, and more. Soon, though, you’ll be able to create custom shortcuts from scratch. In this latest version of the app, we can see that Google is preparing this functionality with the ability to customize the name, the launcher icon, and the command handed off to Google Assistant. Alternatively, the custom shortcut can also call a specific contact. The folks over at XDA were able to get the feature working, but it’s not enabled by default for users right now. Google Assistant Routines may return If you’ll recall, Google revealed earlier this year that Assistant Routines aren’t officially supported on Android Auto. That was a strange revelation given the feature worked back in 2018, but it was what it was. That may change soon, though. In v5.8, Google alludes to routines being supported again with a brief paragraph. “Turn on the porch lights. Read the last message I received. Start my morning commute routine.” This one could go either way, but obviously we’re hoping to see Assistant routines get a proper return. VPN block Interestingly, there’s also a notice being prepared in the Android Auto app that explains that VPN’s may block Android Auto from properly working. Being connected to a VPN may prevent Android Auto from starting. If you’re using a VPN, turn it off and try reconnecting to Android Auto. Kyle Bradshaw contributed to this article. 16. Why on Earth are we trying to hurry? It is not good to be lazy or procrastinate, but what’s required is slowing down. Slow living lifestyle helps calm nerves, make deep personal connections, and, paradoxically, allows way more time than when we are frantically moving around. One has to recognize that slowing down is a choice open to all. Even if you are busy, there are always ways to take it easy. You can start small and make your life fulfilling. This slow-living phenomenon has roots in the Slow Food movement, started by Carlo Petrini in the 1980s, in Italy. Slow living expands on the simple idea of slowing down enough to enjoy life – from eating meals to the way of working to spending free time. Reconsider commute One way to embrace slowness and empower sustainability is by modifying or even doing away with a traditional commute. You could ride a bike or scooter – or even walk – to work instead of driving. Using public transportation instead of your own vehicle, or asking your supervisor about telecommuting a few days each week is a reasonable enough option. Exploring other work opportunities – closer to home – if your current work situation requires a lengthy journey is another way to opt for a breather. Or if this isn’t possible, you could always leave early to avoid traffic jams. Use your commute time to listen to a meditation recording, refreshing music, or audio book for overcoming stress. Spend free time on a hobby rather than on Google Instead of checking email, continually updating social media, or even shopping online, spend your time on a hobby. These online activities can take up a lot of time if we let them! We’re simply choosing to spend our free time online rather than doing something productive. It will help connect to yourself and increase productivity. Knit or play an instrument or write – devote one evening a week to what will help you slow live through life. A little boredom is okay Thich Nhat Hanh – a spiritual leader and peace activist – writes in his book Planting Seeds, that it is actually quite difficult to be lazy. “Not doing anything, just enjoying ourselves and whatever is around us, is a very deep practice. All of us have an energy within that constantly pushes us to do this or that. We cannot sit or lie still and enjoy ourselves or the beautiful sky. If we aren’t doing something, we can’t stand it.” Choose to not always rush off into a new activity. Instead, pay close attention to the colour of the sky, your feelings, the people around you. Slow parenting benefits both parties Rushing from school to sports, to after-school activities, and then spending the remaining time on homework or looking at a screen, kids eventually get stressed out and run-down. The same is true for parents chauffeuring and catering to them. Making room in the daily schedule for screen-free, unstructured time is very important to help everyone relax. Creative pursuits, such as using art supplies, woodblocks and building materials, and regular trips to the garden or exploring a nearby nature area will go a long way in helping you enjoy and relish life. At the same time, your kids might learn a thing or two about their environment. Make from scratch Making something you would normally buy brings satisfaction, costs very little, and can easily replace more typical and expensive forms of entertainment. It can be a collaborative activity, enough to include your family or friends, thus adding up to the memory drawer! Bake bread, brew coffee/tea, make jam, knit, try to create your own soap or scrub, or sew some cloth napkins. Sharing reduces your ecological footprint By spending with others, you share your footprint with theirs. At home with your family, being together in one room, cooking and eating together, or being entertained together, the amount of energy used is greatly reduced compared to when everyone is acting separately. This includes the energy consumed by cooling/heating, lighting, electronics, and cooking appliances. When people assemble, they merge their energy use. Sustainability supports an individual’s choice of slow living. Voluntary simplicity – a practice where the focus is on having less but experiencing life more – is representative of sustainability. The benefits of simple living are significant. Shedding the produce-and-consume way of life, you are able to focus more on aspects that support well-being like self-improvement, relationships, and pursuit of the meaning of life. You don’t often get to experience such important parts of life in urban set-ups, given that the hubbub of rushed life steals away most of your ‘me time’. However, usually travelling to health resorts or countryside immediately has that soothing effect. You tend to appreciate simple living more. People from villages are mostly not aware of new technological advancements and continue living their lives in the lap of nature, taking their time, with no social media to overwhelm them. Thus, they invest energy in grooming their health and soul to the best of their capabilities. They are, in fact, way healthy than the city folk. Being with them and settling into their habits makes you more serene inside out! Slow living promotes health and sustainability. It encourages walking or cycling over automobiles. It promotes fresh local food over processed food. Sustainability assists in having warm, dry homes that ward off illness. It also supports the use of harmless natural products over synthetic ones. The whole society also benefits from slow living. If individuals are healthy, it will help make a robust society. Sustainable practices also include sharing, providing, and supporting each other – to achieve higher levels of social well-being in allcommunities. Social consumption It not only helps you save energy but can increase your happiness too. Studies have shown that people are filled with positive energy when actively engaged in social, cultural, and creative experiences – more than if they are consuming mindless entertainment alone. In-person interaction is not always easy. However, even just having a good conversation, is more enjoyable than being alone. The major reason is that you’ve to put some effort into it. With the pandemic switching our priorities, people have – even more so – realized the importance of social circles and human interactions that are not done over virtual networks. We must never forget the importance of human touch. Machines might replace the physical presence of human beings but they can never provide the same emotional closeness. Using these lessons as true mantras for a fulfilling life, we must act together, eat together, and spend time in each other’s company – to conserve energy, promote sustainability, and improve our living standards.
  17. Sunshine has returned across Minnesota for Veterans Day after Tuesday’s snow, but the rest of the week remains active with additional rain and snow chances. Tuesday’s snowfall impacted most of the state, from southern and central Minnesota, up through the Arrowhead. The highest amount of snow was near Brainerd, with a couple reports of 9 and 10 inches. There were also similar reports near Grand Rapids. For the Twin Cities area, there were many reports of 4 or 5 inches, although the east side of the metro missed much of the snow. Even though skies have cleared, be prepared for lingering slick spots Wednesday. Another cold front As the snow moved out late Tuesday, skies cleared quickly, allowing temperatures to drop overnight. Because of this, most of the state started in the teens and low 20s Wednesday morning, although a couple spots in northern Minnesota dropped into the single digits. Considering the chilly start, temperatures warmup reasonably well, with highs expected in the mid-30s north to a few 40s west. his is near to slightly below average for the middle of November. Plentiful sunshine continues for most of the state through Wednesday. However, northern Minnesota can expect more clouds in the afternoon, along with light snow as an area of low pressure starts moving in. A little rain likely mixes in with the snow during the afternoon, when temperatures are above freezing. That low pressure also moves a cold front across the state from late Wednesday through Thursday morning, which brings a more widespread snow chance to central and southern Minnesota Thursday. The snow accumulation will be limited, under an inch for most places, and includes light snow chances for the Twin Cities Thursday morning through early afternoon. That front cools temperatures slightly, so highs Thursday will be only in the 20s north and 30s south. Extended forecast More sunshine returns Friday, but temperatures remain cool, with highs in the 30s. By the weekend, much of Minnesota could see a few 40s again, which would be closer to average for mid-November. Another weather system also moves through over the weekend. The timing is still a little uncertain, but it brings rain and snow chances Saturday into early Sunday. The precipitation will be mixed due to the slightly milder temperatures, and currently it appears the rain and snow should remain light. Here is that forecast for the Twin Cities : Twin Cities forecast through SundayNational Weather Service Next week turns milder, with more 40s and probably a few 50s by midweek. Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow veterans! Programming note You can hear my live weather updates on Minnesota Public Radio at 7:48 a.m. Monday through Friday morning. Your support matters.

  20. Overcooked: All You Can Eat bundles the two games and all DLC together in one remastered package on PlayStation 5. The collection will be available on the next-gen system from day one, and it sounds like it's really taking advantage of the new hardware. In addition to more detailed levels, 4K support, and 60 frames-per-second performance, publisher Team 17 has detailed how the game utilises the DualSense PS5 controller. In this co-op cooking game, it's important to know who's who onscreen. With the DualSense's light bar, which surrounds the touch pad, you'll be able to see at a glance which colour player you are. This was the case on PS4, but the new position of the light bar makes this a much more useful feature. Additionally, you'll be able to swipe your finger across the touchpad to select from a series of emotes. The game will also be making use of the DualSense controller's built-in speaker, broadcasting in-game alerts to players through their pads as well as the TV. Most importantly, though, haptic feedback is being used for numerous things. The PlayStation Blog post describes being able to "feel" your food burning, which will certainly be alarming. Furthermore, the haptic feedback will tell you where something is happening by localising the sensation to one spot on the controller. "It may be all calm on one side of the kitchen but if a pan is on fire on the other side, your DualSense wireless controller will tell you," says the blog post. All sorts of things will trigger the haptics, such as burning food, fires, when food is ready, when you catch an item thrown to you, and more. We're looking forward to getting back in the kitchen with Overcooked: All You Can Eat on PS5. Will you be dining on this one? Have a bite to eat in the comments section below.

Google Workspace : Collaboration + productivity apps There are many different office software suites but Google Workspace formerly known as G Suite remains the original cloud one and one of the best business office suites, offering a huge range of features and functionality that rivals can't match. Try it free for 14 days. The best Microsoft Office alternatives can increase office productivity. Microsoft Office remains the most po[CENSORED]r productivity suite for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more - whether as a download software package, or as the cloud-based Microsoft 365 suite - through powerful apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, Outlook, and more. However, a range of alternative competitors have become increasingly attractive, not least because of more price-competitive licensing fees, and some are free to use. However, paying less, or nothing, doesn't necessarily mean that the software is of lower quality, as the open source community can testify. Yet there can be issues with sharing documents between different office suite platforms, which can be a real concern. This is why when choosing an alternative to Microsoft Office, you need to be certain of any shortfalls that might limit your use of the software, especially if you need to share or collaborative on documents with other users who have one or more different office suites. If you're using the office alternative as a standalone piece of software there shouldn't be any such issues, but it is something to be mindful about if you end up changing to a different software suite. That said, the best in the Microsoft Office alternatives are generally strong programs with full functionality, and little problem sharing files with other platforms, though few come close to the full functionality of Microsoft 365 with it's cloud service bundle that includes OneDrive and Microsoft Teams. Here we'll show the best of them, along with their strengths and weaknesses.Best Microsoft Office alternatives - at a glance LibreOffice FreeOffice WPS Office Calligra OfficeSuite Polaris Office OnlyOffice WordPerfect Zoho Workplace Google Workplace LibreOffice is the offspring of The Document Foundation and split from OpenOffice in 2010. The suite itself is free and open source, and is made up of a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software, and is available in 110 languages. While LibreOffice uses the ODF (OpenDocument) format it still supports a range of other format types such as those used in Microsoft Office. LibreOffice is the default suite for most Linux distros and it is also available for use on Windows and macOS. There's also a LibreOffice viewer for Android. As with most open source software all your technical support comes from online, but seeing how easy this is to use, support will be rarely needed. The platform also offers the option to export your files into PDF format amongst others. You can add extra features to LibreOffice via extensions from its website. These include extra templates for documents. If you are looking for a free and easy alternative to Microsoft Office, then FreeOffice is the suite for you. The company, SoftMaker, has been developing office software since 1987 and its office suite is their flagship product. FreeOffice is a complete office suite that is free to use for both home and in the workplace. It is developed for both Windows and Linux, and offers a basic version for Android users. The suite itself is fully compatible with all Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats. This means that you can not only view but save files in formats such as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. It also supports older file types such as PPT and XLS. The new interface that was launched this year gives you the option of either working with modern or classic menus and toolbars. This makes switching from Microsoft Office easy to do as the interface is eerily similar. For those users who have the luxury of a touchscreen PC you can use touch mode with larger icons. This mode is available for both the newer version look and the classic menu-based interface. WPS Office was released in 2016 by Chinese software developer Kingsoft. It is an office suite that is available for Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. The suite is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Russian. It offers a free and a premium tier. The free tier allows you to use Writer, Presentation and Spreadsheets, which are alternatives to the Microsoft Office suite which it also resembles closely. WPS offers a PDF to Word converter which is fast and easy to use. It supports bulk exportation and can also split-merge PDF files if needed. The suite offers 1GB of free cloud storage for iOS and PC users, but this service is not yet available for Android. The 'Premium' tier allows the user to connect up 9 devices at once. It also gets rids of all those annoying adverts that are commonplace on the free tier. WPS has been criticised for not allowing collaboration beyond those that track changes and allow users to insert comments. Users have also said that the interface can be quite slow at times when it comes to loading documents. Linux users have mentioned that not all fonts are automatically included and that they have to be installed separately. For Android users installation is quite large and criticism has been levelled imploring the developer to make it more lightweight.

  25. A Toronto MP is leaving the Liberal caucus after CBC News found she had employed her sister in her constituency office for years using public funds— a violation of parliamentary rules. Yasmin Ratansi announced her departure late Monday on Facebook. "I made an error in judgment by employing my sister in my constituency office, and I have remedied the situation, but this does not excuse the error I made," she wrote. Ratansi said she will continue sitting as an Independent, representing her constituents in Don Valley East, and will "await guidance" from the ethics commissioner. The statement comes more than 30 hours after CBC News asked her office for comment on the issue. Several former staffers told CBC News Ratansi tried to cover up the relationship by having her sister use a fake first name and telling some staff to keep their family connection quiet. "I think it's horrific that a member of Parliament that's entrusted to behave honourable and ethically can get away with impunity," said a former employee. "It really questions the integrity of the institutions." Ratansi, a backbencher, is a trained accountant and became the first Muslim woman elected to the House of Commons in 2004. She lost the seat in 2011 and won it back in 2015. Ratansi is the chair of the standing committee on environment and used to be the vice-chair of the committee overseeing federal government departments' expenses. Her sister Zeenat Khatri has worked as her constituency assistant for much of her time in office, according to six former staffers. During her early years as an MP, it was against the rules to hire "immediate family" including parents, spouses and children, but not siblings. That changed in 2012 when the House's Board of Internal Economy updated its bylaws, said House director of communications Heather Bradley. MPs have their own operating budget and are allowed to pay constituency assistants a maximum salary of $89,700 a year, according to the House of Commons. That means Ratansi could have paid her sister up to $267,000 for three years of salary. 'Blatant disregard' Multiple sources said Ratansi employed her sister from at least 2005 to 2011, then hired her again in 2017. But that time, said the sources, Ratansi and Khatri told staff to call her "Jenny" rather than Zeenat — a name she hadn't used in the office before. CBC News has seen one business card bearing the name "Jenny Khatri." "Yasmin told us explicitly — my sister will be coming to work in our office," said that same former employee. "She was going to assume a different name, so she was going to be referred to as Jenny. "The idea was we bring her in but try to conceal her identity, keep her hidden, keep her tucked away so that people don't find out that her sister is employed in the office." CBC News spoke to five former employees who worked for Ratansi's office between 2015 and present and a sixth person who worked for her more than a decade ago. They spoke on condition of confidentiality, citing fear of retaliation from Ratansi herself and of potential harm to their careers. Two former employees said Ratansi and Khatri went to great lengths to cover up their family connection from constituents. "The fact that she hired her sister and it's against the rules ... it just feels wrong, it is unethical and blatant disregard of the rules," said another former staff member. Multiple former employees said they saw Khatri hide in a spare office when members of the public came in. They said Khatri was worried that a volunteer or constituent might recognize her as Ratansi's sister. Sources also said Khatri instructed some employees to make sure she wasn't photographed at public events — unless she was attending as a family member rather than as Ratansi's constituency assistant. "You might not like it, but you're bound to sort of keep that secret, or else," said one former staffer. "We were forced to, as staff members, to basically be complicit in unethical behaviour … it hurts to basically choke that down and not say anything." Other staffers claim they were kept in the dark. One former employee said they believed the pair were not related and, when told that Ratansi and Khatri are siblings, said "the wool was pulled over my eyes." As of Monday, Khatri was still listed as Ratansi's constituency assistant on the government's online directory. More than 24 hours after CBC News asked Ratansi for comment, her Liberal website had been taken down. 'It's a hard day' says government whip Chief government whip Mark Holland said he was not aware of the issue until contacted by CBC News on Monday. He said the House rules are clear and it's "essential they be respected." "We try to have rigorous systems and processes but clearly this was not caught and now it has to go to the ethics commissioner to figure out what the appropriate restitution is," he told CBC News. "It's a hard day. I was elected in 2004 with Yasmin, so it's a very difficult day. But I think taking responsibility for her lapse in judgment, stepping away from caucus … these are the right steps." Chris MacDonald, an associate professor who teaches business ethics at the Ted Rogers School of Management in Toronto, says there are good reasons why the public frowns on nepotism and expects public figures to hire on merit. He said the claim that Ratansi covered up her sister's hiring is more troubling than the hiring itself. He said it suggests a guilty mind and an attempt to keep information from constituents and voters. "Once there is an attempt to cover it up, then it makes it pretty clear that even the person doing the hiring realizes there's something fishy here," he said. "If these allegations are true, it's a disturbing picture of abuse of power, of a misuse of a position that involves trust and public resources."
