  1. https://www.cnbc.com/video/2017/11/21/tesla-semi-may-be-aiming-at-the-wrong-end-of-the-truck-market.html Electric trucks could sell faster than cars, but Tesla may be aiming at the wrong end of the heavy-duty truck market, says a new report. Mounting regulatory pressure and future policy changes may push freight carriers to adopt lower-emission power trains in their vehicles, said Barclays analyst Michael Cohen in a note sent Monday. But Tesla's recently unveiled semitrailer might be aimed at the segment of the market that will likely be the slowest to transition to electric drivetrains. Constraints on price, range and payload capacity suggest the long-haul market may be the last to embrace electric trucks, after urban freight and other shorter-range, lighter-duty vehicle markets. Overall, heavy-duty trucks are big polluters. Though they only make up 10 percent of all vehicles on the road and 20 percent of all miles driven, freight trucks emit about 40 percent of all vehicle emissions, Cohen said. This makes the sector difficult to ignore for politicians seeking to reduce emissions. Indeed, more than 200 cities have some kind of emissions regulation, and major cities such as Madrid, Paris, London and Mexico City have already announced bans on diesel engines, which could rapidly accelerate interest in electrics, Cohen said. Also, U.S. regulations are set to improve fuel efficiency for tractors by 25 percent through 2027. Starting in 2019, China will begin tightening fuel consumption limits for heavy-duty trucks by almost 15 percent. The European Union plans to develop a carbon dioxide standard for heavy-duty vehicles in the first half of 2018. All of these are signs that policy changes may matter more in the adoption of electric vehicles in freight than they will in the widespread adoption of electric cars. "In our view, greater attention should be paid to developments in the freight sector than to those in the personal vehicle sector, for two reasons: policy could drive the adoption tipping point for freight vehicles more quickly than for personal vehicles, and the total cost of ownership and a faster turnover rate could drive freight truck fleet owners to adopt EVs more quickly than passenger vehicle owners," Cohen said. Tesla's own entry "creates much optimism for EV adoption," Cohen said, "but displacing oil in long-haul trucking has the most daunting cost and technological challenges of all segments. Due to weight and range constraints, EVs will likely enter the light/medium weight and urban/regional markets first, and the heavy, long-haul sector (including semi trucks) last." Some other companies in this area are focusing on these other markets, fitting electric motors and batteries into garbage trucks and city buses, rather than long-haul trucks. Industry veteran and Tesla co-founder Ian Wright told CNBC long-haul trucking is a tougher market for electric than shorter-range, light- and medium-duty trucking. "I was a little surprised they were targeting long-haul trucks, because that is the worst thing you can do with a battery electric [vehicle]," Wright said. Wright is now founder and CEO of Wrightspeed, a company that makes very low-emission power trains that blend electric motors and batteries with a small, highly efficient diesel generator. Tesla was not immediately available for comment. One of the problems with using electric for longer range is that as range climbs, so does the size of the battery. This in turn increases the truck's weight and lessens the amount of cargo the truck can handle. Wrightspeed's own customers tend to operate fleets of lighter, smaller trucks that work more on a local level. For example, the company has made powertrains for FedEx and for garbage trucks in at least two counties in northern California. Tesla did not disclose the total weight of its truck, which is a key piece of information, said Stifel analyst Michael Baudendistel in a note sent Sunday. "Disclosing the vehicle range without the weight really tells us very little," Baudendistel said. "We think it is reasonable to believe there may be a 10,000-pound battery pack in the Tesla tractor with a 500-mile range, or a 700 kWh battery pack." While removing the diesel engine could go some way to offsetting battery weight, "a battery pack of that size would almost certainly cut into the payload capacity of the truck," he said.

  2. Explosions and gunfire were heard in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, on Wednesday as counterterrorism units stormed a multi-storey apartment building on the outskirts of the city. Georgia's state security service said that unidentified number of suspects holed up in one of the apartments opened fire on the troops that were conducting a large-scale operation in the area. The heavy metal door to the suspects' apartment on the third floor was yet to be forced open 20 hours since the start of the operation. At least one security officer was shot in the head. A doctor at the hospital where he received an emergency surgery told the reporters outside the facility that the patient was in a critical condition. Nino Giorgobiani, the deputy head of administration at Georgia's state security service, said at a news conference that one suspect was arrested on Wednesday during the operation and the attempt to capture the rest of the suspects alive was ongoing. "According to the preliminary information they are not Georgian nationals and they are members of a terrorist organisation," she said. "It is important to note, that Georgia's counter-terrorism department has been conducting negotiations with them for several hours about surrendering but they rejected it. "The members of the criminal group opened fire from an automatic rifle and threw hand grenades. The gunfire resulted in an injury of a member of the special force." She also said that an investigation into the identities and alleged criminal links of the suspects was under way in and outside Georgia. The security services are also looking into the Austria-based Georgian owner of the apartment that was rented by the suspects. The son of the owner who was questioned by the police in Tbilisi denied any links to the suspects, according to Rustavi 2 television. Government's criticism The Georgian government held an emergency security meeting, but did not public statements on the ongoing situation. The prolonged operation prompted criticism of the government from its political rivals. "It is obvious that surveillance and planning of the operation were flawed. Neutralising one apartment should not have taken more than two hours," said Nika Rurua, a member of National Movement opposition party. "There is a serious security problem in the country first of all from a surveillance aspect. These people have been in the building for more than two years and there is a big amount of weaponry in the apartment."

  3. The 2018 Audi A5 ranks 1 out of 20 Luxury Small Cars. The 2018 Audi A5 is completely redesigned this model year – and the changes are for the better. After finishing in the middle of our luxury small car rankings last year, the A5 is now among the elite vehicles in the class. Audi A5 Rankings and Research The 2018 Audi A5 ranking is based on its score within the Luxury Small Cars category. Currently the Audi A5 has a score of 9.3 out of 10 which is based on our evaluation of 22 pieces of research and data elements using various sources. The 2018 Audi A5 is completely redesigned this model year – and the changes are for the better. After finishing in the middle of our luxury small car rankings last year, the A5 is now among the elite vehicles in the class. Is the Audi A5 a Good Car? The redesigned Audi A5 is an excellent vehicle. This car has powerful engines and handles well, while still getting pretty good gas mileage. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and the features list is longer than a giraffe’s neck. There are three body styles to choose from: coupe, convertible, and hatchback. The coupe and convertible have undersized rear seats and small trunks, but the hatchback – with its four full passenger doors – has no such issues. The 2018 A5 is just the latest Audi to feature an attractive, high-end cabin. Should I Buy the Audi A5? In case the paragraph above didn’t make it clear, this is definitely a vehicle that belongs on your shopping list. With three body styles, this car can appeal to virtually every buyer. However, your buying decision will also bring value into question, as the A5 has one of the highest base prices in the class. If you’re looking for a car that’s clearly better than this Audi, you can go ahead and give up because you won’t find one. But if you’re looking for a car that measures up to the A5 and also costs a bit less, then there are some options out there. The BMW 4 Series is another luxury small car that blends performance with interior comfort. It comes in the same three body styles and costs about the same as the A5. The Audi A4 is also incredibly similar to the A5 in nearly every respect, but its starting price is thousands less. Compare the A5, 4 Series, and A4 » We Did the Research for You: 16 Reviews Analyzed Instead of undertaking the tedious task of researching your next vehicle, just look at the research we’ve already done for you. We base our unbiased, expert car reviews on a combination of professional test driver opinions and data like safety and reliability ratings. The Audi A5 is completely redesigned for 2018. Why You Can Trust Us U.S. News & World Report has been ranking cars for a decade, and our team has more than 75 years’ worth of combined experience in the automotive industry. To ensure our objectivity, our editorial staff doesn’t accept expensive gifts or trips from automakers, and all the advertising on our site is handled by a third party. How Much Does the Audi A5 Cost? The Audi A5 has a starting price of $42,600, which is one of the highest in the class. The Sportback is the standard body style. A coupe model costs about $200 more, and cabriolet (convertible) models cost at least $6,800 more. There are three trim levels: Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Prestige trim is the highest, and it has a starting price of just over $50,000. Check out our U.S. News Best Price Program for great savings at your local Audi dealer. You can also find excellent manufacturer incentives on our Audi deals page. Audi A5 Versus the Competition Which Is Better: Audi A5 or BMW 4 Series? Like the A5, the BMW 4 Series is available in coupe, convertible, and hatchback body styles. The 4 Series blends performance and luxury, but it’s weighted toward performance. It is one of the most agile cars in the class, and its engines deliver good power. Fuel economy between these German rivals is about the same. The cabin is nice, though it doesn’t feel quite as upscale as the A5’s, and the Audi also has a longer features list. The BMW offers more cargo space, but it’s also one of the few cars in the class that costs more than the A5. These are both excellent choices, but the A5 is a better overall vehicle, and it costs slightly less. Which Is Better: Audi A5 or Audi A4? The Audi A4 is basically the A5’s little brother. Both have been recently redesigned and feature opulent cabins with plenty of standard and available features. Both are comfortable up front, but the A4’s rear seats feel a bit more spacious than the A5’s. The A4’s trunk is also larger than the trunks of the A5 coupe and convertible models. The A4 is a sedan, and it has a much lower starting price. The two are quite similar in terms of performance, offering the same engines, similar fuel economy, and excellent handling. Choosing between the two will largely boil down to personal preference. Compare the A5, 4 Series, and A4 » A5 Interior How Many People Does the A5 Seat? A5 Sportback models seat five, while coupe and cabriolet models seat four. In any body style, the front seats are outstanding. They’re comfortable and supportive, and drivers have good visibility. The rear seats are a tight squeeze in four-seat A5s, but they have ample legroom in the Sportback. A5 and Car Seats There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the A5. A5 Interior Quality Audis are known for having outstanding interiors, and the 2018 A5 won’t disappoint. Climb inside and enjoy the handsome cabin and abundance of soft-touch materials. A5 Cargo Space The amount of cargo space in the A5 is all about which body style you choose. Coupe models have a below-average 11.6 cubic feet of trunk room, and that drops to a maximum of just over 9 cubic feet in cabriolet models. You can fit six to eight grocery bags in those trunks, but they’re too small for luggage. Sportback models, on the other hand, have outstanding cargo space – over 21 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and about 35 cubic feet with them folded. Either way, you’ll have enough room for more than a dozen carry-on bags – and you can even fit larger items if you fold the seats down. A5 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation Standard features in the A5 include Bluetooth, two USB ports, a 10-speaker audio system, a 7-inch driver information system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Audi’s MMI infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen and voice control. Available features include satellite radio, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, navigation, and an upgraded MMI system with an 8.3-inch screen and handwriting recognition. Audi Connect, which provides in-vehicle Wi-Fi and gives you the flexibility to connect up to eight devices, is also available. The A5 comes standard with useful connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the MMI infotainment system is easy to use. For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? Then, see the Best Cars With Apple CarPlay and Best Cars With Android Auto. The available Virtual Cockpit has a large screen mounted directly behind the steering wheel in place of traditional gauges, and it combines typical gauge cluster information and the infotainment screen in one easy-to-see location. A5 Performance A5 Engine: Lively Powertrains The A5 features a 252-horsepower turbo-four engine that accelerates quickly and feels energetic whether you’re driving around town or on the highway. If you want more power, step up to the S5. It features a 354-horsepower turbocharged V6 and delivers the kind of power and acceleration you’d normally associate with a sports car. A5 Gas Mileage: Reasonably Efficient This Audi earns 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Those are decent ratings for a nonhybrid luxury small car. You’ll spend about as much on gas with the A5 as you would with rivals like the Audi A4 and BMW 4 Series. A5 Ride and Handling: Uno, Dos, Tres, Quattro Thanks to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, the A5 has excellent road grip. This Audi also remains poised while turning. Thanks to its sport suspension, the S5 is even more agile. Both have strong brakes, though the steering lacks feel at times. Ride quality is good over almost any road surface. Read more about performance » A5 Reliability Is the Audi A5 Reliable? The Audi A5 is redesigned for the 2018 model year. As such, it does not yet have a predicted reliability rating from J.D. Power and Associates. Audi A5 Warranty Audi backs the A5 with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty. Most other luxury vehicles have similar warranty terms. Read more about reliability » A5 Safety A5 Crash Test Results The 2018 A5 earns a perfect five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has not yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A5 Safety Features Standard active safety features include a rearview camera, Pre Sense Basic, and Pre Sense City. Available features include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, and Pre Sense Rear. The Pre Sense system helps protect occupants in the event of an impending collision by automatically rolling up the windows and tightening seat belts. Read more about safety » Which Audi A5 Model Is Right for Me? The A5 comes in three body styles and three trims. The A5 Sportback, which is the hatchback body style, is the least expensive of the three. Upgrading to the coupe will cost an extra $200. Upgrading to the cabriolet will cost an extra $7,000 in the A5 and $7,900 in the S5. The S5 has a more powerful engine and other performance-related upgrades over the A5, but the two are pretty similar in terms of features. Unless you really want the extra power, you’ll be fine with the A5. When it comes to choosing the right trim, it’s really about how many features you want. The top Prestige trim is available with almost every feature you can get in an A5. However, the Premium Plus offers nearly as many features and has a starting price about $5,000 less than the Prestige, making it a great value. Audi A5 Premium The A5 Premium has a base price of $42,600. In addition to the standard features, several options packages are available. The Convenience package ($900) adds a hands-free power trunk release and satellite radio. The Navigation and Telematics package ($3,000) adds the Virtual Cockpit and the upgraded MMI system with navigation and a larger screen. Heated front seats are available for an extra $500. Audi A5 Premium Plus The A5 Premium Plus starts at $45,600. It includes everything in the Premium trim and comes with heated front seats, a hands-free trunk release, and Pre Sense Rear. The Navigation package is available in this trim also, though it costs $400 less. The Warm Weather package ($1,300) adds ventilated front seats and front sport seats. A heated steering wheel (in coupe models), ventilated front seats, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system can all be added individually for $200 to $950. Audi A5 Prestige The A5 Prestige has a starting price of $50,200. In addition to the Premium Plus trim’s features, the Prestige comes with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, a head-up display, navigation, a 360-degree camera system, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. The A5 Prestige is offered with a heated steering wheel ($200 in coupe models), ventilated front seats ($800), and the Warm Weather package ($1,300). It also offers the Driver Assistance package ($1,800), which adds adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and lane keep assist. Audi S5 Premium Plus The S5 Premium Plus starts at $54,400. S5 models feature a 354-horsepower V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a sport suspension. The S5 Premium Plus’s standard and optional features are largely the same as in the A5 Premium Plus, though the S5 version offers a few extras like Nappa leather upholstery ($1,250), dynamic steering ($1,150), and the S Sport package ($2,500), which includes a sport adaptive damping suspension and a sport rear differential. Audi S5 Prestige The S5 Prestige has a starting price of $58,800. The S5 Prestige has the same features lineup as the A5 Prestige. However, as with the Premium Plus trim, the S5 Prestige offers a few options the A5 doesn’t, including Nappa leather upholstery, dynamic steering, and the S Sport package. 4. An Israeli cabinet minister said on Sunday that Israel has had covert contacts with Saudi Arabia amid common concerns over Iran, a first disclosure by a senior official from either country of long-rumoured secret dealings. The Saudi government had no immediate response to Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz's remarks. A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also did not respond immediately to a request to comment. Both Saudi Arabia and Israel view Iran as a main threat to the Middle East and increased tension between Tehran and Riyadh has fuelled speculation that shared interests may push Saudi Arabia and Israel to work together. Saudi Arabia maintains that any relations with Israel hinge on Israeli withdrawal from Arab lands captured in the 1967 Middle East war, territory Palestinians seek for a future state. U.S. President Donald Trump's peace envoys, seeking an Israeli-Palestinian agreement with regional support, have visited Saudi Arabia several times since he took office. In an interview on Army Radio, Steinitz, a member of Netanyahu's security cabinet, did not characterise the contacts or give details when asked why Israel was "hiding its ties" with Saudi Arabia. He replied: "We have ties that are indeed partly covert with many Muslim and Arab countries, and usually (we are) the party that is not ashamed. "It's the other side that is interested in keeping the ties quiet. With us, usually, there is no problem, but we respect the other side's wish, when ties are developing, whether it's with Saudi Arabia or with other Arab countries or other Muslim countries, and there is much more ... (but) we keep it secret." In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir, asked about reports of cooperation with Israel, cited a Saudi peace initiative, first adopted in 2002 by the Arab League, as key to forging any relationship. "We have always said that if the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved on the basis of the Arab peace initiative that Israel would have enjoyed normal relations, economic, political, diplomatic relations with all of the Arab countries, and so until that happens, we don't have relations with Israel," he said. That plan makes those relations contingent on a full withdrawal by Israel from territory it captured in the 1967 Middle East war, including East Jerusalem. Netanyahu has expressed tentative support for parts of the initiative, but there are many caveats on the Israeli side.

  8. In last week’s report from The Century Foundation (TCF) analyzing fraud complaints from student loan borrowers, Yan Cao and Tariq Habash identify the companies and colleges that have generated the most borrower requests for loan cancellation based on fraud by the school. Most of the complaints—more than 98 percent of them—are about for-profit colleges. And the schools with the most complaints are the for-profit colleges that have been on the radar screen of law enforcement and consumer advocates for some time, including Corinthian Colleges, ITT Tech, DeVry, the Art Institutes, University of Phoenix, Westwood, and Kaplan University. Among the fifty-two companies with twenty complaints or more, there are five nonprofit institutions (no public ones). Some of those nonprofit schools were known bad actors, too, like Everglades College and Remington College, which were both featured in TCF’s 2015 report, “The Covert For-Profit.” Covert for-profit colleges claim to be nonprofit but continue to be controlled by people with a direct or indirect financial interest in maximizing the school’s revenues. Remington College, for example, is controlled by an Arkansas investment firm, Stephens Inc., which uses offshore trusts and shell companies to dodge taxes, as the New York Times revealed last week as part of its ongoing investigation of the Paradise Papers.1 But Wright Career College—the nonprofit with the most borrower defense claims as of August 15, 2017—was a sleeper until it emerged in the complaint data.2 Wright Career College was the business name of Mission Group Kansas, Inc., a nonprofit corporation. Wright enrolled three thousands students at five campuses in Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma in the 2014–15 academic year.3 By October 2014, 199 of its former students had come forward to sue the school, alleging that Wright “entices prospective students to enroll and apply for student loans they cannot pay back through a systematic, deceptive marketing scheme.”4 Wright initially denied wrongdoing, pointing to its accreditation by Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), which was then a government-recognized accreditor.5 But then, in April 2016, the college shut its doors and sought bankruptcy protection.6 Insurers for Wright and Mission Group Kansas eventually paid $3 million to settle the former students’ claims.7 Our post-mortem research on the school reveals that while Wright claimed to be operating as a nonprofit, it may have actually been one of the earliest covert for-profit colleges participating in the federal student aid program. While Wright claimed to be operating as a nonprofit, it may have actually been one of the earliest covert for-profit colleges participating in the federal student aid program. Wright Career College got its start in 1989, when James Miller, Jr. gained a controlling interest in a school based in Kansas City, Missouri that he re-named Wright Business College, and later Wright Career College.8 The environment for for-profit higher education at the time was hostile; the Ronald Reagan administration had sounded the alarm over the outsized role that for-profit schools had played in the dramatic rise in defaults on student loans in the 1980s. Calling the behavior of for-profit schools shameful and tragic, Secretary of Education William Bennett wrote in a letter to Senator Edward Kennedy that investigations revealed stories of “semi-literate high school dropouts lured to enroll in expensive training programs with false promises of lucrative jobs, only to have their hopes for a better future cruelly dashed,” as well as “falsified scores on entrance exams, poor quality training, and harsh refund policies.”9 The scandals eventually led to reforms adopted by Congress and signed into law by George H. W. Bush in 1992. Among the 1992 reforms was a requirement aimed at ensuring that for-profit schools had at least some students who were affirming the value of the education by paying school costs out of pocket or with the help of employers. The so-called “85–15 Rule” required for-profit schools to show that at least 15 percent of their revenue came from sources other than federally funded Higher Education Act programs.10 Just before the 85–15 rule was about to take effect in 1994, Miller, the owner of Wright Career College, filed an application with the IRS to convert the school—which relied heavily on federal grants and loans—into a nonprofit that would not be subject to the requirement.11 In its application for tax-exempt status, the owners describe the impending 85–15 rule as the reason for their rush to convert. Word of this regulatory evasion tactic must have spread quickly, because Wright’s lawyers noted, in the school’s nonprofit application to the IRS, that they knew of “several other schools that recently converted.” A good-faith conversion to nonprofit control can be a good development for students and the public. Nonprofits commit all of their revenue to their educational or charitable purpose, and the adoption of nonprofit accountability is designed to eliminate the conflicts of interest that incentivize some for-profit school owners to overcharge students or under-invest in a school’s educational programs. In a legitimate nonprofit, the controlling board lacks ownership-like financial interests. But from its earliest years, rather than a having a financially disinterested board of trustees, much of Wright Career College’s board consisted of paid staff members, including James Miller himself, his former wife Gayle Miller, and John Mucci, all of whom continued to sit on the school’s governing body until it closed last year. James Miller served as CEO, Gayle Miller as vice president and then trustee, and John Mucci as president. Tax filings from 2014, uncovered in Mucci’s petition to reduce his alimony obligations, revealed that James Miller, Jr. ($743,295), Gayle Miller ($122,283), and John Mucci ($241,719) collectively paid themselves over $1 million from the budgets of Wright-related organizations, even as legal challenges mounted against the bankruptcy-bound school.12 Ronald Holt—a Missouri-based attorney who represents for-profit colleges and works closely with the national for-profit college lobbying organization13—also sat on the board continuously since 1997 and, in 1999, began intermittently receiving payment for both his time and legal guidance to Wright.14 As board members and employees, the Millers and other Wright affiliates could direct institutional funds into their own salaries while claiming tax-exempt status for the organizations they closely controlled. Wright Career College also contracted extensively with for-profit corporations owned by the college’s trustees. Between 2007 and 2013, Wright paid $14 million to the Miller-owned corporation Media Resources Inc. reportedly for advertising expenses, on top of the over $2.6 million paid directly to the couple as salaries during this period. In 2012, approximately 10 percent of Wright’s $37 million operating budget went into bank accounts the Millers controlled. In response to an inquiry from TCF, Wright’s attorney insisted that these expenditures were at or below market rates. In the 1994 back-and-forth between the IRS and Wright over the conversion, there was plenty of evidence that the owners were intent on maintaining ownership-like control. In three letters sent to Miller between September and November, specialist Rita Zasuly in the Dallas, Texas office of the IRS questioned the fairness of the financial appraisal Wright provided, pushed Miller to expand the nonprofit’s four-person board, and inquired about the independence of Wright’s outside contractors. In response to the IRS’s questions, Miller and his team made some changes to the organization’s proposal and promised to improve, especially concerning independent oversight.15 In particular, Miller’s team said in 1994 that the bylaws had been changed to expand the board to at least nine members, and that the organization “was attempting to fill” the five vacancies on the board. After this promise, as well as additional letters and phone calls, the IRS approved the group’s tax-exempt status. But it was not until 2011—seventeen years later—that Wright actually got around to meeting this promise. Conversion to nonprofit status accomplished Wright’s goal of skirting the 85–15 Rule, which would have limited the school’s reliance on federal aid, and the school took maximum advantage of this freedom. During the 2013–14 school year, a whopping 95 percent of first-time, full-time Wright students received federal Pell grants, compared to just a third on average at nonprofit institutions, 38 percent at public ones, and 74 percent at for-profits.16 Wright’s student loan default rate of 21 percent reported last year far exceeds both the national average of 12 percent, as well as the 16 percent average among for-profit institutions.17 The experience of Brian Wroten, a former student, illustrates why Wright’s default rates are high. Brian saw a television ad for Wright while he was recovering from cancer treatment. He enrolled after a recruiter told him that students graduated to starting salaries in the $60,000–$70,000 range, and that Brian would soon be making over $100,000. At Wright, Brian, who had worked as a certified electrician and in sales prior to enrolling, observed that many fellow students “couldn’t write legibly or do basic math.” After completing his courses, Brian learned that Wright recruiters had lied about his earning potential: medical employers were wary of Wright graduates, and even if he could find a medical technician job, starting salaries were actually in the range of $40,000—barely enough for Brian to stay current on his ballooning student debt. Brian fell back on his skills as a handyman, and describes Wright as “the biggest mistake of my life.”18 Based on data from the Department of Education and published by TCF, former Wright students like Brian filed forty-four fraud-based claims for debt relief as of August 15, 2017, making it the nonprofit school that has garnered the highest number of such claims. Humphrey, Farrington & McClain, the law firm that represented Wright students in a case against the school, is preparing material for an additional 182 students’ borrower defense claims, including Brian’s. Based on data from the Department of Education and published by TCF, former Wright students like Brian filed forty-four fraud-based claims for debt relief as of August 15, 2017, making it the nonprofit school that has garnered the highest number of such claims. When Wright closed in spring 2016, it left staff members suddenly unemployed and it stranded students in the midst of finals, unsure whether they would be able to transfer their credits to another institution, and uncertain whether they would be able to continue their educations. Before closing, Wright appeared on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of colleges under scrutiny for financial reasons, but the department’s heightened monitoring of Wright’s cash flow did not protect unsuspecting students.19 Neither did Wright’s accreditor, ACICS, which subsequently lost recognition as a gatekeeper of federal funds in August 201620 after the Department of Education found that it consistently failed to protect students and taxpayers from problem schools.21 Now, as former Wright students seek relief in numbers that are unsurpassed among other nonprofit institutions, regulators should maintain a watchful eye on other known bad actors seeking to cloak themselves with nonprofit status.

  10. Jeep hasn't sold a pickup truck since 1992, when the XJ Cherokee-based Comanche went out of production, though Jeep has made many concept pickup trucks to tease us. Now, we know that a Wrangler pickup is on its way, and it's high on our list of cars we can't wait to drive. To say we're excited for the Wrangler pickup would be an understatement, so let's round up everything we think we know about it. It's Actually, Finally, Really, Seriously Happening Jeep started the Wrangler pickup fever in 2005 with the Gladiator Concept (shown above), but it never reached production. A handful of concepts since only served to whet our collective appetite further. Finally, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed in early 2016 that Jeep would finally offer a production pickup version of the next-generation Wrangler. It's Hitting Production in Late 2019 In a 2016 interview with The Detroit News at the Detroit Auto Show, Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that the Wrangler pickup would arrive in late 2017, following the debut of the next-generation JL Wrangler. Unfortunately, Jeep has since delayed pickup production until late 2019, nearly two years after the next-generation Wrangler is set to arrive. Manley says that he wants to make sure there are no issues with Wrangler SUV production before Jeep starts building the pickup. Both Wrangler models will be built at Jeep's Toledo, Ohio plant, which is undergoing a $700 million upgrade to prepare for the new vehicles. We should see the Wrangler debut in SUV form later in 2017, but Jeep hasn't announced when the pickup will make its debut. It'll Look Like This (Probably) Since the Wrangler pickup was announced, we've received spy photos and detailed renderings giving us a pretty clear picture of what to expect. Unsurprisingly, it looks like a Wrangler with a truck bed. The next-generation Wrangler gets a new front face with more prominently angled grille slats, and headlights with LED running lamps. We’ve only seen spy shots of four-door Wrangler Unlimited pickup prototypes, but according to the latest renderings, the truck will likely be available as a two-door as well. It's Been Rumored for Production for a While Now We first heard rumblings of a pickup based on the next-generation Wrangler in September of 2015. Of course, people have been clamoring for it for a much longer time. It'll Be Based on the New Wrangler Platform Jeep will continue building the current-generation Wrangler until March 2018, meaning old and new generations will be sold side-by-side for several months. Jeep hasn't revealed too many specifics on the next Wrangler, but we have a decent idea of what it'll be like. The JL Wrangler is supposed to retain its classic body-on-frame construction, but it might get a new aluminum-intensive body. Like Ford with the current F-150, switching to lightweight aluminum construction could help fuel economy, never a strong suit with the Wrangler. Diesel and hybrid Wranglers are also rumored, but yet to be confirmed. We do know the Wrangler is set to get a serious interior upgrade, complete with FCA's latest UConnect infotainment system. Thankfully, a manual transmission will remain on the options list, and the Wrangler is likely to retain its iconic removable doors. Like the current Wrangler, the next-gen Wrangler pickup will be built in Toledo, Ohio alongside the non-pickup truck version. It Probably Won't Have a Hellcat Engine Yes, Jeep made a Wrangler with the 707-hp supercharged V8 from the Hellcat last year, but it's just a one-off fever dream. Don't fret though, because if you want a Hellcat motor and a seven-slat grille, there's always the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It Might Get a 300-HP Turbo Four-Cylinder, Though In an effort to improve fuel economy in the notoriously inefficient Wrangler, Jeep is said to be developing a new 300-horsepower turbocharged inline-four cylinder codenamed "Hurricane," perhaps as an optional upgrade over the 3.6-liter, 285-hp Pentastar V6 used in the current Wrangler. Spy photos obtained by The Truth About Cars appear to show a four-cylinder under the hood of a Wrangler prototype. And It'll Likely Have a Diesel According to screenshots of Jeep's dealer system on the Jeep Scrambler Forums, the JT Wrangler Pickup will have a 3.0 turbo diesel V6 with auto start/stop as an engine choice. No word on the transmissions it could/would be linked to. It'll Sell Like Crazy Americans love pickup trucks, and Americans love Jeeps. Sergio Marchionne knows this, so building a Wrangler pickup is a complete and total no brainer. It'll also be wildly different from every other pickup currently on sale, which should help it further. The Roof Will Be Removable Along with shots confirming the diesel engine, the Scrambler Forums have shotsshowing that the roof will be removable, just like a regular Wrangler. There should be at least three roof configurations available. We Have a Name The thought has been that this truck would be called the Wrangler pickup or some variation on that name. Now, the rumor is that Jeep will be reviving a name that last appeared on a Jeep CJ-8 (and a Ducati motorcycle): Scrambler. This is still a rumor, but we're hoping that's the case.

  12. Just in time for Black Friday, Cars.com has revealed some of the top car deals shoppers can expect to find at their local dealerships. With a trifecta of year end, month end and Black Friday, many manufacturers are offering extra-special deals and incentives during this year’s day-after-Thanksgiving shopping extravaganza. With new car sales still struggling after a 1.4 percent year-over-year decline in October, automakers are using Black Friday as an additional way to entice shoppers. According to a new Cars.com study, 18 percent of car shoppers said they’re more inclined to visit a dealership on Black Friday. 74 percent of those shoppers said they’re more inclined to visit a dealership on Black Friday specifically as a result of special deals and promotions. (The November, 2017, Car Gifting Survey from Cars.com consisted of 5,500 consumer panelists and 620 survey respondents.) 2017 Kia Sorento models can be purchased with a $3,000 to $4,000 discount, and 2018s are being offered with a $1,500 to $2,000 discount. (Kia) “We’re seeing solid incentives from a number of different manufacturers,” said Jennifer Newman, Cars.com editor-in-chief. “If you are already in the market for a new car, you might want to consider hitting your local dealership lots this Black Friday instead of waiting in long lines at your nearest big-box store. From the data we’ve seen, the reward is there for certain vehicles.” Some of the most notable incentives according to Cars.com experts are: Ford Fusion: Shoppers can expect to save between $2,150 and $5,000 on certain 2017 trims. If they choose to finance directly through Ford, additional discounts may be available. Hyundai Elantra: A discount of $3,000 can be found on 2018 Elantra sedans and $1,000 off on the hatchback model, the Elantra GT. Hyundai is also offering additional discounts if shoppers choose Hyundai financing options. Kia Optima: Kia is offering shoppers $1,500 off the 2018 Optima and $3,000 off the 2017 model. Like Ford and Hyundai, if shoppers choose to finance through Kia, additional discounts may be available. Kia Sorento: 2017 Sorento models can be purchased with a $3,000 to $4,000 discount, and 2018s are being offered with a $1,500 to $2,000 discount. Like all the deals listed, additional discounts may be available if shoppers choose to finance directly through Kia Hyundai is also offering additional discounts on the 2018 Elantra (shown) and Elantra GT if shoppers choose Hyundai financing options. (Hyundai) With deals aplenty, shoppers have good reason to go car shopping, said Newman. “However, our research indicated that regardless of deals and incentives, 16 percent of shoppers are more inclined to visit a dealership this Black Friday because they have more available free time, and 8 percent said they’d shop over Black Friday simply because ‘it's fun.’ ”
  13. Zimbabwe's long-time president Robert Mugabe has been holding direct talks with the army over his future. Pictures emerged of the 93-year-old meeting the army chief and two envoys from South Africa at his official residence in Harare. The army put Mr Mugabe under house arrest on Wednesday after moving in to take control. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai says Mr Mugabe must resign but sources suggest the president is resistant. Why did the military take this action? President Mugabe has been in control of Zimbabwe since it threw off white minority rule in 1980. However, the power struggle over who might succeed him, between his wife Grace Mugabe and her rival former Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has split the ruling Zanu-PF party in recent months. Last week, Mr Mugabe came down in favour of his wife, sacking Mr Mnangagwa, a veteran of Zimbabwe's anti-colonial struggle. That proved too much for military leaders, who seized control of the country on Wednesday. The story in full Live page: Click here for latest developments The basics: Five things you should know about Zimbabwe The Mugabes and other key players in profile What do South Africa and the region want? South Africa is hosting millions of Zimbabweans who fled after the country's economy crashed in 2008. It has a special interest in seeing stability restored. South African Defence Minister Nosiviwe Maphisa-Nqakula and State Security Minister Bongani Bongo are the envoys meeting Mr Mugabe on behalf of Sadc, which South Africa currently leads. Zimbabwe's long-time president Robert Mugabe has been holding direct talks with the army over his future. The army put Mr Mugabe under house arrest on Wednesday after moving in to take control. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai says Mr Mugabe must resign but sources suggest the president is resistant. So what's going on in Harare now? It's very unclear. Photos in the Zimbabwe Herald showed Mr Mugabe meeting army chief Gen Constantino Chiwenga and the two South African envoys from the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) at State House in Harare. Alongside them was Father Fidelis Mukonori, a Roman Catholic priest known to Mr Mugabe for years who has been brought in to mediate. Sources close to the talks say Mr Mugabe is refusing to stand down voluntarily before next year's planned elections. "He is refusing to step down. I think he is trying to buy time," one source close to the army leadership told the AFP news agency. Zanu-PF officials had earlier suggested Mr Mugabe could remain nominally in power until the party congress in December, when Mr Mnangagwa would be formally installed as party and national leader. What do South Africa and the region want? South Africa is hosting millions of Zimbabweans who fled after the country's economy crashed in 2008. It has a special interest in seeing stability restored. South African Defence Minister Nosiviwe Maphisa-Nqakula and State Security Minister Bongani Bongo are the envoys meeting Mr Mugabe on behalf of Sadc, which South Africa currently leads. Mr Chipanga is thought to be in army custody but insisted his statement was voluntary. Local media reports say a number of other senior members of the "Generation-40" group have also been detained. What are Zimbabweans being told? Zimbabwe's media usually toe the government line and today's lead stories make it clear there is a new line to follow. There is a striking absence of tough questions about what the army is doing. "Business as usual countrywide," says The Herald, a government-owned newspaper. Yesterday it reassured readers there was "No military takeover". State TV and radio stations have returned to regular programming, with Thursday's lunchtime news bulletin on state TV giving little indication of the political upheaval. Some privately owned newspapers have dared to address the possible end of Robert Mugabe's rule. "Transitional govt planned … as Mugabe cornered," the Financial Gazette reports. "Zimbabwe scents the end of an era," it added. "It could easily have been entitled The end of an error. A 37-year-old error," says a similarly headlined commentary in NewsDay. Was this a poor uprising? Not so far, no. There have been no reports of unrest in Zimbabwe, and so far this appears to be a struggle within Zanu-PF. Correspondents say many people have accepted that President Mugabe is being eased from office. Streets in Harare are said to be quieter than usual but people are going about their business. On Wednesday, troops and armoured vehicles encircled parliament and other key buildings. Hours earlier, soldiers took over the headquarters of national broadcaster ZBC and issued a statement saying that the military was targeting "criminals" around President Mugabe.

  15. Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that two children were among the four dead. Two children were wounded, but are being treated for their injuries. The mother of the gunman who killed at least four people and wounded at 14 others, including two children, in Northern California on Tuesday shared some information that could explain her son's state of mind before the shooting spree. In a phone interview with the Associated Press, the woman, who identified herself only as Annie, revealed that her son had been feeling frustrated by an ongoing feud with his neighbors. She said her son sounded desperate over his relationship with his neighbors, who he said were cooking meth and creating fumes that were harming his nine dogs. "I'm on a cliff and there's nowhere to go," he reportedly told his mother about the situation. The first two people killed were the shooter’s neighbors. A day before opening fire Tuesday at multiple “random” locations near Rancho Tehama Elementary School, the shooter called his mother and said "it's all over now," the AP reported. The school is located in Rancho Tehama Reserve, an unincorporated area in Tehama County, about 100 miles north of Sacramento. Annie also said she posted the $160,000 bail for her son in January after he was charged with stabbing one of the neighbors. She said that her son was charged with the assault and that he told her he had grabbed a steak knife out of the hand of the neighbor, who was threatening him with it. The neighbor was slightly injured, the mother said. Although police have declined to identify the shooter, they confirmed it was the same man who was charged in the January assault. The district attorney, Gregg Cohen, told the Sacramento Bee he is prosecuting a man named Kevin Neal in that case. Annie told the AP she was unaware of her son being involved in Tuesday's shooting until an AP reporter contacted her. Police were also called to the shooter’s home a day before the shootings on a domestic violence call but no other details on the matter were available. The shooter tried to access rooms at an elementary school early Tuesday to shoot more kids as part of a "bizarre and murderous rampage," police said at a news conference Tuesday night. The shooter was killed by police after he opened fire. Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said that one of the victims was the woman who had been stabbed in the January attack. School officials heard shots being fired about a quarter-mile away and the school went into lockdown mode, Johnston said. He added the incident "could have been much worse if it wasn't for the quick thinking" of the school's staff, who put the school in immediate lockdown mode without instruction from police. Johnston noted it was "monumental" that school workers took action when they did, because he believes they saved the lives of countless children. The assistant sheriff said the gunman rammed his vehicle into a school fence, then walked onto school grounds with a semi-automatic rifle while wearing a protective vest. After being unable to access classrooms due to the lockdown, it's believed the gunman became "frustrated" and went back to his car, and began shooting at people while driving, according to police. "This guy was bent on driving by residences and arbitrarily shooting at them," Johnston said of the gunman. "This guy was on a killing rampage, he was driving up and down the street shooting at passerbys [sic], and uninvolved residences." A mother, who said she didn't know the gunman but was just driving past him with her three children, was shot. One of the children suffered a non-life-threatening injury, according to police. However, it was unclear if she was the victim of a gunshot wound or hit with shrapnel from a bullet-riddled car door. “This is an individual that armed himself, I think, with the motive of getting even with his neighbors, and when it went that far, he just went on a rampage," Johnston added of the shooter, noting that authorities didn't suspect any connection to terrorism. Investigators recovered a semi-automatic riflle, in addition to two handguns. Johnston said there was another weapon in the suspect's crashed vehicle that authorities had not yet recovered. The officer noted there was a restraining order against the shooter, which he said would've limited his ability to possess firearms for a period of time, depending on the reason for the order. More than 100 police officers were investigating seven different shooting scenes in the area. Brian Flint told the Record Searchlight newspaper after the shooting that his neighbor was the gunman. "The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines," Flint said. "We made it aware that this guy is crazy and he's been threatening us." He added the suspect stole his truck. Witnesses at the school described multiple rounds being fired. Coy Ferreira told KRCR he was dropping off his daughter at the school just before 8 a.m. when he heard a firecracker-like sound. The school’s secretary then ran out and told children to go inside because there was an active shooter. Ferreira said he ended up in a classroom with 14 students and witnessed a boy being struck by bullets. The Tehama County Sheriff's Office has asked the Department of Justice to investigate the shooting, Johnston told KRCR. He added the FBI volunteered to investigate, as well. California Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement that he and his wife were "saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief." Vice President Mike Pence tweeted his condolences for the lives lost in the shooting, and said "We commend the effort of courageous law enforcement. We'll continue to monitor the situation & provide federal support, as we pray for comfort & healing for all impacted."

  18. Infiniti has taken the wraps off a mildly refreshed 2018 QX80, giving the flagship SUV a few updates inside and out. The biggest visual changes are the (slightly) revised front and rear fascias: The headlights are now narrower and sit higher on the front fenders, the lower front fascia sports slimmer horizontal running lights, and the grille is now wider at the bottom rather than at the top compared to the outgoing model. Out back, the taillights are different in design if not in overall shape, and they're now joined by a single horizontal chrome strip that runs along the top of the rear license plate niche. Overall, it's an evolutionary look that tweaks the established design of the QX80 in the spirit of the QX80 Monograph concept that debuted at the New York auto show earlier this year, instead of a complete redesign. The changes are even milder on the inside: The design of the steering wheel and the leather-wrapped gear shift has been tweaked, and Infiniti has added choices of Wheat or Graphite upholstery. When it comes to tech, the refreshed QX80 now features larger rear infotainment screens -- a bump from 7.0 to 8.0 inches -- as well as HDMI ports in addition to the standard USB ports. Up front, Infiniti has made a few changes to storage space, including a larger smartphone storage area and cupholders for cups with handles. The storage area under the center armrest has also been expanded, now measuring 5.4 liters in volum Underhood, the QX80 still packs a beefy 5.6-liter V8 with 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque on tap, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. In sum, most of the changes are on the outside and they serve to tone down the brash, bulbous style of Infiniti's largest offering, which has been on sale since 2010 (first as the QX56). The SUV is now closer to a complete redesign than to its initial launch, as it battles much newer galleons including the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. But that redesign won't be here for at least a couple of years. The change in price for 2018 is similarly incremental; the QX80 is now $900 dearer for two- and four-wheel-drive models alike, weighing in at $65,745 and $68,845, respectively. "The Infiniti QX80 has been a po[CENSORED]r choice for buyers in the luxury SUV segment, particularly in North America and the Middle East," said Christian Meunier, Infiniti Global Division Vice President. "The new QX80 will boost Infiniti's presence in the full-size SUV segment by evoking the spirit of inclusive luxury travel. Customers expect maximum comfort, practicality and style – and the 2018 QX80 delivers."

  20. If there’s any generation that doesn’t like to talk about aging, it’s the baby boomers. It’s understandable. They’ve made it through the swingin’ ’60s, wild ’70s, outrageous ’80s, and go-go ’90s. Along the way, 40 became the new 30, 50 became the new 40, and so on. This generation is still vibrant and full of life, and the last thing boomers want to be called is old. But many boomers are now well into retirement age, and that usually means some big life changes — including new cars. Don’t expect this bunch to shuffle down to Florida and buy Cadillacs like their parents. This is the generation that reaped the benefits of the muscle car era and later made Japanese and European brands commonplace on American roads. Thankfully, the best cars for retirees no longer scream “blue-plate special.” They’re simply some of the safest and most reliable models on the roads. We came up with a list of the 10 best cars for baby boomers to buy. Don’t worry: None of them will make you look a day over 40. We promise. 1. Subaru Forester Subaru Forester XT | Micah Wright/The Cheat Sheet For aging drivers who deal with snow at least a few months out of the year, the all-wheel drive Subaru Forester is a perfect crossover. Its low ride height makes for easy entry and exit. And great visibility paired with a standard reverse camera makes being aware of your surroundings that much easier. On top of the $22,595 base price, Subaru’s StarLink package adds blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic braking. It makes this already safe crossover even safer. Next: This luxury car is criminally underrated.

From left: Michael Brown, Jack Greening, Eric Pol, Owen Carso, Dr. Botzman, Jillian Robinson, Rozlyn Jones, Alina Kanet (Photo by Peg Snure) MILFORD — We started our day arriving at Misericordia University and meeting Mr. Brian Carso, who gave us a tour of Misericordia. We went and interviewed the President, Dr. Thomas Botzman. Dr. Botzman started out going to Yale for engineering. He then taught in Europe and Mexico. He has been the President of the University for five years now. He is the 13 president of the university. He told us that Misericordia is almost 100 years old. When asked about any news building plans for the school, he told us that $38 million will be spent on the science building. The university is known for its music and arts programs. The best part of his job is seeing the students realizing their dreams. The hardest part of being president is when students or their family gets injured, or passes away. He goes to 5 to 10 meetings a day. He tries to fit in lunch when he can with the students. When asked if they have had any students 16 or younger, Dr. Botzman said yes, there have been 15- to A 16-year-old students that have attended. They’ve had a professional soccer player and many students who have become famous locally who have attended Misericordia. He also mentioned that there are approximately 3,000 students, including commuter students. We asked Dr. Botzman what he liked to do outside of the university and he touts himself a good video player! He also said that their dining hall is very good. We thanked him for the interview and continued with our tour with Brian Carso. A peek backstageNext we went ate in the dining hall and had a great lunch. We then went to see the school’s TV studio, where we met Dr. Melissa Sgroi and Dan Kimbrough. Dr. Melissa Sgroi was an anchorwoman and reporter for a CBS affiliate. Mr. Kimbrough showed us the studio and their green screen. We checked out the TV studio/communications lab. We then met Mr. Jeff Kelly, theater director, who explained stage lighting and the light control room. He brought us back stage and showed us the green room where people have make-up put on and wait until called to stage. Misericordia University had a Rodin Art Exhibit, where we met Alexandra Isaac, who told us more about Rodin. We also met up with previous DVE-News/TV reporter Michael Bell. Last up was Dr. Serine, Science Professor, who showed us many different mammal skulls, like a giraffe alligator, crocodile, and cougar. He had preserved timber rattlers and copperheads. He even showed us tapeworms! We really enjoyed our trip and learned a lot about Misericordia University. By DVE-News/TV reporters Owen Carso, Jillian Robinson, Alina Kanet, Michael Brown, Jack Greening, Eric Pol and Rozlin Jones.
