A North Korean delegation has arrived in South Korea for a landmark visit to inspect cultural venues for next month's Winter Olympics. It is headed by Hyon Song-wol, leader of the po[CENSORED]r Moranbong girl band and a big celebrity in the secretive state. North Korea agreed to send a delegation to the games after the first high-level bilateral talks in two years. The decision is seen as a diplomatic breakthrough after months of tension over its nuclear weapons programme. North v South: A history of sport, bombs and diplomacy Reality Check: How good is North Korea at sport? Local media showed the North Korean delegation crossing the heavily-fortified border on a bus before arriving in the South Korean capital, Seoul. Surrounded by hundreds of police officers, they then boarded a train to the eastern city of Gangneung. But it was on Hyon Song-wol that South Korea's cameras were focused. She and her 10-member Moranbong band are the glamorous face of North Korea - and have been described as Pyongyang's answer to the Spice Girls. Often seen wearing miniskirts and high heels, they perform a mixture of Western-style pop and patriotic songs - in a style seen as quaintly provincial by South Koreans, AFP news agency reports. Ms Hyon was once rumoured to have been a former girlfriend of the leader Kim Jong-un, although this has been dismissed by North Korea watchers. She will lead the 140-member Samjiyon art troupe, which is due to give two performances - one in Seoul and another in Gangneung - during the Olympics. North Korea's cheerleading charm offensive The coach who helped North Korea's skaters qualify for the Olympics The delegation's two-day visit is expected to be the first of several to prepare for Pyongyang's participation in the games. It is the first visit by Pyongyang officials to the South for four years, reports say. The delegation includes athletes, officials and cheerleaders. Another team will visit the South this week to check logistics for North Korean athletes, while Seoul will send its own officials to the North's ski resort to inspect the venue

Amazon has released a shortlist of the 20 North American urban areas to be chosen to become the retailer's second North American headquarters. The proposed site is expected to cost more than $5bn (£3.6bn) and create 50,000 jobs. Cities across the US have placed bids for the contract. "Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough," the Seattle-based online shopping giant said in a statement. Toronto was the only non-US city to make it to the list. The others are Atlanta, Georgia; Austin, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Indianapolis, Indiana; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; Montgomery County, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; Newark, New Jersey; New York City; Northern Virginia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Washington DC.A tale of 238 cities. Analysis by Natalie Sherman, BBC Business Amazon's announcement last fall that it would put roots down in a second city kicked off an unprecedented amount of jockeying among cities hoping for the nod. The retail giant received more than 230 responses, including bids from places like Detroit, Michigan, Baltimore, Maryland and Camden, New Jersey, whose leaders hoped the promised 50,000 jobs and $5bn would remake their down-on-the-heels metropolises. The shortlist revealed Thursday largely crushed that notion. Not so short, the 20 names read like a rundown of many of America's most successful, wealthiest areas: New York City, Boston and a cluster of three around Washington DC, among them. Even some of the more unexpected, smaller places, such as Nashville, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have gained reputations in the last decade as tech hubs. Amazon was upfront about its preference for a big city, with a deep pool of potential workers, viable public transit and an international airport. But that didn't necessarily take the sting out of the reminder that the gap between the regions of America that are thriving and those that are struggling is growing. Amazon announced in September that they need a second headquarters, after they outgrew their Seattle hometown where the company was founded in 1994 and now employs more than 40,000 people. In a press release, the tech giant said it had reviewed more than 200 proposals from across North America for its second headquarters. A wave of local officials have wooed the company with tax incentives and other benefits. Cities and counties engaged in publicity students to attract the company's interest. A development group in Calgary, Alberta, took out an advert in Seattle offering to fight a bear for Amazon. Chicago offered tax credits which would allow Amazon to keep over $1.3bn in income taxes that employees would normally pay to the state. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez applauded the shortlist, writing on Twitter that "#Miami's business-friendly environment and our highly-skilled, multilingual workers are ready for #AmazonHQ2." Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser called the decision proof that "Washington DC is no longer a one-company government town". Residents of other cities that failed to make the shortlist voiced their disappointment. In a statement, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said "we would love" to have been included on the shortlist, but that their proposal will continue to serve as "a clear vision for the future". "I expect the lessons we learned in the Amazon process will help make us more successful on a number of other major potential investments that we are currently pursuing." Others criticised the company's list of demands, which include a business-friendly tax environment. Stacy Mitchell, from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a group that advocates for local businesses, slammed the mega-corporation in a statement to the New York Times. "As these cities woo and grovel, they are basically communicating this idea that we should want Amazon to be bigger and more powerful in our economy," Ms Mitchell said of Thursday's announcement. The company had previously said it would only consider metropolitan areas with one million residents or more. Founded and led by Jeff Bezos - considered to be the richest man in the world - Amazon is a dominant online retailer. The company sent shockwaves through the grocery industry this summer after striking a deal to buy Whole Foods. Mr Bezos also independently owns the Washington Post. A final decision is expected to come later this year.

Animal rights group Peta has launched an international campaign to try to end the mistreatment of working animals in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. Peta says donkeys, horses and camels are beaten and forced to carry visitors in extreme heat without shade or water. Jordanian and international groups say they are already working with the animals' owners to improve conditions. They fear warning off tourists could prove counter-productive by depriving the animals' owners of income. Petra is one of the wonders of the world. Carved out of rock, the sudden entrance into the ancient Nabatean city through a narrow passage is breathtaking. It is the crown jewel of the Jordanian tourist industry. But there has long been concern about the treatment of the more than 1,300 working animals there. Donkeys haul tourists up 900 steep and eroded steps to the Monastery, a monument miraculously built out of rock on the mountainside. Horses, mules and camels carry tourists to the city and through it - some pulling carriages and carts - enduring beatings and lack of food and water as they do so. Jordanian organisations and their international partners have tried to improve their conditions at the Unesco World Heritage site. But Peta says nowhere near enough has been done. Last year, it amassed video and photographic evidence of cruelty to animals there, which showed deep wounds on many of the animals from chains and ropes tied around them. And now it is calling on the Jordanian authorities to take decisive action. It says the animals should be replaced by mechanised transport for tourists. It is also urging tour operators and hotels to shun the site until the abuses are stopped. But Unesco itself told the BBC that motorised vehicles would not be desirable there. The Princess Alia Foundation in Jordan and the international animal charity, Four Paws, said they were happy to work with any group to improve animal welfare But they said they had already done much to improve the conditions for horses at Petra by providing new stables and ensuring their owners have sufficient food, water and shelter - as well as lighter carriages and more animal-friendly harnesses and saddles. They acknowledge there is more to do. But there is a concern in Jordan that a campaign warning off tourists from Petra could be counterproductive by damaging a major income source, as well as depriving the Bedouin community that has long owned the working animals of their livelihood, which could have an even more negative impact on their welfare. Peta though claims that only lip service has been paid to improving the lot of the animals. For example, it says it found that a sign at Petra asking tourists to report mistreatment leads to an email address that does not reply and a website that does not work.

The US firm said it was teaming up with London-based Wenn Media Group to carry out the initial coin offering (ICO). It is part of a blockchain-based initiative to help photographers control their image rights. Kodak also detailed plans to install rows of Bitcoin mining rigs at its headquarters in Rochester, New York. Details of this second scheme - which is being branded the Kodak KashMiner - were outlined at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. Customers will pay up-front to rent mining capacity. Kodak is the latest in a series of companies to see its value jump after revealing plans for blockchain-related activity. "This is a phenomenon we saw back during the dot com days in the late 1990s where traditional companies would mention some kind of internet strategy and their stock price would jump up," commented Garrick Hileman from the University of Cambridge. "When you see stock prices moving like this it does appear to be troubling - it's hard to say if there's a bubble but it certainly is indicative of a frothy investment market." Coin creation Kodak was famously slow to join the digital revolution, and its hesitation to leave behind its film heritage cost the company its market. Since its collapse in 2012, Kodak has licensed its brand to a variety of manufacturers, with the mark appearing on batteries, printers, drones, tablet computers and digital cameras. The KashMiner operation will be run by Spotlite, a licensee that had previously teamed up with Kodak to use its brand to market LED lights. More from CES: Samsung launches giant modular TV Disobedient robot derails LG's event Hands-on with HTC's untethered VR headset Short story dispenser spits out tales Mining involves carrying out processor-intensive tasks to solve complicated mathematical problems in order to verify crypto-currency transactions. Any Bitcoins generated by Kodak KashMiner will be shared between the customer and the business. Each of the mining rig boxes - which include computer processors and fans to keep them cool - will use about the same amount of electricity as running a hairdryer around the clock. But the scheme will be able to take advantage of Kodak's on-site power generating plant, which has had spare capacity since Kodak's heyday. The company says it can power each rig for four cents per kilowatt hour, which is significantly cheaper than running a rig at home. At Bitcoin's current value, an up-front investment of $4,000 (£2,954) for 24 months of mining could earn a profit of $500 a month, Spotlite's Halston Mikail told the BBC. But anybody hoping to join the gamble would have to wait, as capacity is already sold out, Mr Mikail added. "At this time we have 80 miners, and we expect another 300 to arrive shortly. There is a big pile-up of demand," he said. Bitcoin is notoriously volatile and some analysts fear its value could crash, resulting in a loss for those who had paid up-front for mining capacity. But Mr Mikail said the rigs could be put to work on other tasks if Bitcoin faltered. "Bitcoin could be a bubble. But the blockchain industry is not a bubble," he said. "It's a solid platform built on mathematics and it will survive." Kodak currency Kodak's other initiative, the KodakCoin, is being created as part of an effort to build a global ledger of picture rights ownership that photographers can add their work to. Associated KodakOne software will be used to crawl the web and find pictures that have been used without permission. The company said it would then "manage the licensing process," so the photographer can be paid, in KodakCoin. "Kodak has always sought to democratise photography and make licensing fair to artists," said Kodak chief executive Jeff Clarke. "These technologies give the photography community an innovative and easy way to do just that." The company's shares traded more than 130% above their opening price after the announcement before closing the day 119.4% higher. But one expert had doubts. "Storing the information in a blockchain doesn't protect your copyright any more than copyright law already does," commented David Gerard, author of Attack of the 50ft Blockchain. "Notice how they're marketing it: they state a problem, then say the blockchain can solve it. But there's no mechanism by which the blockchain could do that. "This doesn't do anything that signing up for Shutterstock or Getty Images wouldn't." Even so, some think Kodak will not be the last household name to associate itself with an ICO. "I expect we are going to see more major brands releasing their own tokens and currencies to support various products and services," commented Mr Hileman. "It's something many big companies are thinking very hard about."

The Byton electric SUV is drawing a lot of eyes at CES 2018, but you wouldn't guess that from looking at its exterior, as the ginormous screen on its dashboard is the true star of this automobile. Announced today (Jan. 8), the Byton is less about autonomous driving (though it promises some self-driving capabilities) than it is about the car as a smart device. The Byton will cost $45,000 and up and will be coming to the U.S. and Europe in 2020. But, seriously, just check out that dashboard for a second. It's a 49 x 9.8-inch console that Byton is dubbing the Shared Experience Display, which will be supported by a trio of additional displays, one of which is in the steering wheel. This is the kind of amazing interface that makes you think the car belongs in the distant future more than during the next presidential election campaign. On the outside of the Byton, the SUV's cameras will use facial recognition to unlock the doors. Once the car recognizes you, it will automatically adjust your seat to your preferences. That's just the tip of the jaw-dropping details, as this car will feature something Byton calls an "invisible door handle," which we cannot wait to see for ourselves. At CES, Byton will demonstrate the SUV's Health, Communication, Entertainment and Activities modes, showing off how this car is as much a giant smartphone with four wheels as it is the future of automobiles. It will track user activity by connecting to users' smart devices to monitor health statistics such as weight, heart rate and blood pressure, as well as give fitness advice. The Byton has many touch screens, but it will also let users perform operations via voice commands, and feature biometric identification and gesture-based controls. This car will also feature Alexa integration, as well as integrated audio and video content from Amazon. Just don't expect the Byton to be a fully self-driving car. In a press release, Byton says its 2019 production units (which will debut in China before they arrive in the U.S. and Europe) will feature Level 3-caliber Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAC) technology, placing it in the middle of the ADAC spectrum and meaning that the driver has to be ready to take control in case of an emergency. Level 4 capability, which is referred to by some as providing fully autonomous driving, and means the driver can safely take a nap, or even move to the back seat, will arrive in a software update in 2020. Inside, the Byton is the definition of luxury, with a wooden floor, leather seats, and front seats that rotate 12 degrees inwards for a more intimate shared space between passengers. Its individually-adjustable rear seats make it so even the loudest backseat driver gets a comfy experience. The Byton reportedly features a maximum range of 323 miles on a single charge, and measure 15.9 feet long, with a wheelbase of 9.6 feet and a wheel size of 22 inches. An antenna integrated into the roof is designed for a 5G future, with data transfer rates of up to 10 gigabytes per second. Byton announced its ambitions for two other cars: a sedan and multi-purpose vehicle, to be built on the same platform that the SUV uses.

Powerful speeches about Hollywood's sexual abuse scandal have dominated the 75th Golden Globe Awards. It was the first major Hollywood awards ceremony since the film industry was hit by sexual harassment scandals, with stars wearing black to honour victims. Oprah Winfrey summed up the mood, saying "a new day is on the horizon" as she collected an honorary award. The big film winner of the night was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which took home four awards. In pictures: Stars wear black on red carpet Eight highlights from the Golden Globes Oprah's speech in full It won the best film drama award, with its star Frances McDormand also picking up a trophy for best actress. The Oscar-winning actress stars as a grieving mother who challenges police over the fact her daughter's killer has not been found. Big Little Lies won the most awards in the television categories, including honours for its stars Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard. It was also named best limited TV series. 'Power of women' Kidman won the first award of the night for her role as a victim of domestic violence. She dedicated her win to her castmates, daughters and mother, saying: "Wow, the power of women." The Golden Globes are organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are seen as an indicator of which films are likely to do well at the Oscars, which take place on 4 March. The ceremony and red carpet as it happened Golden Globes 2018: Full list of winners Funniest moments of the Globes The main focus on the night was on the current atmosphere in Hollywood and campaigns like Me Too and Time's Up, which are focused on bringing about change for women not only in the entertainment industry but also around the world. Many winners and presenters at the Beverly Hills ceremony addressed the ongoing scandal - with host Seth Meyers setting the tone with his opening monologue. "Welcome ladies and remaining gentlemen," he told the gathered stars of film and TV, before saying: "It's 2018 and marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn't. "For the male nominees in the room tonight, this is the first time in three months it won't be terrifying to hear your name read out loud." Meyers also jokingly encouraged Oprah Winfrey to run for president against Donald Trump. He referred to the 2011 White House Correspondents Association dinner when he and Barack Obama mocked the idea of Trump becoming US president. "Some have said that night convinced him to run," he continued. "So, if that's true, I just want to say, Oprah, you will never be president. You do not have what it takes." It was Oprah whose speech had the biggest reaction, with stars applauding and rising to their feet. Speaking as she was awarded the honorary Cecil B DeMille trophy - the first black woman to get the honour - she said: "Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up!" The theme was echoed by Laura Dern, winner of a best supporting actress for Big Little Lies, who said: "Many of us were taught not to tattle. "It was a culture of silencing, and that was normalised... May we teach our children that speaking out without the fear of retribution is our culture's new North Star." Barbra Streisand used her presenting slot to express outrage that she remains the only woman to win the best director award at the ceremony - and that was back in 1984. "Folks, time's up," she said. "We need more women directors and more women to be nominated for best director." Greta Gerwig, whose directorial debut Lady Bird was named best musical or comedy film, could be seen being hugged by her film's star, Saoirse Ronan, as Streisand made her comments. Gerwig was not nominated in the directing category - an award won by The Shape of Water's Guillermo del Toro - but neither was any woman. It was a fact that did not escape Natalie Portman's notice as she presented the best director award, pointedly referring to the "all male nominees". While many Britons had been nominated for honours, only three won. Gary Oldman was named best actor for portraying Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour - a feat he revealed took 63 applications of make-up. Ewan McGregor won the award for best actor in a television series for Fargo Martin McDonagh picked up the best screenplay trophy for Three Billboards. Irish actress Ronan was named best actress in a film comedy for Lady Bird, while James Franco won the equivalent award for best actor for The Disaster Artist. 'Writing the story ourselves' In the TV categories, The Handmaid's Tale and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel did well, with two awards each. Elisabeth Moss, named best actress in a TV drama for The Handmaid's Tale, dedicated her win to author Margaret Atwood, whose book is the source material for the series. After reading a quote from Atwood, she told the audience: "We no longer live in the gaps... we are the story in print and we are writing the story ourselves." They were apt words for a night when Hollywood seemed determined to turn a new page. At the same time, the ceremony did allow itself a few nostalgic nods back to its glittering past. Kirk Douglas was given a rapturous reception, at the age of 101, as he came on stage to present an award with daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta-Jones. And there was an on-stage reunion for Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, 27 years on from their on-screen partnership in Thelma and Louise. Even here, though, pointed commentary was no more than a breath away. Announcing the nominees for best actor in a drama, Davis joked they had all "agreed to give half of their salary back, so the women can make more than them".
