  1. Tougher encryption is coming to help protect your Google Meet calls data Keeping your Google Workspace data safe is set to get a little easier after the platform announced one of its most-used tools is getting a significant security boost. Google Meet will now get client-side encryption, giving an extra layer of security to safeguard your video calls and the content shared within. The change should mean that users of the video conferencing service will get "direct control" of their data, and the encryption keys used to keep this safe - with not even Google itself getting access. Google Meet encryption Google says that Meet already encrypts all user data while at rest and whilst in transit between its facilities, with client-side encryption going a step beyond in letting users have direct control of their encryption keys and the identity service that they choose to authenticate for those keys. The tool could potentially be useful for those calls that need an extra level of confidentiality, the company says, such as discussions regarding sensitive intellectual property or taking place in highly regulated industries where compliance is key. Describing the update as "another significant milestone", Google says that the move will also offer users "the highest degree of protection and control over their data". It adds that activating the change will also mean that even Google itself won't be able to access audio and video content, "under any circumstances", and also help meet regulatory compliance in many regions. Client-side encrypted calls will also only begin when the organizer arrives, with early-joining users needing to wait until they arrive. Google also notes that some functions that require server-side processing or parsing of call media will not work, such as the likes of cloud-based noise cancellation or closed captions. "Bringing Client-side encryption to Meet is another significant milestone in Google Workspace’s industry-leading encryption work, offering our users the highest degree of protection and control over their data," a Google Workspace update blog post(opens in new tab) announcing the news said. Workspace Client-side encryption for Meet is coming to web users first, with support for meeting rooms and mobile devices coming soon. For now, only internal participants in your Workspace organization can be invited to the new secure calls, with Google saying guest access will be introduced soon. The service is available now to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus customers. However, users on Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals, The Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Frontline, and Nonprofits, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, won't be able to access it. source:https://www.techradar.com/news/google-meet-is-getting-a-serious-security-upgrade
  2. In a new video(opens in new tab) on its YouTube channel, Intel has shared fresh benchmarks of the chipmaker's upcoming Arc A750 Limited Edition graphics card. According to Intel's 1080p and 1440p results, the Arc A750's performance is on the same level as Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3060, one of the best graphics cards. The cumulative results claim that the Arc A750 delivered up to 3% higher performance than the GeForce RTX 3060 at 1080p and up to 5% in 1440p across 43 DirectX 12 titles. The Arc A750 performed slightly faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 in games that use the Vulkan API as well. Intel recorded up to a 4% performance delta at 1080p and 5% in 1440p in favor of the Arc A750. Intel hasn't officially revealed the specifications for the Arc A750. However, the graphics card will likely come with 24 Xe cores, 3,072 shaders, and 12GB of GDDR6 memory across a 192-bit interface. In addition, the boost clock speed probably hovers around the 2,300 MHz mark. Meanwhile, Intel used EVGA's GeForce RTX 3060 XC Gaming for comparison, one of the faster custom GeForce RTX 3060 on the market, flaunting a 1,882 MHz boost clock.Intel benchmarked the Arc A750 and GeForce RTX 3060 identical systems powered by the Core i9-12900K, the current Alder Lake flagship. The testbeds also had 32GB of (2x16GB) Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR5-5200 C38 downlocked to 4,800 MHz memory, MP600 Pro XT 4TB SSD. Intel used Windows 11 and the balance power plan for the tests. One thing to note is that the Arc A750 was on Intel's engineering driver, whereas the GeForce RTX 3060 used the GeForce 516.59 WHQL driver. Arc Alchemist's drivers are still a work in process, so that could be holding the Arc A750 back in the gaming benchmarks. Intel has admitted that Arc underperforms in older APIs, so the company only used DirectX 12 and Vulkan titles.Intel still has a lot of time to get its driver act together. The company hasn't committed to a specific timeframe for desktop Arc Alchemist's launch. However, the chipmaker stated in a recent blog post(opens in new tab), "Intel Arc GPUs are scheduled for release later this year." 10. Face-recognition technology is advancing apace and has applications in security and biometrics, marketing, education, criminal investigation, and many other areas. It can now not only recognize the person but can ascertain the expression on their face. Research in the International Journal of Biometrics tackles the limitations of face recognition software when the person's face is partly obscured, by a veil or protective face mask, for instance. It can recognize whether a veiled person or person wearing a COVID mask is or is not smiling, by analyzing the eyes, with 80.9% accuracy. Tests were carried out on an image database of 150 people, 41 male and 109 female subjects aged from 8 to 78 years old. Ahmad B.A. Hassanat of Mutah University in Karak and Abeer Ahmad Albustanji of the Ministry of Environment in Amman, Jordan, Ahmad S. Tarawneh of Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary, Malek Alrashidi, Mansoor Alghamdi, and Ibrahim S. Alkhazi of the University of Tabuk, Hani Alharbi of the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Alanazi of Cranfield University, U.K., and V.B. Surya Prasath of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S., used a deep convolutional neural network to develop their recognition system. The neural network has 4,096 features in each layer of the recognition process. The team points out that their proof of principle—known as DeepVeil—involved the use of an in-house image database, with face-on images of veiled persons taken at close range. The next step will be to work with a more diverse set of images recorded in a range of settings including photos taken from different angles. That said, in the early days of conventional facial recognition systems, a clear face-on image was needed to verify a person's identity, but that is no longer the case as the algorithms and software have evolved. So, the same will, with the right approach and further development, likely become true for DeepVeil. source:https://techxplore.com/news/2022-08-face-recognition-software-veil.html

  12. Reviews for Cult of the Lamb--a game that is equal parts adorable and disturbing--have gone live at a number of outlets. A combination of roguelike gameplay mixed with fast-paced dungeon-crawling, the critical reception has been mostly positive so far. "Nine times out of 10, being a lamb led to the slaughter is not the best position to find yourself in," Jessica Howard wrote in GameSpot's Cult of the Lamb review. "That tenth time, however, is while playing Massive Monster's Cult of the Lamb, a delightfully demented roguelike that combines fast-paced dungeoneering, bold art, dark topics, and real-time simulation elements to create a one-of-a-kind experience." Game: Cult of the Lamb Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch Developer: Massive Monster Release Date: August 11, 2022 Price: $25 Several critics have praised the game for its inspired design, engaging gameplay, and how it deftly combines genres into a fast, fluid and fun experience. On GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, Cult of the Lamb currently holds an aggregate score of 84 from 44 reviews. Here's what other critics have to say about Cult of the Lamb. GameSpot - 90/100 "Whether you are exploring the dungeons or expanding your cult, the experience is enjoyable, challenging, and more than a bit demented. With how surprisingly dense each of these parts are, the fact that all the pieces come together as smoothly as they do is a triumph." Destructoid - 85/100 "I'm a big fan of roguelite action games and city builders, but even if you're on the mild side, Cult of the Lamb is a winning combo. It draws many of the best aspects of those genres, places them in a one-of-a-kind world, and charts its own condensed course. The result is hard to put down. Despite the morbid subject matter and potential for player fatigue, this is such an easy game to recommend to a wide audience. Go on, spread the good word." PC Gamer - 82/100 "Cult of the Lamb is clever, it's wonderfully designed, and the script is sharp and funny. The atmosphere is great, helped in no small part by art which immediately endears itself to you. Speaking of which, making all of your followers adorable wickle critters was a smart choice. Intentionally or otherwise, it makes the brainwashing and murky morals amusing rather than disturbing." Game Informer - 80/100 "From the fast-paced dungeon combat that never grew stale to the factory-like base building that nailed the stress of resource management, was enough and then some to keep me engaged and indoctrinated." IGN - 80/100 "Cult of the Lamb is as adorable as it is unsettling, an eclectic mix of genres and themes that come together extremely well. Its combat is immensely satisfying even if its short runs and the relative lack of variety between them doesn't give it the lasting appeal of other action roguelikes, and building my very own cult base and tending to a flock of followers was just as fun as any swing of the axe. I may not revisit it now that the credits have rolled, but Cult of the Lamb is something altogether different that I had an absolute blast playing. " Polygon - Unscored "The roguelike action-adventure game Cult of the Lamb wraps the grotesque in a charming little package of characters that look like they could be pulled straight from a children's story. The 2D animations are simple, but snappy. And despite the overarching narrative being one of vengeance, consumption, and sacrifice, there is a sort of levity here, with picture book-style illustrations and vibrant 2D backgrounds." Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Unscored "Cult Of The Lamb absolutely oozes charisma and excitement at the tiniest opportunity, and it's hard not to be taken in by the loving attention to detail on display while you're playing. The combat aspect may be a little lacking in content, but it's good enough to hold its own and keep me entertained between periods spent carefully taking care of my growing legion of adoring followers. And sacrificing them for my amusement, of course. That bit's important too." NME - 60/100 "Cult of the Lamb is so inspired and enticing in the beginning, but it feels crushed under the weight of its own ambition. A bit like a real cult, then? A smart but flawed indie game with a good heart, Massive Monster’s latest is well worth a look if you have played and enjoyed its varied inspirations, but it can’t quite deliver on the promise of controlling an emergent cult of critters, at least in a way that feels free of bugs or repetitive busywork." source;https://www.gamespot.com/articles/review-roundup-for-cult-of-the-lamb/1100-6506330/
  13. Be prepared to take this with a sizable pinch of whatever passes for salt in the Destiny 2 universe, but it appears an artist at Bungie may have inadvertently given a glimpse of the game's next subclass. The leak came in the form of a clip allegedly posted to an Artstation account, as first reported by DestinyTwoLeaks on Twitter. I can't confirm the provenance because the linked post has been pulled, but—this being the internet—the clip is still easy enough to find. I've embedded it at the top. At first glance, it just shows a Titan performing the 'Swing of the Scythe' finisher, which is available as part of the current season pass. However, cast your eyes down to the bottom left and things get more interesting. The HUD elements are all green, which doesn't tally with any current subclass in the game. Most intriguing, the super icon (ie your ult) is also new. Finally, the character has three melee charges available, which isn't possible with any current class in the game. Naturally, fan speculation is running rampant, with many seemingly convinced that this all but confirms that the next subclass will be some sort of poison/decay variant (based, as far as I can tell, on the fact that poison has long been rumoured and the colour green feels kinda poisony). Here's what I'd say: Yes, we can be pretty sure that a new subclass is on the way. No, we still have no clearer sense of what that will be. source:https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-fans-jump-on-leak-as-evidence-that-a-new-poison-subclass-coming/
  14. Ahead of the launch of Season 14, a new trailer breaks down what the Hunted battle pass will contain when it launches in Apex Legends this week. Apex Legends Season 14 is rapidly approaching, set to kick off on August 9. Set to introduce new character Vantage, as well as a bevy of changes to the layout of Kings Canyon, the upcoming season seems to be an overall refresher. Ahead of the launch of Season 14, Respawn Entertainment released a new trailer detailing what players can expect in the newest battle pass coming to Apex Legends. As per usual, there will be plenty of character and weapon skins along with new holosprays, a huge amount of survival themed cosmetics, and a shiny new reactive skin that will unlock upon the completion of the battle pass. source:https://gamerant.com/apex-legends-season-14-battle-pass/
