Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus will snub Chelsea for Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United want AC Milan’s Stephan El Shaarawy, and Arsenal want Mario Suarez – we rate the transfer rumours. TRANSFER RUMOUR: Marco Reus will snub interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City in order to sign for Real Madrid (Daily Star). RUMOUR RATING: Could happen. In the footballing world, you have Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They are the undoubted top two, and no-one in the modern game comes close. In that next echelon, players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Manuel Neuer, Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez and Marco Reus reside. Of the stars in this second bracket, few are available for Europe’s elite to snap up, but Borussia Dortmund man Reus fits that criteria. The loss of Reus to two separate injuries so far this season has rocked Dortmund so far. At 25, the forward is the attacking talisman for BVB, and looks set to follow in the footsteps of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski in fine-tuning their game in yellow and black before moving on to a ‘bigger’ club. With Reus though, you don’t feel that he’s desperate to leave. Having missed Germany’s successful World Cup campaign, the forward is more hungry than ever, and will feel that he has plenty of unfinished business under Jurgen Klopp. If he makes his long-awaited return in the new year, look out for Dortmund’s stop-start season to kick into the higher gears. But what after that? In the summer, if Reus has truly rekindled Dortmund’s season, one issue remains: his contract. The reported release clause, which stands at around £20million, looms over the Germans, and with the top clubs circling, they may not even have a choice when it comes to Reus’ [CENSORED]ure. If Reus does leave, there are a select few clubs of the necessary calibre to lure him. The likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United cannot truly claim to be considerably better – if at all better – than Dortmund, so why would Reus join them? Bayern Munich is a possibility, but Reus has previously stated his disapproval over former team-mates Gotze and Lewandowski’s moves there. Chelsea or Barcelona, perhaps, but where would he fit in? Logically, that leaves the superstar haven of Real Madrid, and don’t bet against Reus being the next Galactico at the Bernabeu come June. TRANSFER RUMOUR: Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to battle it out for AC Milan winger Stephan El Shaarawy, who is available for just £11.5million (Daily Express). RUMOUR RATING: Unlikely to happen. A brace in this week’s friendly may have reminded many an on-looker of the potential that Stephan El Shaarawy was once said to possess. Signed by AC Milan as a teenager in 2011, the 22-year-old was tipped as one of the shining lights of Italy’s footballing [CENSORED]ure. Having burst onto the scene with 14 goals in his first 17 Serie A games of the 2012/13 season, El Shaarawy was on the radar of top clubs around the globe. Just two more goals in the rest of that season followed, and an injury-hit 2013/14 meant the winger faded into the background. The Italian has bounced back somewhat this season, featuring in 11 of Milan’s 16 games. The reason El Shaarawy’s [CENSORED]ure may come under questioning is certainly not down to the player, but is perhaps a result of his club’s current position. Sitting 7th in the league, two points off European qualification, things have been far worse for AC Milan in recent times. Filippo Inzaghi has recently been appointed in an attempt to instigate a resurgence from the side whose previous reliance on experience has recently come back to bite them. After winning the 2007 Champions League, they have been on a downward spiral ever since. As a result, Inzaghi reportedly wants to rejuvenate his squad with new signings, and as one of Milan’s most profitable assets, El Shaarawy could be pushed to the exit door. While the Real Madrids and Barcelonas of this world won’t come calling, it’s perfectly possible that clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United will. With the attacking talent on display at United, Louis van Gaal is unlikely to move for the forward, however. El Shaarawy may be talented, but he isn’t of the level of Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney or Juan [CENSORED]. For Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers may find the appeal in rejuvenating the youngster’s career, but it would represent a big risk for the Northern Irishman. As things stand, El Shaarawy’s [CENSORED]ure lays at the San Siro. In fact, the 22-year-old admitted as much himself after that two-goal salvo against Real Madrid: “I’ve already said, I’m staying at Milan and I want to do well.” That doesn’t sound like a player on the verge of moving. TRANSFER RUMOUR: Arsenal are set to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez, who has only played a bit-part role this season (Daily Star). RUMOUR RATING: Could happen. At least one defender and at least one midfielder. That is how simple Arsene Wenger’s January shopping list should look. For all the beauty Alexis Sanchez adds to the team, Arsenal’s frailties are still on show week in week out. If Champions League progression is to be ensured, the Frenchman needs to reinforce his squad in the transfer market. Mats Hummels, Aymeric Laporte, William Carvalho, Morgan Schneiderlin and many more; Arsenal are certainly not short of options for either position. Many of these players are unrealistic and expensive targets, however. In January, Wenger could move for a stop-gap, a solid and relatively cheap improvement on what he already has, with a view to spending big in the summer. Winter transfers are always a risk, after all. If he does go down this route, Wenger should look no further than Suarez. Mario Suarez, that is. The Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder has been at the Vicente Calderon since 2010, and played a part in their La Liga title win and Champions League runners-up place last season. With 17 appearances however, he wasn’t a mainstay in the first-team. He filled in admirably when needed, but Atletico have enough steel in midfield with Tiago, Raul Garcia, Gabi and Saul Niguez among their options, something Arsenal cannot boast. So title-winning experience, relative youth at just 27, and he will come cheap as Atletico would be willing to sell. With Arsenal’s resident bulldog being Mathieu Flamini, it’s easy to see how Suarez would improve the Gunners at least temporarily.

According to reports in Spain, the Old Trafford club will complete the £50m transfer this month. The Colombia striker has been on loan from Monaco since the start of the season, scoring twice in 11 appearances. The 28-year-old has struggled with fitness issues after suffering a long-term knee injury last year. But in recent weeks he has begun to impress, scoring a a classy header against Aston Villa and laying on a goal for Wayne Rooney with a clever pass. Falcao moved to Monaco in 2013 from Atletico Madrid but with the money running dry in the south of France his parent club are keen to cash in. Falcao, despite his age and injury frailty, with command a huge fee in the region of £40m and wages of close to £200,000. United are expected to spend big again this window with their eyes on a new central defender and a centre midfielder. They have been linked with moves for Kevin Strootman, Mats Hummels and Seamus Coleman.

The Gunners are understood to have lodged a £9m offer for the Frenchman ahead of the January transfer window. But if today's reports are to be believed, the Magpies are expected to knock back Arsene Wenger's efforts to bring the 25-year-old to the Emirates. Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signing of the Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United. Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda has suggested that Suarez 'will almost certainly go in the winter window' due to being behind Gabi, Tiago, Raul Garcia and Saul Niguez in the pecking order. Arsenal, United and Liverpool have all been told by AC Milan to cough up £11.5m if they want to sign Stephan El Shaarawy during the winter window. The Serie A giants are interested in selling the Italian forward in order to create funds for a squad makeover.

Real Madrid have told Manchester United that Gareth Bale is not for sale at any price. United have been linked with a summer move for Bale, who signed for the European champions in a world-record B£85.3million transfer 16 months ago. The United board has informed manager Louis van Gaal there is a significant amount of money to spend if he feels his squad needs strengthening, and Bale's signing would be a considerable coup for the 20-time English champions. But the Welshman is going nowhere, according to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, "We have not received an offer from Manchester or any other club for Gareth Bale," Perez was quoted as saying on Marca's website. "We would never listen to any offer for Bale, no matter what the fee." Van Gaal refused to discuss a potential bid for Bale at a press conference last week. "I discuss that with my CEO (Ed Woodward) and not with anyone of the media," said the Dutchman, who spent B£155m on six new players during his first transfer window as United boss. United were in the running to sign Bale when he left Tottenham in September 2013 but he opted to move to Spain, where he has enjoyed considerable success since. The 25-year-old was part of the Madrid team that lifted the Champions League last season and he also won the Copa del Rey in his first year at the club. Bale has so far scored 11 goals this season for Madrid, who are top of the Primera Division.

David De Gea has become one of the best in the league. Photo: PA David de Gea says he felt like comic book super hero Captain America following his remarkable transformation from skinny youngster to hulking goalkeeper. Much was expected of De Gea when he signed for Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but the then 20-year-old struggled for form straight away, making several costly errors. The teenager's scrawny, gangly frame did not help matters. The Spaniard was unable to deal with the physicality of the Barclays Premier League and his confidence was low as a result. Fast-forward three and a half years and De Gea has turned into one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, thanks partly to a more robust physique, which he attributes to a strengthening programme he embarked upon shortly after joining United. So impressed was the Spain international that he likened his transformation to that of Marvel comic book character Steve Rogers, a weak Irish immigrant who morphed into muscular soldier Captain America after taking a serum administered by the US Army. "I was like Captain America in one year," De Gea said with a smile on United's website. "I still do the programme, although not as much as before. "It is more of a reduced programme now but certainly I did a lot of gym work at the start and it did have a big impact." De Gea has saved United on several occasions this season. His latest goalkeeping master class came on Sunday when he kept Tottenham at bay in the 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane. At the end of October the former Atletico Madrid stopper won United all three points against Everton with fine saves to deny Bryan Oviedo, Leon Osman and Leighton Baines from the penalty spot. De Gea was slight when he arrived. Credit: PA De Gea thinks every aspect of his game has improved since he moved to Old Trafford. "I have been here for four years now and I think that every aspect of my goalkeeping has improved," De Gea told ManUtd.com. "It is hard to single out one area because we have worked and improved on everything. "I think the fact that I have started to do interviews in English has really helped as well, it has helped me to learn more of the language as well." Despite his recent displays, De Gea thinks he can still improve. "Again, no matter how excellent your form is, you can always get better and there are always aspects of your game that you can improve," he said. "You can improve everything. No matter how well people think you are playing, or how well you think you are playing yourself, it is always a case of working on every facet of your game. There is hopefully more to come." Such has been De Gea's form, that Real Madrid have become interested in signing the 24-year-old as a replacement for Iker Casillas. De Gea has 18 months left on his United contract, but the club are confident the goalkeeper will remain at United despite interest from the 10-time European champions

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid says striker Fernando Torres will return to the club on loan from AC Milan. In a statement Monday, Atletico says the loan will start next Monday when the transfer window opens in Italy but is subject to Torres passing a medical examination. He will be with Milan for the rest of this season and next season. Atletico says the 30-year-old Torres, who was born in the Madrid suburb of Fuenlabrada, "returns to his home, where he trained as a player and became one of its biggest stars." Torres joined Liverpool from Atletico and then went to Chelsea where he won the Champions League, Europa League and the FA Cup as well as forming part of Spain's squad that won the World Cup and two consecutive European Championships. Former Birmingham owner David Sullivan claims the Blues could have signed Cristiano Ronaldo for £6 million before he moved to Manchester United in 2003. The Portugal international was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as an 18-year-old and moved to Old Trafford from Sporting in a deal worth £12.24m. Ronaldo went on to spend six years at United, winning the Champions League and three Premier League titles before signing for Real Madrid in 2009. However, Sullivan claims Birmingham could have captured the teenager who was offered to the Blues before opting to sign for the Red Devils. "Before he went to Man United, we were offered him for £6 million, and he chose United ahead of us," he told Sky Sports programme 'Soccer AM'. "There was a deal to be done. When he first went to United there were lots of doubts about him. He wasn’t the star that he is now."
