  1. Google hasn't been shy about pushing artificial intelligence into its various apps and services, and it seems that the venerable Google Maps could be next in line to get an integrated AI chatbot of its own. Code hidden in the latest beta version of Google Maps for Android, as spotted by Android Authority, makes various mentions of in-app conversations – including the line "you're talking with a chatbot", which sort of gives the game away. However, only a few strings of related code have been spotted so far, so we don't have too much more information about this chatbot in terms of what form it will take, what it's designed to do, and how it will integrate with the rest of Google Maps. Nothing is certain yet, and of course Google could easily change its mind about the Maps chatbot – but given the company's focus on AI these last few months, we wouldn't be surprised to see this new feature arriving in the app very soon. Getting chatty Without any official word from Google, we're left to speculate what an AI chatbot in Google Maps might do. As Android Authority points out, it could well be something to do with submitting reviews and comments to Google Maps, perhaps via the Local Guides program. The line of code that says "thank you for your contribution" certainly backs that up. Perhaps a chatbot might swing into action when you've visited a place, asking what your experience was like or what you thought of the service. Another possibility is that the upcoming bot will actually give you travel advice: what to see in a particular area, where the best places to stay are, and so on. This would be similar to the advice that Google Bard (now with Google Maps integration) can already give. AI chatbots might also be used to field questions from Google Maps users to businesses – questions about opening hours and facilities, for example. Right now, these questions can be posted and answered by humans, but AI might be about to step in.
  2. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) just posted its Q3 earnings report, and its profit declined 80% compared to last year (via CNBC). As China's largest foundry, SMIC represents the cutting-edge of the country's semiconductor fabbing industry, and it's clear that things aren't going super well. Global factors are partly to blame for SMIC's poor showing in Q3. The global economy isn't in great health due to high inflation, which has resulted in lower consumer spending. In China, inflation hasn't been a problem, but consumers are decreasing spending as they focus on paying off debt. SMIC also has to contend with U.S. sanctions over Chinese silicon, and the company Still, SMIC's decline in profit is particularly notable compared to its rival TSMC. While TSMC also experienced a decline in profit, it was a mere 12% as opposed to 80%. Regarding technology, SMIC is significantly behind TSMC, as the former is only just getting to 7nm while TSMC is working on its upcoming 2nm node. A sharp decline in profitability will likely impede SMIC's attempt to catch up. SMIC hasn't ever been a cutting-edge foundry, launching its 28nm node in 2015, the same year TSMC reached 16nm. When SMIC launched its 14nm process in 2019, TSMC had been offering 7nm for about a year. Today, although SMIC is apparently going to be able to progress to 7nm and 5nm, by the time that happens it's likely that American-friendly foundries like TSMC, Intel, and Samsung will have sub-2nm processes. It's also bad news for China's ambitions to build up a native semiconductor industry. If China wants to be able to produce chips as fast as those designed by companies like AMD and Nvidia, and fabbed at TSMC or Samsung, then cutting-edge nodes are going to be needed at foundries like SMIC.

  7. Microsoft’s Bing AI may be close to finally getting plug-ins, a feature that has been experimented with before, and will make the chatbot considerably more versatile and powerful (in theory, anyway). Windows Latest reports that the update to add plug-ins has rolled out to a ‘small’ number of Bing Chat users over the weekend, and the tech site was one of those to get access. Note that it appears the rollout is only happening for those using the Canary version of Microsoft’s Edge browser (and Windows Latest only got the feature in that preview release, not in the finished version of Edge). We’re told that the AI currently offers five plug-ins to testers and you can pick any three of those to use in a session. If you want to change plug-ins, you’ll need to start a new Bing Chat session. Windows Latest carried out some testing with a couple of those plug-ins, and the results seemed useful, with the OpenTable add-on providing some restaurant recommendations in a query. Other plug-ins available in testing include Kayak, Klarna, and a shopping add-on for buying suggestions – we’ve already got you covered there, of course, especially for the imminent Black Friday sale – but it may be the case that different plug-ins appear for different users. Analysis: Faster and better Eventually, of course, there will be a whole load of plug-ins for the Bing AI, or that’s certainly Microsoft’s plan, although they’ll doubtless be rolled out in stages over time. One of those will be the much-awaited ‘no search’ function that was switched to be implemented via a plug-in not so long ago. (This allows the user to specify that the AI can’t use search content scraped from the web in its responses). We’ve seen plug-ins in a limited test rollout before (in August), but they were pulled, so this is effectively a return of the feature – hinting it might arrive sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed, and the good news is that Windows Latest observes that these new plug-ins seem to be more responsive and work better than the old efforts (performance-related concerns are likely one of the reasons that the test plug-ins got pulled earlier this year).
  8. The age of full-fledged RISC-V data center CPUs is nearly upon us, as Ventana's 192-core Veryon V2 is coming in 2024 (via ServeTheHome). Ventana, founded in 2018, claims the Veryon V2 edges ahead of AMD's Genoa and Bergamo Epyc CPUs. However, the company foresees much bigger victories down the line with its domain-specific accelerator (or DSA) chiplets, which Ventana forecasts will deliver large performance boosts compared to typical CPUs. RISC-V is an open standard (previously open source) CPU architecture that has been used in many applications but is just now popping up in servers. The Veryon V2 will be Ventana's first server CPUs to market, as the Veryon V1 has seemingly been canceled and skipped over. Compared to V1, V2 has more cores and cache per chiplet, the slightly newer 4nm node from TSMC instead of the 5nm node, and standard RISC-V RVA23 vector instructions, as Ventana originally planned on using its own instructions. However, Ventana wants its CPUs to follow RISC-V standards to improve hardware-software compatibility. To that end, it has also added RISC-V Software Ecosystem (or RISE) support to the V2. The Veyron V2 takes a leaf out of AMD's server CPUs by using a chiplet design featuring an I/O hub chiplet and compute chiplets with CPU cores. However, Ventana also offers DSA chiplets that can accelerate specific workloads, and the company claims this will offer vastly higher performance than what is possible with a traditional CPU without hardware acceleration. Additionally, the I/O hub can also be customized with hardware acceleration, which AMD also doesn't offer. Ventana claims its approach to CPU design in using chiplets and DSA hardware will reduce development time to less than a year and costs to less than $25 million, and that it would take twice as many x86 or ARM CPUs to match the Veryon V2. Take this all with a grain of salt, though, as Ventana's server CPU will arrive in 2024, and probably the latter half of 2024 at that, according to ServeTheHome.

  13. A new Windows 11 preview build, KB5031455, that enables the AI-powered assistant, Windows Copilot, is reportedly causing havoc to desktop icons. Windows 11 Build KB5031455 is one of a series of updates that have come to us via Windows Update and through the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft’s official community for Windows enthusiasts and industry professionals that help try new versions of Windows and features before they’re rolled out to all Windows users. Build KB5031455 was released in October and was packed full of new developments like Windows Copilot. Other feature updates include reworkings of the Start menu, File Explorer, and native system support for more archive file formats. However, it’s not all been smooth sailing, and some users are reporting problems. According to BetaNews, Microsoft has acknowledged that there’s a known problem with the preview build where desktop icons are shuffled around. This apparently happens due to Copilot’s interaction with Windows multi-display setups. The update is pretty stacked feature-wise, so it’s somewhat expected that there’s an issue here or there for certain users. That said, the affected users will probably be hoping for a fix as soon as possible, especially as most are looking forward to getting to take Copilot for a spin. Also, this is the sort of feedback that these preview builds are for. What Microsoft has to say about the matter Microsoft has shared the release notes for the preview build in a Support post detailing the nature of the updates and changes, as well as the known issues in the update. About the above issue, Microsoft writes the following: “Windows devices using more than one monitor might experience issues with desktop icons moving unexpectedly between monitors or other icon alignment issues when attempting to use Copilot in Windows (in preview).” It then goes on to explain that there’s no existing workaround or solution, and Microsoft recommends that Windows Copilot isn’t used on devices that are currently using a multi-monitor configuration. It does offer some consolation in that a resolution is currently being developed and will be released in a future update. This is a fairly typical response from Microsoft but it does also have a reputation for turning around solutions for such problems, even if it can take a little while. I think we can expect to see one soon, especially as this was picked up after a preview build was released. These are specifically released to test and monitor for feedback, so an opportunity to improve a feature is perfectly normal for a Windows release like this, and Microsoft will be keen to make sure its flashy new Copilot feature works well for as many users as possible - including people who use more than one screen.
  14. Sony's PlayStation 5 game console can be praised for its vast game collection available for the PlayStation platform, futuristic design, and storage upgradeability using off-the-shelf M.2 solid-state drives (SSDs). The recently introduced PS5 'Slim' maintains the advantages of the original version while being smaller. Apparently, it still uses the same AMD processor featuring Zen 2 general-purpose cores and Radeon RDNA 2 GPU and consumes the same amount of power. Sony's new PS5 Slim is powered by the same AMD-designed system-on-chip (SoC) made on TSMC's N6 (7nm-class with enhancements) that powers the original one. Yet, the new console has a completely re-engineered motherboard, which allowed Sony to reduce the system's size and weight, as discovered by Linus Tech Tips and Dave2D. To make the machine smaller, Sony's engineers not only redesigned the motherboard but had to redesign its cooling system to fit into the new chassis. The new cooling system has five heatpipes (up from four in the case of the original one) and a smaller backplate. Despite being generally smaller than the original one, the revamped cooling system is efficient enough to sustain the console's performance under high loads while maintaining rather low noise levels. Based on the findings, PS5 Slim produces 33.6 dBA of noise, whereas the original one generates 33.8 dBA. Sony's PS5 Slim has a similar design to the original one, so it still features a futuristic look with a combination of glossy and matte finishes, which clearly attracts attention. Meanwhile, the vents have been simplified, removing the stylized design of the original in favor of a more straightforward, lighter structure. These design choices, along with an optimized storage configuration (1 TB is now available for the user), additional USB ports, and a smaller power supply unit, end up in a console that retains the performance of the original PS5 while boasting a slimmer, lighter profile. Over time, Sony's PlayStation 5 Slim versions will replace the original models on the market. Keeping in mind that the new revisions offer more storage and more ports while retaining the performance of the original one, this will clearly please buyers.

  21. Musician Name:John Winston Ono Lennon Birthday / Location: 9 October 1940 Liverpool, Merseyside, England Death December 8, 1980 (age 40)New York, New York, United States Main instrument: Rock Pop Experimental Skiffle Vanguarda Musician Picture: Musician Awards & Nominations:- Best Performance: - Other Information: John Winston Ono Lennon MBE (Liverpool, 9 October 1940 – New York, 8 December 1980) was a British singer, songwriter and peace activist who founded the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of po[CENSORED]r music. His songwriting partnership with bandmate Paul McCartney was one of the most celebrated in music history. Along with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the group achieved worldwide fame during the 1960s. In 1969, Lennon started the Plastic Ono Band with his second wife, Yoko Ono, and continued to pursue a solo career after the Beatles split in April 1970. Born in Liverpool, Lennon became interested in the skiffle genre as a teenager. In 1956, he formed his first band, The Quarrymen, which culminated in the creation of the Beatles in 1960. Initially he was the de facto leader of the group, but he gradually lost this position to McCartney. Lennon was characterized by his rebellious and sagacious nature in his music, writing, drawing, films and interviews. At the height of his fame in the 1960s, he published two books: In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, both collections of nonsense writing and scribble drawings. Beginning in 1967 with "All You Need Is Love", his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and counterculture of the time. Between 1968 and 1972, Lennon produced more than a dozen recordings with Ono, including a trilogy of avant-garde albums, his first solo album – John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band – and the international hits "Give Peace a Chance", "Instant Karma !", "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". In 1969, he led a series of peace protests known as Bed-Ins for Peace. After moving to New York in 1971, his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a long attempt by the Richard Nixon administration to deport him. In 1975, Lennon retired from the music industry to care for his second son, Sean, and in 1980 he returned with another collaboration with Ono, the album Double Fantasy. He was murdered in front of his Manhattan home by Mark Chapman, a Beatles fan, three weeks after the release of his latest album. As a performer, songwriter or collaborator, Lennon had 25 number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. Double Fantasy, his best-selling solo album, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year shortly after his death. In 1982, the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music was given to him posthumously. In 2002, Lennon was named the eighth greatest Briton of all time by the BBC. Rolling Stone magazine named him the fifth best singer in history and included him in the list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. In 1987, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Lennon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994.
