  2. iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro colour options have been visualised in renders ahead of their expected debut next month as the successors to last year's iPhone 14 series of smartphones. While Apple is yet to share any details regarding these handsets, a publication has shared renders of the iPhone that were based on leaked information. This year, Apple is tipped to drop two existing colourways in favour of new options for the purported iPhone 15 Pro models that are said to feature a titanium chassis. Detailed renders created by 9to5Mac's Ian Zelbo, show the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in Black, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow colour options. According to the publication, the renders were generated based on "detailed colour codes" provided by a source. The renders show the rear panel of the smartphone with light pastel colours. The camera module is located at the top left corner, with a familiar diagonal layout for the dual camera setup. Meanwhile, the renders created for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max show the handsets in Blue, Silver, Space Black, and Titan Gray. All four colour options show the upcoming handsets sport a triple rear camera setup that looks quite similar to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. While these leaked renders do not include these details, the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup is tipped to feature USB Type-C ports unlike previously models that support Apple's proprietary Lightning connector. Reports have hinted at the inclusion of Thunderbolt/ USB 4 support and faster charging speeds — up to 35W on the iPhone 15 series. Similarly, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are said to use an Action button instead of the company's iconic mute switch. This button is said to be programmable and recent reports and leaked case images suggest that it can be customised to perform certain functions on the smartphone in addition to toggling silent/ring modes. While these hardware changes aren't visible on the renders — they are expected to be unveiled by the company at its next launch event that could reportedly take place on September 12.
  3. Key Windows 11 features may soon be customizable as Microsoft further integrates its Windows Copilot AI assistant into the operating system. This tidbit comes from tech news site Windows Latest, which claims to have discovered new .json (JavaScript Object Notation) files within recent preview builds of Windows 11. These files apparently hint at future upgrades for the desktop AI assistant. For example, a “TaskManagerService-ai-plugin.json” was found which is supposedly a “plugin for Task Manager integration”. If this ever comes out, it could give users the ability to “monitor or close running apps using” Copilot. In total, six are currently tested and they affect various aspects of Windows 11. Next, there is an “AccessbilityTools-ai-plugin.json” that gives Copilot a way to “control accessibility [tools]. This would make it "easier for those with [a] disability to navigate through the system.” Third is “ai-plugin-WindowsSettings.json” for controlling important Windows 11 settings. Which ones exactly are not stated within the report. Fourth is “ClockService-ai-plugin.json” to help people manage their computer’s alarm settings. Rounding out the pack are “LaunchApplication-ai-plugin.json and SmartFileActions-ai-plugin.json” for opening apps through AI commands. Modular control hub Windows Copilot was in limited release when it first came out back in late June 2023, and it was pretty barebones. Since then, Microsoft has been repeatedly upgrading the AI function to be more comprehensive. Earlier reports state Copilot may be able search for specific files as well as offer “store suggestions”, presumably for apps to download at the Microsoft Store. You may read all this and think that the AI assistant may become a bloated mess, but on the contrary, it might not. Due to the fact all the .json files mentioned are plugins, Windows Copilot will most likely be a modular tool, meaning you can pick and choose particular Windows 11 features it can control. This effectively turns the AI into your personal control hub for the OS. Upgraded AI assistants Of course, that’s assuming the final version will release exactly as we just described. Nothing in the news story has been officially confirmed by Microsoft. Be aware there’s a chance, if small, that the company could terminate certain plugins at any time. So far, the updates have been first-party only. Windows Latest claims the tech giant could begin offering third-party plugin support within the coming weeks. Partnered third-party companies or developers remain unknown at the time of this writing. Generative AI models have opened a lot of possibilities for personal assistants. Gone are the days of asking simple questions to Siri or Cortana. Technological improvements have made it possible for AIs to help in our day-to-day tasks. Google, for example, is working on an AI writing tool for upcoming Chromebooks. To learn more, we recommend checking out TechRadar’s list of the best AI chatbots for 2023 to see what the technology is capable of.
  4. T-Platforms, the parent company of Russian chipmaker Baikal Electronics, has declared bankruptcy and is auctioning off its assets, including intellectual property related to Baikal processors, one of a few designers of CPUs and system-on-chips from Russia, reports CNews. According to Kommersant, the total value of these assets is estimated at $5 million. T-Platforms, a Russian company with ambitions to build exascale supercomputers and develop domestic CPUs, was officially declared bankrupt in October 2022. T-Platforms had been among the few Russian companies capable of producing supercomputers that could compete on a global scale. T-Platform's bankruptcy proceedings have led to the auctioning of various assets, including the intellectual property, patents, and shares of Baikal Electronics. The IP is related to the development of Baikal processors, which rely on the Arm and MIPS instruction set architectures. The technology being auctioned is outdated, to say the least. The Baikal-M1 processor, for instance, is based on eight outdated Arm Cortex-A57 cores operating at 1.50 GHz and outfitted with an 8MB L3 cache that is accompanied by an eight-cluster Arm Mali-T628 GPU with two display pipelines. TSMC made the SoC on its 28nm fabrication process. Meanwhile, Baikal's 48-core Baikal-S SoC for servers has never entered mass production. Since both processors are now obsolete, Baikal's assets have been valued at 484 million rubles ($5 million). The auction is scheduled for September 26, 2023. The current owners of Baikal Electronics have no plans to reclaim the patents or developments. This is perhaps because Baikal used to develop CPUs and SoCs that were subsequently produced by TSMC, and the latter can no longer work with Russian companies due to export curbs imposed by the Taiwanese government following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022. The future of Baikal Electronics remains uncertain. The company has not announced new processors for several years, and production was halted in February 2022 due to sanctions. Despite the outdated technology and market skepticism, the auction is proceeding, and it remains to be seen who will acquire these assets and for what purpose.

  11. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra specifications have leaked online, months ahead of the expected debut of the company's top-of-the-line flagship smartphone for 2024. The successor to the Galaxy S23 Ultra that was unveiled this year could feature a display with flat edges, according to an image leaked on the microblogging website X (formerly Twitter). The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to feature Qualcomm's yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC that is also expected to power most flagship smartphones from a range of manufacturers next year. Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) posted an image of the purported Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra on Monday that shows the front portion of the handset. Unlike its predecessor, this handset appears to sport a display without curved edges. The bezels on the display appear similar to this year's model. The leaked image also shows a centre-aligned hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera located at the top of the display. The display specifications of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra were also leaked by Ice Universe, who has a good track record of sharing details of Samsung products well before they are announced. According to the tipster, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will sport a 6.78-inch display with a resolution of 1,440x3,120 pixels, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and up to 2,500 nits of peak brightness. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was previously tipped to measure 162.3x79x8.6mm. The handset is also said to be powered by Samsung's Exynos 2400 chipset or Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in different markets. The handset is expected to run on Google's upcoming Android 14 operating system, with the company's One UI 6 interface. Previous reports also suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a powerful 50-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The company's existing flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, is equipped with a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. If the leaked details are accurate, this could mean Samsung's upcoming flagship phone could offer better images captured when zooming in on a subject. However, it is worth taking these leaked details with a pinch of salt as the South Korean tech conglomerate is yet to announce plans to launch the purported handset.
  12. Windows 11 has a change in testing which will please anyone who is fed up with Edge popping up when opening certain links in the OS, despite it not being the default browser – but there’s a catch, sadly. You’re surely familiar with the scenario where you open a link via a Windows system component – meaning in a Windows 11 menu somewhere, maybe a help link for example – and it fires up Edge, rather than your chosen favorite web browser. There’s no way to modify that preference either, but in preview build 23531 which was released at the end of last week in the Dev testing channel, Microsoft has changed it so these system components use your default browser, as they should. As the blog post for build 23531 makes clear: “In the European Economic Area (EEA), Windows system components use the default browser to open links.” And in that sentence, you can spot the catch: for now this is just in European countries (specifically the EEA), so it’s not happening in the US or elsewhere. Analysis: Come on Microsoft, push this out globally Hopefully this feature will witness a wider regional rollout in time – it’s a small tweak to make, and one that’ll definitely lower the annoyance factor when using Windows 11. Okay, so it isn’t that often that you click one of these system links, but when Edge pops up unannounced, it can be quite annoying. Especially as it inevitably also throws some kind of banner into the mix upon being opened for the first time in a while (“hey, don’t forget about me, make me your default browser, go on, you know you want to,” and so forth). Is there a reason Microsoft may have been forced to do this in Europe, pertaining to regulations or compliance issues? We’re not sure, but the chatter on the rumor mill seems convinced enough this is something Microsoft is only doing to head off the danger of being penalized by the EU in some way. It does seem strange that the change is Europe-only, after all. That said, if the feedback is positive enough, maybe the software giant will listen, and roll out this change more widely anyway, even if this somehow a forced move in Europe. Elsewhere in build 23531, Microsoft has reinstated the search flyout when you mouse over the search box in the taskbar – not something everyone will appreciate. The good news is that you can turn off this function if you find it irritating. As ever with test builds of Windows 11, there’s no guarantee that the features being tried out in earlier previews will make the cut for the final version of the OS.
  13. Huawei's compute GPU capabilities are now on par with Nvidia's A100 GPUs, Liu Qingfeng, founder and chairman of Chinese AI company iFlytek, said at the 19th Summer Summit of the 2023 Yabuli China Entrepreneurs Forum (via IT Home). Liu Qingfeng stated that Huawei has made significant strides in the GPU sector, achieving capabilities and performance comparable to Nvidia's A100 GPU. If true, this would be a remarkable accomplishment considering Nvidia's longstanding dominance in high-performance computing and AI. Liu also noted that three board members from Huawei are collaborating closely with iFlytek's special team, highlighting the strategic importance of this tech advancement for Huawei and the broader Chinese AI ecosystem. It is noteworthy that Huawei has never confirmed the development of its own compute GPUs, so iFlytek's comments are essentially the first confirmation that such a product exists. In fact, the company has Ascend 910 AI accelerators used for Huawei's Atlas 900 Pod A2 AI training cluster that Huawei has been using for its AI efforts for a while. Yet, the head of iFlytek specifically noted that he was talking about a compute GPU, which points to a new product. Liu noted that while AI algorithms developed in China are robust, computational capabilities of domestic hardware have traditionally lagged behind Nvidia. He cited the challenges that Chinese companies have faced in training large-scale AI models, something that is primarily done on Nvidia's hardware. Since access to Nvidia's hardware for Chinese companies is somewhat constrained because of the U.S. curbs against the country's supercomputer sector, any reliance on Nvidia's compute GPUs is a major limitation for Chinese AI companies. In addition, Liu revealed iFlytek's ambitious plans to launch a general-purpose AI model by October to compete with ChatGPT and eventually GPT-4 by the first half of 2024. Back in May, iFlytek officially launched a cognitive large-scale model featuring seven core abilities: text generation, language understanding, knowledge-based question-answering, logical reasoning, mathematical ability, code ability, and multi-modal capability. The model's milestones include planned breakthroughs in open-ended question answering and multi-modal interactions, making it a multifaceted tool in the AI landscape.

  19. A leaked Intel document has seemingly confirmed that users on Windows 10 and older operating systems won’t be able to enjoy Wi-Fi 7 when it launches next year. The document, posted on Twitter by leaker @g01d3nm4ng0, lists Windows 11, Linux, and ChromeOS as supported platforms for the new Wi-Fi standard. While it isn’t explicitly stated that Windows 10 won’t be supported, it’s not an unreasonable extrapolation to make. Wi-Fi 7 is expected to provide some seriously advanced data transmission techniques to offer speeds potentially close to five times faster than Wi-Fi 6, along with superior reliability, range, and power efficiency. Intel has been leading the charge to implement the new technology as early as 2024, so it’s unsurprising that’s where this leak originated from. That being said, it likely isn’t Intel’s fault that Windows 10 (and presumably older versions of Windows) won’t support the new Wi-Fi standard. Microsoft has had a hard time pushing Windows 11 to users, and this is just another factor the tech giant can point to and say ‘look, you’re missing out on this!’ The death knell of Windows 10 Let’s face it: we’re going to have to let go of Windows 10 eventually. With Windows 12 just peeking over the horizon, it was inevitable that some new features wouldn’t make the cut for our beloved 10. Still, it’s a shame to see Microsoft so aggressively pushing forward – especially when it’s arguably ahead of the curve when it comes to its operating system. Windows Copilot and the general slew of AI-powered updates for the OS show that Microsoft doesn’t even need version 12 to innovate in Windows, so why keep pushing ahead with major version releases like this? Frustrations have been fairly widespread with regard to Windows 11, hampering adoption in a big way despite Microsoft offering free upgrades for existing Windows users. Part of the problem is the strict hardware requirements for Win11, which entirely prevent some users from upgrading past Windows 10 (the TPM 2.0 requirement is a particular sticking point here). Early leaks have suggested that Windows 12 will also come with new minimum system requirements, locking out even more people on outdated builds. Still, if you can upgrade to Windows 11 and have simply been putting it off out of laziness or distrust of the new OS, now might be the time to start considering it. Wi-Fi 7 devices and routers aren’t available yet, but when they do arrive, you won’t want to find yourself stuck with slower wireless internet speeds just because you didn’t upgrade!
  20. In a recent discussion with The Verge, AMD's Chief Architect of Gaming, Frank Azor, affirmed that the company is not preventing Starfield from utilizing Nvidia's DLSS technology. Contrary to many people's opinions. Azor assured Starfield fans that AMD does not control what upscaling solutions Starfield utilizes, and if Bethesda wants to add DLSS in the future, AMD will give its full support. However, Bethesda has not announced plans to add DLSS support to Starfield, so there's no guarantee that DLSS will make it to the space RPG. Azor gave a possible explanation for Bethesda's prioritization of FSR2 over DLSS, stating the fact that FSR2 can run on all PC hardware and the Xbox Series X and S. He also admitted that AMD requests FSR (FSR2?) to be prioritized in a game if the company is paying a publisher to bundle their game with its own graphics cards. However, Azor clarified that AMD's requests are not demands for FSR2 to be implemented in sponsored games. (We should note that FSR and FSR2 are different beasts, and games that support FSR only would require more work to support DLSS — as well as FSR2. But FSR2, DLSS, and XeSS all use similar hooks, so if a game supports one it should be relatively easy to add support for the others.) It's good to hear that AMD is not preventing its gaming partners from incorporating Nvidia's competing DLSS upscaling technology into their games. Assumptions about AMD blocking DLSS started when enthusiasts and media outlets began actively tracing the number of AMD-sponsored games that support both FSR2 and DLSS and discovered that very few of the games actually support DLSS. This was backed up by the suspicious removal of DLSS and ray tracing in Boundary after the game's development studio, Skystone Games, became an AMD partner — the DLSS support already existed, so why remove it? Unfortunately, The Verge failed to get an official statement from Bethesda to see if Starfield might receive DLSS integration in the future. It wouldn't be surprising if Bethesda is prioritizing FSR2 due to the reasons Azor suggested, since AMD's FSR2 technology does indeed work on different hardware configurations and doesn't require dedicated hardware to function like Nvidia's competing tech. At the same time, Bethesda could wait to implement DLSS and even XeSS later, once the game is launched and development resources are freed up. But if you're really desperate for DLSS, DLSS modder PureDark has promised he'll have a Starfield DLSS mod ready when the game launches. He's done the same for several recent AMD promoted games that only had FSR2 support, which tells you a lot about how easy it is to add DLSS support to a game that already has FSR2 support. At least there will be ways to get DLSS working in Starfield unofficially.
