  14. The Mazda6 Diesel Is Finally Certified For America, Just in Time for the End of Production in Europe Oh, Dieselgate--still making waves in the auto industry some five years after Volkswagen's emissions scandal was brought to light. Various other automakers have since been found-out for their questionable practices and, all the while, the po[CENSORED]rity of diesel cars has tumbled immensely in the United States. Still, that hasn't stopped Mazda from trying to certify compression-ignition models to the American market. It finally succeeded with the 2019 CX-5, only for the option to disappear in 2020. Meanwhile, the long-promised Mazda6 diesel sedan is still MIA in the States, and a new bulletin from Autocar suggests it might never get here. Citing a Mazda UK spokesperson, Autocar reported on Friday that Mazda will be ending production of the diesel 6 for the European market. Since the sedan is built at the same plants in Japan for both Europe and the U.S., and the powertrain always made more business sense in Europe regardless, this naturally raises the question of whether Mazda is ending its American diesel experiment entirely. However, just hours after the Autocar story was published, Mazda had a surprising answer when asked just that by Carscoops: the 2020 MY Mazda6 diesel with its Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter turbo engine has officially been certified for the U.S. market. We knew earlier this year that it had been approved by the all-important California Air Resources Board, but now Mazda seems to be suggesting EPA approval, saying it's "worked closely with all proper federal and state agencies… to ensure that the Skyactiv-D 2.2 engine meets the required emission standards and passes all appropriate regulations." Huh. Interesting timing. As for whether it'll actually go on sale in the waning months of 2020, and what'll happen in 2021, Mazda hedged and promised "more information in the future." An annual Mazda announcement that it is definitely, really bringing diesels to the U.S. is pretty much tradition now, even after so-called "clean" technologies were generally disgraced in 2016. Honestly, it seems likely the diesel 6 is dead on arrival here. With sedans continuing to lose market share and the industry at large still on shaky ground, it's exactly the wrong time for a niche product like this. Plus, winding down Mazda's diesel programs would fit with its Saudi Aramco partnership to develop new, lower carbon fuels. As for EVs, Mazda's been weirdly resistant to electrification until this year, when it at last announced the electric MX-30 crossover with the addition of a range-extending rotary engine this month.

  15. ASTROLOGY VS ASTRONOMY: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Though the practices of astrology and astronomy have common roots, there is an important distinction in astrology vs astronomy today. Astronomy is the study of the universe and its contents outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomers examine the positions, motions, and properties of celestial objects. Astrology attempts to study how those positions, motions, and properties affect people and events on Earth. For several millennia, the desire to improve astrological predictions was one of the main motivations for astronomical observations and theories. Astrology continued to be part of mainstream science until the late 1600s, when Isaac Newton demonstrated some of the physical processes by which celestial bodies affect each other. In doing so, he showed that the same laws that make, say, an apple fall from a tree, also apply to the motions of the celestial sphere. Since then, astronomy has evolved into a completely separate field, where predictions about celestial phenomena are made and tested using the scientific method. In contrast, astrology is now regarded as a pastime and a pseudoscience — though thousands of people around the world still invoke advice from astrologers and astrology publications in making important professional, medical, and personal experiences. (This, despite the fact that current horoscopes rely on outdated information!) Why Astrology "Works" Yet there's a reason people continue to rely on horoscopes, and Senior Editor Alan MacRobert explains in Sky & Telescope's Focal Point column just why astrology is still so po[CENSORED]r. Read an excerpt here: Planets have nothing to do with it. But that's not the point. If you want to get through to your believing sister-in-law or your uncle in Cincinatti, the way to do it is not to argue physics or astronomy, but to explain why astrology works. I tell this with my own story. When I was in elementary school, I practiced a form of divination that you could call bazookamancy. Back then, Bazooka Joe bubble gum was po[CENSORED]r. It came wrapped in a little comic strip about Bazooka Joe and his gang. The wrappers were on the ground wherever kids littered. As everyone knew, when you saw one, you stopped and asked it a question. Then you picked it up and read it. The comic was a parable that answered your question. Often you had to look mighty hard to find your answer. But if you looked hard enough, it was always there. . . . I've described my practice of bazookamancy to two of my astrologer friends. Each of them lit up and say, "You've got it!" So at some level, they know it isn't about the planets, not if one form of divination is as good as another. Any reading or fluke or chance — any metaphor looking for its referent — will serve your uncle in Cincinnati just as well.

  16. Heavy rain likely in Odisha in next few days, fishermen asked not to venture into sea BHUBANESWAR : Fishermen along the Odisha coast have been asked not to venture into deep sea for the next few days as the weatherman on Sunday forecast squally weather conditions with wind speed likely reaching 45-55 kmph in south Odisha, officials said. A low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is likely to trigger heavy rainfall in several parts of the state till Wednesday, Meteorological Centre Director H R Biswas said. It is likely to intensify into a deep depression and cross the north Andhra Pradesh coast between Narsapur and Visakhapatnam on Monday night, he said. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena has asked all district officials to be prepared to deal with any exigency, particularly water-logging in low-lying areas and landslides in hilly regions. With this, nine low-pressure systems have been formed over the Bay of Bengal since August and another is likely to take shape over north Andaman and Nicobar Islands around October 14, the MeT Centre here said. Heavy rain is likely in some parts of Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam districts till Monday, it said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some places in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Cuttack districts on Monday and Tuesday, the MeT Centre said. Heavy rain may occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Rayagada and Ganjam districts on Tuesday and Wednesday, it added.

  17. Halo Infinite Reveals First Look At Multiplayer Armor Skin Here's our first peek at what the Spartans will look like in Halo Infinite multiplayer. Halo Infinite is due to launch on Xbox Series X, S, PC, and Xbox One in 2021, but so far we haven't seen anything from the game's multiplayer. We know that it will be free to play and run at 120FPS, but so far 343 Industries has not shown footage or revealed any of the modes we can expect. However, we've now had a glimpse at an armor render from the upcoming game. In the latest Halo Waypoint update, 343 Industries has revealed a new render for an armor coating in Halo Infinite. This is the Mark VII Mjolnir armor, and while it could change before release, this is how it looks right now at this stage of development. In its current form, it looks like a brand-new suit--perhaps the final version will feature some scuffs. Here's a first look at one of the Spartans you're probably going to kill (or be killed by) at some point online. We've seen concept art for some new character designs for Infinite, but this is the first proper render of a multiplayer character we've seen. Halo Infinite was originally expected to release this holiday as a launch title for the Xbox Series X, but, due in part to complications related to COVID-19 and working from home, Microsoft shifted the release date to 2021. Despite what you might have read on the internet, Halo Infinite is not abandoning Xbox One or getting delayed again to 2022.

  18. Microsoft cloud issues continue with more global outages Problems persist for users of Microsoft 365 services and Azure Microsoft’s cloud computing services are continuing to experience issues after outages resurfaced this week. A serious Azure Active Directory authentication issue emerged last week, followed by an Exchange/Outlook problem that affected Office 365 customers in Europe and India. Now, Exchange, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint users are experiencing difficulties. Although Microsoft began this week by warning users that residual issues should be expected, the extent of the problems saw a number of angry tweets sent in the direction of the Redmond-based company nonetheless. The most recent disruptions seem to be primarily affecting US users, with some individuals noting that they are struggling to access their admin centre dashboards. There were also reports that a number of Microsoft 365 services, as well as Azure Active Directory and Azure Networking services, were experiencing issues. Cloud computing vs. edge computing Microsoft is taking its Azure cloud into space Here's the best cloud hosting options around Cloudy skies The multitude of issues means that it is difficult to pinpoint a single cause for the disruptions. Speculation initially centred on a DevOps issue, while a configuration change was blamed for some of the early Azure outages. The Microsoft 365 team, meanwhile, has attempted to reassure users that its problems are being resolved. “Our investigation determined that a network infrastructure change resulted in accessibility issues," the Microsoft 365 Status Twitter account posted. “Our telemetry indicates that service is recovering following the reversion.” Affected users reported being unable to access their email accounts and other essential productivity apps. With more and more companies relying on a remote workforce, cloud solutions have never been more important than they are today. The sort of disruptions recently experienced by Microsoft’s cloud solutions could prove to be extremely costly for the company, particularly at a time when the cloud computing market is so competitive.
