  1. "2000 mules," a new documentary from a right-wing filmmaker with a history of spreading false claims, promises to give evidence to millions of Americans who believe something went wrong in the 2020 election. The trailer for Dinesh D’Souza’s movie resembles a sci-fi flick, set to dramatic horror movie music with grainy video footage of what appears to be people dropping off ballots at ballot drop boxes. The trailer suggests a nefarious conspiracy in which so-called "mules" – people it defines as collecting and returning completed mail ballots – submitted ballots en masse. The movie’s allegations are based on surveillance footage of ballot drop boxes and cell phone tracking data. Now more than ever, it’s important to sort fact from fiction. Please donate to support our mission. "This is organized crime," the trailer states, adding, "Bold accusations require bold evidence." But experts on mail voting who viewed the trailer said it can’t support the allegations. "If there is credible evidence, where is it?" said Kenneth Mayer, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "This is not it." The trailer has been widely shared on social media and promoted by former President Donald Trump. The full movie was slated to air in theaters during the first week in May. Dinesh D’Souza’s poor record with the truth D’Souza is a far-right commentator, author and documentary filmmaker whose provocation and incendiary rhetoric traces back to his time at Dartmouth College. There, a conservative publication under his leadership published an interview with a former Ku Klux Klan member and publicly outed members of the college’s Gay Student Alliance. LINK
  2. German-based food tech company Bluu Seafood has revealed Europe’s first market-ready products made from cultivated fish cells. Bluu Seafood’s fish fingers and fish balls contain cultivated fish cells as the main ingredient and have been enriched with plant proteins to optimize cooking behavior and texture. They will soon enter the regulatory approval process across global markets. "With the completion of our first products, we can demonstrate visible and edible results after less than two years of being operational,” said Bluu Seafood’s founder and CEO, Dr Sebastian Rakers. “This officially makes us the first company in Europe to produce cultivated fish. We are now working closely with regulatory authorities to clear the way for market launch and focus on scaling." By combining cell and food technology, Bluu Seafood is striving to offer a solution to the animal cruelty and growing ocean devastation caused by industrial fishing and farming. To create its cultivated products, Bluu Seafood started with a “one-time” fish biopsy that did not harm or take the life of the animal. It then developed full fish cell lines in a lab-setting using bioreactors. This technology also removes the need for additional cell samples, providing real fish meat without farming, catching, or killing animals. "That is the amazing thing about 'immortalized' cells - while 'normal' cells double for, let's say, 20 times and then stop, the immortalized cells keep on doubling - theoretically forever," Bluu co-founder Simon Fabich told TechCrunch. Bluu Seafood targets initial approval and market launch in Singapore by the end of 2023, as the regulatory process there is already well-defined. The company will also apply for approval in the US, the UK, and the EU. In addition to fish balls and fish fingers, Bluu Seafood has also developed first prototypes of complex products such as fillets and sashimi. These are made using animal serum-free growth media and are based on proprietary, non-GMO trout and salmon cell lines. “From a product perspective, the structure of fish meat is easier to achieve than the more complex mammalian meat structure — think salmon fillet versus steak,” explained Fabich. “We are working in parallel on more complex products such as fish fillet and sashimi, of which prototypes already exist,” said Fabich. “But those are without a doubt harder to scale, and it will take more time to achieve price parity with the conventional product.” LINK
  3. A test mule for Lamborghini's upcoming Safari-style Huracán Sterrato has been spotted for the first time leaving the company's Sant'Agata factory in Italy. The high-riding prototype, spotted by Varryx on YouTube, gives us our first real look at the factory-safari'd supercar outside of the promotional material released by Lamborghini so far. In addition to the taller ride height, we can also see tweaked fascias, a roof scoop, and a couple of roof racks. Though it's tough to tell from the exhaust sound captured in this clip, it's very likely the Sterrato will use a version of the Huracán's long-standing 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V-10 engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Whether it will have rear- or all-wheel drive has yet to be confirmed. The Huaracán Sterrato started off as a concept vehicle shown in 2019 before being greenlit for production, presumably thanks to the positive reaction and press generated by the car. Lamborghini released a short video in January showing a camouflaged prototype—likely the same car you see here today, drifting and sliding on dirt to drum up hype. Lamborghini is expected to show the production Huracán Sterrato in December. To celebrate 30 years of the Grand Cherokee, Jeep brought a new Anniversary edition to the Detroit auto show this year, complete with dark badging, 20-inch wheels, and ventilated black leather seats. The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe is the new entry-level Wrangler, and it has all of the blue and "authentic retro cues" you would expect from a plug-in-hybrid powertrain in a old-school Willys Jeep. Also, there was a huge duck. Jeep celebrated an anniversary, more Willys from the past, and the appearance of a six-story-tall inflatable duck at the Detroit auto show this year. The world's largest duck was on hand to attract social media attention, but the two new vehicle editions are the real draw here. LINK
  4. Sleep plays a vital role in the healthy functioning of our body and, therefore, lack of it can result in several health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, impaired cognitive ability, and mental health disorders, among others. But, did you know that sleep also has a direct link to weight loss? “Numerous studies have suggested that restricted sleep and poor sleep quality may lead to metabolic disorders, weight gain, and an increased risk of obesity and other chronic health conditions,” according to sleepfoundation.org. A 2022 study, presented at European Congress on Obesity (ECO), highlighted that not getting enough good quality sleep undermines people’s attempts to keep weight off after dieting, and argues that about two hours of robust physical activity per week can help support better sleep. “Adults who aren’t sleeping enough or getting poor quality sleep after weight loss appear less successful at maintaining weight loss than those with sufficient sleep.” Dr Signe Torekov, the study lead, told Medical News Today. Agreeing, Dr Jugendra Singh, Senior Consultant – Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Medanta Lucknow said that lack of energy and sleepiness or fatigue are often combatted by caffeine and sugar, leading to weight gain and less exercise. But, why does that happen? As per physiological studies, the two hormones – ghrelin and leptin – are to be blamed. “Ghrelin is the hormone that tells you when to eat, and when you are sleep deprived, you have more ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that tells you to stop eating, and when you are sleep deprived, you have less leptin,” he explained. As such, sleeping for inadequate hours tend to increase hunger in adults, particularly for calorie-dense foods, which are high in carbohydrates, according to Dr Navneet Sood, Senior consultant and clinical lead, Pulmonary, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. “Another effect could be that sleep deprivation produces fatigue, which leads to decreased physical activity that directly affects weight gain and loss,” he added. Cortisol or the stress hormone is another responsible factor behind weight gain due to sleep deprivation. Explaining, Dr Sood said, “Cortisol is responsible for our body’s natural ability to get up in the morning and fall asleep at night. It is at its highest just before waking up and gradually decreases during the day until it reaches its lowest at night (indicating to the body that it is time to sleep). Cortisol levels do not fall as they should during the day when we do not get adequate sleep. When our cortisol levels are elevated for an extended time, our bodies are signalled to store fat and use muscle for energy.” LINK
  5. Queen Elizabeth’s coffin came to its final resting place at Windsor on Monday. This completed its long journey from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh, then from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey, and then finally to St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their final respects to the Queen, after her funeral earlier in the day. After the pomp and pageantry of the state funeral at Westminster, attended by leaders from across the globe, a more intimate committal service was held at St. George’s. Ad Feedback At the service’s conclusion, the Queen’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault – the resting place of many past monarchs. Below the chapel lie King George III, IV and V, William IV and others. Last year Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband, was also laid to rest there. Pipe Major Paul Burns of the Royal Regiment of Scotland helps to close Queen Elizabeth II state funeral. The piper who woke the Queen up every morning plays her to rest Before that King Charles stepped forward to place the Queen’s Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier Guards on the late monarch’s coffin. Then, the Lord Chamberlain, who is the most senior office in the Royal Household, broke his Wand of Office and placed it atop the coffin. The ceremonial breaking of the thin staff is to create symmetry with the three Instruments of State that have been removed, according to Buckingham Palace. While the Queen’s coffin was being lowered into the vault, the Dean of Windsor said a Psalm, before the Garter King of the Arms pronounced the styles and titles of the Queen. This concluded the public ceremonies devoted to her. However, the vault was not her final resting place. Later on Monday evening, a private burial service was due to be held for the royal family, when the Queen is to be relocated to the King George VI Memorial Chapel. Here the Queen’s coffin will join those of her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The coffin of Prince Philip will also be relocated, so that the Queen can be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband of 73 years. Although it is closed for Monday’s private ceremony, ordinarily the Chapel is open to the public, meaning Britons can visit the Queen’s final resting place to pay their respects. 18. LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - From an all-black opening look to models holding a picture of Queen Elizabeth, London Fashion Week began with tributes to the late monarch as fashionistas paid their respects during the period of national mourning. Organisers announced last week that London Fashion Week would go ahead as a "business-to-business event" while observing royal protocol and holding tributes for the 96-year-old queen who died on Sept. 8. Parties have been postponed and Monday's shows, the day of the queen's state funeral, have been rescheduled. While bigger brands such as Burberry and Raf Simons, among the most-anticipated highlights this season, pulled out of the Sept 16-20 event, for smaller labels doing so is tricker. "So the shows and presentations, which is the business to business part, where the designers show their collections to international media, retailers, stylists... (is) part of a global fashion calendar. It can't be moved," Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, told Reuters. "London is a platform for incredible creative businesses, many independent businesses and they've already committed spend. So we need to make sure that we're supporting them to be able to continue." Among the tributes planned is a book of condolences from the fashion industry, which once saw Elizabeth sitting front row at a London show, and fashionistas will join in a national moment of reflection - a one minute silence - on Sunday evening at 8pm (1900 GMT) ahead of the Christopher Kane show. On Thursday evening, designer Daniel W. Fletcher held a minute's silence before sending out his first model in a black suit and a black armband. "I thought as we are opening the event it was important to mark that moment," Fletcher told London newspaper the Evening Standard. Spanish sustainable brand Sohuman ended its Friday show with models, their eye makeup smeared as if crying, holding a picture of Elizabeth and with drawings of the crown or "RIP" written on their hands. Designer Javier Aparici's colourful collection consisted of dresses in bold shades or with floral prints. "After the pandemic, the situation around the world is very complicated," he told Reuters. "And we think it is important to empower woman with a lot colours flowers, attitude, energy." Turkish designer Bora Aksu also held a minute's silence ahead of his show, where he presented his usual array of frilly feminine dresses, as well as military-style jackets and hats. LINK
  19. technicallyLoading times on Google Chrome will soon be much faster with the release of a new feature known as “Freeze Dried Tabs”, which stores tabs as “interactive snapshots”. In a post on the Chromium blog(opens in new tab), Google claims that the new feature provides a “20% perceptible speedup” in cold startups of the browser on Android devices. The new feature improves upon the previous method of displaying unloaded pages (via screenshots) by allowing users to click links and scroll across the entire length of pages before they are fully loaded. So-called “freeze drying” works by storing a page’s visuals as vector graphics, rasterizing them, and displaying them “dynamically as the user scrolls” alongside captured hyperlinks. Large images are left out of these new tabs, and unused lettering in font files, which can be as large as several megabytes, are removed in order to reduce page loading times. In testing, Google found that Freeze Dried Tabs can “speed up the median time taken to draw all the content of the page to just 2.8s from launch”. READ MORE > Check out our picks of the best anonymous browsers right now > Google Chrome not working? Microsoft Defender may be to blame > China is cracking down on mobile web browsers Google believes that the new technique used to load tabs will be especially useful for “transitional views” and for pages with particularly large pieces of content that would otherwise take a long time to load. It claims that the layout of Freeze Dried Tabs and fully loaded pages being the same means that Google Chrome will seem even faster from now on, due to the transition from snapshot to full page being a barely perceptible change. While Freeze Dried Tabs only appear in Google Chrome for Android at the moment, the company is “exploring additional places where this technology might be used”.
