  1. Don Bolduc, who put election denialism at the center of his campaign, defeated establishment favorite Chuck Morse in New Hampshire’s GOP Senate primary, the latest in a series of blows to Republicans’ hopes of winning back the majority in the chamber this fall. Bolduc now joins the likes of Herschel Walker in Georgia, J.D. Vance in Ohio, Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Blake Masters in Arizona as Republican candidates who ran – and won – primary campaigns by aligning themselves with the coalition built by former President Donald Trump but who appear to have much work to do when it comes to courting a general election audience. (Sidebar: Trump did not endorse Bolduc – or any other candidate – in the New Hampshire primary.) Throughout the campaign, Bolduc embraced a series of controversial positions – most notably, contra facts, that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. “I signed a letter with 120 other generals and admirals saying Trump won the election, and damn it, I stand by [it],” the retired Army brigadier general said at an August debate. He has also called for the repeal of the 17th Amendment, which allows voters to directly elect their senators. After the FBI executed a search warrant on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, Bolduc questioned whether the agency was needed. Those positions caused enough worry about Bolduc’s viability in a general election that po[CENSORED]r New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who had stunned the political world by deciding not to run against Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan himself, endorsed Morse. “The Republican candidate who Maggie Hassan is most afraid to face in this election is small-business owner and Senate President Chuck Morse,” Sununu wrote in an op-ed in the New Hampshire Union Leader over the weekend. Sununu was more blunt about Bolduc and his general election prospects last month. “He’s not a serious candidate, he’s really not,” Sununu said in a radio interview. “If he were the nominee, I have no doubt we would have a much harder time trying to win that seat back. So I don’t take him seriously as a candidate. I don’t think most people do.” Sununu also referred to Bolduc as part of a passel of “conspiracy-theory extremists” running for Republican Senate nominations around the country. (For his part, Bolduc had previously taken credit for keeping Sununu out of the Senate race.) Sununu wasn’t the only establishment figure who was decidedly leery about the prospect of Bolduc as the GOP nominee. A group with links to a super PAC aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spent more than $4 million on ads in the final stretch of the race in an attempt to keep Bolduc from winning. For Republicans, the declining competitiveness of New Hampshire mirrors the broader struggles they’ve had in Senate races this cycle. The seat was widely seen at the start of 2022 cycle as one of Republicans’ top pickup opportunities – as Hassan’s poll numbers were middling and Sununu was viewed as a likely candidate. Then last November, Sununu surprisingly decided not to enter the race, announcing that he would instead seek another term as governor. LINK

  13. Computing performance for Linux VMs running the latest kernel update could have seen a decrease of up to 70%, new figures have found. Recent research by VMWare performance engineering staffer Manikandan Jagatheesan found running virtual machines with the Linux distro on the ESXi hypervisor, using the latest kernel update version 5.19, could see computing power reduce by more than two-thirds when using a single vCPU. Further ripple effects were also found in networking, with a loss of almost one-third, and storage performance, which saw up to a decrease of around one in ten. Linux 5.19 performance The findings were posted to the Linux Kernel Mailing List(opens in new tab) on September 9 under a post entitled “Performance Regression in Linux Kernel 5.19”. “As part of VMware's performance regression testing for Linux Kernel upstream releases, we have evaluated the performance of Linux kernel 5.19 against the 5.18 release and we have noticed performance regressions in Linux VMs on ESXi as shown below. - Compute(up to -70%) - Networking(up to -30%) - Storage(up to -13%)” > The best servers for small businesses(opens in new tab) > Linux 6.0 is here - here's all you need to know(opens in new tab) > Linux systems are being hit with more ransomware than ever(opens in new tab) According to the analysis, the test were run on Intel Skylake CPUs, which The Register(opens in new tab) says many businesses are continuing to use today, despite being released between 2015 and 2017. Jagatheesan said that VMWare’s testers had disabled Retbleed in version 5.19, which saw ESXi performance return to previous 5.18 levels. While companies can decide to follow this method to restore previous levels of performance, should they decide that the risk of deactivating Retbleed is too high, they will suffer up to a 70% reduction in performance, which could be unacceptable if not catastrophic for many business operations. Linux creator Linus Torvalds has not commented on Jagatheesan’s post, which suggests that he does not appear too concerned about the news. This could be because progress for version 6.0 is well underway, with release candidate five available. 14. Robert Hallock, AMD's director of technical marketing, is departing the company after 12 years, he announced on LinkedIn(opens in new tab). Hallock was a public-facing figure at the company, working with the AMD fan community on Reddit, Discord, YouTube and other platforms while also briefing the press. "Over the years, I've had the honor and privilege of publicly teaching others about some truly stellar innovation: the Zen core family, 3D V-Cache, chiplet packaging, HBM memory, FreeSync, low-overhead graphics APIs, and much more," Hallock wrote in his post. "After working in both graphics and processors for roughly 6 years each, I've learned so much." Hallock hasn't detailed where he'll be going next. On LinkedIn, he wrote that he would be traveling while he thinks about his next move. Hallock is one of several high-profile employees at AMD to leave in recent years. In 2017, then Radeon chief Raja Koduri left AMD and now heads up the graphics group at Intel, including Arc. In 2018, Chris Hook, then senior director of global product marketing, left after 17 years from a career that started at ATI. That's the same year that Jim Anderson, the general manager and senior vice president of the computing and graphics group, left. (Anderson now serves as president and CEO of Lattice Semiconductor.) In 2019, another public-facing communications employee announced his departure with a tweet. It's unclear who will take Hallock's place at AMD. AMD didn't respond to a request for comment before publication, but we'll update if we hear back. He's leaving just before the launch of AMD's Ryzen 7000 desktop processors powered by the 5 nm Zen 4 architecture. Those chips will launch on September 27, so if AMD wants a public face to explain what PC builders will get out of those chips, it will have to find someone to fill his shoes fast. LINK
  15. The Division Resurgence is a new mobile game based in the universe of The Division coming soon to iOS and Android devices. Like its console and PC counterparts, it will be a co-op third-person-shooter RPG with a separate story that will be canonical to the larger universe. Alongside the new story, the mobile game also features different classes, new gear and weapons, and new characters. Resurgence takes place in New York City and according to the press release will offer "a unique perspective on key story events that have taken place in The Division and The Division 2" with players taking on the role of first-wave agents. The original Division takes place in Manhattan while the sequel takes place in Washington DC. Ubisoft is referring to the game as open-world and says players will be able to roam freely around the urban environment and will feature both story missions and world activities for cooperative agents to complete. Ubisoft says the game can also be played alone. Similar to the console and PC games, players will be able to customize and upgrade their Division agent. You will also be able to unlock specializations with unique signature weapons and gadgets that can be changed any time with the goal of letting players develop good cooperative synergies. Ubisoft does not yet have a release date for The Division Resurgence, but you can opt to participate in upcoming tests (the press release for the game poitedly does not call it a beta) for the game by visiting the official website. GameSpot gave the original game an 8/10 in its The Division review. In its The Division 2 review, GameSpot gave the sequel a 9/10. Email news@gamespot.com The Division has become one of Ubisoft's flagship franchises with its open-world exploration and explosive combat. During GameSpot Swipe, we spoke to Fabrice Navrez, executive producer on the franchise's mobile debut The Division Resurgence, about how the game will bring the same Division experience to your pocket. The Division Resurgence will tell two stories: It will open with a scene set before the events of the first game, but then transition to its main storyline, which sits between the first and second games on the timeline. Players will return to New York City--the setting for the first game--including iconic locales like Liberty Island and Times Square. "One of the objectives was to come back to the vibe of The Division One that was very strong and loved by the community," Navrez said in the interview. "It's always a great experience to get familiar things you wish to explore, seen through the lens of the game." The game recently completed its first closed alpha test, and Navrez says the most positive feedback received thus far has dealt with the "true MMO" aspects, including the ability to meet players out in the streets of New York as opposed to only in safe zones, resulting in what Navrez called "interesting encounters." The video also details two of the six classes available in the closed alpha: the Demolitionist, who carries a heavy gun that inflicts explosive area-of-effect damage, and the Bulwark, which is a "tank melee" class designed to draw enemy fire and deal massive damage up-close. The Division Resurgence will release on iOS and Android at launch, though a specific timeframe has not yet been announced. More information will be provided during the Ubisoft Forward presentation on September 10 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET. LINK
  16. High-speed drones whizz along an avalanche's deadly wall of tumbling snow, rare Siberian tigers hunt hibernating prey, and microscopes capture ice breaking. More than a decade on from the first series, Frozen Planet II returns, using new technology to give BBC viewers an unprecedented insight into life in the coldest parts of our planet, many of which are under huge threat from climate change. It took the BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) four and a half years of filming across 18 different countries to produce the six-part series. The result, Sir David Attenborough reveals in the opening sequence, captures "natural phenomena never before seen by humans". The success of the series in revealing new animal behaviour has already led to one scientific publication on the Lapland bumble bee - with more expected to follow. From episode one, viewers will see an endangered Siberian tiger (also known as the Amur tiger) prowling for potential sources of food sleeping out the winter in caves - the first time this activity has been filmed. They are so elusive - with fewer than 550 left in the world - it took three years to get them on camera. The benefit of waiting 11 years for a new series is that camera technology has moved on considerably. Microscopes were used to film ice cracking below baby emperor penguins' feet as they made the treacherous journey to the sea. Motion-triggered time lapse cameras were set to catch a tiger on the move. The NHU even partnered with space-imaging experts to document the great ice melt on a global scale. Perhaps most impressive is the first ever use by the NHU of a new generation of light-weight fast-response drones. This enabled the team to capture the terrifying first-hand experience of flying down the mountainside alongside an avalanche. These drones were also used to document a mammoth ice calving in Greenland - a fast and difficult to predict event. For more than four weeks the team watched on rotation for 24 hours a day, ready to send the drones nearly a mile across the ocean to reach the vast Store Glacier. The resulting clips immerse the viewer in towering blocks of ice, some 100ft (30m) high, as they break away from the glacier. Mark Brownlow, executive producer of the series, points out that Frozen Planet II is not just about capturing nice footage but also "draws attention to changes going on now". Greenland and Antarctica are currently losing ice six times faster than 30 years ago, and Greenland's ice sheet has been shrinking continuously for the last 25 years due to climate change, according to the UN. 17. As the state’s top law enforcement agency faces increased scrutiny over its role in the botched police response to the mass school shooting in Uvalde in May, agency director Steve McCraw told USA Today he wishes state troopers had seized control of the operation. McCraw, who sat down with the news outlet for an extended interview that was published Sunday, has largely blamed local police for failing to act promptly to stop the shooter. The Texas Department of Public Safety director has previously told lawmakers that he did not think it was feasible for troopers to have assumed command, but when asked by USA Today why his agency didn’t take over the reins of the police response, McCraw said, “I wish we would have.” Law enforcement waited more than an hour to confront the gunman who killed 21 people at Robb Elementary School on May 24, contrary to active-shooter training that teaches officers to take down a shooter as soon as possible. Of the 376 officers who descended upon the school, 91 were state police. The state agency has taken a lead role in previous tragedies, including the 2013 fertilizer plant explosion in West and the 2018 shooting at Santa Fe High School. On Tuesday, DPS announced it would formally investigate five troopers for their conduct during the shooting and said two of them were suspended with pay. DPS told USA Today on Friday that two more officers were under investigation. Two of the seven troopers being investigated are command staff, the news outlet reported. McCraw also gave more details about DPS’ actions the day of the shooting. When McCraw learned about the shooting, he said he ordered Victor Escalon, the DPS regional director for South Texas, to head to the scene. McCraw has previously declined to answer how he communicated with Escalon, whose chaotic press conference two days after the shooting first raised questions about the conflicting information officials had shared about the law enforcement response. McCraw has recently asserted that Escalon is not going to be fired and that Escalon’s actions that day were appropriate. In addition, McCraw told USA Today the agency’s first captain wasn’t on scene until 12:25 p.m., about an hour into the standoff. But records reviewed by the Tribune show a DPS special agent arrived around 20 minutes after the shooting started. In the aftermath of the shooting, McCraw has deflected blame for the unorganized and delayed police response to Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde schools police chief who was fired last month. McCraw said during a Senate testimony in June that Arredondo was the only obstacle between armed police and the 18-year-old shooter. But McCraw recently told CNN he’ll resign if inquiries into the shooting conclude that troopers had “any culpability” in the delayed response. In an internal email to DPS employees in June, McCraw said every responding agency shared responsibility in the failures during the shooting. DPS training would be updated to provide proper guidance to recognize and overcome poor leadership decisions during active-shooter emergencies, the email said. The internal DPS email came after a Texas House committee report criticized law enforcement agencies, including DPS, for not offering Arredondo assistance with incident command. In the minutes from a state police captains meeting in mid-August, McCraw is quoted as saying “no one is going to lose their jobs” based on the response to the shooting, and that all the leaders in the region “did what they were supposed to do and have stepped up to meet the moment.” McCraw recently told CNN he was misquoted and that his comments were referring only to Escalon, the DPS regional director. This article originally appeared in The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan media organization that informs Texans — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues.
