  1. A spokesperson for the public works department in the city of Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco, said it is doing what it can to deal with the fish deaths and algal bloom, but could not speculate on the root cause of the phenomenon. Rotting carcasses of striped bass, bat rays and other fish have been washing up on the shores of the San Francisco Bay Area in recent days, after a toxic algae bloom spread across the area. The toxic bloom began in July and has stretched as far north as San Pablo Bay, roughly 20 miles north of San Francisco, to as far south as the coastlines of San Mateo County, said environmental advocacy organization San Francisco Baykeeper. It identified the culprit behind the murky brown waters as a species of algae called Heterosigma akashiwo. “This bloom’s been going on for over a month and it’s covering San Francisco Bay, so the scope and the duration of this bloom is unprecedented,” Jon Rosenfield, a Baykeeper senior scientist, told Reuters. He blamed the bloom on treated wastewater containing nitrogen and phosphorous dumped into the bay by about 40 wastewater treatment centers. A spokesperson for the public works department in the city of Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco, said it is doing what it can to deal with the fish deaths and algal bloom, but could not speculate on the root cause of the phenomenon. Workers on Wednesday donned hazmat suits with N95 masks, gloves and boots and climbed into the mud of Lake Merritt’s shores, braving the pungent stench to collect rotting carcasses of fish and other wildlife floating in the water or resting on the mud. “It’s kind of my second home, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Oakland resident Sara Moss, 27, who frequently comes to Lake Merritt. “It’s insane how many dead fish there are, all sizes too. 2. Germany will charter a fifth floating liquefied natural gas terminal as the country looks to become independent of Russian gas imports and secure supplies for future winters, the country's economic ministry announced Thursday. The terminal for the import of LNG will be installed in Wilhelmshaven, a port city in northwestern Germany. It will have a capacity of 5 billion cubic meters per year and will be operated by a consortium made up of energy companies EON, Engie and Tree Energy Solutions, according to the ministry. It is scheduled to become fully operational at the end of 2023. Germany has been under pressure from Ukraine and other nations in Europe reduce its reliance on Russian energy supplies since the start of the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. "All the steps we take to free ourselves as quickly as possible from the clutches of Russian imports are more necessary than ever," Germany's Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck told reporters on Thursday. "It is astonishing that we have reduced the dependence on Russian gas so quickly with the development of new infrastructure, compared to the decades it took to become dependent on Russia," Habeck continued, adding that Germany should not rely on gas being delivered through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline from Russia over the coming winter. For future winters, the newly chartered floating unit is expected fill the gap left by Russian gas imports, which covered 55% of Germany's demand before the invasion of Ukraine. The five government-chartered terminals have a total capacity of 25 billion cubic meters per year, with the first set to begin pumping gas around the end of 2022. Some background: Russian state energy giant Gazprom cut all deliveries through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Wednesday in what it said was a planned shutdown until Saturday for maintenance work. In recent months, Gazprom has slashed flows through Nord Stream 1 to just 20% of capacity, citing maintenance issues and blaming Western sanctions on exports of technology imposed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 5. Heritage: Inflation Reduction Act Will “Devastate Economy” A shocking turn of events unfolded in the last month. A tax and spending bill negotiated by Senators Chuck Schumber and Joe Manchin quickly came together and was passed by the Senate with no Republicans supporting the bill. The House is expected to pass the legislation soon. This marks a far departure from the Democrats inability to coalesce around a bill in the last year. The Heritage Foundation has unpacked the legislation and contends the bill will do nothing for the American economy it claims it will. “The climate provisions, which are pulled from the failed Green New Deal, would spend a staggering $369 billion on so-called green provisions, the largest expense in the bill. Another provision would spend $64 billion on extending COVID-19-era Obamacare subsidies, temporarily shielding Obamacare enrollees from the real cost of rising premiums. Pumping new spending into the economy is what got us record inflation in the first place. One of the bill’s most egregious tax credits is a good case study: a new $7,500 credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle with a price tag of up to $80,000 for taxpayers making up to $300,000 per year. This will squeeze the already strained supply chain and raise car prices further, making inflation worse. The winners? EV owners, who are overwhelmingly wealthy , and EV manufacturers. The losers? Everyone else in America who is paying higher prices and higher taxes to cover the bill.” The massive spending in the bill is claimed to be offset by new and higher taxes as well as more IRS enforcement. Tax provisions in the bill include: First, the largest tax is a book minimum tax. That’s a spurious form of corporate tax calculated by an entirely different set of rules from the normal corporate income tax. Second, the bill’s spending is front-loaded into the next two or three years, while the taxes to pay for it are stretched out over a decade. So that means that the deficit will actually go up at first, spiking inflation for the foreseeable future. Third, the bulk of the burden from increased taxes will fall on workers making less than $400,000. One provision adds a whopping $80 billion to the IRS for increased enforcement—that’s six times the agency’s yearly budget. LINK
  6. Meet Mbiresaurus raathi, a 230 million-year-old dinosaur whose neighbors lived in Brazil. The oldest definitive dinosaur species ever discovered in Africa — and one of the oldest dino species to walk Earth — has been unearthed in Zimbabwe, a new study finds. The finding sheds new light on dinosaur evolution, and on one of the most fundamental questions of Triassic paleontology: Why did dinosaurs live in only some parts of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea? Scientists began working on the Pebbly Arkose Formation in northern Zimbabwe in 2017. After five years of careful excavation and COVID delays, they've finally unveiled the dig's star specimen: Mbiresaurus raathi, a nearly complete skeleton named after "Mbire," the Shona dynasty that once ruled the region. The species name honors Michael Raath, who helped discover the first fossils in the area. At roughly 230 million years old, the specimen is on par with the oldest dinosaurs ever found. Their results were published online Wednesday (Aug. 31) in the journal Nature(opens in new tab). "The earliest dinosaurs were small — far from the giants we usually think of," Christian Kammerer, a research curator of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences who was not involved in the research, told Live Science in an email. The newly named dinosaur is a sauropodomorph, a relative of the towering (and iconic) long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus. At around 6 feet (2 meters) long, or about as long as a Shetland pony, and 1.5 feet (0.5 m) tall at the hip, M. raathi wasn't tiny, but it would have been dwarfed by later sauropods, such as the massive 122-foot-long (37 m) Patagotitan. M. raathi lived during the late Triassic period (252 million to 201 million years ago) along the banks of an ancient river in what would become Zimbabwe. It was a rich ecosystem, filled with more than just dinosaurs. "I think a lot of the story is about all the different animals that we found together," study first author Christopher Griffin, a vertebrate paleontologist at Yale University, told Live Science. The excavation unearthed numerous protomammals known as cynodonts, as well as armored crocodilians, bizarre beaked reptiles called rhynchosaurs, and even evidence of an early meat-eating dinosaur. This assemblage almost exactly mirrors the fossils paleontologists might expect to find an ocean away, buried in the steppes of Patagonia or tucked away in the rocky outcroppings of Brazil. During the Triassic period, all of Earth's continents were smooshed together into one giant landmass known as Pangaea. Because of this ancient proximity, many regions that are now separated by entire oceans — such as the coasts of South America and Africa — once shared flora and fauna. "If you draw a line across Pangaea connecting northern Argentina and southern Brazil, you cross northern Zimbabwe as well," Griffin said. LINK
  7. Bluehost vs GoDaddy: Two top web hosting providers compared Bluehost(opens in new tab) and GoDaddy(opens in new tab) are two of the most po[CENSORED]r web hosting(opens in new tab) providers in today’s market. Both offer a range of features to suit every website builder(opens in new tab), from low-end servers for beginners all the way up to high-powered corporate solutions at an affordable price point. With over five million websites hosted by each company alone, it's an indication that they are doing something right - but which one will best serve your needs? While these web hosts share many similarities, they do have some key differences. When you're looking for a web host, reliability and performance should be at the top of your list. But what about features like WordPress hosting(opens in new tab), security, pricing, ease of use and customer support? This article will take an in-depth look to see which company has better offerings when it comes down to these metrics so that we can help direct you towards deciding on the perfect hosting provider. The similarity between Bluehost and GoDaddy is that they both offer a money-back guarantee. This means that if you're not satisfied with their service, you can get your money back. Another similarity is that they both have customer support. This is important because if you have any problems with your website, you can contact them and they will help you resolve the issue. Bluehost offers a free domain name for life with select hosting plans, while GoDaddy charges an annual fee for domain names. Bluehost has a more robust set of features included in their basic shared hosting plans than GoDaddy does. However, Bluehost offers more affordable VPS and dedicated hosting plans than GoDaddy. Another difference between Bluehost and GoDaddy is the price of their services. GoDaddy is generally more expensive than Bluehost. Also, both companies offer a variety of services at different price points. GoDaddy's Standard plan starts at $13.99/month which offers all the features in the basic plan with 50 GB storage and 500 email(opens in new tab) accounts. The Premium plan starts at $14.99 per month offering everything in the previous two plans, plus some additional features designed specifically for businesses. This includes a free toll-free number, private SSL certificate(opens in new tab), and priority customer support. GoDaddy also offers an ecommerce hosting(opens in new tab) plan, costing $29.99 per month. This plan includes all of the features of the previous three plans, plus some extras such as unlimited email accounts and a free shopping cart(opens in new tab), designed to help businesses sell online. From the above comparison, GoDaddy offers better features and value for money although it may seem a bit pricey. If you are on a tight budget, Bluehost might be a good start. Pricing is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a web host. Bluehost's basic plan starts at $2.99/month which will get you a free domain name, SSL, 10GB storage, and free WP integration while GoDaddy's basic plan starts at $6.99/month and offers SEO tools(opens in new tab), unlimited bandwidth, SSL, 10GB storage and up to 100 email accounts. Bluehost's Plus plan goes for $5.45/month inclusive of all the features in the basic plan plus 20GB storage space, Malware scanning, and unlimited websites. However, the Bluehost Choice plan goes for $5.95/month inclusive of all the features in other plans plus 40GB of storage space and the Pro plan starts at $13.45 with 100GB of storage space. LINK
  8. Japanese Government Will Finally Stop Using Floppy Disks and CD-ROMs IBM started to ship diskettes in 1973 and this type of removable storage media eventually become so po[CENSORED]r that Japanese government agencies imposed a rule to submit data on diskettes and over time on CD-ROMs. Apparently, this rule is still valid, so officials have been using diskettes and CD-ROMs — instead of emails or cloud storage services — to submit data to this day. Some of Japan's Ministers of State think that it's time to move forward. "Where can you buy floppy disks these days?" Taro Kono, Japan's Minister of Digital Affairs, asked reporters rhetorically on Tuesday, reports Nikkei. "We will change [these rules] promptly." At present, Japanese laws contain 1,900 provisions requiring the use of obsolete storage media, such as 3.5-inch diskettes or CD-ROMs. Going digital will make Japanese government agencies more efficient overall as file transfers via the Internet are quicker. But, like other authorities, Japanese government agencies must follow rules meticulously — and so the Japanese government has created a task force to revise the rules set decades ago. Nowadays it is not only hard to obtain diskettes (as they are barely manufactured by anyone), it's also difficult to use them to store anything, because modern text and spreadsheet files require much more space than their predecessors from the 1980s and 1990s. There are still applications that rely on file formats (and even software) released 30 or 40 years ago — and can therefore be stored on diskettes and/or CD-ROMs — the world has mostly moved on to USB flash drives, Blu-ray discs, and cloud storage services, all of which have larger capacities and are more efficient and reliable. That said, there are some industries that use diskettes and will continue to use them for a while. For example, some Boeing 747-400 planes use 3.5-inch diskettes for avionics software. Also, some of military equipment and sections (such as nuclear forces) continue to use not only 8-inch diskettes, but even punched cards. With thousands of laws requiring usage of diskettes or CD-ROMs, we assume it will take quite some time before the obsolete storage media goes extinct. Until then, one can still enjoy an external 3.5-inch diskette reader even on Windows 11 machines for as little as $20(opens in new tab) — though it does require a special driver from Microsoft. LINK

  10. Serena Williams plays a backhand against Danka Kovinić during the women's singles first round Monday at the US Open. (CNN)Serena Williams, looking to further delay the end of her storied tennis career, will take on world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia at the US Open in Flushing, New York, on Wednesday night. Williams began US Open singles play Monday with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Danka Kovinić of Montenegro. It was Williams' third match since announcing in Vogue magazine she will "evolve away from tennis" after the US Open. "I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn't feel like a modern word to me. I've been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people," Williams said in the Vogue article published earlier this month. "Maybe the best word to describe what I'm up to is evolution. I'm here to tell you that I'm evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me," she said. At her post-match news conference Monday, Williams was asked if this is definitely her last tournament. "Yeah, I've been pretty vague about it, right?" she said with a smile. "I'm going to stay vague because you never know." Williams also will open doubles play with her sister Venus Williams on Wednesday. The opening-round win over Kovinić was the best Serena Williams has looked since making her comeback from injury. She has managed to win just one match since returning to the circuit in June and has been unable to get close to the form that helped her win her last grand slam title in 2017. While Williams was still a way off that level in Monday's win over Kovinić, it will have certainly given her hope that her last dance at the US Open could be extended. One of the greatest tennis players ever, Williams has won 23 grand slam singles titles and has won the US Open six times, most recently in 2014. Now 40 years old, Williams' career will come full circle as her final match -- in whichever round that turns out to be -- is to be played at the site of the first of her grand slam singles wins, the 1999 US Open. Then just a teenager, Williams burst onto the scene to stun world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the final and lay the first stepping stone on her path to two decades of dominance. LINK

  15. The new Mafia game is still "a few years away," but it's happening. A rumor(opens in new tab) surfaced earlier this year claiming that 2K Games' studio Hangar 13 was working on a new Mafia game under new leadership, following the departure of longtime president and chief creative officer Haden Blackman. Now it's official: In an interview posted at mafiagame.com(opens in new tab) to mark the 20th anniversary of the original Mafia, general manager Roman Hladík finally confirmed that it's happening. "I'm happy to confirm we've started work on an all-new Mafia project!" Hladík said. "While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories." The May rumor indicated that the new Mafia game will be built in Unreal Engine 5 rather than the proprietary engine used for the previous games, and more interestingly it will reportedly be a prequel to the existing trilogy. The series has hopped around historically between games, from the early 1930s of the original game to the turbulent late-'60s of Mafia 3, so it's not entirely unexpected that the studio would opt for yet another era for the fourth game. There's certainly fertile ground for it: The Prohibition era is the classic Mafia setting but there was plenty going on(opens in new tab) around the turn of the 20th century, too. It's equally unsurprising that a new Mafia game, regardless of details, is happening: Mafia 3 didn't exactly knock our socks off, but it's a successful and well-liked series, and that makes the question of a sequel not an "if," but a "when." If you've never played Mafia and want to see where it all began, 2K Games is giving away the original on St(opens in new tab)eam over the weekend, beginning on September 1. The updated Mafia Definitive Edition(opens in new tab) is also on sale for $14/£12/€14—65% off the regular price—until September 8. 16. Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning to Russian forces during his evening address on Monday, saying it was time for them to "run away, go home." Kyiv, Ukraine (CNN)As Ukraine ramps up its offensive to retake Russian-occupied territory in the country's south, its forces have regained four villages and broken through Russian defenses at multiple points of the frontline in the Kherson region, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky also issued a warning to Russian forces during his evening address Monday, saying it was time for them to "run away, go home," and that "the occupiers must know we will chase them to the border." Yet one of his advisers cautioned that the operation will be a slow one, that would "grind the enemy." "This process will not be very fast," Oleksiy Arestovych, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said in a statement posted on Telegram late Monday, "but will end with the installation of the Ukrainian flag over all the settlements of Ukraine." "[The Ukrainian Armed Forces] have broken through the frontline in several sectors," Arestovych said in a video interview posted on YouTube, adding that Ukrainian forces were shelling ferry crossing points that Moscow is using to resupply Russian-occupied territory over the Dnipro River in the Kherson region. "We suppress their attempts to supply their groups on the west bank [of the Dnipro]," he said. "We strike at reserves, including reserves that are on the east bank and are trying to cross." "The operation began at night with massive shelling of Russian positions and the rear," the source, who is not being named for security reasons, told CNN. Russia's defense ministry acknowledged Kyiv's operation but claimed that Ukrainian troops had "suffered heavy losses" and "failed miserably" in their "attempted" offensive. CNN has not been able to verify both Russian and Ukrainian claims. The Kherson region, crucial to controlling Ukraine's southern coast and access to the Black Sea, was one of the first areas to be occupied by Russian forces when they invaded more than six months ago. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have been making advances around Kherson, including the targeting of critical bridges to disrupt Russian supply routes. At a Tuesday briefing, Natalia Humeniuk, spokeswoman for the Ukrainian military's Operational Command South, said damage to bridges across the Dnipro river means that Russian forces are unable to assist units on the frontlines further north.
