  11. . Update (Wednesday, June 14): we've updated this article with news about a leaked memo from Reddit's CEO, which could prolong the blackout. The Reddit blackout continues as we roll into day three of the protests, with thousands of subreddits still dark as part of the planned 48-hour pushback against new developer charges – and now a leaked internal memo from Reddit's CEO has added further fuel to the fire. A copy of the memo, picked up by The Verge, contains some bombshells that certainly isn't going to help the situation and could prolong the site's issues. According to the leak, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said: "There’s a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we’ve seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well" This reflects the Reddit management's confidence that the protests won't have long-term ramifications, with the site telling us "we're not planning any changes to the API updates we’ve previously announced". The blackout was scheduled to last for 48 hours from Monday, June 11 and, while some have returned, almost 7,000 subreddits are still dark, according to the very useful Reddit blackout tracker. Hundreds have also now pledged to remain dark indefinitely. These protests have been possible because Reddit relies on a vast army of volunteer moderators who keep discussions on topic and remove comments – but can also make subreddits private, or effectively take them 'dark'. On Monday June 12, Reddit actually crashed due to the blackout, with the site's status page reporting a "major outage". Those have now seemingly been resolved, with the Reddit status tracker showing a more healthy "all systems operational". But what happens next? And when are you going to be able to get your fix of r/funny, r/aww, and r/catswithjobs again? Here's all the latest news about the self-styled "front page of the internet Back in April, Reddit announced that it would start charging developers for access to its API. This API has allowed developers to build po[CENSORED]r, alternative smartphones apps like Apollo, which they did well before Reddit introduced its own official app in 2016. Those charges are due to come into play from June 19, which is why many third-party apps – including Apollo and Reddit is Fun – have announced that they'll no longer be available. That said, not all third-party apps will be wiped out – for example, the developer of Relay for Reddit has said in a new post that "a monthly subscription price of $3 (or less) might be achievable". The leaked internal memo from Reddit CEO Steve Huffman also states: "While the two biggest third-party apps, Apollo and RIF, along with a couple others, have said they plan to shut down at the end of the month, we are still in conversation with some of the others. And as I mentioned in my post last week, we will exempt accessibility-focused apps and so far have agreements with RedReader and Dystopia." Still, while Reddit hasn't officially revealed its new API pricing details, some developers have lifted the lid on the potential costs. In a post on r/apolloapp, the developer Christian Selig said that based on the "7 billion requests" (or times a user has triggered a need for API access) it would cost him $1.7 million (around £1.35m / AU$2.51m) per month. Although Selig stated that he is "deeply disappointed in this price", particularly as it has echoes of a similar policy by Twitter that he says was "publicly ridiculed", Reddit has denied that it has priced out developers of all third-party apps. We asked Reddit for official comment and it told us that "expansive access to data has impact and costs involved" and that it spends "millions of dollars on hosting fees". Reddit added that Apollo is "notably less efficient than other third-party apps" and that "the vast majority of API users will not have to pay for access". According to the site, "the Reddit Data API is free to use within the published rate limits so long as apps are not monetized". But the issue is that many existing apps like Apollo aren't really feasible as entirely free propositions, given the developer work involved, which is why many of the most po[CENSORED]r third-party apps (if not all of them) have stated that they'll be unable to continue from June 19 when the API charges start. 12. AMD's latest blog post on gaming graphics is doubling down on the importance of plenty of VRAM for modern gaming, pitching 12GB-plus as optimal for 1440p gaming. The only slight problem is that the GPUs AMD is pitching in the 1440p space are essentially over two years old at this point. In a blog post titled the "Importance of VRAM when gaming at 1440p in 2023", AMD's Matthew Hummel says the latest Steam survey data shows that 1440p is the sweet spot for PC gaming. And AMD recommends 12GB of VRAM for 1440p gaming at maximum settings. The blog post has various benchmark examples showing AMD's 12GB Radeon RX 6750 XT tearing Nvidia's 8GB RTX 4060 Ti a new one in games running at max texture detail and with ray tracing enabled. The latter is arguably the great irony in all this—that Nvidia's usual ray tracing advantage is reversed on low-VRAM RTX boards because enabling it can push VRAM usage beyond the available buffer. And that can really hurt performance. Of course, the caveat here is that simply running a game at maximum settings usually doesn't make sense. Typically, the very highest settings hobble performance horribly while not significantly improving visual quality over knocking things a notch down. So, you could argue AMD's benchmarks are somewhat contrived. On the other hand, there is also real value in being able to simply hit global maximum settings and be pretty confident that you're not going to run out of VRAM. The other snag with AMD's implied—and not so implied—criticism of Nvidia is that at least the latter has launched its latest 1440p contenders in the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti. The cards AMD pitches as its 1440p offerings, the RX 6700 XT and RX 6750 XT are now very old. We are expecting AMD to roll out new RX 7700 and RX 7800 boards. But at this stage, AMD is taking its sweet time. It's also worth noting that Nvidia unambiguously pitches the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti as a 1080p card. So criticising it for not being optimised for 1440p isn't entirely fair. Just to contradict that, it's likewise true that the 6700 XT undercuts the 4060 Ti on price and the 6750 XT is pretty much on par. It wouldn't really make sense to compare those AMD boards with the much more expensive RTX 4070 or RTX 4070 Ti. Overall, the moral of the story is that AMD does have a point here. It would be better if Nvidia put more VRAM on its graphics cards. But AMD's point would hit harder if it wasn't making it with what are now very old GPUs. This will run and run. In the meantime, here's hoping AMD gets those new 1440p GPUs out sooner rather than [https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-bigs-up-12gb-for-1440p-gaming-but-where-are-its-new-gpus/]
  13. Croatia are one win from their first major title after beating hosts the Netherlands in a dramatic Uefa Nations League semi-final. Substitute Bruno Petkovic struck from distance in extra-time before Luka Modric's penalty settled a remarkable game in Rotterdam. A 96th-minute Dutch equaliser from Noa Lang had denied Croatia in normal time. But Zlatko Dalic's side will now play Italy or Spain in Sunday's final, while the Dutch face a third-place play-off. Croatia had seemed destined for the final when Andrej Kramaric's penalty and a Mario Pasalic volley put them ahead after Donyell Malen's opener. But Lang's last-gasp hooked finish levelled the game at 2-2. Croatia, though, picked themselves up and Petkovic - introduced at the start of extra-time - slammed a fine strike past the Netherlands keeper Justin Bijlow. Their victory was sealed by 37-year-old talisman Modric from the penalty spot with four minutes left, after he was felled by a clumsy Tyrell Malacia challenge. It means Croatia have reached just their second international final, following the 2018 World Cup where they were beaten 4-2 by France. For the Dutch, their international trophy drought now extends to beyond 35 years - they have not won a major title since the 1988 European Championships. It also continues Ronald Koeman's inauspicious start to his second spell as the Netherlands manager, having lost 4-0 to France in a Euro 2024 qualifier in March. Magical Modric close to international glory Coming at the end of a long season - Nathan Ake, Denzel Dumfries and Marcelo Brozovic all played just four days after featuring in the Champions League final - both sides struggled to reach a competitive tempo in the early stages. But, by the end, fans inside De Kuip had witnessed a frenzied thriller. The Dutch, roared on by a colourful and boisterous crowd, found their rhythm first as Malen opened the scoring on 34 minutes. A nice passing move from the hosts reached the Borussia Dortmund striker 16 yards out, and he slotted into the bottom corner. Croatia, however, controlled possession better and eight minutes after the interval, Modric - making his 165th international appearance - capitalised on a loose touch from Cody Gakpo and was brought down in the area by the Liverpool forward. Kramaric calmly slotted the penalty down the middle. Croatia, who came from behind to beat Canada, Japan and Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar last year, looked to have completed yet another turnaround with 18 minutes to play. Luka Ivanusec lifted in a cross which Pasalic swept in first-time from 10 yards. The Netherlands - with former Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst brought on as a substitute - bombarded the Croatian box in response with crosses and long balls, finding reward in the sixth minute of stoppage time as Lang cleverly struck home a loose ball. But this Croatia side have built their reputation on never knowing when to quit. Their approach was exemplified by Modric, who claimed his side's fourth goal and is now within reach of historic international silverware to go with his trophy-laden club career at Real Madrid. 14. Lotus looks to be going after the electric-car lap record at the Nürburgring with an outlandish, track-ready version of its 1972bhp Evija hypercar. Understood to have been developed in partnership with race engineering firm Multimatic (known for its work on the Ford GT and Mercedes-AMG One), the heavily reworked prototype looks to be an almost entirely bespoke creation aimed at getting around a track as quickly as possible. Lotus hasn't officially confirmed plans to beat the Volkswagen ID R's record lap time of 6min 05.336sec, but it's understood that the track had been hired out exclusively for this prototype run and the conditions were perfect for a practice run. The British company hasn't announced a date for any official attempt on the record. The biggest clue to this prototype's ambition is the towering swan-neck spoiler at the rear, which wouldn't look out of place at Pikes Peak. A Lotus statement supplied to Autocar read: "The Evija X is an all-new technology concept from Lotus. Based on the Evija road car, it is the ultimate expression of Evija and has been testing on multiple race tracks in multiple countries in the last weeks. "We have made great progress, successfully meeting all our objectives and learning about the challenges of lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife. "The Lotus engineering team continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with the Evija and the world’s most powerful EV powertrain." Among the modifications are a downforce-boosting carbonfibre side skirts, a huge front splitter and aero-enhancing canards in a bid to keep the Evija planted around the 12.9-mile lap. Beyond the race-spec makeover, the Evija X is expected to pack more power than the standard Evija, which is already one of the most potent road cars on sale, with 1972bhp. No doubt conceived to operate purely at the track, it looks to also be the recipient of stringent lightening processes aimed at bringing its kerb weight down from the road car's 1700kg. Given that the Evija's standard battery weighs 718kg alone, this prototype is likely to have a much smaller pack, being geared more towards pace than endurance. We can see that the headlights, brake lights and wing mirrors have been removed, too, and the centre-lock wheels – wrapped in ultra-sticky Pirelli P-Zero slick tyres – are no doubt some of the lightest available. The interior looks to have been stripped out to accommodate a full race-spec roll cage. While not confirmed, the Evija X could be the first car to emerge from the newly created Lotus Advanced Projects (LAP) division, whose purpose is primarily to develop extreme, limited-run machines far removed from Hethel's road-car line-up. 15. charity has said an increase in the number of ponies in a part of Dartmoor will help restore the environment. The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust said it had been given permission from Natural England to increase the herd of ponies at its site at Bellever from 25 to up to 40 in the summer. It said it would be allowed to keep a smaller stock of 30 ponies at the 82-hectare (202-acre) site in the winter. The trust cited a University of Plymouth study, external that found grazing ponies at Bellever reduced the dominance of purple moor grass and its impact on plant and animal diversity. Healthier seedlings were able to germinate after the ponies trampled the purple moor grass, according to the study. Malcolm Snelgrove, the charity's chairman, said the findings were encouraging. "The positive impact ponies have made at Bellever is very exciting and should help ensure that suitably hardy ponies of all types and breeds are recognised and appreciated as effective conservation grazers to support biodiversity and tackle some of the factors affecting Dartmoor's landscape," he said. The increase to the pony herd at Bellever comes amid a review on the way protected sites on Dartmoor are managed. It will make recommendations on the "most effective grazing and management regime", while balancing "long-term and sustainable delivery of other priorities such as agricultural production, public access and cultural and natural heritage", the government said. 16. The sales of vapes to children is a "major concern", a Welsh council has heard. Officers at Caerphilly council were reporting on the issue after carrying out operations in the county last year. During those test purchase exercises, one in five of the attempts to buy vape or alcohol products resulted in an illegal sale. The Welsh government says it is looking at how to prevent the use of e-cigarettes by children. During two operations last year, officers from the trading standards department in Caerphilly organised 25 attempted purchases in the county, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Five resulted in a sale to an underage volunteer. Reporting to the council's environment and sustainability committee, Jacqui Morgan, trading standards, licensing and registrars manager described the situation as a "major concern". During 2022-2023, the council received 55 complaints - five in relation to alcohol, one relating to tobacco, and 39 relating to vaping products. Ms Morgan said: "It's a major concern, and in England they have given additional resources to do more test purchases, there hasn't been any funding in Wales." Last year, a BBC Wales investigation found 40% of shops it attended in Cardiff sold e-cigarettes illegally to children. Recent data suggests a doubling in the percentage of young people vaping across the UK. A Welsh government spokesperson said: "Reports indicating an increase in use of these products by young people are very concerning. "As part of our strategy to deliver a smoke-free Wales by 2030, we are looking at what more we can do to prevent the use of e-cigarettes by children and young people and will publish that work later this year. "E-cigarettes should never be used by children, young people and non-smokers. "It is illegal to sell electronic cigarettes or e-liquids to someone under 18. It is also an offence for adults to buy, or try to buy, tobacco products or e-cigarettes for someone under the age of 18.° [https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cmjvkxnvxd5o]
  17. A Guatemala court has sentenced leading journalist José Zamora to six years in jail for money laundering, in a case condemned by human rights groups. Zamora, 66, was also fined $38,000 (£30,000) - but cleared of blackmail and influence-peddling charges. He described the charges against him as "political persecution". Zamora is the founder of El Periódico, a newspaper that regularly reported on alleged corruption involving President Alejandro Giammattei and his allies. The po[CENSORED]r daily paper shut down in May after nearly 30 years in operation. During the high-profile trial in capital Guatemala City, the state prosecutor's office sought a sentence of 40 years for the respected journalist. Outside court, Zamora said he was "still innocent" of the charges against him, and that his wife had been forced into exile in the US over fears she might also be targeted by President Giammattei's government. Civil rights groups say Wednesday's court's ruling is the latest erosion of democracy in the impoverished Central American nation - just days ahead of a general election in which four opposition candidates have been disqualified. They also point to what they describe as growing authoritarianism under Mr Giammattei's rule. The president denies the accusations. Zamora was arrested last July - a move that was soon followed by police raids on El Periódico's office and his home in Guatemala City. The raids were widely covered in the country's national media, with several television channels live-streaming the event. Rafael Curruchiche, the head of the Guatemalan public ministry's anti-corruption unit, later said that Zamora was being charged "as an individual businessman, not as a journalist, and this action is not against his paper". Zamora has won several international journalism awards, including Columbia University's prestigious Maria Moors Cabot prize for distinguished work in upholding press freedom in the Americas and contributing to inter-American understanding.
