In this April 17, 2019, file photo, a patrol car is parked in front of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., where two student killed 12 classmates and a teacher in 1999. Authorities in a Colorado community are gauging support for demolishing Columbine High School and rebuilding it nearby. In a letter Thursday, Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Jason Glass says the school building has remained “a source of inspiration” for people with a dark interest in the 1999 shooting that killed 12 students and a teacher. In April, a Florida teenager who authorities say was obsessed with the shooting and may have been planning an attack in Colorado just ahead of the 20th anniversary was found dead in an apparent suicide. The district also released an online survey to assess community support for a ballot measure earmarking $60 million to $70 million for a Columbine construction project. Columbine school shooting — family, friends pay tribute to victims on 20th anniversary Preliminary ideas include preserving the library built after the 1999 shooting and incorporating it into a new school building. Glass says the number of people trying to enter the school or trespassing on its grounds reached record levels this year as the community marked the 20th anniversary of the massacre.

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. have agreed to jointly develop a battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) platform and a BEV utility vehicle for sale under each company's own brand, Toyota said on Thursday. The companies will apply Subaru's all-wheel-drive technologies and Toyota's vehicle electrification technologies, Toyota said in a statement. Toyota and Subaru launched a partnership in 2005. Toyota is the largest shareholder in Subaru with a 16.8 percent stake, according to Refinitiv data. Tokyo, Japan, June 6, 2019―Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Subaru Corporation (Subaru) disclosed today that they have agreed to jointly develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and to jointly develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company's own brand. By combining their respective strengths, such as the all-wheel-drive technologies that Subaru has cultivated over many years and the vehicle electrification technologies that Toyota is employing to bring together other companies that share its aspirations, the two companies intend to take up the challenge of creating attractive products with appeal that only BEVs can offer. Ever since concluding an agreement on business collaboration in 2005, Toyota and Subaru have been deepening their cooperation in various fields, including development, production, and sales. Examples include efforts that led to the start of sales of the jointly developed rear-wheel-drive Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ in 2012 and the start of sales of Subaru's Crosstrek Hybrid original plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in the United States, to which was applied knowledge related to Toyota's HEV technologies.

This photo taken on May 20, 2019 shows automated urban subway cars waiting to be exported to Singapore at a port in Qingdao, in China's eastern Shandong province. Authorities say five workers are confirmed dead after the collapse of a subway tunnel under construction in the northeastern Chinese city of Qingdao. The body of the last worker listed as missing was recovered Saturday, five days after the tunnel crumbled with the workers inside. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation. China has been rapidly building and expanding mass rapid transit systems to accommodate growing urban po[CENSORED]tions and keep the slowing economy growing through government fiscal stimulus and infrastructure projects. Partly as a result, China has suffered a steady stream of industrial accidents this year, including building and worksite collapses. In March, 78 people were killed in a blast at a chemical plant in the country’s east.

Toyota will launch the all-new Glanza in the Indian market in the coming month. The Glanza has already been revealed through various spy pictures of the uncamouflaged vehicles. Here is one more video by Tanmay Gupta that shows different colours of Toyota Glanza parked at what it looks like a stockyard. he video shows the upcoming Toyota Glanza from all around. However, since the cars parked at the stockyard were locked, the video does not show the interior of the car properly. However, we can see the exterior of the vehicle from all around. It should be noted that the Toyota Glanza will not offer a host of changes compared to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Instead, at the front, only a different grille is used. Even the alloy wheels of the Toyota Glanza are identical to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The all-new Glanza will be launched on 6th June in the Indian market. It will be available only in two trims and both of them will be powered only by the petrol engine option. The video shows quite a few colours of the upcoming Toyota Glanza including a dark red, blue, grey and white. It is not known if Toyota will offer more colours when it is officially launched. The Toyota Glanza will offer both 1.2-litre K12B and the 1.2-litre K12C DualJet petrol engines that are available with the Toyota Baleno. The DualJet engine that was launched with the Baleno earlier offers a mild-hybrid system. The same mild-hybrid system will be available on the Glanza too. Maruti Suzuki will discontinue using the 1.3-litre diesel engine, which is sourced from Fiat after the implementation of BS-VI norms. Maybe that’s the reason Toyota has only chosen to offer the petrol engine for the time being. This is not the first time that Toyota has offered a single fuel option at this price point. The Toyota Yaris also offers only a petrol engine option. It should also be noted that Toyota Glanza will only be offered in both manual and CVT automatic option just like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. So there will be two-trim levels and four variants in total. Coming to the interiors, the Toyota Glanza will be identical to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Even the infotainment system seems to be the same as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Except for the logo, everything else remains the same. It should be noted that Maruti Suzuki will manufacture the Toyota Glanza at its Gujarat plant. The Toyota Glanza is expected to offer a standard 3 year/1,00,000 km warranty as against the 2 year/40,000 km standard warranty offered by Maruti Suzuki. Toyota initially aims to sell around 2,000 units of the Glanza in the Indian market and increase the number over time.

If you’ve ever anxiously waited in line for a women’s washroom while watching men filter in and out of their respective stalls, you’re not alone. A new U.K. report argued there should be two female toilets to every male one, adding the lack of public toilets is a threat to a woman’s health and equality. The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) report said women need more toilets because “of time-consuming factors related to clothing, menstruation and anatomical differences.” The report’s authors pointed to “potty parity” — which is defined as equal speed of access to public restrooms — legislation that exists in certain places in the U.S. that recommends a 2:1 toilet ratio in favour of women. Currently, in the U.K., the standard is 1:1. “Equality of access to toilets is an important factor, particularly for women who take longer and cannot use urinals,” the authors wrote. “This leads to the long queues familiar in many public toilets.” The report, titled Taking the P***, also calls for more gender-neutral washrooms to ensure “equality of access” and to address the needs of transgender individuals. “Public toilets are no luxury,” Shirley Cramer, the chief executive of the RSPH, said in a statement. “It’s high time we begin to see them as basic and essential parts of the community — just like pavements and street lights — that enable people to benefit from and engage with their surroundings.” Why women need more public washrooms Recent research out of the University of British Columbia on potty parity found that because female bathrooms typically have longer wait times than male ones, women do not have equal access. The researchers wrote that current bathroom codes and designs in business facilities, like restaurants and concert venues, “are not based on objective analyses” and are instead influenced by male bias

Israel’s parliament on Monday passed a preliminary motion to dissolve itself. The move further pushed the country toward an unprecedented political impasse, less than two months after elections seemed to promise Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a new mandate. If the bill receives final passage in a vote scheduled Wednesday, Israel would be forced to hold new elections — sending the political system into disarray. Netanyahu appeared to have a clear path to victory, and a fourth consecutive term, after the April 9 elections. His Likud party emerged tied as the largest party in the 120-seat parliament, and with his traditional allies, he appeared to control a solid 65-55 majority. But he has struggled to form a government ahead of a looming deadline to do so. His prospective coalition has been thrown into crisis in recent days by former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, an ally and sometimes rival of Netanyahu’s. WATCH: Israelis protest moves to grant Netanyahu immunity, limit Supreme Court Netanyahu delivered a primetime statement on Monday calling on his potential partners to put “the good of the nation above every other interest” in order to avoid sending the country once again to “expensive, wasteful” elections. He placed the blame on Lieberman for creating the crisis, but said he was hopeful his efforts to salvage a compromise in the next 48 hours would succeed. Lieberman has insisted on passing a new law mandating that young ultra-Orthodox men be drafted into the military, like most other Jewish males. Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox allies demand that the draft exemptions remain in place. Without the five seats of Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party, Netanyahu cannot muster a majority. “The draft law has become a symbol and we will not capitulate on our symbols,” Lieberman defiantly said, vowing to press for new elections if his demands are not met. Netanyahu and Lieberman met Monday evening in a last-ditch effort to find a compromise. Israeli media said the meeting ended without any progress, and quoted Likud officials as saying Netanyahu would soon order new elections.

Transportation experts say autonomous vehicles could lead to traffic and congestion increasing by up to 30 per cent in cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. A report in the United States highlighted the major issues around adding self-driving cars to America's busiest roads. Jamie Mauracher reports. We all know finding a parking spot in major Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver can be a huge hassle, but what if you could ask your vehicle to circle around the block or head home and come back for you? In the world of autonomous vehicles (AVs), also known as self-driving cars, this concept is a real possibility. And while it may seem convenient, saving you time and money, transportation and urban experts are warning it could cause a congestion crisis. “We could see as much as a 30 per cent increase in total vehicle traffic,” Todd Litman, the executive director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute in British Columbia. Right now, the average commute in Canada’s largest city, Toronto, is already 34 minutes and with this projection, it could mean people are stuck on the street for closer to 45 minutes. For those who live in Vancouver or Montreal, where the average commute time is 30 minutes, you could face an extra 10 minutes stuck in traffic. Self-driving cars like it slow, steady Michal Antkiewicz, a research associate with the University of Waterloo, has spent the last three years working on the country’s future of self-driving vehicles. “We are at least five years away (when it comes to AVs on our roads),” he said. But in the United States, the self-driving vehicles are already causing traffic jams. “Drivers are becoming frustrated in areas where automated vehicles are being tested,” said Antkiewicz, explaining AVs prefer slow and steady streets. “[AVs] will never break any traffic rules. If there is a speed of 50 km/h, [AVs] will go 50 km/h. [AVs] will wait for an efficient gap to merge into traffic where a human would bend the rules to make progress, autonomous vehicles will be more cautious.” In attempt to stay safe, Antkiewaicz said AVs have the ability to communicate with one another, gauging speed, distance and traffic. According to a recent report out of the U.S., these cars could, in theory, even collaborate to cause a traffic jam. Robot-fueled gridlock Adam Millard-Ball, an assistant professor in the environmental studies department at UC Santa Cruz, said AVs have an incentive to generate congestion. “Cruising at low speeds is not only cheaper per hour than paid parking, but cheaper per hour than traveling at high speeds,” he told Global News. “If they are just waiting, then they want to get stuck in traffic on purpose and create their own traffic congestion.” Ball predicted that even just 2,000 self-driving vehicles on San Francisco’s streets would slow traffic, on smaller side roads, to around three km/h. How do we keep things moving? According to most experts, the answer is very simple: road pricing. “We need to make people pay for the full use of the road. We need congestion pricing,” Richard Florida told Global News, referencing the regime in London, England. And while the urban studies expert said this pricing model is the most obvious move, he warned keeping traffic free-flowing is not just a single-solution scenario.

The passing of a loved one can be utterly devastating. Grief is all-encompassing, and for some, it never really goes away.Tattoos present a unique way to cope with the grief. “Memorial tattoos help continue bonds with the deceased,” said Deborah Davidson. She works as a professor of sociology at York University, and she’s the creator of The Tattoo Project. “Tattoos can be understood as a form of public storytelling,” said Davidson. “Stories help us make sense and meaning out of things that happened to us.” When placed in a spot where other people can see it — as most are — a memorial tattoo is often an intentional conversation-starter. “People fear their loved one will be forgotten… not by themselves, but by others,” Davidson said. “[Tattoos] open that dialogue so you can talk about what your tattoo means and remember the person you lost that way.” Some memorial tattoos have a beginning and an end date, making it obvious that it represents a life that has come to an end. However, in Davidson’s experience, most memorial tattoos are more inconspicuous. “The stories associated with lots of these tattoos are not sad stories. People want to remember their loved ones and have happy memories of them,” she said. The permanence of body tattoos can also have a comforting quality for someone dealing with tragic loss.
