MIT researchers have created a new nanoparticulate drug that can provide a new way to treat glioblastoma, an extremely aggressive brain tumor whose life expectancy for diagnosed patients is less than 15 months old. Particles, which carry two different substances, are made to easily pass the blood-brain barrier and attack the tumor cells. A drug damages cell DNA, while the second one interferes with cells that normally repair damage, writes Phys. In experiments on mice, researchers have shown that particles can diminish the size of tumors and prevent their recurrence. "What's unique here is that we just could not use a mechanism to break the blood-brain barrier and effectively treat tumors, but we could also administer this combination of drugs," said Paula Hammond, director of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the lead authors of the study. Nanoparticles used in this study are spherical vesicles known as liposomes, which can carry a substance in the core and the other in an outer layer. To pass the blood-brain barrier, they were wrapped in a protein called transferrin. Also, this protein binds to proteins found on the surface of cancer cells, allowing particles to accumulate directly on the tumor and thus avoid healthy brain cells.
