  3. Windows 11’s Microsoft Store will soon update third-party apps, not just those hosted on Microsoft’s servers The update system will soon show third-party app updates alongside Microsoft apps, activated by clicking the 'Get updates' button This change makes it easier to manage all app updates in one place, saving time and reducing manual checks Microsoft is working on improving Windows 11’s Microsoft Store by making it able to update apps that aren’t hosted on its own servers. Until now, this wasn’t the case and Windows 11 users could only update apps via the Microsoft Store that were downloaded from the company’s own servers. However, many app developers hosted their own apps, which meant that while they could be discovered and downloaded from the Microsoft Store, you could not easily update them. Thankfully, in this update, the Microsoft Store will be able to show updates for third-party apps published and maintained by companies and developers other than Microsoft itself. The store’s update system will now feature these and they will appear in your Microsoft Store update list, which is generated when you click on ‘Get updates’ on the Downloads page in the Microsoft Store. The new feature is currently being tested in all channels of the Windows Insider Program, with the Microsoft Store listing app updates provided by publishers and developers other than Microsoft as ‘provided and updated’ apps. A little much-needed TLC for the Microsoft Store This change seems pretty useful to me, making it easier to keep track of all of your app updates in one place whether they’re store-hosted or not. Now, clicking on ‘Get updates’ in the store will make updates for both types of apps appear, but only apps hosted by Microsoft will be updated automatically. Still, it’ll save you the time and trouble of having to seek out updates for different tools across different websites for each third-party app you’ve installed. I’m always pleased to see Microsoft make Windows 11 more convenient to use and improve the oft-neglected Microsoft Store to become, as Windows Central calls it, a ‘one-stop shop’ for all the updates you might need and want. Of course, this only applies to apps you can get from the Microsoft Store in the first place, but this could encourage more third party app makers to bring their products to the Microsoft Store, confident in the knowledge that they can keep control over their app updates while still making it easy for their users to keep their software updated with new features and security fixes. 4. Intel recently revealed the B580 and B570 GPUs, which rival the best graphics cards. Chinese publication MyDrivers has extensively pictured the upcoming Arc Battlemage B580, showing pretty much every inch of the graphics card. The word on the street says reviewers aren't supposed to show internals until the full review release date. Although the B580 doesn’t officially release until December 13, Intel has given reviewers some leeway to publish images before full reviews go up on launch day. MyDrivers seems to have taken that permission as far as it can go and has published a complete photo shoot of the B580 inside and out. While Intel has published some renders of the B580, the real thing is much truer to life. The images show that the B580 Limited Edition doesn’t look all that different from the A750 and A770 Limited Edition models. The card is still dark gray with a matte finish, emblazoned with the ‘Intel Arc’ moniker and the card's name, and has two run-of-the-mill fans. Intel made a few minor alterations: widening the exhausts at the side of the card and changing the design of the IO plate. The most significant adjustment Intel made was adding a hole in the backplate, creating another exhaust vent for the cooler. The design was likely inspired by Nvidia’s own Founder’s Edition GPUs, which have sported partial backplates since the RTX 30 series. Intel didn’t go so far as to put the fans on alternating sides; however, it is a design choice that’s still unique to Nvidia cards. The B580 probably would have run fine without this hole in the backplate, given that the GPU only has a total board power of 190 watts, but it does bode well for higher-end models with greater power draw, should they exist. Under the hood, the B580 looks like a pretty normal GPU with a copper cold plate on the cooler, thermal pads on the six memory chips and VRMs, and a solitary 8-pin power plug. It is notable, though, how small the PCB is; the cooler is about twice as long as the actual card. That could open the door for small, single-fan models of the B580 and B570, but none of the third-party cards pictured so far sport a single-fan cooler. The BGM-G21 silicon lies at the center of the small PCB, which contains six Samsung-branded GDDR6 memory chips. The chips are rated for 20 Gbps but only run at 19 Gbps out of the gate. With Battlemage, Intel released Intel Graphics Software, giving users more freedom to finetune their Arc graphics cards. In one of the Intel shared screenshots, we can see the Arc B580 with the option to overclock the VRAM to 22 Gbps. The Arc B580 will hit the market next week with a $249 price tag. While the pricing looks attractive, we'll soon see what the B580 brings to the table regarding performance. 5. Friends, let me summon my full videogame-expert authority to tell you: Studios don't like it when you pirate their games. They're not fans! And fair enough, really. If I found out that someone was filtering all my articles into Athletic Dame Repacks that you had to read off of torrented .iso files, I'd be… mystified, primarily—this is a free website—but also a bit miffed. That sets me apart from the good folks at Safety Stoat Studios, a small studio that specialises in "innovative games that run on outdated hardware," meaning Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games released (on Itch.io) in our big year of 2024. Generally, the expectation is that curious players will check them out on emulators, but Safety Stoat recently became aware of at least one entrepreneur who had taken one of its games, packaged it up in seemingly era-appropriate Japanese Sega packaging, and began flogging it for $120 on eBay. But although you might think Safety Stoat would be upset at someone trying to turn a quick buck off a nicked version of its game, the studio was chuffed. "We have been pirated; we're a real game studio now!" it declared in a blogpost on Itch. "After 12 games, 2 albums, and a lot of elbow grease, prayers, tears, adrenaline, and cortisol, we have arrived in the space traditionally occupied by industry giants… we now have unauthorized reproductions of our IP showing up in Asia!" Of course, the people at Safety Stoat are very keen that no one actually drop over a hundred bucks on a samizdat copy of their profoundly free videogame Mythdragon, but they can't help but appreciate the burnished bonafides. "We could not, in a million years, convince somebody that our game had a rare, Japan-only cartridge release and was somehow worth $120. But, here it is! Free marketing! "Of course, I would feel very bad if anybody paid $120 for a free game, but I do hope that somebody sees the listing and, perhaps, Googles it to find the game's real web page." To be fair to the faker, the box looks pretty convincing. Then again, that's mostly because it straightforwardly rips off the boxart for Dragonfire, a real game from 1982. Still, someone went through the trouble to slap some genuine screenshots on the back, gin up a fake manual, and create the cartridge. Points for effort. "The title does look badass and we like the hiragana(?) below, although we have no idea what it says," says Safety Stoat. In the comments, Mina Harker points out the katakana is a transliteration of Mythdragon: "ミmi スsu ドdo ラra ゴgo ンn". Anyway, the Stoat was stoked. "Boo-ya! We win! We're a real developer now! In your face, homebrew-games-convention-that-shall-not-be-named-that-rejected-all-our-submissions-last-month!" declares the studio by way of conclusion, while also reiterating that you should, under no circumstances, actually buy the dang thing. "It's less about the copyright infringement and more about our mission. When we release games for free, it's because the games are supposed to be for everybody. Download our games! Enjoy them! Share them! We hope they make your life a little bit brighter!"
