  3. At the CES tech megashow in Las Vegas, it is unusual to see an entrepreneur hold up a plant and present it as the latest breakthrough in consumer technology. But for NeoPlants co-founder Patrick Torbey, the gathering held annually just after the new year should not be thought of as “only about machine technology and electronics”. “It’s also about natural technology that we can leverage using these really cool engineering techniques,” Torbey told AFP. NeoPlants, a Paris-based startup, was showing off a bioengineered plant capable of purifying indoor air of toxic pollutants “by doing the work of 30 regular houseplants”, according to its website. Technology geared towards helping the environment has steadily increased in number at CES since the Sin City expo began fifty years ago. But observers often doubt the seriousness of the consumer tech industry’s commitment to protect the environment, with all the real excitement focused on smart TVs and robots instead of the more complicated and less profitable project of saving the planet. “Until it really, really matters for consumers, it’s just going to kind of be this trend that's over here on the side,” said Ben Arnold, research firm NPD's consumer electronics analyst. “As somebody who studies the market, I’m just not seeing yet where (environmental-minded tech) makes a difference in terms of units and dollars,” he added. Ran Roth, the head of tech company Sensibo, agreed that successful devices were the ones that made financial sense and believed his products did just that. Roth’s devices use artificial intelligence and sensors to better manage air conditioning, an important concern in the often blistering heat of Israel, where his company is based. Sensibo’s sensors measure humidity and temperature, and use software that learns a user’s habits, thereby saving energy and money. Roth said new technology should have a “path to profitability” if it is going to thrive, a recurrent shortcoming of so called green tech that so often fails to be bankable. “What is good about smart thermostats is that they are readily available and they offer the highest return on investment,” said Roth, who called air conditioning a “human right”. But as the climate emergency worsens, industry observers said major tech companies were under more pressure to commit to sustainability goals. “We have seen the public naming and shaming of organisations who indulged in greenwashing over the past year,” said Abhijit Sunil of Forrester Research. “So a lot of organisations are kind of careful in what they mention as their sustainability initiatives and they are now as transparent as possible,” he said. Sunil said that the real advances on the environment were to be seen in the industrial sector, agreeing that the consumer gadget business may be a step behind when it came to doubling down on going green. Product design, manufacturing and packaging with an eye on a company’s waste and carbon footprint were the low hanging fruits when it came to environment technology, he said. One such company, ACWA Robotics, won plaudits at CES for a robot dedicated to the detection and prevention of water leaks in underground pipes. In France, where the startup is located, 20% of drinking water is estimated to be lost due to leaky pipes. Fighting for the environment “is the challenge of a century”, ACWA Robotics engineer Elise Lengrand told AFP. https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2023/01/09/ces-2023-green-tech-fights-for-limelight-at-gadget-fest
  4. In a Senate hearing held yesterday, February 9th, the Chief Operating Officer for Southwest Airlines, Andrew Watterson, stated that the airline's scheduling software will undergo a major upgrade today, February 10th. The promised upgrade comes following one of the largest airline scheduling disasters in history, as in late December 2022, most of Southwest Airlines' operations crumbled. The collapse of the airline's operations primarily came at the hands of an outdated scheduling system. Southwest has pledged to fix these mistakes and has ensured that nothing of the sort will ever happen again. Executive testimony In mid-December, a string of winter storms prompted thousands of flight delays and cancelations across the USA. However, most airlines recovered from the disruptions over the next several days. Southwest, on the other hand, did not. The system used to assign crews to planes became overwhelmed with the high volume of changes, causing it to fail. This led to more than 16,000 flight cancelations and cost the airline an estimated $800 million. Since the problems first arose, the airline has been under heavy public scrutiny for the failure and for inadequately compensating displaced passengers. While Southwest temporarily fixed the problem by restarting the system and rebuilding its schedule from the ground up, the damage had already been done. This wave of cancelations led the US Senate to hold the hearing yesterday entitled "Strengthening Airline Operations and Consumer Protections." For the hearing, the committee requested that the airline send a senior executive to represent the airline. Watterson was chosen for this role as the airline reports that the CEO, Bob Jordan, had a previous commitment. During the hearing, Watterson claimed that the airline is taking all necessary action to prevent such a disaster from occurring again. Watterson said the problems occurred due to how winter operations were handled. He later assured the committee that the airline would make changes, stating, "The root cause was how we handled our winter operations, and that's where you will see us put some focus over a multiyear period because that's what started the dominoes falling and the last domino was the crew scheduling system." Later in his testimony, Watterson stated that the flight scheduling system did have an issue that contributed to the meltdown. He said that while the problem will be fixed Friday, February 10th, the airline still plans to replace the entire flight scheduling system. The Dallas Morning News quoted Watterson sharing the following, https://simpleflying.com/southwest-airlines-scheduling-software-fixed-today/
  5. There are a few cards selling right near MSRP, though they're still questionable. For example, the Peladn RTX 3080 10GB is the cheapest 3080 card around (that's not a used or refurbished model), but that's basically an unknown brand. Most Nvidia cards are still selling above their MSRPs, even when on sale. Best AMD Graphics Card Prices GPU Performance Best Price Get Latest Prices Radeon RX 6950 XT 144.9 $759 (ASRock OC Formula RX 6950 XT) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6900 XT 138.6 $699 (ASRock RX 6900 XT Formula OC(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6800 XT 132.9 $554 (PowerColor RX 6800 XT Red Devil(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6800 122.9 $499 (XFX Speedster SWFT319 RX 6800) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6750 XT 111.9 $399 (ASRock Challenger Pro RX 6750 XT) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6700 XT 105.9 $339 (ASRock RX 6700 XT Challenger D(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6700 10GB 93.5 $319 (XFX Speedster SWFT309 RX 6700) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6650 XT 85.6 $284 (ASRock Challenger D Radeon RX 6650) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6600 XT 83.6 $289 (ASRock Challenger D RX 6600 XT) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6600 71.3 $209 (ASRock Radeon RX 6600) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6500 XT 33.2 $149 (Sapphire RX 6500 XT Pulse(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Radeon RX 6400 25.7 $129 (XFX RX 6400 SWFT105(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg AMD offers quite a bit more value for your money, and it has some excellent deals in the budget to midrange bracket. The RX 6600 dipped as low as $189 on Black Friday, and the cheapest we're seeing is now $209. The RX 6650 XT at $249 is still a great value as well if you can spend more. All of AMD's GPUs are selling below their original MSRPs these days, which they should be considering some of the GPUs are two years old. Of course, some of those MSRPs were inflated thanks to the GPU shortages last year. There's also the Radeon RX 7900-series to contend with, priced at $899 and $999 and potentially delivering up to 50% more performance than the RX 6950 XT. That's pushing prices down on the older GPUs, which is what we'd expect, whereas Nvidia prices have shot up to "leave room" for the 30-series. We wouldn't recommend paying much more than around $650 for an RX 6950 XT given the upcoming cards. Best Intel Graphics Card Prices GPU Performance Best Price Get Latest Prices Intel Arc A770 16GB 85.3 $329 (ASRock Phantom Gaming Arc A770 8GB) Amazon | Newegg Intel Arc A770 8GB 82.7 $329 (ASRock Arc A770 8GB Phantom Gaming(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Intel Arc A750 77.2 $274 (ASRock Arc A750 Challenger(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Intel Arc A380 31.1 $139 (ASRock Arc A380 Challenger(opens in new tab)) Amazon | Newegg Like Nvidia, there aren't really many deals as such on Intel's Arc GPUs. At least the Arc A770, A750, and A380 are all available for purchase right now, though the A770 16GB Limited Edition is back ordered (again). There's even an ASRock A750 priced below MSRP, so one of the four potential Intel GPUs qualifies as a sale. Performance from Arc GPUs continues to improve, with the A750 and A770 generally beating Nvidia's RTX 3060. It costs less than the Nvidia card as well, and delivers superior ray tracing performance compared to AMD's GPUs. But with rasterization performance roughly matching the RX 6650 XT, the Arc 700-series unfortunately still looks overpriced. What to Look for in a Graphics Card Deal When shopping for a graphics card, consider the following. What resolution, settings do you want to play at? A low-end budget graphics card can play games at 1080p in medium settings, but if you want to play at ultra settings, you'll need to get at least a mid-range card. As you move up the stack of cards, you can play at 2K resolution and higher settings or, with the priciest cards, 4K. How many fps do you consider smooth? Most people consider 30 fps the bare minimum for playability and 60 fps decent. However, if you want less lag for eSports gaming, you'll want to be able to go to over 100 fps at reasonable settings. See our GPU benchmark hierarchy to find out how each GPU fares. Do you have enough power? Make sure that you have enough capacity from your power supply to support the card. If you're not sure, use a tool such as Newegg's power supply calculator(opens in new tab) to see how much you need. If your power supply can't handle the card, either get a new PSU or a different card. Will it fit in your case? If you've got a small PC case, make sure you check the length of the card against the case's clearance numbers. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/best-graphics-card-deals-now
  6. Chronologically, this is the second batch of solo Venom, covering 1994 to 1995, and opening with ‘The Mace’. Hopes may be high as Carl Potts wrote the best Venom story in The Enemy Within, but his form has dipped. He includes the situations established by the writers who followed including, as unlikely as it seems, Venom’s girlfriend, and his status as protector of San Francisco’s homeless, and throws in a mercenary wearing a suit with stealth technology. Liam Sharp’s art is a mixed blessing (sample art left). It’s messy looking with the viewpoints often not the best chosen, but he’s also the first of Venom’s solo artists to really exaggerate the character, removing him from resembling Spider-Man so closely. Why his armoured assassin so resembles a version of Iron Man is never explained. Eddie Brock’s girlfriend Beck also features in ‘Nights of Vengeance’ where Brock’s life is complicated by a second woman falling for him. Both that and the title story are written by Howard Mackie. He has a few interesting ideas, but these are buried in stories without any kind of creativity in the telling. Venom is first teamed with Vengeance to fight a group equipped with alien technology, Ron Lim’s art the epitome of 1990s excess, with poorly drawn people (sample art right) and no sense for page layouts. His highlight is the visual effect devised for those using alien technology. Splitting Mackie’s two stories is Venom’s encounter with Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly, later Scarlet Spider. If any ongoing project exemplified Marvel’s 1990s mediocrity it was the endless saga of Peter Parker’s clone, and here among much hand-wringing and soul-searching he decides to prove himself by dealing with Venom. Mackie and Terry Kavanagh saturate the four chapters in fake emotion, expository dialogue and repetition. It may be in 1990s style, but at least artists Steven Butler and Tom Lyle show some talent. The title story has Brock separated from symbiote, but never mind because the surrogates introduced in Lethal Protector provide substitute action, while the main symbiote occupies others as they search for Eddie. The fundamental idea isn’t poor, but it’s dragged on, has unrealistic dialogue and Ron Randall attempting to alter his natural style to match the excess of previous Venom artists isn’t a pretty sight. Once again, there’s little to recommend among this mediocre content, but it’s all available along with much more in the first oversized hardcover Venomnibus. Way back in the 1990s there was also a slimmer Separation Anxiety paperback presenting just the four chapters of that story. Follow the link for greater detail. The next collection chronologically is Carnage Unleashed.. https://theslingsandarrows.com/venom-separation-anxiety-2/
