  1. Face it, no one really needs to pay for backup these days, yet I recommend that you plop down the $45 that will get you R-Drive Image. Why? Because it’s the only Windows backup solution that I’ve ever tried that hasn’t let me down in one way or another. In fact, I use R-Drive Image for backing up my backups. Additionally, if there’s failing media involved, R-Drive is definitely what I reach for. If you’re already familiar with R-Drive Image and only want details about version 7.2’s new features, skip down to the “What’s new….” section. R-Drive Image’s bread and butter is creating drive and partition images — i.e. copies of everything contained on a disk or one of its subdivisions, including boot records. It creates full (all data), incremental (all data changed since the last image), or differential (all data changed since the original full image) types. The resulting images can be in R-Drive Image’s own format as well as the more common Microsoft VHD/VHDX formats. Pricier versions support VMDK. The program will also verify said images, restore them whole, copy disk-to-disk (cloning), and mount its proprietary images as virtual disks that you can browse and recover individual files and folders using Windows Explorer. Note that Windows itself can mount VHD/VHDX formats, but R-Drive will mount those as well. R-Drive Image review: Our favorite backup gets even better | PCWorld
  2. Sony’s flagship smartphones, like the Sony Xperia 1 III, have always had their focus fixed firmly on photography purists. While Apple, Google, and Huawei were boosting shadows and creating night modes that made evenings look like mornings, Sony was sticking to its guns. If you’re taking a backlit photo with a Sony phone, it will produce a dramatic silhouette. If you’re shooting at midnight – it will look like nighttime. This purist photo processing has divided smartphone enthusiasts into two camps: the Sony camp and the 'everyone else' camp. It’s also resulted in Sony fans on social media being among the most vocal and impassioned, defending the Japanese tech brand to the digital death. The Xperia Pro-I was born against this backdrop. While Sony’s been piling on camera apps that have mirrored its compact and film camera lines for a couple of years now, starting with the Xperia 1, the Pro-I is the first to feature hardware that’s directly trickled down from Sony imaging; specifically, the sensor. Sony’s po[CENSORED]r RX100 line features a 1.0-type sensor. While this became synonymous with being one inch, on the Xperia Pro-I, the 1.0 type sensor doesn’t measure up. Instead, it uses a portion of the 1-inch sensor – 12MP of it to be precise. Sony Xperia Pro-I review: mirrorless mobile | TechRadar
  3. To tell you the truth, friends, I’m actually pretty busy working on something today. That said, I was asked to come and write something for all of you about the new follow-up to Luca Redwood’s 10000000 ($2.99). It’s called You Must Build A Boat ($2.99), and it’s every bit as compelling as the first game. Did you like the first game? Do you enjoy puzzle games? Do you like games? You’re going to want this one, trust me. The premise of the first game had you escaping from a prison by achieving a certain score. You had to eke out upgrade after upgrade, bumping up your multiplier in the hopes of making just a little bit farther each time. In this one, you’ve got nothing but freedom ahead of you. The only thing is, you need a boat. A little boat will do at first, but you’ll soon need a bigger one. To get the necessary resources, you’ll have to drop anchor and test yourself against the local wildlife. In doing so, you’ll collect gold, gather items, new crew members, and monsters, all of which will help you become stronger in one way or another. Once you’ve grabbed everything from one location, you’ll pull up the anchor and sail on. The game even keeps track of your time on each leg so that you can try to beat it again more quickly once you’ve finished. ‘You Must Build A Boat’ Review – You Must Buy This Game – TouchArcade
  4. Supermassive and Behaviour have each been instrumental in defining the genre over the past decade. The former's horror games have come as cinematic choose-your-own-adventure stories where the fates of multiple playable characters come down to your choices, often made in high-stress situations. Meanwhile, the latter blazed a trail now well-trodden: asymmetric multiplayer horror. Dead By Daylight's (DBD) Fortnite-like approach of swallowing up many major horror icons into one space has given it not just staying power, but a twisted Disneyland vibe. Now, with The Casting of Frank Stone, the pair combine forces to tell a Dead By Daylight origin story that will appeal most to fans of the PvP game, though I can say, as a casual DBD fan, I found it enjoyable on its own merits too, despite its issues. Frank Stone plays much like Supermassive's run of games that began with 2015's Until Dawn. It is a gameplay-light, movie-like experience that you get to direct, in a sense. You'll control several characters, form their relationships with others in the story, and, most excitingly, try to keep them alive through a story full of quick-time events (QTEs) and doomed choices that can get them killed off permanently. For me, this formula hasn't outstayed its welcome yet, and I'm not sure it ever will. It feels like the kind of game I would happily play each autumn for the rest of my life, even as the narrative merits vary by game. Historically, I've found that no Supermassive script truly stands up to scrutiny, and Frank Stone is no different in that regard. Because of the branching paths, sometimes you may see a scene that feels a bit off, like it better suits a choice I didn't make and never saw. 5. There’s been a fair bit of anticipation around the Meridian launch with some hoping it would finally fill the competitive void left by the Endeavour, while others have hoped it would take the Kodiaq head on with a comparable alternative, albeit with a more economical diesel heart. It would be fair to say that it seems to have a disappointed many prospective buyers & enthusiasts in some key aspects, including most notably: The engine specs which at some point were rumoured to be ~200 hp, combined with the less than perfect gearbox tune; and Third row space and usability. In this thread, I’ve tried to outline how I perceive the Meridian (with its imperfections as well as strengths) and why it made sense for my use case regardless. There is no doubt though that some compromises were made and ultimately this was about choosing a product based on compromises I could live with vs those I couldn’t accept. 6. If your mattress isn’t conducive to a comfortable night’s sleep, a mattress topper may help you transform the texture of your bed on a budget. “Mattress toppers allow you to change the characteristics of your sleep surface (think: make a firm mattress softer or a soft mattress firmer) with a much lower financial outlay than buying a new mattress,” says Tom Oddo, Doctor of Chiropractic, ergonomics specialist and strength coach. However, mattress toppers, which are layered between your mattress and your sheets, come in a wide variety of materials, firmness levels and thicknesses, and the right option for you depends on your primary sleep position and your preferences, according to our experts. To narrow down the best mattress toppers on the market, we interviewed two chiropractors, an orthopedic doctor and a spinal surgeon. Below, you’ll find their direct recommendations as well as general advice to keep in mind while shopping. Best Mattress Toppers of 2024, According to Experts | NBC Select
  7. A malnourished emperor penguin that was found more than 2,000 miles from its icy Antarctic home is being taken care of by a wildlife expert, the Australian government said Monday. The penguin was found on a po[CENSORED]r tourist beach in the town of Denmark in southwestern Australia on Nov. 1, according to the Western Australia state’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. “The penguin appeared to be malnourished and was removed from the beach to avoid potential threats,” it said in a statement. Authorities haven't said why the penguin had ventured some 2,200 miles north of the waters off the Antarctic coast. It was the first time that an emperor, the largest penguin species, was known to have reached Australia. Seabird rehabilitator Carol Biddulph is now caring for the animal. “The bird sort of turned at an angle and I could see its backbone protruding,” Biddulph said in a video interview. “I thought this bird is well undernourished, so that was a real consideration for bringing it in.” The team initially weighed the penguin at about 50 pounds, only around half of the weight of a healthy male. It stands at some 3 feet, 3 inches tall. It’s “such a privilege to be part of this bird’s journey,” Biddulph said. “Never in my wildest thoughts would I thought I’d ever have an emperor penguin to care for. It’s just, it’s just amazing.” At this stage, efforts remain focused on rehabilitating the penguin, the government department said. “Options around release are still being worked through.” Emperor penguin found malnourished on Australia tourist beach
  8. The race for Democratic Party chair has officially launched with a onetime Maryland governor and unsuccessful presidential candidate Martin O'Malley announcing a bid to take the reins. O'Malley, who has faded from the national scene of late, made a brief bid in 2016 to lead the Democratic National Committee only to withdraw his name days later. But a person with knowledge of O’Malley's plans said he has already connected with key party leaders who have "expressed interest in his vision for the Democratic Party’s future." He is expected over the next several weeks to lay out the key tenets to his vision for the party. That includes communicating with Americans "not through fear" but in providing a better future. O'Malley, who is most recently the commissioner to the Social Security Administration, is expected to lean on his record as a mayor, governor and chair of the Democratic Governors Association. And he's expected to express support for a 50-state commitment, meaning that the DNC would help maintain party infrastructure across the country, not just in battleground states. That's a position several contenders are expected to take. While O'Malley formally entered the fray, which was first reported by the New York Times, plenty of other names were swirling even before the Nov. 5 election. The contest comes as former DNC Chair Jaime Harrison is leaving his post. Harrison is expected to make more public comments in coming weeks about how the party should move forward. One of the people most often cited in Democratic circles as a possibility for DNC chair is Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler. Wikler is known as a prodigious fundraiser who gained the respect from Republicans and Democrats alike and has served as an omnipresent cable TV voice for the left in the last several major national and local elections. “Ben is seriously considering a run,” a person with knowledge of Wikler’s thinking told NBC News. Several DNC members privately said they were already backing Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin. Martin has not formally announced he would run for the position but is "definitely considering it," he told NBC News. Martin said he firmly believes the party should continue building in all 50 state parties. "A lot of folks are calling me and encouraging me to run," Martin said. "I would just say, I've had lots of good conversations. It’s a lot to consider." DNC Chair race officially takes flight with its first candidate: Martin O'Malley
  9. What began as violent clashes between locals and Israeli soccer fans has spiraled into a clash of identities in the Netherlands, leaving many feeling their place in society is precarious, their belonging conditional, and their voices drowned out in a tide of blame. The resignation of a Moroccan-born minister has added yet more fuel to a fire that has exposed deep racial and religious divides from the streets to the Cabinet office, bringing the government to the brink of crisis. Deputy finance minister Nora Achahbar quit the cabinet Friday in protest after hearing alleged racist remarks during a closed-door Dutch cabinet meeting. Amsterdam was gripped by violence this month surrounding a match between Dutch team Ajax and the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv. According to officials, the violence included “rioters who actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them,” sending five to hospital, and inflammatory and violent actions by some of the Israeli fans, who shouted phrases like “Death to the Arabs” and “Let the IDF win. We will f--- the Arabs.” The episode spread fear in the Jewish community — and revealed long-simmering frustrations over anti-Muslim rhetoric and Islamophobia in the Netherlands. In statements made after the attacks, Geert Wilders — whose anti-Islam, anti-immigrant Freedom party (PVV) won the most seats in Dutch elections a year ago — blamed “Moroccans who want to destroy Jews,” and called for the perpetrators to be prosecuted “for terrorism, lose their passports and be kicked out of the country.” Amsterdam violence exposes anti-immigrant Islamophobia in the Netherlands
  10. The New York Giants are benching Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With the Giants struggling at 2-8 and Jones due $23 million next year if he gets injured, the decision made sense both on the field and off it. New York had lost five straight games entering its Week 11 bye. Through 10 games this season, the former first-round pick has 2,070 passing yards with 10 total touchdowns and seven interceptions. In six years with the Giants, Jones has a 24-44-1 record with one postseason appearance in 2022 — his only winning season. DeVito, meanwhile, returns to the field after bursting onto the scene as a hometown favorite last season. The New Jersey native made six starts as a rookie in place of the injured Jones in 2023, totaling eight touchdowns and three interceptions while going 3-3. Veteran quarterback Drew Lock signed a one-year deal with the Giants in the offseason and had been the backup through 11 weeks. Instead, the team is opting for youth and experience in Brian Daboll’s offense by going with DeVito. DeVito and the Giants will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, with both teams coming off their bye week. Giants bench Daniel Jones with Tommy DeVito taking over as starting QB
