Since the rise of the internet, we've seen a Wild West for multimedia content creators: Comics lost the constricting borders of a paper's edge and became webcomics; Radio shows lost their set air dates and became podcasts. Even newspapers got in on the fun by losing their advertisers and becoming endangered (too soon?). My point is: There's no better time to dabble in a new medium. You can post your results to the internet and receive immediate feedback. And if you have a friend who loves trying out new multimedia creative projects, the assortment of unique and useful tech on this list are just the thing to make for a fascinating last-minute holiday gift. This bluetooth head-mounted microphone array is designed to record and play back 3D audio. How can audio be 3D? You'll need to listen to 3D (or binaural) audio through a headset in order to experience the effect — here's an example — but it works by playing audio exactly as if it had already bounced off of your inner ear on the way to your ear drum. The final effect fools your brain into thinking the audio source is in the room with you to your left, to your right, or even directly behind you, all while actually being piped directly into your ear from a headset. Chargeable through a mini USB port on the left ear bud, the Hookverse headset has an over-ear hook and nestles nicely into your ears. It captures audio wirelessly if you're using the free Hooke Audio mobile app, and comes with a cord to let you record on any device without the app as well. The audio recording quality, while not as great as studio-grade equipment, certainly gives you the 3D audio effect that you're looking for far better than any other headset available at the same price point. It's a fun way to spice up your next Snapchat video, to create a truly immersive podcast, or for any of your multimedia needs. This online course can walk you through the concepts behind game development and any related technologies. Classes will detail subjects including 3D models and how to make them, 2D texture maps, and a variety of different game engines. Given the high demand for game developers with the most recent skillsets — and the low demand for those without — picking up the basics makes sense as the starting point for a career in video games, and there's no cheaper method than this course. Spire's portable recording studio helps any aspiring artists and soundmixers collaborate with ease — and without renting out a recording studio. The hardware allows you to record yourself playing instruments and singing anywhere, but the collaboration option is worth highlighting: Projects can be exported from one device to another, allowing someone to add a new track to the same project before sending it back and allowing you to import the collaboration once more. You can read a whole lot more about the device at our earlier long-form review, but for anyone who loves recording and tweaking their own compositions, this portable studio will be a lot of fun. Here's one for the outdoorsy creatives: A speaker to tote around anywhere you go. It's compact, water-resistant, and comes wrapped in a high-quality silicon case. You'll get about 8.5 hours with each charge, so you can use it to add a soundtrack to your day-long hike up the nearest mountain or excursion to the beach. It connects to your phone or your tablet through Bluetooth, allowing you to keep your cred as a music tastemaker anywhere you want. https://tech.co/news/gift-guide-2017-gadgets-and-gear-for-multimedia-lovers-2017-12

[Hardware] Technology to allow library to be open unstaffed
GL HERO SHIMA posted a topic in Hardware
New technology is to be installed at libraries in Worcestershire so they can be open even when no staff are on duty. Malvern Library is one of a number around the county being brought into the council's Libraries Unlocked scheme. The project allows library members to access the buildings during unstaffed periods, although critics say the downside is fewer staffed hours. The county council said feedback from Droitwich and Stourport libraries, which piloted the scheme, had been positive. Libraries Unlocked is now being rolled out to Great Malvern as well as Evesham, Redditch, Kidderminster, Wythall, Pershore, Bromsgrove, Hagley, Alvechurch, Rubery, and Warndon and St John’s libraries in Worcester. But new software and hardware is needed in the libraries in order for the scheme to work. In Malvern’s case, this has meant applying for listed building consent as the library is a Grade II listed building. Work includes the installation of new CCTV cameras and speakers, trunking and cabling infrastructure, and a new entry system that will require users to scan their library card and enter a PIN in order to access the building during unstaffed hours. “Library staff can determine the opening and closing times of the unstaffed periods in the administration software,” planning documents said. “If the library is closed and then opens unstaffed, all the lights and computers will come on automatically. “They will remain on until approaching the end of the unstaffed period when an announcement is made to inform anybody in the library that the library will be closing soon." The documents said subsequent announcements would be made to encourage anybody in the building to vacate the library. When closing time is reached, all the lights would go out, all computers would shut down, and the intruder alarm would be set. District planners this week approved the plans for the library, which was opened in 1906 and is home to the Worcestershire Hub customer service centre and Malvern Registration Services. It also has Great Malvern’s war memorial within its grounds. This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpv0k9x9yzno -

Dragon's Dogma 2 is a game of bizarre mechanical complexities—it's at times frustrating, baffling, and weird, but that also gives it a unique flavour. The game isn't that interested in being convenient, but it is interested in leaving you asking what the hell just happened while you're surrounded by corpses. I'm about to spoil how, but you may want to read on if you're scared of calamity. In short, the Dragonsplague is an illness your pawns can contract after fighting a dragon or, according to the mechanic's tutorial tip, by coming into contact with an infected pawn. If you lived through the horrors of WoW's Corrupted Blood plague, you might be getting flashbacks, and with very good reason—the elimination of a whole town's worth of NPCs is a genuine option. Infected pawns will eventually transform into a shadowy dragon and obliterate the town you're sleeping in, killing everything, even quest-essential characters. This is, ah, bad, because Dragon's Dogma 2 is a game in which you only get one save and can not, under any circumstances, miss your chance to blow. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/dragons-dogma-2-players-are-hurling-their-pawns-into-the-briny-depths-to-purge-dragonsplague-a-mechanic-so-deadly-and-unique-i-dont-want-to-spoil-it-in-a-headline/

Last week, Rachel Reeves announced that a Labour government would reinstate climate change as a policy priority for the Bank of England (something NEF has advocated for and would warmly welcome!). While Labour has watered down its flagship £28bn green investment pledge, by prioritising green finance, they could still strive to meet the goals of their Green Prosperity Plan. Labour’s Financing Growth review contained some promising ideas to increase private finance for the green transition. However, their policies will need to go further if they want to fulfil their missions to cut energy bills for good, make the UK energy secure, improve living standards, generate one million good jobs, and tackle the climate crisis. Reinstating climate change as a policy priority for the Bank of England is the first and most obvious action the next government should take. The Bank has a huge amount of power in the financial system, both through monetary policy and as a regulator. In 2023 Jeremy Hunt decided to remove climate change as a policy priority for the Bank, which has already had harmful consequences. Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank, stated that funding for climate research and policy development has now been reduced. Putting climate change back on the priority list would direct the Bank to develop measures to help bring the financial system into line with net zero (without compromising its primary mandates to control inflation and ensure financial stability). One such policy is NEF’s proposed green term funding scheme. This would bring down energy bills, improve energy security, and help fight climate change. In the scheme, the Bank of England would offer a lower interest rate to commercial banks to fund loans to renewable energy and retrofit projects, provided the banks pass on the rate reduction to their customers. A renewables company could then access a cheaper loan to build a windfarm, or a homeowner could access a cheaper loan to install a heat pump, for example. This would lead to more cheap renewable energy produced in the UK and less reliance on global gas markets. Similar policies are already in operation in Japan and China, and the Bank of Korea and senior figures at the ECB have spoken out in favour of such schemes. “Putting climate change back on the priority list would direct the Bank to develop measures to help bring the financial system into line with net zero.” The next government should also explicitly encourage the Bank to update its collateral framework and supervisory measures, so that investments in fossil fuels and other harmful activities are penalised rather than encouraged. The European Central Bank has made progress in these areas, correctly identifying that the mismanagement of climate risks poses a danger to financial stability (although there are still notable shortcomings to the ECB’s policies). If Labour wants the UK to become a global green finance capital, the Bank of England has a lot of catching up to do. Labour’s financial services review, Financing Growth, successfully identifies other areas where interventions could remove bottlenecks to green investment and speed up the transition. These include unblocking the publication of the UK’s Green Taxonomy, that will define what qualifies as an environmentally sustainable investment. This is a necessary measure to enable many other green finance policies. In particular, the report recognises that buildings retrofit (making our homes and workplaces more energy efficient) is an area where the market is currently failing to deliver. The proposed introduction of property-linked financing (PLF), where loans for green projects are tied to the property rather than the owner, is a promising idea that could help stimulate demand. The Green Finance Institute estimate that PLF could increase green investment by £52 – 70bn. Unfortunately, there are areas of Labour’s review where their approach falls far short of what is required to achieve the net zero transition. To genuinely shift the dial on green finance, the next government also needs to level up the UK’s state-owned financial institutions (SOFIs), such as the UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB) and the British Business Bank (BBB). A barrier to this is the UK’s current measure of national debt, which is different from most other countries in the world, including across the EU. This difference effectively prevents the UK’s SOFIs from fulfilling their potential as national investment banks. Meanwhile, other countries have state-owned banks able to provide huge amounts of funding for green development, for example the KfW in Germany. Switching our debt-measure to the international standard would empower our SOFIs to raise their own money and power up their investments. For example, the British Business Bank could then offer significant financial support to help UK businesses to decarbonise. Ultimately, greening finance can’t fully compensate for insufficient government investment. Fiscal policy still has a crucial role to play, and Labour should reinstate its full green investment pledge. However, Labour can still make some progress on its Green Prosperity Plan by targeting green finance measures to harness the power of private investment. Reeves’ announcement on the Bank of England is a good start, but there’s much further to go. https://neweconomics.org/2024/03/what-do-labours-green-finance-plans-mean-for-the-climate

Nissan plans to launch seven new models in North America and refresh 78 percent of its U.S. lineup by 2026. Nissan's three-year business plan will also see 30 new models launched around the globe, with a nearly even mix of electric and gas-fed powertrains. Nissan also aims to greatly reduce the price of its next-gen EVs by sharing a variety of development costs; it expects EV and ICE models to cost the same by 2030. Nissan is looking towards the future with a new three-year business plan that involves launching seven new models in North America. The company says it will also refresh 78 percent of its existing U.S. lineup during that time as it prepares for more electric vehicles. In the United States, Nissan plans to invest $200 million in its integrated customer experience too. That's part of its goal to increase North American sales by 330,000 units in 2026 compared with 2023. Nissan hasn't yet revealed the powertrains of the U.S.-bound vehicles. However, we know that at least some of them will be electrified, as Nissan plans to launch plug-in-hybrid models and a system called e-Power. The latter powertrain features a gas engine that acts as a generator and powers the electric motor(s), which alone will drive the wheels. As things currently stand, the company has no hybrid or plug-in-hybrid options in the United States. Over the next three years, Nissan also plans to launch 30 new models around the globe, with 16 being electrified and 14 having internal-combustion engines. With those new vehicles taken into account, the brand is planning for electrified vehicles to account for 40 percent of global sales by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030. For its next generation of electric vehicles, Nissan plans to significantly reduce the price. The company says it aims to cut costs of those next-gen EVs by 30 percent compared with the current Nissan Ariya by sharing a variety development costs. Using that approach, production is slated to begin in 2027, with the company planning to achieve pricing parity between its EVs and ICE cars by 2030. Nissan says its two-part plan is intended to "drive value and strengthen competitiveness." It will also focus on a broad product offensive, a ramped-up electrification effort, new engineering and manufacturing approaches, and the utilization of strategic partnerships to improve global sales. Globally, the company plans for 53 percent of its new models released in the next three years to be electrified, while 47 percent will be gas-powered. Nissan says its plan shows a clear path to the company's future. "It illustrates our continuous progression and ability to navigate changing market conditions," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. "This plan will enable us to go further and faster in driving value and competitiveness. Faced with extreme market volatility, Nissan is taking decisive actions guided by the new plan to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.” https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60294795/nissan-seven-new-models-refreshed-us-lineup-2026/

Christine Igot lives with her family in a small seaside community. After retiring from her career as a French teacher, she uses her voice to make booming, informative and upbeat declarations Ammar Kalia Mon 25 Mar 2024 07.00 GMT Share In May 2022, Christine Igot donned a feathered hat, white ruff and multicoloured tabard in the middle of the market square in her home town of Annapolis Royal, Canada. “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!” she shouted while ringing a bell at a bemused crowd. “My gracious lords and ladies, wily judges, esteemed citizens and visitors, the town of Annapolis Royal greets you, along with any layabouts, ne’er-do-wells and scallywags, who are most certainly present!” The retired French teacher, who was 60 at the time, was taking part in her first “cry-off”, where she was competing against another hopeful for the role of town crier. “It’s a tradition that dates back to the medieval era, when town criers would read the news to the public,” Igot says. “Now, it’s like being an ambassador for a local community. Once a week, you stand in the town square and announce any goings-on. Except it’s all good news.” https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/25/a-new-start-after-60-i-was-terribly-sad-after-losing-my-mother-then-i-started-spreading-good-news

Hundreds of animals were injured because of litter between 2020 and 2023, new figures from the RSPCA show. The charity said there were 594 call outs in Devon and 300 in Cornwall for animals "affected by litter". Devon's figure is the second highest in England and Wales, while Cornwall's is 10th highest, according to the charity. It has led to the RSPCA to urge people to support an anti-littering campaign being run by Keep Britain Tidy. The charity said it was urging people to "create a better world for every animal" by getting involved with the Great British Spring Clean running from 15 to 31 March. Examples of litter-related incidents the RSPCA was called out to in Devon include a swan having a fishing hook in its bill last year near the Totnes Weir Hydro power plant on the River Dart. Another incident involved a great black backed gull nearly requiring a leg amputation after it got caught on a fishing line in Saltash. These incidents led to calls from the charity to make sure people do not discard litter along river banks. "Most anglers are very responsible when disposing of their litter, but it only takes one piece of snagged line to be left in a tree or dropped near the water to endanger the life of an animal," the RSPCA said. Greater London had the most incidents reported over the four year period with 1,439. After Devon, Kent had the third most reported incidents with 526 while Greater Manchester and West Midlands were fourth and fifth respectively with 500 and 437. RSPCA anti-litter campaigns manager Carrie Stones said thousands of the incidents would be "avoidable" if litter had been disposed of and urged the public to contact the charity if they witness an incident. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-devon-68544131

Brazil winger Vinicius Jr says he feels "less and less" like playing football because of the repeated racist abuse he has suffered. Last season there were 10 such incidents against the 23-year-old reported to prosecutors by La Liga. During an emotional news conference on Monday, Vinicius added he would not be forced to leave Real Madrid and Spain and let racism win. However, he said he was finding it "hard to move forward" from the abuse. Brazil face Spain in an international friendly at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on Tuesday as part of an anti-racism campaign under the slogan 'One skin'. Vinicius said: "It never crossed my mind [to leave Spain] because if I leave Spain I give the racists exactly what they want. "I will stay because that way the racists can continue to see my face more and more. "I'm a bold player, I play for Real Madrid and we win a lot of titles and that doesn't sit well with a lot of people. "I just want to play football but it's hard to move forward; I feel less and less like playing." Last week, Real filed a complaint against referee Juan Martinez Munuera, who took charge of their win at Osasuna, for omitting alleged racist abuse towards Vinicius from his match report. Osasuna denied there were any racist chants from their fans. Vinicius has endured numerous instances of racist abuse in recent seasons. They include Real's derby win away over Atletico in September 2022, when Atletico condemned "unacceptable" chants by a "minority" of fans towards Vinicius outside their stadium before the game. Last June, four men were fined 60,001 euros (£51,700) and given a two-year stadium ban for hanging an effigy of Vinicius near Real's training ground in January 2023. Three other people were fined 5,000 euros (£4,300) and banned for one year for making racist gestures during Real's game at Valencia last May. This season there have been reports of racist abuse towards Vinicius as Real played at Sevilla in October, at Barcelona the following week and at Valencia earlier this month. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68660177

UN security council passes resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza after US abstains For the first time the UN security council has voted for a call for a ceasefire in Gaza, after the US abstained, rather than using its veto as it has done on previous occasions. Russia and China have also previously vetoed texts. The resolution that passed was written by the 10 elected members to the council, and proposed in the chamber by Mozambique’s representative. Russia attempted to amend the text by restoring it to an earlier draft which included the word “permanent”, but the bid failed. 14 members of the UN security council voted for the resolution, while the US abstained. Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier threatened to cancel a planned delegation to Washington if the US did not exercise its veto An Israeli minister, Gideon Saar, has resigned from Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency unity government, citing the fact that he was not included in the country’s highest-level war cabinet. Saar joined the unity government along with several other members of the opposition after the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October. His departure, reported by Reuters, is not expected to affect the stability of Netanyahu’s government, which still controls a clear majority in parliament. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/mar/25/israel-gaza-live-unrwa-aid-north-gaza-un-security-council-vote-ceasefire-middle-east-latest

If you've ever worked in an office, you're likely familiar with the human resources department. It deals with benefits, compensation, onboarding, and a wide range of other functions related to employee wellbeing. HR software, in turn, is the digital resource used by these professionals to better manage and optimize the operations associated with the human resources (HR) team. As with any business tool, the best HR software can streamline and organize your operations, saving you time, money, and headaches when it comes to managing your employees. In this guide, you'll learn about what HR software is, how it can help your business, what kind of features you can expect, and how to choose the right option for your business. What Is HR Software? Human Resources (HR) software is an online tool used by businesses to track, manage, and optimize employee benefits, time-off requests, compensation, and other human resources tasks. It's typically used by HR professionals, as well as employees, so that everyone has a comprehensive way to stay up to date on all of these important employee management needs. The HR industry has not always been so lucky as to have these kinds of platforms available to businesses. Vacation requests, compensation concerns, and other HR issues had to be handled in-person, or worse, over email with little to no organization to speak of. Some businesses still operate this way, which further demonstrates how valuable HR software can be. Additionally, if using HR software is too labor-intensive for you and your team – for example, when you don't yet have your own in-house HR manager – you can always outsource the department to a third-party HR company. However, this is likely going to cost quite a bit more and won't necessarily provide the same in-house control and functionality you'd get with HR software. https://tech.co/hr-software/what-is-hr-software

Last night, Amazon unveiled the latest in its line of Alexa-powered devices. From a wall clock to a power point to a microwave, all of these voice activated products are designed to respond to your spoken whims and desires – plus integrate the Amazon infrastructure furthermore into your daily routine, naturally. The lineup was eclectic, to say the least. While some old favorites have been updated – the Echo range has been revised with better speakers – there were also some rather left-field choices. A voice activated microwave doesn't seem like an obvious must-have, while Amazon also revealed a wall clock that can be linked to your existing Alexa devices. It seems that Amazon won't rest until everything in your home can be activated with a few key commands. We take a look at the lineup. Sorry, I mean ‘Alexa. Show me the lineup'. Latest Alexa Products AmazonBasics Microwave Echo Auto Echo Wall Clock Echo Dot and Plus Echo Show Echo Input Echo Sub Echo Link and Amp Echo Smart Plug AmazonBasics Microwave What does it do? The AmazonBasics range is essentially Amazon's value line of products. The name is usually assigned to products such as USB cables or pens So, an Alexa-enabled microwave is something of a surprise, to say the least. The Microwave doesn't have Alexa functionality built-in. Instead, it communicates with your existing Echo device. Instead of having to push multiple pesky buttons (what a drag), you can now just push the Alexa button and tell the microwave to heat up your meal for one (quite how the meal got into the microwave without you being close enough to just hit the on-button is another matter). In its advertising, Amazon makes a big deal about the fact ‘you don't have to say Alexa' to activate the microwave. Arguably, pushing a button to order a voice command seems somewhat backwards, especially when the other buttons to do the job the old fashioned way are right there. It also has a dedicated popcorn button. No, it really does. The folk at Amazon clearly like popcorn, because the microwave will automatically detect when you're running out and reorder more popcorn for you. Is it worth it? While there's a novelty value in ordering a machine to cook your dinner, like some sort of tyrannical king or 1950's husband, it does seem exceptionally lazy. However, with its low price point and sheer entertainment value, there are bound to be plenty of interested amateur chefs and hardcore popcorn enthusiasts. https://tech.co/news/amazon-new-alexa-echo-auto-dot-show-microwave-2018-09

Toast is a well-respected, restaurant-specific POS system with a great breadth of useful business features and a reasonable price tag to match. In fact, with a near-perfect research score of 4.9/5 for restaurant features, Toast has some of the most advanced capabilities of any POS we've reviewed. However, while Toast can be an asset to businesses with the right hardware and is one of the best restaurant POS systems, it's currently only compatible with Android devices. This unfortunately means it's a POS that is inaccessible to businesses that run on iOS technology. With no live chat or email options available, Toast scored significantly low for help and support, too, suggesting that its options may not be able to meet the needs of all food businesses. There's a lot to discuss when it comes to this restaurant POS though. Scroll down to see how its features, hardware packages, and price points measure up.
