  8. Good news for those of still fighting the good fight, still holding aloft the proud banner of truth and justice, still committed to struggle for what's right instead of what's simply po[CENSORED]r. Five years after it was unceremoniously yanked from sale, Alpha Protocol is back via GOG. If you're of stout heart and righteous spirit, you'll already know that Alpha Protocol is a straight-up banger, an Obsidian RPG set in the high-stakes world of modern international espionage rather than a more familiar fantasy or sci-fi setting. Yes, okay, it was deeply flawed—the game was either a cakewalk or surreally difficult depending on which skills you chose to specialise in—but it made up for it with a robust system of choice and consequence: How you chose to behave really mattered in a way few games have managed since. But thrilled as I am that Alpha Protocol is finally back in stores (or one store, anyway), it's not all that's going on here. In a chat with GOG's Zuzanna Rybacka, the company told me it considered Alpha Protocol a key part of the process of "going back to the roots: the good old games." GOG announced it was returning to its roots as the internet's premier destination for DRM-free stone-cold classics back in 2022, but I get the impression that CD Projekt is keen to start ramping that return up now that Alpha Protocol's "very long release" (the company told me bringing the game back to life has taken longer than usual: around half a year) has hit its climax. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/5-years-after-it-was-yanked-off-stores-gogs-bringing-underrated-spy-rpg-alpha-protocol-in-from-the-cold-with-fewer-crashes-and-new-achievements/
  9. The Swiss National Bank on Thursday surprised the market with a decision to lower its main policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1.5%, saying national inflation is likely to stay below 2% for the foreseeable future. Economists polled by Reuters had expected the Swiss central bank to hold rates at 1.75%. “For some months now, inflation has been back below 2% and thus in the range the SNB equates with price stability. According to the new forecast, inflation is also likely to remain in this range over the next few years,” the bank said. Swiss inflation continued to fall in February, hitting 1.2%. The SNB also reduced its annual inflation forecasts. The bank now sees average inflation reaching 1.4% in 2024, down from its 1.9% estimate in December, and 1.2% for 2025, trimmed from the previous 1.6% estimate. Its first forecast for 2026 puts average inflation at 1.1% over the period. Following the announcement, analysts at Capital Economics said they expect two more SNB rate cuts over the course of this year, “with the Bank sounding more dovish and inflation likely to undershoot its forecasts.” “As it happens, we think inflation will come in even lower than the new SNB forecasts imply and remain around the current level of 1.2% before falling to below 1.0% next year. Accordingly, we forecast the SNB to cut rates at the September and December meetings taking the policy rate to 1%, where we think it will remain throughout 2025 and 2026,” Capital Economics analysts said in a note. The September meeting is likely to be the last under the stewardship of SNB Chairman Thomas Jordan, who will step down at the end of that month after 12 years at the helm. The SNB said Swiss economic growth is “likely to remain modest in the coming quarters,” with the GDP poised to expand by roughly 1% this year. “Our forecast for Switzerland, as for the global economy, is subject to significant uncertainty. The main risk is weaker economic activity abroad. Momentum on the mortgage and real estate markets has weakened noticeably in recent quarters,” the SNB said. “However, the vulnerabilities in these markets remain.” On a macro level, the SNB flagged “moderate” global economic growth in the coming quarters, along with likely falls in inflation partly thanks to restrictive monetary policy strategies. It nevertheless acknowledged “significant risks” and geopolitical tensions that could cloud the international economic horizon. First to blink Switzerland is the first advanced economy to cut interest rates following a prolonged period of high inflationary pressures, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on global trade and Russia’s war in Ukraine. Switzerland was also affected by jitters in the banking space last year, when the government stepped in to facilitate UBS’ takeover of fallen rival Credit Suisse. The Swiss National Bank’s announcement comes ahead of a monetary policy decision by the Bank of England, which is broadly expected to leave its monetary policy unchanged despite declines in inflation. Also on Thursday, Norway’s central bank refused to blink, holding rates steady at 4.5%. It comes after the U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday held rates steady following its March meeting and reiterated its expectations for three rate cuts in 2024. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/21/switzerland-becomes-first-major-economy-to-cut-interest-rates-in-surprise-move.html
  10. Ford is launching another off-roading school for its owners, this time for buyers of the 2024 Ranger Raptor pickup truck. Located at the Ford Performance School in Tooele Valley, Utah, the course is free to owners of the new truck and starts in June. The curriculum includes activities such as rock crawling and Baja runs, climbing, side-hilling, descending, and braking. Ford will provide trucks and safety gear for the event. Modern track-attack cars and off-roading trucks are like precision weapons with limits that not every customer is necessarily equipped to reach. Because of that, some automakers offer driving schools to help customers who buy their performance vehicles gain the necessary skills to achieve those limits safely. Ford is one of those automakers, and it's just announced another off-roading school for its owners, this time for owners of the 2024 Ranger Raptor pickup. The course is called the Ranger Raptor Assault School, and it joins Ford's other schools like the nationwide Bronco Off-Roadeo courses, Mustang Track Attacks, and the similarly named F-150 Raptor Assault School. The new course launches in June at the Ford Performance School in Tooele Valley, Utah. Enrollment is exclusive to owners of the 2024 Ranger Raptor, and the program cost is baked into the cost of buying your truck, so enrollment is definitely worth consideration. In Ford Performance general manager Will Ford's words, “Our goal is for owners, whether novices or off-road veterans, to experience the full capability of Ranger Raptor and get a true understanding of the passion and attention to detail that Ford engineers put into developing it." The one-day course's curriculum was developed with the input of Ford Performance engineers. Along with classroom instruction, there's hands-on driving to help develop skills and confidence with skills like rock crawling and Baja runs, climbing, side-hilling, descending, and braking. Plus, Ford supplies trucks, safety gear, tires, and fuel for both you and the trucks; owners are only on the hook for travel and lodging. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60254974/ford-ranger-raptor-school-launched/

  12. More wild animals should be culled to control their numbers, according to a Conservative MP. Richard Drax, MP for South Dorset, has dismissed calls by conservation groups to end the badger cull, which aims to curb bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cows. Speaking at a debate on farming in the House of Commons, he instead suggested more animals, such as deer and foxes, should also be culled as they have no natural predators in the UK. The government refused to comment. The badger cull started in Gloucestershire in 2013 and spread to Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Dorset. More than 210,000 badgers have been culled so far, the Badger Trust said. Cattle spread the respiratory infection to each other, but they can also catch it from badgers - so they are killed as well. 'Pure common sense' Mr Drax said bTB was a "major problem" in the South West, telling the Commons: "Culling has proved to work, and can I suggest that rather than talking about stopping culling on badgers and to introduce some other form, that all wild animals have to be culled. "Because if they don't their health deteriorates. They don't have any predators in today's world. Foxes, deer, badgers. We don't want to wipe them out, we just simply want them controlled. "This is just pure common sense," he added. Figures showed the number of cattle with bTB going for slaughter in England in 2022-23 was 20,228 - a 24% fall on the previous year and the lowest number since 2008. A Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) spokesperson told the BBC the government was hoping to eradicate bTB in England by 2038. They said it was moving to the next phase of its long-term strategy, which would focus on wider-scale badger vaccination - but added culling would remain an option "where epidemiological assessment indicates that it is needed". 13. Former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho must serve a nine-year rape sentence in his home country of Brazil, a court has ruled. Robinho, 40, was found guilty by an Italian court in 2017 of taking part in the 2013 gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman. He has been living in Brazil, which does not extradite its nationals. Judges in Brasilia ruled on Wednesday that he should serve his sentence in Brazil following a request from Italy. He will remain free pending a possible appeal against the ruling, lawyers said. The former Brazil international, who has 100 caps for his country, was playing for AC Milan at the time of the crime. After being found guilty he lost an appeal in 2020 before Italy's highest court upheld his sentence in 2022. Italian prosecutors then issued an international arrest warrant for him. The footballer, who spent two years with Manchester City, told a Brazilian network on Sunday that the sex had been "consensual". Robinho won two La Liga titles in four seasons at Real Madrid, before joining City for a then-British record fee of £32.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008 - also Sheikh Mansour's first day as owner of the Premier League club. After two seasons he joined AC Milan, where he spent the next five years before moving to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande and returning to Brazil with Atletico Mineiro. 14. Satellite images show 35% of Gaza's building destroyed, UN says Satellite images analysed by the UN’s Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) show that 35% of the Gaza Strip’s buildings have been destroyed or damaged since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict, reports Reuters. In its assessment, UNOSAT used high-resolution satellite images collected on 29 February and compared them with images taken before and after the start of the latest conflict. It found that 35% of all buildings in the Gaza Strip – 88,868 structures – had been damaged or destroyed. Among these, it identified 31,198 structures as destroyed, 16,908 as severely damaged, and 40,762 as moderately damaged. This represents an increase of nearly 20,000 damaged structures compared to the previous assessment it did based on images taken in January that showed 30% of all buildings had been damaged or destroyed, UNOSAT said. “The governorates of Khan Younis and Gaza have experienced the most significant rise in damage, with Khan Younis seeing 12,279 additional damaged structures and Gaza experiencing 2,010,” UNOSAT said. Khan Younis City has been hit “particularly hard”, it said, with 6,663 newly destroyed structures. US secretary of state Antony Blinken on Thursday discussed with Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the negotiations to secure an immediate ceasefire for at least six weeks and the release of all hostages kidnapped by Hamas, state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said. Blinken is in Egypt after visiting Saudi Arabia a day earlier, as part of his latest Middle East tour. He also discussed with Sisi the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel, reports Reuters. A merchant vessel reported shots from a skiff approximately 109 nautical miles south of Yemen’s Nishtun, British security firm Ambrey said on Thursday, reports Reuters. Four armed people on a skiff approached the vessel and reportedly shot at the merchant vessel, and a private armed security team returned fire, Ambrey added. The vessel reportedly increased speed and was no longer under threat by the skiff, with no damage or injuries reported, Ambrey said. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported the same incident on Thursday. Yemen’s Houthis have threatened to expand their operations against shipping to the Indian Ocean region. Somali pirates also operate in the Indian Ocean region, taking advantage of the distraction provided by Houthi strikes to the north, with more than 20 attempted hijackings since November, according to five industry representatives say Reuters. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/mar/21/middle-east-crisis-live-israel-gaza-benjamin-netanyahu-ceasefire-proposal-antony-blinken-latest-news-updates

  19. After witnessing the deadly attack, I struggled with daily life and lost my passion for running. At the Frankfurt marathon, six months later, the emotional toll caught up with me Marco Seitelmann Wed 20 Mar 2024 07.00 GMT Share It was late 2013, six months after I had run the Boston marathon – the year two men detonated two bombs near the finish line, killing three people and injuring hundreds. Back in Germany, my home country, I had been struggling with my mental health for months, but I was determined to complete another marathon and maybe make it back to Boston. I had signed up for that month’s Frankfurt marathon, but told nobody except Christina, my therapist. I went to the starting line only a couple of minutes before the race started. For the first half or so, I felt good. The sun was shining. My mind was empty and I was running faster than ever. Then I felt a breakdown coming on. I could no longer run. I walked the rest of the way, crying. People kept stopping to ask if I needed help, or to comfort me. I knew their intentions were good, but I felt as if I was in a different world. All I could think was: why am I here, running, when others were killed and many more had been injured and could never run again?
