  6. After promising that its software would shield internet users from third-party tracking, Avast allegedly harvested and sold customers' online browsing data, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The maker of antivirus software deceived customers by claiming it would protect their privacy, while not making clear it would collect and sell their "detailed, re-identifiable browsing data," the agency announced Thursday. "Avast promised users that its products would protect the privacy of their browsing data but delivered the opposite," Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement. "Avast's bait-and-switch surveillance tactics compromised consumers' privacy and broke the law." U.K.-based Avast, through a Czech subsidiary, from 2014 to January 2020 stored and sold customer data collected through browser extensions and antivirus software installed on computers and mobile devices, according to the FTC's complaint. That information, culled from users' online searches and the websites they visited, included their religious beliefs, health concerns, political leanings, location and financial status, and was sold to more than 100 third parties through an Avast subsidiary called Jumpshot, according to the agency. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ftc-avast-browsing-data-privacy/?intcid=CNM-00-10abd1h
  7. AI advancement is clearly a double-edged sword, with an alarming percentage of businesses reporting that they have faced security breaches of their AI systems. Platforms like ChatGPT have made life a lot easier for businesses around the world. The generative AI technology can do everything from creating content and scheduling meetings to generating images and developing code. Unfortunately, it's not all peaches and cream when it comes to AI, with the technology representing an incredibly vulnerable system that could lead to devastating breaches. AI Security Breaches on the Rise According to a recent study from HiddenLayer — titled the AI Threat Landscape Report 2024 — AI security breaches are becoming a serious problem in the industry. The survey showed that 77% of businesses reported a breach to their AI in the lastThat number is frustratingly high when you consider how much of a concern it is for business owners around the world. The study found that 97% of IT leaders prioritize securing AI systems and 94% have an allocated budget for AI security in 2024. Unfortunately, prioritization and funding don't necessarily lead to a secure system. In fact, the report found that only 61% of IT leaders are confident that the budget allocated to them will be enough to stop hackers in their tracks. How Secure Is AI? Given all the news around AI and its adoption into the business world, this feels like a question that should've been asked a long time ago. Still, with more and more technology rolling out, the query remains: Is AI actually secure? Well, if you ask the founder and CEO of HiddenLayer, who produced the study, it's safe to say there is room for improvement. “Artificial intelligence is, by a wide margin, the most vulnerable technology ever to be deployed in production systems. It’s vulnerable at a code level, during training and development, post-deployment, over networks, via generative outputs, and more.” – Chris “Tito” Sestito, founder and CEO of HiddenLayer The other problem that arises with AI is when you realize just how much data is being used and reused in these systems, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals to get their hands on. Because if they can hack your AI system, they have access to basically everything. How to Protect Your AI Systems Despite the prevalence of AI in business today, a small percentage of businesses are actually using it to their up their defenses. Our own Impact of Technology on the Workplace report found that only 19% of businesses use AI for cybersecurity purposes. Fortunately, beyond that, there are some ways that you can protect your AI systems from being breached. The HiddenLayer report notes that building relationships between your AI and security teams is the best place to start. Then, you'll want to be regularly scanning and auditing all AI models used at your business. Finally, understanding the origin source of AI models in use can make sure you're ahead of problems before they arise. AI is just another piece of technology at your business: It requires attention in regard to security. Because if you think a standard breach is bad, just wait until a hacker gets into your AI system. https://tech.co/news/study-business-ai-security-breaches

  9. The Web3 gaming sector is on the cusp of going mainstream with notable game publishers now shifting their focus towards emerging fresher technologies. In order to attract web3 game developers to put their best foot forward, three parties have formed an alliance. Venture firms Immutable and King River Capital along have tied up with blockchain firm, the Polygon Labs to set up a fund of $100 million (roughly Rs. 83 crores) under the name – the Inevitable Games Fund (IGF). The future of Web3 gaming market has been projected to be bright, according to research conducted around the subject. The blockchain gaming market is expected to be churning up to $614 billion (roughly Rs. 51,07,086 crore) in the next seven years, a recent study by Fortune Business Insights had said. With the IGF, all three parties are testifying to their commitment to try and grow the potentially promising Web3 gaming sector. A bunch of other medium and large sized investors are also joining the initiative. These include Alpha Wave Ventures, the Chimera Capital by the Abu Dhabi Royal Group, as well as family offices like Mike Arrington, Co-Founder of CrunchFund, and Arrington Capital; Steve Kokinos In fact, a bunch of Web3 gaming firms have already bagged investments from the IGF. These include Pixelmon, Metalcore, Guild of Guardians, and My Pet Hooligan. King River Capital has been tasked with the responsibility of overseeing all investment related processes. These would include the deployment of IGF capital across game studios, web3 infrastructure developers, and immersive gaming projects. “Spending on video games exceeds the global revenue from movies, streaming TV and the music industry, combined, and it is ripe for a huge technology shift,” said Zeb Rice, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at King River Capital in a statement. As part of the deal, Polygon Labs and Immutable, meanwhile, will be providing key sourcing and web3 gaming expertise. As of 2023, Alchemy's Dapp Store lists 62 Web3 games supported on the Polygon blockchain. Messari, a crypto market intelligence firm claims that the combined market share of Immutable and Polygon is 70 percent of the total blockchain gaming development. https://www.gadgets360.com/cryptocurrency/news/polygon-labs-immutable-king-river-capital-web3-gaming-fund-usd-100-million-5276026
  10. Just under four months after the initial Ayaneo AM01 Mini PC unveiling and subsequent specs and pricing reveal, Ayaneo posted to their blog with up-to-date info on the AM01, including the reveal of a Zen 3-based Ryzen 7 5800U version. The two cheaper versions use a Ryzen 3 3200U and a Ryzen 7 5700U based on AMD's Zen 1 and Zen 2 architectures. For your reference, the Zen 3 architecture was released in late 2020, and we're currently awaiting the release of Zen 5 here in 2024. So, for the most part, the Ayaneo AM01 is still pretty much the same classic Macintosh-inspired mini-PC we covered before and has a very similar pricing scheme with the Ryzen 7 5800U as it does with other units. As-is, the Zen 3 Ryzen 7 5800U model looks astonishingly identical to the Zen 2 Ryzen 7 5700U at a glance, with the same basic core/thread spec, though, of course, the newer architecture has much better performance. The Ayaneo blog post also confirms that the Ryzen 7 is slated to operate at up to 35 Watts on the AM01, an ample boost to the official maximum TDP of 25 Watts. This higher TDP enabled alongside the proper RAM selection should help maximize the performance of the iGPU within. Pricing-wise, the Ayaneo AM01 is best purchased during the Early Bird window, which is a solid $30 cheaper. Considering the specs and size of the device, the price point is pretty tolerable for what it is, though the best bang for your buck will be found in devices like the LCD Steam Deck, used PCs, etc. If you hope to get your hands on the Ayaneo AM01 PC as soon as possible, head to their Indiegogo page to buy the device through crowdfunding. And as always, while we acknowledge Ayaneo's excellent track record in crowdfunded devices, you can't know what to expect until people get their hands on it. https://www.tomshardware.com/desktops/mini-pcs/ayaneo-am01-macintosh-esque-mini-pc-design-gets-an-amd-zen-3-upgrade

  12. Updated on March 20th, 2024 This list compiles the best free mobile games that you can play on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone - and we've done our best to keep it right up to date. We've everything from radical roguelikes to radish platformers, and we stop off at plenty of places in between, but the most important thing is that all of these are high-quality games that are totally free to download on your phone or tablet right now. HOW DID THIS LIST OF THE BEST FREE MOBILE GAMES COME TO BE? We originally started this list because a mass of developers came forward, offering up their normally-premium titles for free as a result of the increased isolation of society due to Covid-19. But, let's face it, working from home isn't exactly a trend we are going to see going away anytime soon, and there's definitely always going to be an appetite for great games with no cost of entry. Over time, the list has evolved into a selection of the finest free mobile games, be that free to start, free to play, or just plain free. We've deliberately tip-toed around some of the bigger names (which you probably already know), and we've also tried to mix up the genres that are in there to make sure it helps you out whatever your playing preferences. We're also updating it regularly, so that if you do find yourself here again in future, you'll find a fresh-faced, carefully curated list of fantastic free mobile games. Best upcoming mobile games! So, what we'll do here is compile and regularly update a list of the best free mobile games - including discounted premium and free-to-play games - which you can grab right now for your iPhone or Android device. As with everything, some of these discounts are limited-time or can change rapidly, so we'll do our best to keep the post updated - but if we do miss anything, then do feel free to reach out to us and let us know in the comments below. But for now, click on the big button below to start finding out the current best free mobile games to play on your iPhone or Android device. https://www.pocketgamer.com/best-games/free-mobile-games/
  13. Stardew Valley's 1.6 update is now live, releasing yesterday after Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone had enough time to wake up and make a cup of coffee—very funny, Barone. After waiting beside my PC all day for any signs of life, I immediately updated and jumped into 1.6 to start a brand new farm (and try to romance Sebastian all over again), and it looks like I wasn't the only one. Stardew Valley broke a new record yesterday as it beat its own player count on Steam, reaching a whopping 146,159, meaning it's currently the seventh most-played game wedged between Helldivers 2 and GTA 5. Previously, the record for player count in Stardew Valley was 94,879 back in January 2021, around the same time that patch 1.5.4 was released. This is not bad going for a game that's over eight years old, but then 1.6 really is an enormous (and free) set of additions. There's drinkable mayonnaise, cats with hats, and an entirely new farm type, the Meadowlands (which is absolutely massive, and comes complete with chickens). 1.6 also introduced some great updates to multiplayer games: you can have up to eight friends play with you on PC, and the connection will hopefully be smoother now that players use Steam multiplayer authentication. If all the updates in 1.6 aren't enough to encourage you to give it a go for yourself or if, like me, your friends just need a little bit more persuasion, then another excellent selling point to bring up in your pitch is the fact that Stardew Valley is on sale right now—at 20% off, so $11.99/£8.79. Granted, it's not a massive reduction, but I still think it's pretty cool that you can buy it discounted right after so much has been added. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/life-sim/just-under-150k-players-flooded-back-to-stardew-valley-for-the-16-update-and-hopefully-only-a-small-number-drank-the-mayo/
  14. Falling fertility rates are set to spark a transformational demographic shift over the next 25 years, with major implications for the global economy, according to a new study. By 2050, three-quarters of countries are forecast to fall below the po[CENSORED]tion replacement birth rate of 2.1 babies per female, research published Wednesday in The Lancet medical journal found. That would leave 49 countries — primarily in low-income regions of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia — responsible for the majority of new births. “Future trends in fertility rates and livebirths will propagate shifts in global po[CENSORED]tion dynamics, driving changes to international relations and a geopolitical environment, and highlighting new challenges in migration and global aid networks,” the report’s authors wrote in their conclusion. By 2100, just six countries are expected to have po[CENSORED]tion-replacing birth rates: The African nations of Chad, Niger and Tonga, the Pacific islands of Samoa and Tonga, and central Asia’s Tajikistan. That shifting demographic landscape will have “profound” social, economic, environmental and geopolitical impacts, the report’s authors said. In particular, shrinking workforces in advanced economies will require significant political and fiscal intervention, even as advances in technology provide some support. “As the workforce declines, the total size of the economy will tend to decline even if output per worker stays the same. In the absence of liberal migration policies, these nations will face many challenges,” Dr. Christopher Murray, a lead author of the report and director at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told CNBC. “AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics may diminish the economic impact of declining workforces but some sectors such as housing would continue to be strongly affected,” he added. Baby boom vs. bust The report, which was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, did not put a figure on the specific economic impact of the demographic shifts. However, it did highlight a divergence between high-income countries, where birth rates are steadily falling, and low-income countries, where they continue to rise. From 1950 to 2021, the global total fertility rate (TFR) — or average number of babies born to a woman — more than halved, falling from 4.84 to 2.23, as many countries grew wealthier and women had fewer babies. That trend was exacerbated by societal shifts, such as an increase in female workforce participation, and political measures including China’s one-child policy. From 2050 to 2100, the total global fertility rate is set to fall further from 1.83 to 1.59. The replacement rate — or number of children a couple would need to have to replace themselves — is 2.1 in most developed countries. That comes even as the global po[CENSORED]tion is forecast to grow from 8 billion currently to 9.7 billion by 2050, before peaking at around 10.4 billion in the mid-2080s, according to the UN. Already, many advanced economies have fertility rates well below the replacement rate. By the middle of the century, that category is set to include major economies China and India, with South Korea’s birth rate ranking as the lowest globally at 0.82 Meantime, lower-income countries are expected to see their share of new births almost double from 18% in 2021 to 35% by 2100. By the turn of the century, sub-Saharan Africa will account for half of all new births, according to the report. Murray said that this could put poorer countries in a “stronger position” to negotiate more ethical and fair migration policies — leverage that could become important as countries grow increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/22/falling-fertility-rates-pose-major-challenges-for-the-global-economy.html
  15. Kia has revealed a new compact sedan called the K4. The 2025 K4 is set to replace the Forte, and its name lines up with the mid-size K5. Full specs will be released next week at the New York auto show. After a shadowy set of teaser photos a week ago, Kia has revealed the design of the 2025 K4. The new compact sedan, which is set to the replace the Forte, bears the new corporate design language that is spreading across the lineup. No technical information was released for the K4, which will have its full global premiere next week on March 27 at the New York auto show. The new styling—which Kia has dubbed "Opposites United"—first appeared on the 2025 Carnival minivan and 2024 Sorento SUV, and now migrates to a smaller vehicle without looking awkward. Up front, the K4 sports T-shaped headlights that link a thin rectangular grille and culminate in a sharp point above the front wheel arch. This point then leads into a distinctive crease that cuts upwards to meet the sideview mirror, echoed by a similar line over the rear wheels that creates flat, wide haunches. The K4 also adopts a sloping fastback-style roofline, similar to the mid-size K5 sedan, and an unusual D-pillar where the chrome window trim abruptly ends in a triangular piece as it runs into a hard vertical line. Around back, the L-shaped taillights are connected across the width of the trunk. Inside, the K4 has a clean design, rendered here in an interesting shade of green. A large display spans the dashboard, which incorporates both the gauge cluster and infotainment. Underneath the screen sits a long horizontal chrome trim piece which houses the climate control vents, and physical buttons remain above and below for functions like "Home" and "Map." An old-school physical gear selector is also still present. We expect the K4 to offer similar powertrains to the outgoing Forte, which is available with either a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four or a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four. A hybrid model could be added to compete with the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and upcoming Honda Civic Hybrid, and an electric variant called the EV4 may follow as well. More details are coming next week when the 2025 K4 is formally revealed at the New York auto show. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60265708/2025-kia-k4-revealed/
  16. n 1996, when I was 10 years old, my mother and I moved to Gamboa, a neighbourhood by the waterfront in the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro. When I got married in 1977, we stayed in the area, had three kids and set up a pest control company. In 1990, we bought our first house there. It had a strange layout: when you entered, you had to go down a very long corridor. It was also very old, so we knew we would have to do some building work. We had dreams of adding a second floor, so each of our children could have their own room. The work finally began in 1996. We closed off half of the house so construction workers could start digging holes in the back for the pillars needed to support the extension. It was a hot, sunny day in January when, over lunch, one of the workers told me about finding animal bones in the holes they were digging. He wondered if the previous owners had had a lot of animals. After lunch, I rummaged through the piles of debris he had dug up and, to my shock, found pieces of skulls. I told the construction worker that these weren’t animal bones – they were human. Terror came over his face and he refused to go back to work. All the other workers also left early – nobody wanted to disturb the people who were laid to rest there. My daughters no longer wanted to live in the house either – they were scared that it was haunted. I just wanted to know what to do next. There were so many bones, and we had no idea how they had got there – did a serial killer bury his victims under our house? I remember feeling particularly shocked when I found some teeth that looked as if they had belonged to a child. I called my friend and neighbour, Carlos, who had researched the history of Gamboa. If anybody knew the story of the bones, it would be him. He came over that evening and showed me a history book that identified the area under my house as the New Blacks cemetery. The cemetery was used to bury enslaved people who died on ships that arrived at the port of Rio de Janeiro, or who died shortly after disembarking. Historians estimate that about 6,000 people were buried there between 1769 and 1830. Despite having lived in Gamboa most of my life, I had never heard of this. How could I have lived here for so long and not known about the cemetery? After hearing about my discovery, the director of the José Bonifácio Cultural Centre, a museum of Afro-Brazilian culture and history, came to visit. When he saw the boxes of bones, he made the sign of the cross and started to cry. He asked if he could inform the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute about what I had found, and I said yes. Researchers came to study the finds. I asked to be kept updated on their progress, but years passed and nothing happened. In the meantime, I was not allowed to move forward with any construction. In 1998, we had to move out of the house because the open holes resulted in water infiltration and a crack in the wall. If I wanted something to be done with what I had found, I would have to do it myself. On 20 November 2001, we opened our house to the public. We decided that we had to make these findings accessible. My husband and I bought two neighbouring houses to build a museum, and the Pretos Novos Institute (New Blacks Institute) was officially founded in 2005. It’s an educational space, a museum and an anthropological research centre. Today the institute is home to a dozen educators, anthropologists and tour guides. We provide free walking tours of the Port Zone, telling the story of the African diaspora in Brazil and the history of slavery in this area to students across Rio de Janeiro state. Despite all of the adversity, this is my life’s work. Countering the erasure of Black history in my neighbourhood is the most important thing I’ve ever done. Though it is difficult to maintain the institute, I will only stop doing it when racism is no longer a problem. Until then, I will continue to preserve the history that Brazil would prefer to ignore. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/22/experience-i-discovered-a-mass-grave-under-my-house
  17. According to the breed standard of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the Cane Corso was once distributed throughout much of the Italian peninsula, but in the recent past was found only in Puglia, in southern Italy.[1][2] After the collapse of the mezzadria system of share-cropping in the 1960s, the dogs became rare. The modern breed derives from selective breeding from about 1980 of a few surviving animals.[3] A breed society, the Società Amatori Cane Corso, was formed in 1983.[4]: 107 [5] The breed was recognised by the Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana in 1994;[3] it was provisionally accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1996, and received full acceptance in 2007.[6] It was recognised by the American Kennel Club of the United States in 2010.[7] In the period 2011–2019 the number of annual registrations in Italy was in the range of 3000–4250.[8] Characteristics[edit] The Cane Corso is a large dog of molossoid type, and is closely related to the Neapolitan Mastiff. It is well muscled[7] and less bulky than most other mastiff breeds. According to the international standard, dogs should stand some 62–70 cm at the withers and weigh 45–50 kg; ****** are about 4 cm smaller, and weigh some 5 kg less.[1] The head is large, slightly over one third of the height at the withers in length, with a well-defined stop. The top of the cranium is flat and slightly convergent to the muzzle. The eyes are oval in shape, and set well apart. The iris of the eye should be as dark as possible.[2] The coat is short, dense and lustrous. It may be black, various shades of grey (lead-grey, light grey or slate-grey) or fawn (dark fawn, light fawn, or stag red), or dark wheaten ('fromentino'); it may be brindled. Minor white markings on the chest, the feet or the nose are tolerated.[1][2] The Cane Corso is genetically pre-disposed to elbow and hip dysplasia, to patellar luxation and to retinal dysplasia. It has above-average susceptibility to demodicosis, ectropion, entropion, gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat), hypothyroidism, idiopathic epilepsy, mycotic otitis and nictitans gland prolapse (cherry eye).[9]: 129  In 2017 a study of 232 Cane Corso dogs from 25 countries found an average life span of 9.3 years, varying with different coat colours. The longest-lived were black brindle (10.3 years), followed by: brindle (10.1 years); grey brindle (9.8 years); black, fawn and grey (all 9.0 years); and dogs of other colours (8.1 years).[10] A study of dogs in the United Kingdom, published in 2024, found an average life span for the breed of 8.1 years overall.[11] https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/cane-corso/
  18. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says the design of the St George's Cross on the English football team kit should not be "messed with". Earlier, the Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer had also joined the chorus of prominent voices taking issue with design. The new shirt design features the cross of St George in navy, light blue and purple on the back of the collar. BBC News understands there are no plans to change or recall the shirt. Speaking to reporters, Mr Sunak said he "prefers the original" and the national flag is a "source of pride" and identity. "When it comes to our national flags, we shouldn't mess with them because they're a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they're perfect as they are," he said. On social media, the culture secretary said: "Fans should always come first, and it's clear that this is not what fans want." 19. UK aid-funded field hospital is 'up and running in Gaza', says foreign office The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced on Friday that a UK aid-funded field hospital is “now up and running in Gaza”. In a social media post on its X account, the UK Foreign Office said the hospital will treat more than 100 patients a day and “make a real difference on the ground”. The hospital is run by the medical and humanitarian NGO, UK-Med. UK-Med posted a YouTube link to a video which showed its CEO, David Wightwick, on a tour of the hospital in Gaza. “With the emergency department, operating theatre and inpatient wards currently under construction, this facility will be able to treat at least 250 patients per day,” UK-Med said. Portugal gives €10m to Unrwa as new additional aid Portugal said on Thursday it would give €10m ($10.89m/£8.6m) to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (Unrwa) as a one-off contribution intended to provide food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to Palestinians, reports Reuters. The amount was announced by acting cabinet affairs minister Mariana Vieira da Silva following a cabinet meeting. According to the news agency, a foreign ministry official described the amount as new additional aid that had not been in the state budget for 2024. Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner general of Unrwa, expressed his thanks via social media on Friday. He wrote on X: Thank you Portugal [and] João Cravinho, for your new contribution to Unrwa. Your decision comes at a time of unprecedented challenges and will support our efforts to reverse the impact of the looming famine in Gaza and to provide lifeline services to Palestine refugees across the region. I hope other countries will follow your solidarity.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/mar/22/middle-east-crisis-live-israel-gaza-ceasefire-resolution-un-security-council-benjamin-netanyahu-antony-blinken-latest-updates
