  1. With the amount of layoffs across the tech industry in 2023, it's no surprise that great software developer jobs are getting harder to come by. After all, so many tech workers are now free agents hoping to land a great six-figure gig to replace the one they lost. Software developers are among those currently pushing through those headwinds to find the career openings. But there are plenty of spots open today at all the best tech companies with every software development role available, from intern all the way to CTO. Here, we've rounded up the top software engineering positions open at the best tech companies around. Most of them offer six figures, and some are even fully remote (a perk that we at Tech.co have been championing since before it was cool). Check out these global companies for every possible software engineering career path that's open in November 2023. https://tech.co/news/software-developer-jobs-apply-this-month
  2. The holidays can be a pretty stressful time. Between family gatherings with grumpy relatives and Christmas shopping trips that are reminiscent of D-Day, stress is perhaps the most reasonable response to the holiday season. Fortunately, a little bit of cannabis can go a long way in calming your nerves during the most chaotic time of the year. And lucky for you, we've got a holiday gift guide with 420 written all over it. With cannabis becoming legal in a number of states around the US, the number of gadgets available online has skyrocketed. Whether you're looking for top-of-the-line vaporizers or hidden cannabis grinders, you'll be able to find it somewhere online. Lucky for you, we did the leg work for you, so you can sit down on your comfortable couch, pick a show on Netflix to binge watch (while you still can), and smoke some of your favorite plant with all the gadgets and gear we found for you below. https://tech.co/news/gift-guide-2017-cannabis-gadgets-2017-11
  3. Toast is a well-respected, restaurant-specific POS system with a great breadth of useful business features and a reasonable price tag to match. In fact, with a near-perfect research score of 4.9/5 for restaurant features, Toast has some of the most advanced capabilities of any POS we've reviewed. However, while Toast can be an asset to businesses with the right hardware and is one of the best restaurant POS systems, it's currently only compatible with Android devices. This unfortunately means it's a POS that is inaccessible to businesses that run on iOS technology. With no live chat or email options available, Toast scored significantly low for help and support, too, suggesting that its options may not be able to meet the needs of all food businesses. There's a lot to discuss when it comes to this restaurant POS though. Scroll down to see how its features, hardware packages, and price points measure up. Alternatively, you can use our tailored POS comparison tool to receive personalized quotes from leading POS providers in minutes. https://tech.co/pos-system/toast-pos-review

  5. AI's been a fraught conversation in videogames. Heck, it's even reared its head in Dungeons & Dragons, the ruleset Baldur's Gate 3 was built on top of—especially after some recent comments by Hasbro's CEO about "leveraging" all of its previous works. Swen Vincke, the founder and CEO of Larian Studios is a lot more level-headed about the tech's use cases. That's as per a recent interview with IGN at GDC this year: "My stance on AI is really straightforward: It is a tool that we use to help us do things faster. We have so much work that we're happy to take assistance from anything," however, he adds: "I don't think it'll ever replace the creative side of things and I can put money where my mouth is." Vincke believes, generally, that AI can be harnessed—just not in the way that certain companies like Ubisoft have been doing it, with unappealing "Neo NPCs" that seem like they're just there to put narrative designers and writers out of a job, at least, if you believe the hype of tech speculation fantasy land. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/baldurs-gate/larian-studios-swen-vincke-does-see-potential-uses-for-ai-but-were-hiring-writers-not-having-chatgpt-write-their-dialogues/
  6. Their landlord left empty derelict buildings to decay on their estate. But now the community of Little London has found their voice — and they are fighting back. After 40 years of government failure, our broken housing system allows wealthy landowners to dodge their responsibility to provide safe, decent homes. The Little London residents are an inspiration for anyone who has felt powerless against their landlord. A new film, produced by NEF, shows the impact of our broken housing system on a whole community of people — and what happens when they decide to take a stand. https://neweconomics.org/2024/03/big-power-for-little-london
  7. The 2023 Fisker Ocean lineup is getting its prices slashed by between $14K and $24K, depending on the trim level. The top-spec Extreme's base price drops from $63,937 to $39,937; the entry-level Sport and mid-tier Ultra now start at $27,437 and $37,437, respectively. The dramatic price cuts come as Fisker fights to avoid bankruptcy, having recently paused production for six weeks to address the situation. Fisker appears to be on the brink of bankruptcy, and today the California-based startup has announced that it is drastically slashing prices for the 2023 Ocean electric SUV. The lineup consists of three trim levels, starting with the front-drive Sport and moving up to better-equipped all-wheel-drive models—the Ultra and top-of-the-line Extreme. The entry-level Sport sees its starting price drop by $14K, from $41,437 to $27,734. The mid-tier Ultra's starting price is cut $18K, from $55,437 to $37,437. Finally, the Extreme's previous base price has gone from $63,937 all the way down to $39,937, which amounts to a substantial $24,000 discount. All of these figures include the $2438 destination fee. Fisker said the reduced prices apply to 2023 models with the company new 2024 Ocean OS 2.0 software installed. The discounts will also go into effect this Friday, March 29. In its press release, the company said,"Fisker is strategically positioning Ocean to be a more affordable and compelling EV choice, competitively available to EV buyers." Car and Driver has reached out to a Fisker spokesperson to ask if the price cuts will apply to the 2024 Ocean too, however, we have yet to hear back from them. We will update this story if or when we get a response. It's no coincidence that the dramatic price cuts come as the company fights to avoid bankruptcy. This past February, Fisker's problems became obvious after an ominous earnings call that provided a bleak outlook followed by mass layoffs. Then, starting last week on March 18, the company paused production for six weeks as it worked on a plan to address its current financial turmoil. While Fisker has announced a commitment from an existing investor along with a new wave of financing reportedly worth up to $150 million in gross proceeds, talks with a large unnamed automaker have since broken down, according to Reuters. Fisker has also been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange as its financial woes grow Link:https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60320119/fisker-ocean-ev-suv-big-price-cuts-possible-bankruptcy/
  8. When my relationship imploded, I chose to remain alone and isolated. It was the start of a new, much happier life, in which I became the safe place I could always return to Jade Angeles Fitton Wed 27 Mar 2024 07.00 GMT Almost a decade ago, I lay on my back on the floor. Through the open window, I could hear the wind rattling loose stones and blackthorn. I was alone, which meant – although I didn’t know it yet – I had made it out of the worst years of my life. A year earlier, depressed and in a state of heightened anxiety induced by the unhappy relationship I was in, I had looked for something to steady my mind and my hands. A lover of the medieval, I had got into painting illuminated manuscripts and would come up with imaginary commandments, one of which read: “If all else fails, just lie on the floor and wait for something to happen.” Now, I was. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/27/a-moment-that-changed-me-my-partner-drove-off-and-left-me-and-in-solitude-i-found-my-self-confidence
  9. Two boys, aged 11 and 12, have been charged after an alleged burglary at an environmental college during which a number of animals died. A break-in was reported at Capel Manor College in Gunnersbury Park, west London, on 25 February. A barn owl called Shiraz escaped but was recovered at a warehouse near Heathrow Airport. The boys are accused of two counts of burglary and one of animal cruelty. They are due to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Thursday. Staff said animals had been killed during the alleged break-in and enclosures damaged, the Met Police said. The college's website says it specialises in environmental teaching, offering young people and adults the opportunity to take care of its estates, gardens, farm and zoos. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-68554158
  10. Wales football's top official has confirmed Rob Page will continue as national team manager despite the failure to qualify for the Euro 2024 finals. Football Association of Wales president Steve Williams has moved quickly to remove doubts over Page's future. It comes after the penalty shootout defeat to Poland in Tuesday night's play-off final. Page, 49, signed a deal in 2022 to take him through to the next World Cup. Where it all went wrong for Wales Penalty loss was 'cruel', says Davies Williams said: "The FAW can confirm Rob Page is their manager for the forthcoming campaign in accordance with his contract. "Rob is the manager. His contract runs to the end of the World Cup and that is how we continue to work." There will, as is routine, still be a review of the latest camp and campaign. But there is no appetite within the association to remove Page now as they believe the squad is still a work in progress under him. Following the loss to Poland, Page said he was "absolutely" the right man to continue leading Wales into the Nations League and 2026 World Cup. There had been tensions between Page and FAW chief executive Noel Mooney during the campaign but the pair held talks to clear the air, understood to have been instigated by Williams. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68675626
  11. Dozens of Israeli settlers and rightwing activists have protested by again blocking the entrances of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) office in Jerusalem and calling for the body’s closure. Last week, Israel announced it would no longer approve Unrwa food convoys to the north of Gaza, where the threat of famine is highest. The decision came after the agency was accused by the government of collaborating with Hamas in Gaza, with its staff facing a systematic campaign of obstruction and harassment by the Israeli military and authorities, as revealed in internal UN documents seen by the Guardian. Unrwa was founded in 1949 to provide healthcare, food, and education to Palestinian refugees, with 5.9 million of them relying on its services. It employs about 30,000 Palestinians, 13,000 of them – mostly teachers – in Gaza. On Wednesday, a group of settlers, activists, and members of the rightwing extra-parliamentary political group Im Tirtzu staged a protest for the third week in a row, fixing posters to the building and demanding that the agency be abolished. Unrwa needs to be disbanded,” said Aynat Libman, a 52-year-old Israeli settler from Efrat. “Israel doesn’t need to provide space to Unrwa in our capital. They support terror, teach children from a very young age to be terrorists, provide support to Hamas, and supply Hamas. They are terrorists.” Israel has accused Unrwa staff members of participating in the 7 October attack and called the agency “a front for Hamas”. The UN has launched an internal and an independent investigation but has said Israel has not provided it with any evidence to support the claims against its staff. A US intelligence assessment of Israel’s claims that UN aid agency staff members participated in the 7 October attack reportedly assessed with “low confidence” that a handful of staff had taken part, indicating that it considered the accusations to be credible but that it could not independently confirm their veracity. It cast doubt, however, on accusations that the UN agency was collaborating with Hamas in a wider way. The protesters expressed their anger over the UN resolution on the ceasefire in Gaza, describing it as an attack against Israel. “The UN and [António] Guterres should be ashamed of themselves,” added Libman. “They are antisemitic, and there is no other way to say it.” Rightwing supporters and settlers have previously attempted to block aid trucks from entering Gaza at the Nitzana border crossing, and this is not the first time settlers and rightwing activists have targeted the UN agency by placing threatening posters on the main entrance and calling for it to be shut down. We want the Israeli government to expel Unrwa from Israel,” said Roei Ben Dor, 21, from Gedera. “Unrwa is Hamas; their workers are affiliated with Hamas. We should be in Gaza, not just because of Hamas but because Gaza is ours. We have every right to take Gaza, to take Rafah. This is our land.” Among the protesters was Aryeh King, a deputy mayor of Jerusalem and a prominent advocate for settlements. “We need to transfer all of them [all Palestinian residents] out of Gaza,” King said. “Because Hamas is the people of Gaza.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/27/israeli-settlers-protest-un-agency-refugees-unrwa-jerusalem
