Xi is promoting a “Global Security Initiative”, which was announced in April with few details following the formation of the Quad by the US, Japan, Australia and India in response to Beijing’s more assertive foreign policy.Kazakhstan is part of China’s multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative to expand trade by building ports, railways and other infrastructure across an arc of dozens of countries – from the South Pacific through Asia to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. The initiative and China’s economic inroads into Central Asia have created unease in Russia, which sees the region as its sphere of influence. Kazakhstan and its neighbours are trying to attract Chinese investment without upsetting Moscow. “This visit is extremely important,” said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Roman Vassilenko this week before Xi’s arrival. “We certainly hope that it will advance political and economic and commercial relations with China.” Andy Mok, a senior research fellow at the Centre for China and Globalisation, told Al Jazeera that Kazakhstan “is vitally important” to China, with the two countries enjoying “deep, structural and historic” ties.Pope Francis was also in Kazakhstan at the same time as Xi, but there was no indication they might meet. On board his flight, the pope was asked about a possible meeting and replied, “I don’t have any news about this. Link Hunter-gatherer groups living in southwest Asia may have started keeping and caring for animals nearly 13,000 years ago — roughly 2,000 years earlier than previously thought. Ancient plant samples extracted from present-day Syria show hints of charred dung, indicating that people were burning animal droppings by the end of the Old Stone Age, researchers report September 14 in PLOS One. The findings suggest humans were using the dung as fuel and may have started animal tending during or even before the transition to agriculture. But what animals produced the dung and the exact nature of the animal-human relationship remain unclear.“We know today that dung fuel is a valuable resource, but it hasn’t really been documented prior to the Neolithic,” says Alexia Smith, an archaeobotanist at the University of Connecticut in Storrs (SN: 8/5/03). Smith and her colleagues reexamined 43 plant samples taken in the 1970s from a residential dwelling at Abu Hureyra, an archaeological site now lost under the Tabqa Dam reservoir. The samples date from roughly 13,300 to 7,800 years ago, spanning the transition from hunter-gatherer societies to farming and herding. Throughout the samples, the researchers found varying amounts of spherulites, tiny crystals that form in the intestines of animals and are deposited in dung. There was a noticeable uptick between 12,800 and 12,300 years ago, when darkened spherulites also appeared in a fire pit — evidence they were heated to between 500⁰ and 700⁰ Celsius, and probably burned. The team then cross-referenced these findings against previously published data from Abu Hureyra. It found that the dung burning coincided with a shift from circular to linear buildings, an indication of a more sedentary lifestyle, along with steadily rising numbers of wild sheep at the site and a decline in gazelle and other small game. Combined, the authors argue, these findings suggest humans may have started tending animals outside their homes and were burning the piles of dung at hand as a supplement to wood. “The spherulite evidence reported here confirms that dung of some sort was used as fuel,” says Naomi Miller, an archaeobotanist at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved with the study. Figuring out what animal left the dung could reveal whether animals were tethered outside or not. While the authors propose wild sheep, which would have been more accommodating to capture, Miller suggests the source was probably roaming wild gazelle. “Spherulites coming from off-site collection of gazelle dung, stored until burned as fuel, is to my mind a more plausible interpretation,” Miller says. Even if kept for a few days, she says, sheep wouldn’t produce large amounts of dung. “The whole thing is a classic whodunit,” says anthropologist Melinda Zeder, something perhaps DNA analysis could solve (SN: 7/6/17). Gazelle might be the source, she says, and if captured young, the animals may have even been tended for a while — even if they weren’t eventually domesticated. “The interesting thing is that people [were] experimenting with their environment,” says Zeder, of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. “Domestication is almost incidental to that.”

But data shows that the tried-and-true phrase can mean a person lives a healthier life in the time they are allocated versus living a longer life. “There is an abundance of research showing that healthy lifestyle habits — which include regular physical activity and a diet light on red meat and heavy on fruits and vegetables — leads to healthier longevity,” said Steven Austad, Ph.D., Protective Life Endowed Chair in Healthy Aging Research in the UAB Department of Biology. “By that, I mean living life with the physical and mental abilities to do the things you like to do, not necessarily a longer life.” While we do not have the keys to stop time and aging alone, Austad’s comments are echoed by James Hill, Ph.D., chair of the UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences, and Thomas Buford, Ph.D., director of the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine and professor in the UAB Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care. “A healthy lifestyle will positively contribute to quality of life, while effects on lifespan are smaller,” Hill said. Buford explained that “older adults we’ve talked with over the years say that better quality of life or the ‘life in your years’ is more important to them than the number of years of their life.” Small changes = big impacts All three experts agree that incorporating healthy eating and regular physical activity will make for a fuller life. However, Hill notes a key reason to embrace a healthy lifestyle is avoiding or managing chronic diseases. Adapting consistent and healthy eating habits and moderate physical activity relative to a person’s needs and existing lifestyle can help to ward off chronic diseases and lower the chances of significant health events as one ages, including heart attacks, high blood pressure — even dementia.“A real surprise that has come out in recent years is that sustained physical activity helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” Austad said. “A muscle-brain connection can truly make the difference in a person’s overall health as they mature.” Austad also notes that a key to healthy aging lies in staying socially connected to others. “Remaining socially engaged is important for both mental health and life satisfaction. Sitting alone at home is a health-compromising habit, but a habit that we can all break with a little effort.” Incorporating changes for life The notion of adopting small or large changes to routines or lifestyles can be the reason people never start making adaptations. In relation to aging, both Buford and Hill agree that finding enjoyable physical activity or nutritional habits that one can incorporate consistently and without pressure is key. “Many people tend to get discouraged when they can’t meet guidelines for physical activity or aren’t perfect in their diet,” Buford said. “Research says that even lower levels of physical activity can have health benefits if you are consistent, and diet quality is all about balance and consistency. Also, finding a group of people to support one another is frequently cited as one of the best ways to maintain healthy lifestyle habits.” In making any plans to modify lifestyle habits, the key is to start small and steadily make incremental changes that can be sustained over time. “It’s never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle,” Hill said. “Often people who have not had healthy habits can start by making a few small changes in how much they move and what they eat. This will often lead to more changes. No matter how old you are or how bad your lifestyle habits are, you can benefit from making better lifestyle choices.”

Compared to three weeks ago, AMD GPU prices have declined 13% on average, while Nvidia GPUs have dipped by -6%. It is immediately evident that Nvidia's GPU price decline rate is slowing, as you can see in the graph below. The Nvidia graphics card pricing curve appears to be flattening in April. The source site says that it may be an indicator that "the time of rapid price reductions is now over." However, these kinds of supply/demand pricing curves are not always smooth or so easily predictable.3D Center's previous figures showed both Nvidia and AMD GPUs were both ~25% over MSRPs at the end of March. This might have been enough to tempt some Nvidia fans who had sheltered from the storm over the preceding months. On the other side of the equation, the Nvidia GPU supply might have slowed for some reason or other in the last few weeks.
