As AMD increases its market share and revenues, so does its research and development budget. AMD’s CPU division is expanding. And it’s not just new hires. It’s building a new research and development facility in Poughkeepsie, New York. A list of open positions(opens in new tab) on AMD’s website (via Tom's Hardware(opens in new tab) and @mikeev(opens in new tab)) shows that the company is looking for some serious talent. There are 25 open engineering positions, and most of them are based in Poughkeepsie. The positions include CPU core, performance and verification engineers. These aren’t the kinds of skills that you learn in high school, and they represent a significant financial investment by AMD. The news will also please the United States government, as it seeks to boost domestic chip manufacturing capacity. AMD could have established the new facility in Asia for cheaper. That alone is a sign that AMD’s finances are in a healthy state. According to AMD’s financial reports, its net revenues increased by a massive 70% from March to 2021 to 2022, with net income rising over 41%. That means AMD has the cash to splash. How long until we see the fruits of this new hiring spree? Honestly, it will be years. Zen 4 is getting ready to release(opens in new tab), Zen 5 work will be well advanced if it’s to launch in 2023-2024. That means products featuring design input from the new facility are likely to debut in 2025 at the earliest, though the verification engineers will have plenty to do in the meantime. It’s a far cry from AMD’s doldrum days in the early 2010’s. At that time, it was a potential takeover target when its share price went under $2.00. As Ryzen and EPYC products took market share, so did the growth of the company. It’s good to see that after shareholder dividends are paid out, there’s enough left over to significantly boost R&D spending. Healthy competition is good for the consumer and it forces Intel to remain aggressive to prevent AMD from making further inroads into its lucrative CPU businesses. https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-invests-in-a-new-cpu-randd-facility-in-new-york/

Photos from the set of the upcoming TV show suggest that Amazon is taking its design cues from Fallout 4 and 76. The set for Amazon's upcoming Fallout TV series seems pretty leaky, because today we got our first close-up look at the Bezos Empire's take on Fallout's trademark power armour. Folks, it's huge. Eagle-eyed observers on Reddit(opens in new tab) note that the design of the armour in the photo strongly resembles the T-60 power armour that you might remember from Fallout 4 and 76. That suggests that the aesthetic direction of the series is being set by Bethesda's east coast Fallouts, rather than the western-flavoured games of yore. Although I'll go to my grave declaring not only that New Vegas is the best Fallout, but one of the best games of all time, I have to admit that Fallout 4 was a strikingly pretty thing indeed. Amazon could do a lot worse than to take its visual cues from Bethesda on this one. This isn't the first clandestine shot that's been smuggled off the Fallout set. Last week, we got a few snaps that seem to show the show's designs for vault interiors and vault suits. Before that, someone stumbled upon a scene(opens in new tab) that was almost certainly a set from the show while out and about in Staten Island. Again, to Amazon's credit they all looked very Fallout indeed, right down to the tailfins on the burnt-out, nuclear-powered cars. The show is set to star Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell(opens in new tab), but there's no word yet on when it'll be released. Job listings suggest that shooting started sometime around the end of last month, with a realistic release window of 2024(opens in new tab). Considering how polished the props and sets look in these photos, that seems like a fairly accurate guess. I confess I'm still a bit sceptical about this one. I love Fallout 1 and New Vegas, but while the Bethesda games are good fun, I've never felt like the writers of them have managed to get enough of a grip on the setting to say anything really interesting with it. If the series ends up taking its plot cues from Fallout 4 and 76, I'm not sure they'll be able to get me on board. I probably will spend a lot of time watching YouTube clips of people stomping around in power armour, though. https://www.pcgamer.com/leaked-shots-show-amazons-colossal-take-on-fallouts-power-armour/

As with the Pathfinder games, developers Owlcat plan to document the creation of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader with a series of dev diary videos on its YouTube channel(opens in new tab). The first of them features lead narrative designer Olga Kellner giving an early look at the spacefaring CRPG. Kellner says players will get to enjoy "space exploration, voidship battles, intrigues, weird warp phenomena, and many other things" recognizable from the Warhammer 40,000 setting. As a voidship captain with an unusual degree of freedom on the fringe of the Imperium, including control of a merchant empire, players will get to make decisions with consequences reflected by the setting and its characters. We might, for instance, "stay faithful to the Emperor or test the limits of your privileges and the Inquisition's patience, wreak havoc on your planets, consort with the enemies of humankind, even fall into the clutches of Chaos." The dev diary also has a look at our entourage, with recruitable companions including a seneschal, a psyker, a Sister of Battle, an eldar ranger, a tech-priest, and a space marine of the Space Wolves chapter. Owlcat's website has already documented a couple of these characters, so we know the seneschal is a man of duty named Abelard Werserian(opens in new tab), while the psyker is a diviner named Idira Tlass(opens in new tab), "a tortured and broken soul haunted by the whispers from beyond the veil." Owlcat's website also introduces Lord Captain Theodora von Valancius Massimo af Scarus(opens in new tab), the head of a dynastic family of rogue traders who "owns a voidship crewed by thousands of loyal servants, reigns over a vast conglomerate of worlds that bring her immense wealth, and vies for supremacy with the other Rogue Traders of the Koronus Expanse". Seems likely she'll be our character's mentor, and maybe we'll inherit her voidship. Unlike Owlcat's Pathfinder games, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will only have turn-based combat. It's inspired by a tabletop RPG of the same name published by Fantasy Flight, though "it won't be a direct transfer from tabletop to a videogame" according to Owlcat's community manager(opens in new tab) on Reddit. Though there's no release date yet, the preorder FAQ(opens in new tab) says an alpha of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is planned for this year, with a beta following next year. https://www.pcgamer.com/owlcat-gives-a-first-look-at-warhammer-40000-rogue-trader-and-some-of-its-companions/

Microsoft delays changes to its app store amid developer uproar. Microsoft has delayed plans to enforce additional control over the apps allowed in its app store after an uproar from developers. The Windows 11 maker had previously announced plans to prevent developers from selling open-source apps that would typically be available for free and from creating browser apps using the Apple WebKit engine. The new policies were due to go live this week (July 16 2022), however in response to developers’ dissatisfaction, Microsoft Store General Manager Giorgio Sardo has said that the company will delay these changes. Developing apps for Microsoft Store. Only Chromium, Gecko or the now discontinued EdgeHTML browser engines were to be supported under the new guidelines, which places Apple’s WebKit among a number of other engines that would no longer be supported. Microsoft has previously spoken out about Apple’s iOS App Store browser rule which sti[CENSORED]tes that all iOS browser apps should be built on the WebKit engine, rather than the alternatives mentioned above, like the po[CENSORED]r Chromium. The European Union is already preparing to combat this with its Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, while UK and US equivalents are considering similar moves, all in an effort to instill an industry-wide level of fairness and consistency. Another key concern regarding the changes that were previously due to take place on July 16 2022 was the financial viability for both sides. "I am disappointed by the Microsoft Store policy change that prohibits selling open source software," SUSE Rancher Senior Engineering Manager said earlier this week in a Twitter post. "The Store provides independent open source developers an opportunity to create sustainable projects by charging a reasonable amount there." When asked why open-source apps cannot be sold through its app store, a company spokesperson said in an email to The Register(opens in new tab) that the “Microsoft Store supports and encourages OSS developers to publish free and unpaid apps, including browsers using other engines.” https://www.techradar.com/news/microsoft-steps-back-on-controversial-app-store-policies

Kingdom: The Blood is based on the show about politics and the undead in 16th-century Korea. The hit South Korean television series Kingdom(opens in new tab) is coming to the world of videogames in the form of Kingdom: The Blood, a "brutal yet precise" hack-and-slash action game set in 16th-century Korea. Kingdom, currently available in North America on Netflix, takes place three years after the end of the Imjin War in a fictionalized version of Joseon, the predecessor to modern-day Korea. As Crown Prince Lee Chang investigates a mysterious illness that has befallen the king, he must also fend off the advances of his political rivals, who are bent on seizing the throne. It's The West Wing meets The Walking Dead, basically, but 400 years ago and in Korea. The first season trailer is a bit subtle about what's going on, but season two is definitely on point: It sounds like a weird mashup but apparently it's quite good—both the critical and audience scores on Rotten Tomato(opens in new tab)es are in the 90s. There's still no word on the status of a hoped-for third season of Kingdom, but Netflix has decided to let 'er rip with a "K-zombie action game" based on the series called Kingdom: The Blood. Developed by South Korean studio Action Square, the studio behind the top-down roguelite shooter Anvil(opens in new tab), Kingdom: The Blood promises to treat Korean culture "with the utmost care," which includes using a professional Korean sword dancer for motion capture. The game will feature a Conquest Mode offering players "a sequence of diverse five-minute battles," as well as multi-boss battles, PvP combat, and a story mode that follows the events of the Netflix show. Based on the trailer I think it's fair to say that Kingdom: The Blood is going to lean more heavily on the zombies than the political intrigue, but we'll have to wait to get a closer look: Netflix said more information, including the release date, will be revealed later. https://www.pcgamer.com/netflix-is-making-a-k-zombie-action-game-based-on-the-hit-series-kingdom/
