[Animals] 400 caged exotic animals recovered, smugglers held
-_-Moltres-_- posted a topic in Animals
Mizoram police on Wednesday seized one of the largest consignments of exotic animals intercepted along the North-East India border with Myanmar, retrieving four tortoises, 11 snakes, 442 lizards, four three-toed sloths, two beavers, one wild cat, and four pottos. The interception comes at a time when a burgeoning, under-the-radar illegal trade of exotic animals is believed to have been established in parts of the country, especially in West Bengal, Assam and Mizoram, where smugglers take advantage of porous borders and lax laws. A senior police official said five people had been arrested. “This is one of the largest consignments seized in the North-East in recent times, if not the largest,” said the officer, asking not to be named. The leopard tortoise is found only in Africa. The three-toed sloth is mostly found in central and south America. Potto, also called bush bear, is a slow-moving primate found in tropical Africa, while beavers are among the largest rodents found in North America and Europe. The consignment was seized early on Wednesday from Khankawn area of Mizoram’s Champai district close to the international border. Instead of using vehicles, the accused were carrying the animals in small cages in bags and some were being carried by the suspects on their heads, concealed in a cloth, in order to avoid police. “All the accused were from bordering districts such as Champai and Lawngtlai. The animals and the accused persons were handed over to the Customs department,” said the officer. Since March, a string of similar seizures have been made, including of animals like kangaroos, meerkats, cockatoos and African crested porcupines. The smuggling of exotic animals falls in a legal grey area in India, where most such cases are prosecuted under the milder Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which is bailable and carries a maximum punishment of three months and a fine of ₹100. The stricter Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 lists species found in the country and is silent about exotic animals, experts previously told HT. “Trade in exotic species of wild animals has shot up in recent times. A series of consignments have been seized in recent times in Assam and Mizoram after they have been smuggled into India across the Indo-Myanmar border. The Mizoram - Manipur corridor has become a hotspot,” said Rahul Dutta, wildlife crime investigator and analyst. The 1,643-km long unfenced and porous Indo-Myanmar border which passes through four states including Mizoram, has become a hot spot for smuggling including narcotics, exotic species and other contraband items. Once in India, they reach Assam and West Bengal, and are then funnelled through to their demand destinations across India. Most of the animals come from farms and private zoos in countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. But what has exacerbated an already dangerous situation may be the political situation in Myanmar. In February 2021, the military junta seized control, jailing National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and triggering wide spread protests, armed resistance and mass killings. “The border, which was already porous, has become more so now. People are in desperate need of money and traffickers are taking advantage of this. Smuggling provides easy money,” said a senior police official of Champai district in Mizoram adjacent to the international border. https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/400-caged-exotic-animals-recovered-smugglers-held-101653503369100.html -
ercedes winks at the rich in general and at collectors, foreshadowing cars that are open to the top. First the Mythos , a Mercedes SL in a practically speedster cut, which can be glimpsed in a teaser. The windshield is reduced, no roof, two humps behind the seats, as it once was. Then the head of Mercedes style, Gorden Wagener, also anticipates the Maybach version of the SL: very rich two-tone with almost regal finishes, equipped and more comfortable than the Mythos, but always with a twin-turbo V8 engine. We will see them again, anticipated and then in substance with a certain mind-boggling price list. At Mercedes we can glimpse drawings of the most particular versions that the SL will be able to do: a Maybach and a speedster Nissan Maxima Versus the Competition Nissan Maxima vs. Toyota Avalon Like the Nissan, the Toyota Avalon is a large car with a powerful V6 engine and an intuitive infotainment system. However, the Toyota comes out ahead thanks to its larger trunk and more spacious rear seats. It also has sharper steering and better mpg ratings than the Nissan. Nissan Maxima vs. Dodge Charger The Dodge Charger has fewer standard safety features than the Maxima, and it has a lower-rent cabin, but other than that, it’s the better sedan. The Charger has an accommodating second row, a larger trunk, zestier handling, available all-wheel drive, and a range of engines that blow away the Nissan. Maxima Interior: Luxe Cabin, but Lacking in Space Maxima Interior Quality This Nissan has an upscale cabin. There are plenty of soft-touch materials, the leather is supple, and fit and finish is top-notch. Maxima Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation Using the NissanConnect infotainment system is straightforward. There are handy physical controls placed within easy reach of the driver, and the touch screen responds well to inputs. https://www.automoto.it/news/quando-si-dice-siamo-al-top-anticipazione-novita-maybach.html

Bone health is and should be an important aspect of life. There are many bone disorders, and among them is osteogenesis imperfecta, whose main symptom is bone fragility causing multiple recurrent fractures, bone deformity and short stature. According to Dr Sheetal Sharda, clinical geneticist and director of genomics division, Neuberg Centre for Genomic Medicine (NCGM), in this disease low bone mineral density is observed, and extra-skeletal manifestations such as bluish colouration of the eyes, abnormal tooth development and hearing impairment can also be present “This rare hereditary bone fragility disorder is caused by collagen mutations in around 90 per cent of cases. In severe cases, this condition can also occur before birth. In mild cases, few fractures are seen in an individual in their entire lifetime, while in moderate cases, the person may have hundreds of fractures,” the doctor says She adds that the disease is identified in around 22 different forms, and may not always be distinguished based Genetic testing is necessary to diagnose and describe rarer forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). “Some forms are so severe, an individual’s mobility may get affected and they may have to use a walker or wheelchair. Sometimes an individual diagnosed with severe OI would have underdeveloped lungs with a small and fragile rib cage. Babies born with severe OI often have life-threatening breathing problems and survive only for a short period,” says Dr Sharda. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/osteogenesis-imperfecta-brittle-bone-disease-7934006/

Nineteen young children and two adults have died in a shooting at a primary school in south Texas. The gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School - which teaches children aged seven to 10 - in the city of Uvalde before he was killed by law enforcement, officials said. The 18-year-old suspect had a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines, investigators say. The teenager is suspected of shooting his grandmother before the rampage. Local media report he may have been a high school student in the area. Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Chief of Police Pete Arredondo said the shooting began at 11:32 local time on Tuesday, and that investigators believe the attacker "did act alone during this heinous crime". Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter, whom he named as Salvador Ramos, abandoned a vehicle before entering the school to "horrifically, incomprehensibly" open fire. An Uvalde school district police officer, who worked at the school, saw Ramos emerge from the vehicle carrying a rifle and wearing body armour, according to Erick Estrada from the Texas Department of Public Safety, who was speaking to CNN. The officer "engaged" the suspect but was unable to stop him, Mr Estrada said. Two more officers from Uvalde Police Department also attempted to stop Ramos but were unable to do so, and called for back-up. Several of the children who died have been identified. Family members confirmed the deaths of 10-year-olds Xavier Lopez and Amerie Jo Garza in statements on Tuesday night. Angel Garza said on Facebook that his daughter Amerie had been killed. "My little love is now flying high with the angels above. Please don't take a second for granted. Hug your family. Tell them you love them," he said. The two adults who died were both teachers - Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles. According to the school district's website, Mrs Garcia is a mother-of-four and had been a teacher for 23 years. The same website says that Ms Mireles had been a teacher for 17 years, has a daughter in college and loved running and hiking. Nearly 500 pupils are enrolled in the predominantly Hispanic school around 85 miles (135km) west of the city of San Antonio. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61573377

As common and beloved as dragons are in the games we play, I am sad to report they aren't actually real. Trust me on this: I spent about an hour looking at the sky this morning and I only saw birds, airplanes, and a couple of hippogriffs up there. On the plus side, paleontologists have unearthed the next best thing to an actual dragon. The fossils of a huge new species of pterosaur have been discovered, and the massive flying reptile has been named the "dragon of death" by paleontologists. Dragon of death. That's my kinda name. I could easily imagine it being a boss in a fantasy game. And the official species is called Thanatosdrakon amaru, which I think sounds even more badass. during the excavation for a construction project in Argentina's Mendoza Province. (This occurred back in 2012, but you know paleontologists, they have to use those tiny brushes on those fragile dinosaur bones, and that takes a while.) Two different specimens of the new pterosaur were found, and it truly was a tremendous beast—the wingspan of the larger of the two dragons measure about 30 feet. The dinosaur would stand roughly the same height as a giraffe while on the ground, according to project leader Leonardo Ortiz, one of the paleontologists who made the discovery and came up with the killer name. On the other hand, the scientific illustration of the dinosaur is, well… maybe a bit underwhelming for the "dragon of death" moniker. Maybe it's the goofy long neck, the skinny ankles and tiny wing-hands, or the oversized head that makes it look like the dragon's noggin would be flopping around like one of those dancing car wash balloon men. Or maybe the issue is that it's beige, like the interior of a rented Hyundai Elantra? Anyway, it doesn't look particularly fearsome, though it no doubt was. I'm not saying I don't like it! It's a very impressive giant flying dinosaur, and I have no doubt it would easily kill me if it hadn't died 86 million years ago. And scientists need to be accurate and not embellish their findings, which I can appreciate. At the same time, it's hard to see the words "dragon of death" and not wish it looked a bit more like something out of a D&D manual. Scales. Teeth. Pile of treasure. And so on. Some other details reported by the BBC: despite those huge wings and the fact that this was likely one of the earliest airborne predators on our planet, the dragon of death most likely spent most of its time on the ground (like a giraffe of death). The fact that the two specimens were found together also suggests these dinosaurs lived in groups. (They're moving in herds. They do move in herds.)

Privacy-first browser, Brave has unveiled its desktop browser version 1.39, which comes with Solana integration in a bid to improve Web 3 access for users. Before the announcement, Brave Browser had a linked wallet and a robust suite of tools for both novices and experts. Adding support for Solana means that users will now be able to enjoy lower fees and faster transactions. Brave joins Opera, which made a similar move when it integrated with Solana, Polygon, StarkEx, and other blockchain ecosystems in March. The plans for the integration were first shared in November 2021. Using desktop version 1.39, Brave Wallet users can transact SOL and SPL tokens directly from their Brave Wallet. Also, they will be able to purchase other cryptocurrencies with fiat through its integration with Ramp. To crown it all, the platform's native token, Basic Attention Token (BAT) has also been transmuted into an SPL token. Confirming the development, CEO and co-founder of Brave, Brendan Eich said, "As the leading Web 3 browser, Brave is now providing integration with Solana's blockchain so that users and developers can seamlessly transact on their fast, low-fee network." According to the announcement, the Solana integration is but one move among many others to improve web 3 ecosystem access. The firm also announced its integration with Ramp. The Ramp integration allows users to directly buy crypto within the Brave Wallet. According to Greg McEwan, Head of Marketing at Ramp, the integration will shorten the "painful process of converting fiat currencies to crypto." Likewise, Brave announced its partnership with the leading Solana NFT marketplace, Magic Eden. Using BAT tokens, Brave wallet users will soon be able to purchase NFTs directly from their wallets. Founder of Magic Eden, Sidney Zhang, stated, "The integration of Brave Wallet in our marketplace will further drive the ecosystem forward."

Ahead of the deadline of June 30, 2022, Apple has reminded developers that soon, every app on its App Store will require an account deletion process that should be 'easy to find in your app,' while not cutting any corners. Clarifying this in a recent news post(opens in new tab), Apple stated that developers won’t be able to get away with only offering options to temporarily disable or deactivate an account, as instead, it’s a steadfast rule that 'people should be able to delete the account along with their personal data.' Previously, developers only had until January 31 2022 to make the necessary changes that facilitated account deletion. However, this deadline was pushed back until the end of June in order to give developers more time for implantation and setting up any 'additional customer service flows to confirm and facilitate the account deletion process.' In an accompanying support post(opens in new tab), Apple went on to explain that by providing users the option to delete their account and any data associated with it, gives users more control over the personal data that they’ve shared. This is something that has become an increasingly prevalent concern thanks to legislation such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As Apple noted in its support post explaining this account deletion requirement, users having control over their personal data has become of increasing concern over the past few years, especially since at the same time, many apps and developers have been doing their best to make the process of account deletion or unsubscribing as difficult as possible. While it may not seem like the biggest change on the surface, simplifying this often confusing process would be a godsend to anyone who has tried unsubscribing or deleting accounts on some of the biggest apps such as Amazon or Facebook. Disappointingly, apps like these, and many others, often make it difficult to find account deletion options behind countless different settings menus and windows, that are designed to either tempt you into staying or frustrate you into giving up. As a result, Apple mandating an account deletion option that “should be easy to find in your app” is great progress for those users who tire of wading through those countless frustrating menus and pop-ups anytime they want to leave a service they’re finished with.

As you approach the orbit of your new home planet, Gliese 667CC(opens in new tab), you realize you made a terrible, terrible mistake: you didn’t download the latest firmware update for your ships’ communication protocols. While this would be a secondary concern around Earth’s orbit, where the servers holding the installable package reside and radio communications are speedy enough(opens in new tab) to make do, things are different when you’re 22 light-years away from humanity’s cradle. There’s no way for you to download an update for your ships’ protocols promptly; with no communications handshake happening, you’ll have to pay a hefty fine for the military ships sent to investigate your lack of response to the official channels. You haven’t even crossed Gliese’s atmosphere, and you’re already in debt. Ouch. Fortunately, researchers with the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have furthered the road towards an eventual quantum internet. The effort, published earlier this week in Nature(opens in new tab), drives us ever-so-slightly forward toward an intra-and, perhaps, extra-planetary communications network. When achieved, this quantum network will be able to operate at instantaneous speed, teleporting information between places in a secure, interference-and-snooping-free way. It happens because anyone trying to intercept qubit operations or read the qubit state would introduce errors in the computation or even lead the entangled qubits to decohere, losing the information in the process - a quirk dubbed the Observer Effect(opens in new tab) in quantum physics. “This means that the quantum computer can solve your problem and that it does not know what the problem is,” said Tracy Eleanor Northup, a researcher at the University of Innsbruck’s Institute for Experimental Physics. “It does not work that way today. Google knows what you are running on its servers.” The research takes advantage of the entanglement property of quantum physics, which allows for the “marriage” of two qubits so that changes affecting one of them automatically replicate them in the other - irrespective of such mundane concerns as distance. As a result, the qubits are no longer independent: they’re now a single system like a married couple. While entanglement between two qubits has been conquered for a while now, the researchers finally managed to expand the maximum number of entangled qubits from two to three - opening up the door for multilateral, instead of simply bilateral, communication. With quantum computing still being a nascent field, there are several ways to produce qubits - from electrons to quantum dots, passing through ion chains and Microsoft's exotic topological qubits; there are several approaches and materials with different strengths and weaknesses. For their experiment, which entangled the three qubits in systems 60 feet apart from each other, Dr. Hanson and his team used a nitrogen vacancy center — a tiny empty space in a synthetic diamond to trap electrons. But entanglement has already been shown to be viable(opens in new tab) up to 1,203 kilometers (748 miles) apart - and future research will focus on scaling the distance between entangled qubits while increasing the number of entangled "network nodes." This development, in turn, could enable a veritable quantum internet, where information only needs to be updated in a single physical location - such as a specific ship manufacturer's headquarters - with instantaneous propagation across the network of entangled qubits. Wouldn't that be handy for your firmware update antics above

Following a comprehensive site visit and review process, the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) has confirmed continued full reaccreditation to the University of Nevada, Reno. This voluntary and internationally recognized accreditation reflects the University’s commitment to go beyond the standards required by regulatory agencies to achieve excellence in animal care and use. AAALAC commended the faculty and staff involved for “providing and maintaining an excellent program” and cited the “program cohesiveness across all locations under the leadership of the Office of Animal Resource veterinarians” as being “especially noteworthy.” The University connects with animals in many ways, from those in research and teaching programs both in observed field settings and in campus laboratories, to those in the farm settings of the Nevada Experiment Station, part of the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. The complex animal care program is overseen by Animal Resources, part of Research & Innovation, and is further supported by the faculty-led Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. In their exit briefing, reviewers noted that of the AAALAC-accredited programs around the world, the University’s is especially impressive since it represents one of the widest varieties of animal care settings. The University’s animal care program even includes public-lands grazing at its Great Basin Research & Extension Center in Eureka, Nevada, and Gund Ranch Research & Training Facility near Austin, Nevada, both part of the Nevada Experiment Station. “There are many faculty, staff and students who connect with our animal care program, and our re-accreditation by the AAALAC affirms their commitment to quality, ethical care. Our Animal Resources team is one of the very best, and provides invaluable leadership and support,” said Mridul Gautam, vice president for research and innovation. Animal Resources Director and Campus Attending Veterinarian Ben Weigler describes the review by the AAALAC as rigorous and valued, adding it helps keep the focus on continuous improvement. Animal Resources includes two full-time veterinarians with backup faculty who provide on-call services around the clock, plus additional technicians and staff members, many certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. The team oversees animal care and regulatory compliance University-wide, facilitates training for those who work with animals, and helps develop curriculum and learning opportunities for students. “In so many ways the Animal Resources team goes above and beyond what’s expected or required,” said Charlene Hart, associate vice president for research administration and to whom Animal Resources reports. “Through their commitment and professionalism, they make an important contribution to research, teaching and service, and they take great pride in doing so.” The University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has an integral role. Working closely with Animal Resources, the faculty-led IACUC oversees the University's animal care and use programs, facilities and procedures, and its purview includes all animals in the University's programs for research and teaching across the span of basic sciences, biomedical research, and agricultural and wildlife settings. The IACUC reviews all requests to use vertebrate animals and works to ensure compliance with state, federal and international regulations, plus conducts inspections of areas where animals are housed and used. “The IACUC focuses on evaluating animal welfare and providing local oversight of institutional animal care and use programs. They have at least one public member who is not a scientist to help ensure completely unbiased ethical judgements for each project,” Weigler said. “They provide guidance toward the goal of attaining the highest quality of animal care coexistent with achieving the best possible scientific results.” “The successful renewal of the University’s AAALAC accreditation reflects the outstanding commitment of our Animal Resources team led by Dr. Benjamin Weigler, who provide the highest level of care for animals on our campus,” said Dean Burkin, University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine professor and chair of the University’s IACUC. “This success can also be attributed to our outstanding faculty, students and staff engaged in research and who demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare.” “We are partners to the researchers and scientists,” said Weigler, an accomplished veterinarian and researcher who joined the University in 2015. “In research, providing the latest standards of veterinary services around the clock for all the animals is not a choice; it’s a mandate.” In keeping with AAALAC standards, animals are involved in research only when there are no non-animal alternatives and when it is done in an ethical and humane way. The vast majority of animals involved in research at the University are rodents, such as mice and rats, bred for studies to advance medicine and science. Cows, sheep, birds, fish, large game, reptiles and amphibians, including various endangered or threatened species, are examples of the animals that are part of studies by University faculty. Even for observational research or field study, protocols approved by the IACUC must be in place to guide possible interactions with or injuries to the animals involved. AAALAC accreditation was first awarded to the University in 2007. A private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science, the Association conducts an on-site peer review by experts every three years. In addition to AAALAC’s review and IACUC’s oversight, the University’s animal program is reviewed annually, at a minimum, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is subject to oversight by the Office of Animal Laboratory Welfare, part of the National Institutes of Health. https://www.unr.edu/nevada-today/news/2022/animal-resources-reaccredited

Having your eyes checked regularly is extremely important, and even more, after you turn 30 and wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. This is because you need to keep up with the changes in your vision, if any, and ensure no new problem is beginning to develop. Some of these problems may not have physical symptoms until way later, making it all the important to visit an expert, said Dr Neeraj Sanduja, MBBS, MS – Ophthalmology, Ophthalmologist, Eye surgeon. “These eye tests are even more important if you are suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, or have a family history of eye disease. Of course, in between examinations, if you notice any changes or have injured your eye in any way then you must contact your eye doctor as soon as possible,” he said. During a routine eye exam, a doctor will review your personal and family history for any eye disease to see if you’re at any special risk for eye problems, and then conduct some of the following eye tests: 1. Vision: The doctor will check for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and also presbyopia or astigmatism. 2. Eye muscles coordination: During this, the doctor will move light in a set pattern to check your ability to use both eyes together. 3. Color testing: The doctor will ask you to describe some figures in a series of illustrations made up of numerous coloured circles which will help to test your ability to differentiate colour. 4. Pupil’s response to light: For this, the doctor will shine a light on your pupils and notice the reaction. 5. Fluid pressure measurement: The expert will measure the pressure of your eyes using a tonometer. High pressure can be an early indicator of glaucoma or other diseases. 6. Eyelid’s function and health: The doctor will examine the eyelids inside and out. 7. Peripheral vision: In this, the doctor will move an object to the end of your vision to make sure you can see it. 8. The interior and back of the eye: The doctor will use an instrument called ophthalmoscope to see through to the retina and your optic nerve at the back of your eye as this is where clues to many diseases first show up. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/mandatory-eye-tests-over-30-7818786/

To Ukrainians it was clear from the very start of Russia's invasion that this was no "special operation" to liberate the Donbas region, as Vladimir Putin had declared. It was all-out war. But in Russia it's a crime to call it that. Dozens of people have already been prosecuted under the "fake news" law, as it's known. They face up to 15 years behind bars for challenging the official line on Russia's invasion or criticising the military. It's a dramatic increase in censorship in Russia, where Vladimir Putin has spent his two decades in power removing opponents, stifling free speech and silencing the independent media: a dismantling of democracy that is having devastating consequences here in Ukraine. Vladimir Kara-Murza tried to warn of the danger. In a speech in the US in March, the Russian opposition activist lambasted Western leaders for seeking constant "resets" in relations with Mr Putin, allowing their countries to act as havens for tainted money and looking the other way even as Russia became ever less free. "The whole world now sees what the Putin regime is doing to Ukraine," Mr Kara-Murza told the Arizona House of Representatives, a fortnight into the war. "The bombing of maternity wards and hospitals and schools. The war crimes. These are war crimes." But in Russia uttering such words is also a crime now. A month after his speech, Mr Kara-Murza was picked up by police in Moscow and later charged with "spreading false information" about Russia's military. He's still in custody. The law he is accused of breaking was passed in March, soon after the invasion. And yet Ukrainian prosecutors have already registered more than 11,000 alleged war crimes. A Russian soldier has admitted in court to shooting a civilian. And the BBC has gathered its own evidence, including CCTV footage of the shooting of two civilians by Russian forces. Those returning to salvage what they can from the wreckage of Andriivka have more, powerful testimony. When Russia invaded Ukraine, many families fled Kyiv for nearby villages like this, thinking they would be safer away from the capital. Instead they spent weeks cowering in cold cellars as occupying soldiers drove tanks into their yards and dug trenches in their vegetable plots. After the Russians withdrew, in April, the village elder says the bodies of 13 residents were found here. "They had their hands tied behind their backs and had been shot in the head," says Anatoliy Kibukevych. He then names every one of the victims. The main road - the route taken by Russian tanks ordered to seize Kyiv - is lined with the rubble of homes: heaps of singed bricks with metal bedframes or pots and pans oddly marooned in the middle of them. Painted pleas that read "Children!" or "People!" on garden gates have been pierced by shrapnel. "Truth is the regime's main enemy," says Evgenia Kara-Murza, Vladimir's wife, from Washington DC, where she lives for safety reasons. "That's why I believe this regime is using this law to crush all dissent in Russia and to scare people into silence," "I'm sure Vladimir realised the risks were high. They have never been low for him," she says, with a reminder that her activist husband was poisoned twice in the past and nearly died. But he kept returning to Russia and speaking out. "He believes there comes a moment where you can't be afraid anymore and need to show to other people that they shouldn't be either." When the war in Ukraine started, Lilia Yapparova felt compelled to cover it. "I couldn't sleep, because people started to die… and I needed to be there," she told me in Kyiv, where for a while she was the only Russian reporter on the ground in Ukrainian-controlled areas. There are only three even now - all women from independent media outlets. It's a tiny contingent compared with the Russian state TV correspondents who stride through eastern Ukraine in military clothing, "Z" patches on their arms in support of Russian soldiers, talking about "denazification" and the "liberation" of cities like Mariupol. Ms Yapparova wanted to at least dent that solid wall of propaganda. "The only thing that matters for me right now is for the war to stop and for people from Russia to see what's really going on," she says. But that's a battle of its own, on top of the danger of working on Ukraine's frontlines. Meduza, the news site Ms Yapparova writes for, has been banned in Russia, like almost all independent outlets. Journalists and media have been labelled as "foreign agents" while Facebook and other social media are blocked. Meanwhile, state TV channels have all switched to wall-to-wall coverage of Russia's "special operation". "For now we lost the war with propaganda," Ms Yapparova concedes, describing how even people she knows personally are absorbing the official line. She feels a sense of responsibility for that, although the odds were stacked impossibly against her. And now she knows that every word she writes from Ukraine - true stories about the shooting of civilians, mass graves, terrible destruction - is putting her at risk of prosecution for "fake news". "I am ready for that. I am not covering my eyes. I see the law for what it is," the journalist says. "But I couldn't allow myself not to be here." It doesn't stop her worrying, though. "Constantly. It hurts sometimes to write because I can't hide facts, but am I going to jail for that? Anything can happen." For Michael Nacke the danger is already real. The young journalist left Russia before the war, escaping an environment that became increasingly repressive. He is now a wanted man for telling the truth. "I used the word 'war' instead of 'special operation'," he says of his "crime" as set-out by Russian investigators in a 91-page statement. "It doesn't matter which law they use against you, it's just to make you shut up." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61542365

The growth of Microsoft Teams has been one of the major success stories of the last few years, as the video conferencing platform saw a huge explosion in users during the pandemic. But juggling all the various tools and services within the online collaboration offering can often be a hassle, with the sheer amount of help on offer sometimes overwhelming. Fortunately, super-smart bots are set to soon arrive to help out some Microsoft Teams users. However, the bad news is that you almost certainly won't be one of them. That's because the company has revealed that bots are coming to Microsoft Teams environments for what it calls "GCC-High customers". These users are typically found within government IT teams, most often the US government (with GCC standing for Government Community Cloud) and the Department of Defense, where they have to abide by stricter compliance rules and regulations. Such users have to go through stricter validation and security processing to be able to use their software, with Microsoft designing and offering customized tools to address issues that these customers may face. It's a bit of a shame, as the new bots sound like they would be a great help to many everyday Microsoft Teams users. The update allows users to build and deploy customized bots within their own Microsoft Teams environment, tackling potential roadblocks or common issues that could be easily automated. The bots can also address line-of-business issues, boosting not just collaboration and communication, but also efficiency and productivity when using Teams - something we'd all no doubt appreciate. The feature is listed on the Microsoft 365 roadmap as rolling out now, with GCC-High Microsoft Teams users on Desktop, Android, iOS, Mac and Web all able to update. If the launch is a success and Microsoft Teams sees good engagement with the bots from GCC-High customers, we may see a more general launch sometime in the future. For now, we'll just have to wait and see

AMD has released a new Adrenalin driver to the public, version 22.5.2, featuring AMD's DX11 optimizations found previously in its May 2022 preview driver. This will give Radeon gamers access to the performance improvement found in some DX11 titles, without diverting to AMD's preview driver. Other improvements added to the driver include a new Radeon Super Resolution update, new game support, and a new feature called AMD Privacy View. The DX11 improvements are the biggest update worth mentioning with this new driver update. According to our previous coverage of these optimizations, RX 6000 series GPUs were seeing as much as 10-30% FPS improvement in the select few titles that were able to take advantage of the new API optimizations. Unfortunately, these impressive gains only apply to just a handful of titles. Still, we're glad to see that these changes have finally made their way to an official Adrenalin driver. Another update coming from the May 2022 Preview Driver is additional Smart Access Memory optimizations for Death Stranding and Watch Dogs: Legion. AMD says gamers can expect anywhere between a 6% to 24% performance increase in these two titles compared to Adrenalin version 22.5.1. The size of the increase depends on which RX 6000 model is being used. Additional game support has been added to the new driver including Sniper Elite 5 and Hitman 3's ray tracing update. Along with these additions, a new set of Vulkan extensions are supported as well. The last and final feature to come from the May 2022 driver in 22.5.2 is support for Radeon Super Resolution version 1.1. This new version includes a new sharpening filter that allows you to fine-tune the sharpness detail of RSR on a game-by-game basis. This brings RSR to feature parity with the Nvidia Image Scaling (NIS) counterpart. RSR support for AMD's new Ryzen 6000 series mobile CPUs featuring RDNA 2 graphics has also been added, which can give a healthy performance boost to integrated graphics at the cost of image quality. The final feature added to driver 22.5.2 is the introduction of AMD Privacy View. This new technology uses eye-tracking to hide parts of the screen you aren't looking at in an effort to block prying eyes from viewing sensitive data. With this new eye-tracking tech, AMD can also lock your computer when it sees you leaving your PC for additional security. The only hardware requirement you'll need is a webcam.

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Workers at the Boot Ranch shopping center in Palm Harbor are breathing a sigh of relief after seeing a nearby retention pond filled with water once again. Melissa Murray and Jaden Maldonado were surprised to learn the large retention pond behind their workplace was home to dozens of turtles and at least three alligators. The two had a few wildlife sightings from time to time, but their neighbors became especially visible when construction workers began to drain the concrete pond in April. "They started draining down the water and you could actually see some of the wildlife that are dead because they had no water and no food," said Maldonado. Various aquatic animals, including large softshell turtles and alligators, travel through a network of underground culverts to nearby retention ponds. When workers began cleaning up the largest of the retention ponds behind the shopping center, they blocked off access to the culverts, cutting off an escape route and important shade areas for animals. For five weeks they watched as water continued to dry up and several turtles and alligators became trapped in a bleak concrete pit. Maldonado and Murray say at least one alligator died. Fox 13 crews observed dead birds and frogs on the scene on Friday. Murray and Maldonado say construction workers ignored their pleas to avoid injuring the trapped animals with their heaving machinery and vehicles. They reached out to Florida Fish and Wildlife. FWC workers made several visits to the site, removing some turtles, but many more animals, including alligators, were left behind in what Murray and Maldonado describe as an increasingly dire situation. Finally, they contacted animal rescue groups for help. Wildlife rescuer Fairl Thomas says she was shocked by what she saw when she arrived. "It was just completely dry cement. There were some piles of muck, a little bit of water dripping around in the corners, and these animals that were huddled up in the corners desperately trying to get shade or any kind of moisture that they could," explained Thomas. Thomas says she contacted Shoppes of Boot Ranch property manager Walter Jakubik to ask for help to no avail. "It reached a point where it got argumentative and we were warned that we would be written up for trespassing if we're there around the retention pond and we're not there as shoppers, which obviously I was there to rescue turtles, not shop at Target," said Thomas. "Fortunately, no one came out and told me to leave." https://www.fox13news.com/news/they-were-out-here-to-die-animals-trapped-in-drained-retention-pond-get-relief-after-5-weeks

To celebrate 50 years of the BMW M department, the one designed for sports cars, the brand has decided to produce 1,000 examples of the BMW M4 CSL , a version with a maximum power of 550 hp (maximum speed 307 km / h), rear-wheel drive and less weight compared to the classic version. This is to all intents and purposes the fastest M ever, a mix that combines classic and modern: if in fact the car has road homologation, on the other hand it is still a car capable of doing 7 minutes and 20 seconds on the road. The 20.9-kilometer North Loop of the Nürburgring. The secret behind this greater power also lies in the 100 kilograms less , not just lightening: CSL stands for Competition Sport Lightweight), and with this modification the car reaches a height of 1,625 kg. To allow a value of this type was the removal of the rear sofa (as you can see in the photo), the choice of using carbon ceramic brakes combined with 19 "and 20" alloy wheels and M Carbon shell seats. As for the coloring, the car will be released in the special Frozen Brooklyn Gray Metallic color with a dedicated livery, but it will also be customizable with Alpine White and Sapphire Black Metallic colors. For the rest, the interior focuses on "savings: if in fact BMW is used to giving its customers the ultimate in luxury, this M4 focuses entirely on weight and power, requiring changes to make it lighter than luxury. https://www.automoto.it/news/bmw-m4-csl-arriva-in-soli-1000-esemplari.html
