If you heard rumors that Google was working on not one but two foldable smartphones in the past few months (and years), it turns out those mumblings were actually true, despite the fact that the company only eventually announced one of them, namely the Pixel Fold. Apparently there was a second foldable smartphone created by the same team that was in charge of the Pixel Fold. This other device apparently "wasn't good enough" which is why it was eventually canceled and never made it to market. The team felt like it should only launch devices that are good enough or better than what is out there already. Unfortunately, this confession of sorts, recorded as part of Google's official Made by Google podcast, does not contain any more details about this device. So we don't know if it had the exact same form factor as the Pixel Fold, or if, perhaps, it went the 'flip' route instead. We may never know, but the point is that the search giant's development team considered the Pixel Fold the better device of the two, and that's why it lived and the other one didn't. https://www.gsmarena.com/google_developed_a_second_foldable_alongside_the_pixel_fold_but_canceled_it-news-58710.php

The physics will also be improved with more customizable parameters and greater accuracy, while the playerβs rivals will be managed by an artificial intelligence that will feature different levels of antagonism, making them more or less aggressive when overtaking. Making a new-gen only game gave us the possibility of offering all these features at the same time, even with 20 opponents on the track. RIDE 5 allows to ride on real or original circuits and roads, to develop your own bikes, to change their livery (using your own or those created by other users, thanks to the in-game Editor) and to customize the rider. And above all, RIDE 5 gives you the possibility to ride motorcycles that are not the ones you see in the world championship β prerogative of a small handful of super riders β on the contrary, you can ride the bikes you see at the dealer, the ones youβve always dreamt of buying or that, maybe, you already own. RIDE 5 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Epic on August 24. https://www.operationsports.com/ride-5-gameplay-trailer-revealed-with-producer-blog/

The government is discussing plans for supermarkets to introduce a cap on the price of basic food items to help tackle the rising cost of living. A voluntary agreement with major retailers could see price reductions on basic food items like bread and milk. Food prices rose by 19.1% in the year to April - its second highest rate in 45 years. Downing Street sources have stressed that there are no plans for a mandatory price cap. The idea of a cap or freeze on basic food items, as first reported by the Daily Telegraph, is said to be at the "drawing board stage". Supermarkets are expected to be allowed to select which items they would cap and only take part in the initiative, modelled on a similar agreement in France, on a voluntary basis. Health Secretary Steve Barclay told BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that "this is about having constructive discussions with supermarkets about how we work together, not about any element of compulsion". He added that the government was also keen to protect "suppliers who themselves face considerable pressures". For Labour, shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Ashworth told the same programme that the reports were "extraordinary", saying "Rishi Sunak is now like a latter day Edward Heath with price controls". Why food bills aren't shrinking - five things to know Food prices 'worryingly high' as sugar and milk soar Some supermarket food prices 'should fall' soon However there is some doubt over what impact a price cap of food will have. The British Retail Consortium says that the government should focus more on cutting red tape rather than "recreating 1970s-style price controls". "This will not make a jot of difference to prices. High food prices are a direct result of the soaring cost of energy, transport, and labour, as well as higher prices paid to food manufacturers and farmers," says Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the BRC."As commodity prices drop, many of the costs keeping inflation high are now arising from the muddle of new regulation coming from government. Rather than recreating 1970s-style price controls, the government should focus on cutting red tape so that resources can be directed to keeping prices as low as possible." Earlier this week the boss of the Sainsbury's denied that his supermarket had been profiteering. Simon Roberts said his business was "absolutely not" putting prices up to bolster profits - known as "greedflation". He told the BBC that Sainsbury's and other grocery chains had spent money to "battle inflation" and avoid passing all of the rising costs onto consumers. The competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, has said it will look at how the grocery market is operating. At a meeting with food manufacturers last week the chancellor Jeremy Hunt stressed widespread concern about prices and agreed to engage with the industry on possible measures to ease pressure on household budgets. Mr Hunt has said he would back an increase in interest rates if it curbed higher prices and soaring inflation - even if that risked plunging the UK into recession. "Businesses don't have a price cap like consumers do and yet some smaller businesses buy energy like consumers do so it's been really hard for them to keep going," Shevaun Haviland, director general of the British Chamber of Commerce, told the same programme. The rate of inflation can be calculated in various ways, but the main measure is the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) - which tracks the prices of everyday items in an imaginary "basket of goods". The last figure for CPI was 8.7% in the year to April, down from 10.1% in March and 11.1% in October. Soaring prices of some food products has meant inflation has not come down by as much as many predicted. Experts have warned that expensive food is set to overtake energy bills as the "epicentre" of the cost-of-living crisis. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65736944

It is only the seventh case of the deadly disease reported in the U.S. since it first emerged in the country in 2003. A rare case of mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), has been detected at a slaughter plant in South Carolina but poses no threat to humans or other cattle. It is only the seventh confirmed case of the extremely deadly disease ever recorded in the U.S. Officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the discovery in a statement released May 19. A 5-year-old beef cow belonging to a herd from Tennessee tested positive for BSE after being deemed unfit for slaughter and undergoing routine testing. "This animal never entered slaughter channels and at no time presented a risk to the food supply or to human health in the United States," USDA representatives wrote in the statement. An investigation into the exact cause of the infection is ongoing, but it is likely an isolated case, they added. BSE is a progressive neurological disorder of cattle caused by proteins called prions; prions are found on the surface of cells, but in diseases like mad cow, these proteins fold abnormally and can cause other, healthy prions to do the same. In BSE, the prions affect proteins in the brain and central nervous system, causing a range of symptoms, including behavioral changes, coordination problems, weight loss, decreased milk production and eventually, death, according to the USDA. There are two forms of BSE: classical BSE, which develops when a cow ingests infected material, such as meat or bone meal, made from an infected cow in their feed; and atypical BSE, which develops spontaneously in older cattle. The recently diagnosed cow had atypical BSE, which poses less of a concern for animal welfare officials. Atypical vs. classical BSE Both classical and atypical BSE are caused by prions, but each of the two forms has a unique prion structure and is triggered in different ways. Classical BSE was first discovered in 1986 in the U.K.. The BSE outbreak peaked there in January 1993, when cases spiked to around 1,000 a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scientists eventually discovered that the prions were being transmitted through the cows' feed, which contained infected brain and spinal tissues left over from the butchering of the animals. In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of use of ruminant β a group of hoofed, herbivorous grazing mammals that includes cattle, bison, goats, sheep and deer β protein in feed for other ruminants, and it later prohibited the use of certain high-risk cattle tissues in feed for all animals, according to the USDA. Atypical BSE appears to sometimes form spontaneously in cattle that are normally older than 8 years, which makes the disease's emergence in a 5-year-old cow unusual. It is currently unclear what triggers atypical BSE. It can take three to six years for the symptoms of either BSE form to appear after infection, and there is currently no cure or vaccine for the disease, according to USDA. Can humans get mad cow disease? Humans cannot get BSE directly, but they can develop a similar and equally deadly type of prion disease known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) by eating food products made from infected cattle. vCJD causes symptoms similar to BSE and also results in death. However, it is extremely rare. As of 2019, only 232 people worldwide have ever been diagnosed with vCJD, according to the FDA. In an unusual case, a lab technician in France died in June 2019 from vCJD after accidentally injecting herself with BSE prions through her protective equipment as she was studying the disease in 2010. The World Organisation for Animal Health recognizes the U.S. as having negligible risk for BSE, and this new case will not change that, USDA representatives wrote. https://www.livescience.com/animals/land-mammals/extremely-rare-case-of-mad-cow-disease-detected-in-the-us

For the classy customer who wanted unbeatable style, outstanding performance and a generous helping of that famous American V8 grunt, the Jensen Interceptor was a very welcome addition to a vast array of grand tourers when it arrived in 1966. There was also a slightly longer and pricier version, the FF, which had the double distinction of being the first production car equipped with four-wheel drive (instead of the standard rear-wheel drive) and an anti-lock braking system. With a 6.3-litre big-block Chrysler engine giving it more than 250bhp and a top speed of nearly 140mph, Jensenβs Interceptor must have seemed as fast and modern as the RAFβs own interceptor, the BAC Lightning, when blasting past breathless little Morris 1100s and Ford Anglias on the motorway. Throttle response was lazy and the three-speed automatic gearbox was never in a hurry, but none of that really mattered, because you could nevertheless always rely on its strong punch for a quick getaway or an effortless overtake. Surprisingly for such a large and heavy car, the Interceptor was equally as competent around corners as it was in straight lines, especially so in 4WD FF form. This dynamism was mostly thanks to the Interceptorβs extra-rigid all-steel body and, from 1968, its power steering. Its pliant suspension and plush leather seats made long journeys a dream β provided that your wallet filled up as quickly as the fuel tank emptied. Indeed, the Interceptorβs body came from Carrozzeria Touring, and its interior wouldnβt have felt out of place in the famous Italian design houseβs usual Aston Martin or Alfa Romeo creations, either. Almost every facet was adorned with varnished wood or luxurious leather, cradling the driver and up to three passenger in fine comfort. Air conditioning was available and, even more importantly, so were lighters for your next rothmans. The Interceptor was given a mild facelift in 1969 (gaining a bulkier dashboard) and then a more comprehensive one in 1971, when engine displacement was increased to 7.2 litres. This yielded marginal improvements to power output and top speed, although the real advance was in torque. As the 1960s faded into the 1970s and the economy started to tank, worsened by the oil crisis of 1973, the po[CENSORED]rity of the Interceptor understandably declined, and this combined with the troubled launch of the vital new Jensen-Healey roadster resulted in Jensen entering liquidation. However, this doesnβt change the fact that the Interceptor was a groundbreaking piece of engineering, especially so in FF form. It was a car that showed what the British car industry could be: an innovative powerhouse with the ability to compete with the worldβs best. No wonder there have been several efforts over the years to revive it in various ways - and why itβs now a highly desirable classic surrounded by a good support network. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars-used-car-buying-guides/used-car-buying-guide-jensen-interceptor

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says captain Harry Maguire has a decision to make on his future at the club. The 30-year-old England defender made only 16 appearances in the Premier League for United this season. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been Ten Hag's preferred centre-back pairing in his first season in charge at Old Trafford. "No-one would be happy with this situation," Ten Hag told The Times. "He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100% effort. "So he handles that situation well and he's in that manner and in his captaincy he's important for the squad." Maguire has made some costly errors this season, most recently in last month's 3-0 Europa League defeat by Sevilla. Ten Hag added: "He has high competition there [at centre-back] with Raphael Varane, who's fantastic. "Let's say I'm happy he's here and when we needed him he did his job. But it's also a decision he has to make." Maguire arrived at United in 2019 from Leicester for Β£80m, a world-record fee for a defender, and his contract runs until 2025. He played in all five of England's World Cup games in 2022 and has been selected for the upcoming Euro qualifiers, but manager Gareth Southgate has said he is concerned by his lack of playing time at United. While Ten Hag did not confirm whether Maguire would be a United player next season, the former Ajax boss said that goalkeeper David de Gea would be staying for the 2023-24 campaign. De Gea has been the club's first-choice keeper this season and won the Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League. Asked if the 32-year-old would still be at Old Trafford next season, Ten Hag replied: "Yes, but I will not say he will always be my number one because in a club like United there must be competition in all positions." United play Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday with the hope of denying their city rivals' bid to match the Treble won by Sir Alex Ferguson's team in 1999. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65749368

The new president of Africa's largest democracy, Nigeria, has used his inaugural address to make a major policy announcement to ease pressure on government finances. Bola Tinubu said the decades-long subsidy on petroleum products was being scrapped. "Fuel subsidy is gone," he told a packed crowd in the capital, Abuja. He won disputed elections with a promise to renew hope - but he faces tough economic and security challenges. It is not clear when the new policy will kick in, but ending the subsidy will lead to a rise in the price of petrol and could have a knock on effect on other prices. Previous Nigerian governments have tried and failed to end the subsidy that was first introduced in the 1970s. Despite its oil wealth, Nigeria is unable to refine enough crude to meet local demands so it imports petroleum products, which are then sold at a government-set price. But the subsidy is a huge drain on public finances. Last year it gulped 4.3trn naira ($9.3bn; Β£7.5bn) and for the first half of this year, 3.36trn naira was budgeted for it. The new president said the subsidy could no longer be justified and that the funds would instead be spent on public infrastructure and to improve the lives of people. Mr Tinubu, 71, takes over from Muhammadu Buhari, who has stepped down at the end of his two terms. He is under pressure to tackle the economic crisis. Inflation is running at its highest rate for nearly 18 years, one in three people are unemployed and the output of the vital oil industry is shrinking. Mr Tinubu acknowledged these challenges in his speech, saying his team would release its economic roadmap in the coming weeks but pointed out that interest rates were too high. The five tests awaiting Nigeria's new president He won the election in February with 37% of the vote. His main rival Atiku Abubakar polled 29%, and Labour's Peter Obi 25%. Mr Tinubu's victory is being challenged in court by the two opposition candidates. They say the outcome was mani[CENSORED]ted. But Mr Tinubu said he was "spreading his hand across the political divide", and described the election as hard-fought and of a better quality than previous ones. He also said that women and young people would feature prominently in his administration and hinted at employing more security personnel to tackle the security crisis, which includes kidnappings for ransom. As a former governor of Lagos, he revitalised Nigeria's commercial hub - no easy job - and his allies say he will take the same technocratic and thoughtful approach to running the vast country of more than 200 million people. But opponents of the new president say he has lost the vitality he used to forcefully modernise Lagos. Since the election he has travelled abroad twice, raising questions about his health. In 2021 he spent months in London being treated for an undisclosed illness. He has brushed off the criticism, saying the job does not require the fitness of an Olympic athlete - and his associates are quick to remind everyone that US President Joe Biden is older, at 80. But if Mr Abubakar and Mr Obi have their way then Mr Tinubu may not be in power for very long. The election tribunal is expected to start hearing the main arguments in their case on Tuesday and a ruling should be given within the next six months. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65737846
