  3. Huawei's latest flagship TWS earphones - the Freebuds Pro 2 - come as a natural evolution of the first Freebuds Pro. They are co-engineered with Devialet and having spent considerable time testing them we are now ready to share what we hope will be some useful impressions. We had the Silver Blue set, which is definitely the belle of the ball - there are also Black and White options for more traditional looks. Picking a bold color for an accessory usually means it will be an accent in one’s apparel, and in this case, the Freebuds Pro 2 in Blue are definitely a head-turner. The case has a matte coating and mirror-like finish on the hinge where we can also see Devialet’s logo. The earbuds themselves are glossy and are massive fingerprint magnets, which quickly degrades their looks. Huawei introduced a rectangular design of the stem in the first Freebuds, but now the edges are better-rounded and the whole earbud looks seamless and much better overall. The case supports wireless charging but unusually the coil is placed it at the front. When you place the case on the wireless charger, you have the Devialet logo facing the top, but obviously you can't easily operate the lid. The other elements of interest are a USB-C port on the bottom and a reset key on the right-hand side. The retail box has a USB-A cable and two extra sizes of rubber tips for the buds. The Freebuds Pro 2 support all phones, but you only get the AI Life companion app on Android from Huawei's AppGallery. The earbuds themselves are pretty capable but it is Huawei’s app that makes the difference. It can be used to toggle Noise Control modes, set different Sound effects and edit gestures. There is also a β€œTip fit test” that helps you select the right set of rubber tips from the ones supplied in the box. Our experience showed that it's a little redudant because we had already selected the ones that felt comfortable and the app merely confirmed our choice is correct. Comfort is crucial for TWS earphones, but sadly it's a strictly personal matter as everyone's ears are a little different. For what it's worth this reviewer felt no discomfort from having these buds in the ear for the past weeks. There was also the occasional jog at the local running track and trails in the mountain just outside the city - the Freebuds stayed in the ear to the point of forgetting they are even there. The Freebuds Pro 2 design of the stems is not their most unusual feature, it their touch navigation. Huawei decided to prevent accidental touches to the outer side and now you have to pinch with two fingers. The essence of the gestures have remained the same - one pinch is Play/Pause, two pinches are Next song, three pinches are Previous song; Pinch & hold is Noise Control; Swipe is on the side and controls the volume. All of them are customizable and can even be turned off. What we found awkward is the attempt to pinch two or three times. It’s not a classic pinch, there has to be at least 1 sec (1000 ms) per gesture and often it wasn’t detected correctly, so I can say it didn’t feel great when listening to a podcast. Yes, pinch and hold works great, but that’s the only gesture I could reliably use. And it's not like I didn't give them time to get used to - I struggled with this for the past five weeks. Audio performance is the most important feature of TWS earphones, and the FreeBuds Pro 2 really impress here. This comes as no surprise - the previous Freebuds Pro were among the best earphones of this form factor we ever tested, and obviously, Huawei’s partnership with Devialet helped tune this properly as well. The drives selected and the software tuning achieve class-leading audio experience. First of all, there is a Dual Sound system that consists of a quad-magnet 11mm dynamic driver and a separate UHF planar diaphragm driver. Usually these elements are in one module but Huawei managed to split them claiming that it really cleans up the output. In practice, they deliver the deepest bass we have ever heard from such small buds, as well as clean vocals. Here’s where AI Life comes in handy - the app offers four key Sound effects, which is basically a fancy equalizer, and we loved the Bass boost preset. You can create your custom equalizer too, and turn on some more software features including Smart HD and HD Voice that aim to enahnce the output further, but they obviously perform well only with certain tracks and hurt battery life. Speaking of voice calls, each bud has three microphones - two outward, directed towards the mouth, and a third that sits on the inside and takes care of external sounds to offer noise cancellation. The Freebuds Pro 2 offer three main noise control options - Awareness that boosts surrounding noises and has a toggle for enhancing voices. It does a great job and sometimes can even become overwhelming in a supermarket with all the people around and registers beeping. The second option is Off and is the default one. The third option is Noise Cancelling. It has four strength levels and it does a solid job at the higher levels. The Freebuds Pro 2 case has a 580 mAh battery, and each bud has a 55 mAh battery. Huawei's claimed endurance and our findings in the different noise cancelling modes are listed in the chart below. Mode on a single chargeHuawei Labs PlaytimeReal-life Playtime Noise cancelling4 hours220 minutes/ 3 hours 40 minutes Off6.5 hours360 minutes/ 6 hours Awareness (not recommended for a prolonged use)N/A200 minutes/ 3h 20 min Huawei promised 40 minutes for charging the earbuds from 0 to 100% in the case. We charged the buds at least 20 times and the average is just shy of 45 minutes - pretty decent. The company also claimed the Freebuds Pro 2 case fills up in 60 minutes, provided the buds aren’t inside. Our real-life charging times were consistently in the 70 to 75 minutes window. Wireless charging takes twice as long - up to 2.5 hours from 0 to 100%, so if you are in a hurry plug in a cable. Huawei did an impressive job with the Freebuds Pro 2 - unrivaled sound, sleek design and solid battery life, combined with excellent noise cancelling. Priced at €199 they certainly aren't cheap, but they still feel like a great deal. Even more so when you factor in the freebies Huawei offers in most of its online stores - like a free Watch Band 7 or a discounted Scale 3. This is clearly a device worth buying and we can only recommend it so much before we run out of superlatives. https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_freebuds_pro_2_review-news-55238.php
  4. James Webb may have captured an image of its first supernova. The team behind the space telescope shared a group of images and a brief report on the possible transient earlier this month. According to the report, the team believes that it discovered an infrared transient in the galaxy SDSS J141930.11+525159.3. James Webb may have captured its first supernova The team believes that James Webb may have spotted its first supernova due to the object’s brightness. The object is much brighter than the rest of the galaxy. And, when Webb observed the galaxy five days apart, the object had dimmed slightly. This, the team says, is in line with supernova behavior. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to say if the event was a supernova. At least, not yet. The James Webb team says it will need more time with the object to tell if it was a supernova. But, it is a very good candidate, Mike Engesser with Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) told Inverse. The new series of images released by James Webb isn’t as startling as the previous snapshots we’ve seen. However, it is still quite remarkable. The image is broken down into four different sections. It includes both captures from James Webb and Hubble. The fourth image in the collection showcases the difference between them all. Looking closely, you can almost see the possible supernova James Webb picked up. Full of surprises The James Webb wasn’t built to observe these types of events, though. Instead, it’s meant to study distant planets and detect water and other signs of life. So, the fact that it possibly captured an image of a supernova is exciting. The space telescope continues to exceed expectations despite being slightly damaged. The galaxy James Webb spotted the supernova in is between three to four billion light years away. As a result, the difference we’re seeing is the slow fading light of an explosion that happened three to four billion years ago. When a star dies and a supernova occurs, the entire event transpires in a fraction of a second. The resulting fireball can grow and brighten, though. The current hypothesis is that James Webb spotted this supernova just moments after its brightness peaked. As a result, the dimming of the transient several days later could be a strong indication that it was indeed a supernova. https://bgr.com/science/james-webb-telescope-spots-its-first-supernova-in-remarkable-new-photo/

  7. ASHINGTON β€” The United States conducted a drone strike over the weekend that killed a Qaeda target in Kabul, the first attack since American forces left Afghanistan last year, according to multiple U.S. officials. U.S. officials said the strike was not conducted by the military, suggesting that the operation was carried out by the C.I.A. Agency officials declined to comment. A senior administration official said that the operation was successful and that there were no civilian casualties. The White House was expected to brief reporters later Monday night, a second administration official said. Sign up for The Morning newsletter from The New York Times A statement from the Taliban condemned the operation and said the strike was conducted on a residential house in Kabul’s Sherpur area, a wealthy downtown neighborhood that officials from the Taliban government have frequented. An investigation by Taliban authorities concluded that the attack was carried out by American drones, the statement said, though it provided no evidence to support the claims. Taliban officials believe the Doha agreement β€” which outlined the terms for the American troop withdrawal from Afghanistan β€” prohibits American strikes, something U.S. officials dispute. Residents in Kabul blamed Pakistan for possibly helping with the airstrike. According to one American analyst, the house that was struck was owned by a top aide to Sirajuddin Haqqani, a senior official in the Taliban government whom American officials say is close to senior Qaeda figures. The analyst said pictures of the strike posted on social media suggested a strike by an RX9, a hellfire missile armed with long blades aimed at killing targets with kinetic energy to minimize major collateral damage. In the months since the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, American military and diplomatic officials have been discussing with allies where to reposition American forces for strikes on high-value targets in Afghanistan. This so-called over-the-horizon strategy is still in its infancy, and talks about positioning forces in neighboring Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have proceeded slowly. But the United States has plenty of capability to send unmanned drones as well as manned attack aircraft within striking distance of Afghanistan, from land bases along the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and even the United States. Three U.S. officials reached on Monday said that the strikes were not carried out by the Defense Department or United States Central Command, the combatant command with responsibility for Afghanistan, leaving open the possibility that the strike was carried out by the C.I.A. J. Todd Breasseale, the acting Pentagon press secretary, declined to comment on the strike. The U.S. government is currently reviewing its policy on drone strikes against terrorist targets. While the military generally conducts strikes in established war zones, the C.I.A. carries out the operations in areas where the United States wants a measure of secrecy over its actions. Because the Taliban government opposes any drone strikes in its territory, the United States may have preferred to use the C.I.A. to conduct the operation. While the C.I.A. has its own drones, it will also use military drones, with authority of the strikes handing over to the agency as the aircraft enters into airspace where Defense Department aircraft are not authorized to operate. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/us-drone-strike-said-to-have-killed-qaeda-target-in-afghanistan/ar-AA10cn7Q?li=BBnb7Kz

  11. Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones are suggested to mostly use Snapdragon chipsets, Qualcomm has indicated. While answering a question in the Qualcomm earnings call for the period ending June 30, 2022, Cristiano Amon, President and Chief Executive Officer explained that the share of Snapdragon chips used in Galaxy S series phones has increased and will continue to be so. He noted that the US-based chipmaker has extended its partnership with Samsung expanding the use of Snapdragon platforms for future premium Samsung Galaxy products globally. β€œThe way you should think about it is [that] Snapdragon will power their Galaxy product line, their Galaxy flagship products. And what I can say at this point is we were 75 percent on Galaxy S22 before the agreement….we're going to be much better than that on Galaxy S23 and beyond,” Amon explained while replying to a question. This suggests that a majority of Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones will be fitted with the Qualcomm's next Snapdragon flagship and not Samsung's own Exynos SoCs. It is to be noted that Samsung has been launching its Galaxy S series with Exynos chipsets in some markets. Amon also said that Qualcomm has also extended its partnership with the South Korean company. β€œIt's a multiyear agreement. And it's β€” that's probably what I can tell you. You should think about us powering their devices globally. In addition to Galaxy smartphones, the agreement includes PCs, tablets, extended reality and more. The extension encompasses 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies and devices and will also include future 6G standards and products,” the executive said. The development comes about three weeks after TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones may only use Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoCs worldwide. He claimed that Snapdragon SoCs powered about 70 percent of Galaxy S22 smartphones β€” which is nearer to the number that Amon mentioned in his reply. It is also to be noted that Qualcomm has not explicitly said that the Galaxy S23 series will solely be powered by Snapdragon flagship chips. Kuo also claimed that Qualcomm's flagship 5G chip SM8550 is made by TSMC 4nm process and Samsung Exynos 2300 is made by Samsung 4nm process. The Snapdragon SM8550 is said to be optimised for TSMC's design rule, giving it advantages over the SM8450 and SM8475 in terms of computing power and power efficiency. https://gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/samsung-s23-qualcomm-snapdragon-sm8550-soc-exynos-2300-cristiano-amon-galaxy-3204637#pfrom=home-po[CENSORED]r
  12. Huawei brought the new foldable Mate Xs 2 back in May, and we were reporting on the ground with first impressions and hands-on experience. Back then the device was in limited supply but now Huawei is bringing it to the store shelves and we got our hands on one unit. The Mate Xs 2 ships in three colors, and our unit is White. The finish on the back is leathery but since the phone folds outwards, the color is more of an afterthought. Still, it feels nice on the hands when the Mate is unfolded. We love how thin the phone is in its base - it is just 5.4 mm, with the camera bump doubling it to 11.1 mm, which is also the total thickness of the folded phone. The panel is manufactured by BOE and we love the fact it virtually has no creases - we had to look hard to find some. The unfolded 7.8” screen has no glass to shield it from the elements, but it has a pre-applied plastic protector. It already has some minor scuffs which thankfully are not visible when the device is being used. When the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is folded, the front side becomes a 6.5” screen, while the back side remains dark. It can be used as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the main cameras, though. We will look deeper in our full review to establish whether HarmonyOS 2.0 has features that enable the second display. Thankfully, there is a special protective case in the retail box that covers the rear part of the display. The Huawei ecosystem is getting increasingly feature rich and this phone comes with Petal Search, Petal Maps, and AppGallery and even brings app suggestions to download directly onto the home screen. Huawei Mate Xs 2 has an attractive form factor and promising cameras. Its foldable design is a bit vulnerable with the whole display being exposed, but there's no denying its impressive looks and functionality benefits. We’ll go through all the use case scenarios in our review to determine whether it is worth the €1,999 price tag. The tests are already underway, so stay tuned. https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_mate_xs_2_in_for_review-news-55193.php
  13. BMW has been expanding its SUV stable of late, thanks to the addition of cars like the iX. However, there’s still a place in the hearts of many drivers for the X3, long hailed as an excellent SUV option for those that want a mix of luxury and sportiness. For 2022, BMW has given the X3 a few modest tweaks, including the addition of a hybrid system to make the ride even smoother. But BMW isn’t the only manufacturer to expand on its SUV efforts. In the last year or so, we’ve seen a number of electric SUVs and crossovers β€” and many of them make a seriously compelling case for themselves. Does the 2022 BMW X3 M40i do enough to retain its place as a top competitor in the SUV space? I’ve been driving it for a while now to find out. 2022 BMW X3 M40i exterior design The side-profile of the X3 definitely shows the fact that it’s a mid-size SUV, with a slightly sloped roofline that curves down into the back of the car. There’s a small upper spoiler for style points, and the taillights are sculpted in a way that looks modern and interesting. The X3 is available in a few different colors, and our review model is the Blue Metallic, which looks great. The wheels on our model are the 20-inch M double-spoke wheels, which I also love. 2022 BMW X3 M40i interior design The BMW familiarity extends to the inside of the car. Like all other modern BMWs, the X3 boasts a high-quality tan-colored stitched leather throughout, and generally, it looks and feels great. One of the best things about this particular BMW, however, is how spacious it is on the inside. The higher roof helps ensure plenty of headroom in both the front and the back, and the oversized windows give plenty of visibility no matter the height of the driver. The space extends to the trunk too. I happened to be reviewing this car when my parents and brother flew into town, and I was easily able to fit three large suitcases in the trunk. The trunk boasts 28.7 cu-ft of space with the rear seats up, and an impressive 62.6 cu-ft of space with them down. At the front there’s a good selection of physical buttons for climate controls, and the car, in general, has three climate zones, so the rear passengers can have their own controls. There are also USB-C ports dotted throughout the car, which is handy. 2022 BMW X3 M40i infotainment The BMW X3 M40i features BMW’s iDrive 7 infotainment system, which I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with. The design of it is fine, though it still looks a little dated and cluttered. It’s centered around a customizable home screen, followed by a few screens of β€œapps” that you can dive into. Again, it works fine, and it’s better than some others. It’s also relatively responsive, which is always helpful. Of course, you don’t have to use iDrive 7 much if you don’t want to. The car comes with Android Auto and CarPlay through a wireless connection. Unlike some other BMWs, I never really experienced any connectivity issues with CarPlay Wireless, but maybe I just got lucky. 2022 BMW X3 M40i performance The 2022 BMW X3 M40i comes equipped with a 3.0-liter i6 engine, but perhaps even more interesting is that BMW has also included a mild-hybrid 48-volt starter-generator. The result is that the car gets 382-hp, and 369 lb-ft of torque. It can get from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Yeah, it’s pretty quick. Fast acceleration is only part of the picture though. The car is responsive and smooth. It handles easily around corners, with little lean despite its taller stature. It’s really a joy to drive, regardless of the drive mode that you’re in. 2022 BMW X3 M40i driver assist As you would expect, the BMW X3 M40i comes with a few driver-assist features that can help make it easier to drive and park. You’ll get basics, like a backup camera and blind-spot monitoring. You’ll also get the 360-degree camera view, which has fast become one of my favorite features on modern cars. BMW in general is lagging a little behind some of the competition when it comes to autonomous driving tech, but depending on the options you get, you’ll still get adaptive cruise control, which can be helpful in stop-and-go traffic. And, you’ll get a lane assistant. Conclusions The BMW X3 M40i is a luxurious SUV that’s easy to handle and quick off the mark. It’s not cheap, but if what you’re looking for is luxury and spaciousness, then the BMW X3 M40i is an excellent option. The competition The BMW X3 M40i is a great option, but it’s not without competition. Most notably, the car goes up against the likes of the Genesis GV70, which is perhaps a slightly better option thanks to its stunning design and excellent performance. That said, you really can’t go wrong ewith the X3 M40i. https://bgr.com/reviews/2022-bmw-x3-m40i-review/
  14. After millions of years of dinosaur rule, the Cretaceous Period came to change forever the path of evolution on Earth. It was spring. After a period of prosperity, an asteroid of approximately 180 kilometers in diameter hit the Earth. The blow was inserted in the current Yucatan Peninsula, and caused one of the most devastating ecological imbalances that our planet has faced in history. This period of instability, climate change and mass extinction is known as the Cretaceous Period. We suggest: Antarctica was a lush jungle full of life 90 million years ago What are the characteristics of the Cretaceous Period? The Cretaceous period was "the last segment of the Mesozoic era," explains Live Science. It is historically situated between 145 million years and ending 66 million years ago in Prehistory. Back then, dinosaurs still ruled the Earth's seas and continents. The name of this period in the Prehistoric comes from 'crete', which translates from Latin as gis. This is due, according to the United States National Park Service, to the impressive chalk deposits that date back to that time. Parallel to the wide diversity of plant and animal species that proliferated on Earth, the supercontinent Pangea began to fragment. These landmass changes would redefine the natural history of our planet. At that time, the configuration of the continents was changing. This would reshape global geology, as well as the distribution of ecosystems around the world, explains National Geographic History. Also read: The asteroid that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs hit Yucatan in spring What dinosaurs lived at that time? According to a study recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, by the mid-Cretaceous Period po[CENSORED]tions of insects and flowering plants proliferated. At the same time, angiosperms "diversified rapidly," according to the National Park Service. The institution describes this dizzying diversification as 'mysterious' and 'exquisite'. Regarding which dinosaurs inhabited the planet, "dominant groups were modified and many new types evolved," explains National Geographic History. Gigantic sauropods, marine reptiles and pterosaurs were the protagonists of the Cretaceous Period, as well as feathered birds and species with abundant fur. In parallel, pollinating insects propelled the evolution of hundreds of species of flowers and plants. This phenomenon is known as co-evolution, as documented by the Washington Native Plant Society. To a large extent, it was due to the proliferation of wasps and other winged species with stings, which generated, according to researchers in the United States, "an explosion of prehistoric flowers". Some of them are preserved crystallized in amber. It may interest you: To the rescue of 'Fiona', the only fossil of a pregnant ichthyosaur that exists on the planet Why did the dinosaurs become extinct? The asteroid crashing into Earth during the Cretaceous Period wasn't the only reason the dinosaurs went extinct. Much of the mass extinction that occurred in prehistory was due to a series of drastic and vertiginous ecological changes, to which the species were unable to overcome or adapt. To a large extent, climate change was propelled by the very high concentrations of CO2 that accumulated in the atmosphere. As documented by the Institute of Geology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), these altered levels "caused various transformations in the Earth's biosphere and climate." Contrary to what is commonly thought, not only the dinosaurs received the consequences of the climate crisis in Prehistory. On the contrary, the cosmic dust of the asteroid blocked the Sun's rays, so that even prehistoric plants succumbed to the hostilities of the environment. In addition, according to Dr. Fernando NΓΊΓ±ez-Useche, from the UNAM Institute of Geology, the CO2 concentrations are also due to the growing volcanic activity that the planet faced. The change began with the breakup of the supercontinent Pangea. However, "the separation of the resulting continental blocks occurred at an accelerated rate during the Cretaceous", explains the specialist, "which intensified the production of oceanic crust on the seabed and increased submarine volcanic activity". Are we facing a similar mass extinction today? In this regard, the UNAM-DGDC Science correspondent, MarΓa Luisa SantillΓ‘n, explains that the contemporary climate crisis is very similar to the changes that occurred back then. Β«THE CHANGES THAT OCCURRED DURING THE CRETACEOUS PERIOD ARE THEREFORE AN ANALOG OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE WE ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING; IN FACT, IT IS CALCULATED THAT IF CO2 EMISSIONS CONTINUE WITHOUT ANY CONTROL AT THE CURRENT RATE, BY THE YEAR 2100 THE CONCENTRATIONS COULD REACH VERY SIMILAR LEVELS”, POINTS OUT THE SPECIALIST. https://www.ngenespanol.com/animales/periodo-cretacico-historia-caracteristicas/
  15. Peugeot has just launched the new generation of 2008. This crossover takes the platform of the new DS3 Crossback and the upcoming Peugeot 208, which not only gives it greater rigidity and space (4.3 meters long, 434 liters of trunk), but also which also prepares it to receive electrified thrusters. At the moment, only three versions are available in Chile, but the idea is that other models in the range will soon be enabled. The new 2008 has a 130 Hp 1.2 Turbo engine with a 6MT gearbox and an alternative 1.5 BlueHDi with an 8AT gearbox, this one with two power levels. The equipment will vary depending on the version, but at least in the current versions there is mixed upholstery, climate control, a complete electrical kit, heated mirrors, a multifunction leather steering wheel, a digital instrument panel, a multimedia system with connectivity, six airbags, ESP, ISOFIX, a light and rain, reversing camera, among others, all clear with high quality and very modern design. https://www.autocosmos.cl/autos/suv-diesel
  16. ichelle Nichols, the actor who became a Star Trek legend and broke ground for Black women on screen with her portrayal of Lt. Nyota Uhura, has died. She was 89. She had been treated for dementia in her 80s, and in an Instagram post on Sunday, her son Kyle Johnson wrote that she died of natural causes. "Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration," Johnson wrote. "Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all." A beloved icon of the science-fiction franchise, Nichols’ casting as a prominent character in a position of authority was unprecedented and radical for a TV show that first aired in 1966. Her character’s kiss with William Shatner’s Captain James Kirk also broke ground for being one of the first interracial kisses ever aired on television. After the original series ended, Nichols worked with NASA to recruit women and people of color as astronauts and continued to act, appearing onstage and in films like Snow Dogs and the TV series The Young and the Restless. Still, throughout her life, she remained devoted to Star Trek and was a fixture at fan conventions well into her 80s. β€œEvery time I sat down at my console on the bridge of the Enterprise, I felt that I was in the twenty-third century, that I was Uhura. The promise of that imaginary universe was real to me,” Nichols wrote in her 1994 autobiography, Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories. β€œI am still very proud of Uhura: proud of who she was (or will be) and what she represented, not only in her time but in ours, and in those of people who will discover Star Trek decades from now.” Born Grace Nichols in 1932 in the Chicago suburb of Robbins, Illinois, Nichols knew at a young age that she wanted to be onstage. β€œEven before I could walk, I could sing,” she wrote in Beyond Uhura. She started taking ballet classes at age 7. As a teenager, she danced at the College Inn, a famous venue in downtown Chicago, where she caught the eye of Duke Ellington. She later toured with the jazz legend. Her first break in Hollywood came through a small part as a dancer in the 1959 musical Porgy and Bess starring Sidney Poitier. Five years later, she made her television debut playing the fiancΓ© of a Black Marine in an episode of The Lieutenant, the first show produced by Gene Roddenberry, who went on to create Star Trek. According to her autobiography, when Nichols first auditioned for Star Trek, her character had not yet been created, so she read for the part of Spock. It was only after she signed on to the show that Nichols and Roddenberry conceived Uhura. Her name was derived from Uhuru, the Swahili word for freedom and the title of the book Nichols was reading when she auditioned. β€œI said well why don’t you do an alliteration of it and soften the end with an β€˜a’ and it will be Uhura,” Nichols recalled in an interview years later. β€œ[Roddenberry] said, β€˜That’s it. That’s your name.’” Initially frustrated with her lines getting cut and racism she faced on the studio lot, she famously almost quit the series after one season to pursue theater jobs. But she decided to stick with it after a chance encounter with Martin Luther King Jr., who convinced Nichols of the significance of her role to the Black community. β€œHe said, β€˜For the first time on television we will be seen as we should be seen every day, as intelligent, quality, beautiful people,’” she recalled. β€œAnd he said, β€˜β€¦ Gene Roddenberry has opened a door for the world to see us. If you leave, that door can be closed.’ β€œAnd at that moment the world tilted for me,” Nichols said. Still, she had to continue fighting for lines and for her character’s integrity. In her autobiography, she recalled one new director who insisted that Uhura β€œdo something cutesy” that she β€œsimply would not do.” She held her ground and β€” after Roddenberry backed her up β€” the director relented. β€œThis was not a β€˜female role,’” she recalled, using her hands to make air quotes, in Woman in Motion, a 2021 documentary about her life and work with NASA. β€œAnd I refused to treat it that way.” Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, the son of Gene Roddenberry and an executive producer of several franchise series, reacted to her death on Sunday. Though the original series only aired for three seasons, Lt. Uhura’s impact was far-reaching. Nichols’ portrayal inspired other actors, like Whoopi Goldberg, who was in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and real-life space explorers, like Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space. β€œIt wasn’t until Lt. Uhura did I realize that I was in the future,” Goldberg said later. In the late 1970s, as NASA struggled to attract women and people of color to apply to its Space Shuttle program, the agency hired her to lead a campaign to recruit the first women and people of color to travel to space. She was awarded the agency’s public service award in 1984. Nichols and her costars eventually returned to the Enterprise to reprise their roles in six Star Trek films. She also returned to one of her first loves: the musical stage. In a 1990 one-woman show called Reflections, Nichols paid tribute to more than a dozen iconic performers, including Josephine Baker and Ma Rainey. β€œAlthough people know me best as Uhura, I’ve always considered acting the β€˜other’ thing I do,” she wrote in Beyond Uhura. β€œWhile months, sometimes years, passed without my setting foot before a camera, music filled every day of my life.” She often spoke of not ever wanting to retire. But after a stroke and a dementia diagnosis, she stepped away from public life in 2021. In 2018, due to fears that she was susceptible to exploitation, her son petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court to place her in a conservatorship and later moved her to New Mexico, where he lives. The legal arrangement drew scrutiny from some of Nichols’ friends and the Britney Spears fans who rallied in the #FreeBritney movement against potential conservatorship abuse. Nichols had been one of four of the original Star Trek cast who were still alive. Shatner, George Takei, and Walter Koenig are now the only surviving members of the group. In tweets, Takei described Nichols as trailblazing and incomparable, adding that he'd have more to say about her legacy. "For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend," he wrote. "We lived long and prospered together." The diversity of that cast made them stand out on ’60s TV, and it continued to be a hallmark of Star Trek through spinoff series and films following the crews of other starships. On one current series, Star Trek: Discovery, a Black woman named Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, is not just a member of the bridge crew like Nichols, but the captain. β€œEveryone has her own idea about why Star Trek has endured,” Nichols wrote in her autobiography. β€œI firmly believe in the power of vision, and Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek raised the prospect that space offered humankind the opportunity to start anew. … He believed, as do I and many others, that this was not simply one possible version of the future, but the only viable one.” https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/in-addition-to-acting-in-star-trek-the-original-series-and-six-franchise-films-nichols-was-a-fixture-at-trekkie-events-and-worked-with-nasa-on-astronaut-recruitment/ar-AA109ZTl?li=BBnb7Kz
