  1. There’s an old adage in racing that you need a small fortune to make it, and unfortunately that’s still true. As such, Ferrari of Houston recently put a 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR race car up for sale at the price of $180,000. Sure, that’s quite a lot of dough, but what exactly is this car and why is it so expensive? To the uninitiated, the TCR series features race-prepped production hot hatchbacks, and travels to some of the best race tracks in the world. As the cars are very close in terms of performance, the racing is always very competitive and entertaining. For sale at Ferrari of The Woodlands, the vehicle was initially prepared by the Risi Competizione racing team. With only 50 miles on the clock, this car has never raced, but is eligible to participate in IMSA Michelin Pilot Series, SRO TC America, SCCA, NASA, and the Canadian Touring Car Championship. Under the hood lies a 1,742cc turbocharged 4-cylinder engine putting out 350 horsepower (260.9 kilowatts). Shifting is accomplished with a SADEV six-speed sequential gearbox that can change gear in the blink of an eye – yes, this is the same company that makes the gearbox used in the Hoonicorn. Although some racing series don’t allow it, the Giulietta TCR also comes with an ABS braking system. Surprisingly, the race car inventory at Ferrari of Houston doesn’t end with just the Alfa; also on offer is a 2017 Ferrari 488 Challenge. Semantics aside, it’s clear that this front-wheel-drive competitor is eager to please and waiting to become the track day toy of your dreams.
  2. Indonesian authorities say they have found the location where they believe a Boeing 737 passenger plane crashed into the sea shortly after take-off from the country's capital Jakarta on Saturday. The Sriwijaya Air jet was carrying 62 people when it disappeared from radar four minutes into its journey to Pontianak in West Kalimantan province. On Sunday, signals thought to be from the jet's flight recorder were traced. More than 10 ships have now been deployed to the site with navy divers. "We have detected signals in two points, this could be the black box," the chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Bagus Puruhito, said. Investigators are also analysing items they believe to be wreckage from the aircraft, including a wheel and what they say could be part of the plane's fuselage. A spokesman for the Jakarta police, Yusri Yunus, said two bags had been received from the search and rescue agency. "The first bag contained passengers' properties, another bag contained body parts," he told reporters, adding: "We are still identifying these findings." Search and rescue efforts were suspended overnight but resumed early on Sunday. Four planes have also been deployed to help with the search. The missing aircraft is not a 737 Max, the Boeing model that was grounded from March 2019 until last December following two deadly crashes. What happened to the aircraft? The Sriwijaya Air passenger plane departed Jakarta airport at 14:36 local time (07:36 GMT) on Saturday. Minutes later, at 14:40, the last contact with the plane was recorded, with the call sign SJY182, according to the transport ministry. The usual flight time to Pontianak, in the west of the island of Borneo, is 90 minutes. The aircraft did not send a distress signal, according to the head of national search and rescue agency Air Marshal Bagus Puruhito. It is thought to have dropped more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in less than a minute, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.com. Witnesses said they had seen and heard at least one explosion. Fisherman Solihin, who goes by one name, told the BBC Indonesian service he had witnessed a crash and his captain decided to return to land. "The plane fell like lightning into the sea and exploded in the water," he said. "It was pretty close to us, the shards of a kind of plywood almost hit my ship." A timeline of global air disasters Plane crash fatalities fell more than 50% in 2019 Mechanical v human: Why do planes crash? A number of residents of an island near where the plane disappeared told the BBC they had found objects they thought were from the plane. Who was on board the flight? There were thought to be 50 passengers - including seven children and three babies - and 12 crew on board, though the plane has a capacity of 130. Everyone on board was Indonesian, officials say. Relatives of the passengers have been waiting anxiously at the airport in Pontianak, as well as at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. "I have four family members on the flight - my wife and my three children," Yaman Zai told reporters through tears. "[My wife] sent me a picture of the baby today... How could my heart not be torn into pieces?" What do we know about the plane? According to registration details, the plane was a 26-year-old Boeing 737-500. It was in good condition, Sriwijaya Air chief executive Jefferson Irwin Jauwena told reporters. Take-off had been delayed for 30 minutes due to heavy rain, he said. Sriwijaya Air, founded in 2003, is a local budget airline which flies to Indonesian and other South-East Asian destinations. The plane went missing about 20km (12 miles) north of the capital Jakarta, not far from where another flight crashed in October 2018. A total of 189 died when an Indonesian Lion Air flight plunged into the sea about 12 minutes after take-off from the city. That disaster was blamed on a series of failures in the plane's design, but also faults by the airline and the pilots. It was one of two crashes that led regulators to pull the Boeing 737 Max from service. The model resumed passenger flights in December after a systems overhaul. The BBC's Jerome Wirawan in Jakarta says the latest events will bring up difficult questions and emotions in Indonesia, whose airline industry has faced intense scrutiny since the Lion Air crash.
  3. Windows 10 has received a fix for a troublesome bug that reboots the system, with the user having no say in the matter, and being forced to quickly save all their work within a minute. Affected users find themselves being faced with a dialog box that informs them: “Your PC will automatically restart in one minute. Windows ran into a problem and needs to restart. You should close this message now and save your work.” How to speed up Windows 10 We solve 100 common Windows 10 problems How to uninstall a Windows 10 update As you can imagine, this could be pretty inconvenient if you’re in the middle of something, not to mention a rather frantic rush to save everything if you were working on multiple apps at the time. However, this issue only hit a limited set of Windows 10 users, with the bug being introduced by recent updates for the OS, and Microsoft confirming in November 2020 that there were issues with the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) on some PCs. The problem occurs for those who have renamed local accounts (like ‘administrator’ or ‘guest’) when they’re “interacting with any dialog window that lists users, for example accessing the sign-in options settings app page or the users folder in the Local user and groups MMC snap-in”. This led to Microsoft putting an upgrade block in place to stop systems that could be affected from updating to the latest October 2020 Update. Interestingly, this issue has cropped up in the past, as evidenced by a post on Reddit were the solution to the problem was seemingly wrapped up in motherboard settings. Fix deployed At any rate, a fix for the current issue has now been deployed and the block (or safeguard hold as Microsoft calls it) has been lifted. Windows Latest highlighted the resolution of this problem in a Microsoft support document, which read: “As of January 7, 2020, this issue is now resolved and the safeguard hold has been removed when devices are using the latest feature update bundles and refreshed media.” “Please note, if there are no other safeguards that affect your device, it can take up to 48 hours before you will be able to the update to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2.” In other recent Windows 10 bug news, a fresh gremlin witnessed antivirus software interfering with newly created files and the Chrome browser (which meant that, for example, bookmarks weren’t being saved).
  4. Killzone developer Guerrilla Games had a smash hit with 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn, and the sequel Horizon: Forbidden West is set to release later this year. However, it appears the Killzone franchise may have been a casualty of this success. The official Killzone website is no longer available, instead directing players to visit the main PlayStation site in its place. As spotted by VGC, the official Killzone site now only shows a notice page letting visitors know it has been "retired" and that it will soon forward them to PlayStation.com instead. You can no longer create or manage clans in the PS4 launch game Killzone: Shadow Fall, either, though you can still play online multiplayer in the game as normal. "Thank you to Killzone.com's many fans and visitors throughout the years for their enthusiasm and support," Guerrilla Games said on the site. The notice does not say the Killzone franchise has ended, though we've heard little on the franchise since Shadow Fall released in 2013. That game ended on a cliffhanger with the ISA and Helghast armies seeing renewed conflict after a period of Cold-War-like silence. A Vita game developed by the defunct Guerrilla Cambridge, Killzone Mercenary, was also well-received for its bite-sized campaign missions and engaging online multiplayer. It was one of the only successful first-person shooters on the Vita, with Resistance: Burning Skies receiving a much more negative reception. Though it would certainly make sense for Guerrilla to focus all its attention on Horizon going forward, it does leave the PS5 without a big exclusive first-person shooter. The Resistance series has also been on ice since the early days of the Vita, with Insomniac Games now focused on Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank. However, it's now a first-party Sony studio, so anything is possible.

  7. Early on Tuesday, the burglars broke into the cellar at the Domaine de Rymska, a hotel in the Burgundy region known for its wine, and stole bottles estimated to be worth the equivalent of nearly $430,000, Decanter reported, citing Le Journal de Saône-et-Loire, a local newspaper. The thieves loaded the stolen wine into a van and were ready to escape, but they inadvertently set off a fire alarm during the break-in, according to the reports. That woke up the hotel’s owner, who called police. ILLEGAL WINERY FOUND IN ALABAMA SEWAGE PLANT Officers soon found the thieves’ van driving southbound toward the city of Lyon. In an effort to slow down the pursuing officers, the thieves threw some of the stolen bottles at them, according to the reports. None of the thrown bottles hit the police, who chased the crooks until the van crashed into a toll barrier. The thieves ran away after the crash, leaving behind the stolen wine. Prosecutors are working to identify three suspects in the case. The hotel's restaurant has an extensive wine list with many offerings priced at hundreds of euros and some in the thousands. The most expensive is priced at the equivalent of nearly $20,000.

  8. There have been a lot of ultimate Ford Mustang models over the years. Remember the old SVT Cobra from 2004, with its 390-horsepower, supercharged V8? Or the three different Cobra R models? Or we could go even further back into the Mustang's storied history, when the Boss 302 and GT350 ruled. But while those are great Mustangs, it's been the GT500 that has held the title of Greatest Mustang whenever it was on sale. The 2020 Shelby GT500, then, takes a crown that was always its birthright. But its reign will not be more of the same. This new car has as little in common with the character of past GT500s as the current Mustang does with one from 1965. It's a dramatic cultural shift for Ford's flagship pony car, and after a week behind the wheel, we started to forget this is even a member of that family. That's one of the many, many reasons to consider the latest greatest Mustang. For more on how Motor1.com rates cars, click here. This thing looks absolutely menacing – it's like Super Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II but, you know, a car. Awash in flares and vents and scoops – all done up in Grabber Lime with gloss black accents, in the case of our tester – the 2020 Shelby GT500 bears only a passing resemblance to lesser Mustangs. The Shelby has the profile, headlights, taillights, and that's about it. It's an extreme makeover that produces a far more muscular look for an iconic muscle car. Are there things to dislike? Far and away, this feels like the largest Mustang in a long time, even if it's only half an inch wider or longer than a Mustang GT. There's a lot of visual mass, thanks to the way the design seemingly hugs the ground. We're lukewarm on the $18,500 Carbon Fiber Track pack's particular accents, too. The huge rear wing and carbon-fiber wheels make all the sense if you're attending routine track days, but anyone that's daily driving their GT500 will want the cheaper wheels and a wing that can't quite double as a buffet table. But while the GT500's designers went ham on its exterior, there are precious few touches in the cabin. Like the GT350, a cobra badge graces the steering wheel's airbag cover. Drivers operate the dual-clutch transmission via Ford’s typical rotary dial, although designers wisely swapped out the small, flimsy paddle shifters of other two-pedal Mustangs for a big, gorgeous set hewn from real metal, for use while the gearbox is in manual mode. There’s also an Alcantara wrap for the steering wheel and a carbon-fiber finish on the dash. The CF Track pack swaps the standard chairs for a beautiful set of Recaros (which are also available as a standalone option for $1,595), finished in a contrasting Ebony and Smoke (grayish-white) color scheme, and ditches the rear seats altogether. But aside from those modifications, this looks like any other Mustang's cabin, which is to say it's fine and functional, but hardly a place that feels all that special or befitting of a $90,000 track special. You'll notice if you look at the gallery that our test model featured a roll cage and a four-point harness. This isn't a factory option, but Ford had been using this car at customer track events as a demonstration of what the stock body could accommodate and we didn’t mind the racy treatment during our loan. Those Recaros are a must-have item if track exploits are in the cards – for anyone else, though, the ultra-supportive chairs and their firm padding border on restrictive. Larger folks should pass on them full stop, unless they enjoy having their pelvis compacted over every bump. But skipping the Track pack means missing out on the rear-seat delete, and cars get cooler the fewer seats they have. We wish Ford had come up with some kind of innovation for cargo management in this area – it'd be a nice alternative to the trunk. The GT500 is aimed at the track, but the ride quality and noise, vibration, and harshness controls are impressive for the class. At highway speeds, there's little unpleasantness from under the hood, while tight seals around the windows keep noise at bay. The fat tires contribute most of the cabin sounds, transmitting whatever's happening with the road surface right to the driver's ears (an available 12-speaker B&O Play audio system helps hide the worst manners). Unlike the Shelby GT350, the GT500 adopts the same 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as the broader Mustang family. There are no special trimmings, features, or gauge packs in the GT500 (which feels like a missed opportunity in our eyes), but the display remains one of our favorite Mustang features. The graphics are clear and attractive, and while the way the system displays information isn't as customizable as what you'll find in some German products, there are still three different gauge modes available. The digital cluster does have some serious functional value, too. Three different modes for shift lights – one that changes the color of the tachometer, another that illuminates the entire cluster, and (our personal favorite) a Formula 1–style progression of green, yellow, and red bars – and the ability to adjust the desired shift point is a brilliant addition for a car like the GT500. Contrasting with the fancy display is the Sync 3 infotainment system and its 8.0-inch touchscreen, which remains a functional and easy to use setup. Its age, though, is showing in the limited feature set, relatively poor resolution, and relaxed response time – then again, our experience with Ford's excellent Sync 4 suite may be coloring our impressions here. This system, though, is plenty serviceable until a redesigned, Sync 4–enabled Mustang arrives. Unfortunately, even with a $70,000-plus starting price Ford still cordons off navigation as part of a $3,000 Technology pack. The GT500 performs in a manner that exceeds simple qualifications such as "quick" or "fast." The hand-built engine, a brilliant 5.2-liter V8 equipped with a fat 2.7-liter supercharger, is the most powerful production engine Ford has ever built – output sits at 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. Now, yes, you can get more powerful engines elsewhere. The 797-hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is more potent, for example, as is the 775-hp Jack Roush Edition Mustang we tested earlier in the week. But the GT500 is beyond either of them, owing to how effortlessly it deploys that power. There is no drama. The backend doesn't wiggle. The car simply leans back on its haunches, grips the road, and goes. Few rear-drive cars feel like this while retaining a sub-$100,000 asking price. The sprint to 60 takes a manufacturer-estimated 3.3 seconds and we have little reason to doubt that. But where the 5.2-liter V8 does a lot of work, the GT500's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission deserves as much praise (in fact, we'd entertain giving it the bulk). Set to manual and with the Shelby's Track drive mode engaged, the shift speed is immediate up or down – as soon as you so much think of touching the paddle shifter, the DCT is ready to serve up a gear. It's addicting and a huge part of why the Shelby feels so relentless under heavy throttle. The Mustang made a big leap in 2015 when it ditched a solid-rear axle in favor of an independent rear suspension, but the GT500 represents a similarly sizable leap over the base Mustang, thanks to its sport-tuned MagneRide magnetorheological dampers and CF Track pack’s Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. This is an incredibly sharp car, able to change direction quickly and carry serious speed through corners. Although we were only able to test it on public roads, the Shelby still impressed with its eagerness. The sole letdown came from the steering wheel, which remains the Mustang's weak point for feed
  9. US President Donald Trump has said he will not attend the inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden, on 20 January. "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th," the president tweeted. Mr Trump is facing calls for his removal from office after five people died when a mob of his supporters invaded Congress. The latest death is that of US Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The FBI and Washington police will jointly investigate his death, although they have not yet said whether it will be treated as murder. Wednesday's violence came hours after Mr Trump encouraged his supporters to fight against the election results as Congress was certifying Mr Biden's victory in the November vote. Under pressure, Mr Trump finally released a recorded statement late on Thursday condemning the storming of the US Capitol as a "heinous attack". How unusual is Trump's snub of the inauguration? It is highly unusual but not unprecedented: the last president to skip the inauguration of his successor was Andrew Johnson, in 1869. Mr Trump has now admitted defeat in the 3 November election and has promised a peaceful transfer of power. However, he has repeated baseless claims of widespread voter fraud. Top congressional Democrats have urged Vice-President Mike Pence to begin a process of declaring Mr Trump unfit for office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Mr Trump should be removed for "his incitement of insurrection". "The President's dangerous and seditious acts necessitate his immediate removal from office," they said in a joint statement. The duo called for Mr Trump to be ousted using the 25th Amendment, which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness. There is no sign that Mr Pence is prepared to do this. Americans 'shocked' and 'disgusted' by riots A visual guide to the Congress riots The US Air Force veteran who lost her life in riots If he does not, Mrs Pelosi and Mr Schumer say they will start impeachment proceedings. However, time is tight, with just 12 days remaining in Mr Trump's presidential term. On Friday, Mrs Pelosi said she had spoken to the top US military official, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to prevent Mr Trump from accessing US nuclear codes. Separately, one of Mrs Pelosi's staff members revealed that a laptop was stolen from her office during the mob invasion of Congress. Trump's announcement that he will not attend Joe Biden's inauguration, breaking with a long American tradition, should not come as a huge surprise. He only recently, and reluctantly, acknowledged his presidential defeat, after months of unfounded allegations that a landslide electoral victory had been stolen from him. The terse message, posted on Twitter, will undercut the president's call for "healing and reconciliation" made in the White House video he released last night. It suggests Trump, far from being at peace with his defeat, still harbours the kind of anger and resentment he has displayed in recent days. He will not graciously welcome the Bidens to Washington as part of his promised "smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power". He may not even be anywhere near Washington when they arrive. Instead, scripted Trump and Twitter Trump reveal two very different attitudes. Already, Trump has tweeted about the "giant voice" his supporters will continue to have. The question is whether Trump is writing a coda to his presidency or just clearing his throat.
  10. NZXT, maker of PC accessories and cases, has revised its Mini-ITX case, and it's now available for purchase. In November, we broke the news that the H1 was being recalled for safety concerns. This was due to a number of reports of motherboards being shorted out and potentially starting a fire, due to two screws that attach the PCIe riser assembly to the chassis. This issue has reportedly been corrected in a new revision of the case. NZXT ensures that this new revision will not suffer from the same issue as before. "The H1 has been updated to address the safety issue and is once again available for sale. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we resolved this matter," it said in a blog post. Those who already own the H1 case can request a free repair kit by going to NZXT's H1 recall website. The repair process is straightforward, and there's also a video that explains the steps to apply this repair kit. These repair kits started shipping out as of December 28. The H1 case is up for sale again, but now in its revised version, over on NZXT's website. However, we've yet to see go back up on Amazon or Best Buy, two online retailers who sold the original H1 case. NZXT's H1 comes in both matte white and matte black and retails for $350. If you're wondering why this case is so expensive, it is equipped with a 650w SFX PSU and 140mm AIO liquid cooling. On a personal note, I'm glad to see that this case is going back on sale, as I've wanted one for quite some time. Our NZXT H1 review praised the chassis' small build, premium cooling and easy use, landing it on our Best PC Cases page. I originally planned to pull the trigger on an H1 and rebuild my PC over the 2020 holiday season, but the recall made that impossible.
  11. With 2021 looking like it’s going to include a lot more video calls, for the foreseeable future at least, Microsoft Teams users will be pleased to hear about an exciting new feature that will be launching in March: ‘Dynamic view.’ The addition will automatically improve the visibility of shared content during a meeting or event. “Dynamic view automatically optimizes shared content and video participants in Teams meetings,” the Microsoft 365 roadmap explains. “New controls let you personalize the view to suit your preferences and needs, such as the ability to show shared content and specific participants side-by-side.” With Dynamic view, Microsoft Teams gives users more control over shared content, optimizing the meeting screen to give the best view of slides and other presentation materials. At the moment, sharing content means participants have to make do with a small frame containing the presenter or participant, which is less than ideal for real-time collaboration. And here's our list of the best video conferencing solutions on the market We've assembled a list of the best online collaboration tools around And these are the best business webcams Avoiding Teams fatigue The addition of the Dynamic view feature is just the latest upgrade to come to Microsoft Teams. Microsoft seems intent on regularly iterating its collaboration tool, not only to fix issues and enhance exiting features, but also to provide new functionality to keep users engaged. There have been reports of some individuals finding the sheer number of video calls tedious since the outbreak of COVID-19. Another noteworthy feature that came to Microsoft Teams last year was Together Mode. Unveiled in July, the feature uses artificial intelligence to project a user’s avatar onto a virtual meeting room, like an auditorium for example. Although it does not offer much practical benefit, Together Mode was designed to specifically tackle video fatigue. Microsoft has also confirmed a couple of other new features that are in development for Teams. These include a low-data mode for users with bandwidth restrictions or poor internet connectivity and an enhanced search experience. We've also rounded up all the gear you'll need to work from home Via Windows Latest
  12. League of Legends' opening day stream for the 2021 season brought a ton of announcements for the game's future. One of these announcements was an update on the upcoming League of Legends: Wild Rift, which is a new mobile and console version of the po[CENSORED]r MOBA. Additionally, players in North America will be able to try it out in March. As stated in the stream, Wild Rift will feature its own version of the PC version's ARAM mode (where players are randomly assigned a champion in a one lane brawl), and will also be aiming to release an average of two champions a month throughout 2021. The first season of Wild Rift will start this year and will coincide with many of the PC version of League's events, including the Lunar Beasts New Year's event. Other regions of the world have gotten to check out Wild Rift through various betas, but it has yet to arrive in North America. That will change in March when a North American open beta begins. Once the beta has started, players should be able to access the game from a variety of Android and iOS mobile devices, though it's unclear if console versions will be available at this time as well. There were plenty of other updates in this stream as well, including the announcement of Viego, the Ruined King coming to the game as a playable champion. Two other champions, a mage and a marksman, were also teased, though players will have to wait on a future roadmap for more details on them. Doctor Mundo's update is also still in the works, and should be live sometime this spring. The designers have heard player's feedback that the original reimagining of Mundo's hair was too well-kempt, so his 'do has gone back to the drawing board. Players hungry for more League news in 2021 should keep their eyes peeled for future streams and roadmaps.
  13. A "Swiss Made" car is not exactly a common thing, given that someone could count Swiss manufacturers in the history of automobiles on their fingers and toes. But now there is a person who wants to revive the idea of the Swiss car, and it is Stefano Picasso, founder of Picasso Automotive. Here are the first images of his new Picasso PS-01. What the company refers to called "the craziest carbon fiber car ever" seems to have what it takes to join the shortlist of modern, artisanal supercars. The photos show off the prototypes that are in development in Lugano, Switzerland. All Carbon Fiber The body has a 10.5-feet (3.2-meter) long carbon fiber panel that is allegedly the longest ever on a car using the lightweight material. In addition, the rear subframe is entirely carbon, and the piece uses engineering inspiration from LMP2 endurance cars. The use of composites keeps the weight down to 1,984 pounds (900 kilograms). The teaser images of the Picasso PS-01 show a compact and sinuous coupe with a mid-mounted engine. The first example of the supercar will face its first track tests shortly and will be completed by spring 2021. Italian Heart The list of technical partners involved in the development of the Picasso PS-01 is very long. The company isn't revealing the engine yet, but it's apparently a twin-turbo V6 from "of the most famous Italian cars" making around 600 horsepower. Sadev contributes the gearbox, and Sabelt provides the seats. Carbo Brake issues the stoppers, and the suspension comes from Öhlins. To give life to the next Picasso PS-01, the company has an international investor, and there are already a couple of orders. The business has a strategy that it defines as "Swiss precision, Italian imagination and world technology." Launching a new automaker is difficult, but Picasso is trying to establish itself as a small and tenacious company that can build limited-run sports cars and supercars with a focus on an impressive power-to-weight ratio in the segment.
  14. More than 60 people have been arrested and investigations are under way after the violent invasion of the US Congress in Washington DC on Wednesday. Four people died when a mob loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, damaging property and forcing lawmakers to take refuge. Top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has now called for Mr Trump to be removed from office immediately. Police have defended their actions after they were called into question. The head of the US Capitol Police (USCP) said his officers had faced "criminal riotous behaviour" and he described their actions as "heroic". Follow our live updates here Questions mount over security failure Johnson condemns Trump over US Capitol siege How have lawmakers responded? A growing number have called for Mr Trump to be removed as president. "This president should not hold office one day longer," said Mr Schumer, who will lead the new Democratic majority in the Senate when it begins its next session. What does a deadly day mean for Trump's legacy? 'They tried to break in - then I heard a shot' Who broke into the building? He threatened to start impeachment proceedings if Mr Trump's cabinet did not remove him from office, using the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness. It would require Vice-President Mike Pence and at least eight cabinet members to break with Mr Trump and invoke the amendment - something they have so far seemed unlikely to do. A visual guide to the storming of Congress Congressman Adam Kinzinger from Illinois has become one of the first Republicans to call for use of the 25th Amendment, saying: "Fires stoked by the president finally leapt out of the pan." Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have said that Mr Trump's actions meet the amendment's requirements. Separately, both the House and the Senate have adjourned until after Mr Trump's successor, President-elect Joe Biden, is inaugurated on 20 January. Both houses would have to be recalled in order to start impeachment proceedings. In pictures: Pro-Trump protesters storm Capitol Facebook blocks Trump 'until transition complete' Several Trump administration officials have resigned, including special envoy Mick Mulvaney, senior national security official Matt Pottinger, and Stephanie Grisham, press secretary to First Lady Melania Trump. Several others are reported to be on the verge of quitting. The president is also facing new restrictions on his use of social media. Facebook, which owns Instagram, has suspended him from both platforms at least until he leaves office and possibly indefinitely. Twitter suspended his account for 12 hours. What was the role of the police? Police have been heavily criticised for their response to the violence. Images captured inside the Capitol building showed rioters strolling through some of the corridors unimpeded. One man occupied the office of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, putting his feet up on her desk, while another was photographed walking out carrying a lectern. Some Democrats drew a comparison with the security operation around the Black Lives Matter protests in Washington DC during the summer, when heavily armed police took up station on the Lincoln Memorial to keep demonstrators away. Washington police say 68 people have so far been arrested, only one of them from the DC area. One USCP officer has been placed on leave after a woman was shot dead on the floor of the House of Representatives. The woman, who has been named as Ashli Babbitt, 35, was part of a group that forced its way into the chamber while it was still in session. The FBI is now seeking to identify those involved in the rampage. What have Biden and Trump said? Mr Biden denounced what he called an "insurrection" and riotous activity which "borders on sedition". Mr Trump, while he told the mob in a Twitter video to "go home", also continued to make false claims of electoral fraud and said he understood the "pain" of his supporters.
  15. Thermaltake has introduced the new ToughAir series of CPU air coolers for both Intel and AMD platforms. The ToughAir 110 features a horizontal form factor, while the ToughAir 310 and ToughAir 510 adhere to a more traditional vertical tower design. Regardless of the presentation, Thermaltake implements a four copper heat pipe arrangement with the ToughAir CPU coolers. Each heat pipe, which is 6mm in diameter, makes direct contact with the processor and transfers the heat towards the aluminum heatsink, which flaunts an optimized layout for the best heat dissipation. Thermaltake rates the ToughAir 110 (137.7 x 123.6 x 114.1mm) with a cooling capacity up to 140W. The ToughAir 310 (123.6 x 71.7 x 159.5mm), on the other hand, is good for up to 170W, while the ToughAir 510 (123.6 x 98.8 x 159.5mm) that relies on an additional fan can cool up to 180W. The ToughAir CPU coolers employ the ToughFan 12 cooling fan. The fan, which measures 120 x 120 x 25mm, comes equipped with nine liquid crystal polymer (LCP) fan blades and Thermaltake's second-gen hydraulic bearing. The ToughFan spins between 500 RPM and 2,000 RPM. You can control its speed thanks to the standard 4-pin fan connector. At its highest velocity, the ToughFan 12 delivers an airflow and air pressure up to 58.35 CFM and 2.41 mmH2O, respectively. According to Thermaltake, the fan has a maximum acoustical noise level of 23.6 dBA and a lifetime of up to 40,000 hours (around four and a half years). 21. Police in South Africa are investigating a possible international gold smuggling ring after seizing 162 pounds of gold bars worth about $4.1 million at a Johannesburg airport. The South African Police Services circulated photos of the precious metals on Monday, revealing that three suspects from Madagascar were arrested at O.R. Tambo International Airport after the bars were discovered in their carry-on luggage. Authorities thought something looked suspicious when the bags went through a security check, the Associated Press reports. CUSTOMS AGENTS SEIZE MYSTERY 'BUSHMEAT' AT NJ AIRPORT "Upon questioning of the suspects and further inspection of their hand luggage, officials discovered the gold bars and some foreign currency," said police spokeswoman Col. Athlenda Mathe. From three, the suspects handed over certification papers for the gold. Now, South African authorities will work with the international Interpol and the nations involved to verify the origin and destination of the gold bars, Mathe said. The police spokeswoman added there’s a "possibility" the three suspects may be hit with money laundering and fraud charges in the future. The suspects, who were traveling from Madagascar to Dubai via South Africa and Ethiopia, made their first court appearance Monday. The trio is due back in court on Jan. 12 for a formal bail application.
  22. Another day, another set of BMW 2 Series Active Tourer spy photos. It almost seems that the Bavarian manufacturer is in a hurry to put the finishing touches on the next-generation minivan as our spy photographers literally can’t stop catching prototypes of the 2 AT out testing. Today, we have yet another batch of shots taken on public roads in Germany. The test car retains significant amounts of disguise but is most likely finally wearing all the production bits and pieces. As you can see, the front fascia now features the final serial headlights with a dual projector lens setup and stylish LED daytime running lights. It’s a similar story at the back where there’s a pair of LED taillights covered with what appears to be bubble wrap of some sort. Back in 2014 when the outgoing 2 Series Active Tourer debuted, it was introduced as the first front-wheel-drive BMW in history. Its successor will remain faithful to this layout as it will be based on the current 1 Series hatchback. Thanks to an updated architecture though, the new model will be lighter and more efficient. More importantly, it’ll be capable of accommodating electrified powertrains. Speaking of powertrains, we can’t confirm the exact number and identity of the engines that will be offered for the new 2 AT. However, we are 99 percent sure a selection of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged gas and diesel units will be available depending on the market. A plug-in hybrid derivative is also said to be in the cards for a release later during the model’s lifecycle. Seeing how BMW is testing 2 AT prototypes with production parts, it’s probably safe to assume the full debut of the minivan is around the corner. Different sources point to a premiere during the first half of this year and with no show in Geneva on the horizon, we expect the debut to be entirely online.
  23. Hong Kong has arrested dozens of pro-democracy activists and politicians, accusing them of trying to "overthrow" the city's government. The group, arrested under a controversial new security law, were involved in an unofficial "primary" vote to select opposition candidates ahead of postponed 2020 elections. Hong Kong's security secretary has said their actions were "subversive". The arrests formed part of the largest crackdown since the law's introduction. Beijing imposed the legislation on the semi-autonomous territory in June, saying it was necessary to curb months of sometimes violent pro-democracy protests. China's government defended the arrests. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said they were needed to stop "external forces and individuals [colluding] to undermine China's stability and security". But the crackdown on Wednesday appeared to confirm the fears of many who warned about the reach of the law, with Amnesty International saying the arrests are "the starkest demonstration yet of how the national security law has been weaponised to punish anyone who dares to challenge the establishment". What happened on Wednesday? Early in the morning, police began a sweeping crackdown on Hong Kong's opposition figures. 53 people were arrested About 1,000 national security officers were deployed Police searched the home of already detained activist Joshua Wong Police searched the offices of law firm Ho Tse Wai & Partners Three news outlets were asked to hand over information: Apple Daily and Stand News had co-organised election forums for the primaries candidates, while In-Media ran ads around the primaries Among those arrested are thought to be three members of the Civic Party, seven members of the Democratic Party, 21 opposition district councillors, 13 candidates from the primaries, two academics behind the primaries strategy, and one US citizen and human rights lawyer from the raided law firm. China's new law: Why is Hong Kong worried? The background you need on Hong Kong's protests Well-known opposition figures are among the detained including James To, Lam Cheuk Ting, Lester Shum and Benny Tai, one of the initiators of the primaries. The US lawyer is John Clancey, chairman of the Asian Human Rights Commission. Hours after the dawn arrests John Lee, Hong Kong's security secretary, confirmed a group of people had been arrested as part of an operation targeting those suspected of "overthrowing" the city's government. The government will not tolerate "subversive" acts, he said, speaking at the city's Legislative Council. What were the primaries? In July last year, an alliance of opposition parties ran independently organised primaries to see which of their candidates had the best chances in September's election for the Legislative Council, Hong Kong's parliament. More than 600,000 people voted in the primaries. The election was later postponed, with officials citing concerns over the pandemic as the reason for the delay. The opposition groups had hoped that winning more seats would give them enough power to block government proposals and increase pressure for democratic reforms. Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam had warned at the time the primaries could amount to subversion if the candidates intended to obstruct government policies through their election. Several of the opposition figures planning to stand in the LegCo election have since been disqualified from running, including Joshua Wong and Lester Shum. Former journalist Gwyneth Ho, who rose to prominence covering the 2019 protests and was later disqualified from running for LegCo, was also among those arrested on Wednesday. Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmakers resign en masse Can Hong Kong's democracy fight survive the walkout? Most of the opposition lawmakers in the current LegCo resigned in November en masse in protest at four of them being dismissed from parliament. line 'Eliminating the opposition' Danny Vincent, BBC News Hong Kong The new security law has spread what activists often call "white terror" across the city. When authorities introduced the law, they claimed it would target only a small number of activists, but the wide-ranging nature of today's operation has led many to fear that authorities are now trying to eliminate the entire opposition camp. The legislation already has all but silenced the street protest movement and led to a growing number of activists fleeing the territory. Today's arrests represent the largest crackdown on the pro-democracy camp since the law was introduced. If charged under the new national security law, they could face life in prison. line What's been the reaction? The crackdown has stunned people in Hong Kong and will have a chilling effect on free speech, activists say. "Seeing the news today I feel completely shocked. I feel very disappointed. It seems that such major things are happening in Hong Kong and there's nothing we can do about it. I feel very unhappy and it seems that even during the epidemic the government can still do so many things to terrorise people," Mannie Ng, a Hong Kong resident, told Reuters news agency. Wednesday's sweeping arrests have been widely condemned internationally. Antony Blinken, the pick for next US Secretary of State by President-elect Joe Biden, said they were an "assault on those bravely advocating for universal rights". "The Biden-Harris administration will stand with the people of Hong Kong and against Beijing's crackdown on democracy."
  24. Since the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 arrived on the scene in late 2020, there have been murmurings from retro gaming enthusiasts eager to have the power of Raspberry Pi 4 in portable retro gaming rigs. Experimental Pi, well known for its PiBoy DMG, a "homage" to the classic Nintendo Gameboy, seems to be working on two new handheld Compute Module 4 powered handhelds. Right now, the only source of this information is via YouTuber ETA Prime, who has been given "leaked" images from "DarkPi." Take the news with a grain of salt, but let's delve a little deeper. Going for a wide, Gameboy Advance-style design, the PiBoy CM4x features a 3.5-inch 640 x 480 IPS display protected by a tempered glass cover. A plethora of buttons and controls, including digital and dual analog inputs, are on either side of the screen. At the top of the case, four shoulder buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2) are useful when emulating Playstation games. An HDMI output provides a means to bring your games to the big screen, and boot media is a micro SD card, a slot for which is on the side of the case. Internally, not much is really known. The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 is the brains and the brawn of the kit, so all we really know is that Experimental Pi has developed its own carrier board used to connect the Pi to the PiBoy CM4x electronics. Looking at the renders, we can see a central "bulge" where there are two grills, presumably for air intake and output. The Compute Module 4 will most likely be placed there with active cooling to keep the CPU cool. Access to the hardware seems to be via the removal of six screws. The PiBoy SRX is a Raspberry Pi 4-based handheld, which means it will be a little chunkier than the CM4X. Featuring a design that mimics the original Nintendo Gameboy, albeit in a wider form factor, the PiBoy SRX has a range of buttons and dual analog sticks. The shoulder buttons are slightly different; in fact, looking at the renders, they look much more comfortable than the CM4X. PiBoy SRX comes with the same 3.5-inch IPS display with tempered glass protection. Despite the physical differences between the CM4X and the SRX, the only real hardware difference is the choice of board powering the kit. We have noticed something odd in the renders, though – the orientation of the Raspberry Pi 4 in the SRX render shows the Ethernet port to the left and the LEDs to the front of the case. This would mean the GPIO pins, which would be used to power the Raspberry Pi 4 and provide connections for the screen and controls, face the rear of the case. This means that the Raspberry Pi 4 does not directly interface with SRX; rather, there is some form of breakout connection/board present. Or it could be a mistake in the render. The latter seems the most likely option, but until we get the hardware, that remains to be seen. Both of these handhelds have enough power to emulate consoles and computers up to and including the Playstation Portable era. Your mileage may vary as some games are harder to emulate than others. We currently don't have pricing or a release date for the PiBoy CM4x or SRX. We don't expect these to be cheap, as the PiBoy DMG often retails for $150. But for your money, you get a lot of gaming power in your pocket!
