A woman in England brought glamour to her neighborhood by dressing up to take out the trash each week during the pandemic, and even raised money for charity. Nicola Matthews works as a makeup artist and wanted to brighten up the gloom of 2020 with some lighthearted fun, news agency South West News Service (SWNS) reports. Inspired by "Britain’s Got Talent" host Amanda Holden hanging around the house in gowns, Matthews got dolled up to bring out the garbage – and the tradition stuck for 20 weeks."It was so funny dressing up and going out to push my wheelie bin," the 49-year-old said of the four-month stunt, affectionately nicknamed "wheelie bin Wednesday." Matthews said that her neighbor snapped her photo the first time she took out the trash in a glitzy outfit in their Waltham Abbey, Essex community, and the rest is history. On the whimsical Wednesdays, she’d carefully choose an outfit from her wardrobe of 25 gowns and 31 pairs of shoes, posing with the trash bins as neighbors Christine and Gary snapped her picture. The jokester went all-out with her fashion statements, adding props and paying homage to Desperate Housewives, Marilyn Monroe and Prince's "Purple Rain" as the weeks went on. Matthews also wore frocks made by her late grandmother Hilda Green, who was a professional dressmaker. "It was lovely to cheer people up through these times, and to get the dresses out. We have less and less need for long dresses these days," the makeup artist said. "My nan always said I made a great clothes horse, and the dresses she made me will always be my favorites," she added. "It was a really lovely thing to do, and I enjoyed it but 20 weeks was definitely enough." In May, Matthews even marched with a trash bin for 3.5 miles – in a gown and four-inch glitter heels – to raise money for the local fire station.

Porsche unveiled a plethora of previously unseen concepts back in November 2020, but this little roadster wasn’t one of them. Conceived in 2008, the 550one was commissioned by former Volkswagen Group supremo Ferdinand Piëch as a modern-day tribute to James Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder. Walter de Silva, the man behind the 550one’s design, took to Instagram to release images of the retro-flavored sports car. The 21st-century “Little Bastard” was kept a secret all these years and took the shape of a mid-engined roadster with design cues like the air intakes and central exhaust akin to those of the 1950s Porsche. At the back, there seems to be a spoiler that would electrically pop out at certain speeds, but the 550one is likely a fullsize static car model since the exhaust isn’t connected to anything. It had a fully designed interior cabin, complete with a lovely Audi R8-esque six-speed gated manual gearbox and door pull straps. Eagle-eyed readers will notice the door-mounted side air vents with their three-slot design carry over the air intake design and we’re seeing the same look on the central tunnel. The minimalist interior has exposed metal surfaces and aluminum pedals, along with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and the tachometer mounted front and center as with every other Porsche. According to the Italian magazine Quattroruote, the 550one never made it to production because the peeps from Zuffenhausen had bigger fish to fry at that time. Rather than investing in a product that would have overlapped with the Boxster to a great extent, Porsche spent the money elsewhere, namely funding the development of the Macan to cash in on the SUV craze. Ferdinand Karl Piëch passed away in 2019, and in his honor, Lamborghini added the “FKP 37” suffix to the Sian’s name after the former chairman’s initials and year of birth. While the 550one never made it to production, massively important cars were born in his era at the VW Group. The Audi Quattro and Bugatti Veyron are the ones enthusiasts will remember the most, but there were also a lot of hugely successful mainstream cars, along with a few flops like the overly engineered Phaeton.

In duelling rallies, President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden have urged voters in Georgia to turn out for elections on Tuesday that will decide which party controls the Senate. Mr Trump, a Republican, and Mr Biden, a Democrat, said the votes for two Senate seats would shape the US for years. More than three million Georgians have already cast ballots - nearly 40% of the state's registered voters. If the Democrats win, they will control all of Congress and the White House. 'I've never seen this energy in Georgia before' Why is the Georgia election so important? The Republican Senate incumbents in Georgia - Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue - are trying to hold off the Democratic challengers, Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock. The runoff is needed under Georgia's state election rules because none of the Senate candidates received more than 50% of the vote in November's US election. Voting begins at 07:00 (12:00 GMT) and ends about 12 hours later. What's at stake in Georgia? The vote will decide the balance of power in the US Senate. Republicans are currently in control, holding 52 of the 100 seats. If both Democrats win on Tuesday, the Senate will be evenly split, allowing incoming Democratic vice-president Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote. This would be crucial for pushing through Mr Biden's progressive agenda, including key issues such as health care and environmental regulations - issues with strong Republican opposition. The Senate also has the power to approve or reject Mr Biden's nominees for cabinet and judicial posts. If Mr Ossoff and Mr Warnock both win, it will bring the White House, Senate and the House of Representatives under Democratic control for the first time since President Barack Obama's election in 2008. What did Biden and Trump say? At a drive-in rally in Atlanta on Monday, Mr Biden told voters: "Georgia, the whole nation is looking to you. The power is literally in your hands." Flanked by Mr Ossoff and Mr Warnock, he said: "Unlike any time in my career, one state - one state - can chart the course, not just for the four years but for the next generation." Mr Biden also took aim at Mr Trump, accusing him of "whining and complaining" about November's presidential election result rather than concentrating on the Covid-19 pandemic. "I don't know why he still wants the job, he doesn't want to do the work," he said. On Monday evening at a rally in Dalton, President Trump told voters that the Georgia runoff was the "last line of defence" against the Democrats. In what may have been the last rally of his presidency, he said: "If the liberal Democrats take the Senate and the White House - and they're not taking this White House - we're going to fight like hell, I'll tell you right now." The president repeated unproven allegations that he was only declared the loser in Georgia after November's White House election because of fraud. Republican officials are worried this could depress turnout among the party faithful in Tuesday's vote. Mr Trump played this down, telling voters to "swarm it tomorrow". A Democrat has not won a Senate race in Georgia in 20 years, but the party will be buoyed by Mr Biden's presidential election win over Mr Trump there. The margin of victory was about 12,000 votes among five million cast. Mr Biden won 306 votes to Mr Trump's 232 in the US electoral college, which confirms the US president. Mr Biden won at least seven million more votes than the president.

Until recently, gamers have been reluctant to accept wireless mice as being on par with their wired counterparts, but mice equipped with Logitech’s lightspeed wireless sensor have been changing that story with excellent reviews and claims of virtually no input lag. This has led to a number of permutations of the Lightspeed brand, three of which are currently on sale and in stock across various websites. The mice in question are the G502 Lightspeed, the G703 Lightspeed and the G903 Lightspeed. All three are equipped with Logitech’s hero sensor, which initially released with a max DPI of 16,000 but can now hit 25,000 DPI after a software update. The G502 and G903 are more geared towards gamers with advanced features like removable weights, while the G703 is more minimal, aside from 2 RGB zones and a few extra buttons. The G502 Lightspeed is also on our best gaming mice list. Again, because all of these mice use the same sensor, which one you choose is a matter of build preference. Regardless of your pick, you’ll get a 1,000 Hz polling rate and 1ms response time. All of these mice are also compatible with Logitech Lightsync RGB for customizing their RGB zones. The Logitech G305 Lightspeed is also on sale today, though it is currently out of stock until January 11th. Amazon still appears to be accepting orders, though. Microsoft hackers tied to a massive intrusion of dozens of U.S. government agencies and private companies sneaked further into its systems than previously thought, although the intrusion doesn't appear to have caused any additional harm. The company said the hackers were able to view some of the code underlying Microsoft software, but weren't able to make any changes to it. Microsoft played down any risk associated with the additional intrusion, noting that its software development relies on code sharing within the company, a practice called "inner source." Likewise, Microsoft said it doesn't rely on keeping program code secret as a security measure and instead assumes that adversaries have seen its code and uses other defensive measures to frustrate attacks. The company said it found no evidence of hacker access to customer data and no indication that its systems were used to attack others. The hack began as early as March when malicious code was snuck into updates to SolarWinds software that monitors computer networks. Microsoft helped respond to the breach with cybersecurity firm FireEye, which discovered the hack when the security firm itself was targeted. Cybersecurity experts and U.S. officials suspect Russia was behind the hack. Microsoft said earlier this month that it identified more than 40 government agencies, think tanks, nongovernmental organizations and IT companies infiltrated by the hackers. Russia has denied that it is to blame.

Rust, the multiplayer survival game, will implement its first monthly update of the year on January 7 at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET. The devs stated in a Twitter post that players should expect a blueprint and map wipe, as well as Twitch drops. Other specifics are unknown as of this time. We'll be releasing our regular monthly update on January 7th at 19:00GMT / 14:00EST. The update will bring a forced blueprint + map wipe and we'll be enabling Twitch drops! further details will be posted in the update blog on the 7th. pic.twitter.com/L0kZ4B7CRH — Rust (@playrust) January 2, 2021 A blueprint wipe deletes, as the name implies, blueprints and players' data, including inventory and positions. A map wipe removes player-made structures, but keeps intact natural terrain and NPC towns--effectively resetting a map. Facepunch, the dev, regularly pushes map wipes at the beginning of every month. Facepunch will also be enabling Twitch drops, a feature that rewards players for watching Rust streams on Twitch. To get this feature, you need to activate Twitch drops on your Steam account. You can identify which streams to watch by checking if it has the Drops Enabled tag. 2020 was a pretty good year for Rust. It made Steam's Top Sellers and Most Played list, and streamers with big followings have been spreading the good word about the multiplayer-only survival game. Though Rust is only available for PC and macOS players currently, a console edition is in development. Double Eleven planned to release Rust's console editions in 2020, but was unable to. The company reassured players it was still working on the console port. A new release timeframe has not been announced yet.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti brings the entry price for Ampere GPUs down to $400, because apparently the GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3080, and GeForce RTX 3090 weren't selling out fast enough. Maybe that's not fair, but round four of the Nvidia Ampere architecture seems destined to repeat recent history and sell out within minutes of launch. The fact that this is now the best price to performance ratio in GPU land makes it one of the best graphics cards, and it currently occupies seventh place on our GPU Benchmarks hierarchy, not counting any Titan cards. Maybe if you've been really good (or you're really lucky), you'll be able to procure one this side of 2021. [Update: Yup, the RTX 3060 Ti sold out fast. Here's our advice on how to buy an RTX 3060 Ti (or other new Nvidia GPU).] Not a whole lot has changed relative to the RTX 3070. Both the RTX 3060 Ti and 3070 use the same GA104 GPU, but the 3060 Ti has fewer functional units enabled. You get the same 8GB of GDDR6 memory, clocked at the same 14Gbps. Meanwhile, the GPU core has 38 SMs enabled, versus 46 SMs on the 3070, making the 3060 Ti theoretically around 17 percent slower. Clock speeds also factor in a bit, as the boost clock on the 3060 Ti is 3.5 percent lower, so in general, the largest performance gap will be about 20 percent — and as we'll see, it's often quite a bit less than that. The specs tell the same story relative to the previous generation Nvidia Turing GPUs. The 3060 Ti has quite a bit more theoretical compute performance than the RTX 2080 Super, and more than doubles the compute performance relative to the RTX 2060 Super. We know GPU prices are all kinds of screwed up right now, but it's worth remembering that the 2060 Super had the same official $399 price as the 3060 Ti. Power requirements are slightly higher than the 2060 Super, but lower than the 2080 Super. Of course, theoretical specs don't always jive with real-world performance. One of the big changes with Ampere is that the INT32 cores can now do FP32 calculations as well. However, there's a decent amount of INT32 work in most games, so a good chunk of the potential FP32 performance is used up elsewhere. Still, with the other architectural changes, we expect the 3060 Ti to perform roughly on par with the 2080 Super, which means it will also be significantly faster than the 2060 Super. I didn't have good luck with the MSI Afterburner frequency scanner this round — it kept failing after 10-15 minutes or so of testing. That put us back to manually overclocking, which in practice usually means similar results, just with a bit more fiddling. We start by looping the Unigine Heaven 4.0 benchmark in a window at 1440p extreme, then bump up RAM clocks in 250 MHz increments until the GPU crashes or visual anomalies appear. Then we go back to the previous 'safe' level and repeat the same process for GPU clocks, except with 25 MHz increments. We were nearly able to max out the GDDR6 overclock at 16.5-17Gbps, but the EDR feature (Error Detection and Retry) meant performance was actually slower than a lesser RAM OC. Eventually, we stuck with a 1000 MHz overclock on the RAM (the best-case maximum would be in the 1000-1250 MHz range, based on our testing), giving an effective data rate of 16Gbps. For the GPU, 150 MHz was nearly stable but crashed in two tests, so we dropped down to a 140 MHz overclock that completed the full test suite. Besides changing the memory and GPU clocks, we also increased the power limit to the maximum 110 percent and adjusted the fan curve. That last one is critical for maintaining a stable overclock, as sticking with a default fan curve tends to lead to periodic crashes. Basically, we set the fan to a 50 percent minimum and gave it a steady ramp from 50 percent at 40C up to 100 percent at 80C. We could certainly do more tuning, but that was sufficient to keep temperatures in check and still wasn't overly loud. Advertisement Overclocked results are present in our standard benchmark charts, but not in the bonus extended tests or DirectX Raytracing (DXR) suites. We have several AIB 3060 Ti cards we'll be looking at in the future that have factory overclocks, so if you want something a bit more potent than the reference design, stay tuned

Air Conflicts: Secret Wars (Xbox 360[Reviewed], PlayStation 3, PC) Developer: Games Farm Publisher: bitComposer Released: July 8th (Europe), August, 2011 (North America) MSRP: €39,95 As DeeDee Derbec, a young and dashing female smuggler pilot who gets swept up into the events of World War II, you travel around the European theater doing what you're supposed to be doing: shooting down Nazis, bombing Nazis, and occasionally doing supply drops or flying basic stealth missions from point A to B. The game starts out rather dodgy, throwing "cutscenes" in your face that are just a single image which the camera pans over a couple of times -- focusing on different aspects of the image to fit the voice-over narration, if you're lucky. The first campaign or so sees you partaking in some truly awful missions that involve flying to a checkpoint or shooting down a few fighters or bombers, and strangely enough these missions can sometimes only take a few minutes to complete. If you stick with it and keep on playing, however, it actually becomes quite an enjoyable little game. Missions become slightly more varied, the story picks up, and you start to unlock more and more planes that each have their own statistics and weapon loadouts. The planes are sadly not very distinctive in the way they feel. Bombers are slow and handle even slower, with the option to use a turret and shoot backwards or sideways using the d-pad. Unfortunately, since the turret's power is pretty useless, you are unlikely to ever down more than 20 planes this way throughout the game. Fighters handle much better and are a lot faster, and later in the game you'll unlock the Me-262 jet fighter and Hortha-Gothen Flying Wing to mess around in. All the planes in the same class handle almost identically though, and you'll be hard pressed to notice the handling difference between a Mosquito and a Stuka. What's worse, all the planes lack a sense of speed. Only after flying all of them do you notice the difference, and even then it's hard to notice whether you are flying at 33% throttle or a maximum speed. Where the difference between planes does come in is in the weapon loadout, if you can call it that. Each plane has a set amount of rockets and bombs it can fire, which reload automatically at different speeds depending on the plane. It's an arcade game, so there's no resupplying or refueling or anything like that. Aircraft can be shot down with rockets if you're lucky, if you happen to get the time to line them up to an enemy that flies in a straight line, or if you shoot them right before smashing into a plane. The latter is the easiest option, as there is no collision model for planes in place. Planes do have some graphical damage modeling but it doesn't impact how the plane flies, making a Spitfire with half its wing shot off look pretty comical. To make up for that, you'll have little Nazi soldiers running for their lives on the ground and screaming in an explosion of blood when you bomb them to smithereens, and a mission in which you need to shoot down over a hundred Nazi paratroopers who go "Aaaah" when their parachutes collapse It's a shame that the missions are pretty drab. You'll go through the standard WWII scenarios under the guise of helping out resistance fighters throughout Eurasia, but at no point will you be surprised with the mission design. Compared to Ace Combat 6, IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and H.A.W.X., Air Conflicts: Secret Wars disappoints in this regard. It's a good thing the missions are at least pretty varied, as far as shooting down aircraft and bombing ground targets during WWII can provide variety. The controls work well enough, with only the left stick used for controlling your plane and the X and Y buttons for decelerating and accelerating. You're notified that decelerating will help you turn faster, but that's only an effective tactic for a handful of very slow or very fast planes. For the most part, it won't matter at all how fast you are going in a turn. If you try to fly in a loop, you will suddenly face downwards upside down without the option to roll around and escape a crash -- at least when using the arcade control scheme. Because the simulation control scheme is just no fun to use at all in this game, you are simply stuck with making normal turns and sometimes braking because you're used to doing so in a flight sim whether it actually does anything or not. Landing is a matter of flying through four loops after which you are instantly on the ground, and usually you can take off directly afterwards with the cargo or person of interest on board. You'll earn "Stars" for completing objectives and destroying enemies, which unlock new planes, but there's little feedback on how you can earn more of them. Likewise, you sometimes level up and get a skill point to spend on handling, endurance, critical hits ("You shot a pilot through the head!") and wingmen effectiveness. But there's no hint on how to earn these points or if they are just allotted for certain missions.. So far Air Conflicts: Secret Wars might sound like a truly terrible game and at times it can be. But for the most part, it can offer some stupid budget fun despite its faults. Enemy planes will dodge out of the way if you shoot at them, turning dogfights into an affair that will always keep you busy without taking minutes to down a single plane in a dogfight. Depending on the difficulty, there is a very generous lock-on reticule that makes shooting down enemy planes pretty easy. Only on the highest difficulty will the target reticule lock-on less often, and even then it's never hard to complete a mission. It's a very arcade experience that may feel dumbed down to the hardcore flight sim enthusiast, but this game doesn't try to satisfy that audience. If you can look past the game's faults, the gameplay has plenty of fun to offer. Surprisingly enough, the story is not terrible either. Penned by the writers at International Hobo, the story is in fact pretty depressing. Throughout the seven campaigns that make up DeeDee Derbec's story, she is always on the lookout to find out what happened to the father she never knew. All she knows is that he never returned from World War I. In each campaign, you will play a fighter who was on her father's squadron and fight a single mission alongside Guillaume Derbec. These missions are hard to fail, and merely serve to provide a backstory for her father's experience and character during the war. While a voice-over from one of DeeDee's father's old squadron mates tells her what had happened, you act out these events flying a biplane and make some simple bombing runs. Again, these missions offer nothing groundbreaking but a nice change of pace. As the story progresses, you will lose friends along the way and DeeDee turns from a simple happy-go-lucky alcoholic smuggler into one of the most depressing characters you are likely to find in any video game. Even right up to the finale, everything about DeeDee's adventures is a tale of atrocities, mass murder, the bombing of field hospitals, the loss of friends, and her descend into a war-torn woman who is slowly stripped of a soul. Sadly, while the story and script might surprise you at times given the budget nature and the genre of the game, the voice acting ruins almost all of it. Only four actors do the voices of around 12 characters, and when DeeDee is talking with her awful French accent to a Russian resistance fighter who has the exact same voice, it can become hilarious at times. Despite the title mentioning Secret Wars, there is not really any secret war to speak of. The story about helping out the resistance in various regions is a nice break from the standard RAF superhero pilot story, but don't expect anything as grand as Secret Weapons Over Normandy. Air Conflicts: Secret Wars is a weird game. Everything from the graphics to the music and sound is passable, and it doesn't hold up to the best this genre has to offer on the consoles. But strangely enough, it can be a damn enjoyable little game to play. Even though it's stitched together from pieces of varying quality and even though the writing cannot save the boring cutscenes or the mission designs that never rise above mediocrity, it's still a lot more fun than most other budget simulator games on the consoles. Hell, it's more fun than the awfully disappointing H.A.W.X. 2. Make no mistake, this is game that no one but the most avid of console flight sim fans should ever play. If you can look past its budget production values and design, there's about 7-8 hours of missions and multiplayer that practically nobody but the Achievement whores seem to be playing online -- though there is system-link multiplayer that will also give you Achievements if you are into that. Air Conflicts: Secret Wars might be a budget title in price, looks, and polish. But it's a simple and surprisingly enjoyable game that hardcore fans of the genre will enjoy if they can go in with low expectations. It doesn't do anything new or anything special but if you see it discounted (it already dropped to half price in Europe within two weeks of release), or if you can rent it, you might have more fun with it than you might expect. ------------------------------------- Game System Requirments -------------------------------------- Minimum --------------------------------------- Système d'exploitation : Windows XP / Windows 7 / Windows Vista Processeur : Intel / AMD d'au moins 1.1 GHz Mémoire vive : 1 Go de RAM Carte graphique : Carte compatible Shader 3.0 et comportant 256 Mo de mémoire vidéo Disque dur : 4.5 Go d'espace disque disponible ------------------------------- Recommended ------------------------------ Système d'exploitation : Windows XP / Windows 7 / Windows Vista Processeur : Intel / AMD 1.8 GHz Mémoire vive : 1.5 Go de RAM Carte graphique : GeForce 9X ou meilleure comportant 512 Mo de mémoire vidéo Disque dur : 4.5 Go d'espace disque disponible ---------------------------

We’re all in favor of cleaning hacks that make chores easier to do. This simple move will save you from hours of climbing up on a step stool to clean hard-to-reach places. Your roll of waxed paper will save you from having dusty cabinet tops and grease splatters around the kitchen. What Is the waxed paper hack? It’s so simple: You place a sheet of waxed paper on top of hard-to-see surfaces. Instead of sticking to the tops of cabinets, particles will stick to the surface of the waxed paper. Then, when it’s time to deep-clean the house, all you have to do is carefully fold the sheet up, toss it, and replace with a fresh one. If you have a powerful ceiling fan, or want to place the waxed paper somewhere that may be drafty, use double-sided tape to secure the paper in place and ensure that no dirt or grime can get underneath it. The sheets of waxed paper should be replaced every three to four months. To help you remember, swap the sheets when you switch out seasonal decorations. For example, top the cabinets with fresh waxed paper when you’re bringing out the pumpkins for Halloween, then do it again when you’re putting away holiday decorations. To make this kitchen hack more environmentally friendly, wipe the sheet of waxed paper with a damp cloth, and then get rid of the dust in the washing machine. You may still be dusting, but at least you don’t have to reach up high to do it! This hack also works well in low-traffic rooms. You can line dressers and chests in a guest room that don’t see much use. Right before your guests come to town, toss the dusty paper. It’s an easy way to make an out-of-town guest’s visit less stressful. Now that waxed paper has saved you from hauling out that step stool, see what other ways the humble roll can be useful around the house.

The numbers are record-setting and show that Tesla continues to ramp up sales. Tesla has just released its Q4 2020 production and delivery report, so the numbers are now in. See how Tesla fared this quarter right here. At 180,570 global deliveries of the Model Y, Model 3, Model S and Model X combined, Tesla seems to have just about met expectations and actually set an all-time delivery record last quarter. The target numbers ranged from about 190,000 to 200,000, so Tesla came out a bit below those expectations, but still, the 180,570 is a new all-time record for deliveries in a single quarter for Tesla. Here's the graphic showing the figures: For Q4 2020, Tesla lists Model 3/Y deliveries at 161,650. Meanwhile, the combined Model S and Model X deliveries hit 18,920. The production itself was 179,757 in total. On the production front, Tesla says Model 3/Y production hit 163,660 for Q4, while Model S and X were at 16,097 combined. The grand goal of delivering 500,000 Teslas in 2020 was almost met with the actual total coming in at 499,550. Meanwhile, production for the year blew past a half-million at 509,737. Congrats to Tesla on achieving such outstanding record-setting results. Hopefully, this will again lead to another profitable quarter for Tesla. Tesla adds: In 2020, we produced and delivered half a million vehicles, in line with our most recent guidance. In addition, Model Y production in Shanghai has begun, with deliveries expected to begin shortly. And there's this disclaimer, which indicates the actual results may be a bit higher: Our net income and cash flow results will be announced along with the rest of our financial performance when we announce Q4 earnings. Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5% or more. Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles.

Suspected Islamist militants have attacked two villages in Niger, with reports of dozens civilians killed. Around 49 died and 17 were injured in the village of Tchombangou, while another 30 died in Zaroumdareye - both near Niger's western border with Mali, Reuters reports. There have been several recent violent incidents in Africa's Sahel region, carried out by militant groups. France said on Saturday that two of its soldiers were killed in Mali. Hours earlier, a group with links to al-Qaeda said it was behind the killing of three French troops in a separate attack in Mali on Monday. How West Africa is under threat from Islamist militants Africa's Sahel becomes latest al-Qaeda-IS battleground France has been leading a coalition of West African and European allies against Islamist militants in the Sahel. But the region continues to be affected by ethnic violence, banditry, and human and drug trafficking. In light of Saturday's attacks, Interior Minister Alkache Alhada said soldiers had been sent to the area, according to French outlet RFI. But Mr Alhada did not say how many casualties there had been across the two villages. A local official, quoted by AFP news agency, said many people were killed, and a local journalist spoke of up to 50 deaths. Niger's Tillabéri region, where the villages are situated, lies within the so-called tri-border area between Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, which has been plagued by jihadi attacks in recent years. Travel by motorbike has been banned in the region for a year, as part of efforts to stop incursions by Islamic militants, who often launch attacks from the vehicles. Areas of Niger are also facing repeated attacks by jihadists from Nigeria, where the government is fighting an insurgency by Boko Haram. Last month, members of the group killed at least 27 people in Niger's south-eastern Diffa region. The latest attacks in Tillabéri come amid national elections in Niger, as President Mahamadou Issoufou steps down after two five-year terms. Election officials announced provisional results on Saturday, showing a lead for Mohamed Bazoum - a former minister and a member of Niger's ruling party. A second round of votes is expected to be held on 21 February, once ballots have been validated by the country's constitutional court.
