Those moonface kitties are captivatingly cute, but their flattened features belie the feline’s true feelings. New research shared in The Conversation, a website where researchers write and publish their own articles, reveals that cats with a wide countenance are unable to express emotions as adeptly as their narrow-faced counterparts. Breeds such as Persians, Himalayans or the beloved "Grumpy Cat" (may she rest in peace), are a result of selective breeding — thus, inbreeding — by humans in pursuit of an even more cuddly cat. No matter if they’re relaxed, frightened or hungry, their pouty mien sticks. Unfortunately, this could mean that brachycephalic cats aren’t getting the attention they need from owners, wrote study author Lauren Finka, whose findings were published in the journal Frontiers of Veterinary Science. Her work is some of the first-ever to investigate how these physical changes due to selective breeding have impacted a cat’s ability to communicate. Finka’s team programmed an algorithm to analyze over 2,000 cat faces for how distressed they appear. Researchers acknowledged that feline facial expressions are known to be subtle, especially to humans, but the computer analysis was more likely to assume a "pain-like" emotion in flat-faced, "brachycephalic" cats, compared to cats with elongated "dolichocephalic" faces or proportional "mesocephalic" faces. The trendy Scottish Fold, which may come with a price tag of hundreds to over $1,000, according to some breeders, was the type most likely to be misidentified as scowling, even while shown in full repose. The breed is a favorite among celebrities, including Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. Over time, humans have tended to breed pets with the goal of keeping them puppies and kittens forever, making them smaller, fluffier and helpless as can be. "We likely have an innate preference for pain-like features because they probably tap into our drive to nurture," Finka told Live Science, who characterizes the smooshy-faced frown as baby-like. "We feel sorry for them." Veterinarians were previously aware of the other ways brachycephalic faces result in a lower quality of life for some cats, such as trouble breathing, obstructed vision and excessive skin folding, which can become irritating for the cat. On top of that, the new study indicates that pet parents also can’t be sure whether or not their precious is in pain or needs medical attention. Finka prefers to see fewer "problematic" breeding practices and has encouraged future pet buyers "to do your research" before bringing these breeds home. Her advice comes at a time when pet adoption and purchasing is at an all-time high in the US and elsewhere, as more home-dwellers seek animal companionship during the pandemic. "If purchasing a pet from a breeder, ensure that the desired breed does not typically suffer from chronic health problems and choose the breeder carefully," she wrote.

[Auto] Next-Gen BMW 7 Series Spied With Its Chin Up In The Snow
Sxynix posted a topic in Auto / Moto
We've seen the next-generation BMW 7 Series before, but not quite like this. Our previous sightings included some form of electrification under the camo-wrapped skin, but our spy sources tell us this prototype is pure internal combustion. Visually that won't make much of a difference, at least at this stage of the process. But the sharp contrast of a black body wrap against white snow does highlight some interesting features. The biggest buzz surrounding the next 7 Series isn't whether it will have a bonkers 4 Series grille, though we do see a disturbing similarity in the way it dips to the lower fascia and curves at the corners. Instead, all eyes are examining the squared fascia, which certainly appears to take cues from the beefy X7. Exactly how chiseled it gets remains to be seen, and we mean that literally since early prototypes like this are still well concealed with a body wrap and false panels. Gallery: Next-Generation BMW 7 Series Spy Photos BMW 7 Series Side View Spy Photo 27 Photos Speaking of which, check out how the light catches the hood in profile shots. It almost looks like rivets are underneath the wrap, though we could be seeing any number of things. The takeaway is that BMW likely has more clever concealment happening here than just a dark body wrap. Also, we are still very early in the development process – note the janky exhaust tips used for emissions testing at the back, not to mention placeholder taillights. -
Former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial over his role in the deadly US Capitol riot is set to begin next week in the Senate, Democrats say. On Monday, the House of Representatives will deliver the impeachment charge to the Senate, triggering the trial process in the 100-member chamber. Republicans had argued for a delay, asking for more time to prepare. Mr Trump's impeachment trial will be the only one ever to have taken place after a president has left office. Mr Trump's term ended on Wednesday. He left Washington DC ahead of his successor Joe Biden's inauguration. The House of Representatives last week charged Mr Trump with inciting a deadly riot at the US Capitol, paving the way for a Senate trial. If convicted, he could be barred from future office. Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said on Friday that the House would deliver the impeachment article on Monday. Unless Democrats, who took control of the Senate this week, change the rules, it will mean Mr Trump's trial will begin on Tuesday. media captionSchumer sets out the next steps in the case against Mr Trump "The Senate will conduct a trial of the impeachment of Donald Trump. It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial," Mr Schumer said on the floor of the Senate. Mr Trump's actions ahead of the 6 January riot are at the heart of the case. The then-president told protesters near the White House to "peacefully and patriotically" make their voices heard as they prepared to march towards the US Capitol building. He also told them to "fight like hell". Trump impeachment: What happens next? How will history remember Trump? Biden's new-look Oval Office a nod to past leaders The demonstration turned ugly as a mob forced its way into the congressional complex where lawmakers were certifying Mr Biden's election victory. Four protesters and a Capitol Police officer died in the mayhem. A week later, Mr Trump became the first US president to be impeached twice. Ten House Republicans sided with Democrats to do so. media captionWhen a mob stormed the US capitol 2px presentational grey line Impeachment: The basics What is impeachment? Impeachment is when a sitting president is charged with crimes. In this case, former President Trump is accused of having incited insurrection What has already happened? The House of Representatives voted to impeach Mr Trump for a second time on 13 January, shifting the process to the Senate for a trial - but that trial could not be carried out before he left office on 20 January So what does it mean? A trial can still happen although Mr Trump's term has ended, and senators can vote to bar him from holding public office again 2px presentational grey line What had Republicans asked for? Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell had asked House Democrats to delay sending the impeachment article to the Senate until 28 January. This would have given Mr Trump two weeks to submit his pre-trial defence, with arguments then beginning mid-February. But Republicans, who as of Wednesday no longer control the Senate, failed to gain the support of new Democratic leader Mr Schumer. Speaking on the Senate floor on Friday, Mr McConnell acknowledged his request had been rejected. He condemned the "unprecedentedly fast" process in the House earlier this month, when Mr Trump was impeached in one day. "The sequel cannot be an insufficient Senate process that denies former president Trump his due process or damages the Senate or the presidency itself." Mr McConnell added that delay would also have given Democrats more time to confirm Biden cabinet officials and pass an economic stimulus bill. Do Republican voters buy Biden's unity message? What happens to impeached presidents? A visual guide to the Congress riots In a statement on Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed the article would be submitted on Monday. She also noted that the impeachment managers, the Democratic House lawmakers who will serve as prosecutors in trial, will have the same amount of time to prepare as Mr Trump's legal team. On Thursday, Mrs Pelosi had said she rejected the notion that Mr Trump should "get out of jail card" just because he had left office. media captionHow did Republicans defend Trump - and who voted to impeach? Even though Democrats now hold a narrow Senate majority, they would need the support of at least 17 Republicans in order to convict Mr Trump, because a two-thirds vote is required. A handful of Senate Republicans have indicated they are open to conviction, but most have either cast doubt on the legality of trying a president after he has left office, or said the process would be too divisive. Meanwhile, Republicans continue to chair Senate committees while Senators McConnell and Schumer work out a new power sharing agreement, laying out rules for the evenly split chamber. Some Democrats wish to abolish the filibuster, a delaying tactic where members of the minority party can drag out policy debate. Republicans, however, want to retain a filibuster rule that allows any one Senator to call for legislation to pass by a 60% majority, rather than a simple 50% majority.

The first alleged independent benchmark results of AMD's recently introduced eight-core Ryzen 9 5980HS "Cezanne" laptop processors have been published. AMD's Zen 3-based chip uses integrated Radeon graphics, and, according to the new numbers, beats its predecessor and Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake in single and multi-core workloads, as well as 11th Gen intel Tiger Lake in single-core. Yet, there is a processor that beats AMD's Cezanne. Hardware enthusiast @Tum_Apisak found two Geekbench 5 results from the Asus ROG Flow X13. The gaming notebook runs the eight-core Ryzen 9 5980HS at a 3.30 GHz default clock speed and can boost it all the way to a 4.53 GHz. In one case, AMD's Cezanne APU hit a 1,532 single-core score and 8,219 multi-core score. In another case, the processor finished with 1,541 single-core points and 8,224 multi-core points. When compared to previous-generation AMD and Intel architectures, the new Cezanne looks very good The most interesting comparison we can make with a Zen 3 APU is with an Intel Willow Cove processor. Since Intel hasn't launched its eight-core Tiger Lake-H chips yet, the only available CPUs featuring the Willow Cove microarchitecture are quad-core Core i7 1100-series "Tiger Lake-U" processors. These CPUs are not quite meant for gaming machines and, therefore, come inside notebooks with less sophisticated cooling. Generally, Intel Core i7-1185G7-based machines score 1,350-1450 single-core points on Geekbench 5. A well-cooled example can hit around 1,550 on a single core and about 5,600 on multi-cores. Therefore, it looks like mobile CPUs featuring AMD's Zen 3 and Intel's Willow Cove cores have comparable single-core performance (assuming that both are cooled properly). Naturally, AMD's eight-core gaming APU naturally beats Intel's quad-core CPU in workloads leveraging multiple cores. As far as Geekbench 5 results go, AMD's Ryzen 9 5980HS looks like a very potent mobile APU with a 35W TDP. Yet, it's not unbeatable. Apple's tiny M1 system-on-chip (SoC) running at 3.20 GHz scored 11% better than the Ryzen 9 5980HS in single-core workloads and 7% worse in multi-core workloads while consuming about 30% less power, assuming that its TDP is up to 24W. Typically, AMD's eight-core Ryzen 9 4900H "Renoir" APUs, based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture, scores about 1,230 single-core points and around 7,100 multi-core points when running at 3.30 / 4.44 GHz clocks in Geekbench 5. Therefore, the new Cezanne APU is apparently 25% faster than its Renoir predecessor in single-core tasks and about 15% faster in multi-core workloads. Cezanne's noticeably higher performance compared to its predecessor can be explained by microarchitectural improvements, as well as a two times larger L2 cache. The Ryzen 94900H is rated for up to a 54W TDP, whereas the new one has a default TDP of 35W. A comparison of the new numbers for the Ryzen 9 5980HS to Intel's eight-core Core i9-10885H, Intel's fastest mobile Comet Lake CPU with a locked multiplier, suggests the Ryzen 9 5980HS is 15% faster in single-core workloads and 4% faster in multi-core tasks. It should be noted that the Ryzen 9 5980HS numbers haven't been confirmed, so you should take them with a grain of salt.

Hitman 3's second mission, set in Dartmoor, has the usual objective: Find a way to assassinate a particular target without anyone knowing. But it also carries a secondary requirement for Agent 47, asking you to locate a case file about Arthur Edwards, Hitman 3's primary antagonist. Getting that file requires as intricate a solution as taking out an assassination target, but you can't complete Dartmoor without it. Luckily, there are multiple ways to snag the Case File in Dartmoor, so you have plenty of options. Here's a rundown of all the ways you can find the Case File in Dartmoor and what you'll need to do to get it. Be sure to check out the rest of our Hitman 3 coverage, including our Hitman 3 review, complete guides on finding all the Dartmoor murdery mystery clues and murder mystery solutions, and guides for the rest of Hitman 3's missions, as well. Complete the Murder Mystery and present your findings to Alexa Carlisle and you can ask for the Case File as payment. Complete the Murder Mystery and present your findings to Alexa Carlisle and you can ask for the Case File as payment. Solution 1: Complete The Murder Mystery If you're already working through Dartmoor's murder mystery to get close to your assassination target, Alexa Carlisle, you can get the Arthur Edwards Case File along the way. You'll need to complete the Means, Motive and Opportunity Mission Story to get access to the case file this way, but the good news is, if you solve the case, you can request the file as your payment. To kick off the murder mystery, tail the private detective as he enters the mansion. The best place to grab him is when he moves into the hallway near the Trophy Room, which you can enter through a window. From there, find all the clues in Zachary Carlisle's room, locate all the clues in Emma and Gregory's room, find the muddy footprints clue on the terrace outside the sitting room, and check the Greenhouse for clues. That should give you enough evidence to lock down one of the three solutions for the case. When you've got enough evidence, meet with Fernsby the butler, who will lead you to Alexa to present your findings. Once you've done that, you can request the Case File as your payment. With it in hand, you're free to assassinate Alexa as you see fit and end the mission. Note that you can get the Case File for any of the three completions of the mystery. For a complete rundown of all the possible solutions, check out our Hitman 3 Murder Mystery guide. Solution 2: Track Down The Tokens You don't technically have to get the Case File from inside Thornbridge Manor in Dartmoor, so long as you can find the means to get it outside of the mission. There's a copy of the file kept in a safe deposit box in a bank in New York (in fact, it's one of the DLC mission locations in Hitman 2) where Agent 47 can acquire the Arthur Edwards file. To get it, you need two special tokens, however, and each one is carried by a different person. If you eavesdrop on Fernsby talking to Alexa, the two bodyguards outside the mansion near the staff rooms, or Rebecca Carlisle, you'll get the skinny on the tokens. One is held by Rebecca and the other by Fernsby. You need both of them to complete the objective. To get the tokens, you essentially just need to knock out both characters without alerting anyone. This is a little bit easier said than done, though--Rebecca hangs out in the Trophy Room with several other characters, while Fernsby roves the entire mansion. Both are tough to get alone. How To Get Rebecca's Token The easiest way to get Rebecca on her own is with poison. Find a Mansion Staff uniform and head to the kitchen and staff area. You'll find rat poison on one of the shelves in the staff room. Take it to the Trophy Room; with this uniform, you should be able to poison a water bottle on the table that also holds some various documents without alarming anyone. Hang around for a few minutes and Rebecca will eventually take a drink and get sick. Follow Rebecca to the nearby bathroom and you can incapacitate her and hide her body. Check the ground for the token, which will drop where you knocked her out. How To Get Fernsby's Token Fernsby wanders the first and second floors of the mansion, and it can be tough to isolate him because of this. He'll also recognize you in certain disguises, which can make it tough to get close to him. The best way to lure him off into a corner, it seems, is to trigger a vacuum cleaner distraction along his patrol route. There's a handy one right under one of the staircases that leads to the second floor. When Fernsby heads down to the foyer, hit the vacuum under the staircase and wait for him to come deal with it. This distraction has the added benefit of not triggering the two bodyguards who stand nearby. Knock Fernsby out under the stairs and drop him in the conveniently placed trunk right beside the vacuum. That'll get you his token. It's also possible to puzzle out the combination to Alexa Carlisle's safe and steal the file from her personal office, but you'll have to get there safely. It's also possible to puzzle out the combination to Alexa Carlisle's safe and steal the file from her personal office, but you'll have to get there safely. Solution 3: Crack The Safe There's one more direct route to get the Case File--you can take it out of Alexa Carlisle's safe without dealing with her. To do that, you need to get up to her third-floor office, which you can accomplish by scaling pipes and ledges outside the mansion, or by sneaking up to the third floor with the right clothes. If you're going all the way up, you'll need either the Mansion Staff disguise or the Bodyguard disguise, but be wary of taking the stairs, as multiple vigilant characters stand between you and the office. It's best to get into the office while Alexa Carlisle is elsewhere. You might want to fix the problems of either the Undertaker or Photographer, or both, which will lure Alexa out to deal with those characters. To send her to the Undertaker, use a gun (preferably silenced) to shoot the bird nests out of the trees beside the gravesite. To send her to the Photographer, locate a fuse and put it in the electrical box that's connected to the camera. You can find a fuse either in the hallway beside the Butler's Office or take one from the electrical box near the mansion's outside staircase.

It turns out mo’ money may actually mean mo’ smiles. While traditional wisdom tells us that money can’t buy happiness, a new study suggests that the opposite may in fact be true. The research also indicates that previous studies, which indicated some sort of limit to the amount of money that impacts happiness, may have been wrong. Matthew Killingsworth, a senior fellow at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, recently released his findings on the relationship between money and well-being, Penn Today reports. His research reportedly differed from previous studies on this subject, which ranked participPrevious research also suggested that the relationship between money and happiness seemed to plateau for people making $75,000 per year or more. ants’ happiness based on their overall satisfaction with life. Killingsworth asked his participants to rank their happiness using an app that would randomly check-in with them, from time to time. The app would ask questions ranging from "How do you feel right now?" and "Overall, how satisfied are you with your life?" This allowed Killingsworth to rank users’ happiness both in how they felt overall, and how they felt in the moment. "Scientists often talk about trying to get a representative sample of the po[CENSORED]tion," he told Penn Today. "I was trying to get a representative sample of the moments of people’s lives." More than 33,000 people participated in the study — and in the end, Killingsworth says the data showed that "all forms of well-being continued to rise with income." "When you have more money, you have more choices about how to live your life. You can likely see this in the pandemic. People living paycheck to paycheck who lose their job might need to take the first available job to stay afloat, even if it’s one they dislike. People with a financial cushion can wait for one that’s a better fit," he explained. "Across decisions big and small, having more money gives a person more choices and a greater sense of autonomy."

Now that the Ford Mustang Mach-E deliveries are underway, we can expect aftermarket firms to introduce a variety of parts for owners to customize their new EV. Motion R Design is entering this market while things are hot by introducing a body kit and wheels for the electric crossover. The kit includes a new grille that removes the pony logo and adds slats to the nose. The front fascia is more aggressive by incorporating large inlets in the center and corners. There are also fender flares for broadening the Mach-E's stance. The combination of components make the vehicle's face more eye-catching than stock but without looking cartoonishly ostentatious, which is often an issue with body kits. Gallery: Ford Mustang Mach-E by Motion R Design Ford Mustang Mach-E by Motion R Design Front Corner 5 Photos The components include new side sills that run between the fender flares. At the back, Motion R Design adds a spoiler below the window on the rear hatch. The company also installs a diffuser below the fascia. All of the pieces are available in either 2x2 carbon fiber or a forged carbon weave. Motion R Design also works with Quantum44 to get the company's Q44 Flow Forged wheels. They feature skinny spokes, and some widen as they meet the rim. Their size perfectly fill the space in the fenders. While not visible in these photos, Motion R Design also has interior tweaks for the Mach-E. The company offers a flat-bottom steering wheel and carbon fiber door panels. Nappa leather upholstery throughout the cabin is available, too. Ford began really ramping up Mach-E production in late 2020, including building 2,545 of them in November and 3,129 in December. The company intends to assembly 50,000 units for the first year.

Incoming presidents bring their own personal touch to the Oval Office and much is being read into the way Joe Biden has chosen to decorate his new place of work. The room has been filled with portraits and busts of some of the most iconic and influential leaders of American history. "It was important for President Biden to walk into an Oval that looked like America and started to show the landscape of who he is going to be as president," Ashley Williams, the deputy director of Oval Office operations, told The Washington Post during an exclusive tour. NZXT introduced placing a small LCD panel on an AIO CPU cooler to the market, and people seem to be taking well to it. We also started seeing GPUs with small screens on them, but now, it appears the real winner of this po[CENSORED]rity contest will be Asus. Asus recently showed off a CPU cooler with such a big screen (spotted by @momomo_us), it kind of had us scratching our heads. I mean, just look at the thing... why does a CPU block need a 3.5-inch LCD panel on it? Cool factor aside, the unit is called the ROG Ryunjin II 240, and it comes in as a successor to the original ROG Ryunjin 240, which had similar styling and a large CPU block, but a much smaller OLED screen. The exact specs are unknown at this time, so we can't comment on which exact fan models they are (for RPM), nor the resolution of the screen, or pump type and speeds. We also don't have any other pictures, but I think we can all imagine quite well what this will look like in a system. All we know is that this joyfully ridiculous monstrosity is coming, and in all honestly, I'm looking forward to it.

Cisco is bringing hand gestures to its Webex video conferencing software to make it easier for participants to express themselves even while on mute. Gestures and non-verbal cues have long been an important part of face-to-face meetings as they allow a speaker to emphasize or support their ideas and give the audience a chance to provide real-time feedback. However, the transition to working from home has made it difficult for users to communicate in this way while on a video call. For this reason, Cisco is now using AI to take users' natural, non-verbal gestures and translate them into animated images that everyone in a meeting can see on-screen. As a result, meeting participants can provide feedback to their coworkers without having to unmute themselves or use their keyboard or mouse. We've built a list of the best video conferencing software around These are the best business webcams for working from home Also check out our “Gestures can bridge language, geographical boarders, and even personality types ―often saying more than a thousand words. But now that most meetings are remote and half the people in a meeting are on mute, reading non-verbal cues has become more challenging. At Cisco we’re determined to power an inclusive future, with collaboration technology that levels the playing field and makes experiences 10x better ―regardless of the language you speak, or where or how you work.” Gestures in Webex Gestures are now available in the latest version of Cisco Webex and to begin using them, users will need to navigate to the bottom of the screen, click on the reaction button and toggle “Recognize hand gestures” on. Once enabled, Cisco's AI will automatically detect hand gestures such as thumbs up, thumbs down and clapping and display them as a reaction in a user's video window. Meeting participants will also be able to react using smiling, laughing, shocked and party emojis while in a video call. Cisco is well aware that gestures can be interpreted differently in other parts of the world which is why the new feature will be localized to respect cultural differences. Webex's new gesture feature will be generally available this month and depending on its reception, we could also see Microsoft Teams, Zoom and other video conferencing software implement similar ways to communicate in a video call using non-verbal cues and gestures. roundup of the best business laptops

The customer isn’t always right. A woman reportedly assaulted multiple employees at a Wendy’s restaurant in Indiana on Monday afternoon, allegedly after becoming angry about being denied a refund for her order. The incident occurred around 1:45 in the afternoon, after the suspect ordered food from a Wendy’s in the town of Mishawaka and initially left without incident, WNDU reports. She later returned, however, and demanded a refund. When the restaurant refused, the suspect allegedly threw food at one of the employees, then slammed a plexiglass barrier against another worker’s face. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP This isn't the only violent incident perpetrated by an unhappy fast-food customer in recent weeks. Authorities in New Mexico recently took a man into custody after he allegedly threatened a McDonald's worker with a gun at a drive-thru, apparently upset about a mistake in his order. The incident occurred at a McDonald’s in Albuquerque in early January. The suspect, Estevan Gonzalez, reportedly drove up to the drive-thru window to complain that there was an issue with his food. His meal was replaced, but then Gonzales allegedly got back in line, pulled a gun, and pointed it at the employee. When authorities arrived on the scene, Gonzalez reportedly drove away. In this case, however, police helicopters followed the suspect until officers were able to catch up and arrest him. Gonzalez reportedly told officers that he was "only trying to get a hamburger from McDonald’s." Fox Nation

US President-elect Joe Biden is to undo one of Donald Trump's last actions in office by blocking his decree lifting Covid travel bans on visitors from much of Europe and Brazil. Mr Biden's spokeswoman said now was not the time to be easing travel measures. Joe Biden will take office at 12:00 (17:00 GMT) on Wednesday. However, much of the spotlight is on Mr Trump's final moves, including presidential pardons. Security is intense in Washington DC ahead of the inauguration ceremony. Thousands of National Guard reserve soldiers have been deployed in the wake of the storming of the Capitol building by a pro-Trump mob on 6 January that left five people dead. The FBI had earlier warned of possible protests across the nation by right-wing extremists emboldened by the invasion. Latest updates: Pardons expected on Trump's final full day How the White House gets ready for a new president When are Biden and Harris sworn in? What was the Trump decree about? The US imposed travel restrictions on Europe last March and the Brazilian entry ban was put in place in May, but the White House decreed on Monday that the entry ban would end on 26 January, six days after Mr Biden takes office. Just minutes later, Mr Biden's spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said on Twitter: "On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26. In fact, we plan to strengthen public health measures around international travel in order to further mitigate the spread of Covid-19." She said that with "more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel". What else might Trump do on his final full day? Barred from Twitter following the Capitol riots, the president has been uncharacteristically quiet and there have been few details of what he might do on Tuesday. A statement from the White House press office read simply: "President Trump will work from early in the morning until late in the evening. He will make many calls and have many meetings." There has been no invitation to Joe Biden for the traditional pre-inauguration meeting at the White House. What of the inauguration ceremony? The ceremony will be unlike any other. The number of spectators will be greatly reduced, some 25,000 National Guard soldiers are being deployed and Donald Trump will snub his successor by not attending - something that has not happened for more than 150 years. On Monday, the Capitol complex was briefly locked down after a security alert. Some 200,000 flags, bathed in light, have been planted on the National Mall to represent the crowds who cannot attend and reflect on those who have lost their lives to Covid. The inauguration ceremony will feature performances by Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez. Mr Trump will head to Florida early on Wednesday, using up his presidential travel privileges by taking Marine One to Joint Base Andrews and then boarding Air Force One. Bloomberg said Mr Trump was planning a military send-off for himself at Andrews. What is Joe Biden initially planning to do? On Tuesday he is scheduled to deliver an evening address on Covid from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. He is set to immediately reverse a number of Trump policies, scrapping the ban on travellers from some mainly Muslim countries and rejoining the Paris climate accord. He will also focus on reuniting families separated at the US-Mexico border and issuing mandates on Covid-19 and mask-wearing. Mr Biden will also cancel the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline on his first day in office, US media report. Biden economic plans challenged at Yellen hearing The pipeline is projected to carry oil nearly 1,200 miles (1,900km) from the Canadian province of Alberta down to Nebraska, to join an existing pipeline. Environmentalists and Native American groups have fought the project for more than a decade. Confirmation hearings for Mr Biden's appointees begin later on Tuesday.

A never-before-seen Alder Lake-S processor sample (via momomo_us) has surfaced with improved specifications and DDR5 support. The hybrid chip seemingly sports the same 16-core, 32-thread configuration as an early sample that appeared back in October. SiSoftware detects the Alder Lake-S part as a 16-core part, meaning there are eight Golden Cove cores and eight Gracemont cores onboard. The configuration coincides with one of many possible Alder Lake-S combinations that appeared in a coreboot patch. Unless Intel has another combination in the pipeline, the 16-core Alder Lake-S should be the flagship SKU. The new Alder Lake-S sample reportedly features a 1.8 GHz base clock, 400 MHz higher than the previous leaked sample. It's uncertain if the two are the same processor or if Intel has managed to improve the previous chip's base clock. On this occasion, the software was able to pick up the processor's boost clock speed that's apparently configured to 4 GHz. The cache configuration remains unaltered: We still see the 12.5MB of L2 cache and 30MB of L3 cache. Surprisingly, the 1.4 GHz Alder Lake-S chip delivers a 21% higher score on the processor multi-media test than the 1.8 GHz sample. It's plausible that SiSoftware's Sandra benchamrk software isn't yet fully optimized for Alder Lake-S. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Alder Lake-S arrives with a hybrid setup, so the whole high-performance and high-efficiency core arrangement can trip some software up. The 1.8 GHz Alder Lake-S part does score better in some of the other tests though. The memory bandwidth test is one of the benchmarks that stand out the most. There's an improvement up to a whopping 153.6%. The logical reasoning behind the substantial uplift is that the previous Alder Lake-S was paired with DDR4 memory, while the new sample purportedly runs with DDR5 memory. The overall GPU score also saw an improvement up to 38.6% on the 1.8 GHz sample. The submission revealed a similar iGPU configuration with 32 Execution Units (EUs), totaling to 256 shading units. Evidently, the new sample was clocked at 1.5 GHz, up to 350 MHz higher than the prior sample. The new benchmarks certainly restores some faith in Alder Lake-S. It seems that Intel has been playing with the heterogeneous chips to see how far they can go. Alder Lake-S will land in the second half of this year. So there is, admittedly, more than enough time for further improvements.

The best file compression software will make it easy to compress files for easy storage, while also being able to work with multiple compression file types. With the right file compression software, sharing and archiving files is easy. The ever-growing size of hard drives means the need to reduce file sizes when storing data has been reduced, but SDDs still cost significantly more per gigabyte than traditional spinning hard drives, so compressing files can still be very useful. Compression is also very helpful when you want to send several files via email and keep them within the attachment size limit, share them via a service like WeTransfer, or send them to a remote cloud server. That's not all – in addition to reducing file sizes, compression software offers plenty of extra features to take into consideration. Perhaps the best feature of compression tools is the ability to encrypt files and protect them with a password – something you'll find in all the tools we've picked here. The most commonly used compression format is ZIP, but there are various other available. You never know which type you may encounter when downloading and sharing files, so it makes sense to have a program on hand that can handle more than one type. Here we take a look at a selection of the best tools, taking into account ones that offer the highest compression rates, and those that support the largest number of file types.

It's been observed by PC Monitors and noticed when comparing Nvidia's G-Sync page today to that of November 2020, that Nvidia has quietly eased its requirements for a monitor to be classified as a G-Sync Ultimate monitor. During CES 2021 and during Nvidia's live stream, several new monitors were announced; ASUS PG32UQX, LG 34GP950G, and the MSI MEG381CQR. Of which two of those monitors listed are classified as VESA DisplayHDR 600 (600 maximum nits brightness) and received Nvidia's G-Sync Ultimate badge. This is quite a change from the original requirements for a monitor to be classified as a G-Sync Ultimate monitor. For any monitor to be classified as a G-Sync Ultimate monitor, it had to provide the following benefits; 1000 nits brightness (DisplayHDR 1000) highest resolution highest Hz Ultra-low latency Multi-zone backlight Wide color gamut Advanced NVIDIA G-Sync processor With the newly announced monitors from CES 2021 now being touted as G-Sync Ultimate monitors, It's clear that there was a change that Nvidia had failed to mention. This has caused some confusion and prompted PC Monitors to tweet out to Nvidia regarding the change. Would be helpful if @nvidia could clarify what 'G-SYNC Ultimate' actually means. It used to be VESA DisplayHDR 1000 with FALD. Then applied to some VESA DisplayHDR 600 models. And now you've certified some VESA DisplayHDR 400 models as 'G-SYNC Ultimate'? https://t.co/4DTcv3ikkXJanuary 17, 2021 And while Nvidia didn't mention the change, it was rolled into the press release that followed Nvidia's CES 2021 event. Along with the new announcements was the updated revision for its G-Sync Ultimate classification. Gone is the DisplayHDR 1000 requirement, and now replaced with the following; Nvidia also updated its website, which highlights the change. It no longer mentions "1000 nits" as a benefit, replaced by "Lifelike HDR." That said, it is much easier to argue that something looks lifelike, instead of saying this monitor does provide you with a specific tier of performance. You can see the change in the image below. Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate Classification Change (Image credit: Tomshardware) Currently, Nvidia hasn't stated why the change was made, so we don't officially know. However, it could simply come down to pricing. It's no secret that the prior G-Sync Ultimate monitors were expensive and that's due to the DisplayHDR level. With Nvidia changing up its requirement, this could open the door for cheaper monitors to bear the G-Sync Ultimate classification. But at the same time, this will also add some fragmentation into the mix as the classification could be applied to monitors from DisplayHDR 400 and up.

Concerns are resurfacing regarding how much data Microsoft Teams collects during video calls. Potentially, the volume of information collected presents a privacy infringement for individual users and could be used for employer snooping given the amount of remote work that is currently taking place. As the coronavirus pandemic has forced more employees to work remotely, they have often used digital collaboration tools like Teams to remain productive. This has drawn increased scrutiny regarding the types of data that these tools collect. The latest research indicates that the Teams Activity Report can be used by businesses to read a breakdown of usage for each individual user. This includes each person's chats, voicemails, files, privacy settings, and even a person’s time stamps. We've assembled a list of the best video conferencing software available We've ranked the best collaboration tools around And here's our list of the best business webcams on the market Privacy versus productivity Microsoft would no doubt argue that the data it collects is extremely useful for adding new features to the Teams platform, which it has done frequently of late, and for enabling businesses to boost their productivity. Given that many employees are not currently in a position to choose if they use Teams or not, however, it does seem as though they are essentially being forced to hand over their data. What’s more, given that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently spoke of his desire to expand Teams significantly, turning it into a “digital platform as significant as the internet browser,” it’s likely that Teams may soon be able to capture even more data from its users. Back in October last year, Microsoft announced a new 365 Productivity Score feature to help business speed up their digital transformation projects but which was heavily criticized for operating as an employee surveillance tool. Microsoft responded by anonymizing the data it collected so it could not be used to spy on employees but the data is still being collected nonetheless. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will make a similar backtrack regarding its Teams data collection policies.
