  5. Life with a Skoda Superb plug-in hybrid: Month 4 Experimenting with drive modes - 5 August 2020 A family trip in the Superb was our first mass outing since lockdown. While I drove, both passengers fell fast asleep and stayed that way even over rough roads. I put that down to the pillowy ride when the DCC suspension is in Comfort mode, although the plush seats help, too. Between the cushy ride and the car’s refinement in EV mode, the Superb feels like a cut-price Rolls-Royce. Mileage: 8020 Back to the top An iV infusion would help improve our plug-in’s vital signs - 15 July 2020 The disadvantages of not having my own home charger are quickly becoming apparent, I’m afraid. Although I’ve been running this new plug-in hybrid Superb for a few weeks now, my current total of attempted plug-ins stands at just one. I say ‘attempted’ for good reason, too: as soon as I’d hooked the Skoda up to the Ecotricity motorway charge point I’d located on my way back from a day-long photoshoot, I discovered it wasn’t actually working. Admittedly, this discovery didn’t come as much of a surprise, given the network’s known issues with reliability. And because I knew I could simply roll away again on petrol power alone, my encounter with the broken charger wasn’t the disaster it might have been had I rocked up in a pure EV. But even so, the fact that I’ve only really been able to reliably charge the Superb’s battery using energy drawn from its 1.4-litre four-pot engine while sitting on the motorway isn’t ideal. For those owners with the luxury of dedicated off-street parking, the whole charging issue probably won’t even register. Chances are they’ll be able to install a home wallbox pretty easily, and they’ll be able to do so with a bit of government cash, too. But for those of us forced to park on already crowded residential streets without reliable charge-point access? Well, it seems that electrified vehicles maybe aren’t 100% suitable for us just yet. If battery power is indeed the future, it appears charging infrastructure still has a way to go. Hopefully my borough council will install a few of those lamp-post chargers on my North London street in the next few months. Aside from my (largely self-inflicted) charging grumbles, life with the Superb iV has been pretty great really. To my eyes, its saloon bodyshape is much sleeker than the comparatively boxy estates that I was running about in previously, and I think it looks particularly fetching in grey. It’s understated without being boring and smart without looking too ostentatious or flashy. In short, it’s a tastefully attractive car – which is never a bad thing. It drives well, too. With Skoda’s Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive dampers fitted as an option, its ride is about as plush and comfortable as it gets at this price point. Combined with an electrified powertrain that, while not exactly exciting, is cleverly integrated and capable of delivering impressively instantaneous torque, wafting about in the Superb iV could never be deemed a taxing experience. I can’t see myself ever feeling compelled to get up at the crack of dawn to take it for a thrash on the mountain roads of South Wales. But on the flipside, if it’s still in my possession when lockdown eases a bit further and we’re once again able to head out that way for photoshoots, it will definitely make those 4am wake-up calls a bit easier to bear.

  7. A health worker screens people for Covid-19 symptoms at Dharavi, one of Asia's biggest slums, in Mumbai, India. (AP Photo/Rafiq Maqbool) (CNN)Last month, researchers in one of India's largest cities made a surprising discovery. Of the nearly 7,000 blood samples taken from people in Mumbai's slums, 57% tested positive for coronavirus antibodies. While some were alarmed by the results of the study conducted by the Mumbai authorities and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, others were optimistic. Mumbai's slums, where social distancing is nearly impossible, might now have some of the highest levels of immunity in the world -- only 23.5% of samples taken by India's National Center for Disease Control tested positive for antibodies in Delhi and 14% tested positive in New York, in a study sponsored by the New York State Department of Health. A health worker screens people for Covid-19 symptoms at Dharavi, one of Asia's biggest slums, in Mumbai, India. Scientists believe it's likely that recovering from coronavirus leaves a person with some immunity, but it's not clear how strong it is or how long it lasts. Herd immunity is the idea that a disease will stop spreading once enough of a po[CENSORED]tion becomes immune -- and is appealing because, in theory, it might provide some protection for those who haven't been ill. If more than half of people in Mumbai's slums had contracted coronavirus, could they be approaching herd immunity -- without a vaccine? One expert thought so. "Mumbai's slums may have reached herd immunity," Jayaprakash Muliyil, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of India's National Institute of Epidemiology, said, according to a Bloomberg report. "If people in Mumbai want a safe place to avoid infection, they should probably go there." But others have been more cautious. David Dowdy, an associate professor in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said it was possible that the researchers had used a test that created false positives. And Om Shrivastav, an infectious diseases expert in Mumbai, cautioned that, less than eight months into the virus' existence in society, it was too early to make any "decisive, conclusive statements." If Mumbai's slums are on the brink of herd immunity, it has come at a cost. Of India's more than 2 million coronavirus cases, about 5% of those infections were reported in Mumbai, the country's commercial capital. As of Monday, more than 6,940 people had died in the city, according to the city's health authorities. The risk of a high death toll is exactly why India's health authorities say the country is not aiming for herd immunity. "Herd immunity can be achieved through immunization -- but that is in future," health official Rajesh Bhushan told reporters last month.
  8. Hyundai has announced that the 2021 Hyundai Elantra is getting a turbocharged N-Line model, and it comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. It's powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Elantra N-Line will arrive in dealers in December starting at around $27,000. The angularly redesigned 2021 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan is getting a turbocharged, more aggressive-looking N-Line model, and we're rejoicing because it comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission (#SavetheManuals). Hyundai is hoping that offering an N-branded version of its entry-level sedan will entice more buyers into its high-performance N models. Don't get us wrong, the new Elantra's already wild exterior styling looks fantastic, but the added N-Line touches make it look just the right amount of aggressive. The N-Line models come with a more intense black grille pattern with N-Line badging, and below it are larger air intakes to cool the turbocharged engine. It sits on a set of sharp 18-inch wheels with gloss-black surrounds on the wheel wells, mirrors, and side skirts. The sporty look flows into the rear with an integrated spoiler, a dual exhaust, and an N-Line-specific rear diffuser. The standard Elantra is powered by a 147-hp naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four, and there's also a hybrid model coming that promises 50 mpg combined. The N-Line uses a more powerful turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that's good for 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, though a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic unit with paddle shifters is available. The N-Line also comes with N sport seats, alloy pedals, and other special touches. It will arrive in the U.S. in December starting at around $27,000. Hyundai says that its Sonata N-Line with a turbo 2.5-liter engine will arrive shortly after.
