Italian coachbuilder Automobili Amos has revealed an off-road version of its Lancia Delta-based Futurista restomod. Called the Delta Safarista and based on an Integrale 16V donor car, this rally-ready recreation features an entirely new body, with the two rear doors removed and radically extended fender flares taking their place. Safari-style bumpers mark it out obviously from the Futurista, while a small spoiler on top provides downforce. In keeping with its Group B rally-inspired billing, it also features mudflaps and under-body bashplates. Like the Futurista, the Safarista uses a large amount of carbonfibre. The road-going car weighs just 1250kg, and it’s likely that this one is significantly lighter. Amos says the Safarista has been designed with a philosophy of “functionality and durability over aesthetics”, which is a theme that carries over to the interior. All the mod-cons of the original Delta Integrale have been stripped out to save weight, leaving only two seats, a roll cage, a hydraulic handbrake and a racing-style display mounted to the exposed steering column. Technical details haven’t been released, but Amos has confirmed that the Safarista will use a “fully upgraded” engine built by Autotecnica Motori, the Italian specialist that builds the 330bhp engines for the Futurista. A motorsport-style sequential gearbox is used, while the car rides on adjustable suspension also “derived from motorsport”. Steel brake discs provide stopping power. The Safarista will be built by Podium Advanced Technolgies, which builds the Futurista and Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus's endurance-racing cars. Amos aims to use its cars to create a “community of like-minded people who can share the sense of adventure around the world, creating memories that will last a lifetime”. Purchasing a Safarista will allow the buyer to become part of the Safarista programme, which will offer the opportunity to “safely reach their limits and those of their car, surrounded by incredible nature contexts from Sweden ice-ring to the dunes of Arabia”. Just 10 examples will be produced, with a price tag of €570,000 (£485,000) before taxes. Deliveries are due to begin in 2023. A Belarusian opposition leader who rallied mass protests against disputed leader Alexander Lukashenko has been jailed for 18 years. Sergei Tikhanovsky was convicted of organising riots among other charges following a trial condemned as a sham. He planned to challenge Mr Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election, but was detained before the vote. His wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, took on Mr Lukashenko, who claimed victory in the widely discredited poll. She claimed victory herself in the August election but, fearing for her safety, was forced into exile with her children the next day. On Tuesday, Ms Tikhanovskaya questioned the validity of the court that tried her husband and told the BBC his sentence amounted to "personal revenge" by Mr Lukashenko. "While hiding the political prisoners in closed trials, he hopes to continue repressions in silence. But the whole world watches. We won't stop," Ms Tikhanovskaya wrote in a tweet. Ahead of the verdict, she said she would keep "defending the person I love" in a Twitter video, which showed children's drawings in the background. The 39-year-old is a former teacher who was a stay-at-home mother until she entered the political fray in Belarus and became a pro-democracy icon. She now lives in exile in Lithuania. Belarusian state news agency Belta said the verdict was delivered at a court in the south-eastern city of Gomel on Tuesday. A po[CENSORED]r YouTube blogger, Tikhanovsky, 43, was convicted of organising mass unrest, inciting hatred and other charges following a months-long trial behind closed doors. State newspaper Sovetskaya Belarus said five other opposition figures tried alongside Tikhanovsky were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 14 to 16 years. Among them was veteran opposition politician Mikola Statkevich, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Opposition crushed They are the latest opposition figures to be jailed in Belarus following a brutal crackdown on dissenting voices who challenged Alexander Lukashenko's election win. All of his prominent opponents have either been jailed or forced to flee the country. Mr Lukashenko has ruled Belarus since 1994 but his re-election as president last year was deemed illegitimate and not recognised by Western countries. He defied months of protests last year as opposition politicians and activists were arrested and held in prison, where some were allegedly beaten and tortured. Tikhanovsky is now one of hundreds of political prisoners thought to be held in Belarusian jails. Among them is protest organiser Maria Kolesnikova, who was found guilty of crimes including plotting to seize power and jailed for 11 years in September. Another opposition leader and former banker, Viktor Babaryko, was sentenced to 14 years in prison on fraud charges in July. In an interview in Minsk last month, the BBC's Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg asked Mr Lukashenko how many political prisoners were jailed in Belarus. "We have no political crimes in law," Mr Lukashenko said. "We have no crimes that we've prosecuted under. These are people who have broken Belarusian law." Without providing evidence, he suggested Ms Kolesnikova was an "agent" of the West and said she had been jailed because she "broke the law". The crackdown severely strained relations between Belarus and the EU, which has imposed tough sanctions the country. The EU has since accused Belarus of orchestrating a migrant crisis on its eastern borders in revenge for sanctions. Link : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59650238

Hours after Meta (nee Facebook) finally opened Horizons World, its first baby step into the Metaverse, to virtually everyone with a Facebook account and compatible Oculus headset, I found myself talking to a floating community manager about how to switch from teleporting to the more naturalistic gliding around. It wasn’t that easy to enter the first blush of what’s supposed to become a rich, multiverse, digital environment where we can work, play, hang out, and build our own new worlds. It took a key Oculus Quest system upgrade and then not one, but two Horizon Worlds updates, one of which changed key interface elements I’d learned only hours before. Before you get too excited about Meta’s Metaverse potential, understand that Horizon Worlds is very much Alpha software and, if you don’t have the newest hardware, you might not be able to enter it at all. My Oculus Quest version 1 virtual reality headset is set to end Horizon support in January. It’s unclear to me if that means I’ll lose the software on my headset, as well as access to this somewhat janky world. While some parts of Horizons World are impressive, like the way the remote visualization disappears for animated hands (though I wish I could just use my hands, which is supported in some Quest apps) and how sound is spatial and localized, most of the environment feels small and sparsely po[CENSORED]ted. Welcome to a new world After running through the major system update that radically changed my Oculus Quest home interface—for the better, I might say—, and the updates for Horizon, I launched the app and was inside Horizon Worlds where, thanks to my Quest being tied to my Facebook account, I was immediately identified by my full name. Between that and the system defaulting to projecting my voice inside Horizon Worlds, I felt exposed but tried to move on and follow some of the guidance tips. There was also a prompt—one of many that appeared floating way too close to my face—to create a new avatar. I was warned that even though I could choose a full outfit, not all experiences would support legs (hence the legless, floating avatars). I had ample choices for hairstyle, facial features, skin tone, and clothing. Still, they weren’t detailed enough to make something that looked much like me. I either need more control or more time. In any case, I set off into Horizon Worlds with a digital me that looked a bit like Moby. Another prompt showed me that if I turned over my left hand, a little menu would appear on my virtual wrist. I use it to navigate among three primary environments Play, Attend, and Hangout. All loaded slowly, asking me to wait as the system was “Painting scene” and “Preparing for visitors.” None of these experiences is transformative. I started by entering the rather primitive-looking Play area where I quickly found a game called Action Island Teams. In it, a bunch of legless users picked up guns (single shot and machine), shot each other and team-style, tried to capture the flag. I could hear player chatter all around me and, apparently, they could hear me as well. One guy complained that his avatar looked messed up and other players who examined him quickly agreed. At this point, I was still identifying a spot in front of me and then teleporting to it. Others appeared to be moving about more smoothly, and I was quickly shot dead on sight over and over again. Reloading brought me back into the game. A second game involved Minecraft-looking zombies emerging from a defunct mall’s shuttered stores and corridors. You had to shoot them before they ate you to gain enough coins to buy new weapons. It was just me and, I could tell from the voice, one frustrated kid playing. I soon left. These games I was trying were apparently built by users, which accounts for the incredibly rough looks and rudimentary features. "Attend" is just a series of events I could go to later today and in the coming days as long as I RSVPed. Most of them were about learning the ropes of Horizon Worlds. Finally, I ended up in Hangout’s The Plaza (currently the only hangout). Immediately I noticed far better graphics, more people (I think everyone eventually ends up there), and a handful of pleasant activities. As soon as I arrived and started teleporting from spot to spot, a Community Guide (there were around half a dozen standing in the space waiting to greet visitors like me) noticed how I moved. “You're still teleporting, let me show you how to glide,” he said helpfully. Then he sidled up next to me and walked me through opening my setup menu, which had moved between yesterday and today in that update and showed me how to change my movement style and how to make sure the screen view didn’t narrow while I moved. He also showed me how to jump by pressing down the right joystick on my Oculus controller. I wanted to get to the top of a building. He said I didn’t need to take the stairs and that if I walked through a dark archway in front of me, I’d be instantly transported. On the rooftop, I found some paper airplanes. The guide, who appeared beside me said they were just for fun, and I could throw them wherever I wanted. It was a good way to get used to the mechanics of Horizon Worlds. Later, I threw and caught a boomerang, while trying to hit a floating target, to get even more practice. There were more guides than Facebook newbie visitors, but when we did see each other, we’d wave our hands nervously (which was really us waving our controllers) and, because we could hear each other, say hello. I walked upstairs to an auditorium, but nothing was going on there. Then I wandered around exploring but soon found that the space was pretty small. I overheard someone saying that a portion of it that was here today, hadn’t been there yesterday. So, I guess Facebook/Meta is constantly building and changing. Later when I logged back in I found the space decorated for the holidays. There was direct access to new worlds people were building, and a tree we all kept climbing, trying—and mostly failing—to reach the top and then jump to nearby clouds.

Alder Lake's arrival heralded the opening salvo of Intel's brutal price war on AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips, and the Core i7-12700K is the perfect example of Intel's new bare-knuckle approach to pricing. At $409, the 12700K thoroughly beats the $390 Ryzen 7 5800X and even unseats the pricey $550 Ryzen 9 5900X, all while delivering essentially the same gaming performance as the fastest gaming chip on the planet, Intel's own $589 flagship Core i9-12900K — but for $180 less. Alder Lake also provides the biggest gains in overclocking performance that we've seen in the last several chip generations. As a result, the Core i7-12700K joins our list of the best CPUs for gaming. It's also exceedingly competitive in applications, assuring a top ranking in our CPU Benchmark hierarchy. The 12700K comes on the heels of Intel's other surprising victories against much pricier chips, like the $589 Core i9-12900K vs $799 Ryzen 9 5950X and the $289 Core i5-12600K vs $390 Ryzen 7 5800X (click the links for the full rundown), proving that Alder Lake truly punches above its pricing weight class. Surprisingly, the majority of these gains come even without the advantages of Alder Lake's new next-gen connectivity technologies that bring big increases in throughput via DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 interfaces. You can use standard DDR4 memory and PCIe devices to unlock superior performance over AMD's aging AM4 platform, but DDR5 will give you an extra performance kicker in some applications. Intel's platform is also prepared for the inevitable transition to PCIe 5.0, but that brings higher motherboard pricing. That reduces (but doesn't eliminate) Intel's chip pricing advantage, at least until B- and H-series boards arrive in the coming months. Intel is the first to support DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 on the desktop, and the company combines that tech with another first for desktop PCs — Alder's new hybrid x86 design represents the company's most disruptive architectural shift in a decade. Alder Lake combines big and fast Performance cores (P-cores) with clusters of small and powerful Efficiency cores (E-cores) that chew through background processes. The Golden Cove architecture powers the 'big' P-cores while the 'little' E-cores come with the Gracemont architecture, with both providing much-needed IPC improvements to Intel's core designs. The 'Intel 7' process debuts with Alder Lake, finally ending Intel's misery on the 14nm node after six long years that ultimately cost the company its performance crown to AMD. We previously knew this 'Intel 7' manufacturing tech as 10nm Enhanced SuperFin, but Intel recently renamed its process nodes to match industry nomenclature. Technically, this is the second generation of Intel's 10nm process, but it's a first for desktop PCs. For now, Alder Lake consists of three high-end overclockable K-series models, along with their graphics-less KF counterparts that are slightly less expensive, with more models to come in the future. The P-cores are hyper-threaded, while the E-cores only have a single thread, leading to what we would normally consider as non-standard thread counts. The Core i7-12700K comes with eight P-cores and 4 E-cores, for a total of 20 threads, slotting in between the 16-core 24-thread Core i9-12900K and the 10-core 16-thread Core i5-12600K. There is a catch, though. Alder Lake's new heterogeneous design requires special accommodations to unlock the best performance: Performance-sensitive work executes best on the P-cores, while the E-cores are best for background and threaded workloads, but ensuring that the right workloads land on the correct cores requires operating system intervention. The Alder Lake chips work with both newer and older versions of Windows, but Windows 11 unlocks the best performance because it supports Intel's new Thread Director. The tech provides the operating system with information that assists in assigning work to the correct cores. Alder Lake's performance is still competitive in Windows 10, but you might encounter wayward performance and/or variability, meaning some workloads will be slower at times due to unoptimized thread scheduling. However, you can rectify those issues in Windows 10 with various utilities, like the always-po[CENSORED]r Process Lasso. Conversely, Alder Lake is incredibly impressive in Windows 11 and takes the lead over AMD in gaming and most workloads, and by large margins. In other words, for worry-free class-leading performance, go with Windows 11 and Alder Lake. You'll get similarly impressive performance with Windows 10, but it will require a bit more manual intervention in a few applications. Intel's previous-gen Rocket Lake chips came with the same number of cores for both the Core i7 and i9 models, leaving little difference between the two models. However, the Core i7 12700K has four fewer E-cores than the Core i9-12900K and a 200 MHz lower boost clock, marking the return of meaningful segmentation between the Core i7 and i9 lineups. That segmentation is apparent in lightly- and heavily-threaded productivity applications, with the 12900K earning its higher price tag in those areas. But as you'll see in our benchmarks below, the 12700K offers essentially the same performance in gaming, making it the new high-end champion for performance addicts, while the Core i5-12600K remains the best mid-range CPU for gaming. Speaking of the performance-obsessed, we've also included in-depth overclocking testing, which unearthed the biggest gains we've seen from recent Intel chips — we certainly haven't seen double-digit percentage increases in gaming performance from overclocking in several chip generations. Intel Core i7-12700k at Amazon for $419.99 Intel Alder Lake-S Core i7-12700K Specifications and Pricing Advertisement Intel is only bringing its most expensive chips from the Core i9, i7, and i5 families to the retail market for now, but it is also shipping 28 more models to OEMs for prebuilt systems that arrive early next year. Intel isn't sharing details yet, but those models will eventually come to retail at an unspecified time. We have deep-dive coverage of the Alder Lake SoC design and core microarchitectures here, along with a broader overview in our Alder Lake all we know article. Additionally, Intel has removed its 'TDP' (Thermal Design Point) nomenclature from the spec sheets, and now assigns a Processor Base Power (PBP) value in its place. The company also added a secondary Maximum Turbo Power (MTP) value to the spec sheets to represent the highest power level during boost activity.

Eighty years span several lifetimes in car terms, so it’s little surprise that in mechanical terms there’s really little in common between the Willys MB – the first vehicle we now recognise as a Jeep – and the latest Wrangler. They’re different machines from different eras, built by different companies for very different purposes. There is, however, an undeniable link between the two. It’s the shared guiding ethos that both are designed to offer: freedom. A very American sort of freedom at that, the sort best served with fireworks, cheerleaders, chants of ‘U-S-A! U-S-A!’ and a side of cheese-smothered freedom fries. The past 18 months or so have given us all a new appreciation of freedom and the ability to go where we want when we want. I reflect on that from behind the thin steering wheel of the MB. This is the first jeep, from a time when that moniker was a nickname rather than a brand with a capital ‘J’. It’s a vehicle designed to go anywhere, and by modern standards it’s startlingly minimalist: the dashboard is stripped to its essentials, there’s no roof or seatbelts and a haggard fabric strap merely hints at side protection without offering any. Still, once you’ve mastered the vagaries of starting it (heel on brake, toe pushing accelerator, stretch under the dash for the ignition button) and received a thorough workout wrestling for gears using the long-throw stick, it’s easy to see why the MB was a seminal vehicle for military use – and why it was so quickly embraced by civilians. This is stripped-back, raw freedom in motoring form. At speed, the MB is disarmingly easy and fun to drive, enjoyably open to the elements and still feeling as rugged and indestructible as it did 80 years ago. You feel it could still tackle the roughest of off-road tracks without breaking a sweat. It’s that sense of go-anywhere motoring freedom that millions of buyers of this vehicle’s descendants have enjoyed and why the Jeep’s natural home is in the wilds of the American west, traversing the rocky Rubicon Trail or the rubble-strewn, sun-baked tracks around Moab. Then I turn a corner at speed and, instead of a faceful of desert sand, I’m hit with the full force of a chilly Cambridgeshire wind and a faceful of sodden, decaying leaves. Our freedoms may be returning, but the restrictions and complications of travel mean celebrating Jeep’s 80th birthday in the UK, not Utah. Still, the Imperial War Museum Duxford is a fitting venue, because the creation of the MB in 1940 was rooted in a very literal fight for freedom. In July of that year, with World War II escalating, officials recognised a need for a new light reconnaissance vehicle to replace its ageing fleet of converted Ford Model Ts. The War Department drew up a list of requirements and invited 135 manufacturers to tender for production. Two responded. Those bids came from the American Bantam Car Co and Ohiobased Willys-Overland. Bantam was the quickest to respond, with a prototype beginning tests a staggering 49 days after the tender was received. But with doubts over Bantam’s ability to meet the production run, the War Department invited WillysOverland and Ford to bid on the contract and gave them access to the Bantam design to speed up the process. The Army then subjected the three designs to a triple test that probably matched Autocar’s equivalent in its thoroughness. The Willys-Overland Quad was the most powerful, thanks to its 60hp Go Devil four-cylinder engine, the Bantam was the most fuel efficient and the Ford Pygmy was better constructed and had superior design details. The Army continued to revise the specifications – the original maximum vehicle weight of 1300lb was deemed too low, for example – and eventually awarded the first build contract to Willys-Overland. Ford later gained a contract to help meet production demand. For its efforts, Bantam was granted a contract to build trailers. US President Joe Biden has said the government will do everything it possibly can to help central areas of the country devastated by tornadoes. Mr Biden has signed a Federal Emergency Disaster Declaration, releasing funds for Kentucky, the worst affected state. He said the storms were among the largest in US history. More than 70 people died in Kentucky in Friday night's storms, including dozens in a candle factory, and the death toll is expected to rise above 100. Emergency teams are searching through the rubble of the factory, in the town of Mayfield, which was hit directly. More than 40 people have been rescued out of some 110 in the factory but Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said it would be a miracle if anyone else was found alive. The conditions facing the authorities are hugely challenging, with the police station in Mayfield destroyed and firefighters' equipment damaged. Tens of thousands of people in the state are also without power and water. At least 12 people died as tornadoes wreaked havoc in other states, including six in an Amazon warehouse in Illinois. Mr Biden said he was praying for those who had lost, or who were uncertain about, their loved ones. "The federal government will do everything it can possibly do to help," he said. "We're going to get through this together." The president said teams from the emergency agency Fema would go to Kentucky on Sunday to offer additional resources including help with temporary housing for those whose homes had been destroyed or badly damaged. Emergency funds were also available for the other affected states - Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee and Mississippi - if they needed it, he said. Governor Beshear has declared a state of emergency in Kentucky. He said Mayfield and everywhere along the 227-mile (365-km) path of the tornado - almost all in Kentucky - were devastated. "It's indescribable, unlike anything I've ever seen," he said. "You see parts of industrial buildings, roofs, or sightings in trees, if trees are lucky enough to stand. "Huge metal poles bent in half if not broken, buildings that are no longer there, huge trucks that have been picked up and thrown. And sadly far too many homes that people were likely in, entirely devastated." "There are a lot of families that need your prayers," he added. Deaths had been reported in several counties, but the loss of life in the Mayfield factory could exceed that of any tornado event in a single location in state history, the governor added. Mr Beshear said it was a "very dire situation" at the factory, with the difficulties of searching through the collapsed building compounded by drums leaking corrosive liquid. Other incidents in Kentucky included a train derailment during extreme winds in Hopkins County. Local officials also described how two children were reported missing during a tornado but were then found in a bathtub that had been pulled outside by the force of the wind. line Destruction everywhere By Nomia Iqbal, BBC News, Bowling Green, Kentucky The destruction is extraordinary to see. The strong line of storms tore through a neighbourhood in Bowling Green in southern Kentucky Dozens of homes are severely damaged or completely destroyed. Power lines hang loosely on the roads and whole trees have been uprooted. Toys, books, clothing are scattered across peoples' lawns. In one home, half of the roof collapsed into the garage, burying the owner's car. A man approaches the battered front door with his children and peers inside. His 97-year-old aunt lives inside, he says, and he cannot get hold of her. "We're worried. She doesn't have a cell phone or anything," he says. "God, I'm hoping she got out safe". A few minutes later after speaking to a relative on the phone, relief spreads across his face. "She was in the bath tub but got out safely. She's fine. She's fine." Learn more Home News Fitness Casio's latest slick G-Shock watches track your runs without the fuss of a Garmin By Cat Ellis last updated about 2 hours ago The G-Squad GBD-200SM is priced at £139 (about $180 / AU$260), while the G-Squad GBA-900 is $119 (about $160 / AU$220). For context, the entry-level Garmin Forerunner 55 is priced at $199.99 / £179.99 / AU$329, and the Polar Unite is £134.50 / $149.95 / AU$249. Together with the simple monochrome LCD display, the lack of on-board GPS also contributes to each watch's super-long battery life. The battery isn't rechargeable, but can keep running for up to two years before it needs replacing. The watches connect to the G-Shock Move app, which allows you to check distance and time, set goals such as steps and run distance, and create a training plan. It's worth knowing, however, that when it comes to sports, these watches are built purely for running. You won't find tracking modes for elliptical training and yoga here – just the essentials for when you're hitting the pavement. Opinion: Sometimes simpler is better A fully fledged running watch from the likes of Garmin, Coros, or Polar will give you a huge range of training tools that will help you optimize your performance and shave precious seconds off your times. However, that style of running and intense training isn't for everyone – and that's where the Vital Energy series comes in, Unlike similarly priced wearables from other big names in sports tech, the Vital Energy watches are designed for runners who aren't embarking on intense training programs that demand strategic fuelling and hydration, and aren't aiming to shave seconds off their race times. Instead, they do the basics, with the G-Shock Move app letting you keep an eye on your progress in a general way. They don't overwhelm you with details if you simply want to run for the pleasure of it, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.

The new Nissan Ariya electric SUV features bold styling, a range of up to 310 miles and a 389bhp performance variant – and Nissan claims it will “mark a new era for electric vehicles” by combining high levels of tech with “exciting” handling. Pre-orders for the Volkswagen ID 4 rival are now open, ahead of first deliveries beginning in summer, with prices starting from £41,845 for the entry-level Advance car, with front-wheel drive and a 63kWh battery. That car is capable of a claimed 223 miles on the WLTP cycle, while its 215bhp motor sends it from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds. The larger 87kWh battery is available from £51,090 with a more potent 240bhp 2WD powertrain – for a range of 310 miles – or £53,790 with the e-4orce four-wheel-drive powertrain, which can be had with either 302bhp or, in range-topping, £58,440 e-4orce Performance guise, 389bhp. The e-4orce Performance model can cover 0-62mph in a claimed 5.1sec and, like the other e-4orce models, has a top speed of 124mph (25mph more than the single-motor cars). The production-ready Ariya retains the bold styling of the concept unveiled at last year’s Tokyo motor show and showcases Nissan’s new brand identity with “seamless, elegant and fresh” styling. It shares the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s new CMF-EV electric architecture with the smaller Renault Mégane E-tech Electric, and Nissan operating chief Ashwani Gupta said it represents the start of “a new chapter for Nissan”. He said the firm has “strived to amplify the fun-to-drive aspect of electric mobility,” adding: “It’s not just a great EV crossover, but also a great vehicle – a true force of wonder that will take us into the future.” Nissan’s new e-4orce four-wheel drive system is referred to as the “spiritual offspring” of the system used in the GT-R supercar. It employs a regenerative rear-motor braking system to minimise vehicle pitch and smooth the ride. The Ariya gets Standard, Sport and Eco driving modes, with e-4orce variants adding a Snow mode. Nissan claims the underfloor battery has been positioned to ensure 50:50 front/rear weight distribution, with flat underbody aerodynamics to boost stability. It also uses the Leaf’s e-Pedal regeneration system, allowing one-pedal driving. Makoto Fukuda, the Ariya’s development chief, said the focus wasn’t just on achieving rapid acceleration but also on providing “maximum, usable performance in a wide range of driving conditions”. At least 54 people have been killed and scores more injured after the truck they were being transported in crashed in southern Mexico, authorities say. More than 150 people, said to be migrants from Central America, were crammed into the truck's trailer when it rolled in the state of Chiapas. One resident heard a man implore his badly hurt companion: "Remember what you promised your mother! Hold on." Pictures show victims strewn across the road next to the overturned truck. Sabina Lopez, who lives nearby and ran to the scene after the crash, told the AFP news agency that she saw dozens of people screaming in pain, some trapped in the wreckage and others unconscious. "It was horrible to hear the wailing. I just thought about helping," Ms Lopez, 18, told AFP. She said the impact of the crash had broken the container in half and ripped off its roof. Isaias Diaz arrived 15 minutes after the crash and helped paramedics with those people showing signs of life. "I saw five, six children who were clearly injured. People with broken legs, ribs, [injured] heads, cuts on their necks," he told AFP. "The crying, the pain, the despair. It was a terrible scene," he added. Residents offered crash survivors water and mobile phones to contact relatives. They also said the driver and a person with him appeared injured, but then fled. Mexico country profile It is one of the worst accidents of its kind in Mexico. Forty-nine people were confirmed dead at the scene and five more died in hospital, Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandón said. Some 105 people - 83 men and 22 women - were also injured in the crash, he said. Emergency officials said the victims included men, women and children. Their nationalities have not been confirmed, but local officials said most of the people on board were from Honduras and Guatemala. The truck was reportedly speeding when it flipped on a sharp bend and hit a pedestrian bridge on a main road leading to the Chiapas state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Chiapas, which neighbours Guatemala, is a major transit point for undocumented migrants. Hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America try to cross through Mexico each year in a bid to reach the US. Many of them pay smugglers, who illegally transport them in crowded and dangerous trucks on the long journey. The US-Mexico border is the deadliest single crossing in the world according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This year alone, at least 650 people have died trying to cross the border - more than in any other year since IOM's records began. There are also many deaths on the perilous journey towards the border, however these are harder to accurately document, the IOM said in a statement. Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the crash as "very painful" and wrote on Twitter that he "deeply regrets the tragedy". Last month, a migrant caravan heading through Chiapas found that the local authorities had clamped down so hard on people providing lifts to migrants, they effectively had to undertake the entire journey on foot. That meant carrying their children in their arms in the blistering heat and torrential downpours of southern Mexico's rural states. It's a tactic employed by the government to try to break the migrants' will, to see if any will give up and turn back or accept asylum conditions in Mexico. Throughout it all, trucks have continued to transport thousands of migrants right under the noses - or with the complicity - of the state authorities. Their trailers filled with scores of families standing in cramped and unsafe conditions for hours, it's a wonder such incidents aren't more frequent. Often the biggest danger to the migrants is from suffocation as the people-smugglers fail to provide sufficient ventilation or hydration for the trip. Yet most of those in this horrific crash came from Central America and will have been escaping economic ruin, the effects of severe weather from climate change on their livelihoods or gang violence. Or some combination of all of these factors. With that in mind, many thousands more will continue to consider the dangers of the road to be a risk worth taking to flee the unbearable conditions at home. Over the last year Apple has treated us to new models of the iPad Pro, the iPad mini, and the entry-level 10.2-inch iPad, but it doesn't appear to be slowing down – updated versions of several Apple slates are rumored to be in the pipeline for 2022. This comes via the usually reliable Mark Gurman and his Power On newsletter at Bloomberg: updates for the iPad Pro, the iPad Air and the 10.2-inch iPad are all mentioned, with the iPad Pro apparently in line for a significant redesign. A refresh of the iPad Air would make sense, as we last saw a new model in that particular line in 2020, but it seems that Apple isn't going to wait more than a year to update the other tablets – it's only the iPad mini that doesn't get a mention in the 2022 plans. Going Pro Of the three iPad models Gurman is predicting we'll see an update for, we know most about the iPad Pro, which Apple currently sells in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. This is in line for some kind of redesign, which apparently includes support for wireless charging (which is something that pro-level users now expect). The iPad in all its various guises is responsible for almost a third of all the tablets sold worldwide, which puts Apple way ahead of everyone else when it comes to these devices – Samsung makes some fine tablets too, but it accounts for only one in five tablets sold. Despite this market lead, Apple isn't resting on its laurels, and for the most part is following the annual refresh approach that it uses for the iPhone to keep its tablets fresh and relevant. While the year-on-year upgrades might not be huge, they mean that you're never going to come across an outdated iPad. That's not to say everything is perfect when it comes to the Apple iPad line. The po[CENSORED]r iPad mini had to wait a while for its last update, while the use of USB-C on the iPad Pros and Lightning connectors on the other iPad models is a confusing annoyance that you don't normally get when it comes to Apple products. However, this latest rumor suggests that Apple's iPad strategy will remain an aggressive one – not only with the hardware, but also with the iPadOS software that Apple updates every year with new features and functionality.
