  5. Pros Small enough to fit in a garage Long- or short wheelbase (cargo only) Seating for 6 or 7 in the passenger model Standard active safety systems More efficient, less costly than standard vans Cons Towing capacity limited to 2,000 pounds Only 4-cylinder engines offered What’s New this Year? Lane-keeping assist now bundled with adaptive cruise control People Also Ask What is a 2021 Ford Transit Connect? The Transit Connect is Ford’s smaller cargo or passenger van. It is not to be confused with the full-size Transit. Does the 2021 Ford Transit Connect come in AWD? No. The Transit Connect does not have an all-wheel-drive option; it is front-wheel-drive (FWD) only. Ford’s full-size Transit does offer AWD, though. Where is the 2021 Ford Transit Connect made? The Ford Transit Connect is made in Spain. Driving the 2021 Ford Transit Connect When we say the Transit Connect is a refreshing change compared to standard minivans or big cargo haulers, that approval also applies to the way it drives. Rather than a lumbering van, the Transit Connect feels more like a small crossover SUV. It is relatively nimble, and its size makes it a cinch in the city. Whether you’re making deliveries all day or dread pulling into a parking space at a busy shopping center, you’ll appreciate the Transit Connect’s easy driving manners. Unless you’re a fleet buyer, the Transit Connect comes with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 162 horsepower. Yes, that pales against the nearly 300 horses you get in a Toyota Sienna, but there is less to move here. And this small Ford van makes the most of that power, transmitting it through a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. The driving experience in the Ford Transit Connect is simply better than in the Ram ProMaster City and Nissan NV200. Moreover, it’s also more modern. The Ford Transit Connect has active safety features that aren’t even available in the Ram and Nissan. It comes standard with forward-collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, and offers a full suite of active safety and driving aids like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Favorite Features ACTIVE SAFETY FEATURES All Transit Connect models include a collision warning system and automatic emergency braking, while other features like lane-keeping assist are available. Whether you’re carrying kids or just deliveries, it’s important to have this peace of mind. READY FOR ACTIVE LIFESTYLES The Transit Connect’s interior is adaptable to your needs and desires. Of course it makes a great cargo van, but we think it’s also an ideal choice for carrying surfboards, bicycles, and – thanks to its low load floor – dogs. 2021 Ford Transit Connect Interior The Ford Transit Connect is available in two distinct designs. As a cargo van, it has two front seats and a blank rear space ready to fit your needs. Short-wheelbase (SWB) models have 104.8 cubic feet of storage, while the long-wheelbase model expands that to 127.4 cubic feet. The Transit Connect passenger van, called a wagon, is now only available in long-wheelbase (LWB) form. It comes with three rows of seating. You have a choice of seating for six passengers if you opt for second-row captain’s chairs, or up to seven passengers if you get a bench in the second row. Interior material ranges from made-for-work vinyl seats in base cargo models to cloth or optional leather in passenger wagon models. At its most basic, XL models have a simple 4.2-inch infotainment screen. We recommend opting for the Sync3 infotainment system that bundles a 6.5-inch screen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. It’s standard on XLT trims and above or optional on XL models for $595. 2021 Ford Transit Connect Exterior We think the Ford Transit Connect looks quite dapper for a minivan. In our eyes, it is better proportioned than the first-gen model that arrived in the U.S. around a decade ago, and more stylish than its current Ram and Nissan rivals. But function takes priority form in vans, and here too the Transit Connect works very well. Its boxy body provides headroom galore, and more than ample space for people or cargo in back. The Transit Connect Cargo with the short 104.8-inch wheelbase is 174.2 inches long; the LWB model with the 120.6-inch wheelbase spans 190 inches. You can order your Transit Connect with split rear doors (which open 180 degrees and will accept a 48-inch pallet) or an upward-rising liftgate. The XLT Wagon gets body-color bumpers in place of black ones. 2021 Ford Transit Connect Standard Features The Ford Transit Connect is available in XL and XLT trims for cargo and passenger variants, while the passenger model can also be had in premium Titanium form. At its most basic, a Transit Connect XL cargo vans includes a 6-way manual adjust driver’s seat, vinyl seats, a 4.2-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and USB port, and a forward-collision warning system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Base XL passenger models come with cloth interior and cruise control, plus necessities like half a dozen cupholders. If your budget allows, we recommend stepping up to the 2021 Transit Connect XLT model. It includes blind-spot monitoring, a better infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, has heated exterior mirrors, and in passenger models has dual-zone climate control a 6-way power seat. 2021 Ford Transit Connect Options At the top of the Transit Connect lineup and available in passenger form only is the Titanium model. It brings leather upholstery, heated front seats, navigation, keyless entry with push-button start, power-folding side mirrors, and high-intensity headlights. Options vary by trim and include adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, panoramic glass roof, and parking sensors. Optional on the audio list is a CD player. 2021 Ford Transit Connect Engines The Ford Transit Connect is technically available with two engines, but one is reserved for fleet buyers. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 162 horsepower, while fleet buyers can opt for a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 169 horsepower. The 2.0-liter engine is tied to an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5-liter unit uses a 6-speed. That fleet-designated engine can also be factory prepped for running on compressed natural gas (CNG). All Transit Connect models are front-wheel drive. As with more modern vehicles, the Transit Connect employs an engine start/stop system that cuts power at idle. It can be disabled if you don’t like the engine turning off at stoplights. The Ford Transit Connect’s towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. 2.0-liter inline-4 162 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm 144 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A 2.5-liter inline-4 (fleet only) 169 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 171 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: N/A How Much Does the 2021 Ford Transit Connect Cost? In its least-expensive form as a short-wheelbase cargo van, the 2021 Transit Connect has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $24,655, plus a destination fee of $1,395. A long-wheelbase, higher-trim XLT cargo model starts just over $28,000. Transit Connect wagon passenger models start at $27,400 and span to $31,600 for a Titanium model. Compared with the starting price of other small passenger and cargo/delivery vans, the Transit Connect is in line with the Ram ProMaster City and nearly $2,000 more than Nissan’s NV200. The larger, rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Metris starts just over $27,000. Before buying, check the KBB.com Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. We expect the Transit Connect’s resale value to hold up reasonably well. Don't be because 2021 Ford Transit Connect has Safety Technology Pre-Collision Assist with automatic emergency braking All 2021 Ford Transit Connects have this safety system, which will sound a warning and then apply the brakes automatically if necessary when a forward collision with another vehicle (or a pedestrian) is deemed imminent. Blind-spot monitoring This system lets the driver know when there’s a vehicle in the Transit Connect’s Blind Spot, and it’s complemented by Rear Cross-Traffic alert, which greatly reduces the chances of getting hit by another car when backing out of a parking spot. It is standard beginning on XLT trims. Adaptive cruise control / lane-keeping assist Optional on XLT and Titanium models, this active driving aid paces the vehicle ahead and can help keep the Transit Connect from drifting lanes.
  6. A further 3.2 million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week as the economic toll from the coronavirus pandemic continued to mount. The new applications brought the total number of jobless claims since mid-March to 33.3 million- or about 20% of the US workforce. The number of new claims reported each week by the Department of Labor has subsided since hitting a peak of 6.9 million in March. But they remain extraordinarily high. And the number of people collecting benefits has continued to rise, despite recent moves to start re-opening in some parts of the country. "The significant rise in continuing claims ... is a little disappointing since it suggests few people are being recalled to work," said Paul Ashworth, chief US economist at Capital Economics. Companies such as Uber, Lyft and Airbnb are amongst the firms that have announced cuts in recent weeks, as shutdowns halted significant amounts of travel. The impact has been felt across the economy, affecting medical practices, restaurants and administrative workers among many others. Economists say the monthly unemployment rate for April, which will be released on Friday, is likely to reach 15% or higher. Just two months ago, the unemployment rate was at 3.5%, a 50-year low. Since the coronavirus has taken hold in the US, the country has suffered its worst growth numbers in a decade, the worst retail sales report on record and declines in business activity not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. Meanwhile, weeks of elevated unemployment claims have far surpassed the prior record of 700,000. Food pantries have seen spikes in demand, and homeowners and renters have delayed monthly payments. The National Multifamily Housing Council - an industry group for apartment owners - reported last month that nearly a third of renters did not make their full payment by the first of the month. "If nothing else changes and evictions continue as normal, this public health crisis will turn into a full blown homelessness crisis," said Matthew Desmond, a sociology professor at Princeton University who runs the Eviction Lab project. Economists are hoping the pain will ease as businesses gradually restart. Retailers such as Gap have already announced plans for re-opening some stores. Others, including J Crew and department store Neiman Marcus, have been pushed into bankruptcy. Moody's Investors Service has predicted that the unemployment rate could fall back to 7% by the end of the year, but that forecast depends on the virus. The longer the shutdown persists, the harder it will be for the economy to rebound. "If the US does not contain the pandemic and the economy remains shut beyond the second quarter, the unemployment rate would rise further ... and many of the job losses that we currently view as temporary would likely become permanent," the firm's analysts said.
  7. Pros 1-New AT4 has off-road chops 2-Canyon Denali refined 3-Fits well in garages 4-Diesel tows 7,700 pounds, gets 30 mpg highway Cons 1-No manual transmission 2-MultiPro tailgate unavailable 3-High bed 4-Strange trim naming (i.e. Elevation Standard and Elevation) What’s New this Year? 1-New trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4 2-AT4 replaces All Terrain X 3-Canyon Denali updated 4-Four new exterior colors People Also Ask Where is the 2021 GMC Canyon built? The GMC Canyon is manufactured in Wentzville, Missouri. How long is the GMC Canyon’s bed? The Canyon has two bed lengths: 6-feet-2 inches (Extended Cab and Crew Cab) and 5-feet-2 inches (Crew Cab only). What’s new with the 2021 GMC Canyon Denali? The Canyon Denali now looks more like its Sierra big brother with a sculpted and layered grille, chrome exterior accents, chrome assist steps, and 20-inch alloy wheels. What off-road hardware is found in the new Canyon AT4? The new Canyon AT4 has off-road suspension, 31-inch Goodyear DuraTrac tires, hill-descent control, a skidplate for the transfer case, and a 4-wheel-drive system with a locking rear differential. Driving the 2021 GMC Canyon The seating position of the 2021 GMC Canyon is excellent, with plenty of height providing a good outward view. The seats are wide and supportive, and the feel inside the cab is more modern SUV than pickup truck. The steering is direct, the brakes are firm, and the suspension delivers a smooth ride on paved surfaces and well-controlled body motions on bumpy dirt roads. The base 4-cylinder engine is adequate. Our preferred choice is the 3.6-liter V6, although the 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder is a wise choice if you plan to tow. The V6, which like all Canyon engines mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission, provides decent mileage, satisfying acceleration, and impressive passing power. You’ll be able to tow up to 7,000 pounds vs. the diesel’s 7,700 pounds. Off-roaders will appreciate the Canyon’s 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system, which has a low-range transfer case and a locking rear differential for extra traction in dirt and snow. Favorite Features THE NEW AT4 Last year’s GMC Canyon All Terrain X was appreciated, but the new AT4 is much better suited for off-roading. With its aggressive tires, a locking rear differential, an underbody skidplate, and specially tuned off-road suspension, the new Canyon AT4 relishes difficult conditions. DURAMAX TURBODIESEL ENGINE You won’t find a diesel in the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, or Honda Ridgeline, but there is one in the 2021 GMC Canyon. The 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel makes 181 horsepower and a substantial 369 lb-ft of torque, which is good for a tow rating of 7,700 pounds and EPA highway fuel economy of 30 mpg. 2021 GMC Canyon Interior With the Extended Cab or Crew Cab, the 2021 GMC Canyon interior blends contemporary style with truck practicality. There’s a large center console, and the Canyon’s seats are suitable for large folks, with many controls located on the center stack. The large knobs can be operated by gloved hands, and the Crew Cab model seats four adults in good comfort, or five in a pinch. Available upholstery materials include vinyl, cloth and leather, and the upgraded infotainment system with the 8-inch touchscreen is a smart choice. In addition to available onboard Wi-Fi, the Canyon offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. For 2021, the Canyon Denali is available in a Cocoa/Dark Atmosphere color theme with a particularly rich look. A heated steering wheel also is standard on the Denali, as is wood trim. 2021 GMC Canyon Exterior The GMC Canyon is considered a premium midsize truck, and it looks the part. The nose is large and squared-off, and there’s a strong family resemblance to the full-size GMC Sierra truck. LED running lights and projector-beam headlights are complemented by flared fenders that add a bit of muscle. One of our favorite exterior details has a practical purpose: Integrated into each end of the rear bumper are corner steps, which provide people with an easy way to step up and into the Canyon’s rather high cargo bed. For added distinction, the refined, new 2021 GMC Canyon Denali has 20-inch wheels, a polished exhaust tip, and a larger new grille that’s layered and sculpted. The new AT4’s rugged off-road appearance is enhanced by prominent red recovery hooks. 2021 GMC Canyon Standard Features Standard features on the 2021 GMC Canyon include a locking tailgate, a corner-step rear bumper, 18-inch wheels, a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, two USB ports, and a power driver’s seat. Elevation models (and above) come with an 8-inch infotainment screen, along with automatic climate control, a Wi-Fi hotspot, an overhead console, a soft-touch instrument panel, and aluminum interior trim. In addition to its off-road suspension and aggressive 31-inch Goodyears, the new Canyon AT4 is equipped with 17-inch wheels, a skidplate for the transfer case, and wireless smartphone charging. As the top Canyon, the Denali is loaded with standard equipment. Highlights include a leather interior, a 7-speaker Bose audio system, a color information display, cargo lamps, heated outside mirrors, chrome exterior molding, a spray-on bedliner, a trailering package, and unique 20-inch alloy wheels. 2021 GMC Canyon Options Option packages abound on the 2021 GMC Canyon. We suspect a $630 Convenience Package will be po[CENSORED]r on the base-level Canyon, which is now called the Elevation Standard. This package includes remote keyless entry, a remote-locking EZ-Lift tailgate, cruise control, and a rear-window defogger. Moving up, the Elevation and AT4 Canyons can be ordered with a $690 Driver Alert Package that includes Rear Park Assist, forward-collision Alert, and lane-departure warning. The Canyon Elevation also can be ordered with a new $1,400 High Elevation Package that includes black leather front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power lumbar adjuster for the driver. 2021 GMC Canyon Engines GMC Canyon engines are unchanged for 2021. The base powerplant is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is po[CENSORED]r with fleet buyers. Two- or 4-wheel-drive (2WD, 4WD) is available with any of the three engines offered. We prefer the 3.6-liter V6, which is teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 puts out 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, and it endows the Canyon with a tow rating of 7,000 pounds. If you order the 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which produces 369 lb-ft of torque, the Canyon is rated to tow 7,700 pounds. The diesel (which adds between $4,000 and $5,000, depending on model), is more expensive than the gasoline V6, but it gets 30 mpg on the highway. The turbodiesel has a 6-speed automatic transmission. 2.5-liter inline-4 200 horsepower @ 6,300 rpm 191 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/25 mpg (2WD), 19/24 mpg (4WD) 3.6-liter V6 308 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm 275 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25 mpg (2WD), 17/24 mpg (4WD) 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline-4 181 horsepower @ 3,400 rpm 369 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/30 mpg (2WD), 19/28 mpg (4WD) How Much Does the 2021 GMC Canyon Cost? The 2021 GMC Canyon with the lowest Manufacturer’s Suggest Retail Price (MSRP) is the 2WD Elevation Standard Extended Cab, powered by the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. It starts at $26,400, plus a destination charge of $1,195. A Crew Cab version of the Elevation Standard with a short box begins at $28,300. With 4WD, an Elevation Standard Extended Cab starts at $31,800. The Canyon Elevation model is one step up. With a short box, the GMC Canyon Elevation Crew Cab is $31,900 (2WD) or $37,000 (4WD). A 4WD Canyon Elevation Crew Cab with the long box starts at $37,600. The new 2021 GMC Canyon AT4, available only as a Crew Cab, starts at $38,200 with a short box and $38,800 with a long box. If you want leather in your AT4, those prices rise to $40,000 and $40,600 respectively. At the top of the 2021 GMC Canyon offerings is the luxurious Denali, available as a Crew Cab with a short box or a long box. A 2WD short-box Denali starts at $40,900, while the 4WD short-box and long-box models start at $44,400 and $44,700, respectively. A fully loaded GMC Canyon Denali, when equipped with the diesel, can top $50,000. Always consult the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the 2021 GMC Canyon. Resale values are on a par with those of the Chevy Colorado, but not up to the high levels of the Toyota Tacoma. Which 2020 GMC Canyon is Right for Me? 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation Standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder/6-speed automatic transmission 7-inch touchscreen Power driver’s seat (with manual recline) 18-inch alloy wheels Locking tailgate 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation 3.6-liter V6/8-speed automatic transmission 8-inch touchscreen Overhead console Onboard Wi-Fi Tilt/telescoping steering wheel 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 4WD w/off-road suspension Transfer-case skidplate 17-inch cast-alloy wheels Heated seats Power driver’s seat w/lumbar support 2021 GMC Canyon Denali Leather interior 20-inch alloy wheels 7-speaker Bose audio system High-definition rear camera Wireless smartphone charging Worried about safety ? Don't worry because 2021 GMC Canyon has Safety Technology Teen Driver This standard technology allows the Canyon owner to monitor and coach beginning drivers. It includes a Buckle-to-Drive feature that prevents the driver from shifting out of Park for up to 20 seconds if the driver’s seat belt is not buckled. Teen Driver also issues a report card that allows later analysis and instruction. Driver Alert Package This system, standard on the Denali, includes forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and Rear Park Assist. It’s also available on the Elevation and AT4. Six standard airbags All 2021 GMC Canyons have six standard airbags: two frontal bags, a pair of seat-mounted side-impact bags, and two head-protection-curtain airbags for the front and rear outboard seating positions.
  8. Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed to reopen all shops as part of a deal with the leaders of Germany's 16 states to ease restrictions on society. General contact rules will continue for another month. Schools will reopen gradually this term and Bundesliga football has been given the green light to restart. The states have agreed to take control of timing the reopening. They will operate an "emergency brake" if there is a new surge in infections. A limited resumption has already begun, but this easing of restrictions is far broader. Two households will be able to meet and eat together under the easing of restrictions, and elderly people in nursing homes and facilities for the disabled will be able to have visits from one specific person. 'Germany doing better than other countries' "I think we can safely state that the first phase of the pandemic is behind us," Chancellor Merkel said. "But we need to be very much aware we are still in the early phases and we'll be in it for the long haul." Bavarian leader Markus Söder said Germany was doing better than many other countries because it had adopted a good strategy nationally and regionally and everyone had remained patient. Social distancing of 1.5m (5ft) and hygiene were key to keeping the infection rate low, he said. Germany has seen fewer than 7,000 deaths in the coronavirus pandemic - a much lower figure than seen in other Western European countries including the UK, Italy, France and Spain. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a federal public health body, reported 165 deaths in the past 24 hours on Wednesday and some 947 new infections. The rate of infection has been consistently low for some time, and Mrs Merkel said she was very pleased that the number of new, daily infections was into three digits. What has been agreed? The po[CENSORED]r daily newspaper Bild announced on Wednesday that Germany was opening up again. And broadly that is what has been agreed. Shops of up to 800 square metres (8,600ft) in size have already been allowed to open. All restrictions on shops will now be lifted, although masks must be worn and social distancing maintained. Schools have already begun opening for older children; all pupils will be allowed to return to class gradually during the summer term. "Children quite rightly want to return to their normal lives," said Mrs Merkel. During Wednesday's talks, state leaders agreed to take responsibility for the consequences of lifting the lockdown, which came into force on 17 March. Germany, in common with other countries, is wary of a second surge in infections. If new infections rise to above 50 people in every 100,000 in a district over a seven-day period, then it will be up to the local authority in the affected area to reimpose restrictions. A number of the 16 states have been less affected by the crisis, so some are more eager to ease restrictions than others. Bavaria in the south plans to reopen restaurants on 18 May while Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the north plans to do that this Saturday. Reopening restaurants and hotels is seen as a particular risk because it will heighten the number of people travelling across Germany and raising infection rates. A return to football The German football league, the Bundesliga, has been given the green light to kick off for the first time since March. So-called ghost games without spectators could start again as early as 15 or 21 May as long as a two-week quarantine is put in place for the players, in the form of a type of training camp. A decision on the date will be made by the football authorities on Thursday. The Bundesliga will be the first major football league in Europe to resume after the pandemic. However, it is not without risk. Ten positive cases were revealed this week by the German football league out of 1,724 tests across the top two divisions. Not everyone has been happy with the speed of reopening. Baden-Württemberg state premier Winfried Kretschmann accused "a whole row of colleagues of rushing ahead with their own openings". Meanwhile, tourism commissioner Thomas Bareiss has held out the hope that Germans will be able to go on holiday this summer. If the outbreak remained under control, he suggested they could go away in Germany and in neighbouring countries that had seen a similar drop in infections.

Upgraded MBUX telematics & driver-assist systems People Also Ask -How many doors does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe have? Contrary to its name, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a 4-door SUV. Mercedes calls it a “coupe” because of its sporty profile and sloped rear end. While it shares many parts with the GLC SUV, the GLC Coupe doesn’t offer as much cargo space, making it a bit less practical. -Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe a reliable SUV? The GLC Coupe is a good SUV, with average marks for reliability and resale on par with the Audi Q3, slightly behind the BMW X4 and well behind the Lexus NX. -Why choose a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe over a 5-door hatchback like the Audi A5 Sportback? While both models offer similar styling and versatility, a car like the Audi A5 Sportback delivers a more enjoyable driving experience. However, because of its SUV roots, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe offers more ground clearance and superior off-road ability, allowing it to go places a low-riding car like the A5 Sportback or Kia Stinger can’t. -Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe safe? Absolutely. Mercedes-Benz built its reputation on safety innovation and the GLC Coupe maintains the tradition. The GLC upon which the coupe is based excels in all required crash tests and comes equipped with numerous standard safety features and driver aids such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. It even has systems to help deal with strong crosswinds and warn you when it’s safe to exit the vehicle. Driving the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Because the two share the same basic underpinnings, it should come as no surprise that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe rides and drives very much like its GLC SUV sibling. And that’s not a bad thing in any way. The days of SUVs riding and driving like tall trucks are long gone, and Mercedes-Benz has done an excellent job with the GLC’s suspension and steering, making it almost as enjoyable as driving a car. The coupe departs from the SUV in that 4Matic all-wheel drive is standard with no rear-drive model offered. The new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine gets a 14-horsepower bump, but torque remains unchanged. With 255 horses on hand, the GLC Coupe has no issues with rapid off-the-line acceleration or passing power, earning a 0-60-mph time of just 6.2 seconds. All that power is put to the ground via an excellent 9-speed transmission and driver-oriented all-wheel-drive system that not only improves cornering but also traction in wet or snow-covered road conditions. There are five drive modes including settings for Sport and Sport+ that improve throttle response and shift timing for an even sportier feel. The GLC Coupe can even venture off-road, although we doubt many will take the challenge. Favorite Features DYNAMIC SELECT The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe comes standard with five drive-mode settings that vary performance and fuel economy. Comfort mode provides a nice mix of acceleration and comfortable driving, while the Sport and Sport+ modes improve throttle response and shift points for a more dynamic experience. You can even choose your own parameters with the customized Individual setting. AIR BODY CONTROL The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe features an advanced air suspension that improves ride quality and cornering. The system varies in stiffness depending on the Dynamic Select setting and can even lower the vehicle for easier entry and egress. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Interior One look inside the GLC Coupe brings about a feeling of deja vu. That’s because the Coupe shares much of its dash, door panel and seat design with the larger GLC SUV. Long the class leader for interior standards of materials, design and comfort, the GLC Coupe’s interior exceeds its price point. Rich wood, soft leathers and metal surrounds reside in place of the hard plastics found in many competitors. New this is year is a 10.25-inch touchscreen mated with a new console touch-pad controller. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is optional. Two new steering-wheel options include more controls for the driver aids and new MBUX telematics that includes casual voice-recognition commands such as “Hey Mercedes, I need coffee.” The one area the GLC Coupe falls short is functional space, all due of course to that sloping rear roofline that takes a hatchet job to rear-seat headroom and overall cargo volume. Practicality aside, there’s much to like inside the GLC Coupe. We suggest the Designo package for an extra touch of individuality. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Exterior For 2020, the GLC 300 Coupe gains a revised front end with a new diamond-block grille flanked by slim LED headlights and large lower air intakes. LEDs also grace the taillight section. The GLC grille can be either silver or black when the Night Package is ordered. New wheels and colors round out the upgrades. Of course, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe isn’t really a 2-door coupe. It’s a 5-door hatchback, but its sleek appearance is designed to look coupe-like, and it certainly pulls off that illusion as well as an SUV can. But there’s the rub: It’s still based on a high-riding SUV, and there’s a bit of a mismatch from some angles. This happens with the BMW X4 as well, especially on models with larger wheels and tires. Still, we give credit to the design team for making an inherently difficult shape easy on the eyes. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Standard Features The GLC Coupe costs a little more than the SUV model, but comes with more stuff too. Notably, 4Matic all-wheel drive, LED headlights and a power sunroof are all standard. There are also a standard rearview camera, power liftgate, power-folding mirrors and, 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside you’ll find keyless ignition, a 10.25-inch color infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, power-operated and heated front seats, MB-Tex faux-leather upholstery and wood trim. On the safety side of things, there’s standard collision prevention and pre-safe, as well as blind-spot monitor, exit assist, rain-sensing wipers, and crosswind assist. Also standard are remote seatback releases in the cargo area, a 115-volt outlet, and a heated windshield-washer system. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Options Options for the GLC 300 Coupe are offered in packages and as stand-alone items. Opt for the Driver Assistance package and you’ll get adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, active lane-departure warning and assist, active rear cross-traffic alert, and active blind-spot monitoring. The Multimedia package adds navigation, MBUX-augmented video for navigation, live traffic information, and speed-limit assist. The Exterior Lighting package brings active LED headlights and auto high beams, while the Advanced Parking Assist package adds an around-view camera, and a self-parking mode to let the car do the heavy lifting. Stand-alone features include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, Burmester audio, 3-zone climate control, wireless charging pad, and a number of service packages that include Mercedes Me connected services. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Engine The sole engine for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is a 255-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, powering all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. Don’t be fooled: This is a stout engine, getting the GLC Coupe from a standstill to 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds. Its ample 273 lb-ft of torque is available from 1,800-4,000 rpm, meaning the engine is always eager to help get you moving, and boost lag isn’t much of a problem. Fuel economy comes in at 28 mpg on the highway, not bad at all. However, premium fuel is a requirement. 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 255 horsepower @ 5,800-6,100 rpm 273 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800-4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/28 mpg How Much Does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Cost? The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe starts at $50,000 even, not including the $995 destination charge. While that’s more than you’ll pay for a base GLC SUV, remember the Coupe also comes standard with all-wheel drive, a sunroof, and other amenities. Of course, that’s a base price, and once you start adding options you’ll start seeing that price rise dramatically. Once you start picking options, it’s not hard to push the price of a GLC 300 Coupe to well over $60,000. Nonetheless, none of this is out of line for the Mercedes-Benz brand, nor is the roughly $5,000 premium over its primary rival, the BMW X4. Before buying, be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. As for resale value, the GLC 300 holds more of its value against the BMW X4, Audi Q3 and Acura RDX, and even does better than the Lexus NX. * Also ( Suggestion ) * Which Model is Right for Me? 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe 4Matic all-wheel drive Power sunroof & power liftgate 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen Automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping & crosswind assist Apple CarPlay & Android Auto 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Safety Technology Active Brake Assist This standard system monitors vehicles and even some stationary objects ahead and warns the driver if a collision is likely. Should the driver fail to respond, the system will apply the brakes at speeds up to 65 mph and can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Crosswind Assist Standard on every GLC Coupe, crosswind assist taps into the steering, suspension and electronic-stability program sensors to detect when strong crosswinds are affecting the vehicle. If the system detects the wind is altering the vehicle’s intended path, it will activate specific brakes on one side of the vehicle to help compensate. Blind-Spot Assist with Exit-Warning Assist Also standard on every GLC Coupe, the blind-spot assist detects traffic traveling alongside the vehicle and alerts the driver via a lighted red icon in the corresponding mirror. If the driver activates the turn signal, an audible warning will sound. The system also alerts an exiting driver or passenger if there is a vehicle or bicycle approaching as they are about to open the door.
  12. A patient treated in a hospital near Paris on 27 December for suspected pneumonia actually had the coronavirus, his doctor has said. This means the virus may have arrived in Europe almost a month earlier than previously thought. Dr Yves Cohen said a swab taken at the time was recently tested, and came back positive for Covid-19. The patient, who has since recovered, said he had no idea where he caught the virus as he had not travelled abroad. Knowing who was the first case is key to understanding how the virus spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is possible more early cases will come to light, and spokesman Christian Lindmeier urged countries to check records for similar cases in order to gain a clearer picture of the outbreak. The French health ministry told the BBC that the government was obtaining confirmation on the case and that it would consider further investigations if they proved necessary. France is not the only country where subsequent testing points to earlier cases. Two weeks ago, a post-mortem examination carried out in California revealed that the first coronavirus-related death in the US was almost a month earlier than previously thought. What do we know about the new case ? Dr Cohen, head of emergency medicine at Avicenne and Jean-Verdier hospitals near Paris, said the patient was a 43-year-old man from Bobigny, north-east of Paris. He told the BBC's Newsday programme that the patient must have been infected between 14 and 22 December, as coronavirus symptoms take between five and 14 days to appear. The patient, Amirouche Hammar was admitted to hospital on 27 December exhibiting a dry cough, a fever and trouble breathing - symptoms which would later become known as main indications of coronavirus. This was four days before the WHO's China country office was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause being detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Mr Hammar told French broadcaster BFMTV that he had not left France before falling sick. Dr Cohen said while two of the patient's children had also fallen ill, his wife had not shown any symptoms. But Dr Cohen pointed out that the patient's wife worked at a supermarket near Charles de Gaulle airport and could have come into contact with people who had recently arrived from China. The patient's wife said that "often customers would come directly from the airport, still carrying their suitcases". "We're wondering whether she was asymptomatic," Dr Cohen said. Could coronavirus have been circulating in Europe in late 2019, many weeks before it was officially recognised and declared a threat there? That is the suggestion being made after a French doctor has revealed that he treated a patient in Paris with all of the symptoms of coronavirus just after Christmas. How does this change what we know about the pandemic? It might be that the test result is an error and so does not change a thing. But it if is correct, it could mean spread of the disease was going unchecked in Europe while all eyes were on the East in Wuhan. Certainly, any laboratories in Europe with samples from patients sick with similar symptoms around that time might want to run a test for coronavirus to see what it reveals so that we can learn more about this new disease. Why does it matter? Until now, what were thought to have been the France's first three cases of coronavirus were confirmed on 24 January. Of those, two had been to Wuhan - where the outbreak was first detected - and the third was a close family member. Mr Hammar's positive test result suggests the virus was present in France much earlier. The first human-to-human transmission within Europe had until now thought to have been a German man who was infected by a Chinese colleague who visited Germany between 19 and 22 January. Rowland Kao, a professor of veterinary epidemiology and data science at the University of Edinburgh, said that if confirmed, Mr Hammar's case highlighted the speed at which an infection starting in a seemingly remote part of the world could quickly seed infections elsewhere. "It means that the lead time we have for assessment and decision-making can be very short," Prof Kao said. How was the new case found? Dr Cohen told the BBC that he had the idea to look back at all patients who had been in intensive care units with suspected pneumonia between 2 December and 16 January. He found 14 patients who had tested negative for pneumonia. He defrosted their samples and tested them for traces of Covid-19. He said that out of the 14 samples, one tested positive for traces of Covid-19. A second test on that same sample also came back positive. He added that the patient's chest scan was also compatible with the symptoms of Covid-19. A full report was due later this week, and would be published by the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, Dr Cohen added.

  17. Scientists have discovered a microbe that completely protects mosquitoes from being infected with malaria. The team in Kenya and the UK say the finding has "enormous potential" to control the disease. Malaria is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, so protecting them could in turn protect people. The researchers are now investigating whether they can release infected mosquitoes into the wild, or use spores to suppress the disease. What is this microbe? The malaria-blocking bug, Microsporidia MB, was discovered by studying mosquitoes on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. It lives in the gut and genitals of the insects. The researchers could not find a single mosquito carrying the Microsporidia that was harbouring the malaria parasite. And lab experiments, published in Nature Communications, confirmed the microbe gave the mosquitoes protection. Microsporidias are fungi, or at least closely related to them, and most are parasites. However, this new species may be beneficial to the mosquito and was naturally found in around 5% of the insects studied. How big a discovery is it? "The data we have so far suggest it is 100% blockage, it's a very severe blockage of malaria," Dr Jeremy Herren, from the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kenya told the BBC. He added: "It will come as a quite a surprise. I think people will find that a real big breakthrough." More than 400,000 people are killed by malaria each year, most of them children under the age of five. While huge progress has been made through the use of bed nets and spraying homes with insecticide, this has stalled in recent years. It is widely agreed new tools are needed to tackle malaria. How does the microbe stop malaria? The fine details still need to be worked out. But Microsporidia MB could be priming the mosquito's immune system, so it is more able to fight off infections. Or the presence of the microbe in the insect could be having a profound effect on the mosquito's metabolism, making it inhospitable for the malaria parasite. Microsporidia MB infections appear to be life-long. If anything, the experiments show they become more intense, so the malaria-blocking effect would be long-lasting. When can this be used against malaria? At the very least, 40% of mosquitoes in a region need to be infected with Microsporidia in order to make a significant dent in malaria. The microbe can be passed between adult mosquitoes and is also passed from the female to her offspring. So, the researchers are investigating two main strategies for increasing the number of infected mosquitoes. "It's a new discovery. We are very excited by its potential for malaria control. It has enormous potential," Prof Steven Sinkins, from the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, told the BBC. This concept of disease control using microbes is not unprecedented. A type of bacteria called Wolbachia has been shown to make it harder for mosquitoes to spread dengue fever in real-world trials. Bacterial allies make dengue fever cases dive GM fungus rapidly kills 99% of malaria mosquitoes What happens next? The scientists need to understand how the microbe spreads, so they plan to perform more tests in Kenya. However, these approaches are relatively uncontroversial as the species is already found in wild mosquitoes and is not introducing something new. It also would not kill the mosquitoes, so would not have an impact on ecosystems that are dependent on them as food. This is part of other strategies like a killer fungus that can almost completely collapse mosquito po[CENSORED]tions in weeks.

  19. People living thousands of miles apart with nothing in common are today united in their struggle against coronavirus. People living thousands of miles apart with nothing in common are today united in their struggle against coronavirus. More than three million people around the world have tested positive for the virus since it first emerged in China late last year. Close to 230,000 have died. There are only a handful of countries that haven't been touched by the pandemic. On Thursday, we told you about the lives of seven people in the UK who died on 12 April, the day the country officially surpassed 10,000 hospital deaths. These are the stories of four other deaths on three continents that also happened that day. Maria Pollidori was admitted to hospital in central Italy in late February for a stomach cancer operation. Everything seemed to have gone smoothly, and her family looked forward to her return. But on 9 April they received a call from the hospital saying the 84 year old had tested positive for coronavirus. Italy is at the epicentre of the global pandemic, recording more coronavirus-related deaths than any other country in the world. The central region of Marche, where Maria and her family live, has recorded thousands of cases. But Maria's family had no idea that she had been showing any symptoms. Three days after they received the call from the hospital, she passed away. Her son Pierluigi said the hardest thing was not being able to be close to her "at the time she needed us most". Maria's death was not only felt by her family. As a nurse and midwife of 25 years she was well known in and around the small seaside town of Porto Potenza. But because of the pandemic, no-one was able to pay their respects to her at a funeral. It is a story that echoes throughout the country. Thousands of miles away in the US state of Texas, Phillip Tsai-Brooks and his husband Anthony were both in hospital with Covid-19 on 12 April. It was love at first sight when the pair were introduced through mutual friends. They married in 2014 on a cruise ship in San Francisco Bay, and brought Phillip's widowed mother on their honeymoon to Puerto Rico - as they often did on their much-loved international travels. In a statement to the BBC, Phillip's brothers said Phillip and Anthony were able to break barriers, and were accepted as a couple in the city of San Antonio, where they were known for the joy they brought to people's lives. Phillip, one of five brothers, had always dreamed of being a hair stylist and one day opening his own salon. His ambitions were realised when he opened the Extreme Opulence Hair Studio. More recently, he had been teaching others in the profession. Only child Anthony, known as Tony, spent several years in the US Air Force before working for his local council, helping with budget planning for the city of Live Oak. A colleague said he was "smarter about city budgets than most people", and described him as "one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet". The charismatic military veteran would regularly bring sweets into work for the local mayor, dropping them in a jar on her desk, he said. Relatives and friends of the men described them as the perfect couple. They dreamed of one day adopting their own children. But their lives and dreams were tragically interrupted by the outbreak of coronavirus. In a Facebook post in late March, 42-year-old Phillip said he was feeling unwell and had been told to quarantine as a precaution. Six days later, he said he was in hospital with confirmed coronavirus. "Be here for a couple of days… then quarantine," he wrote. Anthony, 52, was taken to a different hospital, suffering similar symptoms. In what Phillip's brothers described as the final chapter of their love story, Tony was moved from another healthcare system into the same hospital as Phillip. As their conditions deteriorated, they lay in rooms next to each other. Phillip passed away on 12 April after suffering a heart attack as a complication of Covid-19. Just two days later, Anthony died. "Such a tragic loss but their love will last forever," Phillip's brothers said. Elsewhere in North America, Victor Batista Falla had recently returned to Cuba, the country of his birth, for the first time in 60 years. The 87 year old was born into one of the wealthiest families in the country, with his father's side founding a bank and his mother descending from rich sugar planters. He fled the country in 1960, after Fidel Castro and his revolutionary forces ousted President Fulgencio Batista. Victor then became a prominent figure of Cuban exile literature, founding the journals Exilio and Escandalar in New York. After moving to Madrid, he opened the publishing house Colibrí, through which he published numerous essays about Cuba. France-based Cuban writer William Navarrete met Victor in the Spanish capital in 1996 at a cafe po[CENSORED]r with Cuban exiles. After their first meeting, the pair saw each other whenever William was in Madrid. William described Victor as a man who hated confrontation and gossip, and who was protective of his privacy. "He was a bon vivant, but very measured," William said of his friend. "He never ostentatiously displayed relationships and never boasted about the things he did." Victor's high-profile relationships extended far beyond Cuba. He was the uncle of the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and a statement from the duke and duchess said his death was a "great loss" for the family. William said Victor never spoke of his connection to the royals and did not like to talk about his family's vast wealth. "Once I asked him if he was nostalgic for the lavish life he had had in Cuba until the age of 27," William recalled. "He replied that he was nostalgic for the things he wanted to do and that he had not done." After 60 years away from the country, Victor quietly returned to Cuba in February. It's not clear what led him to return. William did not know anything of the trip until he read a newspaper article telling him that his friend had died there of Covid-19.

  22. US officials "haven't seen" North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently and are watching reports about his health "closely", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said. He also expressed concern that the hermit state could be hit either by the coronavirus outbreak or a famine. Mr Kim, 36, last appeared in state media on 12 April, triggering speculation that he was seriously ill. But officials in South Korea later said such reports were not true. There have also been suggestions that North Korea's "supreme leader" may be staying at the sea resort of Wonsan to protect himself from possible exposure to coronavirus. The secretive state shut its borders in late January due to the pandemic. What did Mike Pompeo say? Asked on Wednesday by Fox News to comment on the recent reports on Mr Kim's health, Mr Pompeo said: "We haven't seen him. We don't have any information to report today, we're watching it closely. "There is a real risk that there will be a famine, a food shortage, inside of North Korea too," he added. "We're watching each of those things closely, as they have a real impact on our mission set, which to ultimately denuclearise North Korea," the secretary of state said. In the 1990s, a devastating famine is believed to have killed hundreds of thousands of North Koreans. On Monday, President Donald Trump said he had a "very good idea" about Mr Kim's condition, but added that "I can't talk about it". "I just wish him well," he added. Mr Trump has met Mr Kim three times since 2018 - but the denuclearisation talks have stalled in recent months. When did speculation start? Kim Jong-un recently failed to appear for the celebration of his grandfather's birthday on 15 April. This is one of the biggest events of the year, marking the birth of the nation's founder. Kim Jong-un has never missed this event - and it seemed very unlikely that he would simply choose not to turn up. Inevitably, his absence prompted speculation and rumour, none of which is easy to substantiate. Kim Jong-un last appeared in state media on 12 April "inspecting a pursuit assault plane group" in a handout that is undated. As ever, the images portrayed him as relaxed and at ease. He chaired a key political meeting the day before, from state media despatches. But he has not been seen since. The claim about Mr Kim Jong-un's ill health first surfaced in a report for a website run by North Korean defectors earlier this month. An anonymous source told the Daily NK that they understood he had been struggling with cardiovascular problems since last August "but it worsened after repeated visits to Mount Paektu".
